Happy Sabbath

11 And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.

12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.

13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.

Goldwater on Religious Right

Written by hortulanus94 on August 23, 2012

“There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God’s name on one’s behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with the loss of money or votes or both.

I’m frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in A, B, C, and D. Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate.

I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of conservatism.”

-Senator Barry Goldwater

Opus Dei: The Pentagon—Vatican Connection

Joseph Edward Schmitz, former Inspector General of the Department of Defense and a former executive with Blackwater Worldwide;  He is a member of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and a member of Opus Dei.

by Frank Morales, The Shadow

While visiting New York City last spring, Pope Benedict surely visited the offices of his "personal prelature"—the Opus Dei organization. Most certainly, he marveled at their spanking new 17-story national headquarters, an imposing red brick building on 34th and Lexington, which the highly secretive Catholic lay organization purchased for a cool $69 million back during all the hoopla over the Da Vinci Code, a timely public relations boon to their efforts. Opening for business during the fateful year of 2001, at the dawn of the new crusades against the oil-rich Islamic infidels of Eurasia, Opus Dei and its elite backers—most prominently Pope Benedict—have since continued to manifest a singular Holy Coincidence of agendas with Bush administration foreign policy...particularly the kind that does not always make the headlines.

Opus Dei, Decoded
Opus Dei is arguably the most powerful and virulent exponent of the fundamentalist religious fervor sweeping the globe; only this time it's Catholic fundamentalists we're talking about, hard-liners who trace their origins back to the Holy Inquisition and the bloody Crusades. These guys make Jerry Falwell and his Protestant come-latelies look like Little Leaguers. Now mind you, they have a somewhat different opinion of themselves. According to their website, "Opus Dei is a Catholic institution and adheres to Catholic doctrine, which clearly condemns immoral behavior, including murder, lying, stealing, and generally injuring people."

It was in 1928 Spain that Catholic priest José María Escriva de Balaguer founded the Opus Dei organization. As spiritual advisor to General Francisco Franco, Balaguer chose and trained the elite members of the dictatorship the general established after the Spanish Civil War in 1939, placing him and his Opus Dei at the center of authoritarian power.

Later, Balaguer was sent to the Vatican, and from there he worked to spread the influence of Opus Dei-especially to Latin America, where it sought to carry out its ongoing campaign to tame those Liberation Theology priests, condemned for appreciating Marxist analyses and opposing right-wing military dictatorships.

Balaguer, who was fast-tracked into sainthood in 2002, concocted a series of axioms for a radically right-wing, anti-women lay movement which has over the years aligned itself with some of the most brutal dictatorships in modern times, including that of Augusto Pinochet's Chile in the 1970s. Most recently, it supported the 2002 aborted coup in Venezuela. While exceedingly sophisticated in its political and business practice, Opus Dei is profoundly anti-modern in its ideology. Half of Franco's cabinet, back in the dark ages of World War II, were members of Opus Dei.

These were also formative years for Josef Ratzinger—the future Pope Benedict. Though he was never a member of the Nazi party, as a seminarian Ratzinger, was briefly enrolled in the Hitler Youth in the early 1940s. In 1943 he was conscripted into an anti-aircraft unit guarding a BMW plant outside Munich. Later, he was sent to Austria's border with Hungary to erect tank traps. After being shipped back to Bavaria, he apparently deserted. When the war ended, he was an American prisoner of war.

In 1982, the Opus Dei organization became a personal prelature of the Vatican—that is, a separate church entity beholden only to the Pope. From that moment on, Opus Dei members escaped the authority of the bishops in the territories in which they reside. Consequently, they function as a sort of instrument of Vatican social control—bringing to mind another Vatican body that ruled with
religious terror in the Spain of the 16th Century before imposing and exporting its fanaticism to the universal Church: the Inquisition.

Although Opus Dei is a part of the church's structure, it's not like traditional dioceses, which are defined geographically, but instead by its "worldwide purpose"— to dominate the church and selected governments while promoting extremist policies. With roughly 88,000 members worldwide, including about 2,000 priests, the organization spans some 61 countries, including roughly 3,000 members in the United States.

Estimated to hold assets of about $3 billion, the free-floating personal prelature, which purports to do "the work of God" ("Opus Dei" translated), is beholden to no one but the Pope, whose personal spokesman, Cardinal Joaquin Navarro-Valls, is also an Opus Dei member. Appointing its own priests and bishops to rule over the lay membership, it runs 15 universities, seven hospitals, 11 business schools and a great number of primary, secondary and technical schools, functioning as an underground force for political reaction within the Catholic church.

The organization's membership includes elite elements who wield influence at the highest levels of government, the Vatican, and the Vatican Bank. The individuals that Opus Dei chooses to recruit for membership are the cream of American, European and Latin American society. They include owners of big multinational companies, the press and finance institutions, as well as figures at the highest levels of the world's most powerful governments. US Supreme Court justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel A. Scalia have rumored links to Opus Dei, as do Sen. Sam Brownback and former Rep. Rick Santorum.

One current Opus Dei member worth noting is Joseph E Schmitz. A former Pentagon inspector general, he became chief of operations for Blackwater Worldwide, the private security firm, back in 2005. While at the Pentagon, he'd been tasked with the job of overseeing all war contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan. His connection to war profiteers became well known. At least $2 trillion went "missing" from the Pentagon during his watch. Shortly after Schmitz exonerated his friends in the war industry, he announced that he was going to work for Blackwater, where he is today.

In a 2004 speech Schmitz said, "No American today should ever doubt that we hold ourselves accountable to the rule of law under God. Here lies the fundamental difference between us and the terrorists." Aside from his membership in Opus Dei, Schmitz is also a member of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a Christian militia formed in the 11th century, before the first Crusades, with the mission of defending territories that the Crusaders had conquered from the Muslims. The Blackwater leadership apparently think they are following in that tradition.

To target our own nation's brightest students, Opus Dei runs off-campus housing and centers around Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.; Brown University in Providence, RI; Princeton University in New Jersey; and numerous other elite universities and business schools. Situated out front of these institutions, along with military recruiters, they troll for the young and impressionable.

As mentioned, Opus Dei has thus far signed up about 3,000 US members and are on the way to fulfilling their goal, which their founder articulated some years back when he stated, "What is the end? To promote in the world the greatest possible number of souls dedicated to God in Opus Dei." In her book, People of God, Penny Lernoux notes that Opus Dei "is an efficient machine run to achieve world power." Their reactionary politics and globalist pretensions just so happen, in a match surely not made in heaven, to coincide with the Bush agenda for world domination.

Vatican meets Pentagon Inc.

Evidence of the hand of Opus Dei within the machinations of US imperialism becomes manifest when one examines the manner by which the Catholic organization secures it financing. According to Charity Navigator, a philanthropic evaluation service, "The Woodlawn Foundation supports activities conducted by the Roman Catholic Prelature Opus Dei [whose] services extend to the broad general public." Located in New Rochelle, the Woodlawn Foundation is the primary conduit of financing for the Opus Dei organization. According to Guidestar research, Woodlawn provides "grants to over 40 Opus Dei-affiliated foundations," while maintaining assets of about $15 million. John B. Haley, an Opus Dei member, is the president and director of the foundation.

According to Hoover On-Line, a business database and information resource, the Woodlawn Foundation, as of June 2001, controlled some 10,000 shares, with estimated proceeds of $415,000, of the AES Corporation, or the Advanced Energy Systems Corporation. Who are they? Well, only the largest producer of energy in the world, with nearly $12 billion in revenue!

Again, according to Hoover: "The right place at the right time—is it kismet? No, it's AES, one of the world's leading independent power producers. The company has interests in 120 generation facilities in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean that give it a combined net generating capacity of more than 44 gigawatts of power (primarily fossil-fueled); it also has power plants under construction. AES sells electricity to utilities and other energy marketers through wholesale contracts or on the spot market. AES also sells power directly to customers worldwide through its interests in distribution utilities, mainly in Latin America."

A Nov. 17, 2002 Associated Press piece entitled "Evidence of Price Gouging During California Energy Crisis," reported that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which was looking into corruption in the California energy industry, focused on "discussions between employees of Williams and AES Corporation about prolonging an outage at a power plant to take advantage of higher prices the state was paying at the height of the crisis." Corp Watch, meanwhile, pointed out in August 2003 that "Virginia-based AES, the world's largest independent energy producer, is currently under investigation by the Ugandan Inspectorate of Government and the US Justice Department for alleged bribery, in violation of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act."

Dennis Bakke, a co-founder of AES in the mid-80s, is a devotee of Opus Dei and their way of doing business. In 2005, Bakke, CEO of AES, preached a sermon in Falls Church, Va., during which he intoned that, "labor and opus are two Latin words for work. Labor...conjures up work as hard, something I have to do but would rather not... Our Catholic friends use the word opus in their Opus Dei, or "God's work," that celebrates our calling to secular work in a profoundly Biblical way. On Monday when we go back to God's work, Opus Dei, secular work to which we are called, let us do it with passion, with joy, and with love, befitting God's call on our life. It is our primary mission, done for the glory of God. Do it and enter into the Master's joy."

The former master chairman of AES, recently deceased, was Richard G. Darman, former director of the US Office of Management and Budget; former deputy secretary of the US Treasury; former Assistant US Secretary of Commerce; and member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission. A director of AES from July 2002; he was elected chairman of the board on May 1, 2003. Strikingly, in addition to his service as chairman of AES, he was a partner and managing director of the Carlyle Group, joining the company in February 1993, after serving in the cabinet of the first Bush administration.

The Carlyle Group is, according to the Washington Post, "the largest private equity manager in the world," which "buys and sells whole companies the way some firms trade shares of stock." It specializes in defense contractors. Other Carlyle Group members include Secretary of State James Baker, former UK Prime Minister John Major, and former president and CIA chief George Bush Sr. In short, Carlyle is the high-flying financier of the military-industrial complex—a complex blessed, apparently, by the likes of Opus Dei.

Holy Counterinsurgency
Over the years, Pope Benedict has served Balaguer's vision and the Opus Dei brand of fascist social policy with zeal. According to Thierry Meyssan's article, "Opus Dei Sets Out to Conquer the World," as president of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith—formerly the Office of the Holy Inquisition—the former Josef Ratzinger oversaw, during the Reagan era, the setting up of a "surveillance center in Bogotá, Colombia, with a powerful computer of strategic capacity that was connected to the Vatican." Its purpose: to record all data and political activities of designated leftist Latin American priests and religious people dedicated to the vision and practice of Liberation Theology, a movement that sees justice for the poor as synonymous with God's will.

As a consequence of the intelligence data that was gathered, and its dissemination to US trained so-called counterinsurgency experts, the death squads were able to identify and assassinate many people—as was the case in El Salvador, with the murder of scores of religious workers, including the outspoken "voice of the poor," Archbishop Oscar Romero. According to a 2000 article by Marianne Johnson entitled, "The Hand of Opus Dei in El Salvador," "under Archbishop Sáenz Lacalle, an Opus Dei man," who in 1997 accepted the title of brigadier general from the US-backed Salvadoran military, "the strategy has not been to reform liberation theology, but to undo and remove all traces of it." The ground for this strategy had been prepared by Cardinal Ratzinger, who in 1996
made the nakedly fraudulent claim, during a Mexico City press conference, that liberation theology is an "ideological stream which is the source of many violent actions on the Continent."

The Coup in Venezuela
Interestingly, the Popes' April 2008 visit to New York just about coincided with the sixth anniversary of the abortive US-backed Venezuelan coup attempt, which was in no small measure aided and abetted by Opus Dei. According to the Los Angeles Times of April 22, 2002, following the April 11 coup attempt, newly appointed president Pedro Carmona "had named a government that included several members of the ultraconservative Roman Catholic group Opus Dei." The Guardian reported that same day that after "the military appeared in full uniform on national television to announce that [legitimate President Hugo] Chávez had resigned, Carmona was installed and almost immediately issued a decree dissolving the national assembly and the supreme court, and announced a far-right government including, as foreign minister, José Rodríguez Iturbe, a member of the right-wing Catholic organization Opus Dei."

And though the coup was relatively bloodless, the London Observer (April 21, 2002) reported that "more than 100 people died in events before and after the coup." It's probable that it was worse than that. According to eye-witness reports, the newly installed Opus Dei cabinet under Carmona went about some frenzied house-cleaning. Luis Duno Gottberg, reporting from Venezuela, told Left Turn magazine that immediately following the coup, "a cabinet composed of high bourgeois elements and members of Opus Dei, a conspiratorial right wing Catholic organization, suspended the National Assembly and began the removal of various democratically elected state governors."

According to Gottberg, "brutal repression was not long in coming. There were house-to-house searches, lynchings and executions of community leaders and Chávez partisans that took place with the utmost impunity. The television stations and the national press supported the new de facto government and silenced dissident voices." Well, as we know, what came to pass was that a few days later—by April 13—Chávez was back in the driver's seat, heading a victorious counter-coup, sparked by an uprising of the poor and workers of Venezuela.

Since that time, further information has surfaced pointing to the fact that elements of the Bush regime were also involved in the attempted removal of Hugo Chávez from power in Venezuela. The Observer pointed this out in a bold headline, "Venezuela Coup Linked to Bush Team," making reference to certain American "specialists in the 'dirty wars‚ of the eighties," who "encouraged the plotters who tried to topple President Chávez." These officials were named: Otto Reich, John Negroponte (our former intelligence czar, currently envoy to Iraq), and Elliot Abrams—all veterans of the Reagan administration's illegal and bloody wars throughout Central America.

According to an Associated Press (Dec. 3, 2004) report entitled "Documents Show CIA Knew of Venezuelan Coup," the CIA was on board nearly a week before the doomed putsch. According to the AP story, "an April 6 senior intelligence executive brief—just five days before a coup that briefly ousted Chávez—said 'disgruntled senior officers and a group of radical junior officers are stepping up efforts to organize a coup against President Chávez, possibly as early as this month." This "executive brief," along with others, are available atwww.venezuelafoia.info, albeit in a somewhat censored form.

In addition, as reported in the UK Guardian (April 29, 2002), the "American Navy Helped Venezuelan Coup," Venezuelan congressman Roger Rondón "claimed that the [US] military officers, whom he named as [James] Rogers and [Ronald] MacCammon, had been at the Fuerte Tiuna military headquarters with the coup leaders during the night of April 11-12. The congressman went on, accusing the US ambassador to Venezuela, Charles Shapiro, and two US embassy military attachés of involvement in the coup. Rondón said, "we saw [Shapiro] leaving Miraflores palace [the presidential residence], all smiles and embraces, with the dictator Pedro Carmona Estanga... [His] satisfaction was obvious. Shapiro's participation in the coup d'état in Venezuela is evident."

The Bushes and the Pope
Finally, according to the Israeli journalist Zvi Ba'rel, writing in Haaretz (July 7, 2004), the "British American Security Information Council (BASIC), a Washington, DC think tank, revealed that a Carlyle consultant, Richard Burt, former US Ambassador to Germany, also heads another company, Diligence, a firm that provides private security services in Iraq." Set up in 2003, "Diligence was founded by William Webster, a former director of the CIA and the FBI. Former senior CIA officials are now at its helm, among them Whitley Bruner, formerly head of the agency's Baghdad station, now director of the Iraq branch of Diligence. The deputy chairman of Diligence, Joe Allbaugh, was the current President Bush's campaign manager in 2000. Diligence is a member of the Private Security Company Association of Iraq.

According to Ba'rel, in 2004, "Diligence signed a contract with New Bridge Strategies, a firm headed by Allbaugh, to supply business information about postwar Iraq." New Bridge Strategies provides "security services and intelligence information to private companies seeking to do business in Iraq. According to one US diplomat recently back from Iraq, these companies are a kind of private army. They have their own security personnel and their own intelligence corps. They even make agreements with heads of local tribes to supply defense and information, a major source of their income, according to the diplomat."

New Bridge has a presence in Baghdad, Beirut, Geneva, Houston, Kuwait, and Washington, DC. According to their former website, www.newbridgestrategies.com, "the opportunities evolving in Iraq today are of such an unprecedented nature and scope that no other existing firm has the necessary skills and experience to be effective both in Washington, DC, and on the ground in Iraq." And the opportunities involve more than contracting for "private security," which we already know is big business. According to Douglas Jehl, writing in the New York Times (Sept. 30, 2003), in an article entitled, "Washington Insiders' New Firm Consults on Contracts in Iraq," "a group of businessmen linked by their close ties to President Bush, his family and his administration have set up a consulting firm to advise companies that want to do business in Iraq, including those seeking pieces of taxpayer-financed reconstruction projects." With praise from the likes of former Iraqi golden boy Ahmed Chalabi—who stated that, "New Bridge Strategies has done a stellar job of recommending to me the best contractors for the jobs to be done"—they can't go wrong, especially when they have the Bushes around. And they do.

According to the Financial Times of Dec. 11, 2003, in a piece entitled, "Middle East: Bush's Brother Helped New Bridge Strategies Businessmen," "two businessmen instrumental in setting up New Bridge Strategies, a well-connected Washington firm designed to help clients win contracts in Iraq, have previously used an association with the younger brother of President George W. Bush to seek business in the Middle East... John Howland, the company president, and Jamal Daniel, a principal, have maintained an important business relationship with Neil Bush stretching back several years."

Ah yes, the young Neilster, an embarrassment to not one, but two presidents. According to the Washington Post (Dec. 28, 2003), in a piece entitled "The Relatively Charmed Life Of Neil Bush," "in the late '80s and early '90s, Bush embarrassed his father, George HW Bush, with his shady dealings as a board member of the infamous Silverado Savings and Loan, whose collapse cost taxpayers $1 billion... Now, Bush has embarrassed his brother George W. Bush with a made-for-the-tabloids divorce that featured paternity rumors, a defamation suit and, believe it or not, allegations of voodoo." Apparently, "during Bush's very nasty divorce battle" when asked by his wife's attorney whether he'd had any extramarital affairs, Bush told the story of his Asian hotel room escapades. "Mr. Bush," said the attorney, Marshall Davis Brown, "you have to admit that it's a pretty remarkable thing for a man just to go to a hotel room door and open it and have a woman standing there and have sex with her." "It was very unusual," Bush replied. Actually, it wasn't that unusual. It happened at least three or four times during Bush's business trips to Asia. "I don't remember the exact number," Neil admitted.

Neil's womanizing, divorcing and dabbling in voodoo, though, wasn't sufficient to alienate one very important business co-partner—namely the future Pope Benedict XVI, Josef Ratzinger. According to New York Newsday (April 21, 2005), "Neil Bush, the president's controversial younger brother, six years ago joined the cardinal who this week became Pope Benedict XVI as a founding board member of a little known Swiss ecumenical foundation. The charter members of the board were all well-known international religious figures, except for Bush and his close friend and business partner, Jamal Daniel, whose family has extensive holdings in the United States and Switzerland, public records show. The Foundation for Interreligious and Intercultural Research and Dialogue was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1999 to promote ecumenical understanding and publish original religious texts, said a foundation official."

In conclusion, the cozy relationship between the Woodlawn Foundation, financiers of Opus Dei, and the AES Corp/Carlyle Group signal a tangible connection between the machinations of the Vatican and the Pentagon, and US intelligence intrigues such as the coup attempt in Venezuela. This marriage, surely made in hell, is not surprising when we consider the ideological requirements of a so-called "war on terror" which trumpets an Islamic "axis of evil"—a throwback to the days of the bloody Crusades. Exposing these connections helps to undermine the deeply reactionary basis for the war-making.

Countdown to the Sunday Law

The monster Tornado of Sunday, May 19, 2013 which touched down over Moore, Oklahoma, with 200 mile/hr winds, one mile wide, devasted a large section of the town - homes and schools - as of Tuesday morning, May 21, 51 were known dead, including 20 children, but they are still counting, (May 22, now they say, 15 adults and 9 children died, 24 in all. Such events will be instrumental for calls for prayer, then calls for coming to church and pray, then calls for coming to church each Sunday, then calls for making it a law to come to church each Sunday . . . thus we have a Sunday Law. - What does the Lord want people to do? God loves all people, but He has announced His conditions under which we can be saved and be part of His kongdom. Jesus said only thieves will try to enter in some other way, John 10:7-11.

The Christian Coalition - 1995
"The idea that there can be some kind of alliance between the Christian Coalition and the RCC is nonsense." - Reed said Catholics and evangelical Christians could find common ground in opposing abortion, opposing pornography, supporting school choice and beliefs."

Justice Sunday Message:
`People hold the power.' Sutoon, first vice president of the Nashville based Southern Baptist Convention, the nations largest Protestant body, closed with five sentences:
  1. It's a new day.
  2. Liberalism is dead.
  3. The majority of Americans are conservative.
  4. You can count on me for showing up and speaking out.
  5. And - let the church rise

[Jeannine F. Hunter, 259-8287, August 15, 1995.]

These occurrences we have been presenting for a long time.

"The history which the great I AM has marked out in His word, uniting link after link in the prophetic chain, from eternity in the past to eternity in the future, tells us where we are today in the procession of the ages, and what may be expected in the time to come. All that prophecy has foretold as coming to pass, until the present time, has been traced on the pages of history, and we may be assured that all which is yet to come will be fulfilled in its order." {Ed 178.3}

"Protestantism shall give the hand of fellowship to the Roman power. Then there will be a law against the Sabbath of God's creation, and then it is that God will do His "strange work" in the earth." [7BC 910 (1886); LDE 130.1]

"When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by them in common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy, and the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result." {GC 445.1}

"The dignitaries of church and state will unite to bribe, persuade, or compel all classes to honor the Sunday. The lack of divine authority will be supplied by oppressive enactments. Political corruption is destroying love of justice and regard for truth; and even in free America, rulers and legislators, in order to secure public favor, will yield to the popular demand for a law enforcing Sunday observance. Liberty of conscience, which has cost so great a sacrifice, will no longer be respected. In the soon-coming conflict we shall see exemplified the prophet's words: "The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." Revelation 12:17. {GC 592.3}

Michael Hastings: FBI Records Lead to Positive ID

Crash

By Dennis Romero Thu., Jun. 20 2013 at 12:57 PM

KTLA / YouTube

(Here's the video shown above)

The L.A. County Department of Coroner today confirmed that the burned body found in the charred Mercedes that crashed in Hollywood early Tuesday was indeed that of noted journalist Michael Hastings.

The remains of 33-year-old Michael Mahon Hastings were identified through fingerprint records "obtained from the FBI," coroner's Lt. Fred Corral told us:

The cause of death?

That determination could take as long as 10 weeks, he said. Coroner's investigators have ordered toxicology tests to figure out if Hastings had been drinking or was under the influence of drugs.

Hasting was involved in a horrific, solo-vehicle crash that was reported about 4:25 a.m. Tuesday just south of Melrose Avenue on Highland Avenue.

Michael Hastings, the FBI, and WikiLeaks: Death of Journalist Sparks Conspiracy Theories

By Joe Coscarelli

The death of reporter Michael Hastings, best remembered for taking on General Stanley McChrystal and other powerful people, has been met with shock and grief in the journalistic community, especially from those fortunate enough to work alongside him. But one layer below the fond remembrances are a host of vague questions and inferences about the circumstances surrounding the 33-year-old BuzzFeed reporter's fiery solo car crash early Tuesday in Los Angeles. Bringing those suspicions to the forefront last night was WikiLeaks, never reticent to insert itself into a story, which teased, "Michael Hastings death has a very serious non-public complication. We will have more details later." And after three hours tweeted: "Michael Hastings contacted WikiLeaks lawyer Jennifer Robinson just a few hours before he died, saying that the FBI was investigating him."

"Yeah," BuzzFeed editor Ben Smith confirmed to Daily Intelligencer. "Before his death, Michael told a number of his friends and colleagues that he was concerned that he was under investigation."

But other, less reputable sources have taken the speculation much further. "Vince Foster-like murder plot emerging in Los Angeles? Did the Obama administration knock off a star reporter?" asked one blog early on Wednesday, adding to existing conspiratorial Twitter chatter. Another wrote, "Admit it, Michael Hastings’ Death is Weird and Scary." Hours before revelations about a potential FBI investigation, InfoWars, the Alex Jones website that serves as a catch-all conspiracy-theory clearing house, mentioned Hastings's death with an editor's note: "Journalists who mess with government and military power often die under mysterious circumstances." None had more than conjecture.

The circumstances are these: "Police said a vehicle was southbound on Highland about 4:20 a.m. when it lost control south of Melrose and smashed into a tree," the L.A. Times reported. Video purports to show Hastings's Mercedes-Benz running a red light at a high speed minutes before the crash. "It sounded like a bomb went off in the middle of the night," a witness told the local news. "I couldn't have written a scene like this for a movie, where the engine flies from the car." Photos and video from the aftermath show extreme wreckage, and as of yesterday, the coroner had not officially identified the body because it was too badly burned.

But an automotive writer also fed the doubters:

I’m here to state that I’ve seen dozens of cars hit walls and stuff at high speeds and the number of them that I have observed to eject their powertrains and immediately catch massive fire is, um, ah, zero. Modern cars are very good at not catching fire in accidents. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which is an evolutionary design from a company known for sweating the safety details over and above the Euro NCAP requirements, should be leading the pack in the not-catching-on-fire category. Nor is the C-Class known for sudden veering out of control into trees and whatnot.

The crash is under investigation and there will be an official accident report (a toxicology report could take weeks). Whatever its findings, they can likely coexist with Hastings's mind-set at the time and a potential government investigation without representing something more sinister.

"He was incredibly tense and very worried and was concerned that the government was looking in on his material," said Hastings's friend and Current TV host Cenk Uygur. "I don't know what his state of mind was at 4:30 in the morning, but I do know what his state of mind was in general, and it was a nervous wreck." But Mother Jones editor Clara Jeffery put it plainly: "Ugh, the people posting Vince Foster style comments  do a disservice to his no BS truth telling." Let's wait for the facts.

Update: The L.A. Times reports that Hastings, prior to his death, "was researching a story about a privacy lawsuit brought by the Florida socialite Jill Kelley against the Department of Defense and the FBI." The paper also notes, "Since Hastings's death early Tuesday, wild conspiracy theories have bloomed on the Internet implying that he was murdered by powerful forces wanting to silence him."

Update II: The LAPD tells the Times "there appears to be no foul play in the one-vehicle accident that killed journalist Michael Hastings ... Officials are trying to determine whether there was a mechanical problem with the car." His body has been positively identified by the L.A. coroner.

Ceremony marks 50th anniversary of Kennedy's historic visit to Ireland

By Christiana Elgin
Catholic News Service

ARLINGTON, Va. (CNS) -- In 1963, Dunganstown in County Wexford, Ireland, welcomed one of its own back to his ancestral birthplace.

June 27 marks 50 years since President John F. Kennedy's historic visit to Ireland. Kennedy was the first Catholic to become U.S. president.

On June 18, a commemorative ceremony honoring the president's Irish heritage was held at Arlington National Cemetery. Fire from Kennedy's graveside eternal flame was used to light a torch that was being transported to the quayside Kennedy Monument in the town of New Ross in Wexford. In a June 22 ceremony, it was also to be used to light a flame in memory of all Irish emigrants.

Kevin Conmy of the Embassy of Ireland presided over the ceremony. He said the flame will be transported using Olympic technology and be delivered by an escort detail from the Irish Naval Service.

"In Ireland, we like our commemorations," Conmy said in an interview with Catholic News Service. "Commemorations are very important in terms of passing on our culture and our experiences and the visit from President Kennedy in 1963 was a historic event and so that's why we're celebrating it."

Charge d'affaires Conmy said it is important for such a historic visit to transcend generations. "The election of President Kennedy, that third generation Irish elected to the highest office in the world, was a real inspiration to Irish people everywhere, but particularly in Ireland."

Colors of both Ireland and the U.S. were presented by respective members of the military, including a bagpipe performance by Irish Defense Forces Cpl. Anthony Kelly of a hymn that was also performed at the late president's state funeral.

Members of the Kennedy and Shriver families were recognized at the ceremony. Representatives of the Peace Corps and the Special Olympics also were present, including about 10 Special Olympics athletes greeted by the movement's CEO, Timothy Shriver. His late mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founded the Special Olympics in 1968.

Emmy-nominated singer and Wexford man Michael Londra performed a rendition of Ireland's national anthem "Amhran na bhFiann" ("The Soldiers' Song") in Gaelic. Londra, according to his website, has played the role of the late Bobby Kennedy in a performance of "JFK: A Musical Drama," at the invitation of U.S. director and choreographer Larry Fuller.

Award-winning Irish tenor Anthony Kearns performed "The Star Spangled Banner." Kearns opened the 2013 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington and among the many other events where he has performed was a bipartisan Friends of Ireland lunch in March, invited by House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio.

Kearns told CNS following the Arlington ceremony that he tries to stay outside the political fray.

"Music transcends all boundaries, I'm in the middle of it all," said Kearns, who also hails from County Wexford. "It's a great opportunity to be here and I lend my voice to various occasions."

Freshman U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy III, D-Mass., spoke at the Arlington memorial, applauding Ireland's unwavering spirit. He is the grandson of Bobby Kennedy, who was a U.S. senator and served as attorney general in his brother's administration.

In a reflection related to his great uncle's words to a joint session of the Irish Parliament during his presidential visit, Congressman Kennedy said he thought of the president's journey as the story of a young man returning home.

"Fifty years ago, speaking in Cork, President Kennedy said most countries send out oil or iron, steel or gold or some other crop, but Ireland has only one export, and that is its people," Congressman Kennedy said. "While this country imports raw material and finished goods to feed our economy, we welcome the stranger to strengthen our spirit. For almost a full generation, they were mostly Irish.

"Now they come from every corner of the world. We light this torch today as a symbol of the bond that was forged when a young American president found his way home."

A 1963 story on President Kennedy's visit by the National Catholic Welfare Conference News Service, the predecessor to CNS, reported that he said no larger nation ever did more than Ireland to keep Christianity and Western culture alive in the darkest centuries.

Minister Paul Kehoe, the Irish government's chief whip, laid a wreath of assorted flowers in the colors of the Irish flag on the Kennedy family grave.

A Catholic priest closed the ceremony with a prayer.

"All throughout Scripture, the flame represents presence of the spirit of God," said Father Timothy Hubbs, a lieutenant colonel and senior Army chaplain at Arlington National Cemetery.

"From the fire of the burning bush, God commissioned Moses to leave his home and seek the freedom of his people. By a pillar of a flame, the angel of the Lord led the Israelites through the desert to the promise land. By tongues of fire, the Holy Spirit indwelled the apostles and empowered them to go into the world and proclaim the Gospel to all creation."

The same Spirit "enlivens our hearts" and "leads us out of darkness and into the light of Christ," he continued. "Therefore, as we call down God's blessing, on this torch and these lamps and all that the flame represents, our foremost concern must be that our Christian lives bare out the kind of witness we are called to live as the people of Christ in this generation."

Father Hubbs prayed that the "love and affection of the angels and saints" would be with those taking the torch lit with the flame from the Kennedy grave in Arlington "to kindle a memorial in the Irish homeland."

"May God shield you on every step, may he aid you in every path," he prayed, "and may he keep you safe on every slope, on ever hill, and on every plane, in the air or on sea, until you are home again. Amen."

For Jesuit, Syrian war is professional challenge, personal heartache

June 17th, 2013 | Author: bsindelar

For Jesuit Father Nawras Sammour, the ongoing conflict in Syria is a professional challenge and a personal heartache.

Father Sammour is Jesuit Refugee Service's regional director for the Middle East and lives in Damascus, Syria. He was born in Aleppo, and his mother, brother and sister still live there, but his nieces and nephews "have all left."

Tens of thousands of Syrians have died and millions have been displaced in more than two years of fighting between President Bashar Assad's government and rebels seeking his resignation.

"Sometimes I can't believe we Syrians have reached that level of violence," Father Sammour said. "I'm shocked. Shocked.

"We need to step back and realize that we went too far," he told Catholic News Service May 31 during an interview at JRS headquarters near the Vatican.

In a situation that is so tense and so divided, particularly among different Muslim groups, Father Sammour said Syria's small Christian communities may be frightened. But with Christian aid programs and partnerships with others providing assistance, they also enjoy a certain respect as non-partisans looking only to help others.

With the help of funding from a variety of agencies -- including the worldwide Caritas network and the U.S. bishops' Catholic Relief Services -- JRS has about 250 paid employees in Syria and another 300 volunteers.

They visit displaced families living in shelters, abandoned buildings, mosques, churches and monasteries and provide food and basic necessities. JRS runs field kitchens that serve 20,000 meals a day. They provide medicine to the chronically ill, operate a clinic in Aleppo and provide psycho-social support to almost 5,000 children, offering them a safe environment where they can play and try to keep up with their school work.

Father Sammour said the situation in Syria "is not calming down at all. The tension is worse. People are nervous. Syria is much more fragmented, and fear is much more established in the hearts of people," he said.

The work with the children, though, may be the seedbed of a better future. The children come from Christian as well as Sunni Muslim and Alawite Muslim families, and the JRS team is earning the trust of their parents.
"That will help with long-term reconciliation," Father Sammour said.

The Jesuit said he and other staff members have become "more prudent" when moving around the country because of the increased risk of kidnapping. Two Orthodox bishops were kidnapped in late April and have not been heard from since.

"Kidnapping is a danger for everybody," Father Sammour said. "It took on another dimension when the bishops were kidnapped, but two priests were taken in February, and hundreds of Christians and Muslims have been kidnapped."

The bishops reportedly were taken while trying to negotiate the release of Armenian Catholic Father Michel Kayyal and Greek Orthodox Father Maher Mahfouz, who were kidnapped in February.

"It's a problem not because it's bishops, but because it's a problem," Father Sammour said. "For sure, I was shocked when the Christian bishops were taken, but it was going on before that" both by "professional kidnappers" looking to make money with ransoms and by those kidnapping for political reasons.

Apparently the bishops' kidnappers have made no demands, so it is hard to know who took them or why, Father Sammour said. [Catholic News Service]

Brazilians protest in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo
6:38pm EDT

By Paulo Prada

RIO DE JANEIRO | Thu Jun 20, 2013 7:30pm EDT

(Reuters) - Brazil's biggest protests in two decades intensified on Thursday despite government concessions meant to quell the demonstrations, as 300,000 people took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro and hundreds of thousands more flooded other cities.

Undeterred by the reversal of transport fare hikes that sparked the protests, and promises of better public services, marchers demonstrated around two international soccer matches and in locales as diverse as the Amazon capital of Manaus and the prosperous southern city of Florianopolis.

"Twenty cents was just the start," read signs held by many converging along the Avenida Paulista, the broad avenue in central Sao Paulo, referring to the bus fare reductions.

In the capital, Brasilia, tens of thousands of protesters by early evening marched around the landmark modernist buildings that house Congress, the Supreme Court and presidential offices.

The swelling tide of protests prompted President Dilma Rousseff to cancel a trip next week to Japan, her office said.

The targets of the protests, now in their second week, have broadened to include high taxes, inflation, corruption and poor public services ranging from hospitals and schools to roads and police forces.

With an international soccer tournament as a backdrop, demonstrators are also denouncing the more than $26 billion of public money that will be spent on the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, two events meant to showcase a modern, developed Brazil.

After the concession on transport fares on Wednesday, activist groups differed over what their next priority should be. But the competing demands of demonstrators appeared to add to the intensity of Thursday's protests.

Inside the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro, soccer fans sang protest songs and showed support for the throngs of demonstrators gathering in the city. In Salvador, a northeastern city hosting another game of the soccer tournament that serves as a World Cup test run, protesters clashed with police, who fired teargas to disperse crowds.

The unrest comes six months before an election year and at a time when Brazil, after nearly a decade-long economic boom in which the country's profile soared on the global stage, enters a period of uncertainty. Economic growth of less than 1 percent last year, annual inflation of 6.5 percent and a loss of appetite for Brazilian assets among international investors have clouded what had been a feel-good era for Brazil.

Brazil's currency, the real, dropped to a four-year low on Thursday, trading as weak as 2.275 per U.S. dollar. The country's benchmark stock market index, the Bovespa, also hit a four-year low.

CHANGING POLITICAL LANDSCAPE

The protests have shaken the once solid ground under Rousseff and her ruling Workers' Party, a bloc that itself grew out of convulsive demonstrations by Brazil's labor movement 30 years ago. Until inflation and other economic woes began eroding her poll numbers in recent weeks, Rousseff enjoyed some of the highest approval ratings of any elected leader worldwide.

The demonstrations have been largely non-violent and comprised mostly middle-class, well-educated voters who do not form the bulk of Rousseff's electoral base.

But she and her party have sought to get ahead of the complaints and embrace them as their own - a shift that contrasts sharply with a playbook that long relied on telling Brazilians that they had never had it so good.

With little more than a year to go before presidential and gubernatorial elections, the unrest is forcing incumbents and traditional political parties to reconsider their strategies.

The decision to cut transportation fares illustrates what many analysts consider a reactive and contradictory response by a ruling class caught off guard.

"Were they wrong before or are they wrong now?" asked Carlos Melo, a political scientist at Insper, a business school in Sao Paulo, noting what had been a steadfast refusal to reverse a fare hike.

No criminal proceedings against Walter Veith

Update: bing translation of a German article:

13th June 2013 by DP

Walter Veith - Amazing Discoveries

The former zoology Professor Walter Veith is not investigated for suspicion of sedition. This was announced by the Prosecutor's Office Nuremberg-Fürth on request.

[Nuremberg/Dresden] Veith had expressed anti-Semitic positions in October 2012 in a speech in Nuremberg. All living Jews were declared to (be) Khazars, members of an earlier Asian people in truth. Veith described the Holocaust as a move with the Freemasons wanted to gather the Jews from all over Europe for the establishment of the Israeli State.

The Church of the Seventh day Adventists, whose Community Center the lecture took place and belongs to the Veith, promptly condemned statements made. You would be a "Criminal trivializing of the Nazi reign of terror very close" so the church leadership. Also on the website of EANN, readers that pointed that the statements could be possibly punishable. Jewish voices expressed sharp criticism of the lecture.

The public prosecutor's Office investigated whether the initial suspicion of a crime would be seen. She have "that being said, an investigation to launch, since the review of the lecture has revealed that the remarks of Mr Veith realize no offence" but ultimately, as the spokesperson of the Prosecutor's Office Nuremberg-Fürth, Prosecutor Antje Gabriel Gorsolke. Had not been a formal complaint against Veith.

Under the German Penal Code, the criminal liability of anti-Semitic statements on certain conditions is linked. Such statements, involving crimes of national socialism are approved, denied or played down and at the same time to with them to endanger the public peace are punishable (section 130 subsection 3 of the Criminal Code). For this, the public prosecutor's Office apparently saw no sufficient clues that would require an investigation.

AD Editor: Pauschalisierte (Lumped everything togethertoo much Veith

The private association "Amazing Discoveries" serves as the event agency and media distribution of lectures of Vahadane. In an interview with YouTube, the editor of "Amazing Discoveries" for the range of media admitted that Veith to sweeping have expressed in the presentation about the origins of the Jews.
The editor, however, wrote the presumption that Veith could committed an offence, to exaggerated sensitivity of Germans. "Germany is really little in this respect. Made it even to the law, that it is not allowed is to deny the Holocaust or events of the NAZI era in any way, only to put into perspective or to trivialize", so the employees of"Amazing Discoveries". When a breach of prison would threaten up to five years. Amazed laughing, his American interviewees argued that this is contrary to freedom of expression and freedom of speech. "In this respect, it is limited. Unfortunately' ruled the editor about banning Holocaust denial.

Supporters of Veith feared religious persecution

That the public prosecutor's Office verified the statements, Walter Veith had publicized a month after the lecture. "A case of Volksverhetzung (incitement against the Government) because apparently anti-Semitic statements in my talk to Daniel 11 was opened against me," Veith wrote. Ellen White, co-founder of Seventh-day Adventists, 1915 deceased have predicted but that such would happen. Veith pointed to quotes from white, whereby Satan will cause a confusion and persecution of believers. "So I am good things, because there the spirit of prophecy [meant is Ellen White - Note d. red.] as correctly proves"concluded Veith.

The news triggered uncertainty worldwide Veith supporters. In social networks, it was feared that this could be the prelude to an expected end time persecution of believers. Veith was seen due to the alleged persecution in a series with Paul, Luther, and Hus. Encouragement by the extreme right-wing opinion leaders Christian Vivian Bacon received Veith. "Brother Veith", so Bart Hel, subject themselves to the faith will not of political correctness and instead against apostasy. Bart Hel wrote that the own Church had prohibited Veith to speak publicly in Germany reveal the Gleichschaltung (forcing into line?of the churches by enigmatic powers, in a press release, which was taken over by several right-extremist-oriented Web sites. Reports also circulated that Veith in Germany had already been imprisoned because he had criticized the Catholic Church.

The Press Office of the Nuremberg public prosecutor's Office, however, expressly emphasized that during the referred Veith, nor any other person were considered suspect.

Original article in German:

Kein Strafverfahren gegen Walter Veith

13. Juni 2013 von DP

Walter Veith – Amazing Discoveries

How do Churches become Babylon?

However, the `little horn' grown strong and powerful does it not alone, it has daughter churches which grew out of it. So we ask, which churches grew out of the papal system? Well, history shows that certain Protestant churches grew out of it. They had some differences with the system in Rome, but also some similarities and so they tended to talk to each other to see if their common ground would lead them back together; for a long time it did not, but right in our days it did. The Protestant denominations heads agreed with the head in Rome to work together to save their tottering and failing church memberships, to not lose their jobs and get paid. The most telling common ground is that they both believe Sunday is now the holy day to keep and that the souls of men go to heaven at death. War, oppression, conformity to the world, religious formalism, the worship of mammon, the pursuit of pleasure, and the maintenance of very many errors of the mother church, identify with sad and faithful accuracy the great body of Protestant churches as aligned in agreement with the great Babylonian system. Both in their history engaged in persecuting those who they labeled to be heretics. All religions which do that exhibit the spirit of the dark power which dwells in their heart, for the Bible does not allow man to do violence to their fellow man who happens to disagree with them (Luke 3:14; Ex. 20:13), for God's true church on earth is a chaste, pure virgin, 2.Corinthians 11:2. The church which is joined in friendship with the world, is called in the Bible a harlot. It is this unlawful connection with the kings of the earth that constitutes her to be the great harlot of the Book of Revelation (the Apocalypse), Rev. chapter 17. That is why the Jewish Church, at first was married to the Lord God (Jeremiah 2:3; 31:32), and became then a harlot (Ezekiel 16). When this Jewish Church apostatized (fell away) from God, it was called Sodom (Isaiah 1), just as "the great city" (Babylon) is so called in Revelation chapter 11. This unlawful union with the world of which Babylon is guilty, is positive proof that it is not the civil power that persecutes others on account of religious views, but governments persecute only when led to it on account of religion. That people who claim to be Christians belong to such world/church mixed bodies, shows that she is professedly a religious body, but their heart is not at one with the Lord God. Churches are to lead people to Christ only, not to play politics. For these reasons, it is very evident that the Babylon of our apocalyptic days is theprofessed church united with the world, and that Babylon is fallen.

Can the Church borrow the marketing tools of the world and apply them to the Church? What is the history of the Church Growth movement and its false premises? Who is involved in the new evangelicalism and second reformation? Why are these movements embracing contemplative mysticism? How does this movement play into the New World Order? These questions and more are answered in Church of Tares: Purpose Driven, Seeker-Sensitive, Church Growth & New World Order.

Church of Tares chronicles the man-centered pragmatism of these evangelical Christian movements in comparison to the Bible's instruction for building the Church of Jesus Christ. As a sequel to The Real Roots of the Emergent Church, Church of Tares documents the connections between the liberal Emergent Church movement and the Church Growth movement. Both movements' leadership were discipled by business management guru Peter Drucker, who was attracted to the megachurch movement as a social phenomenon that could bring about his "new society" and New World Order. Megacurch pastors Rick Warren and Bill Hybels as well as Leadership Network founder Bob Buford all acknowledge Drucker (who professed not to be a Christian) as their mentor and have built their organizations upon his secular business management philosophies rather than the foundation of Jesus Christ.

The fruit of these movements is great compromise of the Gospel and the Great Commission. Rick Warren claims to be ushering in a new spiritual awakening and second reformation with his P.E.A.C.E. Plan. But this reform appears to be a social reformation rather than a spiritual one by joining together in ministry with unbelievers to fight global giants. Such compromise has led to the affirming response letter to the Common Word document which declares Muhammad to be a prophet and the Bible and Qur'an to be of the "same Divine origin."
