Pig, Smoke, Pit: This Food Is Seriously Slow

Scott's Bar-B-Q in Hemingway, S.C. draws local people as well as day-trippers.

AT 3:45 on a recent Saturday morning — as frogs croaked into the void and a mufflerless pickup downshifted onto Cow Head Road — Rodney Scott, 37, pitmaster here at Scott’s Variety Store and Bar-B-Q, gave the order.

“Flip the pigs,” he said, his voice calm and measured. “Let’s go. Some char is good — too much and we lose him.”

A. J. Shaw, a college student home for the summer, and Thomas Lewis, a onetime farmer, left their seats and joined Mr. Scott in the pit room, a rectangular shed dominated by two waist-high concrete banks, burnished ebony by wood smoke, ash and grease.

Ten butterflied pig carcasses — taut bellies gone slack, pink flesh gone cordovan — were in the pits when Mr. Lewis reached for the sheet of wire fencing on which one of the pigs had been roasting since 4 the previous afternoon. In lockstep, Mr. Shaw topped that same pig with a second sheet of fencing, reached his gloved fingers into the netting, and grabbed hold.
As the men struggled, the 150 pounds of dead weight torqued the makeshift wire cage. When the carcass landed, skin-side down, on the metal grid of a recently fired pit, skeins of grease trailed down the pig’s flanks, and the smoldering oak and hickory coals beneath hissed and flared.

“I cooked my first one when I was 11,” Mr. Scott said, as he seasoned the pig with lashings of salt, red pepper, black pepper and Accent, a flavor enhancer made with MSG.

Working a long-handled mop, he drenched the pig in a vinegar sauce of a similar peppery composition. “You’ve got to always be on point, when you’re cooking this way,” he said.
Cooking this way isn’t done much any more. This place, a couple of hours northwest of Charleston, as well as the Scott family approach to slow-smoking whole hogs over hardwood coals, appears to be vestigial.

For aficionados in search of ever-elusive authenticity, Scott’s offers all the rural tropes of a signal American barbecue joint. The main building is tin-roofed and time-worn. Dogs loll in the parking lot, where old shopping carts are stacked with watermelons in the summer, sweet potatoes in the fall. On church pews under the eave, locals visit with neighbors and barbecue pilgrims commune with foam clamshells stuffed with pulled pork, $8 a pound.

The cookery is simple, but the processes used by the Scott family are not.

In the manner now expected of the nation’s white-tablecloth chefs, the Scotts shop local, whenever possible. They buy pigs from farms in three nearby counties. And they turn to Mel’s Meat Market, in the nearby town of Aynor, for butcher work and delivery.

That commitment to local sources extends to the tools of their trade. A local welder constructs the burn barrels, where wood burns down into coals, from salvaged industrial piping and junked truck axles, the latter from a mechanic just down the road.

And then there’s the issue of the wood itself. Barbecue, as it’s traditionally defined in the South, requires loads of it. Some North Carolina restaurants buy surplus oak flooring from planing mills. Some Tennessee pitmasters bargain for hickory off-cuts from ax-handle manufacturers.

The Scotts take matters into their own hands. They trade labor and chainsaw expertise for oak, hickory and, occasionally, pecan. “If you have a tree down, we oblige,” Rodney Scott said that afternoon, following the all-night pit vigil. As he talked, his father, Roosevelt Scott, 67, founder of Scott’s, stood on the highway, negotiating with a man who had arrived with a limb from a live oak and the promise of two to three truckloads of pit fuel.

“We keep our own wood in reserve,” the younger Mr. Scott said. “We’ve got 100 acres. But most of it comes walking in. Everybody knows we’ll bring some boys and cut your tree for you, so long as we can get to it and it’s not hanging over your house or your garage.”

The crowd that Saturday afternoon was typical: Half black and half white, half locals and half pilgrims.

Locals, many of whom work at the Tupperware plant, on the other end of Cow Head Road, came to pick up half-pound orders, pulled from various quadrants of the pig and tossed with sauce in the manner of a meat salad. They knew to ask Virginia Washington — Rodney Scott’s cousin, the woman behind the high-top order counter — for a cook’s treat of fried pig skin, still smoky from the pit, still crisp from the deep fryer.

P.S.
I include this story to prove one of the comments to the article below...
I saw this article "after" having alluded to the consumption of pork and barbecue.
People, we're being fed a bunch of hogwash!
All over again, like in the good olde days......

Swift Overhaul Moves Ahead as Fiat Acquires Chrysler Assets

With the touch of pen to paper and a simple wire transfer, Chrysler completed its deal with Fiat on Wednesday morning, largely ending its quick trip through bankruptcy.

The last obstacle to an exit — a temporary stay imposed by the Supreme Court — was lifted late Tuesday, after the nine justices declined to hear a challenge of the deal by three Indiana state funds and several consumer groups.

The wire transfer, from the federal government, gives Chrysler $6.6 billion in exit financing.
A two-page order from the Supreme Court made it clear that it was not ruling on the merits of the Indiana funds’ case. But the justices wrote that the funds, which represent teachers and police officers, “have not carried the burden” of proving that the Supreme Court needed to intervene.

After more than a month of sometimes dramatic court hearings, Chrysler sold the bulk of its assets to Fiat in almost anticlimactic fashion: in the offices of the Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, the law firm that is advising the Treasury Department’s auto task force. The sale was completed at about 9 a.m.

“This morning’s closing represents a proud moment in Chrysler’s storied history,” a Treasury official said. “The Chrysler-Fiat alliance has now exited the bankruptcy process and is poised to emerge as a competitive, viable automaker.”

The speed with which Chrysler’s restructuring plan swept through the court system was an important victory for the Obama administration, which is seeking to remake the American auto industry after years of declining sales. When Chrysler filed for bankruptcy on April 30, President Obama promised its restructuring would be “efficient” and “controlled.” Company and government officials repeatedly exhorted the courts to approve the restructuring swiftly, citing the $100 million a day that Chrysler was consuming as it idled its plants and paid other overhead costs.

Chrysler was openly acknowledged as a test case for General Motors, a far larger and more complex company only in the early stages of its bankruptcy case.
As envisioned by Chrysler, Fiat and the government, Wednesday’s sale will create a new carmaker freed from old Chrysler’s crushing labor costs and debt levels. It will have gained in Fiat, which will run the company, a partner skilled in making and selling small, fuel-efficient cars around the world.

Under the plan, the carmaker would emerge from bankruptcy with a union retiree trust owning 55 percent, Fiat owning a 20 percent share that could eventually grow to 35 percent, and the United States and Canadian governments holding minority stakes.
But the hardest part for Chrysler begins now. Stung by the recession, Americans have shown relatively little appetite for buying new cars.

Chrysler has been hit hardest among the three Detroit companies by the slump which began last year and which has resulted in the worst sales in more than a quarter century.
Through May, Chrysler sales were down 46.3 percent, and it held just 10 percent of the car and truck market, down from nearly 15 percent a few years ago. It ranks only fifth in the American market, behind G.M., Toyota, Ford and Honda.

Chrysler employees, who were once considered among the industry’s most energetic and innovative, now face the prospect of adjusting to their third set of owners in less than two years. In recent weeks, teams from Fiat have been going over the company’s operations in Auburn Hills, Mich., much as teams from Cerberus Capital Management did in 2007, when the investment group bought the company from DaimlerChrysler.

Likewise, employees can expect new management at Chrysler, much as Cerberus brought in Robert L. Nardelli, the former Home Depot chief executive, and James Press from Toyota’s American operations. Sergio Marchionne, the chief executive of Fiat, has said he would run Chrysler, but he, too, is likely to bring in some managers.

The impact on Chrysler’s lineup will take longer to be felt. Chrysler, more than any other American player, depends heavily on Jeeps, minivans and pickups as the bulk of its lineup, even after gas prices rose above $4 last year. Small Fiats are expected to be sold at Chrysler dealers, such as the Fiat 500, the latest version of the perennial Italian favorite. But it could take months or years to adapt them to emissions and safety requirements in the United States.

For the moment, Chrysler dealers will have to rely on many of the same vehicles sold by Chrysler before it entered bankruptcy. And there will be far fewer of those dealers: hundreds closed Tuesday night, and their cars and trucks will be redistributed among remaining showrooms.

Sotomayor breaks ankle at New York City airport en route to Washington for Senate meetings

Sotomayor limps to Senate visits on broken ankle

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor hobbled through a packed day of meetings on Capitol Hill Monday after breaking her ankle in an early morning airport stumble, then boarding a flight from New York to Washington to visit senators who will vote on her confirmation.

The federal appeals court judge, who has been keeping a busy set of appointments with lawmakers, tripped while rushing for her plane at New York's LaGuardia Airport. The White House said she suffered a small fracture to her right ankle.

Sotomayor made the meetings with senators despite her injury. She entered the Capitol for a meeting with Sen. Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, on crutches, wearing a white cast covered at the foot with a black soft bootie. Asked how she was feeling, Sotomayor said, "I feel fine, thank you."

The injury changed the tone slightly on an otherwise high-intensity round of meetings that are part job interview for Sotomayor, part preview of a pressure-filled set of confirmation hearings.

Sen. Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., signed Sotomayor's cast during their session. Her fellow Louisianan, Republican Sen. David Vitter, had a bag of ice and a pillow on hand when the judge arrived at his office, telling her to "please be seated and relax."

"I hope you all note that some Republicans are empathetic too," Vitter quipped to reporters. It was a humorous reference to President Barack Obama's remark that he wanted a Supreme Court justice with "the quality of empathy" _ a concept that has been roundly criticized by conservatives who counter that personal feelings and experiences have no place in a judge's decisions.

Sotomayor chuckled at the comment. "Oh I'm so grateful. Thank you, sir," she told Vitter.

Still, Vitter emerged from the meeting saying he still had "very serious concerns" about Sotomayor, including her position on the Second Amendment that gives Americans gun rights and her much-discussed comment in a 2001 speech that she hoped a "wise Latina" would usually make better decisions than a white male without that experience.

Vitter said he questioned Sotomayor "at great length" about the remark, which she repeated with almost identical wording in at least two subsequent speeches, and which she had the chance to look over while preparing a written version that later appeared in a journal.

"I think that's very different from an offhand comment which was ill-advised in terms of wording," Vitter said.

The White House, which initially said the "wise Latina" comment was a poor choice of words, scrambled Monday to explain what Sotomayor meant by it.

"If you go back and look at each of the instances, I think the overall theme is that experiences and background matter, and that what we've talked about in 2001 was a poor choice of words," said Robert Gibbs, the White House spokesman. He said he couldn't recall whether he knew the judge had uttered almost precisely the same words on multiple occasions when he said on May 29 that it was a poor word choice. Obama also said at the time that he was "sure she would have restated it."

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh ridiculed Sotomayor on the subject and on her injury during his program Monday, saying, "I hope she can find a wise Latina doctor to set that ankle as opposed to an average white doctor, because the wise Latina doctor has much richer experience with broken ankles, and would probably do a much better job of setting that ankle than an average white doctor who has not lived the rich experiences of a Latina med student."

Sotomayor has set a relentless pace since her Capitol Hill debut last week, meeting with one-third of the Senate in just four days of visits.

The White House is pressing for her quick confirmation, and Sotomayor wasn't pausing much for distractions, even her own trip-up. After her arrival in Washington, she went straight to the White House, where a physician examined her and sent her to a local medical office for an X-ray.

The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates treated and released her, according to a White House statement. She'll likely be limping through most of her confirmation process; Sotomayor said she would be in the hard cast for three weeks and a lighter one for three weeks after that.

Sotomayor drew praise Monday from former first lady Laura Bush, who said she was pleased Obama had nominated a woman for the Supreme Court.

"I think she sounds like a very interesting and good nominee," Bush said of Sotomayor. She said on ABC's "Good Morning America" that, "as a woman, I'm proud that there might be another woman on the court. I wish her well."

U.S. Supreme Court Clears Way for Sale of Chrysler to Fiat

Breaking News Alert

Supreme Court Clears Way for Sale of Chrysler to Fiat
The United States Supreme Court declined Tuesday evening tohear a challenge to the Chrysler bankruptcy settlement, a dayafter Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg had granted a stay in thecase. The ruling was a setback to a group of dissidentbondholders and will clear the way for the sale of Chrysler'skey assets to a group led by Fiat.

P.S.
Fiat S.p.A., an acronym for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino[3] (English: Italian Automobile Factory of Turin), is an Italian automobile manufacturer, engine manufacturer, financial and industrial group based in Turin in the Piedmont region. Fiat was founded in 1899 by a group of investors including Giovanni Agnelli. Fiat has also manufactured tanks and aircraft.
Fiat Group is the largest vehicle manufacturer in Italy, with a range of cars starting from small Fiat city cars to sports cars made by Ferrari, and vans and trucks ranging from the Ducato to Iveco commercial trucks. Besides Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A, the Fiat Group automotive companies include Ferrari S.p.A., Iveco S.p.A. and Maserati S.p.A. The Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A. companies include: Abarth & C. S.p.A., Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A., Fiat Automobiles S.p.A., Fiat Professional and Lancia Automobiles S.p.A.. Ferrari S.p.A. is 85% owned by the Fiat Group, but is run autonomously.
Publishing and communication
Fiat group also owns important editorial brands, like La Stampa (created in 1926 for the famous newspaper), Itedi, and Italiana Edizioni. Some national and local newspapers are owned or otherwise controlled by the different companies. A specialised advertising space reseller is Publikompass, supported by the Consorzio Fiat Media Center.
Fiat is also present in the combat vehicle sector through a consortium between Iveco and OTO Melara, their most notable product being the LAV B1 Centauro.
Potential Takeover of GM Europe
In April and May 2009, the possibility of a take over of GM Europe,
a subsidury of General Motors, was being discussed between the two companies. GM Europe owns Opel/Vauxhall and Saab, and, if the deal is successful, will make Fiat the second largest automobile manufacturer in the world, behind Toyota.
On May 30th, 2009, German officials named [Magna] International, an Austro-Canadian car parts manufacturer, to take over Opel. The Opel/Vauxhall partnership is the largest of GM Europe's operations.[21]
Partnership with Chrysler
On 20 January 2009, Fiat S.p.A. and Chrysler LLC announced that they were going to form a global alliance. Under the terms of the agreement, Fiat would take a 35% stake in Chrysler and gain access to its North American dealer network in exchange for providing Chrysler with the platform to build smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles in the US and reciprocal access to Fiat's global distribution network.[25][26]

The new equity holder would have the option of increasing that to as much as 55%. Fiat, the stronger of the two, would not immediately put cash into Chrysler. Instead it would obtain its stake mainly in exchange for covering the cost of retooling a Chrysler plant to produce one or more Fiat models to be sold in the U.S. Fiat would also provide engine and transmission technology to help Chrysler introduce new, fuel-efficient small cars.
The deal is the latest maneuver by Fiat's chief, Sergio Marchionne, who has pulled the Italian company back from the brink of collapse since taking over in 2004.
...
Fiat would not have to pay any money for its 20% of Chrysler. On June 7, 2009, the Indiana State Police Pension Fund, the Indiana Teacher's Retirement Fund, and the state's Major Moves Construction Fund asked the U.S. Supreme Court to delay the sale of Chrysler to Fiat while they challenge the deal. The funds argued that the sale went against U.S. bankruptcy law because it unlawfully rewarded unsecured creditors ahead of secured creditors.[29]. On June 9, 2009, the Supreme Court lifted the temporary hold, clearing the way for Fiat to acquire Chrysler.[30] See Indiana State Police Pension Trust v. Chrysler for more information.

Sergio Marchionne
Sergio Marchionne (born June 17, 1952 in Chieti, Italy[1]) is a dual nationality Canadian and Italian businessman and has been CEO of the Fiat S.p.A. since June 1, 2004. In January 2006 he was also elected Chairman of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).[2] He is the Chairman of SGS and a member of the Board of Directors of UBS. On February 21, 2008, the same board of directors of UBS appointed Marchionne as non-executive vice chairman.[3]
In 2006, he was nominated to be a ""Cavaliere del Lavoro" by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano.[1]
Marchionne, together with Fiat Group Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, returned Fiat's automobile division (Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A.) to profitability in 2006.[4] Together, they have been widely credited with the turnaround of the group into one of the fastest growing companies in the auto industry.[5]
Marchionne has stated he is on "the list" for one of the limited run of 500 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione.[6]
The son of Concezio Marchionne, a Carabiniere originally from the Abruzzese town of Cugnoli, and Maria Zuccon from Carnizza in Istria, Sergio was born in Chieti, Abruzzo. At age 13, Marchionne and his family emigrated to Toronto, Canada where they had relatives. [7] Consequently, he has dual Canadian and Italian citizenship. He is a barrister and solicitor, and Certified General Accountant. He is also a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.[8] His undergraduate studies were completed at the University of Toronto. He went on to earn his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Windsor in 1980 and his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Osgoode Hall Law School of York University in 1983.[9]
He began his professional career in Canada. From 1983 to 1985 he worked as a chartered accountant and tax specialist for Deloitte & Touche. From 1985 to 1988 he was Group Controller and then Director of Corporate Development at the Lawson Mardon Group in Toronto. In 1989 he moved to Glenex Industries where he worked for two years as Executive Vice President.
...
It is announced that when Chrysler emerges from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, (which is estimated to be in June of 2009), Marchionne will replace Robert Nardelli as the company's CEO. [1]
.
.
.
.
Robert Nardelli
Robert Louis Nardelli (born May 17, 1948, in Old Forge, Pennsylvania) is the chairman and chief executive officer of Chrysler. He had earlier served in a similar capacity at The Home Depot from December 2000 to January 2007. Prior to that, Nardelli had risen to become one of the top four executives at General Electric. CNBC named Nardelli as one of the "Worst American CEOs of All Time".[1]
He attended Rockford Auburn High School in Rockford, Illinois and received his Bachelor of Science in business from Western Illinois University in Macomb, where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Nardelli also earned an MBA from the University of Louisville.
...
Home Depot
Nardelli became CEO of Home Depot in December 2000, despite having no retail experience. Using the Six Sigma management strategy also used at GE, he dramatically overhauled the company and replaced its freewheeling entrepreneurial culture. He changed the decentralized management structure, by eliminating and consolidating division executives. He also installed processes and streamlined operations, most notably implementing a computerized automated inventory system and centralizing supply orders at the Atlanta headquarters.
Nardelli was credited with doubling the sales of the chain and improving its competitive position. Revenue increased from $40.57 billion in 2000 to $85.15 billion in 2005, while profit rose from $12.6 billion to $25.8 billion. While this was a slower rate of growth than Home Depot had previously experienced (the company doubled in size every 4 years from 1979 to 2001), it must be noted that the high growth rates were largely due to rapid expansion.[citation needed] As the company was reaching its retail limit in the U.S., Nardelli was brought in to shepherd its transition into a mature business.[citation needed]
Some have criticized him for not maintaining the growth that the company had previously experienced, pointing to his huge salary as a sign that he was actually supposed to bring innovation to the company in order to help it maintain its historical growth. During Nardelli's tenure, Home Depot stock was essentially steady while competitor Lowe's stock doubled, which along with his $240 million compensation eventually earned the ire of investors.[2] His blunt, critical and autocratic management style turned off employees and the public. While the board strongly stood by him for most of his tenure, questions about his leadership mounted in 2006, and in an ominous portent of the near future, he was the only director present at the annual meeting; he only allowed shareholders to speak for a minute each.[3] When the board reportedly ousted him in January 2007,[4] Nardelli's severance package was estimated at $210 million. He was succeeded by The Home Depot vice chairman and executive vice president, Frank Blake. Blake had served as Nardelli's deputy at both GE Power Systems and Home Depot.
During his tenure at Home Depot, Nardelli met President George W. Bush at the White House in 2002 and was appointed to Bush's Council on Service and Civic Participation (although he is no longer a member).[5] Nardelli also hosted a garden reception/fundraiser for Bush at his Atlanta home on May 20, 2004[6]

Coca-Cola
While CEO of Home Depot, Nardelli was also briefly on the Board of Directors for Coca-Cola, starting in 2001.
Chrysler
On August 5, 2007, he became chairman and CEO of the newly privatized Chrysler. His current annual salary at Chrysler is $1, with other compensation not publicly disclosed.[7]
On February 17, 2008, before his first Daytona 500 race as Chrysler CEO, Nardelli guaranteed that Dodge would win the race for the first time since 2002, and that he would award a $1 million bonus to the Dodge team that did it. Ryan Newman, the driver of the #12 Alltel Dodge, fulfilled this promise, and his car owner Roger Penske collected the $1 million bounty.[8]
On December 4, 2008, in an appearance on CNN's Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, when asked "So what do you say about the argument that the Japanese, the Germans, Koreans make better cars than the Americans?" Nardelli responded, "We spent about half a billion dollars in the first several months. Our warranty costs are down 29%. It's an interesting comparison because in the hearing today, going around the panel, the majority of the Senators said that citing specific vehicles that they own that they've got 60, 70, 80,000 miles. The comment was you guys are making them too good and therefore, we're not buying vehicles and we're contributing to your problem. That was from the Senators on the committee today. On April 30, 2009 Bob Nardelli announced that he would leave the company as soon as the bankruptcy was over."[9]
On March 17, 2009, Nardelli said that Chrysler Financial would require a second round of loans.[10] On April 21, 2009, it was revealed that a $750 million loan from the government was turned down, on the grounds that it would have required that executive compensation be capped.[11] On April 30, 2009, Chrysler filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and it was announced that Nardelli's replacement (Sergio Marchionne [12]) would likely face a pay cap.[13]

Jesuit Justice Conference 2009

Transforming The World and Being Transformed

Nine years ago, the Rev. Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., then secretary general of the Society of Jesus, charged the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the U.S. with making a priority of their response to justice issues around the world. Accordingly, a permanent National Committee on Justice in Jesuit Higher Education was created. The group is committed to meeting every few years; this year, the Commitment to Justice in Jesuit Higher Education 2009 meeting will take place on the Fairfield campus from June 18 to 21. The entire campus is reserved for the duration of the event, and sessions will be held in various locations on campus.

"This year's meeting will be particularly meaningful because we'll have representatives from several South and Central American colleges, who will present the issues from their perspective," said Dr. Winston Tellis, who represents Fairfield University on the National Volunteering Committee for the 2009 conference.

Keynote speakers for the conference include British Robinson, director of public/private partnerships in the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator at the State Dept.; the Rev. Charles Onyango Oduke, S.J., assistant professor of philosophy at Boston College; and the Rev. Richard Ryscavage, S.J., director of the Center for Faith and Public Life at Fairfield.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend all or part of the conference at a reduced attendee rate of $50 per day, which covers registration, conference materials, and lunch. A registration form for Fairfield personnel will be distributed via e-mail shortly.

No rushing a good vegan restaurant

Owners Nira Minniefield (left) and Eshe Armah stand in front of their soon-to-be-opened Natural Life Café on South Arlington Street.

MARIA ZILBERMAN
Daily Record Business Writer
June 8, 2009 7:59 PM

The café was scheduled to open last week, but the owners postponed the debut so they could finish acquiring the necessary building permits, a process that might have gone faster had they chosen to take out loans, Armah said. They hope to be open within a month, she said.

However, the self-described “eco-entrepreneur moms” have opted to follow what they call their “lunch money plan,” squeezing any spare money they have into the project and calling on friends and family when they need help with manual labor, such as laying tile and grout work.

So far, they have invested $10,000 into the project, a number that could double before the restaurant is fully operating, Armah said.

“We’re totally doing this grassroots. We have events and cater
events when we have higher expenses,” she said.

Minniefield also continues to work full-time as a computer engineer with Allegis Group in Hanover.

The restaurant is an outgrowth of Lunch by Nature Inc., a catering service started seven years ago by Minniefield when she became disturbed by the amount of fried food pumped at children by school cafeterias.

A mother of three, she had some success catering, but has not reached her long-term goal of taking over as a school lunch provider.

Now, the goal is becoming more attainable because the café will house the commercial grade kitchen necessary to do school catering, Minniefield said.

“We want to be open for the start of the school year because we want to start courting principals and letting them know we offer school services,” she said.

Though the restaurant owners do not have a background in food, both are family cooks and have an equally important resource available to them: their children, who serve as taste testers.

“Kids are our target customers, and we’re just bringing their parents along for the ride,” Minniefield said.

The Natural Life Café began publicity efforts on May 24, selling their signature apple lemonade, Omni and Herbi sandwiches, and grilled corn on the cob, at the Sowebohemian Arts Festival, an annual festival in the Hollins Market neighborhood.

Darren Brown, co-owner of Sweet Tooth Dessert Shop on Hollins Street, said he expects the café to fill a lunch-time void in the area, which lacks a healthy food venue, he said. The Bistro, the restaurant that used to be in Natural Life’s space, was also a locally owned business.

“The good thing is that I know people enjoyed having a nice little neighborhood restaurant like that,” he said.

Though they have concerns about opening a restaurant in a tough economy, the pair said they are confident they are filling a need in the Hollins Park neighborhood and are thinking of ways to make their food affordable to as many people as possible, such as through a dollar menu, they said.

The restaurant’s mission extends past providing healthy food that children like. The owners are seeking out environmentally and socially conscious suppliers, such as Vanguard Ranch in Gordsonville, Va., which will be the café’s source of produce. They are also planning to host rejuvenation retreats, a series of outdoor day or weekend trips for families.

“It’s about building relationships among human beings and being good to one another,” said Minniefield, echoing the restaurant’s motto, “Real food changes people.”

While the cost of opening a restaurant can vary drastically, the passion behind Natural Life is also necessary for its survival, said Paul Hartgen, president and CEO of the Restaurant Association of Maryland.

“If they made the choice to open a business now, they’re probably looking at everything with a much different set of lenses than someone who opened five years ago,” said Hartgen, who emphasized the importance of cautiously deciding how money is allocated.

The restaurant will be open for breakfast and lunch and will serve wraps, soups and salads ranging from $3.50 to $7. It will feature indoor seating for 20, as well as outdoor seating once permits are acquired.

and the Holy Spirit will speak through the living, human agent, with convincing power. No one then will watch to see if the sentences are well rounded off, if the grammar is faultless. The living water will flow in God's own channels. {2SM 58.4}

But let us be careful now not to exalt men, their sayings, and doings; and let not anyone consider it a grand point to have a startling experience to relate; for here is a fruitful field where credence will be given to unworthy persons. Young men and women will be lifted up, and will regard themselves as wonderfully favored, called to do some great thing. There will be conversions many, after a peculiar order, but they will not bear the divine signature. Immorality will come in, and extravagance, and many will make shipwreck of faith. {2SM 59.1}

Our only safety is in keeping fast hold of Jesus. Never are we to lose sight of Him. He says, "Without me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). We must cultivate an abiding sense of our own inefficiency and helplessness and rely wholly on Jesus. This should keep us individually calm and steadfast in words and deportment. Excitement in the speaker is not power but weakness. Earnestness and energy are essential in presenting Bible truth, the gospel, which is the power of God unto salvation.... {2SM 59.2}

There are quicksands upon which many are in danger of being swamped. It is always safe to seek for the earnest of the Spirit of God, if we do not mingle with it a force and presumption that is not heaven born. There is need of caution in all our utterances lest some poor souls of ardent temperament shall work themselves up into a zeal not according to knowledge. They will act as though it was their prerogative to use the Holy Spirit instead of letting the Holy Spirit use them, and mold and fashion them after the pattern of the divine. There is danger of running ahead of Christ. We should honor the Holy Spirit by following where it shall lead. "Lean not unto thine own understanding" (Prov. 3:5). This is one danger of those who teach the truth to others. To follow where
60
Christ leads is a safe path for our feet. His work will stand. Whatsoever God saith is truth. {2SM 59.3}

But ministers who bear the last message of mercy to fallen men must utter no random works; they must not open doors whereby Satan shall find access to human minds. It is not our work to experiment, to study out something new and startling that will create excitement. Satan is watching his chance to take advantage of anything of this order that he may bring in his deceiving elements. The Holy Spirit's moving upon the human agents will keep the mind well balanced. There will not be a wrought-up excitement, to be followed by reaction. {2SM 60.1}

Satan will make use of every extravagant expression to the injury, not only of the speaker, but of those who shall catch the same spirit and infuse others to their harm. Calmness and solemnity should be cultivated; the solemn truths we dwell upon will lead us to manifest deep earnestness. How can we do otherwise when weighted with the most sacred message to bear to perishing souls-- weighted by the sense of the nearness of our Saviour's coming. {2SM 60.2}

If we are constantly looking unto Jesus and receiving His Spirit, we shall have clear eyesight. Then we shall discern the perils on every side, and shall guard every word we utter, lest Satan find opportunity to weave in his deceptions. We do not want to have the minds of the people wrought up into an excitement. We should not encourage an expectation to see strange and wonderful things. But teach them to follow Jesus step by step. Preach Jesus Christ, in whom our hope of eternal life is centered.--Letter 102, 1894.

Herod had John the Baptist Beheaded

14And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

15Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.

16But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

17For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her.

18For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

19Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

20For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

21And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee;

22And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

23And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

24And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

25And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.

26And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.

27And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

28And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.

29And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

Chomsky: What Obama Didn't Say in His Cairo Address Speaks Volumes About His Mideast Policy

Chomsky: What Obama Didn't Say in His Cairo Address Speaks Volumes About His Mideast Policy

The U.S. has played a decisive role in sustaining the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Obama gave no indication that its role should change.

A CNN headline, reporting Obama's plans for his June 4 address in Cairo, Egypt, reads "Obama looks to reach the soul of the Muslim world." Perhaps that captures his intent, but more significant is the content hidden in the rhetorical stance, or more accurately, omitted.

Keeping just to Israel-Palestine -- there was nothing substantive about anything else -- Obama called on Arabs and Israelis not to "point fingers" at each other or to "see this conflict only from one side or the other."

There is, however, a third side, that of the United States, which has played a decisive role in sustaining the current conflict. Obama gave no indication that its role should change or even be considered.

Those familiar with the history will rationally conclude, then, that Obama will continue in the path of unilateral U.S. rejectionism.

Obama once again praised the Arab Peace Initiative, saying only that Arabs should see it as "an important beginning, but not the end of their responsibilities." How should the Obama administration see it?

Obama and his advisers are surely aware that the initiative reiterates the longstanding international consensus calling for a two-state settlement on the international (pre-June 1967) border, perhaps with "minor and mutual modifications," to borrow U.S. government usage before it departed sharply from world opinion in the 1970s. That's when the U.S. vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution backed by the Arab "confrontation states" (Egypt, Iran, Syria), and tacitly by the PLO, with the same essential content as the Arab Peace Initiative, except that the latter goes beyond by calling on Arab states to normalize relations with Israel in the context of this political deal.

Obama has called on the Arab states to proceed with normalization, studiously ignoring, however, the crucial political settlement that is its precondition. The initiative cannot be a "beginning" if the U.S. continues to refuse to accept its core principles, even to acknowledge them.

In the background is the Obama administration's goal, enunciated most clearly by Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to forge an alliance of Israel and the "moderate" Arab states against Iran. The term "moderate" has nothing to do with the character of the state, but rather signals its willingness to conform to U.S. demands.

What is Israel to do in return for Arab steps to normalize relations? The strongest position so far enunciated by the Obama administration is that Israel should conform to Phase I of the 2003 Road Map, which states: "Israel freezes all settlement activity (including natural growth of settlements)." All sides claim to accept the Road Map, overlooking the fact that Israel instantly added 14 reservations that render it inoperable.

Overlooked in the debate over settlements is that even if Israel were to accept Phase I of the Road Map, that would leave in place the entire settlement project that has already been developed, with decisive U.S. support, to ensure that Israel will take over the valuable land within the illegal "separation wall" (including the primary water supplies of the region), as well as the Jordan Valley, thus imprisoning what is left, which is being broken up into cantons by settlement/infrastructure salients extending far to the east.

Unmentioned as well is that Israel is taking over Greater Jerusalem, the site of its major current development programs, displacing many Arabs, so that what remains to Palestinians will be separated from the center of their cultural, economic and sociopolitical life.

Also unmentioned is that all of this is in violation of international law, as conceded by the government of Israel after the 1967 conquest, and reaffirmed by Security Council resolutions and the International Court of Justice. Also unmentioned are Israel's successful operations since 1991 to separate the West Bank from Gaza, since turned into a prison where survival is barely possible, further undermining the hopes for a viable Palestinian state.

It is worth remembering that there has been one break in U.S.-Israeli rejectionism. President Clinton recognized that the terms he had offered at the failed 2000 Camp David meetings were not acceptable to any Palestinians, and in December, proposed his "parameters," vague but more forthcoming. He then announced that both sides had accepted the parameters, although both had reservations.

Israeli and Palestinian negotiators met in Taba, Egypt, to iron out the differences, and made considerable progress. A full resolution could have been reached in a few more days, they announced in their final joint press conference. But Israel called off the negotiations prematurely, and they have not been formally resumed. The single exception indicates that if an American president is willing to tolerate a meaningful diplomatic settlement, it can very likely be reached.

It is also worth remembering that the George W. Bush administration went a bit beyond words in objecting to illegal Israeli settlement projects, namely, by withholding U.S. economic support for them. In contrast, Obama administration officials stated that such measures are "not under discussion," and that any pressures on Israel to conform to the Road Map will be "largely symbolic," the New York Times reported (Helene Cooper, June 1).

There is more to say, but it does not relieve the grim picture that Obama has been painting, with a few extra touches in his widely heralded address to the Muslim World in Cairo on June 4.

For when they shall say, Peace and safety,..

1 Thessalonians 5

1But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

2For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

3For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

4But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

7For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

8But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

9For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

10Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

11Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

12And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

13And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

14Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

15See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

16Rejoice evermore.

17Pray without ceasing.

18In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

19Quench not the Spirit.

20Despise not prophesyings.

21Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

22Abstain from all appearance of evil.

23And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

25Brethren, pray for us.

26Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

27I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.

28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Buy Gold! Buy Gold!

Invest in Gold!

The Financial Experts are advising their clients, or anyone that will listen to their voices to buy Gold. They claim it's the best safeguard for the impeding financial collapse that is just around the corner. The Gold dealers are trying to convince everyone that if you have Gold you won't suffer any losses when the pendulum finally stops swinging. The Gold dealers are the latest group to add (advise) disinformation to the already existing state of confusion. Gold will not help anyone when the world's currencies are no longer accepted for payment or services. When people stop pretending (refuse to believe) that the pretty paper has real value.

17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Revelation 3:17-19

This suggestion from Jesus is for those that rely on their earthly riches to cover for their inherent mere human shortcomings; Many who are professed Christians awaiting "His" return and "His" salvation. But, it also applies to all (believers, atheists, or pagans) those materialists that think that they can line their coffers with Gold for a rainy day, and ensure that they will not be deprived of goods and services if the modus vivendi were to change drastically.

Here are a few more scripture readings that warn against trusting in gold or riches:

19And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

20In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;

21To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

Isaiah 2:19-21

The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.

Psalm 135:15

My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.

Proverbs 8:19

18They shall also gird themselves with sackcloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads.

19They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

20As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty: but they made the images of their abominations and of their detestable things therein: therefore have I set it far from them.

Ezekiel 7:18-20

3Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him.

4They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.

5Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency?

Hosea 8:3-5

17And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.

18Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD's wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

Zephaniah 1:17-18

7And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.

8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

9The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

Haggai 2:7-9

Jesus instructed "His" Disciples thus:

8Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

9Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,

10Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.

Matthew 10:8-10

The Apostle James states:

2Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

3Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

4Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.

James 5:2-4

Jesus and The Rich Young Ruler:

20And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

21Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

22And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

Mark 10:20-22

This is what the Lord Jesus wills that we do from now on, and today on "His" Sabbath day, dear brethren:

19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

P.S. In 1987, when I worked on Maiden Lane in the financial district of Manhattan;
On two occasions while returning from Broadway, I came upon an armored truck outside the N.Y. Federal Reserve, and once accross the street in front of Chase Plaza loading (or unloading) pallets of gold bars. There were several armed guards with weapons drawn around the trucks, while some guards stacked gold bars on pallets. I was startled and amazed by the awesome sight, yet, I kept walking. This was in the Spring and Summer of 1987, several months before the October crash of the N.Y. Stock Market.

.
Gold bars without the assurance of God's acceptance are no better than an iron anchor. You will sink with one, and be saved with the other. Strive to do "His" will today!

The Devil's Strategy Against Sabbathkeepers

Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law? They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood. Ps. 94:20, 21.

As the people of God approach the perils of the last days, Satan holds earnest consultation with his angels as to the most successful plan of overthrowing their faith.... {Mar 163.1}

Says the great deceiver: "... The Sabbath is the great question which is to decide the destiny of souls. We must exalt the sabbath of our creating. We have caused it to be accepted by both worldlings and church members; now the church must be led to unite with the world in its support. We must work by signs and wonders to blind their eyes to the truth, and lead them to lay aside reason and the fear of God and follow custom and tradition. {Mar 163.2}

"I will influence popular ministers to turn the attention of their hearers from the commandments of God.... {Mar 163.3}

"But our principal concern is to silence this sect of Sabbathkeepers. We must excite popular indignation against them. We will enlist great men and worldly-wise men upon our side, and induce those in authority to carry out our purposes. Then the sabbath which I have set up shall be enforced by laws the most severe and exacting. Those who disregard them shall be driven out from the cities and villages, and made to suffer hunger and privation. When once we have the power, we will show what we can do with those who will not swerve from their allegiance to God. . . . Now that we are bringing the Protestant churches and the world into harmony with this right arm of our strength, we will finally have a law to exterminate all who will not submit to our authority. When death shall be made the penalty of violating our sabbath, then many who are now ranked with commandment keepers will come over to our side. {Mar 163.4}

"But before proceeding to these extreme measures, we must . . . ensnare those who honor the true Sabbath. We can separate many from Christ by worldliness, lust, and pride. They may think themselves safe because they believe the truth, but indulgence of appetite or the lower passions, which will confuse judgment and destroy discrimination, will cause their fall." {Mar 163.5}

And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob

Isaiah 65

1I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.

2I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;

3A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick;

4Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine's flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;

5Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.

6Behold, it is written before me: I will not keep silence, but will recompense, even recompense into their bosom,

7Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bosom.

8Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants' sakes, that I may not destroy them all.

9And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains: and mine elect shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there.

10And Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, and the valley of Achor a place for the herds to lie down in, for my people that have sought me.

11But ye are they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number.

12Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not.

13Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed:

14Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit.

15And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord GOD shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name:

16That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes.

17For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

18But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.

19And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.

20There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.

21And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.

22They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.

23They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.

24And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.

25The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.
