Introduced last September, Archie Comics’ first openly gay character, Kevin Keller, has made the big time: He’s getting his own series!

Kevin’s story arc began in the Archie spin-off Veronica when the cute Ken doll-esque teen showed up in Riverdale and wealthy boy-crazy brunette Veronica promptly crushed madly on him. A press release issued at Kevin’s launch said:

The introduction of Kevin as an openly gay character is part of the commitment to keep Archie properties reflective of the current world of teens and teen media.

Kevin’s series, which will start in February 2012, titled Kevin Keller, will bring in the teen’s military dad who is proud of his son and supports his decision to join the Armed Forces. Kevin will also run for class president. And win! But Kevin will have to face a few challenges as writer-artist Dan Parent keeps Riverdale High real:

Even the most popular kids are not popular with everybody. There’s some adversity he’ll have to deal with.

Kevin’s appearance hasn’t prompted much outrage. Only seven subscriptions to Archie Comics have been canceled since Kevin joined the gang. Says Jon Goldwater, co-chief executive of Archie Comics:

We’re just so proud of the success of Kevin and the fact that he adds a new dynamic to Riverdale.

Yeah, and Kevin did the impossible. He beat Jughead in a burger eating contest!
