PANAMA CITY (AP) — Police fired tear gas Sunday to clear blockades of the Pan-American highway by indigenous groups protesting changes to the mining law. One person was killed and 39 injured in the resulting clashes.

Security Minister Jose Raul Mulino said police broke up the blockades after members of the Ngobe-Bugle tribe in western Panama refused calls for dialogue.

Protest leader Liborio Miranda said a 26-year-old indigenous man was shot dead in the chest.

"It was a cowardly attack," Miranda said of the early morning police operation. Indigenous activists had started blocking the key highway linking Panama and Costa Rica on Monday.

In retaliation, protesters burned a police station in retaliation in San Felix, located 250 miles (400 kilometers) west of the capital.

Mulino denied the use of lethal force and told a television station the cause of the man's death was unknown. He said demonstrators threw stones at officers.

Mulino said later in a news conference that the outcome of the clashes was one person dead along with 32 protesters and seven police officers injured. He added that the gun that killed the protester was not police issue. Forty-one protesters were detained.

He said police only acted after the blockades had created an "unsustainable situation."

The blockages of various parts of the highway had stranded travelers, mainly from other Central American countries, and created a huge traffic jam of trucks and cars.

The indigenous groups were protesting a decision by a legislative committee to lift a suspension of mining and reservoir construction in their region.

"Mum and dad belong to us on Sunday"

First European Citizens' initiative for a work-free Sunday in Europe

We need a work-free Sunday in all of Europe,

• because children need a family day, which is protected as a day off-work

• because this brings Europe forward on it's way to become the most child-friendly region in the world

• because according to EU legislation, Sunday is the weekly rest day for children and adolescents

• because schools and public institutions never used to work on Sundays and do not intend to do so in the future - despite of various religious, cultural and ethnical backgrounds

• because studies prove the positive health effects of the work-free free Sunday

• because every person needs spare time - to relax, to be active in civil society, for hobbies and for religion

• because the work-free Sunday is an essential pillar of the European Social Model and a part of the European cultural heritage.

Under a New Steeple, a Harlem Church Gets Out From Under Debt

Let’s say something good about mortgages.

O.K. They’re flammable.

The pastors, elders and members of the Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church at Lenox Avenue and West 123rd Street are so happy to be living without debt that they restaged a mortgage-burning ceremony last week just to have a photographic record.

“We’ve paid it off — praise God,” the Rev. Dedrick L. Blue, the senior pastor, said on Wednesday. The $550,000 mortgage was held by the Atlantic Union Revolving Fund, a church-affiliated lending institution. Ephesus now has a credit of $62.09, Dr. Blue said.

In January, church leaders restaged the mortgage burning as a photo op. In the foreground are Alvaro Stewart and the Rev. Dedrick L. Blue. Behind them, from left, are Allen Price, Melissa Preddie, Joseph Merriweather, Otis Searcy, Franz DeFreitas and John Cunningham.

What occasioned the borrowing was an ambitious project to restore the exterior of the 125-year-old church, which was badly damaged in a 1969 fire. That was when it lost the tip of its slender steeple, a Harlem landmark for generations. The steeple was not replaced during the reconstruction in the early 1970s. But it was recreated and reinstalled five years ago, in the most obvious sign of the renovation project. Other work included repointing the facade after Allen Price, the church’s building chairman, discovered there was no mortar between the stone blocks.

“The only thing that was holding this building up was gravity itself,” Dr. Blue said.

The congregation — predominantly African-American, with a good many members from the Caribbean, Central America, Brazil and West Africa — numbers about 1,200 to 1,300. Not everyone thought the church should be spending so much money on a building project, Dr. Blue conceded. But he added that the structural revitalization went hand in hand with a desire by church leaders to bridge the divide between old and new Harlem. “It’s almost a symbol; not only of what we were but of what we are becoming,” he said.

The building, designed by John Rochester Thomas, was constructed as the Second Collegiate Church of Harlem. Ephesus has occupied it since 1930. It is included in the Mount Morris Park Historic District. Joseph Merriweather, a longtime member with personal memories of the fire, credited a Fire Department captain with having preserved the stained-glass windows.

The new steeple rode out Tropical Storm Irene last year, but so many roof tiles were damaged that water got into the pipe organ, swelling the wood and leather. It is still playable, Dr. Blue said, but much diminished. As he surveyed the main sanctuary, he envisioned a renovation that would bring back some of the 19th-century character of the original building and, among other touches, eliminate the “disco light” chandeliers installed in the 1970s.

Would such a project mean another mortgage? The pastor raised his eyebrows at the question, as if he wished the subject hadn’t come up. “To be honest with you,” he answered, “yes.”

Remember, though, that Ephesus already has $62.09 in hand.

European Day for a Work free Sunday

CALL FOR ACTION !

4 march 2012: European Day for a Work free Sunday !

The European Sunday Alliance calls on all members and supporters to take action on Sunday, 4 March 2012, as the EUROPEAN DAY FOR A WORK-FREE SUNDAY.

Download the call in German, French, English

unknown

In times of financial and economic crisis when more and more social and employment rights are coming under pressure, the work-free Sunday is a clear and visible demonstration that the people and our societies are not dependent solely on work and the economy.

We believe that all citizens of the European Union are entitled to benefit from decent working hours that, as a matter of principle, exclude working late evenings, nights, public holidays and Sundays. Only essential services should operate on Sundays.

Today, legislation and practices now in place at EU and Member State levels need to be more protective of the health, safety and dignity of everyone and should more assertively promote the reconciliation of professional and family life. We believe that social cohesion in European citizenship should be reinforced.

Therefore, the Alliance calls on members, supporters and all citizens to make our common demand visible on Sunday, 4 March 2012!

There are Sunday Alliances in some EU Member States, which have had this tradition for a number of years. Whatever actions or political discussions you wish to organise will be up to each organisation to decide. The visibility of this special Sunday will not depend only on one ‘big event’ but also on innovative ideas and projects reflecting the local and regional culture and European traditions. And this idea of a European Day on a work-free Sunday can grow from one year to the next.

For more ideas on possible actions, please see for example: www.allianz-fuer-den-freien-sonntag.de and http://www.sonntagsallianz-bayern.de.

To make our common mission as visible as possible, please let us know what you are planning and send us a photo or a video on your action. We will publish it on our website!

Iran Begins Naval Exercises Near Gulf Strait

By ALI AKBAR DAREINI Associated Press

TEHRAN, Iran February 4, 2012 (AP)

Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard began naval maneuvers Saturday in the latest show of force near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the critical Gulf oil tanker route that Tehran has threatened to close in retaliation for tougher Western sanctions.

Plans for new Iranian war games in the Gulf have been in the works for weeks. But they got under way following stern warnings by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, about any possible U.S. or Israeli attacks against Tehran's nuclear facilities.

The month-long maneuvers also come after Western forces boosted their naval presence in the Gulf led by the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.

In this photo released by an official website of the Iranian supreme leader's office, Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, delivers Friday prayers sermon, at the Tehran University campus, Iran, Friday, Feb. 3, 2012. Iran will help any nation or group that confronts the "cancer" Israel, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Friday. He also said in remarks delivered to worshippers at Friday prayers in Tehran and broadcast on state TV that the country would continue its controversial nuclear program, and warned that any military strike by the U.S. would only make Iran stronger. (AP Photo/Office of the Supreme Leader)

Iran has so far made no attempts to disrupt shipping through the strait, the route for one-fifth the world's crude oil. The U.S. and allies have said they would respond swiftly to any attempts at a blockade.

Last month, Iran's navy wrapped up 10 days of exercises in the Gulf, but the Revolutionary Guard — which is directly under control of the supreme leader — represents a significantly stronger military force and controls key programs such as missile development. Iranian state media announced the new maneuvers, but gave no further details.

Khamenei, in a speech nationally broadcast on Friday, staked out a hard line after suggestions by Israel that military strikes are an increasing possibility if sanctions fail to rein in the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

He pledged to aid any nation or group that challenges Israel and said any military strikes would damage U.S. interests in the Middle East "10 times" more than they would hurt Iran. The comments also may signal that Tehran's proxy forces — led by Lebanon's Islamic militant group Hezbollah — could be given the green light to revive attacks on Israel as the showdown between the archfoes intensifies.

The West and its allies fear Iran could use its uranium enrichment labs — which make nuclear fuel — to eventually produce weapons-grade material. Iran insists it only seeks reactors for energy and medical research.

Israel has so far publicly backed the efforts by the U.S. and European Union for tougher sanctions that target Iran's crucial oil exports. But Israeli leaders have urged even harsher measures and warn that military action remains a clear option despite Western appeals to allow time for the economic pressures and isolation to bear down on Iran.

Although Israel has raised the strongest hints over a military campaign, Khamenei reserved some of his strongest comments for Israel's key U.S. ally.

"A war itself will damage the U.S. 10 times" more in the region, said Khamenei.

Khamenei claimed Iran would only emerge stronger from a conflict. "Iran will not withdraw. Then what happens?" asked Khamenei. "In conclusion, the West's hegemony and threats will be discredited" in the Middle East. "The hegemony of Iran will be promoted. In fact, this will be in our service."

On Thursday, Israel's defense minister, Ehud Barak, suggested the world is increasingly ready to consider a military strike if sanctions fail. The head of the country's strategic affairs ministry, Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon, also suggested Iran's main military installations are still vulnerable to airstrikes — even as Iran starts up a new uranium enrichment facility deep in a mountainside bunker south of Tehran.

Yaalon's comments appear to reinforce earlier suggestions by other Israel officials that the window for a possible attack is closing and Israel would need to strike by summer to inflict significant setbacks on Iran's nuclear facilities. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity under standing guidelines.

At Ramstein Air Base in Germany, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said sanctions remain the best approach to pressure Iran. But he told U.S. airmen Friday that Washington keeps "all options on the table and would be prepared to respond if we have to."

Khamenei answered by repeating Iran's declarations that it will never roll back its nuclear program, which he had earlier said was now part of the country's "identity" and a cornerstone of its technological endeavors. On Friday, Iran said it successfully sent a small satellite into orbit in the third such launch in recent years, state media reported.

Khamenei affirmed that Iran had assisted groups such as Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas — a well-known policy rarely stated explicitly by Iranian leaders — and said that Tehran would assist anyone else who challenges Israel.

"From now on, in any place, if any nation or any group confronts the Zionist regime, we will endorse and we will help. We have no fear expressing this," said Khamenei, using the phrase widely used by Iran's leader to describe Israel.

Minn. food company recalls about 1 million eggs in 34 states

Updated 11h 18m ago

MINNETONKA, Minn. (AP) – A Minnesota food company said Friday it is recalling more than a million hard-cooked eggs distributed to 34 states after testing revealed some may be contaminated with listeria.

Robert F. Bukaty, AP
Lab testing by a third party revealed that some eggs may have been contaminated and the company determined that a repair project in a packaging room was the likely source of contamination.

Some 15,000 pails of eggs in brine, sold for institutional use, are being recalled, Michael Foods spokeswoman Diane Sparish said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the eggs were produced at the company's plant in Wakefield, Neb., and were bought by food distributors and manufacturers and not sold directly to retailers. There have been no reports of illness connected to the eggs, the agency said.
Lab testing by a third party revealed that some eggs may have been contaminated and the company determined that a repair project in a packaging room was the likely source of contamination, Sparish said in an email to The Associated Press. She said more than a million eggs were being recalled.

Michael Foods has taken a number of corrective steps to address the issue and prevent recurrence, she said.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The eggs are sold under six brand names: Columbia Valley Farms; GFS; Glenview Farms; Papetti's; Silverbrook; and Wholesome Farms.

The states included in the recall include: Alabama; Arkansas; Arizona; California; Colorado; Florida; Georgia; Iowa; Illinois; Indiana; Kansas; Kentucky; Louisiana; Michigan; Minnesota; Missouri; Mississippi; Montana; North Carolina; North Dakota; Nebraska; New Jersey; Nevada; Ohio; Oklahoma; Oregon; Pennsylvania; South Carolina; Tennessee; Texas; Utah; Washington; Wisconsin; and West Virginia.

Happy Sabbath

The National Prayer Breakfast

The National Prayer Breakfast was held yesterday, as it always is, at the Washington Hilton, the only hotel with a ballroom large enough to contain such a large crowd. The attendees pay $175 and don’t even get a made-to-order omelet. It is a bizarre event.

The Prayer Breakfast is organized by the Fellowship, a shadowy and somewhat sinister organization that provides room and board for conservative members of Congress, as well as support for crazy evangelical pastors abroad, such as those leading the effort to make homosexuality punishable by death in Uganda. The Fellowship’s members have been involved in a slew of scandals, both personal and political, raising some questions about the group’s effectiveness at inculcating moral virtues among its members. But, when they throw this breakfast, everyone attends and no one questions why they don’t have the prayer in a church. I will vote for any candidate who vows to have a National Prayer Morning, at which everyone goes to St. Matthew’s Cathedral for morning Mass, and they can get breakfast on their own, and far more cheaply, at Kramer’s up the street when Mass is finished.

I watched part of the event on C-Span (link below), including most of the keynote address by Eric Metaxas, the acclaimed biographer of William Wilberforce and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Metaxas was funny, perhaps a bit too funny for the temper of the event, but far be it from me to criticize any religious personage who interjects humor into their talk and avoids the kind of stern moralizing to which we are accustomed.

The central theme of Metaxas’ speech, however, was no laughing matter. He continually contrasted “real faith” in the living God, a personal God, a personal encounter with Jesus, with what he called “fake religiosity.” He warned against those who go to church but do not evidence the grace of God in their lives. Metaxas reminded the audience that it was Satan who threw scripture texts at Jesus in the desert, calling down condemnation on those who use scripture to condemn others. He called on his listeners to love their enemies and made a profound and deftly un-political call for all to recognize the humanity of the unborn and the sincerity of those who fail to recognize that humanity. He said that all of us are called, as Wilberforce and Bonhoeffer were, to let our faith so change our lives that we, in turn, change the world. All this is fine, up to a point.

That point is this: Few among us have the courage, or the gifts, of a Wilberforce or a Bonhoeffer. Few among us are so thoroughly converted as to ever avoid hypocrisy in our lives, failing to live up to the Gospels’ call to perfection and love of enemies, but nonetheless believing in the Gospel and its promise of salvation. Metaxas is undoubtedly right that true religion is not a moral code, but religion entails a way of life and, for most of us, moral codes help navigate our way through often confusing and conflicting choices. Metaxas sometimes condemned religiosity but his critique often seemed to lump religion in with religiosity, and faith in Christ not only liberates, it binds, the root of the word religion. I suppose in front of such an audience, it is a good thing to call for total conversion and absolute faith, to denounce false prophets and judgmentalism among the faithful, but still, Metaxas’ view of religion struck me as distinctly Protestant, a set of “either/or” moments of decision, completely unalert to the beauty, the graced beauty, of James’ Joyce’s famous observation about Catholicism: “Here comes everybody.”

Metaxas said that “this is a Bonhoeffer moment,” and then added, “It is only the grace of God that can bring left and right together and do the right thing.” But, is this really a “Bonhoeffer moment?” The issues that divide our political class are not the issues that divided Germany in the 1930s. And in a liberal, multi-ethnic, socio-economically diverse democracy like ours, there is something decidedly illiberal about the suggestion that there is only one “right thing” to do. Even President Obama, whose speech was way too overtly political for such an event, allowed that, “Now, we can earnestly seek to see these values lived out in our politics and our policies, and we can earnestly disagree on the best way to achieve these values. In the words of C.S. Lewis, “Christianity has not, and does not profess to have a detailed political program. It is meant for all men at all times, and the particular program which suited one place or time would not suit another. Our goal should not be to declare our policies as biblical. It is God who is infallible, not us.” I wish President Obama had uttered that qualification before he began his litany about the ways his policies reflect his values, but at least he said it. In Metaxas’ view, apparently, everything is crystal clear, the choices are always arch, every moment is a Bonhoeffer moment.

In short, Metaxas’ speech was simultaneously somewhat wonderful and very off-putting. I am very curious to know what readers thought of it. It left me thinking I am glad to be a Catholic, that when I go to Mass today (and get my throat blessed!), my fellow congregants will be just as mired in sin and doubt as I am and that the salvation I seek will not be acquired in this life only, which casts all our human struggles in a different and less apocalyptic light. Yes, some of life’s choices are as clear as those that faced Bonheoffer and Wilberforce, but I am glad to belong to a church that has room for the uncourageous, for the weak of faith, for those whose moral compass is broken, and, yes, even for the hypocrites. “Here comes everybody” suggests a Church that understands the Kingdom of God has room for everybody, not just for the Bonhoeffers and the Wilberforces. “Plenty good room in my Father’s Kingdom,” as the negro spiritual has it. Room for everybody because, with all our human baggage, here comes everybody.

Here is a link to the C-Span video of the event.

A make-or-break moment on sex abuse and more Vatican news

Februray 3, 2012

by John L Allen Jr on Feb. 03, 2012

In a polarized world, it was probably inevitable that opinion on the Catholic sex abuse crisis, like pretty much everything else, would crystallize into two opposing blocs. On one side are critics convinced the church still doesn't get it because it has failed to enact the sweeping reforms they support; on the other are apologists who believe the church has been unfairly turned into a scapegoat, and that if anything, it's overreacted.

Bishop Eddie Long is crowned 'king in God's government' (VIDEO)

Bishop Eddie Long is crowned 'king in God's government' (VIDEO)

'King' Eddie Long

Bishop Eddie Long, the subject of sexual allegations made by male members of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, is making headlines again. This time it's because video of one of his church services has gone viral.

Long has recently started performing church services again after briefly stepping down as head pastor from the church due to a sex scandal and subsequent divorce from his wife. This Sunday, however, he invited a special guest, Rabbi Ralph Messer. The church televised a very special edition of worship service as the rabbi crowned the bishop as "king".

WATCH THE VIDEO OF THE CEREMONY HERE

In this 14 minute-long video clip, Messer reveals to church members a priceless 312-year-old scroll apparently recovered from Auschwitz after World War II. After introducing Long, he says, "He was brought through the slaves, raised up in a city, and God now wants to release a new anointing."

At around the five-minute mark, Messer wraps an emotional Eddie Long in the scroll. After more prayer and being fully wrapped in the scroll, which is said to be done for kings in Israel as a Jewish ritual, four men from the church proceed to "raise him up from a commoner to a kinship." Long is paraded around the church stage so that members are able to applaud their new king.

The World According to Charles 'Chuck' Schumer

Is it just my imagination, or is Charles Schumer consistently advocating for some new frivolous legislation? It seems to me that just about every week the Democratic Senator from New York is in the news headlines trying to pass a new law.

Why does Senator Chuck Schumer have so much to say?

Why does have such a keen insight in to what society needs?

Is the government involvement in every aspect of life Sen. Schumer's solution to everything?

Now he's worrying about superPAC(s) political contributions (CASH FOR CLUNKERS).
