The Marian Heart of America: Our Lady of Guadalupe and our “Post-Christian” Society

Remarks by Archbishop Gomez at the 7th Annual Napa Institute Summer Conference

My dear friends,

I am just coming back from Mexico. I had the blessing a few weeks ago to lead our first pilgrimage from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

As some of you know, I have a strong devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. I learned it from my parents, beginning when I was a young boy growing up in Monterrey, Mexico.

Every summer my mom and dad would take my sisters and I on a 600-mile journey to visit our grandparents in Mexico City. And every time we went, our whole family would make a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

My experience was not unique. This is what Catholic families do in Mexico — everyone tries to make a pilgrimage at least once a year to the Basilica.

I think most of us know the Guadalupe story. It takes us back to the “spiritual dawn” of the Church’s mission in the Americas.

It was December 1531 and the Blessed Virgin appeared to a poor Indian convert named Juan Diego on a hilltop outside Mexico City.

The Virgin entrusted Juan Diego with a mission — to go and ask the bishop to build a shrine in her name.

To convince the bishop, Our Lady gave him a sign. She made roses bloom even though it was the dead of winter. Then she used those roses to “imprint” her own image on the cloak — called a “tilma” — that Juan Diego was wearing.

And as we know, that tilma is still hanging today — almost 500 years later — in the Basilica, which is built not far from the site where she first appeared.

I am remembering that history today because I believe that Guadalupe holds the “key” for understanding the times we are living in.

So, that is what I want to talk with you about today. Also, it really makes sense because the Napa Institute, as we know, is entrusted to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

I want to offer my reflections today on the important conversation that has been going on in the Church this year — the question of how we are going to live our Catholic faith and carry out the Church’s mission in a “post-Christian” society. A society that every day is becoming more and more hostile to our values and our beliefs.

It is a crucial conversation. Archbishop Chaput, is right — we are fast becoming “strangers in a strange land.” His recent book is the most important book that has been written in the Church in some time. And I agree with him — it is not a matter of indifference whether we choose one path or another going forward.

Vatican speaks out against fundamentalism, again

Pat Perriello | Jul. 24, 2017 NCR Today

The Vatican continues to make its case against Christian and Catholic fundamentalism. La Civiltà Cattolica, a Jesuit magazine with ties to the Vatican, published a lengthy article on the genesis and effects of fundamentalism in the United States. One of the article's co-authors, Jesuit Fr. Antonio Spadaro, is a close confidant of Pope Francis.

Spadaro provides some of the historical development of fundamentalism in this country going back to the early 1900s. More importantly, he describes some of the effects of what has become the religious right in our country, and how it has influenced Presidents Reagan, Bush and now Trump.

First of all, there is the focus on the last book of the Bible, Revelation. If one sees the end of the world as one of the most compelling tenets of our faith, it changes in a dramatic fashion how one views the world. War and major weather disturbances (climate change) are signs that the end is coming soon. Even the creation of conflict can be seen as a positive effort to help bring about the last days.

There is no reason to work for peace, justice or climate improvement since one is only interfering with God's plan to bring about the end of time.

Additionally, there is the notion of dominionism. The book of Genesis grants man dominion over creation. Public norms are to be subjected to religious morals. The article notes that there is little difference between some of Christian fundamentalism and Islamic fundamentalism. The goal for Christian fundamentalists is to create a theocracy where the state submits to the Bible.

Vehicle plows into crowd in Los Angeles, nine hurt

July 30, 2017 / 8:23 PM

(Reuters) - A vehicle plowed into a crowd in Los Angeles on Sunday and injured nine people, one critically, authorities said, but it was not clear if the incident was intentional.

Eight people were being transported to hospitals after the vehicle struck the crowd on West Pico Boulevard, the Los Angeles Fire Department said on Twitter. A ninth person, an off-duty Los Angeles firefighter, was hurt but did not need to be taken to a hospital, it said.

A 44-year-old man was in critical condition, the fire department said. Three people were seriously injured, and four were in fair condition, with the ages of the seven ranging from 18 to 51, it said.

Los Angeles' NBC television affiliate, KNBC, said the vehicle was a van and the driver had remained at the scene.

The fire department tweets did not say if the incident was intentional. Islamist militants mounted vehicle attacks in the past year on pedestrians in Britain, France, Germany, Israel and Sweden, and a man drove a van last month into a crowd of worshippers leaving a London mosque.

The Mental Health Crisis is upon the Internet Generation

Three ways that modern internet technologies are tearing our young people apart

Posted Jul 23, 2017

Source: PublicDomainPictures / Pixabay

My student Julie and I recently conducted a study on the mental health outcomes associated with being separated from family during the college years (such as by going to college out of state, which is, of course, very common). The findings were complex - and I won’t bore you with nuances here. But I will provide you with one headline that struck me: In our sample of over 200 college students, 59% reported having been diagnosed at some point with some psychological disorder. Note: This is not 59% reporting that they sometimes feel anxious or depressed. This question very explicitly asked if they had been diagnosed with a disorder.

Think about that.

After repeal fails, 'task remains' to reform health care, says bishop

By Catholic News Service

7.28.2017 4:30 PM ET

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- After the Senate Republicans failed to get enough votes to pass a "skinny" repeal to remove parts of the Affordable Care Act in the early hours of July 28, a U.S. bishop said the "task of reforming the health care system still remains."

The nation's system under the Affordable Care Act "is not financially sustainable" and "lacks full Hyde protections and conscience rights," said Bishop Frank J. Dewane of Venice, Florida, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.

It also "is inaccessible to many immigrants," he said in a statement.

"Inaction will result in harm for too many people," Bishop Dewane added.

The failed repeal bill was a pared-down version of earlier bills. It would have repealed both the individual mandate that says all Americans must buy health insurance or pay a penalty and the requirement all large employers offer health insurance to their workers. It would have expanded health savings accounts, delayed a tax on medical devices and increased funding for community health centers by taking defunding Planned Parenthood by $400 million.

The vote was 51 against, and 49 in favor. All the Democrats voted "no." Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, joined two other GOP senators in rejecting the measure, Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, had pushed the latest version forward in hopes it would be passed and lead to a conference with the House, which May 4 passed the American Health Care Act to replace the ACA, to hammer out a compromise measure.

The Senate vote is over, but the need to reform health care remains, said Bishop Dewane, who urged the two political parties to get past their divisions and work for "the common good."

"A moment has opened for Congress, and indeed all Americans, to set aside party and personal political interest and pursue the common good of our nation and its people, especially the most vulnerable," he said.

He laid out four action items he said are essential to any bill to be considered in the future:

-- "Protect the Medicaid program from changes that would harm millions of struggling Americans."

-- "Protect the safety net from any other changes that harm the poor, immigrants, or any others at the margins."

-- "Address the real probability of collapsing insurance markets and the corresponding loss of genuine affordability for those with limited means."

-- "Provide full Hyde Amendment provisions and much-needed conscience protections."

"The greatness of our country is not measured by the well-being of the powerful but how we have cared for the 'least of these,'" Bishop Dewane said. "Congress can and should pass health care legislation that lives up to that greatness."

In response to the Senate's July 28 vote, Sister Carol Keehan, a Daughter of Charity and president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association, said her organization is "pleased and relieved that we will now have an opportunity to work together in a bipartisan way to improve the ACA."

In a July 28 statement, she said the CHA "looks forward to working with all the members of Congress and the administration in the process moving forward and will continue our efforts to protect and improve the Medicaid program."

Jim Sedlak, executive director of the American Life League, was disappointed in the final vote. He said in a July 28 statement that he hopes the House and the Senate would "put politics aside and pass a simple bill to take all taxpayer money away from Planned Parenthood. "

Sister Simone Campbell, a Sister of Social Service and executive director of Network, a Catholic social justice lobbying organization, personally delivered a letter to U.S. senators July 24 signed by 7,150 U.S. women religious urging the senators to reject the Better Care Reconciliation Act and any proposals that would repeal the Affordable Care Act or cut Medicaid.

After the Senate failed to repeal its health care reform legislation July 28, Sister Campbell said she was relieved for the sake of all the people she knew "who were terrified that their health care would be taken away."

"The road ahead is not likely to be straight or easy, but we must work together to improve health care for our people," she said.

On July 26, when senators rejected a repeal-only proposal of the Affordable Care Act, Students for Life said the senators who voted against it blocked defunding of Planned Parenthood and removing taxpayer funding for abortion. "There is still a long way to go in this process and pro-lifers everywhere are going to work even harder to make sure our voices are heard," the group said.

WASHINGTON • Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, President Donald Trump’s nominee for international religious freedom ambassador, describes religious freedom as “the choice of what you do with your own soul.”

If confirmed, the 60-year-old, two-term Republican governor, former U.S. senator and onetime presidential candidate would be the first politician confirmed as the ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom. Previous ambassadors were religious or nonprofit leaders, and Brownback would follow a rabbi and a Protestant minister.

“Religious Freedom is the first freedom,” he said in a tweet responding to Trump’s announcement. “I am honored to serve such an important cause.”

Vatican treasurer makes brief Australian court appearance over historical sex charges

Vatican Treasurer Cardinal George Pell is surrounded by Australian police and members of the media as he leaves the Melbourne Magistrates Court in Australia, July 26, 2017.Mark Dadswell

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Vatican treasurer Cardinal George Pell made a brief court appearance in his native Australia on Wednesday to face what police described as "historical sexual offences", making him the most senior Roman Catholic official to face such accusations.

Pell, 76, a top adviser to Pope Francis, did not speak as he was escorted to and from Melbourne Magistrates' Court by police through a large crowd of media, protesters and supporters. He was not required to enter a plea.

Australian police said last month Pell had been summoned to appear on charges of "historical sexual offences" from multiple complainants.

"For the avoidance of doubt ... Cardinal Pell will plead not guilty to all charges, and will maintain the presumed innocence that he has," Pell's lawyer, Robert Richter, told the court.

Magistrate Duncan Reynolds said he was denying media requests to see the charge sheets against Pell, who also did not speak during the five-minute hearing.

Reynolds set a committal hearing date of Oct. 6 and told Pell's lawyers they would receive a summary of the charges by Sept. 8.

A magistrate decides at a committal hearing whether prosecutors have enough evidence for a case to be committed to trial. Pell is not required to enter a formal plea until a magistrate determines whether there is cause for a full trial.

Pell has previously said he was looking forward to his day in court to fight charges he said are false.

Protesters and supporters carrying religious icons shouted as Pell entered and then left the courthouse in central Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city.

Pell is on a leave of absence from his Vatican role as Francis' economy minister, which he started in 2014. The pontiff has said he will not comment on the case until it is over.

Oakwood University Aeolians Win World Choir Title

15 July 2017 | North American Division and Oakwood University

Powered by Translate

Cheers and prayers of thanksgiving rang out in the United Kingdom and across North America as word quickly spread that the Oakwood University Aeolians Choir won the World Choir Title (Choir of the World) in the choral category during the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfo in Wales on July 8, 2017. The University also received a second award as Jason Ferdinand, the Aeolians' director, was named Outstanding Director of the World Choral Festival.

The competition, which started on July 3 and ended July 9, originally began in 1947 as a festival to celebrate the "Peace and Harmony" that showcases some of the world's greatest musical talents. According to the event's website, each year the International Musical Eisteddfod welcomes more than 4,000 performers, and as many as 50,000 visitors join the festival in the small Welsh town "to sing and dance in a unique combination of competition, performance, and international peace and friendship." The event culminated with the choral competition.

“On behalf of the entire Oakwood University community, we celebrate the success of the Oakwood University Aeolians on another history-making accomplishment," said Leslie N. Pollard, president of Oakwood University. "To be named Choir of the World at the international Welsh Eistefodd in Wales is a singular honor that represents the excellence of our university and the best of our Rocket City. Congratulations to the director, Dr. Jason Ferdinand, and especially our Oakwood University students. You have distinguished yourselves and made us proud and thankful once again.”

In a previous report from the university, the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is described as "not merely an annual festival promoted by one nation for international audiences, but a festival of music-making in which representatives of the peoples of other nations can take an active part."

The winner of the Choir of the World competition receives the coveted Pavarotti Trophy and 3,000 euros (US$3439.42, current exchange rate).

In a press release, university representatives said, "We are proud of the Oakwood University's Aeolians for achieving success on the world stage and representing Oakwood University, Huntsville, and most importantly, God to the world."

While in the UK, the Aeolians also performed at other venues in London, Birmingham, and Manchester.

The Angel of Revelation 18

 July 29

And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. Revelation 18:1.

The prophecies in the eighteenth of Revelation will soon be fulfilled. During the proclamation of the third angel's message, “another angel” is to “come down from heaven, having great power,” and the earth is to be “lightened with his glory.” The Spirit of the Lord will so graciously bless consecrated human instrumentalities that men, women, and children will open their lips in praise and thanksgiving, filling the earth with the knowledge of God, and with His unsurpassed glory, as the waters cover the sea.

Those who have held the beginning of their confidence firm unto the end will be wide-awake during the time that the third angel's message is proclaimed with great power. During the loud cry, the church, aided by the providential interpositions of her exalted Lord, will diffuse the knowledge of salvation so abundantly that light will be communicated to every city and town. The earth will be filled with the knowledge of salvation. So abundantly will the renewing Spirit of God have crowned with success the intensely active agencies, that the light of present truth will be seen flashing everywhere.

There is to be, at this period, a series of events which will reveal that God is Master of the situation. The truth will be proclaimed in clear, unmistakable language. As a people, we must prepare the way of the Lord, under the overruling guidance of the Holy Spirit. The gospel is to be given in its purity. The stream of living water is to deepen and widen in its course. In all fields, nigh and afar off, men will be called from the plow and from the more common commercial business vocations that largely occupy the mind, and will be educated in connection with men of experience. As they learn to labor effectively, they will proclaim the truth with power. Through most wonderful workings of divine providence, mountains of difficulties will be removed, and cast into the sea. The message that means so much to the dwellers upon the earth will be heard and understood. Men will know what is truth. Onward, and still onward the work will advance, until the whole earth shall have been warned. And then shall the end come.

Scientists Find Evidence That Ancient Canaanites Survive Today: Was The Bible Wrong?

By Luan Chan | Jul 28, 2017 06:07 AM EDT

Ancient Canaanites were annihilated according to a passage in the Old Testament, but the Bible may be mistaken. Archaeologists have found evidence of Canaanite DNA in modern-day Lebanese. (Photo : Dr. Claude Doumet-Serhal | Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute)

A team of scientists from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and its collaborators successfully sequenced the genes of five Bronze Age Canaanite remains found in an archaeological site in the Near East and made a remarkable discovery.

After comparing the ancient DNA with the DNA of modern-day people, researchers learned that present-day Lebanese had actually descended from Canaanites, who were supposedly annihilated after being subjected to divine judgment.

Who Are The Canaanites?

Canaanites were a mysterious race of people that was effectively driven out of their land and annihilated by Israelites after the Exodus, according to the Old Testament; however, the DNA evidence uncovered by archaeologists offers proof that the ancient race did not actually meet its end.

Why Not a Day of Rest From Politics?

Mainline Protestant pastors are more left-leaning than their parishioners.

PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES
By Libby Sternberg

July 27, 2017 6:08 p.m. ET

For the past decade I have attended a Protestant church near my home. Every Sunday I am surrounded by loving friends and acquaintances. I rejoice in the good news of the Gospel. I ponder how to live a better life. I petition God for my family and friends, asking for good health, prosperity and wisdom. I pray that the light of love will shine into dark hearts.

Yet I do all this knowing that my church is effectively a political adversary. I am a Republican. The Episcopal Church, like many mainline Protestant denominations, supports a “social justice” agenda that reads as if it were pulled straight from the Democratic National Committee platform.

I know I’m not alone. Mainline Protestants are about evenly divided politically, according to a 2014 Pew Forum poll. Forty-four percent support or lean toward Republicans, and 40% support or lean toward Democrats. Yet you wouldn’t know this by reading these churches’ statements on public policy.

The Exploding DNC IT Scandal Is As Crazy As Fiction

A now fired staffer for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz[+]

In a plot Tom Clancy might have dreamed up, an IT staffer who’d worked for Democrats in Congress was arrested by federal officials and charged with bank fraud. Fox News has reported that officers and agents from the U.S. Capitol Police, the FBI and Customs and Border Protection, were involved in the arrest of Imran Awan at Dulles International Airport not far from Washington, D.C., as he tried to fly away to Pakistan.

Awan has pleaded not guilty to bank fraud, but his strange case has all the feeling of the opening scene of a movie that might soon include political corruption and so much more.

Democrats are being understandably quiet about the hill staffer who had been employed by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) as of Tuesday morning, but has now reportedly been fired. Politico has reported that Awan is “at the center of a criminal investigation potentially impacting dozens of lawmakers.” Awan was arrested after wiring $283,000 from the Congressional Federal Credit Union to Pakistan, says The Daily Caller.

The World Against God's People

July 28

The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Revelation 12:17.

Our people have been regarded as too insignificant to be worthy of notice, but a change will come. The Christian world is now making movements which will necessarily bring commandment-keeping people into prominence.

The whole world is to be stirred with enmity against Seventh-day Adventists, because they will not yield homage to the papacy, by honoring Sunday, the institution of this antichristian power. It is the purpose of Satan to cause them to be blotted from the earth, in order that his supremacy of the world may not be disputed.

Every position of truth taken by our people will bear the criticism of the greatest minds; the highest of the world's great men will be brought in contact with truth, and therefore every position we take should be critically examined and tested by the Scriptures. Now we seem to be unnoticed, but this will not always be. Movements are at work to bring us to the front, and if our theories of truth can be picked to pieces by historians or the world's greatest men, it will be done.

We must individually know for ourselves what is truth, and be prepared to give a reason of the hope that we have with meekness and fear, not in a proud, boasting, self-sufficiency, but with the spirit of Christ. We are nearing the time when we shall stand individually alone to answer for our belief.

We shall be attacked on every point; we shall be tried to the utmost. We do not want to hold our faith simply because it was handed down to us by our fathers. Such a faith will not stand the terrible test that is before us. We want to know why we are Seventh-day Adventists, what real reason we have for coming out from the world as a separate and distinct people....

The powers of darkness will open their batteries upon us; and all who are indifferent and careless, who have set their affections on their earthly treasure, and who have not cared to understand God's dealings with His people, will be ready victims. No power but a knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus, will ever make us steadfast; but with this, one may chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight.

In Java, 19 new priests ordained in just two weeks

07/27/2017 INDONESIA

Yesterday, two Batak priests were ordained in Padang. Two days ago 8 priests in the diocese of Semarang. Two weeks ago, six new Jesuit priests in Kotabaru. Many young people reflect on the basic meaning of their lives and decide to enter seminaries. A very different situation from the one in the West.

Jakarta (AsiaNews) - While European countries suffer from a lack of priests, and religious vocation seems increasingly unattractive, Indonesia, the most populous Muslim state in the world, is experiencing a golden season of Christian religious vocations. In particular, many young men are entering the seminaries. Although there are few young men asking to enter religious congregations, the number of vocations in diocesan seminaries is very high.

More than 230 seminarians attend the San Petrus Canisius Seminary in Mertoyudan, Magelang, central Java, the oldest seminary in Indonesia with its 104 years of existence. "In the Marianum Seminar at Probolinggo in East Java, which belongs to the Diocese of Malang, there are 46 seminaries," reporter Adam Suncoko tells AsiaNews.

This reality is demonstrated by the number of new priests ordained in Indonesia over the last two weeks. Last night in the diocese of Padang, in the western Sumatra province, bishop Martinus D. Situmorang ordained Wolfram Ignatius Nadeak and Prian Saut Doni Dongan Malau both local diocesan priests of Batak ethnicity.

Report: Wasserman Schultz IT Aide Arrested Trying to Flee US

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla. (AP Photo/Cliff Owen)

By Cathy Burke | Tuesday, 25 Jul 2017 06:57 PM

An information technology aide for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla. – at the center of a congressional computer equipment scandal – was arrested while trying to flee the country and charged with bank fraud, Fox News reported.

Imran Awan was arrested at Dulles International Airport in suburban Virginia, and pleaded not guilty Tuesday to one count of bank fraud during his arraignment in federal court in Washington, D.C., Fox News reported.

Law enforcements authorities have been looking into how Awan might have double-billed the House for equipment like computers, iPads, monitors, keyboards and routers, Fox News reported.

Several relatives of Awan worked for House Democrats and were fired months ago, but Awan was kept on staff by Wasserman Schultz, the former Democratic National Committee chair, as a part-timer.

Wasserman Schultz's spokesman, David Damron, told Fox News in a statement Tuesday that Awan has now been fired.

"Mr. Awan previously served as a part-time employee, but his services have been terminated," the statement asserted.

Fox News also reported the counsel for Wasserman Schultz recently began negotiating with Capitol Police for access to her laptop in the case.

DNC’s Operative Alexandra Chalupa Worked With Bomber Kimberlin To Prevent Trump From Being Sworn In

Posted by Shane | Jul 25, 2017

The DNC operative at the center of Ukraine election interference was working with Democrats and a convicted bomber after the election.

Alexandra Chalupa, the former Clinton White House staffer and DNC operative at the center of the Ukrainian election collusion scandal, was actively working with Democratic lawmakers just after the election on the Trump/Russia narrative, enlisting the aid of convicted serial bomber Brett Kimberlin as she brought a foreign national into the country to meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Aspects of this story have been previously reported by Buzzfeed News in a story discussing fake documents that Kimberlin helped to pay for and acquire in order to smear Pres. Trump.

We are reporting exclusively for the first time, however, that the connection to the operative who flew to Rome to acquire those fake documents existed longer than has previously been reported.

Confusion in the timeline of the Buzzfeed story makes it seem as though Brett Kimberlin began working with that operative, Jonathan Schwartz, after being informed of the documents which would later be revealed as fake. A story released soon after by Chuck Ross of The Daily Caller tied Alexandra Chalupa into the story, highlighting her role in bringing Schwartz into the country, this time regarding accusations of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

However, sources with knowledge of the matter have confirmed that Schwartz was originally contacted by Alexandra Chalupa through a contact who was working at the DNC, and that convicted bomber Brett Kimberlin was actively involved when Schwartz was brought to the United States months earlier, shortly after the November election.

The new revelations raise further questions about Chalupa’s involvement with the DNC, after she claimed to CNN that she had no involvement.

Two stories by CNN reporter Dan Merica printed denials from the DNC and from Chalupa herself about any involvement. Both of those stories however failed to include a key piece of evidence: an email from Chalupa to former DNC communications director Luis Miranda that made it clear that Alexandra Chalupa was directly coordinating with people at the DNC, to whom she promised that “lots more” would be coming.

That email was from May, but significantly the WikiLeaks dumps ended in May. Any later emails on the subject from Chalupa would not have been part of subsequent releases by WikiLeaks.

Sources with knowledge of the matter speculated that the Democratic National Committee used Chalupa and Kimberlin as intermediaries to add several layers of distance as they brought Schwartz to America to speak to congressional Democrats about Russian election meddling. They believe that Alexandra, who also worked with her sister, New York-based writer Andrea Chalupa, in November, provided one layer of separation and that Kimberlin, who provided financing for the trip – with that money’s source unknown – provided a second layer for plausible deniability.

Kimberlin became known as the Speedway Bomber in the early 1980s after setting off a series of bombs near Indianapolis, IN. Police believe that the reason for those bombings was to cover up the murder of an ex-girlfriend. After serving 17 years in prison he became active politically, helping found two organizations that have raised nearly $2 million in the past few years.

Kimberlin has numerous connections to the Ukraine, including many business dealings in Ukraine shortly after he was released from prison. Additionally Kimberlin’s wife – who has alleged that Kimberlin seduced her when she was fourteen years old – is Ukrainian herself.

First on CNN: Former DNC contractor denies working with Ukrainian officials on anti-Trump research

By Dan Merica, CNN

Updated 5:17 PM ET, Fri July 14, 2017

Story highlights
"I was not an opposition researcher for the DNC," Chalupa told CNN
Chalupa is a Ukrainian-American activist and Democratic consultant

Washington (CNN)The former Democratic National Committee contractor at the center of allegations that Democrats worked with Ukrainian officials to dig up dirt on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump told CNN Friday that DNC officials never asked her to "go to the Ukrainian Embassy to collect information."

Alexandra Chalupa, a Ukrainian-American activist and Democratic consultant for over a decade, is the latest in a line of Democrats, including multiple DNC officials and former Clinton campaign officials, to deny the claim. It's a talking point the White House and other pro-Trump Republicans are using to deflect from Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a lawyer described to him in emails as a "Russian government lawyer."

DNC denies working with Ukrainian government, but contractor floated anti-Trump material

"During the 2016 US election, I was a part time consultant for the DNC running an ethnic engagement program," Chalupa said in a lengthy statement to CNN. "I was not an opposition researcher for the DNC, and the DNC never asked me to go to the Ukrainian Embassy to collect information."

Chalupa said Friday that because of her Ukrainian-American heritage she was aware of Paul Manafort's political consulting work for Victor Yanukovych, a former Ukrainian President with close ties to Moscow. Manafort, a longtime Republican operative, was hired by Trump in March 2016.

"When it was announced that the Trump campaign hired Manafort, many Ukrainian-Americans were alarmed and concerned it was an early signal that Putin was trying to influence the US election," Chalupa said. "At that time, I flagged for the DNC the significance of his hire based on information in the public domain."

Chalupa, who maintained other clients while working for the DNC, does say she had a "couple" meetings with "representatives of the Ukrainian Embassy," but that those meetings had to do with an "Immigrant Heritage Month women's networking event" she helped organize in June with Melanne Verveer, a Ukrainian-American and former US Ambassador for Global Women's Issues at the State Department under Hillary Clinton.

The White House has seized on Chalupa's work and a Politico story in January that said Ukrainian government officials worked with at least one staffer at the DNC during the 2016 campaign to help Hillary Clinton and undermine Trump. The story centers on Chalupa, who Politico reported has a network of people in Kiev and Washington -- including Ukrainian government officials -- who would pass her information that she would then float as potential research to DNC staffers.

Chalupa disagreed with the casting of the Politico story, posting on Facebook in January that it was "nonsense."

But the White House has jumped on the story, with multiple officials claiming it proves collusion.

"If you're looking for an example of a campaign coordinating with a foreign country or a foreign source, look no further than the DNC, who actually coordinated opposition research with the Ukrainian Embassy," White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Monday.

"Let's compare that to the DNC sending its people to the Ukrainian embassy to coordinate oppo attacks against our candidate," Sebastian Gorka, a White House deputy assistant, said Tuesday on CNN. "If you want to see collusion, it's in the DNC. I mean, it is up to their necks."

According to two sources with knowledge of Chalupa's work with the DNC, though, there was one occasion where Chalupa's Ukrainian activism crossed into her work at the DNC.

Before current Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's visit to the United States in April 2016, Luis Miranda, then the communications director at the DNC, suggested Chalupa ask the Ukrainian embassy whether Poroshenko would be willing to take a question from an American journalist on Manafort's hire and work in Ukraine for Yanukovych, the sources said.

The visit came days after Trump's campaign hired Manafort to lead his campaign's delegate effort. Manafort would later go on to lead the campaign before being ousted in August as questions about his work in Ukraine for pro-Russia interests swirled.

Miranda told Chalupa, the sources said, that he would get a friendly outlet to ask the Poroshenko a question during a press briefing he was scheduled to hold. Chalupa asked the embassy, but officials there said no, the sources added.

Miranda and officials from the Ukrainian embassy did not respond to requests for comment on this charge.

Another source familiar with Chalupa's work at the DNC said the contractor "informally" told committee staffers last year that Ukrainian officials had become concerned about Trump's campaign and his ties to Russia and suggested having the DNC work with the Ukrainian embassy to bring some damning information to light.

The source said she was told "unless there is something public, there is nothing we can do" and that the DNC "never got anything from her" or "met with the Ukrainians."

"We never got any actual information. It didn't go beyond running by someone in a hallway and hearing rumors," the source said. "It was hearsay in the hallway conversation, there was never any formal conversation or paper research."

In her statement to CNN, Chalupa denied that she ever suggested working with the Ukrainian embassy to dig up dirt.

Officials for the DNC and former officials from Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign have denied the charges leveled by the White House, as has the Ukrainian embassy.

"I ran the opposition press program for the Clinton campaign and I don't know what the hell they're talking about," said Zac Petkanas, a former Clinton staffer.

"These allegations are false. Period," said Adrienne Watson, spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee.

Lauren Dillon, research director at the DNC, also denied any contact with any foreign governments, including Ukraine.

"I've been director of research at the DNC for four years and had zero contact with foreign governments," she said.

And a representative from the Ukrainian Embassy denied cooperating with Chalupa to pass damaging information on Trump to the DNC.

"The Embassy of Ukraine has never coordinated with the DNC on opposition research. Embassy officials worked with Alexandra Chalupa and a Ukrainian-American advocacy group last year on cultural events, but they did not assist Alexandra in providing any information related to the US election," the Ukrainian embassy said in statement. "While some politicians who are not part of the Ukrainian government might have taken sides during last year's election, the government and the Embassy of Ukraine did not."

What happened to a day of rest?

Pulse: What happened to a day of rest?

Driving on Cuming Street this past Sunday, I observed hundreds of lightbulbs brightly burning on various levels of the new Creighton University College of Dentistry, under construction.

About noon, I passed by again, returning home from Holy Family Catholic Church. Men were working high on the north façade of the Creighton structure. As on the east exterior wall, where their work is done, their attention now is focused on the details of the large ‘IHS’ on the northern exterior.

It might appear somewhat of an irony that even on “the Lord’s Day,” work is nonstop, even on the symbol “IHS,” letters representing (from the Greek) the name of Jesus.

Jews have for centuries kept holy the Sabbath, and Christians have been more or less keen on keeping Sunday holy, in part by abstaining from unnecessary work.

Apparently, those operating Creighton University and thereby the soon-to-open dentistry school have decided that work cannot stop on this new building, even on “the Lord’s Day.”

It’s commonplace for workers to break “the Sunday rest.” It would appear even Jesuits — or their surrogates — have joined in these “necessary” pursuits.

Wisconsin Company to Microchip Employees

The tiny, implantable RFID chips will let employees make purchases in the company's break room mini market, open doors, login to their computers, use the copy machine, and more.

ByAngela Moscaritolo
July 24, 2017

Constantly misplacing your work badge? Workers at a Wisconsin company called Three Square Market (32M) may never have that problem again.

Because 32M, which sells vending kiosks for office break rooms, wants to implant microchips into its employees' bodies. The tiny, implantable RFID chips (which you can see above) use near-field communications—the same technology found in contactless credit cards and mobile payment systems—to let employees make purchases in the company's break room mini market, open doors, log in to their computers, use the copy machine, and more.

They'll be implanted underneath the skin in the space between the thumb and forefinger; the implantation procedure is over "within seconds," 32M said in a press release.

The program is optional, but 32M is expecting more than 50 staff members be "voluntarily chipped." The company is even planning a "chip party" at its River Falls, Wis. headquarters on August 1, during which employees will be able to get their implants.

In a statement, 32M CEO Todd Westby predicted that implantable chips will be used in the future to do everything from unlock your phone to share business cards and store your medical and health information.

Pope Calls for Dialogue and Moderation After Jerusalem Violence

Sunday, 23 Jul 2017 06:57 AM

Pope Francis said on Sunday he was alarmed by the recent violence in Jerusalem and called for dialogue and moderation to help restore peace.

"I am following with trepidation the grave tension and violence of recent days in Jerusalem. I feel the need to express a heartfelt call for moderation and dialogue," the pope told pilgrims gathered under blazing sunshine in St Peter's Square.

He called for prayers in the hope that all sides would come forward with proposals for "reconciliation and peace".

Three Israelis were stabbed to death in a Jewish settlement in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Friday, hours after three Palestinians were killed in violence prompted by Israel's installation of metal detectors at entry points to the Noble Sanctuary-Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem's walled Old City.

It’s time for N.D. to end the blue laws

Jul 21, 2017

North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger, left, talks with Brandon Medenwald in his state Capitol office in Bismarck after Medenwald delivered the proposed language for an initiated ballot measure to remove the state's Sunday blue laws. The measure would ask voters to repeal and amend the state constitution regarding limited Sunday retail sales of merchandise and hours of operation. Medenwald, committee chairman for the initiated measure, said once the language is approved by Jaeger's office, volunteers will seek about 20,000 signatures of the 13,000 needed by July 9, 2018, to be on the November 2018 ballot. MIKE MCCLEARY, TRIBUNE

An effort is underway to get a measure on the November 2018 ballot to repeal the state’s remaining blue laws. Secretary of State Al Jaeger’s office is reviewing the proposal and draft petition language. If approved, organizers can begin circulating petitions. About 13,450 signatures are needed to get the measure on ballot.

The 2017 Legislature rejected efforts to repeal the remaining Sunday restrictions. The Tribune Editorial Board believes voters will, and should, approve the measure.

The state has slowly whittled away at the blue laws. Until the 1980s the state required businesses to stay closed on Sundays, but in 1985 grocery stores were allowed to open. The Legislature in 1991 let most businesses open at noon on Sundays. In 2015, the Legislature allowed restaurants and bars to serve alcohol starting at 11 a.m. on Sundays.

Blue laws were intended to allow families time to rest, relax and attend church. The restrictions were greatly influenced by religion, despite a state Supreme Court ruling saying otherwise. By 1985 much had changed and there have been more societal changes in the 32 years since the first repeal.

The Sealing and the Latter Rain

July 23

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 2 Timothy 2:19.

Before the work is closed up and the sealing of God's people is finished, we shall receive the outpouring of the Spirit of God. Angels from heaven will be in our midst.

Our heavenly Father claims not at our hands that which we cannot perform. He desires His people to labor earnestly to carry out His purpose for them. They are to pray for power, expect power, and receive power, that they may grow up into the full stature of men and women in Christ Jesus.

Not all members of the church are cultivating personal piety; therefore they do not understand their personal responsibility. They do not realize that it is their privilege and duty to reach the high standard of Christian perfection.... Are we looking forward to the latter rain, confidently hoping for a better day, when the church shall be endued with power from on high and thus fitted for work? The latter rain will never refresh and invigorate the indolent, who do not use the powers God has given them.

We are in great need of the pure, life-giving atmosphere that nurtures and invigorates the spiritual life. We need greater earnestness. The solemn message given us to give to the world is to be proclaimed with greater fervency, even with an intensity that will impress unbelievers, leading them to see that the Most High is working with us, that He is the source of our efficiency and strength....

Are you using all your powers in an effort to bring the lost sheep back to the fold? There are thousands upon thousands in ignorance who might be warned. Pray as you have never prayed before for the power of Christ. Pray for the inspiration of His Spirit, that you may be filled with a desire to save those who are perishing. Let the prayer ascend to heaven, “God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; that thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations” (Psalm 67:1, 2).

Pope Francis, the Fox

June 2, 2017

By Richard Bennett

In Pope Francis’ encyclical, “Laudato Si’, mi’ Signore” (“Praise be to you, my Lord”): On The Common Care Of Our Home,[1] the Pope identifies himself as “the Holy Father,” and as a Christian. Nevertheless, Francis teaches the following in this encyclical,

“In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. ‘Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with colored flowers and herbs.’”

Is Francis endorsing the idea that the earth “governs us” rather than the Lord? Nowhere in the Bible is the earth called “Mother” or “sister.” This is demonic theology rooted in the “mystery religion” of Babylon. Anthropomorphizing the earth, especially as female, has always been a mark of pagan and Satanic worship. As Alexander Hislop points out,

“It has been known all along that Popery was baptized Paganism; but God is now making it manifest, that the Paganism which Rome has baptized is, in all its essential elements, the very Paganism which prevailed in the ancient literal Babylon...”[2]

Pope Francis is first and foremost a Jesuit. As a Jesuit, he is known to be cunning as a fox. In the third paragraph of the encyclical, he clearly specifies a crisis and targets his intended audience. “Now, faced as we are with global environmental deterioration, I wish to address every person living on this planet…about our common home.”[3] It remains to be seen, then, why Pope Francis has so early in his reign come forth with a statement of gross paganism as part of his supposedly Christian world view.

Jesuit Extreme Oath of Induction

The following is the Jesuit Extreme Oath of Induction given to high ranking Jesuits only. This oath is taken from the book Subterranean Rome by Carlos Didier, translated from the French, and published in New York in 1843.

"When a Jesuit of the minor rank is to be elevated to command, he is conducted into the Chapel of the Convent of the Order, where there are only three others present, the principal or Superior standing in front of the altar. On either side stands a monk, one of whom holds a banner of yellow and white, which are the Papal colors, and the other a black banner with a dagger and red cross above a skull and crossbones, with the word INRI, and below them the words IUSTUM, NECAR, REGES, IMPIOUS. The meaning of which is: It is just to exterminate or annihilate impious or heretical Kings, Governments, or Rulers. Upon the floor is a red cross at which the postulant or candidate kneels. The Superior hands him a small black crucifix, which he takes in his left hand and presses to his heart, and the Superior at the same time presents to him a dagger, which he grasps by the blade and holds the point against his heart, the Superior still holding it by the hilt, and thus addresses the postulant:"

Superior:

My son, heretofore you have been taught to act the dissembler: among Roman Catholics to be a Roman Catholic, and to be a spy even among your own brethren; to believe no man, to trust no man. Among the Reformers, to be a reformer; among the Huguenots, to be a Huguenot; among the Calvinists, to be a Calvinist; among other Protestants, generally to be a Protestant, and obtaining their confidence, to seek even to preach from their pulpits, and to denounce with all the vehemence in your nature our Holy Religion and the Pope; and even to descend so low as to become a Jew among Jews, that you might be enabled to gather together all information for the benefit of your Order as a faithful soldier of the Pope.

You have been taught to insidiously plant the seeds of jealousy and hatred between communities, provinces, states that were at peace, and incite them to deeds of blood, involving them in war with each other, and to create revolutions and civil wars in countries that were independent and prosperous, cultivating the arts and the sciences and enjoying the blessings of peace. To take sides with the combatants and to act secretly with your brother Jesuit, who might be engaged on the other side, but openly opposed to that with which you might be connected, only that the Church might be the gainer in the end, in the conditions fixed in the treaties for peace and that the end justifies the means.
