Pasadena Mayor's Prayer Breakfast - Dr. Eric Walsh - 5/3/12

Published on May 28, 2012

Pasadena is one of just three cities in California with its own public health department. In 2010, Pasadena reached out to Dr. Eric Walsh, President of the California Academy of Preventive Medicine to become its Health Director. A sought after speaker, Eric blends deep insight and a compelling vision for what truly matters to the health of our city and its people.
.
.
My personal note:
First off, I admire the man for 'so far' not apologizing to his boisterous activist opponents...
Unlike, Dr. Ben Carson who after gaining my support when he spoke at that famous Presidential Breakfast... he then apologized for offending gays and lesbians...
Now, Dr. Eric Walsh's quote of 'MOTHER THERESA'20:20?
Well, it's appropriate that it was 20:20, because that equates to perfect human-vision...    I can see now that something is wrong with this picture...
Could this man really be for Present Truth, The Three Angel's Messages? Giving the undiluted Truth to a perishing defiantly sinful and godless world?
I remain confused and skeptical by this subliminal Catholic leaning and ecumenical Freudian slip!

Eric Walsh: Liberty of Conscience Denied in World & Church

ProphesyAgainTV

Published on May 4, 2014

In this age of secularism, immortality, and gross wickedness, God is calling upon His people to teach, preach, and live the principles of present-truth that are clearly laid out in His Word, just as He used the prophet Elijah, John the Baptist, Jesus, and even the Protestant Reformers during the Dark Ages. Unfortunately, just as in the aforementioned types, the messages of present-truth were not welcomed or tolerated, neither in the world nor in the churches. We have come to a point in history wherein individuals are prohibited from publicly upholding God's standard of marriage and disapproving of homosexuality without facing criticism and pressure from the LGBT community and its supporters. However, this is not the persecution that should alarm God's people; what else can be expected from the world? But when individuals' voices within the Seventh-day Adventist Denomination are being silenced because of their presenting and standing for Biblical principles of present-truth, this should be all the more disturbing. This denial of religious liberty in the churches calling themselves Seventh-day Adventist is a sure sign that God's people are being and will continue to be driven into the wilderness.

"We have far more to fear from within that from without. The hindrances to strength and success are far greater from the church itself than from the world." (1SM 122.3). The very church that was once a beacon of religious liberty is now stifling the liberties of those who choose to stand for the pillars and foundation of our message, and call sin by its right name while holding those in leadership positions accountable. But although in the wilderness, God's people will be nourished with both spiritual and literal bread and water. Will you choose to worship God in the wilderness or remain in the popular, fashionable, nominal churches and inevitably call evil good and good evil, while ostracizing God's servants? Choose ye this day who ye will serve!

The Time of Trouble

"At that time shall Michael stand up, the great Prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, everyone that shall be found written in the book." Daniel 12:1.

When the third angel's message closes, mercy no longer pleads for the guilty inhabitants of the earth. The people of God have accomplished their work. They have received "the latter rain," "the refreshing from the presence of the Lord," and they are prepared for the trying hour before them. Angels are hastening to and fro in heaven. An angel returning from the earth announces that his work is done; the final test has been brought upon the world, and all who have proved themselves loyal to the divine precepts have received "the seal of the living God." Then Jesus ceases His intercession in the sanctuary above. He lifts His hands and with a loud voice says, "It is done;" and all the angelic host lay off their crowns as He makes the solemn announcement: "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still." Revelation 22:11. Every case has been decided for life or death. Christ has made the atonement for His people and blotted out their sins. The number of His subjects is made up; "the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven," is about to be given to the heirs of salvation, and Jesus is to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.

When He leaves the sanctuary, darkness covers the inhabitants of the earth. In that fearful time the righteous must live in the sight of a holy God without an intercessor. The restraint which has been upon the wicked is removed, and Satan has entire control of the finally impenitent. God's long-suffering has ended. The world has rejected His mercy, despised His love, and trampled upon His law. The wicked have passed the boundary of their probation; the Spirit of God, persistently resisted, has been at last withdrawn. Unsheltered by divine grace, they have no protection from the wicked one. Satan will then plunge the inhabitants of the earth into one great, final trouble. As the angels of God cease to hold in check the fierce winds of human passion, all the elements of strife will be let loose. The whole world will be involved in ruin more terrible than that which came upon Jerusalem of old.

Sabbath Blessings

19 Thus said the Lord unto me; Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, whereby the kings of Judah come in, and by the which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem;

20 And say unto them, Hear ye the word of the Lord, ye kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates:

21 Thus saith the Lord; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;

22 Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.

23 But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.

24 And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the Lord, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;

25 Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall remain for ever.

26 And they shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places about Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plain, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meat offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise, unto the house of the Lord.

27 But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.

Lot Loses Everything Except His Life

Lot returned sorrowfully to his home and told the story of his failure. Then the angels bade him take his wife and two daughters who were yet in the house and leave. But Lot delayed. He had no true conception of the debasing iniquity practiced in that vile city. He did not realize the terrible necessity for God’s judgments to put a check on sin. Some of his children clung to Sodom, and the thought of leaving those whom he held dearest on earth seemed more than he could bear. It was hard to forsake his luxurious home and all the wealth of his whole life, to go forth a destitute wanderer. Stupefied with sorrow, he lingered. But for the angels, they would all have perished. The heavenly messengers took him and his wife and daughters by the hand and led them out of the city.

In all the cities of the plain, even ten righteous persons had not been found. But in answer to the patriarch’s prayer, the one man who feared God was snatched from destruction. The command was given with startling vehemence: “Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.” To cast one lingering look upon the city, to tarry for one moment from regret to leave so beautiful a home, would cost their life. The storm of divine judgment was only waiting that these poor fugitives might escape.

But Lot, confused and terrified, pleaded that he could not do as he was required. Living in that wicked city, his faith had grown dim. The Prince of heaven was by his side, yet he pleaded for his own life as though God, who had manifested such love for him, would not still preserve him. He should have trusted himself wholly to the divine Messenger. “Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.” Zoar was but a few miles from Sodom, and, like it, was corrupt and doomed to destruction. But Lot asked that it might be spared, urging that this was but a small request. His desire was granted. The Lord assured him, “I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.”

Again the command was given to hasten, for the fiery storm would be delayed but little longer. But one of the fugitives cast a look backward to the doomed city, and she became a monument of God’s judgment. If Lot himself had earnestly fled toward the mountains without one word of remonstrance, his wife also would have made her escape. His example would have saved her from the sin that sealed her doom. But his hesitancy caused her to lightly regard the divine warning. While her body was on the plain, her heart clung to Sodom, and she perished with it. She rebelled against God because His judgments involved her possessions and children in the ruin. She felt severely dealt with because the wealth that had taken years to accumulate must be left to destruction. Instead of thankfully accepting deliverance, she presumptuously looked back to desire the life of those who rejected the divine warning.

There are Christians who say, “I do not care to be saved unless my companion and children are saved.” They feel heaven would not be heaven without the presence of those who are so dear. But have those who cherish this feeling forgotten that they are bound by the strongest ties of love and loyalty to their Creator and Redeemer? Because our friends reject the Saviour’s love, shall we also turn away? Christ has paid an infinite price for our salvation, and no one who appreciates its value will despise God’s mercy because others choose to do so. The fact that others ignore His claims should arouse us to greater diligence, that we may honor God and lead all whom we can to accept His love.

The New Great Game Round-Up

The New Great Game Round-Up: May 11, 2014

CHRISTOPH GERMANN | MAY 12, 2014

U.S.- Russia Struggle for Influence in Central Asia, Georgia Joining the New Cold War, Azerbaijan Fighting NDI Activists & More!

*The Great Game Round-Up brings you the latest newsworthy developments regarding Central Asia and the Caucasus region. We document the struggle for influence, power, hegemony and profits in Central Asia and the Caucasus region between a U.S.-dominated NATO, its GCC proxies, Russia, China and other regional players.

At the beginning of this week, the Presidents of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey gathered in Tbilisi for their first high-level trilateral summit. All three leaders praised the close ties and pledged to further increase cooperation between the countries. They discussed, among other things, a possible transition from bilateral to trilateral cooperation in the defense sector. Moreover, the Georgian side informed the guests from Azerbaijan and Turkey about the progress of the major railway project linking the three countries, which should have been operational by the end of 2013 but was delayed several times and is still not anywhere near completion [emphasis mine]:

Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey Reiterate Partnership with Trilateral Summit

The focus of the summit, according to the officials, was joint energy and transportation projects, among them Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, which is currently under construction and which will connect Azerbaijan with Turkey via Georgia.

According to Georgian Economy Minister, Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the railway is expected to be put into operation before the end of 2015.

Azerbaijan Fights NDI’s Activists, Georgia Joins New Cold War

Azerbaijan and Georgia had planned to profit from the transit of U.S. military equipment out of Afghanistan and back to Europe and the United States by proposing a new route for the Northern Distribution Network (NDN) evolving around the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway. But the railway project will not be operational early enough to get any significant share of the NDN business, which means that the United States will have to rely on the NDN routes passing through Russian territory besides the problematic transit route via Pakistan. So far, Russia has refrained from shutting down the NDN in response to the reckless actions of the West in recent months. But if NATO continues to ramp up its Cold War posturing, this could obviously change. The latest delay of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway was not the only bad news for Washington on the day of the trilateral summit. While Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev met with his Georgian and Turkish counterparts in Tbilisi, Aliyev’s crackdown on the Azerbaijani opposition made the headlines once more due to the sentences handed down to some of Washington’s favorite youth activists:

Azerbaijan sentences eight opposition youth activists to jail

Azerbaijan sentenced eight opposition youth activists on Tuesday to between six and eight years in prison in a case that critics say highlights a government-led crackdown on dissent in the oil-rich former Soviet republic.

Eight activists of NIDA, an Azeri non-government youth movement, were jailed after being convicted on charges of hooliganism, possessing drugs and explosives as well as intent to cause public disorder.

All eight, aged between 18 and 28, were arrested in March 2013 during protests in the capital Baku against violence within the armed forces prompted by the death of conscript Jeyhun Gubadov at a barracks – the latest in a string of non-combat deaths under murky circumstances in the military.

Unfortunately, the report fails to mention one interesting character, who was detained twice along with NIDA activists after participating in the above-mentioned protests in March 2013. His name is Ruslan Asad and he is working as a Civic Program Assistant for the infamous National Democratic Institute (NDI). Furthermore, Asad is the co-founder of the OL! Movement, another civic movement in Azerbaijan similar to NIDA. In contrast to his fellow activists, Asad was released shortly after both arrests. Working for NDI pays off. But Asad’s role in the protests only confirmed the belief of the Aliyev regime that the Azerbaijani opposition is being directed from NDI’s Baku office and this led to a major dispute last year. Eventually the issue was resolved but activism and human rights are still the main points of contention between Azerbaijan and the United States:

In U.S. Calls To Hold Energy Rich Baku’s Feet To The Fire Over Rights

The United States should hold Azerbaijan accountable for its human rights record, even as the energy-rich country has come into renewed focus as a potential key player in weaning Europe off of Russian gas in the wake of the Ukraine crisis, U.S. officials say.

“I feel strongly that as we work closely with Azerbaijan on energy issues, we must also engage them just as forcefully on the declining human rights situation as part of our overall concern for energy security in the region,” U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, a Maryland Democrat, said in a statement to RFE/RL.

Even before the NIDA activists were sentenced, the Aliyev regime faced increasing criticism from the U.S. and the EU. Washington is always playing the human rights card if it seeks to put pressure on Baku. Considering the timing of these reports, the U.S. government’s latest “concerns” about human rights abuses might have something to do with Azerbaijan’s crackdown on the U.S.-backed Gülen movement. Azerbaijani President Aliyev will be careful not to antagonize his masters in Washington in a similar way like Turkish PM Erdogan. So while the Turkish Prime Minister is still teasing his NATO allies with a lucrative missile defense system deal, the Azerbaijani authorities are doing their best to please the U.S.-led military alliance. The same applies to the authorities in neighboring Georgia. Although NATO’s enlargement did not work out the way it was supposed to in Ukraine, NATO can still count on several other Russian neighbors to support its anti-Russian campaign:

Alasania Calls for NATO ‘Defensive Assets’ in Georgia

Georgia’s Defense Minister, Irakli Alasania, said in Washington on April 30 that in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine, NATO allies should deploy “defensive assets” in Georgia.

Air defense and anti-armor capabilities – “this is something we need to put in Georgia and Russians will understand that you are serious,” Alasania told the Washington-based think-tank Atlantic Council’s “Toward a Europe Whole and Free” conference on April 30.

Rick Rozoff of Stop NATO explained in a recent interview the importance of the Atlantic Council and the significance of the term “Europe whole and free”, which means no less than the consolidation of a unified Europe controlled by Brussels on behalf of the United States. During the conference U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s mask slipped, when he emphasized that “our entire model of global leadership is at stake” due to the Ukraine crisis. Georgian Defense Minister Alasania also stressed that the crisis marked a watershed. Before he met with U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel at the Pentagon this week, Alasania justified his call for NATO “defense assets” in Georgia and dismissed the idea that this move would provoke Russia by saying: “That’s the pre-Crimea thinking. There is a new reality. Russians are creating new realities on the ground.” Meanwhile, another world-class warmonger, British Foreign Secretary William Hague, visited Georgia to demonstrate NATO’s “support for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic ambitions”. The Georgian government is expected to substantiate these ambitions by signing an Association Agreement with the EU next month and the Georgian leaders know what will happen if they pull a Yanukovych:

Sergey Lavrov – Ask EU and U.S. about their plans if Georgia doesn’t do what they expect

It would be my advice to ask the EU and U.S. about their plans if Georgia’s government doesn’t do what they expect, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in Vienna, responding to the question from the broadcasting company “Imedi”, ‘ whether Russia-Georgia relations may tense, after Georgia signs the association agreement with EU. Lavrov says that addressees of this question are not Russia.

“We are not busy with changing the regimes, arranging colored revolutions, especially with brown spots, like it happened in Ukraine”, Russia’s Foreign Minister said.

U.S., Russia Struggle for Influence in Central Asia

Nowadays, color revolutions are frequently mentioned as a major threat by the authorities in Russia, China and Central Asia. Both the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) want to prevent any Ukrainian-style color revolutions on their territory. Especially the ‘stans could become the next targets for regime change. One reason for the coup d’état in Kiev was Washington’s determination to thwart Ukraine’s steering towards the Eurasian Customs Union. After the debacle in Crimea, the United States is now trying to maintain influence in Central Asia and this might imply more problems for the Moscow-led Customs Union:

How the West will oppose increased Russian influence in Central Asia

Most experts believe that the West, which would like to see a decrease in Russian influence in the region, will incite opposition in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to act. In Kyrgyzstan this process is already observable – Western-grant-funded non-governmental organizations are conducting counter-propaganda against the idea of pro-Russian integrative union. In connection with events in Ukraine, the West will do everything it can to strengthen this vector.

In the last few years, NGOs were increasingly involved in protests in Kyrgyzstan. These rallies are more often than not aimed at opposing Russian influence in the country, like for example the recent protests against the possible takeover of the Manas Transit Center by Russian companies. Predictably, the Eurasian Customs Union is a frequent target of demonstrations organized by Kyrgyz NGOs. Nevertheless, Bishkek is going ahead with Kyrgyzstan’s accession to the Customs Union and there are only a few details left to clarify before the documents will be signed. Kyrgyz President Atambaev discussed the issue with Russian President Putin, when the CSTO leaders met in Moscow a few days ago. However, one CSTO leader was notably absent:

Kazakhstan Skips CSTO Meeting in Moscow Today

A number of experts are noting that Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev was not present at tonight’s emergency meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Moscow, nor did he send representatives to the massive display of Russian armed forces, including the simulation of an ICBM launch on the eve of 9 May Victory Day celebrations.

Instead, he met with Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, the second-highest ranking American diplomat and the Obama Administrator’s top expert on Russia.

This week, William Burns visited Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to “affirm the United States’ longstanding commitment to the security and prosperity of Central Asia”. While the high-ranking U.S. diplomat met with two Central Asian leaders, Vladimir Putin showcased the preparedness of Russia’s strategic and defensive forces to the Presidents of Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. The Russian head of state also shared his concerns about the rise of fascism and neo-Nazism in Europe with his fellow CSTO leaders. Although the informal summit focused on the Ukraine crisis, NATO’s withdrawal from Afghanistan was discussed as well. According to Sapar Isakov, chief of the foreign policy department of the Kyrgyz President’s Office, the CSTO will hold large-scale exercises in Tajikistan later this year to prepare for a deterioration of the security situation in the region. In the light of the CIA’s latest masterstroke, this is certainly not the worst idea:

CIA, U.S. military at odds over Afghanistan pullback plan

The CIA also plans this summer to stop paying the salaries of Afghan paramilitary forces that it has armed and trained for more than a decade to help fight the Taliban-led insurgency in the country’s east, near the Pakistani border. It is unclear what will happen to the militias.

Pentagon officials also are exploring whether the military can take over financial support of the CIA-backed militias to keep the Afghans from leaving the fight or switching sides, officials said. Some of the frontline units already have been disbanded, according to a report in the Daily Beast.

China’s Railway Stations under Attack

China is currently experiencing at first hand what a rapidly deteriorating security situation means. Last week’s terrorist attack at the important Urumqi railway station highlighted once again the terror problem in Xinjiang, which can be attributed to a great extent to Washington’s East Turkestan project. German politician and former OSCE vice-president Willy Wimmer interpreted the recent high-profile attacks in Urumqi and Kunming as a warning to the Chinese authorities reminding them that China is also on NATO’s hit list. Before Beijing had any time to respond to the Urumqi attack another railway station was attacked, this time in Guangzhou, the capital and largest city of Guangdong province:

China Knife Attack: 6 Wounded In Stabbing Spree At Guangzhou Railway Station

Chinese police shot and wounded a suspect who attacked passengers at a busy railway station in southern China on Tuesday, leaving six people injured in the third high-profile assault on civilians at a train station in a little more than two months.

The latest incident happened late in the morning at the Guangzhou Railway Station, city police said on their microblog. Officers arrived as passengers were being hacked, and shot and subdued a male suspect with a knife after he failed to respond to a police warning, the statement said.

At this point, it is unclear whether there is any “Uyghur connection” to the attack in Guangzhou but the detained suspect will have plenty of time to explain his motivation. A migrant worker who helped to capture the assailant was rewarded with 5.000 yuan and celebrated by the Chinese media. Lately, the Chinese authorities have been trying to engage the population in the fight against terrorism by rewardingpeople who inform the government about “potential hazards to society”, which include all kinds of things from growing beards to illegal religious activities. After the stabbing spree in Guangzhou, armed police patrols were enhanced nationwide and Beijing will introduce new anti-terror legislation next month. But this will not be enough to solve the persistent problem:

One assailant shot dead, another captured in attack on Xinjiang police

Police shot dead one assialant and captured another on Thursday in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, local authorities said in a statement.

The attack occurred at about 1:20 p.m. in the city of Aksu when police checked a suspect vehicle based on a tipoff from residents, said the statement.

On Monday, China released its first blue paper on national security focusing predominantly on terrorism. The report mentioned, for example, the threat posed by religious extremists who are “manipulated by hostile western forces”. Finding a proper way of dealing with the terror threat, is one China’s biggest challenges right now. In the wake of the latest attacks, some voices in the Chinese media have cautioned against neglecting the underlying social and economic problems of the conflict. But the Chinese authorities seem to prefer a hard-line approach and the deterrent effect [emphasis mine]:

5 convicted in Kashgar on terror-related charges

Five people were recently sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for separatism and endangering national security, Xinjiang Daily on Thursday.

The trial of the five was jointly carried out by the municipal and prefectural people’s courts in Kashgar. A gallery of more than 300 people, including local cadres and students, witnessed the trial.

The five were convicted in five separate cases of using secure digital memory cards with content from the East Turkistan Islamic Movement; using audiovisual materials downloaded from the Internet to spread jihadist ideas; instigating terrorism attacks in Afghanistan and Pakistan; preaching extremist religious ideas to young people; and keeping machetes and other weapons for planned attacks. The prison sentences ranged from 7 to 15 years.

BUILD A KIT

BUILD A KIT

A disaster supplies kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.

Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and take essentials with you. You will probably not have time to search for the supplies you need or shop for them.

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days.

Additionally, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days or even a week, or longer. Your supplies kit should contain items to help you manage during these outages.

Rescue 2014

1. On March 8, 2014 a Boeing 777 - Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370, was lost somewhere after its take off from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing. The plane and its 239 passengers and crew has yet to be found.

2. On April 16, 2014 a South Korean Ferry MV Sewol en route to Jeju from Incheon sank with 281 students who were on a school trip. The Ferry sank and many of the victims have been extrated from the vessel by disaster response divers.

3.On May 13, 2014 a fire in a coal mine in SomaTurkey killed at last count 238 people.  The fire may still be burning today?

What do the 3 events have in common?

Well, first off, a rescue was started immediately for 'survivors' in each disaster.  Secondly, the death toll in all these 'accidents' surpasses 200 victims.

The Sign to Leave Large Cities

June 21

When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains. Matthew 24:15, 16.

The time is not far distant, when, like the early disciples, we shall be forced to seek a refuge in desolate and solitary places. As the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman armies was the signal for flight to the Judean Christians, so the assumption of power on the part of our nation [the United States] in the decree enforcing the papal sabbath will be a warning to us. It will then be time to leave the large cities, preparatory to leaving the smaller ones for retired homes in secluded places among the mountains.

For years I have been given special light that we are not to center our work in the cities. The turmoil and confusion that fill these cities, the conditions brought about by the labor unions and the strikes, would prove a great hindrance to our work. Men are seeking to bring those engaged in the different trades under bondage to certain unions. This is not God’s planning, but the planning of a power that we should in no wise acknowledge. God’s Word is fulfilling; the wicked are binding themselves up in bundles ready to be burned.

The trades unions and confederacies of the world are a snare. Keep out of them, and away from them, brethren. Have nothing to do with them. Because of these unions and confederacies, it will soon be very difficult for our institutions to carry on their work in the cities.... Educate our people to get out of the cities into the country, where they can obtain a small piece of land, and make a home for themselves and their children....

Erelong there will be such strife and confusion in the cities, that those who wish to leave them will not be able.

We are not to locate ourselves where we will be forced into close relations with those who do not honor God.... A crisis is soon to come in regard to the observance of Sunday....

The Sunday party is strengthening itself in its false claims, and this will mean oppression to those who determine to keep the Sabbath of the Lord....

If in the providence of God we can secure places away from the cities, the Lord would have us do this. There are troublous times before us.

Does Pasadena have the right to discipline Eric Walsh for expressing his views?

Pasadena put Public Health Director Eric Walsh on leave for his churlish remarks on gays, evolution
Would Pasadena want a health director who claimed tobacco didn't cause heart disease?

My post last week on the case of Pasadena Public Health Director Eric Walsh — whose churlish remarks about gays, the prophet Muhammad, Jay Z and evolution, among other things, have caused Pasadena to put him on leave while the city investigates — drew an unexpectedly large and sharp response.

Some readers questioned Walsh’s fitness to hold office; others vigorously defended his right to his beliefs. Though I never called for him to be dismissed (merely suggesting that he should prepared to explain himself), some also accused me of jumping to trample his 1st Amendment rights. One reader called me an anti-Christian bigot. Oh well.

OPINION L.A.Pasadena's anti-evolution, anti-gay health director has some explaining to doSEE ALL RELATED

On a more serious note, the controversy surrounding Walsh raises legitimate questions about how far a public employee can go in expressing his views without compromising his duties. It’s not simply a matter of saying he has a right to his opinions and that the government must tolerate all speech by its employees. Imagine, for instance, a police officer who openly advocated white supremacy. Could that officer be trusted to patrol a neighborhood that was predominantly black? Would juries accept his testimony in cases involving minority defendants? The answers are clearly no, and the law, recognizing that, permits government agencies to discipline employees for their speech in some instances.
The controversy surrounding Walsh raises legitimate questions about how far a public employee can go in expressing his views without compromising his duties.-

As Eugene Volokh, the conservative legal scholar at UCLA, wrote this week, “The government may discipline employees when the speech tends to disrupt work relationships or relationships with clients or the public, if the disruption exceeds the value of the speech.” (Volokh went on to write that Walsh’s comments may be protected if they are regarded as political expression, though he did not say specifically that those protections would be enough.)

In other words, if Pasadena concludes that Walsh’s denunciation of homosexuality interferes with the city’s ability to provide services to gays, it might have the right to discipline him, even though he has a right to hold and express his opinions.

That’s hardly novel, by the way. This newspaper’s ethics guidelines, which I helped to write, similarly constrain the speech of some employees. If a political reporter at The Times, for instance, were to put up a lawn sign supporting a candidate he was covering, or donate money to that candidate, he could lose his beat or even his job, even though he has a constitutional right to hold those views. And we’re an organization that feels pretty strongly about speech.

But that misses what seems to me the more salient point in Walsh’s case. Not only did he pop off about the various kinds of people he believes are condemned by God, he also specifically rejected evolution, which he regards as the mischievous work of Satan rather than a fact of science. Those remarks suggest not just intolerance or religious fervor but active rejection of science important to carrying out his work as a health officer. In that instance, his comments raise questions not so much about his beliefs as about his competence. Would Pasadena want a health director who claimed tobacco did not cause heart disease or who insisted that climate change was a myth?

There, I would argue, Pasadena officials have reason to ask whether Walsh has demonstrated unfitness for his job, irrespective of what he thinks about Jay Z.

Pope & U.N. Share Goals: World & Church Ripe For N.S.L

Daniel 11:40 foretells the return of the King of the North, the Papacy, as a whirlwind, denoting rapidity, and intensity, to overthrow the ruling principles of the King of the South--atheism, and immorality. It is quite evident that both Satanic powers (kings) are now striving for the mastery, and America is polarized as a result. As the prevalence and legalization of secularism and licentiousness become even more apparent, we also see and hear an outcry from Americans calling for this nation to return to God in the form of prayer, worship, and moral/religious legislation. Students of Bible Prophecy understand that the end result of the legalization of morality is the establishment of the National Sunday Law to be initiated first in America and then to spread to the various other countries, with persecution for dissenters. Both the world and the church are being systematically conditioned to receive the Mark of the Beast. The question that each one of us must ponder is, "will I be overthrown with the MANY that will bow at this crisis?" Let us watch and pray!

‘Black Mass’ on Harvard Campus Canceled

Maya Rhodan @m_rhodan May 12, 2014

Critics of the re-enactment that was planned as an educational demonstration of a historical "black mass," a ritual that mocks the Roman Catholic Church, included the university's president and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Boston, who called the idea "repugnant"

Updated 8:45 p.m. ET

A Harvard University student club’s planned re-enactment of a satanic ritual was canceled at the last minute, amid backlash from students, alumni and the Archdiocese of Boston.

The “black mass,” to be hosted by the Harvard Extension School’s Cultural Studies Club, would have taken place at a pub on the school’s Cambridge campus Monday night. The club called it a “re-enactment” that was intended solely for educational purposes. The ritual was historically performed to mock the Roman Catholic Church.

About an hour before the ritual would have been held, the dean of student affairs at Harvard’s Extension School said in a statement that the black mass had been moved to an off-campus location. Fox Boston later reported that the group then canceled the event because it was unable to secure a new location.

Dean Robert Neugeboren said he was glad that the students finally decided to cancel, given religious leaders’ and other students’ firmly expressed reservations about the event.

Earlier on Monday, the Cultural Studies Club had faced strong criticism of its plans. Cardinal Sean O’Malley, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Boston, called the event “repugnant” in an interview with the Boston Globe. He added, “There’s a great fascination with evil in the world, but you know, it doesn’t lead to anything good.”

University president Drew Faust denounced the event in a statement, saying that “the decision by a student club to sponsor an enactment of this ritual is abhorrent.” She then said that students still have a right to free expression: “Vigorous and open discussion and debate are essential to the pursuit of knowledge, and we must uphold these values even in the face of controversy.”

A petition started by a member of the school’s Catholic Students group had hundreds of signatures, the Harvard Crimson reports, and a prayer vigil would have coincided with the black mass.

U.S. Defense Secretary encourages review of military ban on transexuals

"Every qualified American who wants to serve our country should have an opportunity," Hagel told ABC News.

WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) --Although the Pentagon explicitly bans transgendered Americans from fighting for their country, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is ready to consider changing the rules.

"I go back to the bottom line: Every qualified American who wants to serve our country should have an opportunity, if they fit the qualifications and can do it," Hagel told ABC News.

If reviewed and negated, Hagel acknowledged that more nuanced policies would have to be incorporated into combat procedures.

"The issue of transgender is bit more complicated because it has a medical component to it,"
he continued. "These issues require medical attention. Austere locations where we put our men and women in many cases don't always provide that kind of opportunity."

Earlier this year Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders said there is "no compelling medical rationale" to ban transgendered soldiers from serving in the military.

Martin Feldstein: A weaker euro for a stronger Europe

Europe's policymakers must intervene to weaken their currency

The Greek budget myth

Despite the recent upturn in some of its member countries, the euro zone's economy remains in the doldrums, with the overall rate of annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth this year likely to be only slightly higher than one per cent. Even Germany's growth rate is below two per cent, while GDP is still declining in France, Italy and Spain. And this slow rate of growth has kept the euro zone's total unemployment rate at a painfully high 12 per cent.

Slow growth and high unemployment are not the euro zone's only problems. The annual inflation rate, at just 0.5 per cent, is now so close to zero that even a minor shock could push it into negative territory and trigger a downward price spiral. Deflation would weaken aggregate demand by raising the real (inflation-adjusted) value of household and corporate debt, and by increasing real interest rates. Lower demand could, in turn, cause the fall in prices to accelerate, sending prices into a dangerous tailspin.

There are few if any panaceas in economics. But a sharp decline in the euro's exchange rate - say, by 15 per cent - would remedy many of the euro zone's current economic problems. A weaker euro would raise the cost of imports and the potential prices of exports, thus pushing up the euro zone's overall inflation rate. Devaluation would also boost average euro zone GDP growth by stimulating exports and encouraging Europeans to substitute domestically produced goods and services for imported items. Although competitiveness within the euro zone would be unaffected, a weaker euro would significantly improve the external balance with the rest of the world, which accounts for about half of euro zone trade.

European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi has emphasised his concern that the euro's rise over the past three years has increased the risk of deflation. But it was his famous declaration in July 2012 that the ECB would do "whatever it takes" to preserve the euro that, while successful in reducing interest rates in the distressed countries of the euro zone periphery, also contributed to the euro's current strength.

Today, neither Mr Draghi's recent statements nor the prospect of an American-style programme of large-scale asset purchases (also known as quantitative easing) has caused the euro to weaken or the inflation rate to move back towards the target level of two per cent. So the operative question is how to reduce the euro's relative value while maintaining the perception of stability that Mr Draghi helped to establish in 2012.

Because quantitative easing by the ECB has been advocated as a way to weaken the euro, it is worthwhile to examine the impact of its use by the Federal Reserve on the value of the dollar and the inflation rate in the United States.

The short answer is that it did very little to affect either. The real trade-weighted value of the dollar is now at the same level that it was in 2007, before the onset of the Great Recession. It rose briefly during the peak crisis year of 2008, as global investors sought the safe haven of dollar-denominated assets, but retreated during 2009 to its previous level. The dollar's value then remained relatively stable during more than three years of quantitative easing - and actually rose during 2013, when the Fed's asset purchases reached a high of more than $1 trillion.

Of course, other factors influenced the dollar's value during this period as well. Nonetheless, the behaviour of the dollar's exchange rate during the period of quantitative easing offers no support for the proposed use of large-scale asset purchases by the ECB as a way to bring about euro depreciation.

The Fed's quantitative easing also did not cause an increase in the rate of inflation. The consumer price index rose by 1.6 per cent in 2010, when quantitative easing began, then increased somewhat faster in 2011 and 2012, before dropping back to a gain of just 1.5 per cent in 2013, the peak year for asset purchases.

If the ECB wants to reduce the value of the euro and increase the euro zone's near-term inflation rate, the only reliable way to do so may be by direct intervention in the currency market - that is, selling euros and buying a basket of other currencies. While direct intervention to weaken the euro would create challenges in other parts of the world, policymakers in the US and elsewhere should recognise the importance of a more competitive euro to the future of the European economy.

Nouriel Roubini: We’re at the very beginning of a credit bubble

May 8, 2014, 2:37 PM ET

Nouriel Roubini whipped out the “b” word on Thursday, telling Maria Bartiromo at Fox Business Network that we’re at the beginning of a credit bubble. We’re not on the brink of a major collapse, but we might be getting there, he cautioned.

BloombergNouriel Roubini

The New York University professor and chairman of Roubini Global Economics is known as something of an economic pessimist, though he’s become slightly more optimistic recently. (Still, here are six of his risks.)

The Federal Reserve will keep its key lending rate low even after it lifts off from near zero, where it has rested for the past half decade, Roubini said. That slow process of normalization will keep the spigot of borrowing flowing, helping support the economy. But it will also lead to risky lending practices. Hence, a bubble is inflating that could eventually pop.

He’s by no means the first person to make this claim: the question of financial stability is one of the key criticisms of the Fed’s accommodative policies. Roubini didn’t criticize the central bank, so much as say that the Fed is damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you don’t.

Roubini cited the return of some of the key characters associated with the period before the last financial collapse: Lots of low quality bond sales, debt without strong protections for bondholders, and a certain kind of risky security called PIK-toggle bonds. The economist says:

“All the risky things that were happening back in ’06 and ‘07 are back again to the same level, if not more. So we are in the beginning of a credit bubble, but just the beginning.”

So file this one under “not imminent.” The risks won’t build until about a year or two down the road, he said.

If it’s not happening immediately, when will it happen? Valuations are getting pretty high, prompting junk bond guru Martin Fridson to say the asset class is in a state of “extreme overvaluation.” Credit is in such high demand right now that it’s prompting big name investors like DoubleLine Capital’s Jeffrey Gundlach to declare that the asset class is too crowded.

Citi credit strategist Matt King, who is out with an extensive report this week about the current state of the credit market, has this chart to show:

King says the eventual reversal out of credit seems “problematic”, comparing it to a rubber band that will eventually snap back. Nonetheless, like Roubini, King doesn’t see the reversal happening immediately, citing money that continues to rush into the market. For now, credit investors appear to be stuck in an uneasy equilibrium.
