Dear Friends in Together for Europe,
I know that you are gathered in Munich, Bavaria, from many Movements and Groups, for your meeting called “Encounter – Reconciliation – Future”.
You are right. It is time to get together, to face the problems of our day with a true European spirit. Apart from some visible walls, other invisible walls are being strengthened which tend to divide our continent. These walls are being built in people’s hearts. They are walls made of fear and aggression, a failure to understand people of different backgrounds or faith. They are walls of political and economic selfishness, without respect for the life and dignity of every person.
Europe finds itself in a complex and highly mobile world, which is ever more globalised and therefore ever less Eurocentric.
If we are aware of these momentous issues, then we must have the courage to say: we need change! Europe is called to reflect and to ask itself whether its immense heritage, so permeated with Christianity, belongs in a museum or is still able to inspire culture and to offer its treasures to the whole of humankind.
You are meeting so as to look together at these challenges facing Europe and to highlight testimonies of life in society which enable networking, so as to welcome and show solidarity towards those who are weak and disadvantaged, to build bridges and overcome conflicts whether they are open or latent.
Europe’s history is an ongoing encounter between Heaven and earth. Heaven indicates openness to the Transcendent, to God, which has always been characteristic of European people. Earth represents their practical and concrete ability to address situations and problems.
You too, Christian communities and movements which began in Europe, are bearers of many charisms, which are gifts of God to be made available to others. “Together for Europe” is a unifying power with the clear aim of translating the basic values of Christianity into concrete responses to the challenges of a continent in crisis.
Your lifestyle is based on mutual love, lived out with Gospel radicalness. A culture of reciprocity means talking things over, esteeming one another, welcoming one another, helping one another. It means appreciating the diversity of charisms so as to move together towards unity and enrich it. The tangible and clear presence of Christ among you is the witness which leads to faith.
Every authentic unity draws on the wealth of diversity which forms it – like a family which grows in unity in so far as its members can fully and fearlessly be themselves. If Europe as a whole wants to be a family of peoples, it should put the human person back at the centre; it should be an open and welcoming continent, and continue to establish ways of working together that are not only economic but also social and cultural.
God always brings newness. You have experienced this so often in your lives! Are we open to surprises today too? You, who have answered the Lord’s call courageously, are called to show his newness in your lives and bring to life the fruits of the Gospel, fruits that have grown from Christian roots, which for the last 2,000 years have nourished Europe. And you will bear even greater fruit! Maintain the freshness of your charisms; continue to be “Together” and extend it further! Make your homes, communities and cities into workshops of communion, friendship and fraternity, which can bring people together and be open to the whole world.
Together for Europe? Today this is more than ever necessary. In a Europe made up of many nations, you bear witness to the fact that we are children of one Father and brothers and sisters to one another. You are a precious seed of hope, so that Europe can rediscover its vocation to contribute to the unity of all.

3 police officers shot dead in Baton Rouge

Three police officers have been fatally shot in Baton Rouge, La., and three others were wounded, according to East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Department.



East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux III said one gunman was shot dead, but two other suspects may be at large.

"At this point in time the scene is still active," he said. "We are advising the public to please take an alternate route and steer clear of the area."

Corporal L'Jean Mckneely Jr., spokesman for the Baton Rouge Police Department, said officers secured the area around the suspect and sent a robot device in after the shooting, “making sure there aren’t any explosives in the area."


"So we’re taking every precaution necessary to make sure that all our lives are safe," he said.

Officers responding initially to a call did exchange gunfire with the suspect, who has not been identified, Mckneely said."There was no talking. There was shooting,” he said.





A sheriff’s spokesman, Casey Rayborn Hicks, urged issued a statement asking the public to report anything suspicious in the area to 911.

Two Baton Rouge police officers and one East Baton Rouge sheriff's deputy are dead, according to WBRZ-TV and The Advocate newspaper.

"They are investigating," Baton Route Mayor Kip Holden told MSNBC. "Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything."


Kelly Zimmerman of Our Lady of the Lake said the hospital received five patients. Three were dead, one is in critical condition and the other is in fair condition, Zimmerman said.





As authorities continued to investigate the shootings less than a mile from police headquarters, both lanes of Airline Highway were shut down from Goodwood to Old Hammond. Old Hammond is closed to Tara Boulevard.

"Rest assured, every resource available to the state of Louisiana will be used to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice," Gov. John Bel Edwards said in a tweet, calling the attack unspeakable and unjustified.


The scene is still active, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks told The Advocate.


About 20 police officers wearing bulletproof vests are near the scene and a helicopter was flying overhead, the paper reported.

Kyle Suire, owner of the Jambalaya Shoppe restaurant says “they have 200 cop in our parking lot.” And “they’ve got everything on lockdown.” He says he arrived too late this morning to see what happened. “I saw all the cops rushing in.”

The Baton Rouge mayor's office urged people to stay home, stay off the streets for now in immediate wake of police shooting, according to The Advocate.


A witness told WBRZ-TV that a man was dressed in black with his face covered was shooting indiscriminately when he walked out between a convenience store and car wash across from Hammond Air Plaza. Police closed the streets between the police department’s headquarters and Interstate 12.


Michael Vinsanau of WBRZ tweeted that more than a dozen marked and unmarked police cars sped to the scene, and that a SWAT team was on location. State police armed with rifles are posted blocks away, Vinsanau tweeted.

Baton Rouge police have been under scrutiny after officers fatally shot Alton Sterling, 37, on July 5 while he was pinned to the ground. Sterling was black and the officers involved were white. Sterling’s funeral was Friday. Police have said they thought he was reaching for a gun.

The Dangerous Faith of a Notorious Drug Lord

Nothing and no one will make me change: not even the lies or the rumors that are said against me. I have decided to continue being an upright, honest, responsible, and brave man. I have decided to continue fighting for the full realization of my ideals.

So opens Pensamientos (Thoughts), the book penned by Nazario Moreno Gonzalez, the late leader of two of the most brutal narcogangs of Mexico, La Familia Michoacán and its spinoff the Knights Templar. Also known as El Más Loco (the Craziest One), Moreno was one of the most wanted and most perplexing of all the narco leaders in a nation that has been rife with internecine warfare among factions, cartels, and vigilante groups.

From his rise to prominence in 2006 to his death in 2014, Moreno managed to grow and run La Familia and the Knights Templar while simultaneously establishing a cult of personality that merged Catholic devotion, evangelical rhetoric, and a foundation of divine judgment. To this day, indeed, many people in Mexico contend that he has not died—seeing his wake as a conspiracy and his dead body as a hoax—but believing that his spirit continues to protect and guide those of Michoacán. Even his name, Nazario, seems to play into his construction of a narco holy image: It means “one from Nazareth,” a clear parallel to Jesus.

Central to the story of Moreno was his book, Pensamientos. It was one of the mandatory reading materials for new recruits into La Familia and the “Bible” of the organization. With a subtitle that reads, “Michoacán is a land of liberty and the home of brave men,” and an acknowledgement for “God: to whom I owe everything that I am,” Pensamientos is 101 pages of aphorisms, pixelated images, short essays, and motivational quotations composed by Moreno.

In his trip to Mexico in February, Pope Francis stopped in Michoacán and chastised Catholic bishops, priests, and other religious leaders for not fighting harder against groups like La Familia that offer a life of violence, extortion, and vice. After receiving a traditional souvenir sombrero, Pope Francis urged the faithful of the terror-stricken Western state to reconsider violent choices. “Jesus would never ask us to be assassins,” he said. “Instead, he calls us to be disciples.”

Yet in Mexico the general feeling is that the business of fear and extortion will continue as though it were normal. “I thought that the impact [of the Pope’s visit] would be greater,” said Raul Perez Lopez, a psychologist who has worked with the police in Michoacán for 8 years. “But really, the church has lost a lot of credibility.” People remain wary of all institutions, from gangs to the police, and from the church to the government.

Amid this chaos, there is the creation that Moreno left behind: a new cult of devotion that has proven to be both dangerous and powerful. With his book, Moreno outlined a vision that melded religion and violence, adding to the complicated associations and loyalties in a country torn apart by conflict.

Most analyses of the origins of La Familia trace its beginning to a nightclub, a message, and a collection of severed heads. On the night of September 7, 2006, a group of masked men tossed five bloody heads onto the packed dance floor of a club in Michoacán, with a message that read: “La Familia does not kill for money, does not kill women, does not kill innocent people. Only those who should die are killed. May everybody know this: This is divine justice.” It was at this point that Moreno formally broke his ties with Los Zetas, the predominant narco force of the Northeastern regions of Mexico, and began to build his own order in Michoacán.

Michoacán, Moreno’s birthplace, is just west of Mexico City and is currently known for both its drugs and its violence. The state has a long history of cultivating marijuana, poppies, and coca, and is also home to a significant freight port. As a result, Michoacán has been a crucial area for the shipping out of drugs and other contraband—much of which makes its way into the United States. In addition to its strategic geographic location, Michoacán has witnessed some of the most violent episodes in Mexico’s decade-long drug war. Tens of thousands have been killed, several thousands more have been displaced, and almost all in the state live amid crossfire since the Mexican government declared war against organized crime and narcotrafficking in December 2006. Indeed, just 48 hours before the pope’s arrival, a U.S. citizen was found dead with signs of torture, having suffered burns, and a gunshot wound in the spine.

It was in this context that Moreno sought to develop his own source of order, one that would revolve around a religious cult of personality built on his image and actions. The union of religion, violence, and the cults of saints has a long and complex history in Mexico. Cults of devotion, for instance, are common forms of practice in Catholic expression in the country, and they range from the very small and local—think dedications to regional saints or figures—to the large and global, such as the devotion to La Virgen de Guadalupe. With a wide array of practices, displays, and devotions, these cults are part of the creative nature of lived Catholicism in Mexico.

For many in the illicit worlds of Mexico, therefore, devotion to saints and figures are just a common part of social and spiritual life. There is La Santa Muerta, a skeletal figure with a black robe and hood similar to that of the Grim Reaper, who has become the unsettling patron saint of drug dealers and sex workers. San Jesús Malverde, another favorite for those who trade in illegal markets, is a Robin Hood figure recognizable by his mustache and handkerchief. And while these popular figures are not recognized nor sanctioned by the Catholic Church, there are particular devotions to the Church’s more mainstream saints among the down-and-out of Mexico. Saint Jude, known as the patron saint of hopeless causes, has become one of the favorites among gangsters, drug users, and the urban poor. And even Saint John Paul II has become a part of this mix. “For some border patrol agents,” said Jennifer Hughes, a professor of history at University of California, Riverside, who studies lived religion in Mexico, “an image of John Paul II on your car could be a sign that you are narcotrafficking.”

Drugs and violence aside, Michoacán is also known as one of Mexico’s most religious states, in a country where more than 90 percent of people identify as Christian (83 percent claim Catholicism). Although Pope Francis chastised the churches in Mexico, their cultural and social power still remains strong in places like Michoacán.

If you would like to become a good Christian, remember that you should not focus on building walls or barriers, but rather in uniting communities. Nazario Moreno, Pensamientos

“He was Christian, not Catholic,” emphasized Father Germán Cobos, a 75-year-old priest in Michoacán who has lived and served in the state his whole life. This distinction, he said, is key for understanding El Más Loco’s religious underpinnings and the ways in which he grew the organization of La Familia. Although Moreno was raised Catholic, he was deeply influenced by evangelical Christianity, especially during his time trafficking cocaine in the United States.

As a narco leader in Mexico, Moreno bypassed many of the prevalent Catholic symbols in the country and opted to create his own religious vision, which supported his cult of personality. He had new recruits read John Eldredge’s Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man’s Soul, for instance, which is a popular book among American evangelicals and extols what scholars label as “muscular Christianity.” The book centers around the image of men as heroes who go in to fight battles, save, and protect the women in their lives, and live a life of adventure. Underlying all of this, of course, is a deep devotion to God.

Moreno coupled Eldredge’s book with his own, Pensamientos, as part of the introductory exercises for joining La Familia. Every spread of the book is split in two. The left pages throughout the text include an image—typically of low quality and almost certainly copied-and-pasted from the Internet—with a quotation from Moreno. For instance, one page shows a picture of a family of four on a beach (not Moreno’s family) and is followed with the quote, “I have been given the most beautiful gift from life: my family. Nothing else is important.” Another picture, of Joseph Stalin, bears the statement: “Only those who construct the future have the right to judge the past.” The right pages bear the longer statements by Moreno, such as poems and short essays. Unlike the pithy sayings on the left, which go unsigned, Moreno’s longer writings always end with “El Más Loco.”

After reading this book, Moreno’s recruits had to swear an oath of allegiance, one that emphasized courage, dedication, morality, and strength. “He put in the religious element to add the mystical side to his group,” Father Cobos continued. “This is how he managed the group. He gave it a Christian bent—fighting for a good cause, fighting corruption—but it was just the simple words.”

I asked God for strength, and he gave me difficulties to make me strong.
I asked for wisdom, and he gave me problems to resolve.
I asked for prosperity, and he gave me a brain and muscles to work.
I asked for valor, and he gave me obstacles to overcome.
I did not receive anything that I asked for, but I have gotten everything that I needed.

This emphasis on books and words made Moreno’s efforts unique in a nation that has such a rich history of religious iconography. “What’s interesting about El Más Loco is that he’s pursuing the text over image,” Hughes said. “But I think that it maybe gives him a certain authority and control over practice precisely because the religious images in the nation belong to others, they don’t belong just to the cartels.”

And while setting Moreno’s leadership and cartel apart, this dedication to text has also fostered a strong devotion to La Familia even after his death, which in another religiously loaded turn, technically happened twice. Officials from the Mexican federal police proudly claimed that they had killed Moreno back in 2010, but residents of Michoacán still said that they saw him walking the streets. Saint Nazario statuettes began popping up in homes and storefronts as word spread of his immortality. Other rumors spread about his continued leadership of the Knights Templar. Either way, police finally caught up with him in 2014. Although his death was confirmed with pictures and broadcast throughout the nation, many in Michoacán still believe he could be alive. If the federal government was wrong about his death in 2010, they could be wrong yet again.

As the cartels continue without Moreno, his book, Pensamientos, endures. With platitudes such as “Nothing is so hard that it cannot be overcome with strength,” and “It is preferable to be a man blessed by God who lives in peace than to be a rich coward,” the text encourages the poor, the lost, and the disenfranchised to take up arms and fight with religious zeal. It is, as Daniel Hernandez, author ofDown and Delirious in Mexico City, told me, “some kind of syncretic religious belief that permits them to maintain a religiosity while being involved in organized crime.”

As Mexican authorities contemplate what to do about the rising violence and the incessant market for drugs and other illicit goods, there is the question of what to do about the religious elements among some of these groups. With Moreno’s successes could come similar tactics among other rival groups. Police and state authorities alike must grow to understand the roots of these religious elements in order to counteract their appeal. But in the meantime, there will still remain the codes, the rules, and the books. “I invite you all to reflect with me and to see that the life that we used to lead was not a life at all and that we should continue forward with FAITH in God,” states the final page of Pensamientos. “He will give us wisdom, grace, and forgiveness.” With the acts that Moreno and his organizations have perpetuated, it seems that forgiveness may remain far off.

'Real peace can never be secured by compromising principle'

Jesus Himself never purchased peace by compromise. His heart overflowed with love for the whole human race, but He was never indulgent to their sins. He was too much their friend to remain silent while they were pursuing a course that would ruin their souls,—the souls He had purchased with His own blood. He labored that man should be true to himself, true to his higher and eternal interest. The servants of Christ are called to the same work, and they should beware lest, in seeking to prevent discord, they surrender the truth. They are to “follow after the things which make for peace” (Romans 14:19); but real peace can never be secured by compromising principle. And no man can be true to principle without exciting opposition. A Christianity that is spiritual will be opposed by the children of disobedience. But Jesus bade His disciples, “Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul.” Those who are true to God need not fear the power of men nor the enmity of Satan. In Christ their eternal life is secure. Their only fear should be lest they surrender the truth, and thus betray the trust with which God has honored them.

It is Satan's work to fill men's hearts with doubt. He leads them to look upon God as a stern judge. He tempts them to sin, and then to regard themselves as too vile to approach their heavenly Father or to excite His pity. The Lord understands all this. Jesus assures His disciples of God's sympathy for them in their needs and weaknesses. Not a sigh is breathed, not a pain felt, not a grief pierces the soul, but the throb vibrates to the Father's heart.

The Bible shows us God in His high and holy place, not in a state of inactivity, not in silence and solitude, but surrounded by ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of holy intelligences, all waiting to do His will. Through channels which we cannot discern He is in active communication with every part of His dominion. But it is in this speck of a world, in the souls that He gave His only-begotten Son to save, that His interest and the interest of all heaven is centered. God is bending from His throne to hear the cry of the oppressed. To every sincere prayer He answers, “Here am I.” He uplifts the distressed and downtrodden. In all our afflictions He is afflicted. In every temptation and every trial the angel of His presence is near to deliver.

Canadian priest charged for stealing $500,000 from Syrian refugees

Montreal (AFP) - A Canadian priest was charged this week for stealing more than half a million dollars (US$400,000) intended for the resettlement of Syrian refugees, and then gambling it away.

Amer Saka, 51, a clergyman of the Chaldean Catholic Church -- based in Baghdad -- had allegedly collected the funds from more than 20 donors to support refugees arriving from the war-torn nation, according to local police.


"This investigation spanned throughout the province of Ontario, the United States and other countries where refugees were attempting to come to Canada," police in London, Ontario said in a statement on Thursday.

Bishop Emanuel Shaleta, head of the Chaldean Catholic Church in Canada, told The London Free Press that Saka had called him to say he had gambled and lost all of the money.

The priest had been involved in a sponsorship program for refugees for several years. He was suspended by the diocese of Hamilton, Ontario after police opened an investigation in February.

Saka was arrested on Wednesday and granted bail after being charged with fraud and a related possession charge. The newspaper said a court ordered Saka not to enter any casino.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Reuters) -The U.S. Congress on Friday released a long-classified section of the official report on the Sept. 11, attacks which discussed potential links between some of the hijackers and Saudi Arabia but said the links were not independently verified.

The 28 pages of the report on the 2002 investigation focus on potential Saudi links to the 2001 aircraft attacks on the United States, in which nearly 3,000 people died.

They were issued by the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee after years of wrangling in Washington between Congress and different administrations, Republicans and Democrats, and urging by families of those killed.

A former Navy chaplain removed from the service after disobeying an order not to wear his uniform during a protest in front of the White House 10 years ago is hoping to present his case for reinstatement to the U.S. Supreme Court when it reconvenes in the fall.

Gordon Klingenschmitt, a minister who has served as a representative for the past two years in the Colorado state legislature, said he hopes to show the high court that he did not violate a lawful order or Navy regulations with his appearance at the White House demonstration.

"Because I only said a prayer while in my uniform, and I declined to make any political speeches, and declined any interviews with the media until I changed into civilian clothes, I contend that my prayer in Jesus' name was a religious observance," Klingenschmitt said Tuesday.

In September 2006, a Navy court found then-Lt. Klingenschmitt guilty of disobeying an order by appearing in uniform at a political protest and subsequently separated him from the Navy. He said the Navy had offered to discipline him quietly with a letter of reprimand, but he insisted on a court- martial.

Klingenschmitt, through his attorneys, filed a writ of certiorari with the Supreme Court in May. It's now up to the court to review the petition and decide whether it will hear the appeal.

He said he wants the Navy's ruling overturned and, if it is, to be returned to the chaplaincy and awarded back pay.

Klingenschmitt was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 2014 but last month lost the Republican Party primary race to Bob Gardner, who previously served from 2007 to 2013 in the state legislature.

Since being separated from the Navy a decade ago, Klingenschmitt has continued to press the case that military chaplains should be allowed to use Jesus Christ's name in prayer at any time.

Additionally, his Pray In Jesus Name Project claims to have delivered five million faxed petitions to Congress in support of legislation opposing abortion, defending traditional marriage and other causes.

Responsibilities


Assist the Site Supervisor in leading the Cabling and Infrastructure Build Team in their performance of each Data Center build/retrofit project, including allocation of resources, task assignments and ensuring the quality of their installation, per design and completed on schedule.
Develop early equipment procurement recommendations and monitor timelines.
Determine all hardware and materials required to complete each build/retrofit project and work with chosen suppliers via SCO to procure.
Create Bill of Material for site requirements.
Perform installations on an as-needed basis and the example in which the Team is to perform.
Coordinate schedule and impact assessments with Operations and Construction teams.
Oversee operational activities such as Rack Moves/Adds/Changes and capacity upgrades.
Perform Quality Assurance audits to ensure DCC work meets standards.
Identify any process improvements.
Coordinating internal staff and consultant teams as required.
Provide weekly project status report (financial, schedule, quality).
Responds to operational escalations and emergencies as required.
Assist in developing network cable/rack/cabinet installation processes and standards.
Ensure installation/tests are documented in accordance with procedures.Requirements:

Experience in the design coordination and installation of structured cabling solutions and seismic support systems for large-scale Data Centers and telecommunication facilities.
Experienced in Fiber Optic troubleshooting and performance testing.

If the CIA had a crystal ball, then they would probably not be routinely blindsided by world events. Lacking such a device, the agency has endured notable analytical failures. During the early 1990s, sudden collapses of Somalia, Zaire, Rwanda, and the Soviet Union seemingly appeared without warning.

Strategic surprises have always been a problem for intelligence agencies. The material impossibility of having eyes everywhere requires making judgments without seeing a complete picture, let alone the future. Assessing the likeliness of future rare political events has had dubious reliability.

Thus, in 1994, the CIA's Directorate of Intelligence commissioned the Political Instability Task Force (PITF), formerly known as the State Failure Task Force, a clairvoyant-esque squad of social-scientist brainiacs charged with churning global political data into global instability forecasts.


The creation of the PITF began at end of the Cold War. The PITF's mission is straightforward  —  make intelligence analysis as holistic as possible, and locate where the next crisis might be, and why.

"The collapse of the Soviet Union completely caught the government off guard. Their models didn't capture that at all. [Their models] didn't even accept it," Monty Marshall, a senior consultant for the PITF and director of the Center for Systemic Peace told War Is Boring.

"The intelligence community was looking for alternative explanations," he added. "The old way of thinking, wasn't catching the new dynamics, trends, that don't fit into the way they understand things."

To meet this task, the team recruited from American academia and included leading political scientists, sociologists and methodologists. In the beginning, they focused on variables as broad as environmental degradation and social conflict. The focus later shifted to cover four main topics  —  revolutionary and ethnic civil war onset, adverse regime change, state collapse, and genocide.

PITF calculates each event's chance of occurring with probabilistic forecasts from six months to two years out, in 167 countries, which the team monitors on a daily basis. Within every country, the PITF's global model accounts for baseline political dynamics, and disruptions in patterns within these dynamics.

The results of the forecasts hold impressive heuristic accuracy. "[With] what this approach can do  —  probabilistic models  —  they're stuck at about 80 percent accuracy. That's good. That's why we're still around," Marshall said.

In addition to accurate forecasting, the PITF's reports inform the intelligence community and U.S. policymakers. According to Marshall, the PITF's reports are used mainly for the National Intelligence Council's annual intelligence estimates.

Interestingly, the relationship between military coups and civil wars are closer than previously thought. According to the PITF's data, government officials will often resort to regime change as a tactic to prevent civil war from occurring.

"A relatively strong government will try [a military coup] to avoid a conflict dynamic that would otherwise lead to civil war," Marshall said. "Sometimes they are successful at averting civil war and sometimes they are not."

"We discovered that the lead indicator was an obscure variable in the data, which we call factionalism," he added. "That is the most powerful driver in the global model, and the most powerful driver at predicting regime change."

Considering this finding regarding "factionalism"  —  or oppositional groups that are close to a nation's leader  —  could affect analysis of autocratic regimes around the world, including dangerous ones to international security such as Syria, North Korea, and Iran.

"Regime change" as a topic of forecasting is not limited to the PITF's current global model. Jay Ulfelder, former director of the PITF, currently runs a semi-yearly “Coup Forecasts” analysis with his own predictive model, quantifying the likeliness of coup attempts around the world.

"Over the past few years, most coup attempts have happened in countries in the top 30 on my risk assessments, and often in ones pretty close to the top of those lists," Ulfeder told War Is Boringvia email. "Burkina Faso was fifth with a predicted probability of about 15 percent, and Burundi was 26th with a predicted probability of about 5 percent."

Burkina Faso and Burundi experienced coup attempts in 2015. If his last forecasts, quantified in 2014, still hold probabilistic weight today, then political analysts should keep an eye on Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Equatorial-Guinea, and Niger  —  the most likely places for military coups, according to the data.

Ulfelder's focus on military coups are due to the relative accuracy in predicting them, as opposed to other types of upheaval.

"Topics like social unrest and the onset of insurgencies have turned out to be harder to forecast well," he added. "So progress has been uneven."

Despite the useful applications of the PITF, the relationship between academically inclined forecasters and government consumers has not been without problems.

The academics at PITF seek to improve their social science craft and the expand the furthering of knowledge, while their spy handlers seek quick answers  —  which the project is not fully suited to provide.

Predicting world politics "is a superficial understanding of it, but that's what the government wants," Marshall said. "They're still working hard, and they can't get it. We were looking at our understanding of how things work, whereas the intelligence community was looking for something to you know, give them the answers."

"A cheat sheet, mainly."

This misunderstanding of what predictive modeling is supposed frustrates Ulfelder as well. Trends point where to look, not what will happen.

"Most of the phenomena studied by social scientists are inherently hard to predict well," Ulfelder said. "Making a probabilistic forecast is more about trying to quantify our uncertainty than it is about presuming we can be 'right' all the time."

Furthermore, the focus of the intelligence community on data-driven forecasts has resulted in more quantitative methodologists  —  rather than more social scientists  —  being added to the PITF team. This shift, according to Marshall, has become problematic.

"The analysts can't inform the policy community if they get all of their information from the machine. They have to understand the politics that go into the machine."

Marshall maintains there should be an emphasis on the human elements of forecasting. "There are almost infinite combinations of variables to use in the model. The results are mainly noise, and to identity the signal is the job of the analyst  —  to separate that from the noise."

In this vein, the CIA pursues other, more mechanized forecast projects seeking to further automate global trend-casting. The Lockheed Martin managed Integrated Crisis Early Warning System (ICEWS) derives its abilities from "Big Data," tapping into the new availability of open source materials provided principally by the Internet.

But even Big Data methods are far from infallible.

"It's like watching a river evolve, only with geological time sped up to real time," Ulfelder noted. "So how do you design a process to turn all that information into data, and then learn things from those data, that isn't already broken as soon as you finish designing it?"

Beyond searching for work-arounds of the social science aspects of PITF, the CIA is interested in removing humans from the equation altogether. "They are furiously working away to find a mechanical way to replace me," Marshall said. "I can't blame them."

"What makes the intelligence handlers most uncomfortable is that I supply almost all the data that runs their models."

While deliberation over what directions the PITF should take will continue, both political scientists are confident in the nature of their work, and the need for more like it. The scholars even have philanthropic forecasting projects that use predictive modeling for humanitarian work.

Ulfelder is a consultant at the Center for the Prevention of Genocide, where he designs, builds, and advises on the operation and development of a public early warning system to prevent mass atrocities around the world.

The project, a first of its kind, includes a Statistical Risk world map, outlining where the world's next atrocities are likeliest to occur. Currently Sudan, Nigeria and Burma are the riskiest.

In a related function, Marshall heads the non-profit Center for Systemic Peace. The center's Global Reports outline the possibilities of reducing political violence through a systemic understanding of the world. For both this project, and the work of the PITF, Marshall believes in the practical application of both forecasting and understanding global trends.

"The overall important finding is that there is a scientific basis to human behavior and how to view human behavior, make it predictable, manageable even understandable," he said. "We can manage human behavior and we can avoid violence as an outcome."

Indeed, if the PITF's global model continues to forecast with 80 percent accuracy, then preventing negative political outcomes will remain a possibility that many  —  inside and outside of government  —  would like to pursue.

E. White’s “The Great Controversy” Attacked by SDA Church, stripped down and sold as “The Great Hope”

After President Ted Wilson was elected in 2010 during the General Conference Sessions, he pledged to distribute the bookThe Great Controversy. First called The Great Controversy Project, Ted Wilson launched this campaign by mailing 22,000 books to all surrounding postal addresses neighboring the General Conference offices.


Later, The Great Controversy Project had been expanded and President Ted Wilson pledged to distribute over 100 million copies of the book The Great Controversy world wide.





On these two occasions we praised the work of bringing this book and its message before the people. We give President Ted Wilson credit for being on target with his efforts in doing some “real evangelism” and not engaging in the so-called “evangelical/ecumenical” gospel that has been sweeping Adventism for over 50 years.”





In 2010 we were encouraged to see how the truth was going to be shared in the book The Great Controversy. However, today the name of the project has been changed from The Great Controversy Project to “The Great Hope.” But that is not the issue. The book [pamphlet] that is now being distributed is an insufficient, poor, condensed, diluted version of the landmark book The Great Controversy. Missing from this new version are all the distinctive, end-time, testing truth messages for this time.

Published by both Seventh-day Adventist denominational presses, Pacific Press and Review and Herald Publishing Association,The Great Hope lists as its author “E. G. White.” But would the prophet support an “adapted version” of her classical book The Great Controversy that does not include:


(1) the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary message, (2) the second angel’s call to come out of Babylon, (3) the third angel’s message exposing Sunday as the Mark of the Beast, (4) 1844 as the hour of God’s judgment [part of the first angel’s message], (5) the investigative judgment [part of the first angel’s message], (6) the identification of who and what is Babylon, the harlot woman, and her daughters, (7) the identification of the beast of Revelation 13 and 17, (8) the little horn who persecuted the true church from 538-1798 and will be the chief instigator in these last days (9) Luther and all the reformers and their trials and persecution which will again be repeated, (10) the rise of the Advent awakening of the 1840s culminating in formation of the Remnant church and the seed of the woman, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus.


Notice what the prophet wrote: “I am more anxious to see a wide circulation for this book than for any others I have written; for in The Great Controversy, the last message of warning to the world is given more distinctly than in any of my other books.” Publishing Ministry, 358.


Yet this is not the case with the book The Great Hope. This book doesn’t give the “warning to the world” distinctly. Have Seventh-day Adventist leaders become cunning and crafty in their approach nowadays? They have not only renamed The Great Controversy with another title, The Great Hope, but they have obliterated the teachings of Ellen G. White. Have church leaders done this so as to give the impression that they are preaching the three angels’ messages while appeasing the conscience of the conservative brethren within the church – and yet at the same time raise millions of dollars from unsuspecting church members? Could the purpose of this huge expenditure of money be to convince you that the church is actually evangelizing the world with the end-time, testing truth messages of Revelation 14?


Even though the pamphlet, The Great Hope, does tell the readers about the Seventh-day Sabbath, the non-immortality of the soul, and the second coming of Christ in very mild tones; yet, it lacks the power, strength, and conviction in which Ellen White’s original book accurately conveys and delivers. The Great Hope, with 11 chapters and under 100 pages, was prepared for the modern reader who doesn’t have time to read. The Great Hope can be read in one hour because it is so generic and hurried that it basically scratches the surface of truth without digging deep into the issues of the end time. It fails to give you context and perspective as to why these truths are significant and relevant for this time of world-wide apostasy. Like we mentioned before, it doesn’t explain the issue of the final test between the mark of the beast and the seal of God.


False Advertisement?


When President Ted Wilson began promoting this project through satellite broadcasts to the millions of church members, his sales pitch was to promote the book “The Great Controversy.” He never mentioned printing hundreds of millions of copies of a condensed, 11 chapter abridged version to be distributed to the masses—but this is where we are today. According to the North American Division of SDAs website [www.sharethegreathope.com] the plan is now to distribute 170 million copies of the so-called “The Great Hope. The NAD’s website claims that this book will “Shake the world!”


There is absolutely little different between reading this book and reading a redacted New International Version Bible as opposed to a more authentic King James Version.


My brethren, the only ones who should be “shaken” by this project should be our Adventist people. We need to be shaken out of our Laodicean condition and realize what is really happening! The church is actively promoting and selling millions of books that don’t teach the basic themes The Great Controversy—the history of Christianity, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, or even the origins and historical teaching/end-time truths of Seventh-day Adventists. The Great Hope leaves you hopeless and clueless as to the reality of the future prophetic events and their fulfillments. It doesn’t even mention the book of Daniel and barely touches on Revelation. The Great Hope doesn’t fulfill Ellen White’s desire to see her book widely circulated as described in Publishing Ministry p. 358 by giving: “the last message of warning to the world…more distinctly.”


Rather, this new version of “The Great Controversy” actually fulfills one of her predictions found in the original version of The Great Controversy. Notice this amazing prediction:


“The clergy will put forth almost superhuman efforts to shut away the light lest it should shine upon their flocks. By every means at their command they will endeavor to suppress the discussion of these vital questions.” Great Controversy, p. 607.


This is exactly what Ted Wilson and the other leaders have actually been. They publicly advertised the promotion of the three angels’ messages through the book The Great Controversy, but in actuality, they are promoting a pamphlet that has been reduced to almost nothing. Could this be false advertisement? Will dissatisfied church members get their money back? Have people who have given large funds for this project been misled? Is this a scam or a rip-off? Friends, how can we play around with the most solemn truth ever entrusted to mortal men? We are living in serious times and people need to know how to prepare for what is about to take the world by storm: “We have a most important work to do,—the work of proclaiming the third angel’s message. We are facing the most important issues that men have ever been called to meet. All should understand the truths contained in the three messages; for they are essential to salvation.” Counsels to Writers and Editors, p. 175.

It would serve race mongers well to consider that even a docile old dog will bite you if you mistreat it often enough and long enough.  Tangential to same is the reality of the “laws of unintended consequences.”

I’m tired of seeing, reading, and hearing white people blamed for everything from black boys not being able to read to whites being privileged because of the color of their skin. If I am tired of these Americans being used as scapegoats to further the agenda of race mongers, then it is a sure bet that those being unjustly vilified are especially weary of same.

This isn’t 1860 and it certainly isn’t 1955. There are no slaves in America and there are no Jim Crow laws dictating access based on skin color. Specific to that point it is time to remind people like Obama, Al Sharpton, and the New Black Panther Party that the racial discord they are fomenting can become the harbinger of their own peril.

Obama foments racial unrest and a racial divide to further his neo-Leninist agenda. Sharpton foments racial unrest for personal gain. The New Black Panther Party foments racial hostilities and the demonization of whites in the foolish belief they can bring about a Western version of apartheid where blacks rule.

Too many blacks have lost sight of the fact that it was Africans who were responsible for the enslavement of other Africans. It was war, invasion, conquest, and various caste systems that contributed to slavery. And although one would be hard-pressed to believe it from the invented myths that masquerade as fact, persons of color were not the only slaves.

From Genesis to the Sudan of today, slavery has been a staple around the world. And it should be noted that given the first opportunity in America, the former slaves of color became owners of those whose skin color matched theirs.

But unlike the rest of the world, America had the good sense and decency to end slavery. In America, there is no caste system, and yet at every turn we are bombarded with how bad blacks have it because of whites and how unfair the so-called “white system” is to blacks.

All people, including those who are here illegally, have it better in America than they would have it anywhere else on earth. And yet blacks are encouraged to blame their ills on whites.

Therein the “laws of unintended consequences” come into play. America has shed the blood of her people on her own soil to ensure the freedom of all Americans. Americans joined hands with blacks to end Jim Crow. And, to the detriment of all concerned, political correctness and guilt have contributed to discrimination against whites vis-a`-vis race-based affirmative action initiatives.

Still the bastardization of whites continues. White law enforcement personnel are labeled racist for defending themselves against black criminals, especially when bad things happen to the black criminals.

To put it succinctly, the single greatest non-biblical truth today is that many times the majority of blacks are their own worst enemies. Many blacks go through life with a chip on their shoulder and bad attitudes toward whites. Many blacks growing up in dysfunctional single parent or no parent homes are loathe to realize that their lives are the result of bad decisions made by their families that adversely affect their adulthood – its not the white man.

But as I said, there is a thing called “the laws of unintended consequences.” To that end, sooner or later a pendulum reaches its arc and starts to swing back in the other direction.

How long before white people, many of whom are growing increasingly resentful at being falsely maligned, decide to respond in kind? How much longer will whites stand by and allow the likes of Sharpton and Obama to continually cast them as racist villains?

If the 1915 silent movie, The Birth of a Nation by D.W. Griffith, which depicted blacks as unintelligent and sexual predators of white women, (which was a lie) gave rise to the resurrection of the Ku Klux Klan, what can we expect to be brought about by the heathen behavior of many blacks today?

Many blacks are quick to attack those of us who condemn the untoward, barbaric behavior of some blacks. They curse us for not glossing over their behavior and for not engaging in “blame whitey.” But if a phony movie was able to give rise to at least two generations of condemnation of blacks, what will the in-your-face belligerent hostilities so many of them exhibit today ultimately result in?

America has figuratively bent over backward to assuage its perceived guilt but for many blacks that is not good enough. They accuse and self-alienate but do nothing to incorporate the greatness of America into their lives.

How much longer will America allow blacks to vilify those who have done them no harm – even as blacks attack, terrorize, and condemn those who truly do just want to get along?

The reports are as yet unconfirmed but video footage from the scene showed what appeared to be a large fire and crowds of people fleeing the scene.

But demographic changes over the last few decades have transformed the country. As recently as 2008, white Christians made up the majority of the American population. Six years later, the number had dropped seven points to 47 percent. A religious scholar tracks these changes in a new book.
