About 40,000 people lost power in the Orlando area early Sunday evening, according to Progress Energy and Orlando Utilities Commission, and Orlando police said traffic signals at more than 100 intersections weren't working.

A wind gust of 86 mph was recorded at Orlando International Airport. The conditions led to the postponement of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, which will resume at 10 a.m. Monday.

Tornado warnings were issued for several counties throughout the day, but those have since expired.

The last tornado warning expired in Brevard County about 3:30 p.m. The National Weather Service reported a funnel cloud in Titusville with estimated wind gusts at 60 mph and quarter-sized hail. Large tree limbs were knocked down and minor roof damage was reported at four homes.

James Lessard said he heard what sounded like a tornado.

"The saying about a freight train, it's true. I heard the freight train noise, and that's when I yelled to my wife and the kids, 'Get in the bathroom. Get in the tub,'" said Lessard.

Jorge Bergoglio was elected Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on 3/13/2013, and Nicolas Pachon was elected Superior General (Black Pope) on January 14, 2008. With the abdication of Joseph Ratzinger on February 11 of this year, and Peter Hans Kolvenbach's (the previous Superior General of the Jesusits) resignation in Janurary of 2008;  There are now 4.
Joseph Ratzinger is Pope Emeritus in Rome, and Peter Han Kolvenbach is retired (in Lebanon).  That equals 2 White Popes and 2 Black Popes, at once in totality.

The Omega Of Apostasy - Moses Mason

Moses Mason - Decision Time II - 02 - The Omega Of Apostasy Part 1

The battle is on....The enemy is ever seeking to lead souls into infidelity and skepticism. He would do away with God, and with Christ, who was made flesh and dwelt among us to teach us that in obedience to Gods will we may be victorious over sin. {1SM 194.2} ... Be not decieved; many will depart from the faith giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. We have now before us the alpha of this danger. The omega will be of a most startling nature {1SM197.4}... Living temple contains the alpha of these theories. I know that the omega will follow in a little while; and I tremble for our people. {1SM 203}

Drifted into our ranks

The people of God are not to be guided by the opinions or practices of the world. Hear what the Saviour said to his disciples, “I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him; but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God; therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”

The word of God plainly declares that his law is to be scorned, trampled upon, by the world; there will be an extraordinary prevalence of iniquity. The professed Protestant world will form a confederacy with the man of sin, and the church and the world will be in corrupt harmony.

Here the great crisis is coming upon the world. The Scriptures teach that popery is to regain its lost supremacy, and that the fires of persecution will be rekindled through the time serving concessions of the so-called Protestant world. In this time of peril we can stand only as we have the truth and the power of God. Men can know the truth only by being themselves partakers of the divine nature. We have need now for more than human wisdom in reading and searching the Scriptures; and if we come to God’s word with humble hearts, he will raise up a standard for us against the lawless element.

It is difficult to hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end; and the difficulty increases when there are hidden influences constantly at work to bring in another spirit, a counter working element, on Satan’s side of the question. In the absence of persecution, there have drifted into our ranks some who appear sound, and their Christianity unquestionable, but who, if persecution should arise, would go out from us. In the crisis, they would see force in specious reasoning that has had an influence on their minds. Satan has prepared various snares to meet varied minds. When the law of God is made void, the church will be sifted by fiery trials, and a larger proportion than we now anticipate, will give heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. Instead of being strengthened when brought into strait places, many prove that they are not living branches of the True Vine; they bore no fruit, and the husbandman taketh them away.

Woman’s rights and the so-called dress reform

There is an increasing tendency to have women in their dress and appearance as near like the other sex as possible, and to fashion their dress very much like that of men, but God pronounces it abomination. “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety.” 1 Timothy 2:9.

Those who feel called out to join the movement in favor of woman’s rights and the so-called dress reform might as well sever all connection with the third angel’s message.

Donald Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program in Pasadena, Calif., said he's aware of the reports and that they appear to be consistent with a meteor shower.

(I was) "Driving south on Route 495 near Bolton, Mass., and just saw a huge meteorite cross the sky, bluish green with a long white tail, lasted about 10 seconds and burned up in the atmosphere," wrote Bill Dorazio on WCVB-TV's Facebook page.

Yeomans told The Associated Press that he didn't know the cause of the Friday night sightings. He said meteor showers are not that rare, but added "it's unusual to have so many people see it."

Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society told USA Today "it basically looked like a super bright shooting star." The society had over 300 sightings reported on its website.

"I was driving and it stood out very bright compared to the fading light. It had a long tail. I have never seen anything like it. It appeared to be close," wrote Massachusetts resident Matthew C., who said he was driving from Dartmouth to Pocasset.

Yeomans said meteor showers don't typically reach the ground. He said they're generally made up of chunks of asteroids that enter the earth's atmosphere, and if small enough, "burn up after putting on a good show."

When the roll, is called up yonder

When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair;
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

Refrain

When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there.

On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise,
And the glory of His resurrection share;
When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

Refrain

Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care;
Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

Refrain

Happy Sabbath

'The repairer of the breach'

Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Today is the 33rd Anniversary of the Georgia Guide Stones Construction

Intellihub.com
March 22, 2013

The Georgia Guide Stones become 33 years old today, and now is a better time than ever to spread the word about this monument and the goals that it has immortalized in stone.

The stones were erected on March 22, 1980, and there are few details known about who funded or orchestrated this project, aside from the pseudonym “R. C. Christian” which is listed as an “author” on the monument.

According to Vigilant Citizen:

The Georgia Guidestones is an enigmatic granite monument situated in Elbert County, Georgia. Also known as the American Stonehedge, the gigantic structure is almost 20 feet high and is made of six granite slabs, weighing in total 240,000 pounds. The most astonishing detail of the monument is however not its size but the message engraved into it: Ten rules for an “Age of Reason”.

These guides touch upon subjects that are associated with the “New World Order”, including massive depopulation, a single world government, the introduction of a new type of spirituality, etc. The authors of those rules have requested to remain totally anonymous and, until now, their anonymity has been duly preserved.

However, this mysterious group left a text explaining the reasoning behind the rules, a text that was not discussed online before. With this new information, the purpose behind the Guidestones become very clear, leaving little room for hypotheses. The Guidestones describe the ideal world, as envisioned by occult Secret Societies. The monument is therefore proof of an existing link between secret societies, the world elite and the push for a New World Order.

The specific goals for this future society is laid out very plainly in a set of guidelines etched into the stones:

1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
2. Guide reproduction wisely – improving fitness and diversity.
3. Unite humanity with a living new language.
4. Rule passion – faith – tradition – and all things with tempered reason.
5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.
7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials.
8. Balance personal rights with social duties.
9. Prize truth – beauty – love – seeking harmony with the infinite.
10. Be not a cancer on the earth – Leave room for nature – Leave room for nature.

Much like most of the New World Order’s propaganda, these goals are worded with nice sounding euphemisms, but have a very sinister reality buried underneath of the cover story. This list is even bold enough to list major depopulation as a major goal, as its number one tenant.

Is the Pope Good for Christianity?

21 March 2013 | HUGO MENDEZ

St. Francis of Assisi was born in the 12th century. As a young man, he felt called by the gospel to give up his possessions, and rebuild a ruined church in the countryside. He founded the Franciscan Order on the principles of poverty and service to the poor. Desiring to live “like the birds of the fields,” he dressed in simple rags, and called the Church to return to simplicity, humility, and love.

Recently the world was introduced to “Pope Francis,” the newly-elected bishop of Rome. In keeping with the spirit of his namesake, Francis rebuked the worldliness of the Church in his first address: “When we journey without the Cross, when we build without the Cross, when we profess Christ without the Cross, we are not disciples of the Lord, we are worldly: we may be bishops, priests, cardinals, popes, but not disciples of the Lord.” He is setting the tone for a deeply humble ministry, austere and evangelical. Before giving a blessing himself, he stunned millions, asking the city of Rome and the world to pray for him first. Though a pope, he refuses to set himself above other Christians; he silently kneeled before the world as millions prayed for him.

He has since declared it his mission to make the Catholic Church “a poor church for the poor”: humbler, simpler, Galilean. He has insisted on riding in buses and humble sedans since being elected. He has personally paid his own bills. He rejects the more elaborate garments and shoes offered him. He has asked that people give money to aid the the poor and suffering rather than visit Rome. He has called the Church “to profess the one glory: Christ crucified,” for only “in this way, the Church will go forward.” In short, he has acted like a Christian.

Adventists have always admitted that there are true Christians within the Catholic Church. What if the Pope himself was one of them? What would that mean for Adventists?

The year 2012 was historic for the question of the ordination of women in the Seventh-day Adventist church. What does it all mean? This presentation will include a brief history of the issue, personal reflections as a woman in ministry during the past twenty years, and possibilities for the recent study commissions.

QUESTIONS WORTH PONDERING:

What created the knot in the first place?
What efforts have been made to untie it?
Which recent events pulled it tighter?
And is it finally unraveling?

Kendra Haloviak Valentine, PhD Kendra enjoyed working as a Seventh-day Adventist pastor (1989-1993) before joining the Religion Department at Columbia Union College (now Washington Adventist University). Experiences both in congregational and classroom ministry influenced Kendra’s interest in the book of Revelation. She pursued these interests in a doctoral program at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. In July, 2001, Kendra accepted an invitation to join La Sierra University, in Riverside, California, where she now serves as an associate professor of New Testament Studies. Recently Kendra accepted an invitation from the Southeastern California Conference to serve as the assistant to the president for women in ministry. Get Ready for Some Major Disinformation about America's Gold

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2013

An audit of the gold held at the New York Federal Reserve has been completed and the disinformation campaign has started. Notice how LaTi reports the story:

The U.S. government’s gold in New York is safe in a vault underneath Manhattan, and some of the precious metal there is purer than previously thought. The problem with this is that the gold held at the New York Federal Reserve is not "The U.S. government’s gold." It is gold held, for the most part, by the Federal Reserve for foreign countries.

LaTi goes on:

That’s according to a first-ever audit conducted last year by the Treasury Department of U.S. gold on deposit at Federal Reserve banks in New York and elsewhere. This is curious because it is the government conducting the audit. That's like having Bernie Madoff's brother auditing Bernie's customer accounts. Why wasn't an independent auditing firm brought in? And since the gold is held for countries like Germany, why didn't Germany and others who have gold on account get to pick the auditor?

Here's more LaTi disinformation, which misdirects from the above important questions:

As part of the audit, the Treasury tested a sample of the government’s 34,021 gold bars in the New York Fed’s vault five stories below Manhattan’s financial district, according to the inspector general’s office. Auditors drilled tiny holes into the bars to remove samples that were tested for fineness in a process called assaying.
In three of the 367 tests, the gold was more pure than Treasury records indicated, according to the Treasury's inspector general. As a result, the government notched up the value of its gold holdings by approximately 27 fine troy ounces – or about $43,500, based on gold’s market value Monday. Then LaTi tells us this:

The audit of the Fed gold came after 2012 presidential contender and former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) questioned the central bank's gold holdings. While he was in Congress, Paul questioned whether the New York Fed had loaned or otherwise encumbered U.S. gold in financial arrangements, and he advanced a bill that would have required a full assay and audit of the country’s gold reserves. But Dr. Paul was most concerned about "the country’s gold reserves," which is different from what is held at the Fed. The country's gold reserves are held mostly at Fort Knox, which no one is allowed to see, much less audit.

Then we have two more paragraphs of disinformation:

The New York Fed holds 99.98% of the U.S.-owned gold bars and coins in the custody of the Federal Reserve. The rest of the gold is on display at Fed banks in cities such as Richmond, Kansas City and San Francisco.

As of Sept. 30, when the market price of gold was $1,776 an ounce, the Fed banks held $23.9 billion in U.S. gold. (Gold has since declined in value, and on Monday the precious metal was hovering around $1,610 an ounce.)Unlike Fort Knox, the NY Fed gives tours of its vaults, so Americans can see the gold of other countries, but not US gold.

Bottom line: This audit was designed to confuse. Expect more stories about how the Treasury conducted and audit of US gold. Not true. Fort Knox gold, where America's gold supposedly sits, is off limits to all and has never been audited.
Again, the gold held at the New York Fed is mostly gold held for foreign countries. It does not belong to the Federal Reserve or the United States government. LaTi after misdirecting throughout the full story, ends with the limited truth:

The vast majority of the country’s gold reserves is held elsewhere, in Fort Knox, West Point and Denver.
Of course, the full truth is this gold has never been audited and unlike the NY Fed, which provides tours, there are no tours of the Fort Knox gold.

Touring the New York Fed

Every year tens of thousands of visitors from around the world visit the gold vault as part of a free, public tour of the New York Fed. This tour is designed to educate visitors about the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Federal Reserve System. You can register for a tour here.

Bottom Line: The audit of the NY Fed gold will be used to deceive and give the impression that the gold supposedly held for American's has been audited.

Eastern Europe—Closet Communists or NATO Puppets?

Ever since the phony Fall of Communism, the countries in Eastern Europe have been mostly dominated by “former” Communists who are playing as if they switched to the good side. They didn’t, and for the most part they are still taking orders from Moscow, keeping up the deception and penetrating NATO on behalf of Russia but preparing to rejoin a new and stronger Soviet Union at the right time. Some of the countries, however, are run by globalists who are working for a larger EU and much reduced national sovereignty for their own people. The only people not allowed to get elected are true nationalists, not beholden to either side. Even when one of these independent nationalists gets in, they are usually met with an untimely plane crash or other “accidental” death such as what happened to the Polish president.

FIRST JESUIT POPE

Jorge Mario Bergoglio a Jesuit Cardinal from Buenos Aires, Argentina has been selected as the new Pope of the Catholic Church. While the choice is celebrated with great joy in Latin America—the largest body of Catholics in the world, who have long felt slighted about the papal post until now—conservative Catholics are worried about the Jesuit’s Leftist political orientation. As Wikipedia said, “Bergoglio is the first Jesuit chosen to be pope. He is also the first pope from South America, the Americas, the New World, and the Southern Hemisphere. He is the first pope from outside Europe in 1,272 years.” This is a big thing to those who feel they have been under-represented for so long.

Having lived in Latin America several years, I’ve had the opportunity to observe and contend with Jesuit priests. The order is Leftist out of it’s “concern for the poor,” but their outreach is more revolutionary than charitable in action. Jesuit theologians concentrate on the “unequal distribution of wealth in the world” and overtly promote socialism and government redistribution in order to achieve “social justice.”

Because of its socialist orientation, many Jesuit priests have become Marxists and communists and have actively worked toward the violent overthrow of existing governments to achieve those ends. During the violent years of guerrilla activity when I was in Latin America, I experienced the Tupamaros in Uruguay and Argentina, and the Marxist guerrillas of El Salvador and Guatemala.

It seems that Jesuits and Maryknoll nuns in those days were always involved in both direct and indirect support of the revolutionaries. A couple of MaryKnoll nuns were killed supporting the communists, which engendered a huge outcry in the international press. No one would print facts about them hiding behind religious immunity in order to supply Marxist guerrillas.

This relates to the new Pope because he did not support the revolutionary arm of the Jesuits and colluded with the military juntas in Argentina during the “desaparecidos” years (the Disappeared Ones) of 1973-1986 and allowed two of the more militant priests under his supervision to be arrested. They were eventually tortured for information.

What this means to me is that Bergoglio is more of the idealogical Left than the radical and revolutionary Left, and that he opposed revolutionary overthrows of existing regimes. While this distinction is nowhere to be found in the English press, his selection generated some negative press in the Spanish and Latin American countries because of support of the “dictadura” which is considered a betrayal by the Left in Europe and Latin America.

Let me note parenthetically, that there was a reason for the regimes in Argentina and Uruguay to kidnap and kill revolutionaries during the Desaparecido years, while not convicted by the courts. The courts were filled with Marxist judges who would never convict their own in the years prior to the rise of “death squads.”

The death squads and other forms of vigilante justice came about as the only way to eliminate the communists who were responsible for the constant street demonstrations (many violent), bombings and kidnappings for ransom in those countries. In Latin America, universities cannot be invaded by police without permission, so the revolutionaries would retreat to the universities after an attack and use them to cover for the making of bombs and stockpiling weapons.

When a country allows these kinds of safe havens for enemies of liberty, the military is forced to take independent action outside the law and fight a war in the shadows. That’s what happened in Latin America. I’m not saying that death squads were not overzealous or didn’t make mistakes, but it is the Leftists and Marxists in government and the courts protecting the enemy that drove them to it, as a matter of national preservation. Now, all those people have been replaced by yesmen and socialists, so there is little resistance to what’s coming again in Latin America.

Conservative Catholics are also reassured by the new pope’s support of long-held Catholic doctrines of opposition to gay marriage, the teaching that homosexuality is a sin, and the opposition to abortion, euthanasia and contraceptive use.

My concern is that as an ideological Leftist, he will not provide resistance to or change of the current Vatican direction in supporting globalism, as exemplified by remarks of the past two Popes. Ironically, were he more aligned with the revolutionary elements of the Jesuits, he probably would oppose globalism. The hard-core Left is just as opposed to globalist control as on the constitutional Right are—but not for the same reasons. They think it is mere “greedy capitalist” control, not the overarching conspiracy for power and control it really is.

I think Pope Frances will go along with the globalist trend because that matches his history of compromise with past regimes in Argentina. The Vatican needs a good house cleaning to purge it of the Leftist, globalist (money laundering and banking scandals), and homosexual influences, and sadly I don’t think Francis is going to do it. There are powerful partisan factions among the Cardinal selectors representing all these factions and he’s a compromise choice—not a changer.

More Pastors Jumping Off the Rock into the Raging Waters

by Michael Youssef

When evangelical preachers lose their way and turn their backs on biblical Christianity, why is it they end up in the Episcopal Church?

As a preacher who traveled in the opposite direction and left the Episcopal Church 22 years ago—or I should say the Episcopal Church left me—I think I have a clue.

On March 18, the Huffington Post reported that Rob Bell, the one-time evangelical pastor who rejected the core of Christian faith, has endorsed homosexual marriage.

Where was that endorsement made? Surprise, surprise: Grace Cathedral, the Episcopal Cathedral of the Diocese of California. Grace Cathedral is located in San Francisco, the Mecca of homosexuality and all things anti-biblical.

Bell is now living in California, where he’s promoting his book, Love Wins. The book has propelled Bell to a stardom of sorts, even though it rejected a cornerstone of Christian faith—that no salvation is possible except through faith in Jesus Christ. Ultimately, that rejection caused his split with mega-church Mars Hill Bible Church in Grandville, Michigan.

The solid cliff of the Christian gospel that Bell has jumped off is the same cliff that I held fast to when I left the Episcopalian Church. I chose the way of Jesus. Unfortunately, Bell and others have chosen the way of Judas.

“Shock jocks” in the church are not new. They love to make a splash on their way from light to darkness.

In fact, I venture to say that most of them—like Bell and Bishop Spong before him—traveled alongside those in the light, but in reality, were never in the light themselves. They faked their evangelicalism until they could fake it no more. The pressure to be accepted by modern society became too great, and the wolves had to remove their sheep coverings and come out. Then they often found a welcoming audience in the Episcopal Church, who also had long ago given into the need for acceptance from the world.

However, Mr. Bell’s pronouncement of the demise of Bible-believing Christianity may be premature. To be sure, statistics back his assertion that many people are rejecting biblical faith. But that only serves to strengthen true believers.

From the beginning, Jesus taught that true believers would always be small in number, but their impact would be inversely proportional to their size.

After all, martyrdom served as the seed of the church, and it may do that again.

Bell refers to biblical Christianity as a “dying” subculture, but he of all people should know what Jesus said. For Bell once opened the Bible and taught from it.

We know that the sheep and the goats will get mixed up until God begins to separate them. The wheat and weeds will grow together until harvest time, when the angels will bind the weeds and bundle them for the eternal fire.

Therefore those who remain Bible-believing Christians should never panic nor be surprised when we see the weeds revealed. We should not be surprised, but neither should we gloat. Far from it.

It is a tragedy. We should grieve and weep and feel the depth of sorrow for them. May God have mercy on us all.

With Obama In Ramallah, Palestinians Take To The Streets

NPR's Larry Abramson is covering President Obama's visit to the Middle East. He sends this dispatch from the West Bank.

There were a lot of irritated Palestinians in the streets of Ramallah today. But it's hard to pinpoint the cause. Were they made at President Obama, at Israel? Or were they angry at themselves?

All week long, different groups staged demonstrations against the Obama visit, here in Palestine's defacto capital city, and elsewhere, including Gaza. Mothers of those in Israeli jails demanded the release of their children. Many shouted that all Palestinians should have the "right of return" to land inside Israel. And all shouted at the Palestinian Authority security forces, accusing them of collaborating with Israel. They marched through the streets of Ramallah toward the center of government, challenged the police phalanx verbally and then ran out of gas and went home. Many with long experience in such things groaned that the turnout was just pathetic.

Today was no exception. Despite the fact that much of Ramallah was shut down because of Obama's visit today, the crowd of demonstrators again never exceeded 200.

Many blamed the heavy showing by Palestinan Authority security forces for the discouraging those who feared arrest. Others admitted that a a big demo would accomplish little, as the President was unlikely to see them as he helicoptered in and out. But most seemed simply frustrated that it is so hard to garner public attention without a turn to violence.

Vegetarians 'have lower heart risk'

Published on Friday 15 April 2011 17:00

“Veggie diet cuts heart attack risk by a third,” according to the Daily Express, which today reported that vegetarians are a third less likely to suffer heart problems, diabetes or stroke than meat eaters.

The results come from a small study that looked at how different dietary patterns related to the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of disorders, including raised blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The research was conducted in 773 members of the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a Christian denomination that places emphasis on staying healthy and limiting intake of meat. The researchers found that 35% of participants who considered themselves vegetarian were less likely to have metabolic syndrome or its associated risk factors than non-vegetarians.

This relatively small study is of limited value due to both its size and the fact that it assessed a very specific group of people who may not be representative of the population as a whole. Also, it only looked at people at one point in time, meaning that we cannot tell if their past behaviours influenced the prevalence of metabolic syndrome.

It has long been recognised that there may be health benefits from following a diet low in saturated fats and high in vegetables, fruit and unsaturated fats such as nut and seed oils. These health benefits include a reduction in the risk of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. This study does not change current healthy eating advice.

Where did the story come from?

The study was carried out by researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Loma Linda University and the School of Public Health, Loma Linda, California. Funding was provided by the US National Institutes of Health. The study was published in the peer-reviewed medical journalDiabetes Care.

The news stories have, in general, not considered the numerous limitations of this cross-sectional study, including the fact that the study examined a very select population that may not reflect the behaviours or health of the general British population. Additionally, it is not clear where the 36% reduction in the risk of metabolic syndrome in vegetarians quoted in the newspapers came from. The study quoted an odds ratio of 0.44 for metabolic syndrome in vegetarians relative to non-vegetarians, which equates to vegetarian participants having a 56% lower chance of metabolic syndrome than their non-vegetarian counterparts.

What kind of research was this?

This was a cross-sectional survey of participants taking part in The Adventist Health Study 2, an ongoing research project studying followers of the Seventh-day Adventist religious denomination. People who follow this Christian belief system have been studied in dietary research because many adhere to special dietary habits, for example not consuming meat. Their religion also places emphasis on looking after health, particularly through avoiding habits such as smoking and drinking. Their tendency to avoid certain unhealthy lifestyle choices means that researchers can potentially discount the influence of these behaviours when performing analyses.

In this study researchers surveyed the dietary patterns of 773 participants (average age 60 years) and assessed how their diets related to their risk of metabolic syndrome or their risk of having its individual composite risk factors (for example, cholesterol, blood pressure and high BMI). Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of disorders associated with an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Studies with a cross-sectional design (which look at factors at only a single point in time) can give us proportions only, but cannot demonstrate changes or cause and effect relationships because the participants were not followed over time. Also, this particular cross-sectional study took a sub-sample of people taking part in another study, the Adventist Health Study 2, in which all of the participants were Seventh-day Adventists who are known to have different lifestyle and dietary habits from the general population. The selection and inclusion criteria used when enrolling people to The Adventist Health Study 2 may mean they are not representative of the general population.

What did the research involve?

The Adventist Health Study 2 included 96,000 people from the US and Canada, all of whom are Seventh-day Adventists, with the aim of assessing links between their lifestyle, diet and disease. At enrolment all were examined in a clinic where height, weight and blood pressure were measured and blood samples were taken to test for glucose and cholesterol levels.

Metabolic syndrome was defined according to established cut-off levels for glucose (fasting glucose above 100mg/dL), and they considered people to have high blood pressure or diabetes if they were taking medications appropriate to these conditions.

A food frequency questionnaire was administered and people were classed as either:
vegetarian, if meat, poultry or fish was eaten less than once per month
semi-vegetarian, if any amount of fish was eaten, but meat less than once per month
non-vegetarian, if meat or poultry was eaten more than once per month, and in total any type of meat was eaten more than once a week

A telephone assessment was also made to record details of alcohol consumption, smoking and exercise. The current study considered 773 of these people who had appropriate clinical and dietary information available.

What were the basic results?

The average age of participants was 60 years. Some 35% were vegetarians, 16% semi-vegetarian and 49% non-vegetarian. Body mass index (BMI) was lower among the vegetarians (25.7kg/m2) than in the semi- (27.6kg/m2) and non-vegetarians (29.9kg/m2). A BMI of 18.5 to 25 is considered to be ideal weight, and a BMI of over 25 is considered to be overweight.

Risk factors for metabolic syndrome included high levels of cholesterol or glucose, high blood pressure, a large waist circumference or a high BMI. Vegetarians were less likely to have metabolic risk factors (12% of the group had three or more risk factors), compared with semi- and non-vegetarians (in both of these groups 19% had three or more risk factors). After adjusting for other lifestyle risk factors, age and sex, the researchers found that levels of blood cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure, waist circumference and BMI were all significantly lower among vegetarians compared with non-vegetarians. There was also a significantly higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome among non-vegetarians than among vegetarians (39.7% vs. 25.2%). Relative to non-vegetarians, vegetarians had a 56% reduced odds of having metabolic syndrome (odds ratio OR 0.44, 95% confidence interval 0.30 to 0.64, p<0 .001="" br="">

How did the researchers interpret the results?

The researchers conclude that “a vegetarian dietary pattern is associated with a more favorable profile of metabolic risk factors and a lower risk of metabolic syndrome”.

Conclusion

This relatively small, cross-sectional study has found a lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome or its composite risk factors among vegetarians compared with non-vegetarians. The study report itself is brief and there are several important limitations to bear in mind:
As this is a cross-sectional survey, cause and effect cannot be implied. Too little is known about these people, their past diets, their medical history and family history to know what may have contributed to their current state of health.
The dietary categories were quite broad and the definitions used for vegetarian, semi- vegetarian and non-vegetarian may not be consistent with other ideas of what constitutes such a dietary pattern.
Non-vegetarians were studied as a single group containing anybody who ate meat more than once per month. Therefore, the people in this group may have had a wide range of meat-eating behaviours, with the study making no differentiation between people who ate meat twice a month and those who might, for example, eat meat every day.
Disease outcomes, for example, heart disease, stroke and diabetes, are not reported here. Therefore, the one-third reduction in metabolic syndrome among vegetarians does not necessarily equate to one-third lower risk of having a heart attack.
Importantly, this was a cross-sectional assessment of a sub-sample of a very select population group taking part in a wider study examining the diet and lifestyle behaviour of Seventh-day Adventists, and how this affects their health and disease risk. The findings in this group may, therefore, not be applied more generally to the wider population.

It has long been considered that a diet low in saturated fats and high in vegetables, fruit and unsaturated fats, such as nut and seed oils, has health benefits, such as reducing risk of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. This study does not affect current healthy eating advice.

Archbishop of Canterbury enthroned: order of service

The Dean of Canterbury Cathedral, the Very Rev Robert Williis, talks through the enthronement service for the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, which will feature African dancers, Punjabi music and a female cleric.

12:59PM GMT 21 Mar 2013

The Venerable Sheila Watson, Archdeacon of Canterbury, will take a central role in the Canterbury Cathedral service marking the start of the public ministry of the Most Rev Justin Welby as 105th Archbishop of Canterbury.

The cleric, who was made the first female Archdeacon of Canterbury in 2007, will install the archbishop on the diocesan throne in the cathedral, a historic moment symbolising his appointment as bishop of Canterbury - the first of three roles held by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The archbishop will then be installed by the Dean of Canterbury, the Very Rev Robert Willis, on the marble chair of St Augustine in the cathedral, marking his appointment as head of the Church of England and also representing his inauguration as spiritual leader of the 77-million strong Anglican Communion.

Other features of the ceremony include a key role for a young member of the Anglican Communion, Evangeline Kanagasooriam, who will ask the Most Rev Welby formal questions about his role after he has struck the West Door of the cathedral three times with his staff at the start of the service.
There will also be an African element, reflecting the Most Rev Welby's ties with the continent through his former job as an oil executive and most recently in peace and reconciliation work.

The Archbishop of Burundi, in central Africa, the Most Rev Bernard Ntahoturi, will pronounce a blessing in French on the the Most Rev Welby and African dancers who will perform before the Gospel is read at the service.

Other personal touches include the choice of the Most Rev Welby's robes for the service.

He will wear colourful vestments originally designed and made for the late Bishop of Peterborough, the Most Rev Ian Cundy, who was the Most Rev Welby's tutor at Cranmer Hall, Durham, where he trained in preparation for ordination between 1989 and 1992 after leaving the oil industry.

Westminster Cathedral organist Matthew Martin will perform an organ improvisation during the service when five representatives from the worldwide Anglican Communion place symbols representing their region on the high altar of Canterbury Cathedral.

During the service, Archbishop Welby will be asked to make the declaration of assent - outlining his loyalty to the Church of England - by the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu.

The Most Rev Welby will then be asked by the Very Rev Willis to swear an oath of faithfulness on the Canterbury Gospels, brought to Britain by St Augustine in 597.

The service will feature a newly commissioned anthem using the opening words of the Rule of St Benedict set to music by the composer Michael Berkeley.

The ceremony coincides with the feast day of St Benedict of Monte Cassino, a significant figure for both Canterbury Cathedral - which was a Benedictine Monastery a thousand years ago - and Archbishop Welby who is an oblate of the Order of Benedict.
