Predicting the Evolution of Mobility Options in the Pandemic Recovery

Auto Focus • March 31, 2020 • by Chris Brown

Shared mobility in various forms may struggle to regain a foothold post pandemic. But do we really want to return to this?

Photo via B137/Wikimedia.

There are various theories as to when the Coronavirus pandemic subsides to allow the world to safely return to business and daily life. While there are too many unknown factors right now, it’s understood that the recovery won’t happen evenly. As such, transportation modes won’t rebound all at once, and many won’t be the same post-pandemic.

Thoughts on the recovery timeline first: As the world sinks into a new normal, the initial “we’ll get over this in a couple of months” mentality has evolved.

The pandemic could abate in three to four months, or it could take 18 months, depending on many unknown factors: a universally distributed treatment (perhaps not a cure), a sharp drop in infections, relaxed social distancing that brings a new wave of cases, and a tested, viable vaccine. For that, experts say Spring 2021 at the earliest.

In terms of general business types, prevailing wisdom has government business returning first; in fact, government travel for essential services has actually increased in some sectors. Commercial business would come next, with regional and long-haul trucking returning to serve reopening manufacturing plants, stores, and restaurants. Last-mile deliveries, of course, have only increased during the pandemic.

In the corporate world, pent-up demand that had been on hold will be unleashed. Yet companies will be reassessing many factors: What is essential travel? At what stage will in-person sales calls be appropriate? When will corporations allow their employees to fly? When trade events are allowed to assemble, will potential attendees have the budget or the desire to travel?

The return of leisure travel may take longer, with different sectors reemerging intermittently as well: People will be starved to get out to visit friends and relatives, though they may prefer a car over travel by plane. With limited discretionary spending, vacations would be shorter and closer to home. International travel recovering slower as a result. Large gatherings may be banned for longer, eliminating travel to sporting events, concerts, and festivals. The cruise industry may suffer for years.

A choir decided to go ahead with rehearsal. Now dozens of members have COVID-19 and two are dead

The deadly outbreak among members of a choir has stunned health officials, who have concluded that the virus was almost certainly transmitted through the air from one or more people without symptoms

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — With the coronavirus quickly spreading in Washington state in early March, leaders of the Skagit Valley Chorale debated whether to go ahead with weekly rehearsal.

The virus was already killing people in the Seattle area, about an hour’s drive to the south.

But Skagit County hadn’t reported any cases, schools and businesses remained open, and prohibitions on large gatherings had yet to be announced.

On March 6, Adam Burdick, the choir’s conductor, informed the 121 members in an email that amid the “stress and strain of concerns about the virus,” practice would proceed as scheduled at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church.

“I’m planning on being there this Tuesday March 10, and hoping many of you will be, too,” he wrote.

“Get Ready, Get Ready, Get Ready,”

March 31

Prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.
Amos 4:12.

Suppose that today Christ should appear in the clouds of heaven, who ... would be ready to meet Him? Suppose we should be translated into the kingdom of heaven just as we are. Would we be prepared to unite with the saints of God, to live in harmony with the royal family, the children of the heavenly King? What preparation have you made for the judgment? Have you made your peace with God? Are you laboring together with God? Are you seeking to help those around you, those in your home, those in your neighborhood, those with whom you come in contact that are not keeping the commandments of God? ... Are we getting ready to meet the King? ...

If it were possible for us to be admitted into heaven as we are, how many of us would be able to look upon God? How many of us have on the wedding-garment? How many of us are without spot or wrinkle or any such thing? How many of us are worthy to receive the crown of life? ... Position does not make the man. It is Christ formed within that makes a man worthy of receiving the crown of life, that fadeth not away.62The General Conference Bulletin, April 6, 1903.

I was pointed to the remnant on the earth. The angel said to them, “Will ye shun the seven last plagues? ... If so, ye must die that ye may live. Get ready, get ready, get ready. Ye must have a greater preparation than ye now have.... Sacrifice all to God. Lay all upon His altar—self, property, and all, a living sacrifice. It will take all to enter glory.” 63Early Writings, 66, 67.

Christ is coming with power and great glory. He is coming with His own glory and with the glory of the Father.... While the wicked flee from His presence, Christ's followers will rejoice.... To His faithful followers Christ has been a daily companion and familiar friend. They have lived in close contact, in constant communion with God. Upon them the glory of the Lord has risen.... Now they rejoice in the undimmed rays of the brightness and glory of the King in His majesty. They are prepared for the communion of heaven; for they have heaven in their hearts.64Christ's Object Lessons, 420, 421.

If you are right with God today, you are ready if Christ should come today.65In Heavenly Places, 227.

Vermont's Catholic Church says now is the time for people of all faiths to come together.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX)

The Catholic Diocese released a video asking people to join in prayer with other faiths and called for unity in caring for those who are sick and dying from COVID-19.

What Unites Us from Diocese of Burlington on Vimeo.

"While we are separate in so many ways right now because of the illness, there's still so much that unites us, especially people of good faith. There are so many ways we can respond to being separated and respond to this virus. One way is to fall into fear and mistrust or the other way is to fall into hope to community as much as we can and to trust in each other and I think that's the message of this that there's more that unites us in our prayers right now in seeking an end to this pandemic than what separated us in the past," said Bishop Christopher Coyne of the Burlington Roman Catholic Diocese.

The bishop also discusses changes in the church and where you can see his Easter Sunday service since parishes are closed. You can see the full interview this Sunday at 7:30 a.m. on Channel 3's "You Can Quote Me."

The Last Act in the Drama

The substitution of the laws of men for the law of God, the exaltation, by merely human authority, of Sunday in place of the Bible Sabbath, is the last act in the drama. When this substitution becomes universal, God will reveal Himself. He will arise in His majesty to shake terribly the earth. He will come out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the world for their iniquity, and the earth shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.—Testimonies for the Church 7:141.

When our nation shall so abjure the principles of its government as to enact a Sunday law, Protestantism will in this act join hands with popery; it will be nothing else than giving life to the tyranny which has long been eagerly watching its opportunity to spring again into active despotism.—Testimonies for the Church 5:712.

By the decree of enforcing the institution of the Papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with Spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and Republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan, and that the end is near.—Testimonies for the Church 5:451.

The time is not far distant, when, like the early disciples, we shall be forced to seek a refuge in desolate and solitary places. As the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman armies was the signal for flight to the Judean Christians, so the assumption of power on the part of our nation, in the decree enforcing the papal sabbath, will be a warning to us. It will then be time to leave the large cities, preparatory to leaving the smaller ones for retired homes in secluded places among the mountains.—Testimonies for the Church 5:464, 465.

Coronavirus is Tanking the Economy

Economic Forecasts

Kiplinger’s latest forecast for the GDP growth rate

iStockphoto

By David Payne, Staff Economist
March 26, 2020

The interruption to U.S. and global economic activity is causing a recession both here and abroad. The domino effect from many events being canceled and workers trying to work from home is likely to cause the economy to contract in the second quarter, and possibly longer, depending on how the fight against the coronavirus goes.

Expect a decline in the second quarter of 21% at an annual rate, and a drop of 2.0% for the year, nearly equaling the 2.5% drop in 2009. There is likely to be a sharp rebound in the second half of the year, but the rebound will not be completed before the end of the year. Obviously, there is a great deal of uncertainty as to the size of the declines, and how fast the rebound will be. Politicians will ultimately determine when to lift lockdown orders.

Some of the falling dominoes are consumers who will be reluctant to make major purchases while their employment status is in jeopardy. The housing market, which should have been strong because of super low mortgage rates, may slow because people are unwilling to house hunt during the crisis. Businesses will be reluctant to hire or invest in new equipment if the economic future is uncertain.

U.S. exports to China and other countries with outbreaks are likely to suffer. Imports of goods from China to the U.S. have also been disrupted, though that is likely temporary. While lower imports boost the GDP calculation for the U.S., shortages of imported inputs can be a drag on U.S. manufacturing production.

U.S. GDP grew by 2.1% in the fourth quarter, the third consecutive quarter of roughly 2% growth. While the growth rate stayed the same, some components shifted. Consumer spending growth slowed substantially from 3.2% in the third quarter to just 1.7% in the fourth quarter. Business spending on equipment contracted for the second consecutive quarter. Construction of buildings dropped heavily for the third quarter in a row. And inventories grew by the lowest amount in six quarters.

What saved growth in the fourth quarter was a huge drop in imports, one of the reasons for the flatness of inventories. Housing was a bright spot, and government spending also contributed.

WHO chief's questionable past comes into focus following coronavirus response

By Barnini Chakraborty | Fox News

The head of the World Health Organization, in charge of making life or death decisions on a grand scale, has been accused of covering up cholera epidemics, supporting a terrorist organization and inflating his resume to claim he conquered malaria and HIV.

Tedros Adhanom Ghegreyesus' campaign to rewrite his questionable past has some wondering whether he is the right fit to lead the global agency through the coronavirus pandemic.

"Tedros is the second-to-last person who should be heading the world World Health Organization at this time," foreign affairs expert Gordon Chang told Fox News. "The last person is (Chinese President) Xi Jinping."

CHINA'S RELATIONSHIP WITH WHO CHIEF IN WAKE OF CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

The Ethiopian official, who was elected to lead the WHO in 2017, has been accused of cozying up to countries like China that have pledged millions of dollars to the agency.

Last week, Tedros applauded Xi for his efforts to contain and control the novel coronavirus that is widely thought to have originated in a Wuhan, China seafood market.

"For the first time, #China has reported no domestic #COVID19 cases yesterday. This is an amazing achievement, which gives us all reassurance that the #coronavirus can be beaten," Tedros tweeted.

Beijing has been accused of multiple cover-ups related to COVID-19 and health experts have said China's decision to suppress information about the virus has endangered the lives of millions around the world.

"Tedros permitted Xi Jinping to make public health decisions for the World Health Organization, and that slowed down the global response to the coronavirus outbreak at crucial moments," Chang said. "Moreover, Tedros, by making comments supporting the totalitarian form of rule over democracy, made himself a part of Xi's campaign to bring despotism to the planet. Democracies should defund WHO if Tedros stays."

Earlier this week, Tedros praised President Trump for his leadership skills in addressing the global pandemic.

Why do some Christians believe coronavirus is an apocalyptic prophecy?

According to some on social media, the coronavirus is part of the biblical prophecy of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Devout Christians have taken to social media in light of the coronavirus outbreak to show the eerie similarities between current events and the prophecy of the end of the world presented in the New Testament in the Book of Revelation.
The book describes a series of catastrophic events which will ravage the world, some perpetrated by the titular Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Though the roles of these riders have multiple interpretations, they are often recognized as: War, Plague, Famine and Death.

Similarities between these descriptions and current events appear too similar for some to disregard, and they have taken to social media to declare that we are living at the end of days.
"Those who know nothing of the New Testament or about Armageddon might think this is the end of days, but it really isn't," Jeff Keenley, a theology expert, told Mako.
"In the Book of Revelation it specifies that there will be famine, earthquake and plagues which will strike several point across the world: Clear signs for the gates of heaven opening. Has that happened? No. as such, you can breathe easy. This isn't Armageddon."
This joins a number of other theories regarding the virus which has killed many across the world. Theories that include the virus getting out of a lab where it was developed as a biological weapon among other claims it has been engineered by humans for some unknown purpose.

A Coronavirus Great Awakening?

Sometimes the most important ingredient for spiritual renewal is a cataclysmic event.

By
Robert Nicholson March 26, 2020 6:38 pm ET

Could a plague of biblical proportions be America’s best hope for religious revival? As the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II approaches, there is reason to think so.

Three-quarters of a century has dimmed the memory of that gruesome conflict and its terrible consequences: tens of millions killed, great cities bombed to rubble, Europe and Asia stricken by hunger and poverty. Those who survived the war had to grapple with the kinds of profound questions that only arise in the aftermath of calamity. Gazing at the ruins from his window at Cambridge University, British historian Herbert Butterfield chose to make sense of it by turning to the Hebrew Bible.

“The power of the Old Testament teaching on history—perhaps the point at which the ancient Jews were most original, breaking away from the religious thought of the other peoples around them—lay precisely in the region of truths which sprang from a reflection on catastrophe and cataclysm,” Butterfield wrote in “Christianity and History” (1949). “It is almost impossible properly to appreciate the higher developments in the historical reflection of the Old Testament except in another age which has experienced (or has found itself confronted with) colossal cataclysm.”

Americans, chastened by the horrors of war, turned to faith in search of truth and meaning. In the late 1940s, Gallup surveys showed more than three-quarters of Americans were members of a house of worship, compared with about half today. Congress added the words “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954. Some would later call this a Third Great Awakening.

Today the world faces another moment of cataclysm. Though less devastating than World War II, the pandemic has remade everyday life and wrecked the global economy in a way that feels apocalyptic.

The experience is new and disorienting. Life had been deceptively easy until now. Our ancestors’ lives, by contrast, were guaranteed to be short and painful. The lucky ones survived birth. The luckier ones made it past childhood. Only in the past 200 years has humanity truly taken off. We now float through an anomalous world of air conditioning, 911 call centers, acetaminophen and pocket-size computers containing nearly the sum of human knowledge. We reduced nature to “the shackled form of a conquered monster,” as Joseph Conrad once put it, and took control of our fate. God became irrelevant.

Who will save us now that the monster has broken free?

“Men may live to a great age in days of comparative quietness and peaceful progress, without ever having come to grips with the universe, without ever vividly realising the problems and the paradoxes with which human history so often confronts us,” Butterfield wrote. “We of the twentieth century have been particularly spoiled; for the men of the Old Testament, the ancient Greeks and all our ancestors down to the seventeenth century betray in their philosophy and their outlook a terrible awareness of the chanciness of human life, and the precarious nature of man’s existence in this risky universe.”

The past four years have been some of the most contentious and embarrassing in American history. Squabbling over trivialities has left the public frantic and divided, oblivious to the transcendent. But the pandemic has humbled the country and opened millions of eyes to this risky universe once more.

“Sheer grimness of suffering brings men sometimes into a profounder understanding of human destiny,” Butterfield wrote. Sometimes “it is only by a cataclysm,” he continued, “that man can make his escape from the net which he has taken so much trouble to weave around himself.”

For societies founded on the biblical tradition, cataclysms need not mark the end. They are a call for repentance and revival. As the coronavirus pandemic subjects U.S. hospitals to a fearsome test, Americans can find solace in the same place that Butterfield did. Great struggle can produce great clarity.

“The ancient Hebrews, by virtue of inner resources and unparalleled leadership, turned their tragedy, turned their very helplessness, into one of the half-dozen creative moments in world history,” Butterfield wrote. “It would seem that one of the clearest and most concrete of the facts of history is the fact that men of spiritual resources may not only redeem catastrophe, but turn it into a grand creative moment.”

Could a rogue virus lead to a grand creative moment in America’s history? Will Americans, shaken by the reality of a risky universe, rediscover the God who proclaimed himself sovereign over every catastrophe?

Mr. Nicholson is president of the Philos Project.

People who intentionally spread the coronavirus could face criminal charges under federal terrorism laws, the Justice Department’s No. 2 official said Tuesday.

In a memo to top Justice Department leaders, law enforcement agency chiefs and U.S. Attorneys across the country, Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen said prosecutors and investigators could come across cases of “purposeful exposure and infection of others with COVID-19.”

“Because Coronavirus appears to meet the statutory definition of a ‘biological agent’… such acts potentially could implicate the Nation’s terrorism-related statutes,” Rosen wrote. “Threats or attempts to use COVID-19 as a weapon against Americans will not be tolerated.”

Rosen did not say whether any such threats or intentional exposures had been reported or whether his warning was simply precautionary.

The Justice Department has also set up a task force to address hoarding and price gouging related to supplies urgently needed for the fight against the virus.

Attorney General Bill Barr said during a briefing at the White House on Monday that hoarding of supplies like masks would be prosecuted. However, memos issued by Barr and Rosen on Tuesday said the Department of Health and Human Services has yet to formally designate the health-related items the administration wants covered by the Defense Production Act.

The task force pursuing such issues will be headed by U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Craig Carpenito, and it will include someone from each U.S. Attorney’s Office and other Justice Department units, Barr said.

Service commission to propose women sign up for draft

By Madison Hirneisen - The Washington Times - Tuesday, March 24, 2020

A congressional commission is recommending that women should be required to sign up for the U.S. military draft for the first time ever.

The report by the National Commission on Military, National and Public Service, which was pushed strongly by the late Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, is due to make public its two years of research on Wednesday. Politico first reported on the recommendation for women.

“This is a necessary and fair step, making it possible to draw on the talent of a unified nation in a time of national emergency,” the 255-page report said, according to the Politico report.

The thought of including women in the military draft is a polarizing topic among lawmakers,. But women in the military have also been cleared for combat roles under a change approved by the Obama administration.

Just last year, a federal judge in Texas ruled that an all-male draft was unconstitutional in response to a lawsuit filed by the National Coalition for Men.

Trump: Reopen Country by Easter

Trump Wants U.S. ‘Opened Up’ by Easter Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

The president also criticized New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who said he expects the peak of his state’s outbreak to happen in 14-21 days, a timeline that includes Easter.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he is aiming to get the economy back on track by Easter Sunday, less than three weeks away on April 12.

"I would love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter," Trump said at a Fox News town hall.

"Our people want to go back to work," he said. "We want to start up as soon as we can."

Once several state stay-at-home orders and advisories start on Wednesday, more than 40% of the U.S. population will be affected. States across the country have overwhelmingly directed schools to close in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus.

But Trump qualified that some of the guidelines, like social distancing, increased hand washing and avoiding shaking hands, could still need to be practiced.

"I really believe we could do much of what we're doing … from a work environment," Trump said.

He reiterated a point he made at briefing Monday of the White House coronavirus task force, saying more people will "probably" die from reasons associated with the loss of jobs and businesses, like suicides, than the virus itself.

These states have implemented stay-at-home orders. Here's what that means for you

By Alicia Lee, CNN

California governor orders residents to stay home.

(CNN) As the US grapples with the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus that has the health care system at a tipping point, a growing number of states are ordering their residents to stay at home.
Despite the White House advising all Americans to practice social distancing, the number of coronavirus cases in the US continues to rise. So governors across the nation are taking stronger action by issuing stay-at-home orders in their states.
By Wednesday, when all 16 current state orders take effect, more than 40% of the US population will be officially urged to stay home.
These are the states that have implemented stay-at-home orders. CNN will update the list as more come in.

California
Last Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom was the first governor in the US to set mandatory stay-at-home restrictions to help combat the coronavirus.
Since the order went into effect, all nonessential services such as dine-in restaurants, bars, gyms and convention centers have been shut down.
Essential services, such as groceries, pharmacies, gas stations, food banks, convenience stores and delivery restaurants, have remained open. So have banks, local government offices that provide services and law enforcement agencies.
While the order is not being enforced by police, Newsom urged all Californians to stay at home. Residents who need to leave home to take part in essential activities are advised to practice social distancing.

Connecticut
Connecticut's "Stay safe, stay at home" policy goes into effect Monday at 8 p.m.
Under Gov. Ned Lamont's executive order, all nonessential businesses and not-for-profit entities should close.
The order excludes any essential business or entity providing essential services such as health care, food service, law enforcement and similar critical services, according to a news release.
Nonessential public gatherings of any size should be canceled and if residents must leave their home, the governor is advising they not travel in groups and keep at least 6 feet away from each other when possible.

Delaware
Gov. John Carney has issued a statewide stay-at-home order that goes into effect at 8 a.m. Tuesday and will remain in effect until May 15 or until the "public health threat is eliminated."
The order advises residents to stay at home whenever possible and close all nonessential businesses, according to a news release.
Delaware residents may leave their home for essential activities, such as getting groceries, seeing a doctor and engaging in "other activities essential to their health, and the health and well-being of their family members, including pets," Carney said.
"Delawareans may also engage in outdoor activity, but must adhere to social distancing guidelines," Carney said.

Hawaii
Gov. David Ige issued a "stay at home" order for Hawaii residents Monday.
The order takes effect on Wednesday and will last through at least April 30.
"These actions are extreme, but necessary, to flatten the curve and lay the groundwork for our recovery," Ige said.
Exceptions to the order are being made for essential services, medical care and grocery shopping.

ISRAEL ON MANDATORY 7 DAY POLICE-ENFORCED LOCKDOWN

March 19, 2020 3:45 pm

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivers an speech at his Jerusalem office on March 14, 2020, regarding the new measures that will be taken to fight the Corona virus in Israel. - Netanyahu said Israel would shut down eateries, shopping centres and gyms in a bid to halt the spread of coronavirus. Netanyahu also said he would ask the government's approval in the upcoming cabinet meeting set to be held via video conference to allow "technologies used in the war against terror" to be used to track the movements of Israelis with coronavirus. (Photo by GALI TIBBON / POOL / AFP)

Prime Minister Netanyahu said the Israeli government will later on Thursday approve orders to make the state of emergency declared by the Health Ministry legally binding.

The move effectively enforces a lockdown on Israel for the first time since the days of the country’s establishment.

“The government will approve tonight emergency regulations to limit movement. You are ordered to stay at home… This isn’t a request, this isn’t a recommendation, but an order that will be enforced.”

“if anyone thinks I’m exaggerating, look at the pictures of what is happening in Spain and Italy” where “teams are piling the dead into special vehicles. That must not happen here. We have to do everything to ensure it doesn’t happen.”

As part of the orders, Israelis will still be allowed to leave their homes to purchase food or medicine. The rules mandate that a person not leave their home at all except for one of the following reasons:

1) Going to or from work
2) Buying food, medicines and necessary products and receiving necessary services
3) Receiving medical services
4) Blood donations
5) Demonstrations
6) Unorganized sports of up to 5 people
7) Exiting a residence by an individual or people living in the same place for a short time and close to home
8) Leaving for a religious ceremony including a wedding or funeral or for prayers
9) Leaving to help a person who due to his age, medical issues or disability needs help
10) Leaving for a necessary reason not detailed in articles 1-9

Church forgives sins of those stricken by virus

Vatican City (AFP) - The Catholic Church on Friday granted forgiveness -- under certain conditions -- for the sins of the faithful struck by the novel coronavirus.

A decree published by the Vatican also covers healthcare workers and those who pray for their wellbeing. Relatives who care for their sick family members may also be forgiven.

The conditions include the sick saying a certain number of prayers or following important celebrations from a distance.

Those who pray for the caregivers' wellbeing must also read the Bible "for at least half an hour".

The decree was issued one day after Italy overtook China for the most number of deaths from the new illness.

The pandemic has killed more than 3,400 people in the Mediterranean country.

Vatican City itself has confirmed one infection.

Pope Francis was reported to have been tested for the virus as a precaution after coming down with a cold last month.

The Vatican has never confirmed or denied the report but has stressed repeatedly that the 83-year-old pontiff does not have COVID-19.

Bank of America says the recession is already here: 'Jobs will be lost, wealth will be destroyed'

PUBLISHED THU, MAR 19 2020 7:46 AM EDT

UPDATED THU, MAR 19 2020 4:10 PM EDT

"We are officially declaring that the economy has fallen into a recession ... joining the rest of the world, and it is a deep plunge," Bank of America said in a note to clients Thursday.
"Jobs will be lost, wealth will be destroyed and confidence depressed," the firm added.

Bank of America warned investors on Thursday that a coronavirus-induced recession is no longer avoidable — it's already here.

"We are officially declaring that the economy has fallen into a recession ... joining the rest of the world, and it is a deep plunge," Bank of America U.S. economist Michelle Meyer wrote in a note. "Jobs will be lost, wealth will be destroyed and confidence depressed."

The firm expects the economy to "collapse" in the second quarter, shrinking by 12%. GDP for the full year will contract by 0.8%, it said.

Bank of America looked at the labor market as a way to understand the "magnitude of the economic shock." The firm expects the unemployment rate to nearly double, with roughly 1 million jobs lost each month of the second quarter for a total of 3.5 million.

The coronavirus outbreak has already sent global markets into a tailspin as travel comes to a near standstill and businesses shut their doors. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average are trading in bear market territory, and now sit around 30% below their all-time high levels from just last month.

Meyer said it's only going to get worse. The firm sees a trough in April, followed by a "very slow return to growth thereafter with the economy feeling somewhat more normal by July."

"Although the decline is severe, we believe it will be fairly short lived," Meyer added.

As the economy continues to face uncharted territory, Meyer said "salvation" will come from aggressive action. "When it comes to the policy response, there should be no upper bound for the size of stimulus, in our view," she said.

Bank of America is far from the only firm with a dire assessment of the economy. On Tuesday, Morgan Stanley said a global recession in 2020 is now its base case, while "bond king" Jeffrey Gundlach of DoubleLine Capital has said there's a 90% chance the United States will enter a recession by year-end.

- CNBC's Michael Bloom contributed reporting.

Businesses banning banknotes, asking customers to use credit, debit cards

Published March 20, 2020

Last Update a day ago

By Barnini Chakraborty | Fox News

Show us the money -- unless its cash!

That's the sentiment a growing number of businesses around the world have adopted as fear grows over the spread of COVID-19.

Despite assurances from public health officials, some retailers are banning banknotes.

INTERPOL ARRESTS 121 CRIMINALS IN 90 COUNTRIES CASHING IN ON CORONAVIRUS

In Chicago, Open Books, a non-profit bookstore, sent an email to customers asking they not use cash. A chain of diners in Washington state has stopped accepting cash and door-to-door delivery services like Grubhub and Door Dash have put "no contact" policies in place and have either removed cash payment options or are actively discouraging them.

Julie Fischer, a professor at the Center for Global Health Science and Society at Georgetown University, says while there may be traces of the virus lingering on paper bills, it is unlikely virus particles will return to the air, or aerosolize, once on a surface.

Despite the reassurance, some people just aren't ready to risk it.

In South Korea, which has been more successful in stemming the outbreak, the country's central bank took all banknotes out of circulation for two weeks or, in some cases, burned paper money.

The National Bank of Poland said Thursday that “Polish banknotes are subjected to a quarantine” and are therefore safe to use in cash transactions.

TOP CORONAVIRUS MYTHS, HOAXES AND SCAMS

The bank did not respond to a request sent Friday for more details about how that works. But a business daily, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, described how commercial banks send the banknotes to the National Bank of Poland, which holds them two weeks and disinfects them at temperatures of at least 300-degree Fahrenheit. After such operations, "clean" banknotes go back into circulation.

In Hungary, the central bank said that it is withdrawing billions of forints from circulation daily for two weeks, then “resting” them for a period of time that is believed to coincide with the virus’ survival time.

Iran is suffering the worst outbreak of the virus in the Middle East. Using cash there is common, but in recent weeks many people have avoided it and banks have announced that they will not accept cash from customers.

Iranians often have multiple debit cards but cash is widely used in small-scale transactions, like buying bread in bakeries or leaving a tip. Many people have started even being careful in how they hand over debit cards, as contactless payment methods haven’t caught on there.

Coronavirus gathering bans raise religious freedom questions

By ELANA SCHOR

March 18, 2020

NEW YORK (AP) — On the first Sunday after the coronavirus began upending American life, some religious institutions – including two churches whose pastors are close to President Donald Trump – held in-person services amid public health worries over the pandemic. That picture already looks different this week.

Pastor Robert Jeffress, a stalwart evangelical ally of Trump, held services at his First Baptist megachurch this past Sunday in accordance with Dallas-area limits on gatherings of more than 500 people but said in an interview that this week, he would hold online-only worship. The Florida church where Paula White, Trump’s personal pastor and a White House adviser on faith issues, invited congregants to in-person services this past Sunday will also shift to online-only status this week, according to a spokeswoman.

Jeffress, who had called for “a fearless church,” said on Tuesday that Christians should take “common-sense approaches” to protect their health.

“Every pastor needs to use wisdom, and it is very obvious that the government’s motivation in this is to protect the well-being of individuals,” he said.

Churches and other religious institutions that have chafed at public health experts’ calls to fight the virus by avoiding gatherings are under heightened scrutiny as those experts’ pleas become edicts from government officials, including Trump. In a nation where faith can be as politically polarized as any other part of life – and where freedom to worship has become a rallying cry on the right – some conservative religious institutions are acknowledging that the government’s word comes first during a pandemic.

Liberty University, where president Jerry Falwell Jr. had initially planned to resume classes next week, said Monday that the evangelical Christian campus would largely shift to online learning after Virginia’s governor restricted gatherings of more than 100 people.

Pure in Heart and Life

March 21

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Matthew 5:8.

Into the city of God there will enter nothing that defiles. All who are to be dwellers there will here have become pure in heart. In one who is learning of Jesus, there will be manifest a growing distaste for careless manners, unseemly language, and coarse thought. When Christ abides in the heart, there will be purity and refinement of thought and manner.

But the words of Jesus ... have a deeper meaning—not merely pure in the sense in which the world understands purity, free from that which is sensual, pure from lust, but true in the hidden purposes and motives of the soul, free from pride and self-seeking, humble, unselfish, childlike.

Only like can appreciate like. Unless you accept in your own life the principle of self-sacrificing love, which is the principle of His character, you cannot know God....

When Christ shall come in His glory, the wicked cannot endure to behold Him. The light of His presence, which is life to those who love Him, is death to the ungodly.... When He shall appear, they will pray to be hidden from the face of Him who died to redeem them.

But to hearts that have become purified through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, all is changed. These can know God. Moses was hid in the cleft of the rock when the glory of the Lord was revealed to him; and it is when we are hid in Christ that we behold the love of God....

By faith we behold Him here and now. In our daily experience we discern His goodness and compassion in the manifestation of His providence. We recognize Him in the character of His Son.... The pure in heart see God in a new and endearing relation, as their Redeemer; and while they discern the purity and loveliness of His character, they long to reflect His image. They see Him as a Father longing to embrace a repenting son, and their hearts are filled with joy unspeakable and full of glory....

The pure in heart live as in the visible presence of God during the time He apportions them in this world. And they will also see Him face to face in the future, immortal state, as did Adam when he walked and talked with God in Eden.41Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, 24-27.

Will coronavirus lead to martial law?

Sarah Sicard

While the number of cases of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, continues to grow around the country and the globe, lawmakers are considering how best to cut down on the spread of the disease. But the measures being taken have some citizens and service members wondering if martial law may be declared.

As of Tuesday, more than 1,500 Guard personnel in 22 states were called up to aid efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 as the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a pandemic on March 11, with President Donald Trump following two days later to classify the virus as a national emergency.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a Sunday presser said that martial law was not necessary to combat coronavirus in his state.

“If you want to establish a framework of martial law, which is ultimate authority and enforcement, we have the capacity to do that, but we are not feeling at this moment that is a necessity,” Newsom said.

On Monday, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted, albeit with a spelling error, requesting everyone stop sharing misinformation about the use of martial law to maintain stability in this ongoing crisis. He wrote, “Please stop spreading stupid rumors about marshall law. COMPLETELY FALSE. We will continue to see closings & restrictions on hours of non-essential businesses in certain cities & states. But that is NOT marshall law.”

Newark mayor calls for mandatory curfew, closure of non-essential businesses for at least 2 weeks

Updated Mar 18, 2020; Posted Mar 18, 2020

By Rebecca Panico | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka called for a mandatory curfew and the closure of all non-essential businesses — with exceptions for restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies and gas stations — for at least two weeks to stifle the spread of coronavirus.

The directive comes on the heels of the city’s first fatality from coronavirus. The man was in his 40s, had underlying conditions and died after testing positive for COVID-19, Baraka said.

“Although he had underlying health issues, he was young - just in his early forties,” Baraka said in a virtual town hall Wednesday. “So we all have to take this very, very serious. Newark had its first fatality in a coronavirus case.”

The mayor said he imposed an 8 p.m. curfew within the borders of the city effective immediately. The restrictions would not apply to people coming or going to work or in emergency situations.

All non-essential businesses will close at 8 p.m. Wednesday and not reopen until at least April 1, Baraka said. Non-essential businesses include salons and retail stores, the mayor said.

The only businesses that can remain open are supermarkets, pharmacies and gas stations and can only be patronized after 8 p.m. for emergencies. Laundromats, hotels, banks, auto mechanics, wireless/cellphone retail stores can also remain open.

A Louisiana pastor defies a state order and holds a church service with hundreds of people

By Daniel Burke, CNN Religion Editor

Updated 8:28 PM ET, Wed March 18, 2020

(CNN) On Tuesday night, just before the police arrived, Pastor Tony Spell stood in the pulpit of his Louisiana church and delivered a message to hundreds of worshipers before him and fellow believers around the world.
"I just want to encourage the religious world tonight, Amen!," Spell said in a sing-song voice, building to the crest of his sermon.
"Keep going to church! Keep on worshiping God! ... The church is a hospital for the sick! It's a place of healing for the brokenhearted!"
In holding services for so many followers at his Life Tabernacle Church in Baton Rouge, Spell defied an emergency order by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards banning public or private gatherings with more than 50 people to stop the spread of Covid-19.

"I feel the Covid-19 scare is politically motivated," Spell told CNN. He estimated his church hosted about 300 people for Tuesday's service.
As the deadly pandemic spreads, houses of worship around the world -- from the Vatican to storefront mosques -- have closed their doors. But a few like Spell defiantly refuse, arguing that they have a right to worship as they please, and that, with fears of contagion upending our daily lives, we need divine aid and prayer now more than ever.

Coronavirus in N.Y.C.: Drastic ‘Shelter in Place’ May Be Next

Coronavirus in N.Y.C.: Drastic ‘Shelter in Place’ May Be Next

Life in New York City, a colossus of 8.6 million people and an economic engine for the country, is grinding to a shocking halt.

March 17, 2020, 7:44 p.m. ET

New York City, a colossus of 8.6 million people and an economic engine for the country, ground to a shocking halt on Tuesday because of the coronavirus outbreak and the Draconian restrictions on public life put in place to stem its spread. The city’s mayor signaled that the shutdown could go even further with the possibility of an order to “shelter in place.”

“It is a difficult, difficult decision,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said in an emotional address at City Hall. “If that moment came, there are tremendously substantial challenges that would have to be met. And I don’t take this lightly at all.”

He continued: “What is going to happen with folks who have no money? How are they going to get food? How are they going to get medicines? How are we going to ensure in a dynamic like that, that supplies are sufficient for our population?”

Mr. de Blasio said he believed a decision on such an order “should be made in the next 48 hours,” as evidence that the virus had already upended the lives of millions of New Yorkers became obvious.

Times Square was practically barren. The city’s most iconic department stores, including Macy’s in Herald Square, announced their closings. The Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building were shuttered. Restaurants and bars stood nearly empty, in their first full day operating solely as delivery and takeout venues.

New York’s desperation was made painfully clear on Tuesday when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the subway system, buses and two commuter railroads, sought a $4 billion federal bailout.

Ridership has plummeted by as much as 90 percent on the region’s trains and 60 percent on the subway — rendering the normally jampacked underground practically unrecognizable.

Officials have grasped for comparisons to other catastrophes. Mr. de Blasio said the economic fallout from the shutdown as a result of the virus could rival that of the Great Depression and the health impact that of the 1918 influenza epidemic that killed over 20,000 in the city.

But even as New Yorkers were struggling with the vast shutdown, the mayor and the governor, Andrew M. Cuomo, fell into a familiar pattern: battling with each other over control of the city.

This is not the end of the world, according to Christians who study the end of the world

Julie Zauzmer, Sarah Pulliam Bailey

Chuck Pierce’s son was concerned, like a lot of other people looking out on a world of ransacked grocery stores and canceled sports seasons and eerie lines of people standing six feet apart from one another. So he asked his dad: “Is this the end of the world?”

© Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post A pedestrian crosses 13th Street NW in Washington during what would normally be rush hour on Tuesday.

That’s a question you can ask when you have a dad who calls himself an apostolic prophet and leads a prophetic ministry. “No,” said Pierce, who is based in Corinth, Tex. “The Lord’s shown me through 2026, so I know this isn’t the end of time.”

The worldwide upheaval caused by the fast-spreading novel coronavirus pandemic has many people reaching for their Bibles, and some starting to wonder: Could this be a sign of the apocalypse?

Subscribe to the Post Most newsletter: Today’s most popular stories on The Washington Post

It sure might feel apocalyptic. But not if you ask Christian writers and pastors who have spent years focusing their message on the Book of Revelation — the New Testament’s final book. It lays out a lurid, poetic vision of the End Times, in which many evangelical leaders interpret it to mean that Jesus will return to Earth, believers will be raptured to heaven and those left behind will suffer seven dreadful years of calamities. Most of these Revelation-focused prophesiers don’t see coronavirus as heralding the Second Coming and the end of life on Earth as we know it.

“If a person were just completely ignorant about what the Bible says about the End Times, they may think this right now: This is it,” said Jeff Kinley, a writer of books on biblical prophecy who lives in Harrison, Ark.

Kinley said he understands why Americans might see this time of fast-encroaching disease, isolation from loved ones and crashing stock markets as apocalyptic. Americans are primed to believe the end of the world might arrive any day now. In 2010, 41 percent told Pew Research Center that they expected Jesus to return by 2050.

Kinley pointed to Revelation 6:8, which forecasts deaths all over the globe “by sword, famine and plague,” and Jesus’ words about the events before the end times in Luke 21:11: “There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.”

“I think he’s referring to a future time,” Kinley said. “I don’t think this is an actual fulfillment of that.”

Bill Gates always seems to know when it’s time to go

Bill Gates always seems to know when it’s time to go

He has distanced himself from Microsoft once again. It’s a smart decision that many company founders never could manage to take.

Kjetil Ree / Wikipedia

(Disclaimer: Microsoft is a client of the author and says Bill Gates saved his job as a first-year analyst. But he also says Gates never gave him a promised tour of his house.)

Bill Gates resigned from Microsoft’s board of directors last week, pretty much ending his official ties to the company he co-founded. He says he’s still available as a technology adviser to CEO Satya Nadella and other Microsoft leaders, but otherwise he’s devoting himself completely to his other pursuits, like philanthropy.

Gates and the company he started very nearly 45 years ago with Paul Allen transformed the computing landscape. Throughout the period of Microsoft’s early growth and maturation, Gates was at the helm as CEO, demonstrating business leadership and competitiveness that, even more than technology, were keys to the company’s success.

The competitiveness eventually led to Microsoft’s antitrust issues. The technology world was changing (I’ll go through some of that history in a bit), and the leader who had made Microsoft a tech giant was perhaps no longer tuned in to the changes as he once had been. That happens a lot with founders. What rarely happens is that the founder sees the writing on the wall and takes a step back. But Gates did. He resigned as CEO, staying on as chairman of the board.

Not everything Gates did was brilliant. By the time the internet had become a force in the tech world, Gates and Microsoft had made a series of missteps that almost made the company irrelevant. And in resigning as CEO, Gates left Steve Ballmer in charge. Ballmer clearly had earned the right to lead Microsoft as CEO, but he wasn’t right for the job, and Gates eventually had to remove him. The men had always been close, and it couldn’t have been easy to do it, but he did.

De Blasio urges 'nationalization' of key industries, calls coronavirus outbreak a 'war-like situation'

Published March 16, 2020
Last Update 10 hrs ago

By Ronn Blitzer | Fox News

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is arguing that the best way to tackle the coronavirus outbreak is for the federal government to take over critical private companies in the medical field and have them running 24 hours a day.

The mayor, who made multiple media appearances over the weekend, said that the current situation calls for drastic measures which include nationalizing certain industries.

CORONAVIRUS HAS NEW YORKERS WAKING UP IN A CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS TO BIG CHANGES

“This is a case for a nationalization, literally a nationalization, of crucial factories and industries that could produce the medical supplies to prepare this country for what we need,” de Blasio told MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Saturday, calling for “24/7 shifts” during what he called a “war-like situation.”

The following day, de Blasio reiterated this message, telling CNN that “the federal government needs to take over the supply chain right now.” He specified the need for companies that make ventilators, surgical masks, and hand sanitizers to be taken over and made to work around the clock.

New York state already has started producing hand sanitizer in response to shortages and price gouging.

The city itself has also taken drastic steps to deal with the crisis, forcing restaurants to limit themselves to takeout and delivery service, and closing many establishments to prevent the spread of the virus through crowds.

The mayor predicted that coronavirus will continue to be a problem “for at least six months.”

Sunday evening, it was announced that New York City schools will be shutting down until at least April 20, a measure de Blasio previously had resisted, despite facing pressure to do so.

President Donald Trump declared a national emergency Friday afternoon as the COVID-19 virus spreads across the United States.

Trump invoked the Stafford Act which allows the federal government to provide assistance to states.

Here’s a look at the legislation and what it does.

What is it?

The Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act of 1988 authorizes the delivery of federal technical, financial, logistical and other assistance to states and localities during declared major disasters or emergencies.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) coordinates the administration of disaster relief resources and assistance to states. Federal assistance is provided under the Stafford Act if an event is beyond the combined response capabilities of state and local governments.

How does it work?

There are two ways the Stafford Act will go into effect. From the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials:

State response and request for assistance: The governor of an affected state must first respond to the emergency event and execute the state’s emergency response plan before requesting a presidential declaration under the Stafford Act. The governor must certify in writing that the magnitude of the event exceeds the state’s capability to respond and that supplemental federal assistance is necessary. In the absence of a specific request, the president may provide accelerated federal assistance where it is necessary to save lives or prevent severe damage.
Presidential declaration: The Stafford Act authorizes the president to declare a “major disaster” or “emergency” in response to an incident or threatened incident that overwhelms the response capability of state or local governments. A presidential declaration under the Stafford Act enables access to disaster relief assistance and funds as appropriated by Congress. The Disaster Relief Fund has several billion dollars immediately available for the emergency needs of state and local governments, but its use is limited to those purposes specifically authorized in the Stafford Act — implementing allowed activities to respond to major disasters and emergencies as defined in the act. Congress may authorize additional funds as an event dictates. The presidential declaration specifies the types of assistance authorized.
