The Great Controversy or The Great Hope?

Early 1900's - Ellen G. White stated:

"The Great Controversy should be very widely circulated. It contains the story of the past, the present, and the future. In its outline of the closing scenes of this earth's history, it bears a powerful testimony in behalf of the truth. I am more anxious to see a wide circulation for this book than for any others I have written, for in The Great Controversy, the last message of warning to the world is given more distinctly than in any of my other books." -- Letter 281, 1905 (quoted in Colporteur Ministry, p. 127.)

The Great Controversy
Between Christ and Satan
The Conflict of the Ages in the Christian Dispensation

(678 pages)

Throughout Christendom, Protestantism was menaced by formidable foes. The first triumphs of the Reformation past, Rome summoned new forces, hoping to accomplish its destruction. At this time the order of the Jesuits was created, the most cruel, unscrupulous, and powerful of all the champions of popery. Cut off from earthly ties and human interests, dead to the claims of natural affection, reason and conscience wholly silenced, they knew no rule, no tie, but that of their order, and no duty but to extend its power. (See Appendix.) The gospel of Christ had enabled its adherents to meet danger and endure suffering, undismayed by cold, hunger, toil, and poverty, to uphold the banner of truth in face of the rack, the dungeon, and the stake. To combat these forces, Jesuitism inspired its followers with a fanaticism that enabled them to endure like dangers, and to oppose to the power of truth all the weapons of deception. There was no crime too great for them to commit, no deception too base for them to practice, no disguise too difficult for them to assume. Vowed to perpetual poverty and humility, it was their studied aim to secure wealth and power, to be devoted to the overthrow of Protestantism, and the re-establishment of the papal supremacy.

When appearing as members of their order, they wore a garb of sanctity, visiting prisons and hospitals, ministering to the sick and the poor, professing to have renounced the world, and bearing the sacred name of Jesus, who went about doing good. But under this blameless exterior the most criminal and deadly purposes were often concealed. It was a fundamental principle of the order that the end justifies the means. By this code, lying, theft, perjury, assassination, were not only pardonable but commendable, when they served the interests of the church. Under various disguises the Jesuits worked their way into offices of state, climbing up to be the counselors of kings, and shaping the policy of nations. They became servants to act as spies upon their masters. They established colleges for the sons of princes and nobles, and schools for the common people; and the children of Protestant parents were drawn into an observance of popish rites. All the outward pomp and display of the Romish worship was brought to bear to confuse the mind and dazzle and captivate the imagination, and thus the liberty for which the fathers had toiled and bled was betrayed by the sons. The Jesuits rapidly spread themselves over Europe, and wherever they went, there followed a revival of popery.

To give them greater power, a bull was issued re-establishing the inquisition. (See Appendix.) Notwithstanding the general abhorrence with which it was regarded, even in Catholic countries, this terrible tribunal was again set up by popish rulers, and atrocities too terrible to bear the light of day were repeated in its secret dungeons. In many countries, thousands upon thousands of the very flower of the nation, the purest and noblest, the most intellectual and highly educated, pious and devoted pastors, industrious and patriotic citizens, brilliant scholars, talented artists, skillful artisans, were slain or forced to flee to other lands.

The Great Controversy

What does it take to live with hope amid epic natural disasters, wars, terrorism, nuclear proliferation, political revolutions, chronic global pain and dizzying information overload?

Facing future with so many unknowns, even our most trusted authorities and commentators cannot agree about the next act of the cosmic drama. Where can we find solid information about how to be safe with our loved ones on an earth in crisis? We need what Albert Einstein described as “holy curiosity”. Such curiosity compels us to discover what lies before us in view of what has happened in the past.

The Great Hope - full version

The book you have here is a time-tested classic of both history and prophecy—exploring what God will do in the future in light of His past interaction with humanity. Although written more than a century ago, The Great Hope offers cutting-edge insights for the 21st century. The author, Ellen White, is the most published woman of all time -- she wrote 40 books. One of them was translated into more than 140 languages.

Oops, - we shouldn’t tell you how the book ends. With ‘holy curiosity,’ you can discover it for yourself!
P.S. As you enjoy these chapters, remember that they were written in the context of the 19th century. Since then, some of the author’s concerns have been addressed by Christian leaders of insight and integrity. (For example, Roman Catholics have become more involved with Scripture while maintaining their longtime heritage of ministry to suffering people everywhere.)

Testimony of a Sikh to Christianity through reading the book Great Controversy

Uploaded on Apr 13, 2009

Testimony of Manjit

Was formerley a Sikh and became a Christian from Reading the book Great Controversy.

Do you understand what you believe in? Do you understand why you do certain things? These questions were posed to me sometime ago. In fact it was my brother who asked me. At first I ignored him, then I did ask myself the question and was horrified with the answers. I feel convicted to tell you my story just how it happened.

I am from a Sikh background, my parents brought me up to believe in God and to trust him, and to be good, but I was never able to be a strict practising Sikh. I would pray to God often and ask him for his help but I was never prepared to do anything for him in return.

In 1988 while studying at university I went home one weekend to visit my family. I was very close with my family especially with my brother. To my horror he had changed in just a short period of time from when I last met him. He started preaching about God to the family. My brother had completely changed, and I thought he had gone mad. Although I believed in God I thought it was to severe to be completely religious in the 1980's, I thought God would understand. However I have always had convictions to come close to God but I always thought I was never good enough to become holy, or that it would not be practical in a society such as ours, besides I thought I was good enough to enter heaven.

Apparently a couple of weeks earlier on a training course he was put next to a christian who was putting together some bible studies during lunch times on his computer, about the end of the world. This subject has always fascinated me and my brother, and so his curiosity got the better of him. He started asking him questions and then they became friends. Now when he told me that, I thought he had gone mad because he was speaking a lot about Jesus to me. I thought this christian guy had hypnotised my brother.

Then he challenged the family. He asked us "Do you really understand what you believe in?" and "How do you know you are going to be saved?" I thought it was a silly question, my father just laughed at the question and my mother told him to shut up. However I listened because I knew in the past that my brother wasn't stupid but a sensible intelligent and logical person, so I eventually gave him the benefit of the doubt. I did't really want to answer him, so he asked me one other question, "How do you know that Sikhism can save you? When all the other religions claim the same thing but all contradict Sikhism?". We then talked for a long time on religion....

Who Really Runs the World? Conspiracies, Hidden Agendas & the Plan for World Government

May 22, 2013 | By admin

Andrew Gavin Marshall, New Dawn
Waking Times

A Historical Understanding of Power

In answering the question “Who Runs the World?” we must understand what positions within society hold the most power, and thus, the answer becomes clear. If we simply understand this as heads of state, the answer will be flawed and inaccurate. We must examine the globe as a whole, and the power structures of the global political economy.

The greatest position of power within the global capitalist system lies in the authority of money-creation: the central banking system. The central banking system, originating in 1694 in England, consists of an international network of central banks that are privately owned by wealthy shareholders and are granted governmental authority to print and issue a nation’s currency, and set interest rates, collecting revenue and making profit through the interest charged. Central banks give loans to both governments and industries, controlling both simultaneously. The ultimate centre of power in the central banking system is at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), in Basle, Switzerland; which is the central bank to the world’s central banks, and is also a private bank owned by the world’s central banks.

As Georgetown University history professor Carroll Quigley wrote:

[T]he powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent private meetings and conferences. The apex of the system was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basle, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the world’s central banks which were themselves private corporations.1

.

P.S.
The problem with articles such as this is that they always fail to identify the head of this multifaceted international octopus.  This does a great disservice to the reader, and actually further conceals the culprits (in plain sight) ...  Though they vaguely make occassional reference to its agents.  - Arsenio.

Being against marriage equality doesn’t make you a monster

GENDER

MAY 17, 2013

LGBT PC

BY MICHAEL KINSLEY

One reason the idea of gay marriage, or “marriage equality,” spread so fast is that it seems obvious once you think about it. It was a genuinely new idea when it first appeared in this publication in 1989. As was not the case with civil rights for African Americans, feminism, or for that matter gay rights themselves, there was no long history of opposition to be overcome. The challenge was simply getting people to think about it a bit.

Not everyone was immediately persuaded. In March, Ben Carson appeared on Fox News’ “Hannity” show to talk about gay marriage. Carson is the latest Great Black Hope for the Republican Party, which is quickly running out of African American conservatives to make famous. But Carson’s appearance was not a success. He should have left bestiality out of it. And any reference to NAMBLA—the “North American Man / Boy Love Association”—is pretty good evidence that we have left the realm of rational discussion and entered radio talk-show territory. This alleged organization exists—if indeed it exists at all—for the sole purpose of being attacked by Republicans and conservatives on talk radio and television.

Sweden riots spread to south of capital

Stockholm unrest spreads to south of city as violence continues into fourth night

Unrest in Stockholm’s suburbs continued for a fourth night as rioters showed their anger over a police shooting a week ago by setting fire to cars and buildings and pelting emergency workers with stones.

As many as 30 cars burned in the Swedish capital’s southern suburbs, while 11 were set alight in the Husby area, north of the city centre, where the violence broke out four days ago, police spokesman Kjell Lindgren said by phone today. Police detained one person, a 16-year-old girl suspected of preparing an act of arson. That followed eight arrests since Tuesday.

“While the situation has become better in Husby, where a lot of local people have become engaged to calm things down, the situation has intensified on the southern side of the city,” Mr Lindgren said.

The Irish Times takes no responsibility for the content or availability of other websites.

“We’re hoping that there will be moderation also in the southern parts but we will continue to show our presence in the suburbs with strengthened resources.”

The unrest started May 19th in Husby - an area constructed in the 1970s and dotted with high-rise apartment blocks - about a week after police killed a 69-year-old man brandishing a knife.

Sweden, where immigrants bear the brunt of Scandinavia’s highest unemployment rate, has suffered similar bouts of unrest before. In 2008, rioters in Rosengaard in the southern city of Malmoe clashed with police after setting fire to cars and bins.

Those riots also spread to Stockholm’s Tensta and Husby suburbs. Last night, firemen trying to rescue a restaurant in Skogaas were attacked by stone-throwing youths. Police officers were also attacked in Husby.

Several other suburbs also reported vandalism and fires.

Three police officers suffered minor injuries from rocks, Mr Lindgren said. None of them required hospital care, he said. In Raagsved, 11 people were also detained before being taken away in police buses.

Police are working to identify more rioters, many of whom were masked. There were similar scenes on Tuesday, when about 30 cars were set on fire in some of Sweden’s most ethnically diverse suburbs, also including Norsborg and Vaarberg.

A Husby school and a cultural centre were set alight while bins burned across other suburbs. A school was set on fire in Skaerholmen and a police station and buildings in central Jakobsberg were vandalised. The average age of people arrested on Tuesday was about 20, police said. Unemployment is higher among immigrants in Stockholm than residents born in Sweden.

Among immigrants from countries outside the European Union, the percentage of people out of work or in job programs was 16.5 per cent in 2011, compared with 5.7 per cent for ethnic Swedes, according to Statistics Sweden. Last year, 23 per cent of municipal Stockholm’s 881,235 inhabitants came from outside Sweden, the same percentage as in Gothenburg.

Pope Francis to Atheists: 'Just Do Good'

Thursday, 23 May 2013 09:17 AM

By Courtney Coren

Pope Francis says that atheists should be embraced as good people if they do good, and that all people, whether religious or not, should be able to work together.

The papal leader made the comments during the homily of his daily morning Mass Wednesday, during which he spoke without prepared remarks, according to The Guardian newspaper in London.

The comments came in the context of a story he told about a Catholic who asked if Jesus had redeemed atheists.

"Even them, everyone," the Pope explained on Vatican Radio. "We all have the duty to do good. ... Just do good, and we'll find a meeting point."

Pope Francis' remarks run contrary to those of Pope Benedict, who was often criticized by non-Catholics for giving the impression that he saw them as second-class believers, the Guardian noted.

Bronx 'ghetto' tours stop amid residents' outrage

By VERENA DOBNIK, Associated Press

Updated 6:38 am, Thursday, May 23, 2013

The former Samuel B. White mansion, in the 1850's Greekl Revival style, survives in the Longwood Historic District, in The Bronx borough of New York, Wednesday, May 22, 2013. A company that offered tourist treks to the Bronx "ghetto" has shut down under scathing criticism from neighborhood leaders offended by the tours that took mostly European and Australian tourists past food-pantry lines and "pickpocket" park. But other New York companies continue to show visitors, many of them foreigners who know of the Bronx only from movies, the grittiest part of the city's poorest borough. Photo: Richard Drew

NEW YORK (AP) — A company that promised sightseer tours to the Bronx that included a New York City "ghetto" has stopped the bus rides under protest from an outraged neighborhood.

Real Bronx Tours, which took mostly European tourists from Manhattan to see life in the South Bronx "from a safe distance," issued a statement this week saying it would immediately cease all tours there.

Three times a week, the $45 ride took visitors past food-pantry lines, a housing project and a park a guide described as a pickpocket hangout.

Tourists were told they'd get a look at the Bronx that reflects one of the darkest chapters of the city's history, the 1970s and '80s, when the tour website said "this borough was notorious for drugs, gangs, crime and murders."

The Bronx lost hundreds of buildings to fires intentionally set by landlords to collect insurance money, hence the phrase, "the Bronx is burning."

But residents say the tours are a misrepresentation of the area where former Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor lived in as children.

"Those days are over, the Bronx is being rebuilt, it's rising again," said Bronx resident and Grammy-nominated musician Bobby Sanabria.

On Monday, Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and City Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito sent an open letter to the company owner, Michael Myers, saying they were "sickened by the despicable way" the borough was being portrayed to outsiders.

"We strongly urge you to stop profiting off of a tour that misrepresents the Bronx as a haven for poverty and crime, while mocking everything from our landmarks to the less fortunate members of our community who are availing themselves of food assistance programs."

The tour company did not respond to calls and emails requesting comment. It was not clear whether they would resume any of their tours. And by Thursday, the website of the company was no longer accessible.

Other companies in the city still offer regular guided trips to the Bronx.

Three weeks ago, NYC & Company, the city's tourism bureau, launched a promotion of the South Bronx as "one of our safest, most exciting boroughs," with highlights including Art Deco architecture and the Yankees.

Real Bronx Tours has been booted from the bureau's membership list as a result of the language they've been using, NYC & Company spokeswoman Kimberly Spell said.

Elena Martinez, an anthropologist and Bronx resident, offers visitors walks through the same neighborhood that was on Real Bronx Tours' itinerary.

The human struggles on these still gritty streets have produced urban styles and sounds copied around the world, from hip hop music and outdoor murals to clothing.

"Many young Europeans come here as a pilgrimage," Martinez said. "This was the incubator for hip-hop, salsa, jazz, Afro-Cuban music, R&B."

She points to theaters, lavish dance halls and clubs where salsa came alive, along with some of the biggest names in music. Sanabria, a famed drummer, says he comes from a borough "that has an incredible, majestic music culture."

And although many of the buildings now house stores and offices, or were demolished or burned down, new ones mingle with restored historic ones "and people are helping to bring the neighborhood back," Martinez said.

"We've had enough of the gawkers who come to ghettoize us," says Al Quinones, caretaker of a community park that features a garden with fruit trees and a stone outdoor amphitheater. "Their timing was bad. The Bronx is not burning, not now! Now, it's resurgence."

On the door to his shack on the grounds is a sign that reads: "Don't dump on the Bronx."

Sanabria, Martinez and other Bronx residents are meeting Friday to kick-start a counter-campaign to what they call the Bronx's "negative image."

They've calling their action "Bronx Rising."

Wall Street tries to buck global sell-off

MAY 23, 2013

BY BEN ROONEY, CNN

A wave of selling hit Wall Street early Thursday as markets tumbled from Tokyo to London, but the U.S. stock losses ebbed in early trading.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.3%, the S&P 500 slid 0.5%, and the Nasdaq sank 0.4%

The declines were modest compared with overseas markets.

Japan was by far the hardest hit. The Nikkei sunk 7.3%. Stocks in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Syndey and Singapore also fell. European markets were all down 2% or more.

The global sell-off was triggered by worse-than-expected Chinese data that showed manufacturing slowed for the first time in seven months, and the latest minutes from the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting.

"We fear that this may get very ugly, very quickly," wrote Dennis Gartman, editor and publisher of daily financial newsletter The Gartman Letter. He said the big move lower in Japanese stocks could set the stage for a further fall of 7% to 10%.

U.S. stocks erased an early rally Wednesday as investors faced mixed messages from the Federal Reserve about when its bond buying program might end.

Economic bright spots: the Department of Labor reported that initial claims for unemployment benefits fell to 340,000 last week, down from 363,000 the week before.

Separately, new home sales rose 2.3% in April compared with the month prior, according to government data.

Eye on retail: Shares of Ralph Lauren slumped after the retailer failed to meet lowered revenue forecasts, even as earnings jumped 35%.

Gap and Sears Holdings are up after the bell.

Shares of Hewlett-Packard surged about 11% after the PC-maker reported quarterly earnings that beat estimates.

Shares of Tesla nudged higher, a day after the electric car maker announced that it had repaid a $465 million loan from the government nearly a decade before it was scheduled to do so.

“Prevention is key,” said Detective Vivian Hernandez.

Prevention takes a lot of planning, which started not long after last year’s festivities ended... . .

Riddles in Stone: The Secret Architecture of Washington D.C. explores the highly controversial subject of the design of America's capital. Was the city built to reflect the majesty of America's newfound freedom? Or the hidden agenda of secret societies? With every major cornerstone laid by Freemasons, was the city built in a Masonic pattern?

Embark upon this incredible journey as Riddles interviews experts on both sides of a heated debated. Watch as Freemason apologists defend some of the most direct and hard-hitting questions concerning the influency of Masonry in America, and its symbolism in Washington, D.C. Alongside them are leading researchers who maintain that occult architecture permeates the city, and conceals a secret agenda.

Is there really a pentagram in the street layout north of the White House? Does a Masonic square and compass extend from the Capitol building to the Washington Monument? And why is the city filled with Zodiac symbols, mysterious faces and various god and goddess images? If America was founded as a Christian nation, where are the images of Jesus Christ? Or is it possible that Washington D.C. symbolizes another Christ, the Masonic Christ? Find out, in this bold and sure-to-be controversial documentary!

Stockholm hit by third day of rioting

Rioting spread across Stockholm's suburbs on Wednesday in the third day of unrest to hit the Swedish capital, as Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt blamed the violence on "hooliganism" and appealed for calm.

Stockholm police began rounding up suspected ringleaders behind the riots, leaving cars and buildings ablaze. The unrest is believed to have been sparked the deadly police shooting last week of an elderly man.

On Tuesday night, gangs of young men set fire to more than 30 cars across the Swedish capital, pelted police and firefighters with stones, and burnt a historic 17th century house to the ground.

"Last night we caught four of them, and hopefully we are going to make some more arrests today, because we recognise who they are," said Kjell Lindgren, a spokesman for the Stockholm police.

The unrest began on Sunday night with protests in Husby against the death of a 69-year old man, who was shot by police in his apartment after approaching them brandishing a knife. Since then it has spread to other outlying districts to the north, west and south of Stockholm.

Mr Lindgren estimated that up to 300 young men were involved on Tuesday night.

"It's a disease that spread between suburbs here in Stockholm. It's copycats. We can't yet find any personal links between the riots in different suburbs."

Mr Reinfeldt put the unrest down to a small group of angry young men. "There is a core, as there often is, of young men who believe in using violence and who believe that this use of violence is above our democratic values and above Swedish law," he said.

But community activists blamed high youth unemployment and recent cuts to public services in Husby and the other affected areas.

"This is the kind of reaction when there isn't equality between people, which is the case in Sweden," said Rami al-Khamisi, a law student and founder of Megafonen, a community rights organisation.

Daniel Ghirmai, a municipal nightwatchman in Husby, claimed police had inflamed the situation with a heavy handed response on Sunday night, hitting some people with batons and calling them "monkeys", an accusation Mr Lindgren said he would be "very surprised" if was true.

A far-right French historian has killed himself at the altar of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris after declaring that more radical action was needed in opposition to same-sex marriage in France.

Dominique Venner, 78, walked into the building at 4pm and put a letter on the altar before shooting himself through the mouth, according to local media reports. Hundreds of visitors were immediately evacuated from the site, which is the most visited Catholic monument in Paris.

The motive for the suicide and the contents of the letter were not immediately clear, although Marine Le Pen, head of the far-right Front National, tweeted her "respect" for Venner and said his death was an "eminently political" gesture.

Manuel Valls, the French interior minister, arrived as officers cordoned off the site. He told French TV: "At the time of this act, the suicide of a desperate man, there were 1,500 people in the cathedral. These people were evacuated very quickly."

He said worshippers and tourists must have been in shock, adding: "Notre Dame is one of the most beautiful symbols of the capital and our country, and we can measure the impact of such an act."

The rector of Notre Dame, Monsignor Patrick Jacquin, said it was the first suicide in decades at the 850-year-old cathedral, which is visited by some 13 million people each year, and perhaps the first time anyone had taken their own life in the building. "It's unfortunate, it's dramatic and it's shocking," he said.

Venner, a historian and former member of the Secret Army Organisation that opposed Algerian independence in the early 1960s and waged a terror campaign against Charles de Gaulle's government, had written on his blog on Tuesday about his anger over the recent legalisation of same-sex marriage, which he called vile.

Referring to a rally planned for Sunday against the law, which also amended adoption rights, he said the demonstrators were "right to shout their impatience and anger".

He also wrote of what he described as the risk of "a France fallen to the power of Islamists", saying that for 40 years all governments and parties, except the Front National, businesses and the church had accelerated north African immigration. He added that there needed to be "new gestures, spectacular and symbolic" to "reawaken the memory of our origins". He added: "We're entering a time where words should be authenticated by actions."

The bill became law on Saturday after a parliament vote and months of street protests, political slanging matches and a rise in homophobic attacks.

François Hollande had made the legislation his flagship social reform, but the move triggered the biggest conservative and rightwing street protests in 30 years, followed by skirmishes near parliament that led to more than 200 arrests.

France is the ninth country in Europe and the 14th globally to legalise same-sex marriage. A concert to celebrate the law was scheduled to be held at Bastille in Paris on Tuesday night.

The country's first gay marriage is scheduled to take place in Montpellier, in the south, on 29 May between Vincent Autin, 40, who works in the tourist office, and Bruno Boileau, 30, a public sector employee.

More than 172 hours of heated debate in the parliament and senate meant the bill was one of the most debated in recent history, with furious clashes and a near fist-fight in the National Assembly.

One rightwing MP claimed the government was "killing children" by allowing same-sex married couples to adopt, while a senator said gay marriage would pave the way for people being able to marry animals or objects.

MPs in favour of the bill – the most significant social reform since France banned the death penalty in 1981 – suffered death threats; skinheads attacked a gay bar in Lille, while rights groups reported a surge in homophobic attacks.

One victim of such an attack, a Dutchman who lives in Paris, Wilfred de Brujin posted a picture of his bloodstained face on Facebook. The image was captioned: "Sorry to show you this. It's the face of homophobia."

High-Tech Guns Can Be Disabled Remotely

By Martha Mendoza

New technology aims to give wirelessly connected gun owners the ability to remotely engage or disengage the trigger safety on their personal firearms from anywhere in the world. The Yardarm system would trigger an alarm on an owner's cellphone if a gun is moved; the owner could then hit a button to activate the safety and disable the weapon.

A high-tech startup is wading into the gun control debate with a wireless controller that would allow gun owners to know when their weapon is being moved -- and disable it remotely.

The technology, but not an actual gun, was slated to be demonstrated Tuesday at a wireless technology conference in Las Vegas and was shown to The Associated Press in advance. It comes at a time when lawmakers around the U.S. are considering contentious smart gun laws that would require new guns to include high-tech devices that limit who can fire them.

The new Yardarm Technologies LLC system would trigger an alarm on an owner's cellphone if a gun is moved, and the owner could then hit a button to activate the safety and disable the weapon. New guns would come with a microchip on the body and antennas winding around the grip. It would add about $50 to the cost of a gun, and about $12 a year for the service.

"The idea is to connect gun owners more directly with their guns, no matter what the circumstance," said Yardarm CEO Robert Stewart.

The Yardarm system is one of several recently introduced high-tech offerings: the iGun only fires if it recognizes a ring on a finger, the Intelligun uses a fingerprint locking system and TriggerSmart uses radio frequency identification.

The first smart guns were proposed more than 20 years ago, but they failed to take off for several reasons: questionable technology, added costs and concerns from some gun rights about limitations on Second Amendment rights.

Recent high-profile shootings, combined with new technologies, have revived interest. Sandy Hook Promise, a nonprofit created by Newtown, Conn., community members, is offering venture capital for new gun safety technologies, and President Barack Obama included smart guns as part of his plan to reduce gun violence.

Stewart said his company has addressed privacy concerns about its system, which would not only include live tracking but also a history of where a gun has been. Yardarm has an exclusive telephony network to avoid hackers and spotty wireless systems, and gun owners could "self-destruct" the technology on the guns themselves if they wish, he said.

National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said his organization is concerned about added costs and the reliability of smart guns in general.

"We believe that the technology does not exist today where a so-called smart gun can operate with 100 percent or close to it reliability," he said, "and a firearm that does not function when it is required to is not a smart gun."

The added costs are "a luxury tax on self-defense," Arulanandam said.

At this point, there are no guns that can be wirelessly tracked or disabled, but there are systems that can locate and disable stolen cars. In 2011, one such company, OnStar LLC, came under fire for continuing to track customers' locations even after they discontinued their service. The company reversed the policy after a barrage of privacy complaints.

Last week, lawmakers in California and Massachusetts considered proposals to require gun makers to add high tech safety devices that allow only their owners to fire them. New Jersey has adopted a similar law.

Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the nonprofit Violence Policy Center, said his organization has no position on smart guns. However, he said he does oppose federal tax dollars for their research because they wouldn't impact the 310 million firearms already circulating in the U.S. today.

Fifty U.S. Religious Leaders Ask Boy Scouts to Maintain Existing Membership Standards

"These groups are invested in the future of scouting, rather than simply making a political statement." -- IRD President Mark Tooley

Contact: Jeff Walton, Institute on Religion and Democracy, 202-682-4131, 202-413-5639 cell, jwalton@TheIRD.org

WASHINGTON, May 22, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- Fifty U.S. religious leaders have signed a statement to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) encouraging the organization to continue its current leadership and membership standards, instead of a proposal to prohibit discrimination in membership based on "sexual orientation or preference." The discussion and vote are scheduled for May 23 at a national meeting of the BSA National Council.

The statement is signed by officials of the Southern Baptist Convention, Assemblies of God, Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, Anglican Church in North America, Evangelical Presbyterian Church and several Pentecostal denominations, among others. They represent churches whose memberships include over 20 million members.

The statement reads:

"We strongly support the Boy Scouts of America current prohibition on open homosexuality and retaining it without revision. Nearly 70 percent of BSA troops are hosted by churches and religious institutions. Upholding traditional morality is vital for sustaining this partnership, for protecting Scout members, and for ensuring BSA has a strong future. A proposal from the BSA board to prohibit 'discrimination' based on 'sexual orientation or preference' for BSA members potentially would open the Scouts to a wide range of open sexual expressions. In our current culture, it is more important than ever for our churches to protect and provide moral nurture for young people and for the Scouts. We implore members of the upcoming BSA Council to affirm the BSA's present policy, which the U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed, and which has served BSA well."A full list of signatories can be viewed here.

IRD President Mark Tooley commented:
"Nearly 70 percent of scouting units are sponsored by religious organizations, with Roman Catholic, Southern Baptist, Mormon and United Methodist churches among the largest sponsors. These groups are invested in the future of scouting, rather than simply making a political statement. Their voices merit being heard."

There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

A Church Near The Capitol And How It Grew

Yet, more Rome, Mary-Land info thanks to a link from Dov of End of Days.

History

St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church was organized May 10, 1820. Some of the original members included Rev. William Matthews, Daniel Carroll of Duddington, William Brent, James Hoban, Nicholas L. Queen, James Scallan, Ed. Mattingly, James Spratt, and James Barry. The church building, erected in 1821, after being enlarged from time to time, was torn down in 1889. The present granite and marble building was erected on the site of the old church, at the corner of Second and C Streets SE; it was dedicated November 23, 1890.

A Church Near The Capitol And How It Grew

On seeing St. Peter’s Church so close to the United States Capitol, one naturally wonders if the two were ever part of a common piece of property. A look at the records assures that they were, and turns up two intriguing bits of history to set the stage for the story of St. Peter’s.

In May, 1664, the colonial Maryland land grant office issued a patent for a 400 acre tract covering the Capitol Hill area. It went to a whimsical gentleman called Francis Pope. He called his tract “Rome” and a stream at the foot of the hill the “Tiber.” Thus he could say that “Pope was at home at Rome by the Tiber.” Later many local residents, George Washington among them, thought the name Tiber was too pretentious and called it Goose Creek. But the name Tiber stuck, and the stream exists by that name today, underground (where it cost taxpayers millions as engineers struggled to divert it from the foundations of the Rayburn House Office Building).

In 1670 the ground on the top of the hill was acquired by a pioneer Catholic settler of Maryland, Thomas Notley. In honor of the ancient Benedictine foundation in Dorsetshire, England, his ancestral home, Notley named the property Cerne Abbey Manor.

Thus St. Peter’s found itself on a site named once for the seat of Catholicism and again for a place trod by storied medieval monks; all this in addition, of course, to being in the very cockpit of national history.

From another standpoint, St. Peter’s can now be seen as a “mother of churches” in the city of Washington. Within what was once the parish boundaries are located St. Dominic’s St. Joseph’s, St. Teresa’s, Holy Comforter, Church of the Assumption, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Francis Xavier, and parts of St. Aloysius, St. Martin, and St. Francis de Sales.

Is it Pope Francis or Francis Pope?

As I was researching for corroborating evidence that this article did once exist ROME, MARY-LAND  U.S.A., I found an article on what could be a name anagram - Pope Francis/Francis Pope (an insight that I had recently gained)  at a peculiar site, with a similar title as EndrTimes:

Is it Pope Francis or Francis Pope?

It is a matter of now you see it and now you don't. Wikipedia is getting ready to delete its post on Rome, Maryland a.k.a. Washington DC. They can't take the "conspiracy theory" that Washington D.C. was at one time known as Washington D.C, I mean Rome, Maryland. Here is their post on Rome, Maryland: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome,_Maryland.   Here is another article about Tiber Creek on Wikipedia where Francis Pope, who named the creek, the Tiber, is conveniently not mentioned in the article. Ah, but he is in the footnotes in this article. I am sure that that footnote will be "discussed for deletion" on Wikipedia in the near future. All those editors at Wiki, are busy busy covering up The Truth. Looking at the Obama Administration, he likely has at least 12 full time White House employees busy doing just the same (editors on websites where People of Interest have a 212 3B terrorist designation). More on that below.

Pope Francis or Francis Pope?

I just got (undertood) the name game this afternoon!  How about that for synchronicity? Now I see it @ End of Days.

And by today 5/21/13, less than a month from when the above article warned that Wikipedia would delete the article about Rome, Maryland; Yes, it's gone!

ROME, MARY-LAND U.S.A.

Re-post of an article originally posted on EndrTimes (http://endrtimes.blogspot.com/2007/11/rome-usa.html) on 11/18/07.

(As of May 21, 2013 - This article has been inexplicably deleted, even though it was on the Web on Wikipedia back in 2007.)

Rome, Maryland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rome, Maryland, was the original name of a community within Prince George's County, Maryland, which would eventually become WashingtonDistrict of Columbia. Specifically, Rome was the original community name of Capitol Hill, upon which the United States Capitol Building sits.

In 1663, the property that would become the Capitol's site was inscribed in the Maryland property records as “Rome,” its owner a man named Francis Pope. The southern boundary of this property was shaped by a river named for the river that runs through Rome, Italy, the Tiber.

The community was part of the ten mile square tract of land which would become the American capital Washington, D.C., and its owner, Daniel Carroll, transferred the community to the federal government after the amendment to the United States Constitution sanctioning the building of the new United States capital city was ratified.

Daniel Carroll was the chairman of a three-man commission appointed by President George Washington to find a suitable location for the capital city. A signer of the Declaration of Independence, Daniel Carroll was a Roman Catholic educated by Jesuits in Maryland and France. His brother John Carroll became the first Catholic bishop in America, presiding over the See of Baltimore, which included Washington, D.C. John Carroll also founded Georgetown University.

Tiber Creek
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tiber/Goose Creek around 1800, and the modern shorelines of the Potomac River.

Andrew Ellicott's revision of L'Enfant's Plan, showing Washington City Canal

Tiber Creek or Tyber Creek was a tributary of the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.

Originally called 'Goose Creek', it was renamed by settler Francis Pope. Pope owned a 400-acre (1.6 km2) farmstead along the banks of the creek which, in a play on his surname, he named "Rome" after the Italian city, and he renamed the creak in honor of the river which flows through that city. It was southeast of then Georgetown, Maryland, amid lands that were selected for the City of Washington, the new capital of the United States.[1] It flowed south toward the base of Capitol Hill, then west meeting the Potomac near Jefferson Pier.

The Early History of the Capitol Site

....
The classical allusion encountered in this name was consistent with other names that other early settlers had assigned to their farms. Thompson's neighbor Francis Pope called his 400-acre farm " Rome" and the stream that flowed along its eastern edge the " Tiber." It was, he must have thought, a much better and more imaginative name than its earlier and more prosaic designation of " Goose Creek." Classical allusions signaled lofty goals and they would prove to be very appealing all across the nation well into the nineteenth century./ 2
