USA Today cites Seventh-day Adventist in Easter dispute

April 14th, 2011 3:07 pm ET .

Adam Hendron

Seventh-day Adventist Examiner.

As to whether Jesus was really in the grave for three days, columnist Daniel Burke quoted a scholar from the SDA Biblical Research Institute, yesterday. “Ancient Jews,” said Clinton Wahlen, “used what scholars call ‘inclusive reckoning,’ meaning any part of a day is counted as a whole day.” It’s that simple, according to the Church.

The article goes on to cite others, however, complicating the matter considerably. Indeed it seems this may have been the author’s purpose, making a general mockery of the matter. Especially in the comments section, Jesus is crucified as before.

At issue is the consistency of Scripture, which if found untrustworthy, would give men a license to sin. Carnal minds are only too eager for such an excuse, and no amount of reasoning, it seems, will persuade them. Because the Bible indicates that Jesus died Friday afternoon and arose early Sunday morning, some argue that it was not technically the “three days” that Jesus predicted in Matthew 12:40. But in chapter 17 and verse 23 of that same book, Jesus says “the third day he shall be raised.” This allows that the Lord could arise at any time during that last day, coming short of a full 72 hours. There now, are we happy?

Passion weekend is a favorite theme for Seventh-day Adventists, as it affirms their day of assembly. Scripture says of Christ’s followers, “in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher,” Mark 16:2. Since Sunday is held to be the first day of the week, it shows Saturday to be the true day of rest and worship. “The seventh day is the Sabbath” Exodus 20:10.

Notwithstanding the gainsaying of others, Seventh-day Adventists believe the Bible is clear enough on this subject. Moreover, they believe God supplied the prophet Ellen White—a “lesser light”—to underscore the greater light of Scripture. In vision, White beheld Christ's Passion. Not from historical writings, but as an eyewitness, she confirms what we call "crucifixion Friday" on the sixth day of the week, Saturday on the seventh, and "resurrection Sunday" the first.* …For what it’s worth.

Go Forward!

"What voice will you acknowledge as the voice of God? What power has the Lord in reserve to correct your errors and show you your course as it is? What power to work in the church? If you refuse to believe until every shadow of uncertainty and every possibility of doubt is removed, you will never believe. The doubt that demands perfect knowledge will never yield to faith. Faith rests upon evidence, not demonstration. The Lord requires us to obey the voice of duty, when there are other voices all around us urging us to pursue an opposite course. It requires earnest attention from us to distinguish the voice which speaks from God. We must resist and conquer inclination, and obey the voice of conscience without parleying or compromise, lest its promptings cease, and will and impulse control. {1SM 27.3}

"The word of the Lord comes to us all who have not resisted His Spirit by determining not to hear and obey. This voice is heard in warnings, in counsels, in reproof. It is the Lord's message of light to His people. If we wait for louder calls or better opportunities, the light may be withdrawn, and we left in darkness.... {1SM 28.1}

"It pains me to say, my brethren, that your sinful neglect to walk in the light has enshrouded you in darkness. You may now be honest in not recognizing and obeying the light; the doubts you have entertained, your neglect to heed the requirements of God, have blinded your perception so that darkness is now to you light, and light is darkness. God has bidden you to go forward to perfection. Christianity is a religion of progress. Light from God is full and ample, waiting our demand upon it. Whatever blessings the Lord may give, He has an infinite supply beyond, an inexhaustible store from which we may draw. Skepticism may treat the sacred claims of the gospel with jests, scoffing, and denial. The spirit of worldliness may contaminate the many and control the few; the cause of God may hold its ground only by great exertion and continual sacrifice, yet it will triumph finally. {1SM 28.2}

"The word is: Go forward; discharge your individual duty, and leave all consequences in the hands of God. If we move forward where Jesus leads the way we shall see His triumph, we shall share His joy. We must share the conflicts if we wear the crown of victory. Like Jesus, we must be made perfect through suffering. Had Christ's life been one of ease, then might we safely yield to sloth. Since His life was marked with continual self-denial, suffering, and self-sacrifice, we shall make no complaint if we are partakers with Him. We can walk safely in the darkest path if we have the Light of the world for our guide.... {1SM 28.3}

"When the Lord last presented your case before me, and made known to me that you had not regarded the light which had been given you, I was bidden to speak to you plainly in His name, for His anger was kindled against you. These words were spoken to me: 'Your work is appointed you of God. Many will not hear you, for they refused to hear the Great Teacher; many will not be corrected, for their ways are right in their own eyes. Yet bear to them the reproofs and warnings I shall give you, whether they will hear or forbear.'"... {1SM 29.1}

A Time for Decision!

Choose you this day whom ye will serve. Joshua 24:15.

Today the world is mad: an insanity is upon men and women, and is hurrying them on to eternal ruin. Every species of indulgence prevails, and men have become so infatuated with vice that they will not listen to warnings or appeals. {Mar 108.1}

The Lord says to the people of the earth, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." All are now deciding their eternal destiny. Men need to be aroused to realize the solemnity of the time, the nearness of the day when human probation shall be ended. God gives no man a message that it will be five years or ten years or twenty years before this earth's history shall close. He would not give any living being an excuse for delaying the preparation for His appearing. He would have no one say, as did the unfaithful servant, "My lord delayeth his coming;" for this leads to reckless neglect of the opportunities and privileges given to prepare us for that great day. Everyone who claims to be a servant of God is called to do His service as if each day might be the last. . . . {Mar 108.2}

Talk of the speedy appearing of the Son of man in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Put not off that day. . . . {Mar 108.3}

Here is the great burden to be carried by each one. Are my sins forgiven? Has Christ, the burden-bearer, taken away my guilt? Have I a clean heart, purified by the righteousness of Jesus Christ? Woe be to any soul who is not seeking a refuge in Christ. Woe be to all who shall in any way divert the mind from the work, and cause any soul to be less vigilant now. . . . {Mar

The great work from which the mind should not be diverted is the consideration of our personal standing in the sight of God. Are our feet on the Rock of Ages? Are we hiding ourselves in the only Refuge? The storm is coming, relentless in its fury. Are we prepared to meet it? Are we one with Christ as He is one with the Father? Are we heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ? . . . {Mar 108.5}

The character of Christ is to be our character. We are to be transformed by the renewing of our hearts. Here is our only safety. Nothing can separate a living Christian from God. {Mar 108.6} ,

THE TRAGEDY of OUR 16th PRESIDENT

Who was Abraham Lincoln? Jeff Rogers, Yahoo! Contributor Network Apr 13, 2011 Today, April 14th, is the 146th year since the assassination of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. I have long been fascinated by Lincoln and the time in which he lived. I just recently finished watching the documentary of the Civil War, by the renowned Ken Burns. There are times in just about every one of his documentaries that bring me to tears. This one is no exception. I think two of the most moving portions of the documentary were the reading of Lincoln's simple but profound Gettysburg address, and the assassination of the President himself. I am not one who would approve of speaking ill of the dead, but in the interest in academic honesty and historic integrity I want to point out a few things that I have learned in my own study of our great emancipator; "Honest Abe". I just recently finished reading four books by a man named Thomas J. DiLorenzo. Each book was eye opening and impeccably documented. I highly recommend any and all of these books, (they are listed below). But if you want to read magazine sized articles by the same author about Lincoln and other topics then I recommend the link below where you can access many articles with much the same information of the books. My views about this time period of our country are continually opening up to new information and I am still in transition, but clearly there is a "Lincoln myth" out there and because the victors of any war are the ones who get to write the history of that war and its leaders; there is much that has been left out of our school textbooks and public school curriculum. I have made two trips to both his home in Springfield IL and to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. and I was endeared to the life and faith of our 16th President. But some of this (well documented) information was not accessible to me on these trips or in any of the books in the Lincoln gift shops. Chinese Christians arrested for trying to hold open-air service

Members of Shouwang church bundled into vans in Beijing in latest Communist party suppression of protest and dissent Reuters in Beijing guardian.co.uk, Sunday 10 April 2011 11.40 BST

Dozens of Christians who planned to hold an outdoor service in Beijing in protest at being made "homeless" from their place of worship have been arrested, in the latest Communist party crackdown on dissent and demonstrations.

Police cordoned off the walkway where a mobile phone text message had said the service would happen. Officers and plainclothes guards took away dozens of people; it was unclear how many were church members, supporters or bystanders.

The Shouwang church, a Protestant group with about 1,000 members, claims official pressure forced it out of a place of worship it had been renting.

Bob Fu, of the China Aid Association, a US-based group critical of China's controls on religion, said police had told one church elder the planned service would be an "illegal gathering".

Police kept church elders and pastors in their homes to stop them trying to attend the service, and some were held in police stations, Fu said. "Many members of the church are professionals and students, and some are human rights lawyers, which also makes the church a target," he added.

Reuters reporters were kept away from the site of the planned service, followed by police officers and shoved away by plainclothes guards who would not say whom they worked for. "We will live up to our duty to protect stability in Beijing. There's nothing happening here," said one police officer who stopped and checked reporters.

The Chinese government has been alarmed about calls for protests inspired by anti-authoritarian uprisings across the Middle East. The artist Ai Weiwei, a prominent human rights advocate, was held by police this month during a wide security clampdown

Fu said: "I think this reflects the overall panic mood of the government leadership over what's happening in the Middle East and north Africa. I don't see any possibility that the government will yield to [the church's] demands, given the climate there. It's reasonable to expect more clashes." Chinese authorities have detained many dozens, if not hundreds, of dissidents, human rights activists and persistent protesters. Many remain in custody.

Ai Weiwei was detained by police a week ago, and the government has since said he is suspected of "economic crimes". His family has rejected that charge as unfounded.

On Saturday Beijing dismissed a US state department report claiming its human rights restrictions and abuses were worsening, saying it wanted no interference in what it deemed internal affairs.

Didst not thou agree with me for a penny?

1For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. 2And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. 5Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. 6And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? 7They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. 8So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. 9And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 10But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. 11And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, 12Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? 14Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. 15Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? 16So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

Happy Sabbath

Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come

37But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 40Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 41Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 42Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. 43But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 44Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. 45Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? 46Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 47Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. 48But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; 49And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; 50The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, 51And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Faded Blessings And Perilous Times!

Volume XXX Issue III March 2011 Last Trumpet Ministries, PO Box 806, Beaver Dam, WI 53916 Fax: 920-887-2626 Internet: http://www.lasttrumpetministries.org/

"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away." II Timothy 3:1-5 .

"See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it. I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them."

Ho-hum Obama is at Georgetown Catholic U again today

.. .

by John-Henry Westen

Wed Mar 30, 2011 17:09 EST

It seems President Obama has a continuous green light to use Georgetown University (a Jesuit university) for his political purposes. The last time he appeared there in 2009, there was controversy as the University agreed to a White House request to cover up an ancient symbol of Jesus’ name. .

After the infamous 2009 granting of an honorary doctorate to Obama that took place at Notre Dame U despite the objections of more than 80 U.S. bishops, today’s appearance at Georgetown hardly merited a headline.

Perhaps Georgetown is just so open-minded and generous that any and all comers may make use of their elaborate facilities. Perhaps that explains why:

  • - In 2006 the University honored the originator of the “personally opposed but” stance on abortion – Fr. Robert Drinan

  • - Pro-abortion Catholic Vice President Joe Biden was honored at Georgetown in 2009. -

  • - Earlier this year they gave a platform to the nation’s leading gay activist group Human Rights Campaign

. Oh, but wait, at times they are not so permissive. Remember in 2006 it was Georgetown again who booted various Christian groups off campus. But not all Christian groups were affected by the ban, only . conservative ones. .

And what happens when some unforeseeable error occurs and a conservative takes the stage at Georgetown? Why one of the professors of theology will march off stage in a huff, and 70 faculty members will sign a letter of protest against the speech. And that’s just what happened to Vatican Cardinal Francis Arinze when he spoke at Georgetown in 2003. .

Spiritual and Physical Hazards of Indulged Appetite

and Physical Hazards of Indulged Appetite -

Changes Because of Use of Flesh Food

The flesh of dead animals was not the original food for man. Man was permitted to eat it after the Flood because all vegetation had been destroyed. But the curse pronounced upon man and the earth and every living thing has made strange and wonderful changes. Since the Flood the human race has been shortening its period of existence. Physical, mental, and moral degeneracy is rapidly increasing in these latter days.--Manuscript 3, 1897. {

3SM 289.1} Taste in Judgment Corrupted

You know not the danger of eating meat merely because your appetite craves it. By partaking of this diet, man places in his mouth that which stimulates unholy passions. Unhallowed emotions fill the mind, and the spiritual eyesight is beclouded; for the tendency of self-gratification is to corrupt the taste and the judgment. By furnishing your table with this kind of food, you go counter to the will of God. A condition of things is brought about which will lead to a disregard of the precepts of God's law. . . . {3SM 289.2}

But it is not an easy matter to overcome hereditary and cultivated tendencies to wrong. Self is masterful, and strives for the victory. But to "him that overcometh" the promises are given. The Lord presents the right way, but He compels no one to obey. He leaves those to whom He has given the light to receive or despise it, but their course of action is followed by sure results. Cause must produce effect. . . . {3SM 289.3}

Parents have a most solemn obligation resting upon them to conform to right habits of eating and drinking. Set before your children simple, wholesome food, avoiding everything of a stimulating nature. The effect which a meat diet has upon nervous children is not to make them sweet tempered and patient, but peevish, irritable, passionate, and impatient of restraint. Virtuous practices are lost, and corruption destroys mind, soul, and body.--Manuscript 47, 1896. {3SM 290.1}

Spiritual Health Sacrificed Eating the flesh of dead animals is deleterious to the health of the body, and all who use a meat diet are increasing their animal passions and are lessening their susceptibility of the soul to realize the force of truth and the necessity of its being brought into their practical life.--Letter 54, 1896. {3SM 290.2}

Religious and Physical Life Related

Eating the flesh of dead animals has an injurious effect upon spirituality. When meat is made the staple article of food, the higher faculties are overborne by the lower passions. These things are an offense to God, and are the cause of a decline in spiritual life. . . .

Whatever we do in the line of eating and drinking should be done with the special purpose of nourishing the body, that we may serve God to His name's glory. The whole body is the property of God, and we must give strict attention to our physical well-being, for the religious life is closely related to physical habits and practices.--Letter 69, 1896.

The Lord has been teaching His people that it is for their spiritual and physical good to abstain from flesh eating. There is no need to eat the flesh of dead animals.--Letter 83, 1901. {3

SM 291.1}

The Peril of Willing Ignorance

What we eat and drink has an important bearing on our lives, and Christians should bring their habits of eating and drinking into conformity with the laws of nature. We must sense our obligations toward God in these matters. Obedience to the laws of health should be made a matter of earnest study; for willing ignorance on this subject is sin. Each one should feel a personal obligation to carry out the laws of healthful living. {3SM 291.2}

To Whom Do We Belong?

Many turn away from the light, provoked because a word of caution is given, and ask, "May we not do as we please with ourselves?" Did you create yourselves? Did you pay the redemption price for your souls and bodies? If so, you belong to yourselves. But the Word of God declares, "Ye are bought with a price," "the precious blood of Christ." The Word of God tells us plainly that our natural habits are to be strictly guarded and controlled. "Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul." Shall we do this? The Word of God is perfect, converting the soul. If we diligently heed its precepts, we shall be conformed, physically and spiritually, into the image of God.--Letter 103, 1896. {3SM 291.3}

Hindrances to Mental Improvement and Soul Sanctification

God requires continual advancement from His people. They need to learn that indulged appetite is the greatest hindrance to mental improvement and soul sanctification. As a people, with all our profession of health reform, we eat too much. Indulgence of appetite is the greatest cause of physical and mental debility, and lies largely at the foundation of feebleness and premature death. Intemperance begins at our tables when we use an unwise combination of foods. Let the individual who is seeking to possess purity of spirit bear in mind that in Christ there is power to control the appetite.--Manuscript 73, 1908. {3SM 291.4}

As we approach the close of this earth's history, selfishness, violence, and crime prevail, as in the days of Noah. And the cause is the same--the excessive indulgence of the appetites and passions. A reform in the habits of life is especially needed at this time, in order to fit a people for the coming of Christ. The Saviour Himself warns the church: "Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares."

Hygienic reform is a subject that we need to understand in order to be prepared for the events that are close upon us. It is a branch of the Lord's work which has not received the attention it deserves, and much has been lost through neglect. It should have a prominent place; it is not a matter to be trifled with, to be passed over as non-essential, or to be treated as a jest. If the church would manifest a greater interest in this reform, their influence for good would be greatly increased. {3SM 292.2}

For those who are looking for the coming of the Lord, for those who are called to be laborers in His vineyard--for all who are fitting themselves for a place in the everlasting kingdom--how important that the brain be clear, and the body as free as possible from disease.--Undated Manuscript 9. {3SM 292.3}

The Military's Pandora's Box

The Military's Pandora's Box

by Dr. Nick Begich and Jeane Manning

This article was prepared to provide a summary of the contents of a book written in 1995 which describes an entirely new class of weapons. The weapons and their effects are described in the following pages. The United States Navy and Air Force have joined with the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, to build a prototype for a ground based "Star Wars" weapon system located in the remote bush country of Alaska.

The individuals who are demanding answers about HAARP are scattered around the planet. As well as bush dwellers in Alaska, they include: a physician in Finland; a scientist in Holland; an anti-nuclear protester in Australia; independent physicists in the United States; a grandmother in Canada, and countless others.
