TEXAS SAYS BABY'S MOM NOT A SECT MINOR

Texas says baby’s mom not a sect minor

Child welfare officials tell judge Tuesday she is an adult

updated 11:37 p.m. ET, Tues., May. 13, 2008

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Texas child welfare officials conceded Tuesday that a newborn's mother, held in foster care as a minor after being removed from a polygamous sect's ranch, is an adult.

A Child Protective Services attorney told state District Judge Barbara Walther that the mother of a boy born April 29 is not a minor, as CPS had claimed as justification for holding her.

The woman had been held along with more than 400 children taken last month from a west Texas ranch run by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. State officials say the children were endangered by underage and polygamous spiritual marriages.

We were presented with credible evidence that this minor is, in fact, an adult," said CPS spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner.

She declined to say what the evidence was or how old the woman is. According to an FLDS spokesman, the new mother, Pamela Jeffs, is 18.

She was one of two pregnant sect members who state officials had said were minors. The other sect member, who gave birth to a son Monday, also may be an adult, state officials have said.

The mother in that case, Louisa Jessop, told NBC's TODAY Show that she is 22 and that she presented authorities with a driver's license and birth certificate to prove it.

But CPS spokesman Chris Van Deusen told NBC that the department has classified her as a "disputed minor," the term used for FLDS women whose age has not been established to the department's satisfaction. Until her age is established, authorities are treating her as if she is a minor.

Both mothers are with their babies, who are in state custody.

Convoluted identification process
CPS has complained that sect members have given different names and ages, confusing the identification process in one of the largest, most convoluted custody cases in U.S. history.

But FLDS spokesman Rod Parker has accused the state of holding on to pregnant women and treating them as minors to ensure the state could take custody of the newborns, who might otherwise be born outside of Texas. A call to Parker was not immediately returned Tuesday.

There are 27 claims of women being misidentified as girls when they were taken into state custody from the Yearning For Zion Ranch in Eldorado. If evidence is provided proving they are not minors, they will be released, Meisner said.

"We are still in the midst of an investigation. We continue to speak with the children, parents and others who have information that would be helpful to us," she said. "We cannot just dismiss these cases without credible evidence regarding their ages. We have an obligation to protect children."

The state's admission on Tuesday takes the total number of children in state custody down to 464.

In a separate case, a judge in San Antonio on Tuesday issued a temporary restraining order barring CPS from removing Lori Jessop from her son on his first birthday Thursday. Mothers with children younger than 12 months have been allowed to stay with them, but those who are older have been moved into foster care, away from their mothers.

Texas child welfare authorities took the FLDS children into custody on the argument that the polygamist sect abused children by pushing underage girls into marriage and sex and by raising boys to be future perpetrators. FLDS members have denied any abuse.

All the children are expected to get individual hearings starting May 19.

WOE TO THEM THAT ARE WITH CHILD...

Where's her American 'Mother's day' tradition?
.
.
.
But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days!
for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.
Matthew 24:23.
Overzealous government intrusive manipulation of God's children!
*

Mothers in Texas, in the United States, in the North American Union, can rest assured (be wary) that the militaristic police authorities are ready and able, to serve and protect. To inform you of where the child molesters live; who has child pornography on their computers; who's growing marijuana at home; that's why they have google Earth and the surveillance Satellites, helicopters, and drones. To prevent old men from marrying young women; To prevent parents from abusing their children; To advice you what your children should eat; Etc. This is what we're lead to believe.
.
.
Yet, if you should separate yourselves from the masses, and chose to live apart from all the corruption, your are on your own. And be prepared to be raided (RAID) like insects, and lose the authority over your children.
Be prepared to lose custody of your God given children! The New World Order social engineers will bring you before their rigged courts.....as in Kangaroo courts....and will prosecute and persecute you. They think their laws are just and their standards are fair. But, just look around the country, all you see is injustice, and the lawless rule the land....In the absence of God, all types of perversions are defended, while the righteous are mistreated and mocked. How much longer, dear Lord, will evil men triumph over your beloved servants?
The Lord is not deaf or blind to the atrocities committed against His faithful, or to our prayers.
Blessed be the Father, and His Son Jesus Christ.

America the Land of the free and the home of the brave:

The silence to all these travesties, trampling of our God given rights (Natural Laws) is deafening. Not a word from the conservative Christian Cadre; They are all asleep at the helm. The rest of the so-called Christians are busy worring about paying the mortgage, sending Junior to College so he can be successful, and keeping up with the Jones's chasing after F150's, Lincoln Navigators, Humbee 3's. Nascar dads and soccer moms are also asleep at the wheel chasing the American illusion; While a mockery of justice, an assault on the sovereignty of the family takes place in plain sight!

If a family (several) falls in Texas and there's no one listening; Does it make a noise?
Shame on a nation of "lovers of themselves"!

COUNSELS TO THE MAN (WOMAN) OF GOD

1Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.

2And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.

3If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

4He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

5Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

6But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

9But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

13I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;

14That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

15Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

16Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

17Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

18That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

19Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

20O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

21Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

Jingoism and Propaganda World War One and Acrobatic truths

Rxample of World War One jingoistic propagandaThe old man told me I could never understand the enthusiasm to join up in the first world war. “It was the feeling of national pride of King and country.” “You must have seen the tens of thousands waiting outside the recruiting offices on the old films, they wanted to have a crack at the Hun.” Propaganda in many forms was rife and found its target in a worried and angry people on both German and British sides.

Propaganda may be described as information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.

Or just a misleading truth or just acrobatic facts?

In John Buchan’s Thirty Nine Steps we read, ‘behind all Governments and Armies was a subterranean movement going on. I gather that most of the people in it were sort of educated anarchists that made revolution.’ He was not far from the truth as both sides and their allies grasped the opportunity to use whatever material available to denounce the enemy.

The British cut the German Atlantic Cable within hours of the war, beginning to isolate Germany and have the single advantage of informing a neutral America of our noble cause.

Propaganda from World War IThe soldiers and civilians of Britain and Germany were convinced God was on their side, and therefore presume the other was in league with the Devil. Gott Strafe England was a common call in Germany, for God to punish England. Our pulpits resounded with the belief of Gods involvement in our game.

The media rang the scare bell renouncing German and foreign names or pronunciations as works of the enemy.

The House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha changed to the House of Windsor and the Battenberg’s by Royal Warrant became Mountbatten. The Germans equally responded by renaming the Hotel Westminster to The Lindenhof. A confectioner was asked by a General to changed the name Bonbon for sounding too French. The confectioner replied as soon as the General stopped calling himself General. According to American Ernestine Bullitt the word lift was removed from her hotel elevator.

Norwegian sardines would not sell in Germany till they changed them to Hindenburg Sardines. In Britain, German biscuits became Empire Biscuits.

It was said one fifth of the British officers who volunteered at the start of the war were German descent, to avoid accusations of treason. German sausage dogs were hissed and attacked in the streets.

G.K. Chesterton in his book The Barbarism of Berlin, wrote about peace loving people as weak. He states. ‘If he hits his neighbour on the head with the kitchen chopper, what do we do? Do we all join hands, like children playing Mulberry Bush.’ It appears as an invitation to clobber the neighbour and teach him a lesson.

Gilbert Macdermot reintroduced a song that jingoed. ‘We don’t want to fight. But by jingo if we do. We’ve got the ships, we’ve got the men.’ The meaning was plain, we are ready to have a go at Gerry. Mocking cards with pictures of the allies marching to certain victory were seen as mail with a message. They covered the full range of human emotions from love, nostalgia and humour recognisable to those at the front and at home.

The execution of Nurse Cavell while serving in Belgium accused of helping French and British prisoners escape, was a poignant reminder of the brutish Hun. Nurse Cavell, a Norfolk girl, had just lost her husband and was weeding her mothers garden, when she heard war had broke out. She declared, “I am needed more than ever.” A card showing the dastardly deed would more than energise the sender and reader. It would reveal the German political philosophy as inferior, callous and merciless. Embroidered silk cards titled TO MY DEAR MOTHER were the most popular and treasured as mementoes of sons over there.

Posters potent and colourful showing Women on the phone lines in France, Take up the Sword of Justice, Back our Girls Over There, You Drive a car Here -Why not a Transport in France. The output was enormous and diverse.

Example of German propaganda postcard from WWI
In Germany dancing in public was banned. The speaking of English was forbidden in public, but not in School lessons.

At first the school children got a holiday on each German victory. In towns and villages Hindenburg wooden statues were erected and people drove in iron nails to make Hindenburg into an iron effigy.

Before the war, working class women were usually employed as domestic servants, and used for the most unclean of jobs.

WWI German propaganda cardWhen the war broke out they were expected to encourage the men to join up and fight for their country. Admiral Fitzgerald instigated the Order of the White Feather encouraging women to hand out feathers to young men not in uniform.

German propaganada imageAlbert Einstein, after seeing this display thought it would be a good idea if woman were in the next war, as it may inject some humour into it.

Compton McKenzie said the white feathers were used by women to get rid of boy friends they were tired of.

A few days after the war started most Suffrages suspended their effective political actions. The government responded by releasing all the suffragettes from prison as a gesture to encourage their help in the war effort. Women on both sides now worked in factories, drove busses and trains. Women were employed to fill the industries needed in wartime including engineering. The Punch Magazine wrote.‘It is quite impossible to keep pace with all the new incarnations of women in war-time.’

Evelyn Sharp later wrote. ‘Certainly, by their four years' war work, they did prove the fallacy of the anti-suffragist' favourite argument, that women had no right to a voice in questions of peace and war because they took no part in it.’

America was neutral and President Wilson reminded the Populace in January of 1916, he stated that, "so far as I can remember, this is a government of the people, and this people is not going to choose war." But deliberately the Germans on May 7th 1915 torpedoed the Lusitania, Captain Turner gave the order to abandon ship unfortunately the hole made by the torpedo caused the ship to list making it difficult to launch all life boats and 128 Americans lost their lives. In America and Britain the propaganda opportunity was not lost and the sinking of the Lusitania was reported as ‘A most dastardly crime by a callous foe murdering innocent women, children and men, which should bring upon the whole German nation the execration of the whole civilised world.’
In 1917 when America did enter the war, Radio stations in the U.S. had become a government monopoly, reserved for the war effort.

As German defeat approached ,the mood began to change. Rationing was severe and hunger became the norm. ‘I am proud of thirst and Hunger for the Fatherland,’ was a note of defiance.
The inevitable happened and Germany sank to defeat. Still the propaganda continued. ’Shine Out Holy Flame, Shine Out Through The Darkness, For the Fatherland.’

Adolph Hitler in his Mein Kampf Chapter VI talked of the success of British propaganda. ‘How effective this type of propaganda was is most strikingly shown by the fact that after four years of war it not only enabled the enemy to stick to its guns, but even began to nibble at our own people.’
In 1920 British and German War Propaganda was heavily criticised as simple myths. But was it effective?

I asked the old man and he relied, “Do you believe everything you read in the papers?” “No, I said.” Then the old man asked,” do you then repeat what you do not believe?” I had to admit the answer was yes.

THE EVANGELICAL MANIFESTO: WHAT IT MEANS

The Evangelical Manifesto: What It Means

An important new statement says theological principles should trump policy preferences

Posted May 13, 2008

Charging that the word "evangelical" has been hijacked by politics, a group of prominent evangelicals last week announced the publication of a 19-page manifesto asserting that theological principles should be more important than any policy preferences in defining a movement that now claims roughly 4 out of 10 Americans. But while the drafters of the manifesto hoped to raise evangelicalism above the political fray, some reactions to the document are already revealing a strongly political tenor.

Worshippers gather for a service led by Dr. James Dobson, a child psychologist and founder of Focus on the Family.

(Kevin Horan/Aurora for USN&WR)
The document, drafted over three years by nine evangelical theologians and writers, is largely the brainchild of social critic Os Guinness, whose most recent book, The Case for Civility: And Why Our Future Depends on It, develops many of the same themes on religion and public life that are addressed in the manifesto. Initial signers included almost 80 pastors, theologians, activists, and others representing a fairly broad spectrum within the movement, from Jim Wallis, founder of Sojourners magazine, on the liberal end to James Tonkowich, president of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, on the more conservative. But the absence of many leading conservative evangelicals from the list of original signers, including Focus on the Family's James Dobson, supports what some observers are already saying about the manifesto: that it is a strong rebuke to the religious right.

Not so, say the drafters of the document, who claim that they seek to move evangelicalism out of fealty to any one political camp. Using faith "to express essentially political points" leads to Christians becoming " 'useful idiots' for one party or the other," the document reads. And more pointedly, the manifesto goes on to say that "it would be no improvement to respond to a weakening of the religious right with a rejuvenation of the religious left."

Yet it is hard not to hear both in the document itself and in the words of the drafters a somewhat harder critique of the right's influence on evangelicalism—perhaps understandably, given the prominent role of the religious right in bringing evangelicalism more to the center of public life and debate in the past four decades. "Those on the right say that they aren't acknowledged for what conservatives have accomplished, whether in the Supreme Court or the battle to preserve the historic meaning of marriage or in keeping the debate over abortion alive," says Michael Cromartie, director of the Evangelical Studies Project at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. He also reports that some conservative activists see the document as an overly academic criticism by "those who critique those who do."

Speaking for his fellow drafters, Guinness insists that they were not trying to repudiate the substance of what the religious right has fought for but instead the manner in which its leaders often fought. "The issues of life and marriage are crucial," he says, "but the appeal to fear or hatred is not a Christian approach."

Far from calling on evangelicals to withdraw from public life, the manifesto urges them to fight for issues deriving from Christian beliefs in a way that preserves a civil public square and that never "equates" them with any party or party ideology. It also takes issue with partisans of either the "sacred public square" in which any religion is given a preferred place or the "naked public square" in which religious perspectives are entirely excluded. The civil public square, the manifesto says, "is a vision of public life in which citizens of all faiths are free to enter and engage the public square on the basis of their faith, but within a framework of what is agreed to be just and free for other faiths too." The authors of the document add that secularists are just as entitled to this space as any believers are.

If all that seems to suggest a reasonable middle way, why are some leading evangelical thinkers not adding their names to the manifesto? Richard Land, head of the public policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, says he was not invited to sign—an oversight, the manifesto authors say, but not an intentional slight. Now that he has read it, Land says that he agrees with 90 percent of its contents but still will not sign. A crucial 10 percent, he says, suffers from language that is "at the very best imprecise or at the very best obtuse," problems that he finds typical of most documents written by committees.

THE COMING FOOD CATASTROPHE

25 March 2008

The Coming Food Catastrophe

By Gwynne Dyer

"This is the new face of hunger," said Josetta Sheeran, director of
the World Food Programme, launching an appeal for an extra $500 million so
it could continue supplying food aid to 73 million hungry people this year.
"People are simply being priced out of food markets....We have never before
had a situation where aggressive rises in food prices keep pricing our
operations out of our reach."

The WFP decided on a public appeal three weeks ago because the
price of the food it buys to feed some of the world's poorest people had
risen by 55 percent since last June. By the time it actually launched the
appeal this week, prices had risen a further 20 percent, so now it needs
$700 million to bridge the gap between last year's budget and this year's
prices.

In Thailand, farmers are sleeping in their fields after reports
that thieves are stealing the rice, now worth $600 a tonne, straight out of
the fields. Four people have died in Egypt in clashes over subsidised flour
that was being sold for profit on the black market. There have been food
riots in Morocco, Senegal and Cameroon.

Last year it became clear that the era of cheap food was over: food
costs world-wide rose by 23 percent between 2006 and 2007. This year, what
is becoming clear is the impact of this change on ordinary people's lives.

For consumers in Japan, France or the United States, the relentless
price rises for food are an unwelcome extra pressure on an already
stretched household budget. For less fortunate people in other places, they
can mean less protein in the diet, or choosing between feeding the kids
breakfast and paying their school fees, or even, in the poorest
communities, starvation. And the crisis is only getting started.

It is the perfect storm: everything is going wrong at once. To
begin with, the world's population has continued to grow while its food
production has not. For the fifty years between 1945 and 1995, as the
world's population more than doubled, grain production kept pace -- but
then it stalled. In six of the past seven years, the human race has
consumed more grain than it grew. World grain reserves last year were only
57 days, down from 180 days a decade ago.

To make matters worse, demand for food is growing faster than
population. As incomes rise in China, India and other countries with
fast-growing economies, consumers include more and more meat in their diet:
the average Chinese citizen now eats 50 kilos (110 lbs) of meat a year, up
from 20 kilos (44 lbs) in the mid-1980s. Producing meat consumes enormous
quantities of grain.

Then there is global warming, which is probably already cutting
into food production. Many people in Australia, formerly the world's
second-largest wheat exporter, suspect that climate change is the real
reason for the prolonged drought that is destroying the country's ability
to export food.

But the worst damage is being done by the rage for "bio-fuels" that
supposedly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and fight climate change. (But
they don't, really -- at least, not in their present form.) Thirty percent
of this year's US grain harvest will go straight to an ethanol distillery,
and the European Union is aiming to provide 10 percent of the fuel used for
transport from bio-fuels by 2010. A huge amount of the world's farmland is
being diverted to feed cars, not people.

Worse yet, rainforest is being cleared, especially in Brazil and
Indonesia, to grow more bio-fuels. A recent study in the US journal
"Science" calculated that destroying natural ecosystems to grow corn
(maize, mealies) or sugar cane for ethanol, or oil palms or soybeans for
bio-diesel, releases between 17 and 420 times more carbon dioxide than is
saved annually by burning the bio-fuel grown on that land instead of fossil
fuel. It's all justified in the name of fighting climate change, but the
numbers just don't add up.

"It would obviously be insane if we had a policy to try and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions through the use of bio-fuels that's actually
leading to an increase in greenhouse gases," said Professor Robert Watson,
former chief scientific adviser to the World Bank and now filling the same
role at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in London.
But that is the policy, both in Europe and in the United States.

This is the one element in the "perfect storm" that is completely
under human control. Governments can simply stop creating artificial demand
for the current generation of bio-fuels (and often directly subsidising
them). That land goes back to growing food instead, and prices fall.
Climate change is a real threat, but we don't have to have this crisis now.

"If...more and more land (is) diverted for industrial bio-fuels to
keep cars running, we have two years before a food catastrophe breaks out
world-wide," said Vandana Shiva, director of the India-based Research
Foundation for Science, Technology and Natural Resource Policy, in an
interview last week. "It'll be twenty years before climate catastrophe
breaks out, but the false solutions to climate change are creating
catastrophes that will be much more rapid than the climate change itself."

DUCK AND COVER: IT'S THE NEW SURVIVALISM

Duck and Cover: It’s the New Survivalism

Published: April 6, 2008

THE traditional face of survivalism is that of a shaggy loner in camouflage, holed up in a cabin in the wilderness and surrounded by cases of canned goods and ammunition.

Corbis

DUGOUT A father and daughter enter a Cold War bomb shelter.

Warner Brothers Pictures

ALIVE AND ALONE Will Smith stars in “I Am Legend” as a survivor of a man-made virus, walking New York’s desolate streets.

It is not that of Barton M. Biggs, the former chief global strategist at Morgan Stanley. Yet in Mr. Biggs’s new book, “Wealth, War and Wisdom,” he says people should “assume the possibility of a breakdown of the civilized infrastructure.”

“Your safe haven must be self-sufficient and capable of growing some kind of food,” Mr. Biggs writes. “It should be well-stocked with seed, fertilizer, canned food, wine, medicine, clothes, etc. Think Swiss Family Robinson. Even in America and Europe there could be moments of riot and rebellion when law and order temporarily completely breaks down.”

Survivalism, it seems, is not just for survivalists anymore.

Faced with a confluence of diverse threats — a tanking economy, a housing crisis, looming environmental disasters, and a sharp spike in oil prices — people who do not consider themselves extremists are starting to discuss doomsday measures once associated with the social fringes.

They stockpile or grow food in case of a supply breakdown, or buy precious metals in case of economic collapse. Some try to take their houses off the electricity grid, or plan safe houses far away. The point is not to drop out of society, but to be prepared in case the future turns out like something out of “An Inconvenient Truth,” if not “Mad Max.”

“I’m not a gun-nut, camo-wearing skinhead. I don’t even hunt or fish,” said Bill Marcom, 53, a construction executive in Dallas.

Still, motivated by a belief that the credit crunch and a bursting housing bubble might spark widespread economic chaos — “the Greater Depression,” as he put it — Mr. Marcom began to take measures to prepare for the unknown over the last few years: buying old silver coins to use as currency; buying G.P.S. units, a satellite telephone and a hydroponic kit; and building a simple cabin in a remote West Texas desert.

“If all these planets line up and things do get really bad,” Mr. Marcom said, “those who have not prepared will be trapped in the city with thousands of other people needing food and propane and everything else.”

Interest in survivalism — in either its traditional hard-core version or a middle-class “lite” variation — functions as a leading economic indicator of social anxiety, preparedness experts said: It spikes at times of peril real (the post-Sept. 11 period) or imagined (the chaos that was supposed to follow the so-called Y2K computer bug in 2000).

At times, a degree of paranoia is officially sanctioned. In the 1950s, civil defense authorities encouraged people to build personal bomb shelters because of the nuclear threat. In 2003, the Department of Homeland Security encouraged Americans to stock up on plastic sheeting and duct tape to seal windows in case of biological or chemical attacks.

Now, however, the government, while still conducting business under a yellow terrorism alert, is no longer taking a lead role in encouraging preparedness. For some, this leaves a vacuum of reassurance, and plenty to worry about.

Esteemed economists debate whether the credit crisis could result in a complete meltdown of the financial system. A former vice president of the United States informs us that global warming could result in mass flooding, disease and starvation, perhaps even a new Ice Age.

“You just can’t help wonder if there’s a train wreck coming,” said David Anderson, 50, a database administrator in Colorado Springs who said he was moved by economic uncertainties and high energy prices, among other factors, to stockpile months’ worth of canned goods in his basement for his wife, his two young children and himself.

Popular culture also provides reinforcement, in books like “The Road,” Cormac McCarthy’s novel about a father and son journeying through a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and films like “I Am Legend,” which stars Will Smith as a survivor of a man-made virus wandering the barren streets of New York.

Middle-class survivalists can also browse among a growing number of how-to books with titles like “Dare to Prepare!” a self-published work by Holly Drennan Deyo, or “When All Hell Breaks Loose” by Cody Lundin (Gibbs Smith, 2007), which instructs readers how to dispose of bodies and dine on rats and dogs in the event of disaster.

FARMER PAYOUTS, OIL NABBED IN FOOD PRICE JUMP

Farmer payouts, oil nabbed in food price runup

Congressional panel probes food inflation. Lawmaker blames subsidies to farmers but farming representative cites oil prices as 'main culprit.'

By Aaron Smith, CNNMoney.com staff writer
Last Updated: May 1, 2008: 4:34 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Lawmakers on Thursday scrutinized the impact of soaring food costs on American consumers already stung by rising gas prices.

"The anxiety felt over higher food prices is going to be just as widespread, and will equal or surpass, the anger and frustrations so many Americans have about higher gas prices," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, which convened the hearing amid growing concern about food inflation.

Some lawmakers heaped blame on farmers - and the subsidies they receive - for helping to drive up food costs. Rep. Jim Saxton, R-N.J., called for "genuine reform" of the "nightmare of wasteful, outdated [farm] subsidies."

The meeting followed comments on Tuesday from President Bush, who referred to the farm bill in Congress as "bloated" and incapable of significantly reducing food prices.

The bill would cut the 51-cent-a-gallon ethanol subsidy to 45 cents, according to news reports. Farmers who make up to $2.5 million are eligible for subsidies, but the bill would drop eligibility to $1 million or less.

Tom Buis, president of the National Farmer's Union and a former corn farmer from Indiana, defended farmers before the committee.

"Everybody seems to be wanting to blame the farmer for everything bad happening in America and around the world," said Buis. "Some people think that profit should be a dirty word only for American farmers."

Corn farmers have been blamed for everything from the rising price of beer in the United States to pasta riots in Italy, Buis said. But, he added, half of all corn is used to cattle feed and much of it is used for soda syrup.

"To make the equation that corn is taking food out of people's mouths is a real stretch," Buis said.

Buis blamed oil prices as "the real culprit," and said the situation had been exacerbated by weather conditions affecting wheat growers around the world.

For his part, Schumer pointed to a number of factors for rising food costs. Surging energy and commodities were the "main culprits" in driving up food prices, he said, while also pointing the finger at the rising cost of corn grown for ethanol production.

"High gasoline prices don't just raise transportation costs - they increase demand for gasoline substitutes, mainly ethanol derived from corn," said Schumer.

Food costs hit middle America

Americans spent an average of $1,926 on groceries per person in 2007, a 4.2% increase from the prior year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The department projects another 4.5% increase in 2008, to $2,013.

Certain foods have spiked dramatically over the past year. The price of eggs surged nearly 30%, while milk and flour jumped more than 13% and rice rose nearly 10%, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Food inflation has become a global problem. This year, food riots have broken out in Egypt, Haiti, Yemen, Bangladesh and other nations. On Tuesday, the United Nations formed a task force to deal with the problem.

Even in America, the specter of hunger is growing for many low-income families, including former high-income earners who recently lost their jobs.

George Braley, senior vice president of America's Second Harvest, the largest hunger relief organization in the United States, testified that the rising prices are taking their toll, as annual donations to the organization "remain frozen" at $140 million.

"Costs are eating up our surpluses," said Braley. "We need to buy more food, but the money is not there. These are very discouraging times."

Many factors pushing up the price of food

Dr. Joseph Glauber, chief economist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, said the price increase in 2007 for all food was the largest annual jump since 1990. He blamed it on worldwide economic growth, weather factors in parts of the world, restrictions on food exports and the relatively new biofuel industry.

In particular, he said the two-year drought in Australia has pushed up wheat prices, and said there have also been poor crops in Canada, Europe and the Ukraine.

Corn production has increased, with 93.6 million acres planted in 2007 - the biggest crop since the wartime harvest of 1944. Despite that, prices are projected to reach a record of between $4.10 to $4.50 a bushel in 2007-2008, up from $3.04 in the prior 12-month period, according to Glauber.

"Demand is expected to remain strong, supported by expanding use for ethanol," said Glauber, noting that 24% of the corn grown in the U.S. is being converted to ethanol.

Rising oil prices are feeding the demand for alternative sources of fuel. Oil prices were $111 a barrel on Thursday, up 75% from a year ago. Gasoline, at a nationwide average of $3.62 a gallon, is up 20% from a year ago, according to motorist organization AAA.

SPRING GREENS WITH FENNEL AND HERBS

May 14, 2008 / 9 Iyar 5768

Spring greens with fennel and herbs

By Jill Wendholt Silva

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com The arrival of true spring salad greens is always an exhilarating moment. After a long winter's yawn, the delicate leaves signal the start of lighter, more healthful meals.

Spring greens — usually a combination of mizuna, tatsoi, red oakleaf, sorrel, arugula and frisee — used to show up only at high-end restaurants but recently has become a year-round staple in supermarket produce aisles.

The Star's Spring Greens With Fennel and Herbs is a fresh, clean-tasting combination of greens and fresh herbs. Adding fresh herbs has its perks: Tarragon contains terpene, a phytochemical that helps to stimulate cancer-protective enzymes, and parsley contains powerful antioxidants that stimulate the immune system.

Fresh green beans are low in calories, fat and sodium but high in fiber, vitamins A and C and potassium, while a blush of red radish adds eye appeal.

Fennel adds a lovely bite. Bonus: It's rich in vitamin A and contains fair amounts of potassium, phosphorous and calcium.

Finally, a homemade vinaigrette gives this salad a sprightly finish. Why make your own when the produce department is brimming with bottled and jarred concoctions? Only you can eliminate added (and often unpronounceable) preservatives.

Shopping tips: Fennel looks a bit like an alien spaceship. The antennae "fronds" should be bright green, and the "pod" or bulb should be creamy white without any brown spots.

You can buy bagged or boxed spring greens in the produce section of your supermarket, or you can buy individual heads of lettuce and devise your own mix; see Heads or Bags? on E5. Just keep in mind that the darker the greens, the more good-for-you nutrients they contain.

PREPARATION TIP:

  • Slice off and discard the fennel fronds. Slice the bulb as you would an onion
STORAGE TIP:

  • Fennel will keep for up to a week if refrigerated in a ziptop plastic storage bag

Pastor John Hagee says he's sorry for anti-Catholic remarks

Hagee, who supports John McCain for president, expresses 'deep regret for any comments Catholics found hurtful.' The Catholic League accepts his apology.

By Maeve Reston, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer May 14, 2008

SEATTLE -- An evangelical pastor who backs John McCain tried to put his controversial remarks about the Catholic Church behind him, apologizing to the head of the Catholic League and expressing "deep regret for any comments Catholics found hurtful."Pastor John Hagee, who heads the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, said in a letter made public Tuesday that he now knew the terms he used to describe the church, such as "the great whore," were "rhetorical devices long employed in anti-Catholic literature."

John McCain outlines a plan to tackle global warming

Video: Campaign '08
To win over evangelicals, McCain sought Hagee's support when he launched his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. But his campaign was caught off guard by the uproar over controversial comments Hagee has made about the Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic League called on McCain to repudiate Hagee, saying that he had "waged an unrelenting war" against the church and had called it a "false cult system," among other derogatory terms. Hagee also said the damage Hurricane Katrina inflicted on New Orleans was "the judgment of God" on the city's "sin."McCain called Hagee's apology helpful. "Whenever someone apologizes for something they did wrong, then I think that's a laudable thing to do," he said. The Arizona senator had initially waved off the criticisms, asserting that just because Hagee endorsed him did not mean that McCain embraced "everything that he stands for and believes in." He later distanced himself from the remarks and, on a recent visit to New Orleans, he called Hagee's comments "nonsense." McCain had also rejected any comparison with the criticism aimed at Sen. Barack Obama for controversial statements made by the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., who lead Obama's church for 20 years. McCain noted that Hagee was not his pastor. In his letter, Hagee said he had gained a better understanding in recent weeks of the Catholic Church's relationship to the Jewish faith. He wrote of his "profound respect for the Catholic people" and said he hoped to advance "greater unity among Catholics and evangelicals." The Catholic League said in a statement that it accepted the apology."Pastor John Hagee has demonstrated an improved understanding of the Catholic Church and its history," Catholic League President Bill Donohue said in a statement. "The tone of Hagee's letter is sincere. He wants reconciliation and he has achieved it."McCain said he was pleased by the exchange. "That's the kind of reconciliation that I've been engaged in for many, many years," he said.Asked whether he or his campaign was involved in brokering the reconciliation, McCain said: "I certainly wasn't."McCain was on the second day of his environmental tour of the Pacific Northwest. In North Bend, Wash., he escalated his criticism of President Bush in what is becoming a pattern of distancing himself from the president."There's a long-standing, significant, deep and strong difference on this issue between myself and the administration," McCain said at the Cedar River Watershed Education Center above Rattlesnake Lake, with acres of dense forest as his backdrop.McCain, who has sponsored a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, said his rivals had "never, to my knowledge, been involved in legislation nor hearings nor engagement in this issue," even though both Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton co-sponsored his global warming legislation in 2007 and now back more aggressive measures.mailto:measures.maeve.reston@latimes.com

Adventism Proclaimed
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

Set in the context of the three angels' messages, this is the message which will go forth with unprecedented power, symbolized by the loud cry of the fourth angel of Revelation 18:1-5, lightening the earth with his glory. It is a message that will go "to every nation, and kindred, and tongue and people" (Revelation 14:6). These messages, so vital that the eternal destiny of all mankind depends upon their reception, are carefully explained by the authors, both of whom are ordained ministers. This book aims to motivate preparation for the coming of the Lord and to point out the urgency of sharing this message with others. (202 pages)

#AVIN1RS

Adventism Vindicated
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

In the late 1970s the "new theology" was rapidly engulfing a confused and uncertain SDA church as a reaction to legalistic principles. Tragically, many who found the impotency of legalism were deceived into accepting a theology which claims that there are no divine conditions of salvation, a belief that denies the truth that victorious Christian living is both possible and mandated in Scripture. This book is far more relevant today than when it was first written. For this reason, the authors decided to leave its content unchanged, for it continues to provide answers to the challenges that have come through later writers and that continue to be current. The Greatest of All Prophets
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

In 2004, under the guise of protecting the Spirit of Prophecy, the South Pacific Division launched an eight-pronged attack against the Testimonies of God. This book thoroughly documents this attack and the parallel defaming of Scripture. The "errors" of the Scriptures and the Spirit of Prophecy are examined in detail and refuted. The book sets forth the inerrant, infallible character of God-inspired messages and establishes our faith, essential for those who love and trust God and truly desire salvation. It sets forth and exposes the fearful sophistries which are deceiving God's people today. This book is for every church leader, theologian, pastor, elder, and member. It is a book for its time. The General Conference Confronts Apostasy
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

No other historical volume has documented in detail the manner in which church leaders have dealt with apostasy in our midst from its earliest times. Commencing with fanatical worship services, moving to the Messenger and the Marian offshoots, the entry of what is now commonly known as the "new theology" with the defection of Pastor Dudley Canright, this book takes up the earth-shattering 1888 General Conference session, the promotion of pantheism, the holy flesh movement of Indiana in 1900, hierarchical church governance, the issue of self-supporting work, the military issue of World War I, and the trend-setting 1919 Bible conference, presenting the impact of each one upon God's church today. The Gathering Storm and The Storm Burst
by Russell R. Standish & Colin D. Standish

The Seventh-day Adventist Church experienced a tragic and dramatic redirection of its doctrines and practices beginning in the mid-1950s. In this book, the authors have traced the only authentic, comprehensive development of this tragic area in God's remnant Church. They saw the play and interplay of many of those who were key figures in the deliberate and planned efforts of men, some in high places, to undermine the pillars of our faith. The authors detail how the new theology was imported from Australia to the United States and other parts of the world. The authors also document the earnest efforts of many leaders and laity to stay the plague of unfaithfulness to the truth. (421 pages)

Half a Century of Apostasy
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

The 50-year period of 1956 to 2006 was the Mount Carmel era in God's Seventh-day Adventist Church. Elijah's words echo in our ears today. "How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him but if Baal, then follow him." (1 Kings 18:21) Never, in any book outside Scripture and the Spirit of Prophecy, has a volume been written which has set forth so clearly the manifest departure from God's pure truth by His church. Each brief chapter, like the Elijah message, is an urgent call for reform in the power of the Holy Spirit. It is time to open the eyes of the spiritually blind. Under God's guidance it is the authors' prayer that this book will achieve this aim in the hearts of sincere believers. (480 pages)

Holy Relics or Revelation
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

For the devout Christian, faith is anchored in the revealed Word. When Biblical archeology confirms the Scriptures, it stirs the heart. Biblical archaeologists have gathered data with painstaking effort. Their work proves the accuracy of the Bible. Yet mostly within a single decade, Ron Wyatt sought out and claimed the most amazing Biblical sites and relics. In this book, the Standish brothers examine the Wyatt claims in-depth, going beyond his videotaped claims. These findings can serve as a benchmark upon which Ron Wyatt's "discoveries" can be more carefully evaluated. (300 pages)

#QODO3RS

A History of Questions on Doctrine: Fidelity or Compromise
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

God chose the Seventh-day Adventist Church to undertake the most sacred work ever committed to humans. One of Satan's most successful strategies was the foisting of the book Questions on Doctrine upon God's precious church. As a result, the omega of apostasy has been strongly advanced. At Andrews University, October 2007, Russell Standish, was invited to present a paper to the QOD 50th Anniversary Conference. The paper presented by Russell analyzed the history of subterfuge, deception and intrigue that led up to and followed the publication of Questions on Doctrine. This book is a companion volume to the analysis of the theology of QOD, presented by Colin at the same Conference. (160 pages)

The Road to Rome
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

Ellen White wrote, "The church has turned back from following Christ, her Leader, and is steadily retreating toward Egypt." (Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 217. It is high time that we evaluate how far we have traveled down the road to Rome. With deep sensitivity and a passionate love for their church, the authors have uncovered what many will recognize as an orchestrated plan to systematically implement the catholicizing of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The authors present this book with the sincere prayer that all who read will join the crusade, under the blood-stained banner of Prince Emmanuel, to expel the Satanic invasion from God's beloved church. The Sepulchres Are Whited
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

We are at the end of the end of probationary time. If God's church is to receive the full outpouring of the latter rain, there must be a return to truth and righteousness. This alone will provide the unity that God can honor with His Spirit. This book is written to stimulate such a reformation in our ranks. (301 pages)

The Twenty-eight Fundamentals
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

The Big Bang Exploded
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

For decades the "big bang" hypothesis has held sway as the dominant explanation of the origin of the universe, yet the determined efforts of scientists from many disciplines to provide powerful confirmation of this hypothesis have been strikingly elusive. The authors assert that the "big bang" theory and Darwin's proposal of natural selection are "spent, decayed and archaic theories." The Standish brothers seriously address some of the most startling challenges to this theory of origins. They present evidence which they assert supports, far more closely, the fiat creation concept than the evolutionary model. (218 pages)

Modern Bible Translations Unmasked
by Russell R. & Colin D. Standish

This fascinating book challenges the reader to consider two very serious problems with modern translations: first, the use of corrupted Greek manuscripts, and second, translational bias. While they are deeply concerned about the paraphrases and some of the efforts to translate the Bible into colloquial language, the authors are also deeply concerned about the more respected translations that are gaining great acceptance in today's society. The authors believe that the modern translations are designed to reinforce false teachings and erroneous gospel presentations and therefore are dangerous to our salvation. (228 pages)

From times immemorial, death has both fascinated and mystified man. That every individual knows that death will eventually be his lot is without doubt. "For the living know that they shall die...." Ecclesiastes 9:5.

What happens, if anything, after death? Without doubt, this question has exercised the minds of the world's greatest thinkers. Total oblivion, posthumous "immortality," or reincarnation? These are some of the themes that modern man clings to, not knowing the truth. That truth is unveiled in the pages of The Mystery of Death, illuminated by the Word of God. (125 pages)
