With the USGS confirming that the earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday was 7.0 in magnitude, the scale of the devastation in the Caribbean nation begins to make sense. While details were scarce on Wednesday, in the last 48 hours, numerous reports and images have begun to emerge from the region. In addition to on-scene reporting, satellite images were also made available to search&rescue teams in Haiti and abroad. Already, emergency response teams are at the location in the poor nation, and others as far as Taiwan are getting ready to move there too, or are already en route.

Venezuela, Great Britain, Taiwan, the United States, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Cuba have already sent teams in Haiti, and some of the groups have already reached the theater of operations and are conducting relief efforts. The United States have sent an aircraft carrier and a bunch of other support vessels in the region, as well as a contingent of more than 2,000 soldiers. It is still unclear if they are to secure peace, or to help with the relief efforts, but Obama said shortly after the tremor that Haiti would benefit from the fullest cooperation and support on the part of the US.

The Brazilian Army, which also intervened, set up camps of tents and started providing emergency medical assistance to the victims. The field hospitals that Cuba had in the country were overrun with injured people since the first hours after the earthquake struck.

In spite of being under international embargo, Cuba has hospitals in many countries around the world, in which it provides medical assistance for the poor. Regardless of the efforts set forth by these countries and Haitian authorities, the situation is growing desperate, on account of the tens of thousands of people that were injured or killed in the shallow tremor.

UNICEF has also begun relief efforts aimed at the children of Haiti. Of the 9.6 million inhabitants that the Caribbean nation has, more than half are below the age of 21. The UN agency has dispatched teams from its New York, Panama and Dominican Republic centers, to aid with the relief efforts, and to deliver medication to the affected people.

Some of the most basic supplies include oral rehydration salts (that prevent diarrhea), water-purification tablets, and tarpaulins / tents, for temporal housing. The Venezuelan response team has also brought in numerous medical equipments, and the Los Angeles team, which is due to arrive shortly, also carries with it impressive amounts of supplies.

Satellites have done their part as well. The GeoEye 1 Earth-observing spacecraft has captured, on Wednesday, its first images of the affected areas. The large scale of the devastation could be seen for the first time from low-Earth orbit. The new datasets help experts devise rescue plans, and also map the areas that are most likely to have many victims. This, in turn, helps them prioritize their efforts, and makes their work a lot more efficient. In addition, the new maps are compared with old ones of the same locations, and then experts identify the hardest hit areas. More supplies can then be redirected to those locations, where people need them more.

Looters roam Haiti streets as US troops pour in

Machete-wielding looters brought more terror to Haiti's streets Friday as US troops poured into the quake-ravaged nation to start streaming tons of aid to traumatized and destitute people.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, January 16, 2010 (AFP) - Machete-wielding looters brought more terror to Haiti's streets Friday as US troops poured into the quake-ravaged nation to start streaming tons of aid to traumatized and destitute people.

Three days after Tuesday's earthquake, anger and frustration mounted in the ruined capital city, with thousands of people still desperate for food and water amid the stench of corpses left rotting in the tropical sun.

A vanguard of the 10,000 US troops being deployed to Haiti took control of the airport, clogged with tons of relief supplies, and began the first mass distributions of aid seeking to quell any threat of violence.

"As long as the people are hungry and thirsty, as long as we haven't fixed the problem of shelter, we run the risk of riots," warned Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim, after a visit to the capital Port-au-Prince.

Haitian officials said at least 50,000 people had been killed and 1.5 million left homeless in the Caribbean nation, one of the poorest countries in the world, which has long witnessed violence and bloodshed.

As UN officials on the ground pleaded for more medical and food aid for survivors, looting became widespread and there were angry scuffles at the few distribution points.

The fourth night after the quake brought fresh fears for many families already terrorized by armed gangs.

"Men suddenly appeared with machetes to steal money," said Evelyne Buino, a young beautician, after a long night in a neighborhood not far from the ruined city center.

"This is just the beginning."

"We need to protect and guard (our home). There are many armed men, a lot of looting," Eglide Victor, whose shabbily-built house was the only one left standing on his street in the heart of the Haitian capital, told AFP.

Officials have estimated that some three million people -- a third of the population -- were affected by the 7.0-magnitude quake.

"We really need to focus on the living, and what we can do for them," Nicholas Reader, spokesman for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told AFP.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon is set to visit Haiti on Sunday as the world body appealed for 562 million dollars from donors. Ban said the UN system was mobilizing all its resources "as fast as we possibly can."

The UN mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) was hit hard by the quake, with 37 of its 12,000 employees confirmed dead and 330 unaccounted for.

UN officials said the World Food Programme was now feeding around 8,000 people several times a day and hopes to feed roughly one million people within 15 days and two million people within a month.

"People had reserves for a few days, but now they are dwindling. They are afraid to go downtown in search of food because it has become too dangerous," said Haiti resident Patricia Etique, a Swiss citizen.

With thousands of bodies piled up on the streets of the capital, there was also a race against time to reach any survivors still in the ruins and treat those who were badly injured.

Foreign relief teams were increasingly seen on the streets, some backed by vital heavy-lifting equipment.

Scores more survivors were pulled alive from the rubble. A Belgian rescue team extracted a 28-year-old Haitian woman from one building after first amputating her leg above her right knee.

"We're very happy. It's what we're here for, and after this amount of time and the heat, it's great to still find people alive," Sergeant Major Edouard Dekoster, part of a specialized search and rescue team, told AFP.

US President Barack Obama finally reached Haiti's President Rene Preval by telephone Friday, and offered "full support" in earthquake relief aid and long-term rebuilding.

But President Preval told AFP that the aid operation needs to be better organized.

"We need international aid, but the problem is the coordination," he said.

Preval, whose temporary seat of government is now a police station near the capital's airport, said 74 planes from countries including the United States, France and Venezuela, had arrived in a single day.

Scientists warned that Haiti and its neighbors must prepare themselves for more massive quakes after the devastating tremors this week increased pressure along a lengthy fault line.

Paul Mann, a senior research scientist at the Institute for Geophysics at the University of Texas at Austin, warned that just because the rebuilding process had started people shouldn't assume the risk was over.

"This relief of stress along this area near Port-au-Prince may have actually increased stress in the adjacent segments on the fault," he told AFP.

Venezuela and Oklahoma Earthquakes Come on Heels of Earthquake in Haiti
January 16, 2010 12:49 AM EST (Updated: January 16, 2010 12:49 AM EST)

Earthquakes in Venezuela and Oklahoma came right on the heels of the earthquake in Haiti. The Venezuelan earthquake measured 5.6 on the Richter Scale. According to NPR, the earthquake hit near the coastal town of Carupano which is only about 800 miles from Port-au-Prince. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that the epicenter of the quake was about 235 miles east of Caracas. Venezuela lies on the same Caribbean tectonic plat as Haiti. Power outages have been reported, but, amazingly, there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

Meanwhile, near Oklahoma City, a 4.0 earthquake was measured on Friday morning. The quake was centered in Jones City, about 17 miles from Oklahoma City. Earthquakes are considered rare for Oklahoma but this is actually the third earthquake to strike the same region this week. Geologist say that any quake below 5.0 on the Richter scale is considered a small earthquake and will do minor damage.

AIM Column on Pope Sparks Controversy

Press Release January 13, 2010

AIM editor Cliff Kincaid's column, "Pope Continues Global "Green" Crusade for World Government," has generated a lot of reaction. Cliff discussed the column during an appearance on G. Gordon Liddy's national radio program. Cliff and Gordon are both Catholics and discussed the roles being played by the Vatican and the U.S. Catholic Bishops in such matters as climate change legislation, health care, and amnesty for illegal aliens. You can listen to the interview here. These are some of the comments we received in response to Cliff's column:

  • You have been writing some great articles on the Vatican's socialist and environmentalist agenda. The papacy wields so much power that it is sheer suicide for those who truly care about liberty to ignore the influence and agenda of the Vatican. I suppose you also know the role the Catholic Bishops have been playing in promoting illegal immigration across our southern borderas well aslobbying for amnesty, drivers licenses, scholarships etc.for illegals. But again, thank you for being bold to tell the truth about the pope's political agenda.

  • Thank you Cliff, another good article. I wonder if anyone else will enter the subject.

  • Please take me off your distribution list. The treatment of the Holy Father in the article is demeaning and offensive to traditional, conservative Catholics, like me. I am not troubled nor embarrassed by my church but am very proud of it and this Pope.

  • I am a 'traditional' Catholic and attend Mass at an SSPX chapel. It's scandalous that so-called Popes, who have deliberately undermined Catholicism as well as liberty for decades, now feel no compunction about ushering in the age of the anti-Christ, as described in Revelation. Nominally, the Pope is the leader of the Catholic Church. In reality, he is becoming irrelevant to the majority of Catholics. It is a predictable result of meddling in politics and refusing to exercise any moral guidance, his only legitimate function.

  • The pope does exactly what scripture says; namely reviving the 3rd Roman Empire. It will be the last one; and if you continue to read scripture, you will see that once again, the Roman Catholic Church and Europe will attack Israel. I was wondering when this would come about; I guess I don't have to wait anymore. Surely, the resurrected Roman Empire will be part of the UN, which is called 'the beast' in the Bible. Nothing surprises me anymore."

  • Being a Catholic, I believe the Pope looks at the world not through a political eye. He sees United Nations as the way the world should be, united and at peace with each other, protecting each other. He sees man's faults (and sinfulness) and how man can destroy himself and the creation around him. You and I know that the United Nations is corrupt and not to be trusted and that global warming is a hoax. I think we have to examine the lens we look through.

  • As a traditional Catholic it is my opinion that the pope should be calling for the investigation and prosecution of all who are responsible for the fraud called 'global warming.' All who are indicted for this fraud should be tried for 'CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY.'Population control, confiscation and redistribution of wealth, destruction of sovereignties around the world, oppressive laws established to control humanity and out and out tyranny against ALL OF MANKIND. They have squandered billions of dollars in their fraud on research in global warming -- money that could have been well spent in feeding the poor. These people need to be brought to justice, exposed and convicted for their crimes against mankind. In my opinion the pope must be sipping too much of the altar wine or he is now favorable to the teachings of Freemasonry, which the REAL Roman Catholic Church and its popes always opposed.

  • Someone needs to clue in the pope that man-made global warming is a hoax and conspiracy as proven by the whistleblower email scandal.Climate is mostly due to sunspot activity (i.e., God). The Pope would be better off by railing against corrupt governments and money wasted on global warming and not used to help the needy, hungry, etc.

  • I don't believe this; as if those of us who are "foot soldiers in the anti-New World Order army" don't have a big enough challenge as it is, now we have to deal with this same neo-Marxist, anti-civilization, anti-progress twaddle coming from the Church of all places!! This to me sounds like Ratzinger is using his Papacy to shill for eco-fascist, globalist, and international leftist pet causes when he should be concerning himself with Church matters. When he speaks of the "cultural and moral problems" that exist in the world, as the leader of the Catholic Church he of all people should know perfectly well that those problems exist because of the fallen nature of the imperfect human race, and the solution to those issues is not to be found in the empowerment of any kind of global tyranny, whether it be the Dis-United Nations or anything else.

  • Ever since Constantine, the church has been political. Why are we surprised that the pope would support a globalist scam?Of course, there is always the possibility that he thinks AGW [anthropogenic global warming] is true.

God’s people are not preparing for the spiritual struggle that is about to take place

Turn with me in your bibles to the book of first Thessalonians, chapter 5. This chapter tells us something about what is going on in our world right now. It reveals the attitude of most people, whether religious or not, to the sweeping events taking place around us. They don’t know that a great terror is coming upon them, and a great destruction. They think that they are safe because they are protected by the government, or because they go to church every week. They think they will be protected just because they claim the name of Christ. But this is not true. The protection of God only comes when we have Jesus in our hearts, and when He lives our lives for us, overcoming the devil on every point, the consequences be what they may. It requires our cooperation and surrender to His will moment by moment. While God’s church slumbers on; while many of His people watch their bank accounts, their TVs and DVDs, listen to their worldly music, and eat their chicken, fish and who knows what else, the world is marching steadily on toward destruction. (They aren't watching the current events.)* The vengeance of God is about to be poured out, and God’s people are not preparing for the spiritual struggle that is about to take place.

In the 8th volume of Testimonies for the Church page 315 we read, “A storm is coming, relentless in its fury.” Then in the third volume of Selected Messages page 389 we read, “The people must not be left to stumble their way along in darkness, not knowing what is before them, and unprepared for the great issues that are coming.” Tragically, even most of those who claim to be God’s people don’t realize what terrible things are coming upon the world.

I will begin reading the first verse of 1 Thess. 5. “But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, or of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.”

Jesus Defends "His" Church

And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves...........Matthew 21:13

Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people............Isaiah 56:7

Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD..........Jeremiah 7:11

*
What and who is His Church?
.
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it..,,,,,,,Matthew 16:18.
.
Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.......Matthew 18:19-20
...
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body............Ephesians 5:23
.
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence....Colossians 1:18

The voice of the true watchman needs now to be heard all along the line, "The morning cometh, and also the night" (Isa. 21:12). The trumpet must give a certain sound for we are in the great day of the Lord's preparation. . . . There are many doctrines current in our world. There is many a religion current that numbers its thousands and tens of thousands, but there is but one that bears the superscription and the stamp of God. There is a religion of man and a religion of God. We must have our souls riveted to the eternal Rock. Everything in God's world, both men and doctrines and nature itself, is fulfilling God's sure word of prophecy and accomplishing His grand and closing work in this world's history. {2SM 379.3}

We are to be ready and waiting for the orders of God. Nations will be stirred to their very center. Support will be withdrawn from those who proclaim God's only standard of righteousness, the only sure test of character. And all who will not bow to the decree of the national councils and obey the national laws to exalt the sabbath instituted by the man of sin, to the disregard of God's holy day, will feel, not the oppressive power of popery alone, but of the Protestant world, the image of the beast. {2SM 380.1}

Satan will work his miracles to deceive; he will set up his power as supreme. The church may appear as about to fall, but it does not fall. It remains, while the sinners in Zion will be sifted out--the chaff separated from the precious wheat. This is a terrible ordeal, but nevertheless it must take place. None but those who have been overcoming by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony will be found with the loyal and true, without spot or stain of sin, without guile in their mouths. We must be divested of our self-righteousness and arrayed in the righteousness of Christ. {2SM 380.2}

Of those who boast of their light and yet fail to walk in it Christ says, "But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment than for you. And thou, Capernaum [Seventh-day Adventists, who have had great light], which art exalted unto heaven [in point of privilege], shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day."--RH Aug. 1, 1893. [THE BRACKETED COMMENTS ARE BY ELLEN WHITE.] {LDE 48.2} *(Matthew 11:23).

*
Conclusion:

23For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

30And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. ................Acts 17:23-31.

"Overhaul" Health Insurance: I am not buying it!

I care not what back-room deals the democrats in the senate and the house of representatives(reprehension) reach with president Obama.

I care not what authoritarian legislation the newfangled-Orwellian (Fabians) idealists conjure up; I will not buy their compulsory health care insurance, or pay the fine for lacking it. I will not participate in their human cattle round-up a.k.a. health care overhaul.

I volunteered once; you won't have me doing it again. No more guinea pigs.

This mandatory, collective approach is not constitutional!

Just for the record...

Standing on the Promises

Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

Refrain

Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

Refrain

Standing on the promises I now can see
Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.

Refrain

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.

Refrain

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
Listening every moment to the Spirit’s call
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.

If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you

John 15

1I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

2Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

3Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

5I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

6If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

8Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

9As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

11These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

17These things I command you, that ye love one another.

18If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

20Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

21But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

22If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

23He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

24If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

25But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

26But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

27And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

...But Whatever you do, "Make a Liberal Donation"

Come out of Babylon (Revelation 18 Angel) vs. Come into Babylon (Jesuit Leadership in Adventist HQ) / But Whatever you do, "Make a Liberal Donation"

For years, the Adventist Church has been building bridges to Babylon. Now the pope of Rome wants to make use of the bridges. Adventist religious liberty boss Bussey thinks the solution is to make a liberal financial donation, since the new pope needs a gold medal. But dismantle those bridges? None of the Jesuits in leadership are suggesting that!

ADVENTIST MISSION - LIMITED FOCUS

"The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, as articulated in the church's mission statement, is to proclaim to all people the everlasting gospel in the context of the Three Angels' messages of Revelation 14:6-12." (Mission and Service, Seventh-day Adventist Church, http://www.adventist.org/mission_and_service/index.html.en

THE ANGELS' MESSAGE

[6] And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
[7] Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
[8] And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
[9] And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
[10] The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: Revelation 14

AND THAT USED TO BE THE ADVENTIST MESSAGE

And for many years, this was the proclamation. As recently as 2009, a student evangelist at Southern Adventist University dared to preach the first angel's message. He boldly proclaimed the soon coming of Christ. And the Adventist university officials encouraged him?

BUT TIMES HAVE CHANGED

No, this is 2009. The Adventist university called in special forces, and had the evangelist beaten, choked, and tasered -- while he was preaching! You see, the theology department at his university takes the position that belief in the Soon Coming of Christ is an hallucination. They claim that our brother was "mentally disturbed".

Well, that's the student evangelist. What about another example?

PASTOR ASSCHERICK BELIEVES IN BIBLICAL CREATION -- SO ADVENTIST UNIVERSITY SAYS HE'S NUTS

TOUCHDOWN!! Pastor David Asscherick is another top evangelist. He dared to preach the message "worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters". (per Revelation 14:7) An Adventist university in California had taken a contrary position. And the Adventist university's response? According to the Adventist La Sierra University, Pastor David Asscherick is "lunatic fringe"!!

And these are the only two faithful witnesses? Not at all. You can visit Adventist churches all around the world, and find plenty of righteous, sincere Christians. Among the members. After all, "But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal." Romans 11:4

Well, that's the first and second angels' messages. What about the third?

THIRD ANGEL: ITS BAD TO WORSHIP THE BEAST AND HIS IMAGE

And the Adventist church takes this seriously? Not very. Since the Adventist church has worshiped the beast (documented here), and even BUILT an image to the beast!!

The state of affairs in the Adventist church is confused. At the official website, they say they like the three angels' messages. But the real-life practice of this church, as an organization, involves active war on the messages, and messengers, of the three angels (as shown at the above links).

CONFUSION - THEY LOST THEIR IDENTITY AND MIXED WITH BABYLON

Confusion: "an act causing a disorderly combination of elements with identities lost and distinctions blended". http://www.wordreference.com/definition

"The term "Babylon" is derived from "Babel," and signifies confusion. It is employed in Scripture to designate the various forms of false or apostate religion." (Ellen White, The Great Controversy, p 381)

FALSE RELIGION - THEORY AND PRACTICE AT ADVENTIST UNIVERSITY

And you can't say it any better than that.

Apostasy: "Abandonment of one's religious faith, a political party, one's principles, or a cause." http://www.answers.com/topic/apostasy

In numerous, well-supported case studies, we've seen plenty of evidence that the official institutions of the Adventist church have abandoned religious faith in the Bible story of creation, and even the resurrection of Christ!!

WHEN CHURCHES REJECT THE MESSAGE

"As the churches refused to receive the first angel's message, they rejected the light from heaven and fell from the favor of God." (Ellen White, Early Writings, p 237) Not to mention contempt for the third angel's message.

THE HALLMARK OF A TRUE PROPHET

Top-ranking church leaders accuse Ellen White of stealing, drunkenness, and failed prophecies, but this example shows us yet again that she hit the nail right on the head. Hard.

This precious truth from Early Writings is about 130 years old -- but it could have been written yesterday!! And that is the power of prophecy.

A LIMITED, DOWNSIZED GOSPEL INTO ALL THE WORLD

But are those angels of Revelation 14 the only ones who have something useful to say?

Reading the official church website, you could easily get that impression:

"The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church ... is to proclaim to all people the everlasting gospel in the context of the Three Angels' messages of Revelation 14:6-12." http://www.adventist.org/mission_and_service/index.html.en

"ANOTHER ANGEL": BABYLON IS FALLEN

There was another angel mentioned in Revelation 18:

"[1] And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
[2] And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
[3] For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication". Revelation 18

But the high officials of the Adventist church don't like to talk about this message. After all, its not in their official mission. http://www.adventist.org/mission_and_service/index.html.en

COME OUT? NO, THEY BUILD BRIDGES FOR EASY FORNICATION WITH BABYLON

For years, the Adventist church, as an organization, has been busy building bridges to Rome:

"For many years the Adventist Church has engaged in conversations with representatives of other churches." (William G. Johnsson, S.J., Adventists and Muslims in Conversation - Breaking down prejudice by building bridges, Adventist World, April 2009, p 38)

IN CHARGE OF THE ROMANCE WITH BABYLON THE GREAT

William G. Johnsson SJ "currently is the Assistant to the President for Interfaith Relations at the church's headquarters." (William G. Johnsson, Wikipedia)

BRINGING TOGETHER WHAT GOD HAD MADE SEPARATE - HANGING OUT WITH ROME AND OTHER FALLEN CHURCHES

Hm. Other churches? Which ones might we be thinking of?

"The Conference of Secretaries represents about two billion Christians and covers more churches than any other organization, including the WCC. The Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Russian Orthodox Church are represented and so are the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran World Federation, the World Mennonite Conference, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the Baptist World Alliance, and others. Adventists have played an important role in this Conference". (John Graz, S.J., Is The General Conference Involved in Ecumenism?, Reflections - A BRI Newsletter, Number 19, July 2007, p 2)

"The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth." Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Chapter XXVII, p. 218, "Cities Petrus Bertanous". "...We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty..." Pope Leo XIII, in Praeclara Gratulationis Publicae (The Reunion of Christendom), Encyclical promulgated on June 20, 1894. http://www.users.qwest.net/~slrorer/ReunionOfChristendom.htm
http://amazingdiscoveries.org/AD-Articles-TotalOnslaught-ThePopeIsGodOnThisEarth.html

So of course the Jesuit leadership in the Adventist church has "played an important role in this Conference". (Graz, SJ, supra)

Keeping in mind, of course, that there are still plenty of faithful Christians left in the Adventist church: "Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel--all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and all whose mouths have not kissed him." 1 Kings 19:18 Plenty of Christians who don't agree with everything the Jesuit leadership comes up with.

ECUMENISM

"Ёcumenism or Œcumenism (also Ecumenism, oecumenism or even eucumenism) now mainly refers to initiatives aimed at greater religious unity or cooperation." (Ecumenism, Wikipedia) Initiatives like: "For many years the Adventist Church has engaged in conversations with representatives of other churches." (Johnsson, SJ, supra)

And the Adventist church admits it? Of course they do! The Adventist church has "ecumenical tendencies". (Reinder Bruinsma, Conspiracies, Adventist Review, 10 Sep 2009, p 27) "Reinder Bruinsma, Ph.D., is the president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Netherlands". http://www.ministrymagazine.org/authors/bruinsma-reinder.html

THE BIBLE CROWD: DON'T GET IN BED WITH BABYLON / SAYING NO TO FORNICATION

Oh, the Bible crowd had a problem with this. Men like Ken Cox and Walter Veith thought the Adventist church should be separate from Babylon.

AND SO THE TOP THEOLOGIANS MET IN COMMITTEE

The wise leaders of the Adventist church faced a really tough decision. Comply with the angel's command in Revelation 18, or get brownie points with Babylon.

AND THERE WERE SOME MINUTES OF SUSPENSE (ABOUT TWO MINUTES)

And the decision?

ECUMENICAL INITIATIVES BEAR FRUIT -- FAVOR WITH THE WORLD

"These encounters have resulted in much good, as stereotypes have been broken down and misunderstandings on both sides have been removed. On the Adventist side, a great benefit has been the dropping of the false designation of our church as a “cult” or “sect.”" (Johnsson, supra)

So -- they decided to curry favor with Babylon:

For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. John 12:43

ELLEN WHITE: PROTESTANT CHURCHES THAT SEEK THE FAVOR OF THE WORLD ARE BABYLON

"Many of the Protestant churches are ... seeking the favor of the world. And the term "Babylon"--confusion--may be appropriately applied to these bodies, all professing to derive their doctrines from the Bible, yet divided into almost innumerable sects, with widely conflicting creeds and theories." (Ellen White, The Great Controversy, p 383)

PROTESTANT CHURCHES LIKE THE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH

Wow! The Adventist church sought the "favor of the world" (as per White, supra). And they succeeded!!!! The Adventist church is no longer considered a "sect" (per Johnsson, supra) -- something different than the others. No, they've taken their rightful place among the daughters of Babylon:

"The Babylon thus described represents Rome, that apostate church which has so cruelly persecuted the followers of Christ." (Ellen White, The Spirit of Prophecy Volume Four, p 233)

See the story about the tasered evangelist. And decide if it fits this description.

"But Babylon the harlot is the mother of daughters who follow her example of corruption. Thus are represented those churches that cling to the doctrines and traditions of Rome and follow her worldly practices, and whose fall is announced in the second angel's message." (Ellen White, The Spirit of Prophecy Volume Four, p 233) The links in this paragraph are worth reading.

SO, DO TOP ADVENTIST PASTORS THINK THE CHURCH IS A "FALLEN DAUGHTER"?

Hm. Maybe the Adventist church has followed "worldly practices" (per White, supra), and is a fallen daughter of Babylon? Let's check in with the brilliant Adventist pastor David Asscherick: "we can be sure that the enemy has breached our lines." (David Asscherick, reference)

SHANE ANDERSON: THE ADVENTIST CHURCH HAS SPENT 20 YEARS TRYING TO BECOME LIKE THE WORLD -- AND IS LOSING ITS "REASON FOR BEING"

"Adventism has spent much of the past two decades attempting to move itself into mainstream Western culture, and in so doing Adventism’s reason for being has been, in my opinion, clouded--and thus, unavoidably, its educational system has been obscured as well." (Shane Anderson, Are We Killing Adventist Education, Adventist Review, October 15, 2009) "Shane Anderson is senior pastor of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in New Market, Virginia." (Shane Anderson, Are We Killing Adventist Education, Adventist Review, October 15, 2009) "No teaching . Nothing to distinguish Seventh Day Adventism from any other can of beans in a supermarket!" (Website Comment, http://adventistsnotcult.blogspot.com/2008/02/dr-walter-veith-can-adventists-lockdown.html "Many of the Protestant churches are ... seeking the favor of the world. And the term "Babylon"--confusion--may be appropriately applied to these bodies". (Ellen White, The Great Controversy, p 383)

In contrast, "Those who keep God's commandments, those who live not by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, compose the church of the living God." (Ellen White, S.D.A. Bible Commentary Vol. 7 (1957), p 949)

The bridges are in place (per Johnsson, supra), and the Adventist church has become so worldly that its "reason for being has been clouded" (Anderson, supra), so now the pope of Rome is ready to be of assistance. If a protestant church "isn't sure" any more, the pope has plenty of assurances ready!

WORD IS OUT - THE POPE IS READY TO CROSS THE BRIDGES THE ADVENTIST CHURCH BUILT

"Blog Alert: Last Tuesday Pope Benedict XVI issued the third encyclical of his papacy. In it, he calls for "a true world political authority" to combat the economic, social, and political problems of the world today. How does this alarming idea fit in with end-time prophecy? Read our most recent blog at http://capwiz.com/narla/utr/1/OVPLKVVYBB/
CQDDKVWAPR/3638707186 to see Barry Bussey's take on this issue." (North American Religious Liberty Association, Liberty Blog Alert: In Troubled Times, Pope Calls for a New World Order, 13 Jul 2009)

A "true world authority" could provide direction to these protestant churches that have lost their way in a flood of worldliness. After all, now that protestant churches, like the Adventist one, have built bridges to Rome, why shouldn't the pope make good use of them?

Of course, the angel in Revelation 18 had a different take on things:

ANGEL: "COME OUT"; ADVENTISTS: COMING INTO THE CLUB

[2] And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
[4] And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. Revelation 18

ADVENTISTS HAVE PATRONIZED POPERY FOR YEARS

For years, "Protestants have tampered with and patronized popery; they have made compromises and concessions which papists themselves are surprised to see and fail to understand. Men are closing their eyes to the real character of Romanism and the dangers to be apprehended from her supremacy. The people need to be aroused to resist the advances of this most dangerous foe to civil and religious liberty." (Ellen White, The Great Controversy, p. 566)

BARRY BUSSEY, ADVENTIST RELIGIOUS LIBERTY LEADER, THINKS HE HAS A SOLUTION

The Adventist church, as an organization, has built bridges to Babylon. The pope wants to use them, and Barry Bussey has sounded the alarm. "Barry W. Bussey, LL.M., Executive Director" heads "the North American Religious Liberty Association". http://religiousliberty.info/article.php?id=7

Of course, mere noise will solve no problem. So what is Mr. Bussey's suggestion? Does he think the bridges to Babylon should be dismantled? Should Adventists remove their organs, obelisks, and other heathen symbols from the churches? Should they stop participating in ecumenical bodies?

All these measures would be logical. And even biblically-correct, because they comply with the instructions of Revelation 18.

But then the other churches might start calling the Adventists a "sect" again. (as per Johnsson, supra) And church leaders would no longer be welcome at those ecumenical prayer breakfasts.

In short, they would lose the favor of the world.

But have no fear. Barry Bussey isn't suggesting anything like that!!

For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. John 12:43

Instead, he's suggesting that Adventists make a liberal donation to his operation. http://religiousliberty.info

For?

Well, for worship, of course.

Of?

OH, JUST THE BEAST

Worship is "adoration". http://www.answers.com/topic/worship Adoration is "profound regard". http://www.answers.com/topic/adoration

So, how would you go about showing regard for someone? Maybe thanking them, or sending a card. Perhaps a diamond pendant for that special woman.

OR A GOLD MEDAL! Now that's profound regard.

ADVENTIST LEADER PAYS FRIENDLY VISIT TO THE "THRONE OF SATAN"

"Dr. Bert B. Beach has served as General Secretary for the Seventh-day Adventist Council on Inter-Church Relations since 1980. He also served as secretary for the Conference of Secretaries of Christian World Communions from 1970-2002." http://parl.gc.adventist.org/aboutus/staff/beach.html

WORSHIPPING THE BEAST -- PROPHECY IS FULFILLED

Probably the high point of his unity work came when he presented a gold medal to the his superintendent, the man that Luther and Ellen White described as antichrist, on 18 May 1977.

Dr. Beach had been doing ecumenical work in Rome, and had no problem getting in to see his boss. "In connection with a recent consultative meeting of secretaries of World Confessional Families held in Rome, B. B. Beach, secretary of the Northern Europe-West Africa Division, one of the 15 participants and the only Adventist in the group, presented a book and a medallion to Pope Paul VI on May 18.

WORSHIPING THE BEAST

The book presented was the Adventist missionary book Faith in Action, and the medallion was a gold-covered symbol of the Seventh-day Adventist Church." (W. D. Eva, Book, Medallion Presented to Pope, The Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, August 11, 1977, p 23) Revelation 18 says to come out of Babylon, but Adventist leadership went right into the Babylon HQ with a tribute of gold.

AND WHO IS THE MAN THAT THE ADVENTIST CHURCH DELIGHTS TO HONOR?

"To believe that our Lord God the Pope has not the power to decree as he is decreed, is to be deemed heretical." The Gloss of Extravagantes of Pope John XXII, Cum. Inter, title 14, chapter 4, "Ad Callem Sexti Decretalium", Column 140, Paris, 1685. (In an Antwerp edition of the Extravagantes, the words, "Dominum Deum Nostrum Papam" ("Our Lord God the Pope") can be found in column 153).http://amazingdiscoveries.org/AD-Articles-TotalOnslaught-ThePopeIsGodOnThisEarth.html

AND THE RETURN ON INVESTMENT?

"It has shown that we are a Christian Church recognized by the Christian family of leaders. We are not a cult or a dangerous group of fanatics, but a Christian denomination." (John Graz, SJ, Is The General Conference Involved in Ecumenism?, Reflections - A BRI Newsletter, Number 19, July 2007, p 2)

And all they had to do was worship the beast!

JESUS TOOK A DIFFERENT APPROACH

The devil made the same offer to Jesus when the Master walked this earth:

6And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

7If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

8And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Luke 4

Jesus said no, but apparently the Adventist leadership lacked the strength to reject Satan's offer.

A TRIBUTE OF GOLD FOR THE NEW POPE

In 2009, the reign of Pope Paul VI is old history.

And Pope Benedict XVI will be wanting his gold medal from the Adventist church.

SO GIVE THIS MAN A GOLD MEDAL

So to those of you out there who want to stay free, now is the time to take concrete action!!

BRINGING A TRIBUTE OF GOLD TO THE THRONE OF SATAN

Yes, friends, the price of gold has gone up considerably since 1977, so that new gold medal for Pope Benedict will cost a lot. And then you add in travel costs for the Adventist ecumenism ambassadors, and a generous donation will be needed. After all, you don't expect these church leaders to stay at a camping site??

BUT THAT UNIQUE MISSION OF PROCLAIMING THE THREE ANGELS' MESSAGES?

Gone out of style. As Adventist Review Editor Klingbeil puts it: "As Christians we sometimes say these four words in many other forms. “Yes, I still remember the exciting moments of my first love for Jesus,” and it seems as if the excitement has gone from our eyes. “Yes, I once was very concerned about an authentic Christian lifestyle (including my diet, my dress, and my time management), but now I have moved on to different issues. This has been crossed off my list.” Been there—done that!" "Gerald A. Klingbeil is an associate editor of the Adventist Review." (Gerald Klingbeil, Been There - Done That!, Adventist Review, 15 Oct 2009, http://www.adventistreview.org/issue.php?issue=2009-1529&page=6

NOW THE ADVENTIST LEADERSHIP REPAIRS TO LUTHERAN AND CATHOLIC HOUSES OF WORSHIP
Sure there had been a time when Adventists paid attention to Revelation 18. Some of the members still remember those "exciting moments". But now they "have moved on to different issues" (Klingbeil, supra), like how to win the favor of the world, and get special audiences with the boss in Rome. (per Eva, supra) Instead of digging into the word, or studying the messages of the prophet, top Adventist leaders repair to "this wonderfully designed place of worship owned by the Lutheran Evangelical Church" (Klingbeil, supra), or, say, a Jesuit monastery, or the Vatican. Like our Adventist brother Bert Beach, S.J., did on that happy day back in 1977. (Eva, SJ, supra)

"I am most certainly declaring that we currently have large numbers of baptized Seventh-day Adventists--paid clergy and laity--who, while they think much of Christ and His grace, don’t have much regard for Adventist claims to having a unique mission in the world." (Shane Anderson, Are We Killing Adventist Education, Adventist Review, October 15, 2009) And that's why the top Jesuit/Adventist leaders now worship in Lutheran and Catholic churches -- when "traveling". (per Klingbeil, supra)

IT USED TO BE ...

The Adventists used to have a unique mission:

"Our only unique contribution to the religious world has been the three angels’ messages and the connection they made for us with the sanctuary and judgment teaching.”

That’s it: the three angels’ messages found in Revelation 14:6-13. Our church has been called to trumpet this truth in the last days of earth’s history." (Karl Haffner, Universal Mission of Hope, Adventist Review, 24 Sep 2009, p 6) "Karl Haffner ... is senior pastor of the Kettering Seventh-day Adventist Church and mission strategist for Kettering Health Network in Ohio, U.S.A.", and has "a Master of Divinity degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Andrews University." (Karl Haffner, Universal Mission of Hope, Adventist Review, 24 Sep 2009, p 6)

But now, as we've seen above, official Adventist church practice is in opposition to the three angels' messages.

BUT THEY STILL WANT MISSION MONEY

"If we are to make significant progress in the proclamation of the Three Angels’ Messages, we, as members, need again set aside a faithful and sacred percentage of income for the mission offering." (Mike Ryan, Vice President, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, EDITORIAL: Will He Find Faith on the Earth?, Frontline Edition, Adventist Mission, http://www.adventistmission.org/article.php?id=446

Is this really the way? Will sacrificial offerings be pleasing to the Lord?

"And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams." 1 Samuel 15:22

To obey? Oh, little things like obeying the Revelation 18 command to come out of Babylon, instead of building bridges into Babylon (as per Johnsson, S.J., supra) Or preaching the first angel's message, rather than beating and tasering faithful Adventist brethren who are getting the word out to the nations.

"SURE WE BEAT AND TASER EVANGELISTS WHO PROCLAIM THE THREE ANGELS' MESSAGES, BUT GIVE US YOUR MONEY ANYWAY"

The Jesuit leadership still wants your money. So they can "make significant progress in the proclamation of the Three Angels’ Messages" (Ryan, supra).

They say.

"BEWARE OF FALSE TEACHERS IN YOUR CHURCH" (Angel Manuel Rodríguez)

"Angel Manuel Rodríguez is director of the Biblical Research Institute [S.J.] of the General Conference." He has a warning for his fellow Adventists: "Meanwhile, beware of false teachers in your church, and beware of their greed (2 Peter 2:2)!" (Angel Manuel Rodríguez, Gloomy Dungeons for Evil Angels, Adventist World, September 2009)

"AND BEWARE OF THEIR GREED" (Angel Manuel Rodríguez)

"If we are to make significant progress in the proclamation of the Three Angels’ Messages, we, as members, need again set aside a faithful and sacred percentage of income for the mission offering." (Mike Ryan, supra)

God's Chosen Servant

Matthew 12:14-21

King James Version Bible

14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

16 And charged them that they should not make him known:

17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.

20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

*Verses 18-21 found in Isaiah (Esaias) Chapter 42.

Christ is risen? Not so fast, says Microsoft

Wednesday, January 13, 2010
By M Scherer-Emunds

For many years a former co-worker, a huge Mac fan, harangued us about the evil machinations of Microsoft and its march toward world domination. We never paid him much heed, but I'm beginning to wonder if maybe he was on to something when he identified Bill Gates as the Antichrist.

Earlier today I was busy editing an upcoming essay for U.S. Catholic magazine when I noticed that little green squiggly line the built-in proofing tool in Microsoft Word puts under words it doesn't like or flags for possible mistakes or suggestions for improvement.

The sentence MS Word brought to my attention read: "He is risen," and the little squiggly green line under "risen" was letting me know that Bill Gates apparently had some serious doubts about that.

"Verb Confusion," Bill admonished me. "You may be confusing the marked verb with a similar sounding verb."

To avoid the confusion, Bill suggested I might just rephrase, "He is raised." To what location Christ was to be raised, however, he didn't say. Maybe back onto the cross?

Sorry, Jesus, Bill says, no empty tomb for you!

Obviously there must be some vast, global anti-Christian conspiracy going on here, with evil Microsoft and the abominable Bill Gates cleverly and subliminally undermining faith in Christianity's most fundamental teaching.

Unfortunately, I'm kinda busy right now, so maybe I'll just shoot an e-mail over to Bill Donohue or Don Wildmon to get the boycott started. They must have a lot of time on their hands because I haven't heard of any boycott calls from them for quite some time--at least a whole week!

Could the Haiti Earthquake Have Been Predicted?

By Jeffrey Kluger Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010

Haiti's damaged presidential palace
Eduardo Munoz / Reuters

The tragedy of the earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday is easy to measure in the lives lost, homes destroyed and infrastructure wrecked. The paradox of the quake is equally evident: when a natural disaster so devastating hits, oughtn't we have some way of predicting it? Hurricanes, blizzards, even volcanoes can be forecast well before their arrival, after all, allowing governments and people to make lifesaving preparations. Earthquakes, however, are stealth disasters, geological phenomena largely undetectable until just seconds before they occur. What scientists have long wanted to know is why quakes are so sneaky and what, if anything, can be done to read their warning signs better.

If any earthquake ought to have been predictable, it was the one that just struck. Haiti sits over two clashing tectonic plates, the North American and the Caribbean, which form what's known as the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault. Geologists know the fault well and have studied it for decades, and well they should: it has shaken the region violently and repeatedly over history, though yesterday's quake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, is the worst in a century.
.
(See pictures of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.)
.
"The plates are shearing the island, grinding it and crushing it," says geophysicist Michael Blanpied of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). "As that happens, earthquakes pop off."

Monitoring zones like this around the world to get a general sense of where the next such pops may happen is not that difficult, mostly because tectonic activity is hard to conceal completely. There are three types of quakes: the dip-slip fault (in which one clashing plate slides under the other), the reverse dip-slip (in which they pull apart) and the strike-slip (a sideways grinding of the plates). Haiti's quake was a strike-slip, but all three varieties are preceded by years or centuries of accumulated stress, in which the slowly drifting slabs of planet try to shift their position but remain hung up on one another. The quake occurs when that rock lock is broken. Seismometers can detect the years of stirrings that lead up to that moment, providing some help to geologists.

"We can say things generally about earthquakes," says Blanpied. "We look at faults and patterns of quakes over many years and say where on the landscape they're likeliest to occur next. This forecasting is usually in the long term." Indeed, scientists predicted as recently as 2008 that a fault zone on the south side of Haiti's island of Hispaniola posed a "major seismic hazard."

The problem is, long-term forecasting does not do much to keep people from putting themselves in harm's way. If it did, nobody would live in California or Mexico City or parts of Japan. What's needed is short-term forecasting on the order of weeks, days or hours. And this has stymied scientists again and again.

In the 1980s, for example, the USGS partnered with the state of California to study a particularly unstable stretch of the San Andreas fault near the town of Parkfield. Quakes had been occurring in the area every 20 to 25 years or so. The previous one had been in 1966, so scientists predicted another should hit before 1990. They threaded the region with seismometers and other sensors, then sat back and waited for the telltale signal that would give them notice of the coming rumble. The quake never occurred in the 1980s, nor in the 1990s. It was not until 2004 that the earth in the area at last moved again. And what did all the high-tech hardware reveal? Nothing.

"We did capture wonderful information about the earthquake afterwards," says Blanpied. "But the earth gave no indication with a foreshock or an electrical signal or a water signal or anything else. It demonstrates to us what we've already learned: earthquake prediction, if it can be done at all, is very difficult."

That's not to say geologists aren't making headway. Instruments that detect P waves are a good example. Earthquakes set off two kinds of seismic vibrations: body waves, which move through the interior of the earth, and surface waves, which move on top. The fastest of the body waves is the P wave, and it's thus the first to travel from the epicenter to a seismic station where it can be detected. P waves don't give you a whole lot of notice, but even a little bit can help. In California, gas lines in many homes are now equipped with P-wave detectors, which sense a coming tremor and shut off the inflow valve to prevent fires and explosions if the house is shaken severely.

Much to the disappointment of pet lovers, the celebrated ability of animals to predict quakes before they happen is not all it's said to be. It's true that animals are more sensitive to shaking than humans are, so they may feel a tremor a few seconds before we do. But you need the right animal in the right spot at just the right moment, and even then, that detection doesn't buy you much extra time. Nonetheless, Blanpied says, the research goes on.

For now, the best the USGS and other organizations can do is use the global web of seismometers and other instruments that are already in place and always being improved to build the best map possible of the planet's interior and at least narrow the predictive window of when quakes are likely to happen. They can also use these data to anticipate how severe the next tremor, whenever it comes, is likely to be. This can help drive policy decisions like improving building codes, reinforcing infrastructure and zoning some areas as unsuitable for development. That's hardly the same as precise predicting, but if your home or your life is the one that's spared, it's plenty good enough.

Dominican Republic aid to Haiti eases historic tensions

January 13, 2010 10:01 p.m. EST

(CNN) -- The Dominican Republic was the first country to give aid to Haiti in the aftermath of Tuesday's devastating earthquake. Some of the first video images of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince came from a Dominican television crew.

On the face of it, the quick reaction from Haiti's neighbor may not seem surprising given their proximity. But historically, a much wider gap in relations has existed between Haiti and the Dominican Republic since colonial times. The Dominican Republic's outpouring of support to Haiti is a reminder of how the less-than-friendly legacy between the two nations has been buried even deeper.

Some tensions still exist between citizens of both countries. Dominicans recall how they were under Haitian rule for a period in the mid-1800s, and how they repeatedly fought Haitian aggressions. Today, Haitians provide cheap labor in the Dominican Republic, a trend that has caused resentment on both sides, not unlike the illegal immigration debate in the United States.

But as far as the countries themselves are officially concerned, "relations are at a high point compared to 20 or 30 years ago," Ernesto Sagas, associate professor of ethnic studies at Colorado State University, told CNN. "Relations between the countries at the presidential level are at high levels."

Dominican Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua surveyed the damage in Port-au-Prince Wednesday as his country planned the necessary logistics to provide international aid.

"The center of the city, where the presidential palace collapsed, is practically completely destroyed," Diaz Rua told CNN en Español, noting he saw hotels, schools and hospitals that were damaged.

Diaz Rua also saw few emergency teams working.

"We're going to send teams from the Dominican Republic to help with the rescue. We're going to send food, water and mobile clinics," he said.

Such cooperation was not historically the case.

Haiti, a former French colony, and the Dominican Republic, with roots as a Spanish colony, have tensions that go back to those days, Sagas said.

The Dominican Republic gained its independence from Haiti in 1844, after Haiti had occupied it. The Dominicans spent the next 20 years fighting off Haitian invasion attempts.

By the early 20th century, Haitians had become a source of cheap labor in the neighboring country. Racism and security concerns resulted in a massacre in 1937. Dominican leader Rafael Trujillo ordered the execution of Haitians living near the border between the countries, resulting in the killings of 20,000 to 30,000 Haitians, historians say.

The current tragedy appears to push those tensions further into the past.

"This is the worst disaster in Haiti's recorded history," Sagas said. "The best role the DR can play is to open its border for other nations to funnel all the aid to Haiti."

The Dominican Republic appears to be following that path.

The government on Wednesday started sending food, medicine and rescue crews to Haiti, the El Nacional newspaper reported. Top Dominican leaders amassed at the border as a staging ground to begin transporting aid into the country. Are you looking for loved ones?

Among the aid are 10 mobile cafeterias that can produce 100,000 meals a day, and heavy equipment to remove debris, Diaz Rua said.

Judge Orders $500G for Each of Tony Alamo's Victims

TEXARKANA, Arkansas -- Five young women who testified last year that evangelist Tony Alamo took them as "wives" and sexually assaulted them when they were minors are entitled to $500,000 each from his multi-million-dollar ministry, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.
U.S. District Judge Harry F. Barnes ordered restitution after a government witness said the women suffered physical and mental pain at the hands of Alamo, who is serving a 175-year prison sentence for taking the women when they were underage across state lines for sex.

In his ruling, Barnes noted that each of the victims were assaulted by someone they regarded as a pastor and prophet.

"The defendant has truly, truly damaged these five young girls and I don't think amount of money this court can order can replace their loss," Barnes said.

Prosecutors said they were confident Alamo, 75, could afford the $2.5 million judgment even though most of his assets are held in his followers' names. He will not have to pay the restitution until his appeals are exhausted.

"The challenge is going to be uncovering them and finding what names they're placed under," Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyra Jenner said.

Alamo's lawyer, Don Ervin, said he was disappointed after arguing the five were not entitled to any restitution. He said claims of longterm pain and suffering were speculative and based on medical or health issues that had not yet emerged.

Ervin also argued each woman should have been evaluated separately and received compensation based on their own history.

The government had sought $2.7 million per woman, or a total of $13.5 million.

Dr. Sharon Cooper, a retired Army colonel and developmental and forensic pediatrician, told Barnes the women continue to suffer chronic back pain because they were forced to give Alamo massages every night while they were kept at his compound near Fouke in southwest Arkansas. Each woman, now aged 18-33, also suffers persistent and painful menstrual cramps associated with sexual abuse, Cooper said.

All five suffered mental health problems, included post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression. One suffered vision loss in one eye because she said she'd been repeatedly punched at Alamo's orders, Cooper testified.

Cooper testified that the victims had been sexually abused and exploited, falsely imprisoned by Alamo and suffered neglect.

"When you add all of this together, these would be considered over the top in terms of adverse childhood experience," said Cooper, who evaluated the women at her clinic in North Carolina last September.

At last year's trial, the women testified that Alamo kept firm control over everything at his complex. Cooper said his five victims were undereducated -- none had a high school diploma -- and all lacked insurance.

Without treatment, Cooper said, the victims will "struggle mightily."

Alamo, who scowled and sighed during Cooper's testimony, presides over a church that claims 100-200 members. Trucking companies, residential property and a number of other ventures fund the ministry's work, including a printing operation that prints church paraphernalia that blames the government or the Vatican -- or both -- for his and the world's problems.

Alamo once owned a Nashville, Tennessee, clothing store that catered to celebrities desiring his elaborately decorated jean jackets. His home at Dyer included a heart-shaped swimming pool, but followers who lived on the grounds kept sleeping bags in meeting rooms.

At a bond hearing in 2008, an FBI agent said businesses produce a "substantial amount" of income controlled by Alamo but that none of the property shows up in the minister's name -- though he couldn't provide an estimate of Alamo's worth.

In the 1990s, Alamo, who was shackled at the ankles as he sat at the defense table on Wednesday, spent four years in prison for tax evasion and the IRS laid claim to millions of dollars in back taxes. Among items sold at auction were the plans for the studded jacket Michael Jackson wore on his "Bad" album.
