A photograph of the Georgetown Jesuit who was jailed after being mistaken for John Wilkes Booth is only one of about 80 Civil War items on display at the Georgetown University’s Lauinger Library through the month of June.

The items are from the library’s Special Collections Research Center and from the Woodstock College Archives.

Authorities released John B. Guida, S.J., a philosophy professor, once Booth (who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln) was found.

“On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Special Collections Research Center wanted to tell the story of the war’s impact on Georgetown and its faculty and students,” explained University Archivist Lynn Conway, who put the exhibition together. “It is a story of perseverance and survival.

Faith And Freedom Conference: How Will Religion Affect Evangelical Votes?

Jaweed Kaleem

Posted: 06/ 4/11 08:29 AM ET

WASHINGTON, D.C. –- Fifteen years ago, Phil DaCosta spent Sundays passing out voter guides at his church about where congressional candidates stood on abortion and school prayer as part of a Christian Coalition chapter he lead at his Southern Baptist congregation in Florida.

Now a married father of a three-year-old living in Atlanta, the self-described “values voter” hopped on a bus this week with dozens of Tea Party supporters who came from as far as Florida and Iowa to attend the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in the nation's capital. The two-day event ending Saturday night is intended to reinvigorate the religious right ahead of 2012 elections.

“I vote on Jesus first,” said DaCosta, 42, who recently joined a Tea Party chapter and said he wants lower taxes and a smaller government. “Israel, abortion, marriage, those are my first issues.”

He's the exact kind of voter that Ralph Reed, the veteran political strategist and former Christian Coalition director, wants to unite under his relatively new organization that aims to fuse the Bible-based value voting of traditional social conservatives with the grassroots momentum of the Tea Party to form a bloc of voters big enough to influence state and national elections.

But DaCosta may be a unique example.

Attendees donned American flag-print outfits, there were speeches on fiscal restraint and top-tier Republican presidential candidates and potential candidates touted their patriotism at Friday's high-profile event. The two dozen of attendees interviewed by The Huffington Post included a mix of political strategists, campaign volunteers and curious Americans from across the country who came to see speakers such as Utah Gov. John Huntsman, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Minneota Rep. Michelle Bachmann.

Yet the role of faith in the attendees' politics was less clear.

“I'm Christian, but I don't go to a church. I believe in the Bible, but I vote on policies,” said Harold White, a 62-year-old from South Carolina who had joined on the Tea Party bus to the conference. “I would never vote for a Mormon,” he added, such as Huntsman or a former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who also spoke, “because their beliefs are plain weird.”

The conservative Christian political landscape has changed since the 1990s, when the Christian Coalition rose to prominence with its extensive voter lists, big pockets and outsized influence among politicians. Scholars who study the religious right say a more fragmented relationship between faith and voting trends could make it more difficult to unite conservative Christians behind candidates now. A the absence of evangelical presidential favorite and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has surely dampened evangelicals' moods.

“Our American cause was and is rooted in ... Judeo-Christian faith heritage,” Reed told the crowd Friday. Voters could send Republicans to the Senate and White House only “by [God]'s power,” he said. Pawlenty and Miss. Gov. Haley Barbour echoed the message.

“We need to be a nation that turns towards God, not away from God,” Pawlenty said Friday evening to a packed ballroom, adding that “rights are endowed to us by our creator.” Earlier, Bachmann emphasized her position against same-sex marriage and Huntsman talked about his pro-life stance.

But few politicians made a direct references to how religion influences their beliefs. Romney, a Mormon, avoided direct references to God but said he was “united” with the crowd on social issues and called the economy a “moral crisis."

“I'm a Baptist. I'm a Christian and I believe in Christ. But I believe all people of faiths should practice their faith. Why say you are Jewish if you don't practice Judaism, or the same if you are Christian but don't talk about it?” said Joanna Freeborn, a Kansan who attended Friday with her granddaughter.

Freeborn, who usually votes Republican, said she was undecided about which candidate she favored for the Republican presidential nomination. Promises of lowered taxes, she said, mattered more to her than religion. Social issues, she said, also mattered to a lesser degree. “I don't agree with Mormonism, but I might vote for one,” Freeborn added.

A Pew Research Center survey released this week found that one of four people were less likely to support a presidential candidate who is a Mormon. Over a third of white evangelicals such as Freeborn wouldn't support a mormon, the poll found, the highest percentage of any religious group polled.

Another challenge for political candidates at this weekend's event was trying to win over Tea Party supporters and religious conservatives at the same time. Polls have shown that despite some shared positions, evangelicals and Tea Party supporters differ on many issues, including the importance of faith to their voting decisions. And across the board, polls have shown that the economy tops Americans' concerns.

In addition to politicians touting their conservative and religious credentials, the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference included panels on “Anti-Christian bigotry,” “Catholic Citizen Action,” and “Defeating Terrorism and Jihad.”

While the bigotry panel was largely a discussion of Christian influence on the nation's founding and the Catholic panel was notable as the coalition's attempt bring conservative Catholics into the fold, the terrorism discussion aroused controversy over religious liberties. While some panelists spoke out against a trend in state legislatures of measures to ban Sharia law, Frank Gaffney, a controversial former defense official and president of The Center for Security Policy, roused an audience when he warned of “stealth jihad” invading American institutions.

Shuffling from panels and the ballroom to listen to Republican leaders, Kathy Lore, a 72-year-old from Pennsylvania, said she was undecided on many issues, including who she would vote for in a Republican presidential primary. Lore added that she was leaning toward Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who also spoke Friday, because he is "very much a Christian."

“I'm pro-life, I go to a Methodist church, but I believe in the gospel, in the Bible. I don't believe in what one person or another tells me to think,” said Lore, 72. “I just came to learn.”

Where Food Is God

(An excerpt from the article)

American health food is usually said to have started with a Presbyterian minister: Sylvester Graham, who first lectured on the virtues of vegetarianism during the 1820s. (He is remembered as the namesake of the graham cracker.) It really got going in 1863 when Ellen White, a leader of several hundred Christians who called themselves the Seventh-day Adventists, said that God had revealed to her that "Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator." The Adventists became vegetarians, and by the turn of the century, two members, cereal moguls John Harvey Kellogg and C.W. Post (who once marketed cornflakes as "Elijah's Manna"), had laid the groundwork for the U.S. health-food industry. According to William Shurtleff and Akiko Aoyagi—authors of Bibliography of Soy Sprouts: 655 References From 3rd Century A.D. to 1991, among other soy-based titles —the Adventists popularized soymilk, soy cheese, and meat substitutes made from spun soy fibers. They also founded Worthington Foods, now America's largest manufacturer of veggie burgers and fake meat.

Initially, the emerging science of nutrition, more than spirituality, spread the good word about health food to the general population. Particularly in Southern California—which Shurtleff and Aoyagi identify as the health-food movement's most important early hub—adults embraced "living foods" with the goal of retaining a youthful vitality, inspired by best-sellers such as Gayelord Hauser's Look Younger, Live Longer. From the 1930s to the 1950s, California gave America everything from the grapefruit diet to the late fitness guru Jack LaLanne. Vitamins appeared on a U.S. health-food store shelf for the first time in San Diego—and they began spreading nationwide thanks to the groundbreaking research and vitamin evangelism of Henry Borsook, a Caltech biochemist.

Still, spiritual movements exerted a culinary influence. In 1930s San Francisco, a Seventh-day Adventist named Ella Brodersen ran what might have been the city's first vegetarian restaurant, the Health Way Cafeteria. Near Santa Barbara, Alan Hooker, who had moved to the town of Ojai to be near his guru, Yogi Krishnamurti, opened the Ranch House restaurant in 1956—which would lead some people to call him "the grandfather of California cuisine," a precursor to famous chefs such as Alice Waters and Wolfgang Puck. Los Angeles became home to yoga pioneer Paramahansa Yogananda. As Hollywood chef Akasha Richmond put it, "by the 1950s, it was the Mushroom Burger, served at Yogananda's SFR India Café, that made the veggie burger popular in Hollywood." Then came the California New Age food explosion—and Jim Baker.

Prepare to Meet Thy God

(Article)

Introduction

As we approach the last days of this earth’s history, it becomes increasingly important for us to prepare for what is to come. In Testimonies, vol. 9, page 11, Sister Ellen White tells us that “the final movements will be rapid ones”.

“We are living in the time of the end. The fast-fulfilling signs of the times declare that the coming of Christ is near at hand. The days in which we live are solemn and important. The Spirit of God is gradually but surely being withdrawn from the earth. Plaques and judgments are already falling upon the despisers of the grace of God. The calamities by land and sea, the unsettled state of society, the alarms of war, are portentous. They forecast approaching events of the greatest magnitude.

“The agencies of evil are combining their forces and consolidating. They are strengthening for the last great crisis. Great changes are soon to take place in our world, and the final movements will be rapid ones.” – Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol. 9, page 11.

1. Called to be Witnesses

What is the role of Seventh-day Adventists in these last days? Their role is to proclaim the most important last day message to a perishing world.

“In a special sense Seventh-day Adventists have been set in the world as watchmen and light bearers. To them has been entrusted the last warning for a perishing world. On them is shining wonderful light from the word of God. They have been given a work of the most solemn import—the proclamation of the first, second, and third angels’ messages. There is no other work of so great importance. They are to allow nothing else to absorb their attention.” – Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol. 9, page 19.

2. Prophecies are Being Fulfilled

Sister Ellen White pleads with believers to have faith in the Bible prophecies concerning the end time.

“Are we to wait until the fulfillment of the prophecies of the end before saying anything concerning them? Of what value will our words be then? Shall we wait until God’s judgments fall upon the transgressor before we tell him how to avoid them? Where is our faith in the word of God? Must we see things foretold come to pass before we will believe what He has said? In clear, distinct rays light has come to us, showing us that the great day of the Lord is near at hand, ‘even at the doors.’ Let us read and understand before it is too late.” – Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol. 9, page 20.

3. A Holy Life

How can we prepare for the last day events that are coming upon us?

“As the end draws near and the work of giving the last warning extends, it becomes more important for those who accept present truth to have a clear understanding of the nature and influence of the Testimonies, which God in His providence has linked with the work of the third angel’s message from its very rise.” – Testimonies, vol. 5, page 654.

As pointed out in the above paragraph, God’s people who are living at the time of the end will be able to participate in the work of the third angel only if they have been studying and practising the instructions and counsels which the Lord has given in the nine volumes of the “Testimonies for the Church”.

“It is not only by preaching the truth, not only by distributing literature, that we are to witness for God. Let us remember that a Christlike life is the most powerful argument that can be advanced in favor of Christianity, and that a cheap Christian character works more harm in the world than the character of a worldling. Not all the books written can serve the purpose of a holy life. Men will believe, not what the minister preaches, but what the church lives. Too often the influence of the sermon preached from the pulpit is counteracted by the sermon preached in the lives of those who claim to be advocates of truth.” – Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol. 9, page 21.

4. A Twofold Life

The devotional life of the remnant is a twofold life.

“Communion with God will ennoble the character and the life. Men will take knowledge of us, as of the first disciples, that we have been with Jesus. This will impart to the worker a power that nothing else can give. Of this power he must not allow himself to be deprived. We must live a twofold life—a life of thought and action, of silent prayer and earnest work.” – Ellen G. White, Ministry of Healing, page 512.

“Prayer and effort, effort and prayer, will be the business of your life. You must pray as though the efficiency and praise were all due to God, and labor as though duty were all your own.” – Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol. 4, page 538.

“No man is safe for a day or an hour without prayer.” – Ellen G. White, Great Controversy, page 530. “He who does nothing but pray will soon cease to pray.” – Ellen G. White, Steps to Christ, page 101.

5. Two Errors to be Avoided

While we are to have zeal for a holy life and also to be faithful, we are to avoid two errors, as brought out by Sister Ellen White.

“There are two errors against which the children of God—particularly those who have just come to trust in His grace—especially need to guard. The first, ... , is that of looking to their own works, trusting to anything they can do, to bring themselves into harmony with God. He who is trying to become holy by his own works in keeping the law, is attempting an impossibility. All that man can do without Christ is polluted with selfishness and sin. It is the grace of Christ alone, through faith, that can make us holy.

“The opposite and no less dangerous error is that belief in Christ releases men from keeping the law of God; that since by faith alone we become partakers of the grace of Christ, our works have nothing to do with our redemption.” – Ellen G. White, Steps to Christ, pages 59, 60.

Sister Ellen White explains further:

“We do not earn salvation by our obedience; for salvation is the free gift of God, to be received by faith. But obedience is the fruit of faith. ‘Ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him.’ 1 John 3:5, 6. Here is the true test. If we abide in Christ, if the love of God dwells in us, our feelings, our thoughts, our purposes, our actions, will be in harmony with the will of God as expressed in the precepts of His holy law. ‘Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.’ 1 John 3:7. Righteousness is defined by the standard of God’s holy law, as expressed in the ten precepts given on Sinai.

“That so-called faith in Christ which professes to release men from the obligation of obedience to God, is not faith, but presumption. ‘By grace are ye saved through faith.’ But ‘faith, if it hath not works, is dead.’ Ephesians 2:8; James 2:17. Jesus said of Himself before He came to earth, ‘I delight to do Thy will, O My God: yea, Thy law is within My heart.’ Psalm 40:8. And just before He ascended again to heaven He declared, ‘I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love.’ John 15:10. The scripture says, ‘Hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments .... He that saith he abideth in Him ought also so to walk even as He walked.’ 1 John 2:3-6. ‘Because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps.’ 1 Peter 2:21.

“The condition of eternal life is now just what it always has been,—just what it was in Paradise before the fall of our first parents,—perfect obedience to the law of God, perfect righteousness. If eternal life were granted on any condition short of this, then the happiness of the whole universe would be imperiled. The way would be open for sin, with all its train of woe and misery, to be immortalized.” – Ellen G. White, Steps to Christ, pages 61, 62.

6. The Necessity of Bible Study

In preparing for the last days, nothing can take the place of diligent and regular Bible study.

“Christians should be preparing for what is to soon to break upon the world as an overwhelming surprise, and this preparation they should make by diligently studying the Word of God and striving to conform their lives to its precepts.” – Ellen G. White, Prophets and Kings, page 626.

“None but those who have fortified the mind with the truths of the Bible will stand through the last great conflict.” – Ellen G. White, Great Controversy, pages 593, 594.

“Our people need to understand the oracles of God; they need to have a systematic knowledge of the principles of revealed truth, which will fit them for what is coming upon the earth and prevent them from being carried about by every wind of doctrine.” – Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol. 5, page 273.

“The time will come when many will be deprived of the written Word. But if this Word is printed in the memory, no one can take it from us.” – Ellen G. White, Manuscript Releases, vol. 20, page 64.

7. Preparing for Last Day Events

We are to live as if each day might be our last.

“We should watch and work and pray as though this were the last day that would be granted us.” – Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol. 5, page 200.

“Each morning consecrate yourselves and your children to God for that day. Make no calculation for months or years; these are not yours. One brief day is given you. As if it were your last on earth, work during its hours for the Master. Lay all your plans before God, to be carried out or given up, as His providence shall indicate.” – Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol. 7, page 44.

Although we are to live as if each day might be our last, it does not mean that we no longer need to pay attention to our daily work, activities, and responsibilities.

“Christ says, ‘Occupy till I come’ [Luke 19:13]. It may be but a few years until our life’s history shall close, but we must occupy till then.” – Ellen G. White, Review and Herald, April 21, 1896.

“Christ declared that when He comes some of His waiting people will be engaged in business transactions. Some will be sowing in the field, others reaping and gathering in the harvest, and others grinding at the mill. It is not God’s will that His elect shall abandon life’s duties and responsibilities and give themselves up to idle contemplation, living in a religious dream.” – Ellen G. White, Manuscript, 26, 1901.

Conclusion

Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is coming again very soon, as the signs foretell. Let us continue to use the opportunities which God is providing us to do more earnest work for Him.

“A great work must be done all through the world, and let no one conclude that because the end is near there is no need of special effort to build up the various institutions as the cause shall demand. .... When the Lord shall bid us make no further effort to build meetinghouses and establish schools, sanitariums and publishing institutions, it will be time for us to fold our hands and let the Lord close up the work, but now is our opportunity to show our zeal for God and our love for humanity.” – Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol. 6, page 440.

May the Lord bless you richly.

Prayer: “Our Father in heaven, thank You for giving us the opportunity to prepare for the soon coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Please help us to continue to be faithful to You, especially in these last days. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Questions for Thought:

1. What are two errors to be avoided in regard to righteousness by faith?
2. What is God’s will for us in these last days?

THE NAME - Seventh Day Adventist:

Photo (Courtesy) http://mcnairycountynews.com/page3/page20/page20.html

There is a big discussion amongst those who have left the Seventh Day Adventist Church as to what they should call themselves? Many believe they MUST call themselves Seventh Day Adventists, others don't know what to call themselves. I think this verse from Isaiah sheds some much needed light on the subject:"I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts...And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord God shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name." Isaiah 65:2, 15.

And...."We are not saved as a sect; no denominational name has any virtue to bring us into favor with God. We are saved individually as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ." -RH 02/10/1891.

Friends, sadly, the NAME - Seventh Day Adventists does not mean TODAY what it meant 100 years ago. There are many words that no longer mean what they used to....think about it - the word "GAY" - it used to describe someone who was HAPPY....today, it commonly describes a HOMOSEXUAL. The meaning of man words change over time. So today, the name "Seventh Day Adventists" no longer means what it used to mean.
"For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written." Romans 2:24. Truly, the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of Seventh Day Adventists. Abortions are preformed in SDA hospitals. http://www.thenarrowwayministries.org/DownloadFile.asp?FileName=Abortion.pdf
The world is proclaiming the inconsistencies - http://onfaith.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/undergod/2011/01/adventists_and_abortion.html

We are called to be loyal to the TRUTH, not to a CHURCH....sadly, history has taught the same story over and over again...that Churches eventually leave the Truth....when that happens, God's people need to stay with the Truth and not with the Church.

Churches like businesses, change ownerships all the time...yet they keep the same name. That is what has happened with the SDA Church. It has become a business, and has been sold to "new owners"...all the while still being called by the same name.

So friend, are you going to remain loyal to the Truth, or to a church that blasphemes the name of God?

A Great Reformation?

The enemy of souls has sought to bring in the supposition that a great reformation was to take place among Seventh-day Adventists, and that this reformation would consist in giving up the doctrines which stand as the pillars of our faith, and engaging in a process of reorganization. Were this reformation to take place, what would result? The principles of truth that God in His wisdom has given to the remnant church, would be discarded. Our religion would be changed. The fundamental principles that have sustained the work for the last fifty years would be accounted as error. A new organization would be established. Books of a new order would be written. A system of intellectual philosophy would be introduced. The founders of this system would go into the cities, and do a wonderful work. The Sabbath of course, would be lightly regarded, as also the God who created it. Nothing would be allowed to stand in the way of the new movement. The leaders would teach that virtue is better than vice, but God being removed, they would place their dependence on human power, which, without God, is worthless. Their foundation would be built on the sand, and storm and tempest would sweep away the structure.

Hiring in U.S. Slowed in May With 54,000 Jobs Added

By CATHERINE RAMPELL
Published: June 3, 2011

After several months of strong job growth, hiring in the United States slowed sharply in May, suggesting the economy is running out of steam once again.

The Labor Department reported on Friday that the nation added 54,000 nonfarm payroll jobs last month, after an increase of about 220,000 jobs in each of the three previous months. May’s job gain was about a third of what economists had been forecasting.

The unemployment rate ticked up to 9.1 percent from 9.0 percent in April.

“The economy clearly just hit a brick wall,” said Paul Ashworth, chief United States economist at Capital Economics. “It’s almost as if it came to a complete standstill.”

Friday’s dismal job numbers capped a week of disappointing economic news on manufacturing, housing and retail activity. Pressure is now mounting on the Obama administration and Congress to delay deficit-reduction measures, which economists think will put a further drag on the fragile recovery. Already liberal groups have renewed their calls for more aid to the states and more aggressive action from the Federal Reserve — even as a warning from Moody’s about the country’s sterling credit rating has galvanized Republican support for spending cuts.

In some ways the moment is reminiscent of last spring, when the economy also braked abruptly just as it seemed to be gaining momentum. At the time, the slowdown was attributed to worries over the European debt crisis, just as Friday’s numbers have been attributed in part to temporary stresses from higher energy prices and natural disasters. Last year’s downshift was ultimately followed by additional federal spending and another round of asset purchases by the Federal Reserve.

The latest jobs numbers sent markets tumbling, with oil prices and bond yields declining. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 133 points, or 1.1 percent, within minutes after the opening bell, though stocks later recovered some of those losses.

The biggest employment gains were in professional and business services and in health care services, which grew steadily even during the recession.

State and local governments, struggling with severe budget shortfalls, continued to shed jobs. They are expected to keep laying off workers for months to come. Private companies added jobs, but the pace of hiring fell to its lowest level in a year.

And there are signs that hiring problems may persist.

One particularly unsettling figure in Friday’s report was in hiring for temporary help services. Temp hiring is considering a bellwether for broader hiring, since employers often try out temporary employees when considering whether to take on additional permanent staffers. Employment in temporary help services was essentially unchanged in May, however.

Another leading indicator — the length of the workweek — was also disappointing. Usually businesses start working their existing employees harder and longer before hiring more workers. But the average workweek did not budge in May, a factor that does not bode well for the many workers waiting on the sidelines.

Manufacturing employers delivered another blow to the economy by ending their six-month streak of continued job gains. Manufacturing companies eliminated 5,000 jobs over all in May.

“They were our bright spot for so many months,” Ms. Boushey said. “They were what was pulling the economy forward.”

While any job gains at all are welcome, the pace of job growth thus far has been too slow to reverse much of the damage wrought by the Great Recession, which has left nearly 14 million unemployed workers in its wake. For the last few months economists had been predicting that the economy was finally gathering steam and that a sharper bounce-back was imminent, only to be disappointed again and again.

The lackluster employment figures for May, as in months past, may be partly attributable to temporary factors, like the automotive supply chain disruption caused by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and higher oil prices caused by unrest in the Middle East.

Economists have been hopeful that as these troubles pass, a robust recovery will finally burrow out from beneath the rubble.

“I do think there’s more strength in the economy than recent numbers have been indicating,” said Augustine Faucher, director of macroeconomics at Moody’s Analytics. “I realize that’s not much consolation for people who are already out of work.”

The problem, of course, is that this recovery has been unusually frail; usually a sharp recession like the one that began in 2007 is followed by an equally sharp recovery, whereas this time growth has been very slow. Had the underlying economy been stronger, a shock like the sudden rise in energy prices this spring might not have been so troubling.

“You are always going to have some good things and some bad things that happen, always,” said Neal Soss, chief economist at Credit Suisse. “Why do the downs feel so much more threatening these days? Because economic growth should be much faster. Any little adversity feels much worse when growth is so much closer to zero.”

While most economic analysts do not believe that the economy will slide back into a recession — which would technically mean that the economy would start shrinking again — they acknowledge that with such low levels of hiring, the recovery is barely perceptible to many Americans. The jobs deficit has not gotten nearly as much political attention as the nation’s unsustainable fiscal deficit, however.

“Living here in Washington, in the past few weeks there has been all this talk about deficits and the debt ceiling as though that were the biggest problem right now,” said Heather Boushey, a senior economist at the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization. “My fervent hope is that this shocks policy makers into realizing the most urgent problem in front of us right now is jobs.”

Nearly six million workers have been out of a job for more than six months — and are still waiting for the recovery to reach them.

“There are just so many people jumping around with great specialized résumés and willing to work for nothing,” said Bob Hiller, 64, an architect in Tucson who was laid off in October 2009. “It’s hard to compete.”

Mr. Hiller’s jobless benefits will soon run out because Arizona’s Legislature never updated a state law that would allow workers to receive more federal money. Unable to find work, he is trying to start a new architectural consulting business to help older people stay in their homes through accommodative renovations.

“Everybody seems to think it’s a great idea and that I should do it,” he said, “but it’s hard to take it to the next level when I barely have enough money to keep the lights on.”

Recently-Released Documents Reveal Obama Administration’s Complicity in Deception about Auto Bailout

by Hans Bader on June 2, 2011

in Blog,Features

Obama Administration officials had advance notice that General Motors would run deceptive ads claiming to have paid taxpayers back for its bailout, and did not veto or object to those ads despite the opportunity to do so. Only later did Administration officials distance themselves from those deceptive claims, and they did so only after the falsity of those claims became so obvious to the public that they could no longer be parroted. Treasury Secretary Geithner had parroted those deceptive claims, which then drew criticism from the TARP inspector general, members of Congress, and financial reporters. Geithner publicly repeated GM’s deceptive claims, even though the Treasury Department had weeks in which to review GM’s claims and discover their inaccuracy.

Treasury Department Documents released last week in response to a think-tank’s Freedom of Information Act request make this clear. Those documents illustrate that GM and the Obama Administration coordinated GM’s PR strategy regarding the company’s controversial TV and print ad campaign in 2010, in which the car maker misleadingly claimed to have repaid what it received from taxpayers. In those ads, GM’s then-CEO, Ed Whitacre, claimed GM had already repaid its government bailout loan “in full, with interest, five years ahead of schedule.”

In May 2010, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) filed a deceptive advertising complaint with the FTC, and GM shortly thereafter stopped running the ads. CEI also filed a Freedom of Information request with Treasury for documents on the ad campaign. Those documents were finally released late last month, after a year of delay – far beyond the 20-day legal deadline for responding to FOIA requests.

CEI General Counsel Sam Kazman laments that “the US Treasury Department aided General Motors in its fraudulent claim that it fully repaid its government loans,” pointing out that “the detailed nature of their cooperation is demonstrated in the documents that the Department has finally produced, 12 long months after our original request. Now, the Treasury Department is re-enacting this smoke-and-mirrors routine on behalf of Chrysler,” Kazman observed.

The documents show GM coordinating PR strategy with the Obama Administration more than three weeks before launching the campaign. The White House received some of those GM materials at least two weeks before the ad campaign began. The Treasury Department delayed in responding to CEI’s FOIA request until after GM and Chrysler’s profits temporarily spiked, leading to the Administration’s current PR campaign touting the alleged “success” of the auto bailout. For example, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner wrote a Washington Post Op-Ed on June 1, 2011 with a similarly-misleading statement that Chrysler had repaid its government loans. On June 3, Obama himself will give a speech in Toledo, Ohio defending the auto bailout.

The communications between the Treasury, the White House, and GM on this PR effort were extensive. Starting on March 30, 2010, Brian Deese from the Executive Office of the President and many Treasury Department officials began exchanging emails related to the announcement. (See pages 55-59, 97-102.) These emails included draft schedules, draft remarks to be given by GM CEO Ed Whitacre, and draft press releases from both GM and the Treasury Department. See pp. 9-14; 18-24; 36-39; 83-96.

The Treasury Department saw the misleading advertisements GM was planning to make in advance, and did not object, despite having ample opportunity to object.

Indeed, Treasury Secretary Geithner issued a statement at the start of GM’s ad campaign, trumpeting its misleading claims, crowing that “GM had repaid in full the $4.7 billion balance it owed under the government’s Trouble Asset Relief Program.” But this so-called “repayment” was just a deceptive accounting trick. GM used government bailout money to make the “repayment.” As the Washington Examiner noted, Geithner was endorsing a “blatant misrepresentation.”

More importantly, this so-called “repayment” was just a drop in the bucket compared to what GM has received from taxpayers. The federal government had yet to recover the lion’s share of the more than $50 billion it loaned the company. Why? Because that $50 billion was mostly “converted into stock held by the Treasury Department” – stock worth far less than the billions the federal government injected into the company.

These claims were deeply misleading, as Senator Charles Grassley and the government’s own TARP Inspector General noted. GM’s statement that “We have repaid our government loans in full, with interest” was misleading,“according to Neil Barofsky, inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program . . . ‘the source of funds for these quality [debt] payments will be other TARP funds currently held in an escrow account.” Senator Grassley noted that “‘TARP loans were not repaid from money GM is earning selling cars, as GM and the administration have claimed in their speeches, press releases and television commercials.’”

Eventually, financial reporters for newspapers like the New York Times and San Francisco Chronicle ridiculed these false claims. Gretchen Morgenson of the Times pointed out that “the company simply used other funds held by the Treasury to pay off its original loan.” Kathleen Pender of the Chronicle noted that “GM repaid its government loan with other government money.” The Washington Times observed that “General Motors Lost $3.4 billion” just before running the ad; “GM specifically used funds it received from the Troubled Asset Relief Program to pay off the government loan.”

Only after the falsity of GM’s claims became obvious to the general public did some Administration officials distance themselves from them. An April 29 email shows Treasury trying to “prepare a response today” to escalating criticism. (See pg. 11) On May 10, 2010, former auto czar Steve Rattner publicly admitted that “GM may have slightly elasticized the reality of things” in its claims of repayment. Treasury officials privately began to look for ways to respond to this reality. Rattner’s successor, Ron Bloom, wanted “a couple bullet points… for response if this comes up.” (See pp. 61-62.)

The Treasury Department’s role in facilitating GM’s deception may be far greater than the documents reveal, because the Treasury Department withheld some of the documents covered by the FOIA request, including portions of documents shedding light on White House involvement. For example, a blacked out item in the Treasury document release is a March 30 email from Brian Deese in the Executive Office regarding GM’s upcoming campaign. All of its content was blacked out except for the opening words, “Hi guys.” (See pages 58-59)

The Treasury Department waited until after the automakers’ finances had temporarily improved to produce the documents. GM’s finances have been temporarily propped up by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami that ravaged Toyota, and by earlier erroneous claims that Toyota’s automobiles were unsafe. Its profits have also been artificially puffed up by massive deferral of billions of dollars in growing UAW pension obligations. Moreover, as Conn Carroll notes in the Washington Examiner, Chrysler recent auto bailout pay back is in large measure fake.

As journalist Mickey Kaus has noted, “Sales and prices are up recently in part only because competing Japanese car suppliers have been crippled by the earthquake and tsunami. GM’s stock fell today and is still below the initial IPO price.”

Before that, GM’s finances were temporarily buoyed by bad PR regarding Toyota’s alleged safety defects in its cars, which turned out to be largely bogus. (The Toyota crashes turned out to have been caused by driver error, not manufacturing defects).

These things temporarily drove buyers away from Toyota to GM and Chrysler, artificially pumping up their profits. But massive earthquakes and Tsunamis like the one that hit Japan occur there only once or twice a century, and can’t keep GM going in the long run: “Car sales sputtered in May, slumping to levels that were much lower than expected as higher vehicle prices led consumers to put off purchases in the face of a weakening economy. Tightening supplies of vehicles after the Japan earthquake emboldened many companies . . . to raise car and truck prices, a strategy that analysts and investors said had backfired. U.S. automakers” like GM “reported sales on Wednesday that fell short of expectations as the industry experienced its lowest sales rate in eight months.”

GM stock is worth money partly because its government ownership stake allows it to claim up to $45 billion in tax savings that it would otherwise have had to forfeit as a result of its bankruptcy. GM is also receiving lots of taxpayer subsidies for its Chevy Volt, despite revelations that it lied about that car, which it was trumpeting in a “publicity stunt” to curry favor with politicians crusading against global warming.

GM still owes taxpayers at least $29.4 billion, and its finance arm, GMAC, owes taxpayers billions more. In a sense, taxpayers lost money on the sale of some of the government’s shares in General Motors in a 2010 IPO that was touted by government officials. (They got at least $9 billion less for the stock that was sold in the IPO than taxpayers originally paid for that stock.)

Even Kaus, who grudgingly supported the bailouts, thinks that people who bought GM stock were “suckers,” since GM faces hidden perils, still has too much red tape and inefficiency, lacks “effective internal controls,” and is the beneficiary of accounting gimmicks and unrealistic assumptions about its future market share.

In addition to the $50 billion, GM received billions in additional handouts through programs like the extraordinarily wasteful Cash for Clunkers (which cost taxpayers and used-car and car-parts businesses billions), and $17 billion given to its finance arm, GMAC.

GM might never have needed a bailout if it had just received relief from harmful regulations such as CAFE rules (which wipe out at least 50,000 jobs). It might have survived despite GM’s self-inflicted wounds from poor management, excessive wages and gold-plated union benefits (worth up to $70 an hour), and rigid union work rules.

Obama’s car czar left most of those wasteful work rules and excessive benefits intact, and gave the UAW much of General Motors’ stock, even though the UAW helped bankrupt the company, and the company has value today because the taxpayers pumped billions into the company (and engineered the wiping out of General Motors’ bondholders, some of whom were non-union employees who had invested their life savings in the company).

Veteran political commentator Michael Barone called the Obama administration’s treatment of Chrysler and GM bondholders “gangster government.” GMU law professor Todd Zywicki called it an attack on “the rule of law.” Such treatment may well discourage investors from investing in industrial companies in the future, reducing job creation and investment in the American economy.

QE2 Didn't Help the Economic Recovery - Why Would QE3?

by: Cullen Roche June 2, 2011

We’re now nearing the end of QE2 and some concrete conclusions can be made. I’ll save my overall analysis of the program until after its conclusion, but I think the impact of QE2 can be pretty much summed up with the following chart.

Economic growth peaked with QE2′s inception
Real GDP peaked as soon as QE2 began. Now, this shouldn’t be shocking to anyone who has been reading pragcap over the duration of this program. From its onset I said QE2 would do nothing for the real economy. In fact, operationally, it could do nothing. But its impacts actually appear to have been damaging to bottom line growth. How so? QE2 helped contribute to a massive surge in speculation in commodity prices.

You see, QE2 didn’t monetize anything. It didn’t cause the money supply to explode. It didn’t really do anything except cause a great deal of confusion and generate an enormous amount of speculation in financial markets that now appears to be contributing to turmoil and strife around the globe. Operationally, it is no different than what the Fed does at the short end when they implement monetary policy. The important distinction, however, is that this policy was implemented incorrectly. Instead of targeting price they targeted size. And the results in the bond market speak for themselves. Rates have meandered up and down and up and down without a care in the world for the Fed’s $600B purchase program. In other words, the program had no impact on rates.

Aside from targeting rates, the program was intended to generate a portfolio rebalancing effect. I won’t repeat the comments I’ve made in the past or those of Richard Koo, but the portfolio rebalancing effect is essentially a form of putting the cart before the horse. Creating nominal wealth without an accompanying real effect that results in real economic growth is very misguided and the worst form of ponzi finance.

Where we saw a real impact was in commodity prices, general price speculation and the financing pyramid. I believe the BOJ has written the finest piece of research detailing this speculative effect. The pass through effect from commodity prices is a contributing factor in the declining real GDP. Inflation has risen marginally due to commodity price increases and the underlying real economy has remained stagnant. In other words, QE2 caused margin compression without helping spur growth. This helped create the disequilibrium I have often discussed. The result is the current air pocket in the economy.

Critics of this analysis are likely to claim that we don’t know what would have happened to the economy without QE2. This is true of course. What we do know is that the economy was growing at 3.3% at the time QE2 was initiated, ISM surged to 57 just days after the announcement and climbed to 58 as the program was beginning. In other words, we can confirm, definitively that the economy wasn’t collapsing as QE2 was beginning, but weakened as the program progressed.

So, the only question left is – if the evidence appears to point to the fact that QE2 didn’t help the economic recovery then why in the world would anyone even consider QE3?

Looking back at the Obama 'Recovery'

In February 2009, Democrats in Congress passed a $787 billion stimulus bill requested by President Obama...

*In June 2009 the cash for clunkers program was implemented which cost $3 billion. It was a trade in program in which the new car should have had a federal fuel-economy rating that was at least 4 mpg better than the old car traded in to qualify for a $3,500 voucher, or was rated at least 10 mpg better to get the maximum payment of $4,500. Thousands of functional used cars were destroyed in the process.

**In 2010, the Federal Reserve launched the quantitative easing 2, or QE2 - It has cost American Taxpayers $600 billion. It was supposed to rescue the economy.

On Dec. 15 2010, The U.S. Senate passed an $858 billion tax-cut plan, giving bipartisan endorsement to an agreement crafted by President Barack Obama and Republicans that extends Bush-era reductions for all income levels.

And, what have we got to show for it?

Surely not JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.

History of the Jesuits

History of the Jesuits
by
Dr. J. A. Wylie LL.D.,

Excerpted from the massive 2 vol. History of Protestantism.

Don Inigo Lopez de Recalde, the Ignatius Loyola of history, was the founder of the Order of Jesus, or the Jesuits. His birth was nearly contemporaneous with that of Luther. He was the youngest son of one of the highest Spanish grandees, and was born in his father’s Castle of Loyola, in the province of Guipuzcoa, in 1491. His youth was passed at the splendid and luxurious comfort of Ferdinand the Catholic. Spain at that time was fighting to expel the Moors, whose presence on her soil she accounted at once an insult to her independence and an affront to her faith. She was ending the conflict in Spain, but continuing it in Africa. The naturally ardent soul of Ignatius was set on fire by the religious fervor around him. He grew weary of the gaieties and frivolities of the court; nor could even the dalliances and adventures of knight-errantry satisfy him. He thirsted to earn renown on the field of arms. Embarking in the war which at that time engaged the religious enthusiasm and military chivalry of his countrymen, he soon distinguished himself by his feats of daring. Ignatius was bidding fair to take a high place among warriors, and transmit to posterity a name encompassed with the halo of military glory—but with that halo only. At this stage of his career an incident befell him which cut short his exploits on the battlefield, and transferred his enthusiasm and chivalry to another sphere.

They shall deliver neither sons nor daughters

Ezekiel 14

1Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.

2And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

3Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?

4Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;

5That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.

6Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

7For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:

8And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

9And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.

10And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity: the punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh unto him;

11That the house of Israel may go no more astray from me, neither be polluted any more with all their transgressions; but that they may be my people, and I may be their God, saith the Lord GOD.

12The word of the LORD came again to me, saying,

13Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:

14Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.

15If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts:

16Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate.

17Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it:

18Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves.

19Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast:

20Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

21For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?

22Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.

23And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.

Mystery Religions - The Externalization of the Hierarchy

Uploaded by anonymoustruther2 on Jan 2, 2011

Alice Bailey states in her book, 'The Externalisation of the Hierarchy', that the world must be united regionally before it can be united into one.
One World Government -- the only answer to man's problems.
One World Economy and a One World Religion -- Man's evil actions historically are ascribed to his divisions into many different religions.

Therefore, much emphasis is being laid on the re-uniting into one religion. The current Ecumenical Movement is leading the charge toward this all-important goal. In a seminar held in Boston in August, 1991, the current New England Director of the Theosophical Society stated that, at the proper moment in world history the Roman Catholic Pope would travel to Jerusalem to address a world-wide religious conference. In his speech, he would declare all the world's religions to be united into One. Thus, Alice Bailey's Plan, stated almost 50 years ago, would be realized, i.e., that the Great One would reinstate the Ancient Mysteries Religion as the New World Order Religion. "These Mysteries, when restored, will unify all faiths."
(Externalisation of the Hierarchy, p. 573, written in 1946).

Many of those "truth teachers" are puppets for the Illuminati Elite, they are externalizing their dogma to the public, so when the chaos is created everyone will be willing to accept the REAL New World Order.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin - Father of the New Age Movement

Jesuit Priest, Fr Pierre Teilhard De Chardin S.J.: Father of the New Age Movement

The aim of the article below is to, hopefully, highlight just a few of the connections between the Vatican, the New Age movement, the United Nations and the wider New World Order agenda by taking a look at palaeontologist and French Jesuit, Catholic, priest, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

In the influential and very successful book "The Aquarian Conspiracy", by Marilyn Ferguson, a survey of new agers showed that the leading influence on their spiritual 'awakening' was Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. The book itself was described as a "handbook for the new age" that "sought a paradigm shift in global consciousness".

Quelle Surprise! Consumer Confidence Falls on Oil Prices, Housing, Job Outlook

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Is the latest consumer confidence release yet another example of elite disconnect? One of the things that has become striking is the degree to which the chattering classes in New York and Washington DC seem utterly unaware of what is happening in the rest of the country. New York City is doing reasonably well based on the heroic efforts by the officialdom to prop up the major capital markets firm; DC is recession immune and more recently awash in lobbying funds. The influences range from visual signals (I had a friend visiting from Boston remark how striking it was that there were so few shuttered storefronts here in NYC) to continued Administration cheerleading (a constant since the 2009 bank stress tests). And since major media stories about the economy are driven by sources in these two cities, it feeds into business reporting.

We’ve had seven weeks of initial jobless claims over 400,000, unemployment stable only by virtue of more exits from the workforce, high oil prices, rising food prices, and housing prices in pretty much every area of the US continuing to fall with no prospect of relief. The Bloomberg story on the latest consumer confidence figure managed to separate the degree of the miss by supposed experts. This bit comes a full sixteen paragraphs into the story:

Estimates for consumer confidence ranged from 60 to 71 in the Bloomberg survey of 68 economists. The measure averaged 98 during the expansion that ended in December 2007.

This is the start of the story:

Consumer sentiment unexpectedly decreased in May to the lowest level in six months as Americans grew concerned over the outlook for jobs and the economy, while a measure of home prices dropped to a nine-year low.

The Conference Board’s confidence index dropped to 60.8 from a revised 66 reading in April, figures from the New York- based private research group showed today. Home prices decreased 5.1 percent in the first quarter from the same time in 2010, according to data from S&P/Case-Shiller. A separate report today showed manufacturing cooled.

The release came in at the very bottom of the estimates made by a very large number of economists (a more typical Bloomberg survey is in the teens to twenties). So the gap between the forecasts and the results points to a serious miss. And note weakening home prices aren’t a surprise; these results, and the continued pushing out the time frame for “when is housing going to bottom” which was deemed to be 2011 but the seers are now moving to 2012, have been in the news for weeks. Yet we see more optimism in the story:

“The economy has slipped into a soft patch,” said Michael Feroli, chief U.S. economist at JPMorgan Chase & Co. in New York. “In the second half, we’ll do better than we’ve been doing. As economic activity picks up, the labor market will improve as well.”

With Federal, state, and local budget cuts in the offing, what in the private sector can compensate? A weakening dollar will help, but it will take time for manufacturing to return to the US, and in the meantime, a soft dollar (ex other factors) will make oil prices worse, putting more immediate pressure on consumer budgets and mood.

Even So, Come Lord Jesus!

Even So, Come Lord Jesus!

"And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city."
Genesis 11:5-8

"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie."
Revelation 22:13-15

"Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen."
Revelation 1:7

"He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus."
Revelation 22:20

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will once again examine the multitude of indicators that declare we are rapidly moving ever closer to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Although most people have grown attached to this world and do not want to believe that it could ever end, we know that the situation on this planet continues to deteriorate and that our God has something far better prepared for His people.

As we progress through time, fewer and fewer people are still faithfully awaiting the return of Jesus Christ. The skeptics tell us we are foolish. After all, it has been over two thousand years since Jesus promised to return, and he still has not done so. However, it is important to remember that there were prophecies of Christ's first coming dating all the way back to the book of Genesis. By the time Jesus was finally born, very few people were still waiting for him to arrive. Perhaps this is the reason Jesus asked in Luke 18:8, "Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?"

Yes, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, is going to return, and I believe it will be very soon. The signs are all around us and the conditions of the end times which Jesus spoke of are coming to pass before our very eyes. As we watch and pray and see the circumstances of this world grow worse by the day, the cry of God's people is "Even so, come, Lord Jesus."

The Rising One World Government!

Throughout the history of the world, there have been an uncountable number of wars and numerous disasters that have taken many lives. After a war or catastrophic event, there is often a call for the world to unite to prevent such disasters in the future. For example, after the first World War, the League of Nations was formed. After World War II, we saw the establishment of the United Nations. The first such call for world unity, however, is recorded in the book of Genesis.

Knowing full well that God had recently destroyed the entire earth with a flood, the population of the world banded together and began to build a city with a tower reaching unto the heavens. They reasoned amongst themselves that if God ever sent another flood, their tower would save them from being wiped out. When God saw what the people reasoned in their hearts to do, he was sorely displeased and confounded their languages. Since the people could no longer understand each other, they were unable to complete their Tower of Babel, and they were scattered all over the planet. The Bible also tells us that God divided the earth in the days of Peleg. Scientists would later refer to that event as the continental drift.

The Tower of Babel was the first ever attempt at a one world government. God put a stop to it because He understands that the hearts of men are evil by nature, and if the whole world was united together, it would only be a short amount of time before every man, woman, and child was under bondage and tyranny. It was the historian and writer Sir John Dalberg-Acton who said, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men." (1) Therein lies the reason why Satan wants a one world government, for if one were established, it would not be difficult for him to seize control.

The push for a global one world government continues to this day. In fact, the United Nations now claims 192 sovereign state nations as members of its organization. While the United Nations serves an umbrella group encompassing the entire world, there are other treaties and alliances being formed to unite countries in a closer tight-knit fashion. Europe has their European Union, which has united twenty-seven nations together. A recent report from Al Arabiya News indicates that Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria are planning to establish a common visa system. (2) A secret cable from the Ottawa Embassy in Ottawa, Canada, and dated January 28, 2005, discusses the possibility of a "North American Integration," which would bring together Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The recently leaked-out document states, "An incremental and pragmatic package of tasks for a new North American Initiative (NAI) will likely gain the most support among Canadian policymakers. Our research leads us to conclude that such a package should tackle both 'security' and 'prosperity goals.' This fits the recommendations of Canadian economists who have assessed the options for continental integration. While in principle many of them support more ambitious integration goals, like a custom union/single market and/or single currency, most believe the incremental approach is most appropriate at this time, and all agree that it helps pave the way to these goals if and when North Americans choose to pursue them." (3) In other words, they want to unite the North American nations gradually so that citizens of each nation will be more willing to accept an unified economy and currency.

As we watch countries around the world unite, I can't help but think back to my childhood when I would assemble jigsaw puzzles. I would put pieces together in clumps, and those clumps would get bigger and bigger as I went along. Finally, I would put all of the pieces together and the puzzle would be completed. We are seeing countries clumped together now. Eventually they will want to connect all of the pieces or clumps, and what they would hope to have at that point is a one world government.

The people who are working behind the scenes to establish a one world government include not only the United Nations, but groups such as the Council on Foreign Relations, or CFR. My father once stood outside their building located at 58 East 68th Street in New York City. Two women came out of the building under the guise of a smoking break, but undoubtedly they wanted to see what my parents and the people who were with them were up to. My father struck up a conversation with them and asked the question, "What is your agenda?" One of the women replied, "To ensure that the United States is not isolationist." What is isolationism? According to one dictionary definition, isolationism is "the policy or doctrine of isolating one's country from the affairs of other nations by declining to enter into alliances, foreign economic commitments, international agreements, etc., seeking to devote the entire efforts of one's country to its own advancement and remain at peace by avoiding foreign entanglements and responsibilities." (4) If we read between the lines, it is easy to see that the Council on Foreign Relations exists to make sure that the United States takes its place in the one world government system, which they are attempting to install.

While most members of the organization are elitists not commonly known by the average person, some members of the group are quite famous. The official CFR roster includes names such as former president of the United States Bill Clinton, actress Angelina Jolie, actor Richard Dreyfuss, broadcast journalist Barbara Walters, and news anchor Tom Brokaw. (5)

In order to successfully bring forth a global one world government, you must indoctrinate children from a very young age on the virtues of such a system. It was Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Communist Party, who once said, "Give me just one generation of youth, and I'll transform the whole world." (6) When children go to school, their fertile young minds are often filled with globalist propaganda. In fact, one of the most bone-chilling quotes I've ever read came from a professor, known as Dr. Chester M. Pierce from Harvard University, who stated, "Every child in America entering school at the age of five is mentally ill because he comes to school with certain allegiances to our founding fathers, toward our elected officials, toward his parents, toward a belief in a supernatural being, and toward the sovereignty of this nation as a separate entity. It's up to you as teachers to make all these sick children well - by creating the international child of the future." (7)

The good news is that all efforts to set up a one world government will fail. Ultimately, the biggest obstacle preventing Satan's plans from reaching fruition is the existence of God's children who will always refuse to go along with Satan's evil system. In Daniel 2:44 we read, "And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever."

Did Obama Get Osama?

On the evening of May 1, 2011, Barack Obama announced that the infamous terrorist known as Osama bin Laden was shot and killed at a compound located in Abbottabad, Pakistan. According to the official story, bin Laden was killed by an elite team of Navy Seals known as Team Six. (8) They say they then quickly identified the body by a variety of means, including a DNA test. (9) After supposedly verifying the identity of the man they shot and killed, bin Laden was quickly given a water burial in the North Arabian Sea. (10)

The mission, which was code-named Operation Neptune Spear, seems to be covered in a shroud of secrecy. From the very outset, many of the details fed to the public by the government and the media were contradictory, and what really happened that evening in Abbottabad has been very difficult to ascertain.

While the United States' government claims that they quickly buried Osama bin Laden at sea because it is customary in Islam for a body to be buried within twenty-four hours of death, they seemed ignorant of the fact that Islam generally considers burial at sea to be a disgrace unless there are absolutely no other options. A cleric from Egypt, known as Ahmad al-Tayeb, claims that bin Laden's sea burial "runs contrary to the principles of Islamic laws, religious values, and humanitarian customs." (11) Why would the government bother to abide by one Islamic law while simultaneously violating another?

To date the Obama Administration has offered no evidence whatsoever that Osama bin Laden was actually killed when they said he was and in the manner that they claim. Many folks believe that bin Laden was already dead and had been dead for nearly a decade. I have a Fox News report in front of me, which is dated December 26, 2001, and it has the headline "Bin Laden Already Dead." The article, which cites a report from the Pakistan Observer, claims that Osama bin Laden died from a lung complication near the Tora Bora Mountains. (12)

An ABC News report, dated January 28, 2002 states, that on the night of September 10, 2001, bin Laden was at a hospital in Pakistan receiving dialysis. The report cites a hospital worker who claims they had a very unusual patient that night. "The military had him surrounded, and I saw the mysterious patient helped out of a car. I have seen many pictures of the man. He is the man we know as Osama bin Laden. I also heard two army officers talking to each other. They were saying that Osama bin Laden had to be watched carefully and looked after." (13)

A report from CNN, dated January 18, 2002, quotes Pakistan's former president, General Pervez Musharraf, as saying of bin Laden, "I think now, frankly, he is dead for the reason he is a kidney patient." Musharraf went on to say, "I don't know if he has been getting all that treatment in Afghanistan now. And the photographs that have been shown of him on television show him extremely weak. I would give the first priority that he is dead and the second priority that he is alive somewhere in Afghanistan." (14)

We may never know what really happened and how much of the official story is true. With today's modern technology, it is easy to fake pictures and videos. In fact, according to an article from the Washington Post, dated May 25, 2010, the CIA admits to faking at least one bin Laden video. (15) However, the majority of the American people will never question the official story because they desperately want it to be true. I personally cannot say for sure what happened because I wasn't there. However, in my personal opinion, I find the official story to be flimsy at best. It will be interesting to see if Barack Obama attempts to use this event as a way to bolster his chances of reelection.

Is The United States Becoming A Police State?

The United States of America is traditionally known as a "free country." In fact, the United States' Declaration of Independence refers to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" as "unalienable rights." Yet, since September 11, 2001, we have seen the freedoms that American citizens traditionally enjoy become slowly and systematically stripped away. When the US Patriot Act was passed in October 2001, it gave the United States government an unprecedented amount of authority to watch, spy, and conduct surveillance on the American people. Agencies of the government, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, can now issue letters demanding the release of information regarding American citizens. These letters, which are known as National Security Letters, require no probable cause or judicial oversight. In the year 2010, the FBI issued 24,287 such letters and demanded information pertaining to 14,212 Americans. (16)

How bad could things get? Counter terrorism experts are now speculating that security measures may need to be increased at a variety of locations; including malls, shopping centers, stadiums, hotels, and even places of worship, due to concern of retaliatory terrorist attacks related to Osama bin Laden's death. According to security consultant David Boehm, in the future we could see security checkpoints at all such locations, which they refer to as "soft targets." (17) Will we someday be forced to suffer through an airport style security checkpoint just to go shopping at the local department store?

On May 4, 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, issued a press release announcing new policy changes, which will allow them to seize food and prevent it from being released to the marketplace for up to thirty days regardless of whether or not there is any evidence that the food may be unsafe for consumption. The press release states, "Previously, the FDA's ability to detain food products applied only when the agency had credible evidence that a food product presented was contaminated or mislabeled in a way that presented a threat of serious adverse health consequences or death to humans or animals." The new regulations, which are part of the Food Safety Modernization Act, will take effect in July 2011. (18)

Many news outlets have been publishing reports in recent days of Apple and Google's ability to collect data about its mobile phone users and to track their whereabouts everywhere they go. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, phones running on Google's Android operating system collect user location data every few seconds and transmit that data to Google several times an hour. Apple also collects location data of its iPhone users and receives transmission of that data every twelve hours. (19) It has now come to light that the Michigan State Police have been utilizing a device that can quickly copy all information from a person's mobile phone, and the equipment is sometimes being used even in cases of minor traffic violations. The device, which is known as the Physical Analyzer and is manufactured by a company known as CelleBrite, allows for the "complete extraction of existing, hidden, and deleted phone data, including call history, text messages, contacts, images, and geotags," according to the product brochure. (20)

Legislation has been drafted by Department of Transportation officials commissioning the creation of a Surface Transportation Revenue Alternatives Office to conduct trials for a new mileage tax that would charge automobile drivers for every mile that they drive. The proposal is highly unpopular, and according to Geoffrey Styles, writer of the Energy Outlook blog, the potential invasion of privacy is a big reason many American drivers would balk at the implementation of the new tax. "The problem comes the minute you introduce a device in the vehicle. [People] do not want the government to know where they are and where they are going," Styles said. (21)

Promiscuous Behavior - Condoned By The Powers That Be!

In today's society, the population of the Western world is constantly bombarded with lust-instilling material from television, magazines, licentious musicians, provocative Hollywood stars, and especially the Internet. This constant exposure to unseemly material is wreaking havoc on the lives of not only the adult population, but also on the lives of the children.

The city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ranks within the top ten for incidences of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. In fact, the occurrence of HIV in Philadelphia is five times the national average, and 25 percent of all new infections occur with youth ages thirteen to twenty-four. In an attempt to combat the spread of STDs, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health has been distributing free condoms throughout the city at more than one hundred sites, including community-based organizations, churches, corner stores, beauty salons, adult clubs, bookstores, bathhouses, and college health centers. However, the city of Philadelphia decided that wasn't enough, and they have now launched a new program known as "Take Control Philly." The website for the program, which is geared towards youth, includes instructional videos which explain how to use condoms, and it also features a form that children ranging from ages eleven to nineteen can fill out to request that condoms be delivered to their homes through the mail. (22)

As It Was In The Days Of Lot!

For those who have studied American history at any depth, it is quite apparent that mainstream culture in the United States has grown more permissive as the years have passed. We now see a whole slew of sins brought to the forefront of society and proudly paraded about while those responsible for the aberrant behavior are patted on the back and told that their lifestyles are acceptable. Yet, our Holy Bible tells us that our God is unchanging. If he disapproved of certain actions in the past, he still disapproves of them today, regardless of what politicians, activists, or preachers may have to say about it. In Malachi 3:6 it says, "For I am the LORD, I change not."

The Bible makes it very clear that God does not approve of homosexual behavior. However, the few Christians still willing to stand up in opposition to this perverse lifestyle find themselves in an increasingly precarious situation. Those who dare to speak out against homosexuality are ostracized and called bigots. It has become quite clear that homosexuals are determined to ram their way of life down our throats and force us to not only tolerate their behavior, but accept it.

Lawmakers in the state of California are now considering a bill known as the Fair Education Act, which would require schools to include the "achievements" of homosexuals in their history and social studies curriculum. State Senator Mark Leno, an openly gay Democrat from San Francisco, authored the bill. "It is apparent that we are censoring the history lessons of our students by denying them the facts of the struggle for equal civil rights for the LGBT community," Leno said. (23)

The United States Navy has announced they will now allow same-sex marriages to be performed in their chapels. "Consistent with the tenets of his or her religious organization, a chaplain may officiate a same-sex, civil marriage: if it is conducted in accordance with a state that permits same-sex marriage or union; and if that chaplain is, according to the applicable state and local laws, otherwise fully certified to officiate that state's marriages," said Rear Admiral Mark Tidd, the Navy's chief of chaplains. (24)

Despite being a predominantly Catholic nation, the South American country of Brazil has legalized same-sex unions. The decision by the Brazilian Supreme Court was unanimous with the vote being 10-0. (25) As the homosexual lifestyle becomes more prevalent and accepted all over the world, it becomes another sign that we are living in the end times. In Luke 17:28-30, the Scriptures tell us, " Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed."

Record Breaking Deadly Weather!

April 2011 was a month of extreme weather in the United States. There were six states - Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia - that recorded their wettest April since 1895. Meanwhile, Texas suffered from a drought that covered 95% of this large state. To make matters worse, there were 305 tornadoes from April 25-28, which killed at least 309 people. The total amount of tornadoes in the United States for the entire month of April was an astounding 875. (26)

The recent wet weather in the United States has also caused catastrophic flooding in many areas along the Mississippi River. The flooding was so bad in some sections along the river that the Army Corp of Engineers was left with no other recourse but to destroy one levee and open floodgates in other areas, which has left millions of acres of land underwater. (27)

Weather Services International is predicting the formation of fifteen tropical storms this hurricane season. Eight of those storms are expected to be of hurricane strength with at least four of them being a category-3 strength hurricane or greater. Weather forecasters have warned Americans to "expect a much more impactful season along the US coastline." (28)

There certainly seems to be an increase in deadly weather, not just in the United States, but all over the world. As we see earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and other disasters occur, it serves as a reminder of how much we need God's protection in these tumultuous times.

A Stalling Economy!

As usual, Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke and his associates at the Federal Reserve are insisting that America is on the right track, and that the road to recovery is just around the bend. They keep telling us that things are getting better, but unemployment remains extremely high, the housing market is in rough shape, inflation is rising, gas prices are hovering around $4.00 per gallon, and the United States government is on the verge of defaulting on its debt if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling by August 2011.

How bad is the job market in the United States? McDonalds Corp, which is known for its cheap, unhealthy fast food, recently went on a job hiring spree and hired 62,000 new employees. The original plan called for the hire of only 50,000 employees, but what is truly shocking is the amount of people they had to turn away. Over one million people applied for jobs at McDonalds. (29)

A real estate research firm, known as Zillow, reported in May 2011 that 28.4 percent of all single-family home mortgages now have negative equity. Home loans in this condition are referred to as "underwater mortgages." (30) The city of Chicago is so desperate to get rid of their abandoned homes that they have now teamed up with Bank of America to simply donate some of the empty houses to nonprofit organizations. (31) Just think, the housing market is so bad in Chicago that they have decided to start giving homes away!

On May 16, 2011, the United States' government reached its debt ceiling of $14.29 trillion dollars. Although the country is at its debt limit, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Congress that the government will continue to be able to pay its debts until August 2, 2011, through the use of "extraordinary measures," such as borrowing money from the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund. (32) In all likelihood, the U.S. Congress will raise the debt ceiling before we reach August 2011. However, the reality remains that the United States of America is a country that can no longer function without borrowing money. The interest payments on U.S. debt in the year 2010 exceeded 413 billion dollars. (33)

In closing, I encourage all of you to keep seeking God in these troubling times. I know there are many things wrong in this world in which we live. However, we serve a great and merciful God who will watch over us and keep us safe if we abide in His will. If you have not yet given your heart to God, I encourage you to do so now. I know that without the Lord Jesus Christ in my life, I would feel hopeless. Our Saviour has promised that He will return, and I know that God always keeps His promises. The cry of my heart truly is, "Even so, come, Lord Jesus."

Thank you to all who support this ministry. It is your kindness and generosity that allows us at Last Trumpet Ministries to do what we do. We will endeavor to keep you all informed of the current events happening in these last days and strive to improve the quality and content of each new issue of this newsletter in the subsequent months. It has been one year since we published the final issue written by my father, Pastor David J. Meyer. I know that he cannot be replaced, but I thank God and all of our readers for this opportunity to serve in his absence and work for the Lord as we grow ever closer to the glorious return of our Saviour. If you have any prayer requests, small or great, feel welcomed to send them our way. Our intercessors will give each request individual attention. We also ask you to keep us in prayer concerning a new processing center that we would like to build on property adjoining our church that my father had purchased shortly before passing on. We seek God's wisdom, grace, and blessing as we attempt to work out all of the details regarding this project. I know that if it is the Lord's will, everything will work out. Grace and peace be unto you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Samuel David Meyer
