ROME (CNS) -- In a secret and swift election, the Knights of Malta elected an Englishman as their 79th grand master.
Matthew Festing, who had been the Knights' grand prior of England, was chosen March 11 to replace Andrew W.N. Bertie, who died in February.
Festing, 59, will head the world's oldest chivalric order, founded in the 11th century. He is only the second Englishman to hold the post of grand master; Bertie was the first.
Known officially as the Sovereign Military Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, the organization was established to care for pilgrims during the Crusades. It lives on today as a lay Catholic religious order and a worldwide humanitarian network.
The order is also a sovereign state, holding observer status at the United Nations and maintaining diplomatic relations with 100 countries.
Festing, an expert in art and history, joined the Knights in 1977 and in 1991 became a "professed" knight, taking religious vows. He is a descendent of Blessed Adrian Fortescue, a Knight of Malta who was martyred in the 16th century.
As head of the English priory, Festing organized humanitarian assistance missions to Lebanon and Kosovo and led a delegation on the order's annual pilgrimage with the sick to Lourdes.
In a statement issued after his election, the new grand master said he wanted to continue the work of his predecessor, who was credited with expanding the order's humanitarian services and its diplomatic connections.
Pope Benedict XVI was informed of Festing's election before it was announced to the world.
The election of a grand master is a major event in Rome. Fifty electors, representing the 12,500 male and female members of the order, filed into the Knights' villa on Rome's Aventine Hill, wearing their distinctive red robes decorated with the Maltese cross.
The election, which began with a Mass, had similarities to a papal conclave. The grand master had to be chosen from among the order's approximately 50 professed Knights.
The voting was done by a secret ballot, after nonvoters were asked to leave. No politicking was allowed, and the new grand master had to receive a "majority plus one" of the total votes -- at least 27 out of 50.
At a press conference a few days before the election, leading Knights said the order is often wrongly depicted as an elite, wealthy secret society.
"In many ways, we are misunderstood," said Winfried Henckel von Donnersmark, a member of the order's sovereign council. In part, that's because of the unusual nature of the organization, he said.
The Knights are a religious order, yet the vast majority of members are lay, he pointed out. It is a Catholic organization, but its humanitarian operations are open to people of all faiths. And while it does have some property and patrimony, it has to continually raise funds to support its annual $1 billion in charity works around the world, he said.
Membership in the order is by invitation. Knights and Dames are practicing Catholics and devote part of their time to doing works of mercy.
The professed members are all male, but women form an increasingly important part of the order, officials said.
According to Albrecht von Boeselager, one of the order's chief officials, the Knights have about 80,000 local volunteers working in 120 countries throughout the world. The organization is welcomed by so many governments -- even by the military regime in Myanmar, for example -- because it adheres to strict neutrality on political issues, he said.
"We don't consider ourselves a human rights organization. If making accusations on human rights issues would prevent us from assisting the needy, we would prefer to be silent," von Boeselager said.
In the Middle East and Asia, however, the Knights' neutrality has recently been called into question by extremist propaganda, he said.
"We have been accused of being part of a 'new crusade,' and even of having mercenaries fighting in Iraq. That is totally untrue, and it endangers our personnel in Muslim countries," he said.
Noreen Falcone, president of the Knights' U.S. federal association, said the order's organizational structure gives it the ability to move quickly into disaster areas. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, for example, the order went to work immediately.
"We're still there, building homes and helping to give people back their self-respect," she said.
In an unprecedented move an Englishman has been elected for the second time running as Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, the Roman Catholic order which traces its origins to the Crusades nearly a thousand years ago.
Fra Matthew Festing OBE, 58, an art expert and former army officer who leads the order in Britain as Grand Prior and is regarded as a forward looking reformer, was chosen today. The secret ballot took place today at a papal-style conclave in the Knights' secluded headquarters on the Aventine Hill in Rome.
The Knight's inner council, dressed in black robes embroidered with a white eight-pointed cross elected the new leader of the order of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, as the Knights are also known. The 79th Grand Master, with the title "His Most Eminent Highness", takes over an organisation which is noted for its humanitarian work in conflict zones.
The order is also fighting a campaign to dispel the "myth" that it is rich, powerful and secretive. The election took only a few hours, seen as a sign of unanimity over reported plans to make the order more "open and transparent" and better known globally for its charitable and medical relief operations in 120 countries.
Grand Masters, like Popes, are elected for life. The move was announced after it had been approved by Pope Benedict XVI. It comes a month after the death of Fra' Andrew Bertie, a former schoolmaster and descendant of the Stuart dynasty who was the first Englishman to lead the order and served as its Grand Master for nearly 20 years.
Under his leadership the order - which has the status of sovereign state, with its own passports and stamps - expanded its diplomatic relations from 49 to 100 countries. The order has 12,500 full members, of whom only 50 are "professed knights" who take monk-like vows of poverty, obedience and chastity.
The order said that the new Grand Master "affirms his resolve to continue the great work carried out by his predecessor". It added: "Fra' Matthew comes with a wide range of experience in Order affairs. He has been the Grand Prior of England since the Priory's re-establishment in 1993, restored after an abeyance of 450 years. In this capacity, he has led missions of humanitarian aid to Kosovo, Serbia and Croatia after the recent disturbances in those countries, and with a large delegation from Britain he attends the Order's annual pilgrimage to Lourdes with handicapped pilgrims."
He was educated at Ampleforth and St John's College Cambridge, where he read history. As a child he lived in Egypt and Singapore, where his father, Field Marshal Sir Francis Festing, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, was posted. He is also descended from Sir Adrian Fortescue, a Knight of Malta martyred in 1539.
Frà Matthew served in the Grenadier Guards and holds the rank of colonel in the Territorial Army. He was appointed OBE by the Queen and served as Deputy Lieutenant in Northumberland. He joined the order in 1977, taking solemn religious vows in 1991.
A spokeswoman for the order said he was noted for his "very British sense of humour" as well as his passion for the decorative arts and encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of the Order.
Fra Matthew has promoted the teaching of Christianity in schools, observing that "We live during a strange period in history when children are taught "Comparative Religion" and leave school believing it does not matter what religion you profess .....No wonder many young people are astonished that anyone could possibly have been prepared to suffer and die for the faith".
At one time the order, which is predominantly male, was drawn from European aristocratic families. This has led conspiracy theorists to paint it as a rich and powerful cabal given to arcane rituals.
However Albrecht von Boeselager, the Grand Hospitaller in charge of the order's humanitarian arm, said this was "completely untrue". Charges that the order was conducting a secret "New Crusade" in Muslim countries and had sent mercenaries to fight in Iraq or Afghanistan were also "absolutely without foundation".
He added: "This kind of talk endangers our volunteers in the Muslim world. In Bethlehem we have a maternity hospital which delivers 3000 babies year, 80% of them Musulim. We are Catholic but neutral".
Winfried Henckel von Donnersmarck, a member of the order's Sovereign Council, said the order had 80,000 volunteers and spent £500 million a year helping the world's poor. "The only mystery is one of history. Any organisation is going to have mysteries if it has a thousand years of history behind it " he said.
He said women played a growing role, with Noreen Falcone recently becoming the first woman head of the order's national association in the US.
On its website the order's British chapter notes that there were English knights from the time of the First Crusade, with two priories established in the twelfth century , one for England, Wales and Scotland, and another for Ireland. The Grand Priory of England "received a great accession of wealth and property when the Templars were suppressed in 1312."
The order was disolved by Henry VIII in 1540, when several prominent Knights of Malta were executed. The Grand Priory's ecclesiastical seat is the Church of St. John of Jerusalem in St. John's Wood in London. It is separate from the Most Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem in the British Realm, founded in 1888, but the two bodies signed a co-operation agreement in 1963.

William F. Buckley Jr. was a prominent right-wing American political commentator. His grandfather made millions in the oil business, and his father made many millions more with ownership of the Catawba Corporation, using the extended Buckley family's almost-complete control of six giant oil companies to ensure that all six companies relied on Catawba for lucrative geological, geophysical, accounting, and technical services.
Like his nine brothers and sisters, Buckley had Latin American nursemaids and French governesses, and he grew up trilingual. As a young boy, on his father's recommendation, Buckley read the works of Albert Jay Nock. He was drafted into the Army in 1944, and upon his discharge in 1946 worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, where three of his siblings have also been employed. Buckley's immediate supervisor at CIA was E. Howard Hunt, who sent him to Mexico City, where he was charged with undermining the Mexican government.
At Yale, Buckley was the star of the debating team, and earned his bachelor's degree in 1950. Upon graduation, Buckley promptly wrote God and Man at Yale, a book criticizing his alma mater for straying from its original, Christian mission. He was an editor at The American Mercury for several years, before his aggravation at the liberal policies of the Eisenhower administration led him to start his conservative magazine, National Review.
National Review quickly found its audience, making Buckley a political force. It was cited as influential by right-wing leaders such as Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. In 1960, Young Americans for Freedom (or YAF, as it was widely known through the 1960s) was founded in a meeting at Buckley's Connecticut estate. During the Watergate scandal, Buckley underwrote his former CIA boss Hunt's legal defense. Buckley's newspaper column, accurately titled "On the Right", was syndicated beginning in 1962, and in 1965 he ran for mayor of New York on the Conservative Party ticket, receiving about 13% of the vote.

Among his projects, Buckley found time to write a series of novels about fictional CIA spy Blackford Oakes. Oakes manifested Buckley's foreign policy against Cuba in See You Later, Alligator, against East Germany in Marco Polo, If You Can, and against the Soviets in High Jinx, among several other titles. In his last Oakes opus, 1995's A Very Private Plot, the spy was called to testify about secret operations conducted in the 1980s.

Cardinal Recalls Nobility of Order of Malta Grand Master
Says Bertie Was Known for Compassion Toward Suffering
ROME, FEB. 18, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Andrew Bertie was not just of noble birth, he was noble of soul, said the cardinal who presided at the funeral of the Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
This is how Cardinal Pio Laghi characterized Bertie during the solemn funeral Mass that was celebrated at the Basilica of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill in Rome on Saturday. Bertie Died Feb. 7 at age 78.
In his homily, the cardinal recalled Bertie's "natural gift of making himself be obeyed, a virtue in which he himself provided an example; compassion toward those who suffer, his straightforward and serene manner of speaking -- with an occasional sagacious comment but always marked by charity -- the noble expression of his face, which revealed a profound spirituality and a strong conviction."
Benedict XVI, in a telegram of condolence for his death, praised "the work of this man of culture and [...] his generous commitment in the fulfillment of his high office, especially in favor of those most in need, and for his love for the Church and for his luminous testimony of the principles of the Gospel."
Cardinal Laghi paid homage to Bertie's dedication in promoting the mission of the Order of Malta: taking care of everyone, without distinction of religion, race or origin.
Cardinals Paul Poupard, Jean-Louis Tauran, Renato Martino and John Patrick Foley concelebrated the funeral Mass with Cardinal Laghi.
After the Mass, Bertie's body was entombed in the Church of Santa Maria del Priorato. The state funeral will take place March 8 in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.
The Order of Malta is a lay Catholic charitable group. It operates numerous hospitals, medical centers, first aid groups and various humanitarian projects in 120 countries.
Currently 12,500 members and 80,000 permanent volunteers, assisted by 13,000 doctors and nurses, are engaged in the charitable works of the order.

LONDON, UK (LifeSiteNews) - After three years of investigations and disputes, Cormac Cardinal Murphy O'Connor has asked the entire board of directors of a London Catholic hospital to resign in order to facilitate the implementation of a Catholic ethics code that would preclude abortion referrals, IVF and contraception.
A spokesman for the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, who is patron of the hospital and the head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, is quoted by the Guardian saying, "In light of recent difficulties and challenges the cardinal asked the board to resign their office."
An investigation into the practices of the fashionable private hospital in St John's Wood was launched in 2006, after complaints came from the Vatican that the hospital was dispensing chemical contraceptives and referring for abortions. Later it was also revealed that the hospital had allowed phalloplasties, a woman-to-man "sex-change operation".
After nearly two years of disputes with the hospital's board, Cardinal Murphy O'Connor, the hospital's arbiter on ethics, imposed a new ethics code and appointed an auxiliary bishop of Westminster archdiocese to oversee implementation. At this, a number of board members resigned, accusing the cardinal of promoting Catholic "values", which they held to be in conflict with patient care.
The hospital is also under investigation by the government's Charity Commission for failing to disclose vital information surrounding an £11 million loan to open an NHS primary care centre on its premises. Money to refurbish the property, a former convent, was approved by the government's Charity Commission, but the agency was not informed that a clause in the lease allowed doctors to opt out of the hospital's own ethics code.
The cardinal's office said the removal of the previous board was "to enable a new chairman to begin his office with the freedom to go about ensuring the future wellbeing of this Catholic hospital".
Charles Baron Guthrie of Craigiebank has been appointed in that position. Lord Guthrie is a former Chief of the Defence Staff of the British Army, and is Vice President and Knight of Sovereign Military Order of Malta, an ancient Catholic military order that now focuses on medical charity work around the world. The Order has its London headquarters, including an ornate and historic chapel, at the hospital.
As a member of the House of Lords, Baron Guthrie has spoken against the Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill Bill in 2005, saying that it is the failure of the medical community to improve pain relief and appropriate care of the dying that has generated a demand for euthanasia.
But the Restituta Group, an organisation that has been working to restore the Catholic ethos to the hospital, told LifeSiteNews.com that the move by the Cardinal to remove the board is "baffling".
Nicolas J. Bellord, secretary to the group, said the problems in the board and the hospital's Catholicity were being resolved and that the situation was improving.
"I'm totally baffled," Mr. Bellord said, "The board seemed to be getting on top of the problem. They seemed to have achieved a great deal. They were getting back towards Catholicity, they started on that way and now they've being asked to resign."
Bellord pointed out that technically, the Cardinal has no legal power to remove the board.
The hospital said it would not be commenting further on the resignations. Deputy chief executive, Claire Hornick, said "Lord Guthrie, supported by Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, has stated that under his chairmanship there is no desire that the hospital be sold and that the committed plan remains to continue the objects of the charity, which, guided by its Catholic ethos, is to serve the local community."
Fra Andrew Bertie, died late last night in a Roman hospital. He was 78.
Bertie was elected to lead the order in a secret conclave in 1988. He is credited with modernizing the group's humanitarian programs, increasing membership and extending its reach in troubled and far-flung regions, the statement said.
Officially known as the Sovereign Military Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, the group was founded with a pilgrims' hospice in 11th century Jerusalem and has the status of an independent state. It maintains diplomatic relations with 100 nations, increased from 49 at the start of Bertie's tenure.
The Knights of Malta has 12,500 members and operates in 120 countries, providing medical and social services, particularly in war zones and impoverished areas.
The grand commander of the order, Fra Giacomo della Torre, was sworn in as interim head of the group until a new grand master is elected, the statement said.
Elected for life, the grand master carries the title of prince and the position is equal in rank to a cardinal. The grand master must have 200 years of nobility on both parents' sides and must have followed vows of poverty, obedience and chastity.

Modern-day knights "Sir" Dr. James Laws and "Sir" Edward Artis travel around the world to help people in need as part of the humanitarian organization they co-founded, Knightsbridge.org. Share
They've gone around the world eight or nine times, helping the poorest people in the most remote places on earth. Often, those places are hostile, and they put themselves in danger.
But Artis, 62, and Laws, 68, figure it sure beats playing golf to pass the time!
They've gone to war zones and storm zones, slept in palaces and potato cellars, met kings and spies, dealt with warlords and nuns, and faced it all with a unique sense of humor.
These two are not only adventurers, but amazing characters in their own right.
They are modern-day knights.
Harry Smith profiled them on The Early Show Tuesday.
Artis and Laws bring food, shelter, medicine and supplies to people who can't fend for themselves. They've been to Rwanda, Afghanistan and Bosnia. They've fed refugees of war, famine and natural disaster.
"We're a couple of old duffers," Artis says. "I mean, we're not buff, action hero kinda guys. We're shaped like pears. Can't hear, can't see. … But, on the day, we get the job done."
To the tune of more than $40 million worth of aid, begging, borrowing — even stealing and bribing when necessary — stumbling into minefields, rescuing nuns, and befriending the locals.
They've had things transported by the Italian army, and by rebel soldiers; they work with local warlords, and don't care about political fallout. All they care about is delivering the goods.
On one mission, Artis and Laws traveled for weeks, in cars and mules, and fought through jungles, just to take the rust off of a connecting cable to provide a village with power that had been off for several years. They also set up a hospital there.
Whenever they take any piece of technology to a village, whether it's a water pump, a solar oven or an X-ray machine, they don't leave until at least 10 people in the village can take it apart and put it back together again.
They've had more flat tires in a single journey than most people have in a lifetime.
Artis and Laws only do the missions they feel like doing, as long as they're "high adventure, as well as service to the community," says Laws.
They do it all through an organization they founded called Knightsbridge. They raise money like any charity but, says Smith, it's their ability to distribute large quantities of aid and medicine directly to the people at the end of the line that sets them apart.
All money donated to Knightsbridge goes directly to the mission. They have a laptop, satellite phones and no staff, so 100 percent of donated funds go to the cause.

On the Early Show, I heard Knights mentioned; I was flabbergasted to hear any mention of SMOM on TV. Mr Laws, one of the two gentlemen featured in the report spoke of something "being a good propaganda". What was that? Propaganda as in Communist Indoctrination (the little red book), or DAS Kapital. Then they showed Mr. Artis in a ceremony being inducted into the Knights of Malta. He also spoke about being proud to represent SMOM, and helping poor people around the underdeveloped world with food, medicine, and technology.
Do these people know, that other people know the 'real' nature of the Knights of Malta?
It isn't feeding hungry third world children? It's conduting Holy War for the Vatican!

Fra Andrew was admitted to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) in 1956; he took Perpetual Vows and in 1981 became a Religious member. He has contributed to the government of the Order since 1981 as a member of the Sovereign Council and in April 1988 he was elected the 78th Grand Master. He is Hospitaller of the Sanctuary of Lourdes. He succeeded the late Fra Angelo de Mojana, a Milanese nobleman who had served the Order as Grand Master since 1962 and accomplished a great deal of modernization to its organization. Although it is considered sovereign, the Order of Malta is also a religious order of the Catholic Church, so this election needed the ratification by the Pope (then John Paul II) and a secret ratification by the Black Pope, the General of the Jesuits who dominates the spiritual needs of the Knights and in reality functions as a mind controller for this bunch of highly qualified agents of the New World Order, this so called ratification was obtained on 11 April 1988. The Jesuit Order is an almost 500-year old covert operations, geo-political, male-only organization, structured as a secret military operation: demanding secret oaths and complete obedience to each direct superior, which is ultimately the Superior General (or the Black Pope, since he is always dressed in black and stands in the shadow of the white Pope).

Catholicism and the Holy Roman Empire
While the militaristic Roman Empire was collapsing, Pope Symmachus created the Vatican Palace in 514 as the seat of the "universal religion" called Catholicism. Catholicism itself was created about 150 years before that by Emperor Constantine I, using the first Council of Nicaea in 325, to control the political and spiritual uprisings among various tribes and slave groups. Thereby making Constantine I the first in a long series of Roman Emperors (or Popes) who explicitly wanted to completely rule over both the spiritual and political realm. With the struggle for religious and political freedom of the various Reformation movements, during the late Middle Ages and upto the 18th century, some lost terrain had been regained by the Protestant nations, but the losses have been enormous, and much of the authentic spiritual basis of Christianity-like cultures has been erased from the collective memory.

So the EU superstate project will ultimately breakdown. The only question is at what cost? The Euro is certainly an effective way to ease trade between nations, by reducing currency and legal friction. However, the private(!), pseudo non-profit(!) Federal Reserve Bank history has shown that monetary centralization can be very dangerous in several aspects:
Centrally controlled money supply and inflation,
Artificial boom-bust cycles,
Draconian 'rescue' plans after the bust cycles,
Increased poverty due to the long-term ineffectiveness of a central monetary system.
Monetary efficiency does not equal economic stability and financial sovereignty. The latter two are much more important in the long-term!

The supra-state projects such as the EU, NATO, UN must be partly dismantled, then reformed by primarily using collaborative agreements between each sovereign nation. The danger of a too centralized corrupt rule is far more serious than any local form of mafia corruption.
The Holy See / Vatican country state and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, must be stripped of any national sovereign status. These institutions must function within the national democracy and obey democratically chosen constitutional laws.
The Vatican and the whole Roman-Catholic organizational network must publicly and officially denounce any temporal power wish and acknowledge the extreme extent of their centuries long crimes against humanity.
The Jesuit-Vatican-Masonic mafia network who have participated in these crimes must be researched thoroughly (by an international group of independent researchers), then prosecuted and agree to pay compensations to victims (nations, groups and individuals). The criminal charges and the evidence must then be presented to the respective nations, for further action. No action on behalve of this research should lead to boycotts from nations, groups and individuals.
All the confirmed history falsification and conspiracy actions should be written down, and discussed in schools. The same goes for clear examples of media corporation censorship and distraction.
Proposals for actions for a more robust separation of Church and secret societies from the sovereign people of the State, using legal, political and educational means.
Special legislation against criminal secret societies (beyond any reasonably doubt, and beyond just organized crime) should be drafted and implemented, using the lessons of history.
