The BUZZ
September 2008

Dear friends,

Dr. Benjamin S. Carson's inspiring words to Cristo Rey Jesuit on Monday, September 29 were "awesome," according to one Cristo Rey Jesuit sophomore. Dr. Carson's remarks emphasized hard work, perseverance and character, reinforcing the principles we teach--and live--every day at Cristo Rey Jesuit. I am deeply grateful to Peggy Otenasek and Harriet Long for arranging to bring this world-famous physician and philanthropist to our school.

Awesome also describes the first full month of classes. Students, sharp in their new uniforms and sporting messenger bags donated by parishioners of the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier in Hunt Valley, have come to school ready to learn every day. Lucy Neale Duke, director of college counseling, welcomed admissions representatives from Fordham, Villanova and Widener universities, with many more visits scheduled for the rest of the fall. Lucy is also offering special PSAT prep sessions for students.

With 22 new Corporate Internship Program clients signed on this year, we have added additional shuttle bus routes to transport student workers. We are proud to count businesses in Baltimore City, Linthicum, Towson, Rosedale and Hunt Valley as important partners in our program.

This awesome month, and indeed this awesome school, would not be possible without the tremendous support of so many friends. Thank you again for all you do to make Cristo Rey Jesuit possible for our students!

Sincerely,

Rev. John W. Swope, SJ
President

Community leaders celebrate Cristo Rey Jesuit's first anniversary

On Thursday, September 18, more than 200 business and civic leaders from the Baltimore community gathered at Baltimore Country Club to celebrate Cristo Rey Jesuit's first anniversary.
The evening's presentation including a moving poetry reading by James Townes, class of 2011. Other speakers included trusteesJack Luetkemeyer and Marjorie Rodgers Cheshire and school president Rev. John W. Swope, SJ. We would like to thank our generous hosts, trustees George Bunting, Jim Davis, Earl Linehan, and Jack Luetkemeyer, for making this event possible. Thank you also to all of our generous scholarship donors, who helped to make the first year of school such a success!

On the left, Melinda Romero and James Townes, members of the class of 2011, meet their scholarship benefactors, Arnie and Alison Richman. At right, the crowd listens with interest to the presentation.

Dr. Ben Carson speaks as part of school's newly inaugurated "Think Big" Speaker Series

On Monday, September 29, Cristo Rey Jesuit welcomed Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Johns Hopkins Hospital's world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, to the school community. A Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree, Dr. Carson shared with Cristo Rey Jesuit's students the story of his journey from poverty in Detroit's inner city to academic accomplishment at Yale and a successful medical career. His presentation is part of our new "Think Big" speaker series, which brings community and business leaders to speak--and to inspire--our students.

Dr. Carson encouraged the students to "think big," and never believe that something is impossible just because it hasn't been done before. Dr. Carson then took questions on his life and career from Cristo Rey Jesuit students, all of whom had read one of his books. TheBaltimore Examiner covered this event in a September 30 article.

Many thanks to Peggy Otenasek and Harriet Long for making this event possible!

The Riddle, Wrapped In A Mystery, Inside An Enigma

Next Article → INFORMATION WARFARE: Discretion Is Now Required In China

March 25, 2013: Westerners are puzzled at the way Russian politicians are growing increasingly hostile to foreigners in general and the West in particular. Then there is the feud going on within the Defense Ministry over whether to import more Western weapons or rely instead on what Russian defense firms produce.

Scrounging up details from Russian media, discussions on the Internet, and statements by the many members of the Duma (parliament) with access to the inner circle reveals a rather bizarre (to Westerners and some Russians) state of affairs. Put simply, most of those currently running Russia really believe that the United States has formed an anti-Russian coalition that is surrounding Russia in preparation for an invasion. The motive behind this plot is the Western need for Russia’s many natural resources. The U.S. has been using pro-democracy and reform minded NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) within Russia to cause turmoil and weaken the government and military.

It’s true that the current Russian government, which is turning Russia back into a police state, has a lot to fear from Russians calling for reform and more democracy. The government is controlled by men who seized control of Soviet era industries in the 1990s, made them efficient and made themselves enormously wealthy. They were assisted by many former KGB men (especially current president Vladimir Putin) and the more able Soviet bureaucrats.

Along the way Russia became very corrupt and the rule of law was replaced by a system where those who could buy their way out of any trouble did so, and the majority had no access to justice or a clean and efficient government. Putin was smart enough to spread the oil money around and has kept most Russians satisfied (or at least not violently dissatisfied) at the way post-Soviet Russia turned out. Some believe that Putin invented the “Russia is about to be invaded” concept to gain more popular support and does not believe it himself. The KGB tended to recruit the smartest and most capable Russians, and that explains a lot of things about Russia today.

Creating the idea that Russia is surrounded by enemies, led by the old Cold War arch foe America, is something older Russians were exposed to most of their lives. It persuades Russians to keep electing Vladimir Putin and his cronies. But a growing number of Russians are noting that there’s no sign of this conspiracy in the West, only bewilderment over what the Russians are saying. Over time, the Putin paranoia program becomes less believable to more Russians. There is growing fear that, rather than face a majority of Russians who don’t believe in the conspiracy, the current rulers will try to turn Russia into a strict police state, without the trappings of Soviet–style communism or any other ism besides the greed of the small ruling class.

Meanwhile, many military leaders are having their own problems with the paranoia crowd. For over a decade military leaders have been complaining about the inability of Russian defense firms to produce effective and reliable weapons. It was hard to disagree with this, given the poor performance of new Russian weapons and the continued success of comparable Western systems. Russian military leaders also wanted to improve the quality of their troops, and this meant adopting Western practices, like the use of professional NCOs and an all-volunteer force. But many believers in “the Americans are about to invade” worldview also insisted that Russia could only defend itself with Russian designed and made weapons and military traditions. This resulted in growing resistance to the buying Western weapons or making the Russian military look and operates like a Western one. This policy is also meant to buy Western manufacturing technology as well and is, without coming right out and saying it, forcing Russian firms to reform and become more efficient and reliable.

Yet the way Russian leaders are dealing with the aftermath of the Soviet Union collapse makes no sense. That bewilderment is nothing new. Back in 1939 Winston Churchill described Russia as, “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.” Despite all Russia has been through during the intervening 74 years, Churchill’s analysis still seems quite valid. In the meantime the Russians are clear minded on one point, their only effective defense against invasion remains their nuclear weapons and they had paid more attention to maintaining those weapons than any other.

Should Christians Watch TV?

"I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes" - [Psalm 101:3]

In order to properly answer the question "Should Christians Watch TV?" we need to find out what the Bible says about what God expects of us. If you are of the opinion that we dare not be judgmental by speaking out about specific activities, remember that Jesus said "judge with righteous judgment" [John 7:24], lest we come under the condemnation of God's Word and find ourselves among those spoken of here: "There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness" [Prov 30:12].

This study touches on a subject that affects many people today. It is of concern to both Christians and non-Christians. We are concerned with the Christian perspective since God's people need to be concerned about things that concern God. When we study the Bible diligently we can see how God has an opinion on everything already, since the Bible addresses all aspects of our lives by its descriptions of what is holy and pleasing to God and what is offensive and displeasing to God. God has provided the Bible to warn us about things that can harm us and things that can hurt our relationship to Him. Many different things that have the potential for harming our relationship to God and others, can be substituted for TV in the discussion below such as reading worldly books and magazines, watching sporting events, surfing the Internet,

Hopefully you will be confronted with many challenging, thought-provoking questions to encourage you to examine your own situation and come away with a better understanding of the holiness of God and His will for His people. "Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain." [I Cor 9:24]

Is there anything I could get exposed to by watching TV, commercials included, that would pollute my mind?

2 Cor 7:1 - "dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."

Does God really care if I accidentally see something sinful or ungodly on TV?

Deu 7:26 - "Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing."

James 4:4 - "Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God."

Does God want me to be unnecessarily exposed to people who mock Him and His commandments and that desensitize me to the sin in me and around me?

Psa 1:1 - "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful."

Jude 1:17-18 - "But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts."

Can I honestly say to God that I am being his obedient servant when I sit down in front of a TV set? Is that the calling he calls me to?

Rom 12:1 - "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service."

Would I tell another Christian that if they want to renew their mind and avoid being conformed to this world, they should watch TV?

Rom 12:2 - "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

Is even the most Godly of TV shows more important than reading the Bible, spending time in prayer or ministering to a person in need?

Do I already spend too much time in the word and in prayer? We need to be honest with ourselves and with God about how we spend our time. Is what I am watching drawing me nearer to God? Psalm 119:105 says: "Thy wordis a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." It does NOT say: TV is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Proverbs 3:13-15 says: "Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her."

Does watching TV expose my eyes (and mind) to ungodly and unholy things?

Mat 6:22-23 "The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!"

Does TV help me to redeem the time?

Eph 5:15-16 "See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil."

Could things on TV negatively affect others in my home?

Mat 18:6-9 - "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh! Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire."

Is TV viewing the most profitable use of my time?

Titus 3:8 - "This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men."

The Bible exhorts us to do things that are good and profitable. What do I teach family members about my priorities by watching TV instead of having family devotions? What am I telling God when I watch TV and rarely if ever spend quality time in prayer with Him? Should I even watch the news when I have yet to make time in the day to pray for family, friends, church leadership, the congregation, missionaries, our nation's youth, leaders, judges, teachers, police, prisoners, the elderly, the sick, the handicapped, the homeless, the jobless and people in bondage to all sorts of sins?

What is the spiritual value of watching TV?

1 Cor 3:12-15 - "Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire."

Where does TV watching fit in to God's plan for me? Is it comparable to gold, silver, costly stones?

Whose time am I wasting if I watch TV?

1 Cor 6:19-20 - "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."

Does TV help me to glorify God more than praying for and witnessing to the lost or more than ministering to the body of Christ?

Do I want to be counted among the unprofitable and slothful servants?

Prov 24:30-32 "I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction."

Think of all the productive things you could be doing for the Lord with time you may currently be spending vegetating in front of the tube.

Does TV fit into my role as an ambassador for Christ?

Eph 6:19-20 - "And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak."

Am I ignoring admonitions in God's word to avoid putting wicked things before my eyes?

Psa 101:3 - "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes"

Does TV fit into my role as a soldier in God's army?

2 Tim 2:3-4 "Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier."

Do soldiers get paid and trained to watch TV or to do battle? Is TV preparing me to do battle with the enemy or is it giving me new enemies to worry about?

Does TV viewing prepare me to have the heart and mind of Christ?

1 Cor 2:16-3:1 - "who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ."

Can you picture the King of Kings and Lord of Lords telling his disciples that he needed to watch TV to unwind from ministering to the masses of lost sheep who followed him everywhere? He sought and found his rest in the quiet time he spent in prayer alone with his Father. We are supposed to be in the world but not of the world and we are supposed to enjoy living for the Lord and according to his teachings. When we start to enjoy things that the world is in love with, we are dangerously out of touch with the Spirit of God.

Just how serious are the consequences of not caring much about the potential for TV's harmful affects?

Prov 1:29-33 - "For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil."

Is TV helping me to be like Christ?

1 John 2:15-16 - "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world."

2 Tim 2:16 - "But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness."

What is the best place to seek out profane and vain babblings if not on television where the vain wares and the ungodly wisdom of the world are peddled 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Does TV help me to hear God's voice?

Isa 6:8 - "Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me."

Has TV become an idol or unclean thing in my life?

2 Cor 6:16-17 - "And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you"

Am I seeking rest from the wrong source?

Many people feel that watching TV helps them unwind from a weary day. After all the scriptures we've looked at, can we say that TV is an appropriate place to turn for rest for our weary soul? Isn't it the Lord we should be going to in prayer and in the Word?...

Exod 33:14 - "And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest."

Also, shouldn't we at times turn to other believers?...

2 Cor 1:4 - "Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

Gal 6:2 - "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ."

If we are finding peace, rest and comfort in front of a TV set, perhaps we should be examining ourselves to see if we are in the faith. It is one thing to need physical rest and quite another thing entirely to willingly and repeatedly expose oneself to things that grieve a thrice-holy God.

Once I've admitted to God what I should be doing with HIS time, what is the next step?

Luke 17:7-10 - "But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do."

If you've gotten this far in this study, Praise the Lord! I know that this is a very sensitive subject with many Christians today. If it is sensitive for you, ask yourself why? Why do I have a problem with a particular point mentioned above? Ask yourself: Would the Church of Jesus Christ in America be better off today without TV? Would I personally be better off without TV? Would my relationship to Christ suffer if I put my TV on the curb the next time the sanitation crew stopped by to pick up the garbage? Seriously! Is there really any way in which my relationship to Christ would suffer if TV (or whatever else may be consuming my 'spare' time) was removed from my life? If the honest answer is 'no', and I believe it is 'no', then we must ask ourselves: What is it doing in my life?

"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD,
choose you this day whom ye will serve"
[Joshua 24:15]

Hooded Penitents Celebrate Holy Week

SPAIN

March 26, 2013

EMILIO MORENATTI / AP

Penitents from San Gonzalo brotherhood take part in a procession in Seville, Spain on March 25, 2013.

While Holy Week is celebrated around the globe by Christians, Spain is renowned for a particularly colorful tradition: the procession of the nazareno penitents. Looking for all the world like they’re wearing the getup of the reviled Klu Klux Klan, the penitents are in fact covering their faces with hoods in order to publicly repent without being identified, in a tradition dating back to the 15th Century.

Celebrations take place throughout the country, with regional processions in Seville, Andalusia and Málaga being the most famous.

March across Brooklyn Bridge; 400 acts of ‘compassion’

More than 3,000 young Seventh-Day Adventists from ten states came together in Downtown Brooklyn on Saturday to rally against gun violence. Wearing T-shirts depicting two hands forming a heart and the word “Compassion,” the crowd heard speeches and prayed in Cadman Plaza Park and marched with drums, banners and flags over the Brooklyn Bridge to various stops in Manhattan, ending in Foley Square.

“We are tired of seeing violence in our streets, our communities and homes,” said Pastor Jose Cortez, Jr., Director of Adventist Youth Ministries for the Atlantic Union Conference. “We long for a day when children, women, elderly and all people can live peacefully and without fear of violence in this city. This is the reason we are marching today.

Let’s unite in making New York City the Capital of Compassion,” he added.

Mary Frost

“Violence is not the answer,” said Congresswoman Yvette Clark (D-Brooklyn’s 9th District). “When young people make their minds up, they can teach us all a lesson: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Clark said the Seventh-Day Adventists were “brilliant” in asking young people “to demonstrate what they learn every day in their congregations.”

Pastor Rohann Wellington, spokesperson for the Greater New York Conference, said the march was about creating change from “the depressing statistics of our community” suffering from “senseless acts of violence.”

More than 400 “compassionate meetings” took place across the city over the weekend, said Dr. Donald King, President of the Atlantic Union Conference. Some of these included packing meals for those hit by Superstorm Sandy, and donating blood. “We believe in walking the acts of compassion,” he said.

Seffner residents evacuated amid fear of new sinkhole

Posted: Mar 26, 2013 10:53 PM EDTUpdated: Mar 26, 2013 10:56 PM EDT
By: Deborah Bowden, FOX 13 News - bio

SEFFNER (FOX 13) -

Some Seffner residents fear there may be a sinkhole under their duplex on Peach Avenue. If confirmed, it would be the fourth sinkhole in the Seffner area in the past month -- including the one that swallowed Jeffrey Bush as he slept inside his home.

Jessica Alfaro knew right away something was wrong. She said the living room in her family's apartment is sloping, creaking and rubbery.

"If you were to touch it, it's going up and down and comes back up," she said.

Her wheelchair-bound father lives in the home with her, along with her brother, sister and newborn niece.

"She's like, 'does it sound like it's good?' I was like, no it doesn't. Once we sat down, so much noise started happening. I thought, this is crazy, I'm calling 911. They said it's time to get out," Alfaro said.

Fire crews checked it out and took every precaution before going inside. They put a ladder across the floor, and used rope to tether themselves to a telephone pole outside.

"The time is actually buckled up quite a bit," said Jessica Damico from Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. "It's not like a normal tile crack you would see. It's buckled up a few inches above the slab."

Outside, large cracks can be seen in the wall. Fire crews said they aren't sure what's causing it.

"It sounded hollow to them, but they're not sure if the tiles are just loose. It's beneath the tiles and the floor. Or if there's actually some holes beneath the slab," Damico said.

For Keith Simpson, who lives next door, it's a total shock. He came home to the scene after a 10-hour day at work.

"I just got to be calm about it and just pray. Hope everything will be alright," he said.

The duplex is more than two miles away from the sinkhole that killed Jeff Bush on March 1st. His brother jumped in the hole, but couldn't save him.

Engineers and geologists said efforts to try to recover his body were too dangerous. The sinkhole became his final resting place, in a story that drew attention from across the nation and worldwide.

An expert will come out to the home Wednesday morning to figure out if they're dealing with a sinkhole, or just some severe settling.

6.2 quake hits near Guatemala City

Guatemala City

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Guatemala City on Monday, but residents said they barely felt the temblor and authorities had no immediate reports of damages or deaths.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was located 3 miles (6 kilometres) northwest of San Jose Pinula and had a depth of 200 kilometres (124 miles).

"So far we have received no reports of damage and we're monitoring nationwide," said Mario Cruz, a spokesman for firefighters.

The quake was only 6 miles (9 kilometres) from Guatemala's capital, but was barely felt, perhaps because of its depth.

In November 2012, a magnitude-7.4 earthquake left 42 people dead in Guatemala. The quake, which was just 32 kilometres (20 mile) deep, was centred off the coastal town of Champerico. It was the strongest earthquake to hit Guatemala since a 1976 temblor that killed 23,000.

Earthquake Strikes Central Taiwan; One Dead, Some Factories Disrupted

03/27/2013| 05:23am US/Eastern

--Officials say collapsing wall kills one person

--TSMC says quake had "minimal impact" on production

(Recasts first paragraph to update with one person dead; adds new details of damage and factory disruptions throughout) By Aries Poon and Lorraine Luk

TAIPEI--An earthquake killed at least one person and disrupted operations at some electronics factories in central Taiwan on Wednesday morning, but the rest of the island was largely unscathed.

The Central Weather Bureau said that the magnitude 6.1 quake struck at 10:03 a.m. local time (0203 GMT) and was centered in Nantou County at a depth of 15.4 kilometers. Aftershocks as strong as magnitude 4.3 rattled the area for the next two and a half hours. The initial temblor shook buildings in the capital, Taipei, 120 kilometers to the north.

A collapsing wall killed a 72-year-old woman at a temple in Nantou County, the National Fire Agency said, adding that 19 other people across central Taiwan were injured, mostly by falling objects. The injured included one person struck by a section of ceiling at a government office in Nantou County, the fire agency said.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (>> Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg. Co. Ltd.), the world's largest contract chip maker by revenue, evacuated two of its factories in central and northern Taiwan after the earthquake. But a spokesman for the Hsinchu-based company said that employees had gone back to work and that the quake had a "minimal impact" on production.

TSMC added that it has an emergency mechanism that automatically orders employees to evacuate when an earthquake of magnitude 4 or greater is detected.

Flat-panel maker AU Optronics Cop. (>> AU Optronics Corp.) said Wednesday afternoon that operations at some of its facilities in central Taiwan remained suspended after halting because of the quake. Innolux Corp. (>> Innolux Corp) said that its production was unaffected.

At The Wall Street Journal's Taipei office the quake was felt for at least 15 seconds, shaking the ceiling violently enough that it squeaked.

Television footage showed large boulders littering roads in central Taiwan, as well as books scattered on the floor of a public library and home interiors sprinkled with broken glass, fallen wall tiles and other debris.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is frequently hit by earthquakes. The last major quake--a magnitude 7.6 temblor that killed more than 2,000 people--struck in 1999 and was also centered in Nantou County.

Health Canada rattled nerves south of the border last fall when it approved generic versions of OxyContin.

United States drug czar Gil Kerlikowske issued an alert to law-enforcement agencies, warning that “the potential exists for diversion into the United States because the old formulations, which are easier to abuse, are unavailable in the United States,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

“This alert seeks to raise awareness of this change with law enforcement along the Northern Border so law enforcement and border officials can work jointly to prevent diversion.”

Financial institutions that operate in the United States are required by law to file reports of “suspicious customer activity,” such as large money transfers or unusually structured bank accounts, to Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

The Federal Bureau of Investigation already has full access to the database. However, intelligence agencies, such as the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, currently have to make case-by-case requests for information to FinCEN.

The Treasury plan would give spy agencies the ability to analyze more raw financial data than they have ever had before ….

***

The planning document, dated March 4, shows that the proposal is still in its early stages of development, and it is not known when implementation might begin.

***

The plan calls for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence – set up after 9/11 to foster greater collaboration among intelligence agencies – to work with Treasury. The Director of National Intelligence declined to comment.

The excuse given for this intrusion on privacy?

As with the destruction of all of our privacies and other liberties, the excuse given is terrorism.

Indeed, given that the government claims the right to assassinate or indefinitely detain Americans without any due process of law, do you think government employees will hesitate in seizing the assets of Americans labels as “enemies?”

The government has done it before, and President Obama authorized seizure of property again last year.

And the government’s take-down of Megaupload was an exercise of the power to seize all of the legalproperty held in a storage facility because a handful of crooks have illegal property in theirs.

The Present Crisis

American Episcopal Women Bishops

By Mrs. E. G. White RH January 1, 1889

We feel deeply over the present state of the church whose members have long possessed a knowledge of those events which are to transpire near the close of time in fulfillment of prophetic history. Christ is coming in power and great glory, and the dead are to be “judged out of those things which are written in the books, according to their works.” The One who has stood as our intercessor; who hears all penitential prayers and confessions; who is represented with a rainbow, the symbol of grace and love, encircling his head, is soon to cease his work in the heavenly sanctuary. Grace and mercy will then descend from the throne, and justice will take their place. He for whom his people have looked will assume his right,—the office of Supreme Judge. “The Father ... hath committed all judgment unto the Son.... And he hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.” It was he, says Peter, who was ordained to “judge the quick [the living] and the dead.” “He hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained.”

The faith and patience of those who have waited long, have been sorely tried. “Hope deferred has made the heart sick;” and the cry has come up before God, “Lord, how long?” But now the signs are fulfilling,—nation rising against nation, startling calamities by land and by sea, famine, pestilence, fearful storms, sweeping floods, and great conflagrations. All these testify that we are approaching the grand consummation. The cry going up to God from the waiting ones, will not be in vain. The response will come, “It is done.” “He which is filthy, let him be filthy still; ... he that is holy, let him be holy still.” Can the church contemplate this hour with calm indifference?

The crisis is now upon us. The battle is to be waged between the Christianity of the Bible and the Christianity of human tradition. Is there not a criminal neglect in our present sleepy condition? There must be a decided advance movement among us. We must show to the world that we recognize, in the events that are now taking place in connection with the National Reform movement, the fulfillment of prophecy. That which we have, for the last thirty or forty years, proclaimed would come, is now here; and the trumpet of every watchman upon the walls of Zion should raise the alarm.

Prophecy represents Protestantism as having lamb-like horns, but speaking like a dragon. Already we are beginning to hear the voice of the dragon. There is a satanic force propelling the Sunday movement, but it is concealed. Even the men who are engaged in the work, are themselves blinded to the results which will follow their movement. Let not the commandment-keeping people of God be silent at this time, as though we gracefully accepted the situation. There is the prospect before us, of waging a continuous war, at the risk of imprisonment, of losing property and even life itself, to defend the law of God, which is being made void by the laws of men. This Bible text will be quoted to us, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers.... The powers that be are ordained of God.”

When the disciples preached Christ and him crucified, after his resurrection, the authorities commanded them not to speak any more nor to teach in the name of Jesus. “But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things we have seen and heard.” They continued to preach Jesus and him crucified, and afterward raised from the dead. The sick were healed, and thousands were added to the church. “Then the high priest rose up, and all that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and were filled with indignation, and laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.”

But the God of heaven the mighty Ruler of the universe, took this matter into his own hands; for men were warring against his work. He showed them plainly that there is a ruler above man, whose authority must be respected. The Lord sent his angel by night to open the prison doors; and he brought forth these men whom God had commissioned to do his work. Thus we see that these rulers were not in harmony with God’s word. Had they taken him into their counsel, they would not have commanded the disciples to do contrary to his will. The rulers said, “Speak not at all, nor teach in the name of Jesus;” but the heavenly messenger sent by God, said, “Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.”

Those who shall seek to compel men to observe an institution of the papacy, and trample upon God’s authority, are doing a work similar to that of the scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees in the days of the apostles. When the laws of earthly rulers are brought into opposition to the laws of the Supreme Ruler of the universe, then those who are God’s loyal subjects will be true to him.

The National Reform movement, that the world and the church have linked hands to bring about, will manifest the same oppression, haughtiness, arrogance, and intolerance which have prevailed in past ages. The powers of human councils then assumed the prerogatives of Deity, crushing under their despotic will, liberty of conscience and the right of individual responsibility; and imprisonment, exile, and death followed for all who opposed their dictates.

Many will plead that there is no prospect that popery will ever be revived. If it shall regain its lost ascendancy, it will be by Protestantism’s giving it the right hand of fellowship. If it shall be legislated into power by the concessions of time-serving men, the fires of persecution will be rekindled against those who will not sacrifice conscience and the truth for the errors of the papacy. Once let the minds of the Christian world be turned away from God; let his law be dishonored and his holy day trampled upon, and they will be ready to take any step where Satan may lead the way.

Some urge that the Catholic religion is not what it once was; that the principles to which Protestants could not concede, and indignantly rose up to war against, were held by Catholics in the days of their ignorance and barbarism. They say that the present high mental development of the people would never allow them to adopt the plan of action carried out in the past,—compelling the conscience upon religious subjects. But there is nothing in the Scriptures to assure us against the reinstatement of popery. Protestants today are a self-sufficient, world-loving people; but they must have some religion, and prefer that consisting of forms and outward display, rather than the simplicity of the true religion of Jesus Christ. They are too wise in their own conceit to seek God for counsel and direction,—to open the Guide Book which points them to the only way that leads to heaven. They close their hearts to Jesus in his humiliation, self-denial, and self-sacrifice, and open the door to the delusions of Satan.

While the Protestant world is, by her attitude, making concessions to Rome, we should arouse to comprehend the situation, and view the contest before us in its true bearings. While men have slept, Satan has been stealthily sowing the tares. Let the watchmen now lift up their voice like a trumpet, and give the message which is present truth for this time. Let them know where we are in prophetic history, that the spirit of true Protestantism may awaken all the world to a sense of the value of the privileges of religious liberty so long enjoyed.

This nation has been highly favored of God. It has been the great center of religious light and liberty. O, do not sleep now, and in your inactivity feel that you are doing the will of God! The experience of God’s commandment-keeping people now should correspond with the events that are crowding upon us.

It should be the business of all the righteous in the land, as they see signs of the approach of peril, to arouse to action, and not sit in calm expectation of ruin, comforting themselves with the belief that this work must go on, because prophecy has foretold it, and that the Lord will shelter his people in the day of trial. Effectual, fervent prayers should be ascending to Heaven, that this calamity may be deferred; for we are not ready to meet it.

Every passing hour now is one of activity in the heavenly courts, to make ready a people upon the earth to act a part in the great scenes that are soon to open upon us. These transient moments, that seem of so little value to us, are weighty with eternal interests. They are molding the destiny of souls for everlasting life or everlasting death. The words we utter today in the ears of the people, the works we are doing, the spirit of the message we are bearing, will be to human souls the savor of life unto life or of death unto death. We must be washing our robes of character in the blood of the Lamb. If we would be saints above, we must first be saints below.

We have lost much time in inaction, because we have not realized the time in which we are living. This we deplore, and would humble our souls before God, pleading with him for pardon for sleeping at our post of duty, and allowing the enemy to gain the advantage over us. Many have chosen to do nothing, when they should have been diligent to repulse the enemy. Let your services now be dedicated to God. Gird on the armor for vigorous work, saying, “Here am I, Lord, send me.”

It is essential that we be much in prayer to God, that his voice and his power may be manifested in behalf of his people, and that the angels may hold the four winds until the truth is more fully proclaimed, and the servants of God are sealed in their foreheads. God is not pleased with the attitude of his people. Satan is taking the world captive, and the sentinels for God and the truth are letting him do it. “Watch then, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” Arouse, and come to the front. Be stanch to defend your religious liberty.

Many of our people are registered in the books of heaven as slothful servants. They have buried their talents of money and capability in the world, and the work they should have done has been left undone. Some to whom the Lord has intrusted means, have been ease-lovers, and have not done their duty in the fear and love of God. Many have left the smaller churches, to unite with larger ones, where they carry no burden of responsibility, and are only in the way. Such lose their spirituality and vital force, because they do comparatively nothing for the truth. What account will these have to give to the Master when he shall say, “Give account of thy stewardship”?

We are not ready for this great issue to which the enforcement of the Sunday law will bring us. Let the members of our churches become missionaries for the Master; let them not linger in ease and indifference; but let them go forth to work for God. Their spiritual muscles have been nearly palsied with inaction. Go without the camp, bearing the reproach for Christ and the truth. Work today in the Lord’s vineyard. Go out into the highways and hedges, and stir up the people to investigate the truth. Woe to all who profess to walk in the light, yet who are at ease in Zion. They absorb the God-given rays of righteousness, but do not diffuse the light to others. The parable of the faithless servant who hid his Lord’s money, condemns them, and they are classed among those who refuse to be co-laborers with Jesus Christ, selfishly caring for their own ease, and leaving those for whom Christ has died, to perish without the knowledge of the truth which God has graciously given to them. Those who have been the receivers of spiritual light, may become the receptacles of darkness, to whom the words of Christ are applicable, “If therefore the light which is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!”

“But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.” May this statement be true of God’s people, to whom he has committed the sacred trust of the knowledge of his law. “Yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night; for when they shall say, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them.” Just when many who have had light and evidence are saying, “Where is the promise of his coming?” and declaring that all things continue as they were from the beginning, the terrible realities of the day of God will burst upon them. Marvelous beyond expression is the blindness of the people of this generation.

Every true child of God should now be inquiring, “What wouldst thou have me to do? Brethren, for Christ’s sake, do something, and do it now. Satanic influences are all around us, to be met and resisted. The tares are mingled with the wheat, error with truth, coldness with zeal, darkness with light. There must be a returning to our first love. We must battle nobly with tribulation and danger, in the midst of trials, tests, and provings of God. We must be rich in faith and good works. The message to the Laodicean church is applicable to those who have been made the repository of rich truth. This church is distinguished in prophecy by its great profession of advanced light; yet it was filled with spiritual pride and lukewarmness in religion. They had a religious theory, but were greatly lacking in moral power and holiness. They are pronounced wretched, poor, blind, and naked. O that our people would realize the danger, and heed the counsel of the True Witness, “Buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed; ... and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see.”

Will we now, who have such great light, make some sacrifice for Jesus, who for our sakes became poor, that we through his poverty might be made rich? We must arouse, and through piety and earnest work for the Master, partake of his spirit of love for souls, of faith in God, that he may work with us, by us, and through us.

Pope Francis Asks Jesuits to, with Completely Committed Life, Be Leaven to World (VIS)

POPE FRANCIS ASKS JESUITS TO, WITH COMPLETELY COMMITTED LIFE, BE LEAVEN TO WORLD

Vatican City, 23 March 2013 (VIS) – Three days after beginning his pontificate, Pope Francis sent a letter to the Superior General of the Jesuits, Fr. Adolfo Nicolas Pachon. In it the Holy Father responded to the letter that the Superior General had sent to him on learning of the election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the first Jesuit in the history of the Society of Jesus to be elected Pope.

Following is the complete text of the Roman Pontiff Francis' letter, dated 16 March:

“Dear Fr. Nicolas, It is with great joy that I received the kind letter that you sent on behalf of yourself and of the Society of Jesus on the occasion of my election to the See of St. Peter, informing me of your prayers for me and my apostolic ministry along with your complete willingness to continue your unconditional service to the Church and to the Vicar of Christ, according to the precepts of St. Ignatius of Loyola.”
“I thank you cordially for this token of appreciation and closeness, which I reciprocate with pleasure, asking the Lord to enlighten and accompany all Jesuits so that—faithful to the charism received and the footsteps of the saints of our beloved Order, by their pastoral activity but above all through the witness of lives entirely devoted to the service of the Church, the Bride of Christ—they may be evangelical leaven to the world, tirelessly seeking the glory of God and the good of souls.”

“With these sentiments I ask all Jesuits to pray for me and entrust me to the loving protection of Mary, our Mother in Heaven, while, as a pledge of abundant heavenly favours, I impart with special fondness my Apostolic Blessing, which I also extend to all those who work with the Society of Jesus in their activities, benefit from their good works, and partake of their spirituality.”

1 in 5 city preteens have mental woes

By CARL CAMPANILE

EXCLUSIVE

More than 145,000 city children — roughly one in five — between 6 and 12 struggle with mental illness or other emotional woes, a new study has found.

The city Health Department’s analysis shows that 6 percent of kids in that age range have been diagnosed with ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and other behavioral problems. That’s 44,000 children.

A survey of parents also reveals that 14 percent of undiagnosed kids — about 101,000 children in that age group — “have difficulties with emotions, concentration, behavior or getting along with others.”

Furthermore, it’s likely that the severity of mental-health problems among youngsters is even worse than indicated. Survey limitations don’t capture the full extent of the problem, officials said.

“Undiagnosed conditions were not captured in Child Community Health Survey data. Therefore, prevalence estimates . . . likely underestimate true rates of mental-health conditions,” the study said.

Officials said mental illness is underreported because social stigma prevents parents from seeking help, they don’t recognize certain behaviors as a mental-health problem, or the child’s behavior does not interfere with others. Also, access to a health-care professional may be limited.

The survey, based on 2009 data and funded with support from singer Paul Simon’s Children’s Health Fund, showed that:

* ADHD was the most common diagnosis: 4 percent, or 26,000 children.

* Oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder was the second-most common: 2 percent, or 15,000 children.

* Boys are three times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with a mental illness — 9 percent to 3 percent.

The study pointed to lapses in treatment. Only two-thirds of kids with a mental-disorder diagnosis received medical help in the prior year, including 36 percent who received medication. Only 17 percent of kids whose parents identified them as having behavioral problems got assistance.

Identification and treatment of mental illness is crucial in helping children adapt and function.

For example, children with behavioral problems were six times more likely to have a learning disability in school and twice as likely to suffer from other health ailments, such as asthma and sleep deprivation.

The Health Department insisted the city rates were in line with national figures. The department also said it offers extensive mental services through its Family Resource Centers and public-school clinics.

It encourages families to call the 24-hour hot line LifeNet (1-800-543-3638) to connect to services.

“Over 400 schools offer mental-health services, either as part of school-based health centers or via dedicated mental-health clinics,” said a Health Department spokesman, Sam Miller.

The Dangers of Wi-Fi

The Dangers of Wi-Fi (WiFi Side Effects Wifi WLAN Electromagnetic Radiation Wireless Internet EMF)

HealthRanger7

Uploaded on Feb 21, 2012

Wi-Fi connects electronic devices to wireless computer networks (wireless LAN) using electromagnetic radiation. Wi-Fi is installed in homes, schools, offices, stores, hotels, coffee shops, airports, libraries, hospitals, public buildings and even entire sections of cities. Wi-Fi signals are, unlike TV and radio signals, strong enough to penetrate concrete walls. Many health experts consider Wi-Fi radiation to be dangerous.

Wi-Fi technology is used by personal computers, laptops, smartphones, tablets, Bluetooth hands-free handsets, wireless video game consoles, MP3 players, smart meters and other wireless applications.

Wi-Fi signals use a frequency of 2.4 GHz, nearly identical to the frequency of microwave ovens (2.45 GHz) and similar to those of mobile or cell phones (GSM phones use 1.8 or 1.9 GHz and the UMTS 3G phones use 2.1 GHz).
http://mrfizix.com/home/light_files/i...

Since Wi-Fi is so recent, no studies have yet been done on the long-term health effects of Wi-Fi. However, thousands of studies have been done on the health effects of mobile phones and mobile phone masts. These studies have found that mobile phone radiation can cause cancer!
http://bbc.co.uk/news/health-13608444

The health dangers of Wi-Fi radiation are commonly dismissed because Wi-Fi is so convenient. However, scientific studies suggest that prolonged exposure to the low-level electromagnetic radiation can cause many health problems.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes...

Wi-Fi radiation penetrates the body, affects cell membranes and over time cells to lose their ability to function properly. Wi-Fi radiation disturbs the body's natural energy field causing stress, fatigue and a weakened immune system. Wi-Fi radiation can cause headaches, concentration problems, dizziness, anxiety, memory loss, depression, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rates, seizures, epilepsy, nausea, skin rashes, insomnia, ringing ears, high blood pressure, brain damage, autism, diabetes, fibromyalgia, infertility, birth defects, DNA damage, leukemia, cancer, etc.
http://safespaceprotection.com/harmfu...

Children are especially vulnerable to Wi-Fi radiation signals because their nervous systems and brains are still developing. Their skulls are thinner and smaller, so the radiation penetrates their brains more deeply. Many schools are now using Wi-Fi but this is negatively affecting the learning abilities of children!
http://safeschool.ca

If you have Wi-Fi at home and your children use laptops or play wireless video games they are living in a virtual soup of electromagnetic radiation, exposing them to many health risks. Most Wi-Fi routers and modems don't get turned off at night and thus homes are flooded with radiation 24/7.

Other sources of electromagnetic radiation are cordless phones and baby monitors. These devices use DECT technology (similar to Wi-Fi) with frequencies of 1.9, 2.4 and 5.8 GHz.

Contrary to claims of the Wi-Fi industry, Wi-Fi radiation is NOT safe!

Turn off Wi-Fi in your home for 60 days and discover how your health will improve!

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."

PM Mikati's Resignation Throws Lebanon into Turmoil

Updated: MAR 25, 2013

The resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has sparked off some violent clashes in his hometown of Tripoli.
Lebanon's state news agency NNA reports Alawite and Sunni Muslims threw rocks and fired bullets at each other over the weekend injuring at least three people.
Mikati stood down last Friday after the deeply divided cabinet failed to approve a commission that would oversee elections slated for June as well as a range of other disagreements.
Lebanon has been in the grips of deep instability due to the turmoil in neighboring Syria.
Alawite Muslims support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Sunnis want him out.

SDA pastor wants US Gov't to stem flow of guns into the island

Control your weapons!

BY HORACE HINES Observer West reporter

Thursday, March 21, 2013

MONTEGO BAY, St James — PASTOR of the Granville Seventh-day Adventist Church, Charles Brevitt, has called on the United States Government to contain the trafficking of illegal guns into the island with the same fervour with which they are insisting that the Jamaican Government control the lottery scam and the illegal narcotics trade.

"They are allowing guns to leave up there (US) and come down here. We feel that reciprocity ought to be the order of the day. We will control scamming, they must control guns," the tough-talking clergyman charged.
