RUMSFELD'S DISEASE

From the June 2004 Idaho Observer:

Power politics trumped public health in aspartame approval process

Special note to our readers: If you subscribe to The Idaho Observer, you already know how bad it is out there. There is no reason to continue filling our pages with new examples of how badly we are being betrayed by our allegedly elected leaders and those they hire to enforce their horrible policies unless we also indicate productive avenues for activism that could reverse what is happening. Below is an overview of aspartame -- a neurotoxic drug that is found in some 7,000 commonly consumed products in America. All of us are affected by aspartame: We are either suffering its toxic affects ourselves or know people whose bodies are falling apart due to their chronic consumption of this government-approved poison.

Our window for alerting our countrymen to the dangers of aspartame is wide open right now because most Americans are disgusted with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld for his leadership in Iraq. Donald Rumsfeld can also be credited for poisoning America (and the rest of the world) with aspartame. If we prove to our family members, friends and neighbors how Rumsfeld knowingly and willingly poisoned his own people, how much wider will their minds open to other important issues?

Poisoned people cannot resist tyranny. That is why we published The Artificially Sweetened Times. It is a perverse bonus that the object of our angst, Rumsfeld, is extremely vulnerable right now. We are asking you, our readers, to help us use Rumsfeld to expose aspartame as a means to further awaken our countrymen's awareness to our collective national peril.

Though the following disease-naming game may seem silly, think again: For a quarter century current Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has been using his political influence to establish policies that have exposed millions of innocent people, even his own people, to deathly toxic substances. Rumsfeld played a key role in the swine flu mass vaccination fiasco in 1973 and supports Bush administration plans to mass vaccinate every man, woman and child in America with smallpox. Rather than being imprisoned for his crimes against humanity, Rumsfeld holds one of the most influential offices in U.S. government.

A growing body of researchers, physicians and laypeople believe artificial sweetener is an underlying cause of epidemic chronic illness nationwide.

Is aspartame a harmless synthetic sweetener or is it a government-approved poison? The evidence, as found in credible scientific research and in the bodies of thousands, perhaps millions of chronically unhealthy people worldwide, indicates that the latter is true: Aspartame is, indeed, a government-approved poison.

Former G.D. Searle CEO Donald Rumsfeld used his political muscle to achieve limited government approval for artificial sweetener aspartame in 1981. Since that time, approval for this extremely addictive, neurotoxic drug has expanded and can be found in an estimated 7,000 commonly consumed foods, beverages and medications.

Adverse reactions to aspartame comprise approximately 80 percent of consumer complaints received by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA has published a list of 92 symptoms of aspartame poisoning, which include asthma, brain cancer, sexual dysfunction, irritability, seizures, vision problems, weight gain, chronic fatigue and death. Regardless of its toxic consequences to consumers, the numbers of foods, beverages and medications containing aspartame increase each year.

A growing body of scientists, doctors and lay people insist aspartame disease is an ignored epidemic and an underlying cause of chronic ill-health in America. Conversely, aspartame producers such as Monsanto subsidiary J.W. Childs, industry advocates such as the Calorie Control Council, government regulators in the FDA and some scientists and physicians claim aspartame is safe and its worst characteristic is that it's non-nutritive.

The evidence is exhaustively documented in “Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic” by H.J. Roberts, MD. Dr. Roberts' work is supported by internationally renowned neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, MD. It is also found in numerous government, industry and independently conducted reports available from the Mission Possible website at http://www.dorway.com/.

Rumsfeld unleashes weapon of mass misery

Aspartame was accidentally discovered by G.D. Searle chemist James Schlatter in spring, 1965, while he was working on an ulcer drug. Noting that the substance was 180 times sweeter than sugar by weight, in fall, 1967, Searle began conducting safety tests in preparation for petitioning the FDA for approval of aspartame as a food additive. In one of them, Dr. Harold Weisman, a biochemist at the University of Wisconsin, tested the safety of aspartame on seven infant monkeys. Of the seven monkeys fed aspartame with milk, one died and five began having grand mal seizures.

Subsequent studies also found aspartame to be unsafe as a sugar substitute. Neuroscientist John Olney demonstrated that aspartic acid caused brain tumors in mice.

Undaunted by serious health concerns revealed in its “safety” studies, Searle petitioned the FDA for aspartame approval in February, 1973.

By 1976 Searle's campaign to achieve FDA approval for aspartame was mired in controversy. Amid objections and protests from consumer advocate attorney Jim Turner and Dr. Olney, the FDA launched an investigation into Searle's laboratory practices.

The FDA investigation determined that Searle's lab practices were shoddy and produced inaccurate results by manipulating data. The subsequent FDA report triggered a grand jury investigation into Searle's attempts to defraud the FDA. The investigation was led by U.S. Attorney Samuel Skinner. Six months after the grand jury was convened, Skinner gave up his job with the Department of Justice to take a position at Searle's law firm Sidley & Austin. The statute of limitations ran out and the grand jury investigation was dropped.

By March, 1977, Searle had hired former Illinois congressman and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as its CEO. According to former Searle sales rep Patty Wood-Allott. Before a Senate committee discussing proposed labeling requirements for products containing aspartame in 1987, former Searle sales rep Patty Wood-Allott testified under oath that Rumsfeld circulated a telling memo among the company's sales staff in 1981. In the memo, Rumsfeld reportedly stated that, if necessary, “.he would call in all of his markers and that, no matter what, he would see to it that aspartame would be approved that year.”

True to his word, aspartame was approved for use in dry food products July 15, 1981.

How aspartame damages the body

All of aspartame's components and metabolites are toxic to humans.

Aspartame is 50 percent phenylalanine, 40 percent aspartic acid and 10 percent methanol. Phenylanine is an amino acid produced in the body. Synthetic phenylalanine from aspartame can cross the blood/brain barrier, severely imbalancing brain chemistry in a way that decreases serotonin levels, which leads to the development of emotional disorders.

Aspartic acid (also an amino acid) is a neurotransmitter produced in the body to facilitate the transfer of information from neuron to neuron. Consumption of aspartame creates an excess of synthetic aspartic acid capable of damaging or killing neurons by overstimulating them.

Significant numbers of people who consume aspartame develop a variety of neurological disorders commonly diagnosed as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Lou Gehrig's disease. Aspartame users often experience memory loss, sexual dysfunction, blindness, heart irregularities, headaches, hearing loss, seizures, blood sugar imbalances, irritability and varying degrees of dementia.

Methanol is a well-known neurotoxin. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes it as a “cumulative” poison. The symptoms of methanol poisoning include headaches, dizziness, nausea, digestive problems, weakness, vertigo, tinnitus, vision problems and blindness, memory lapses, numbness, behavioral problems and neuritis.

The EPA also describes how “methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic.”

Formaldehyde, the active ingredient in embalming fluid, is a known carcinogen that interferes with DNA and causes birth defects.

Another byproduct of metabolized aspartame is diketopiperazine (DKP). DKP has been associated with the development of brain tumors and has been found to form on its own in aspartame-containing beverages stored above 86 degrees F.

Naturally, populations most vulnerable to neurological complications from aspartame are infants and young children, pregnant women, the elderly and those suffering from chronic illnesses. Additionally, according to Dr. Roberts, “Aspartame destroys diabetics.”

Deadly deceptions

FDA labeling laws have been amended so that lists of ingredients may not indicate “aspartame” specifically. Some labels just state, “contains phenylalanine.” Other labels may list “flavors,” “natural flavors” or “artificial flavors” which could indicate the otherwise unstated presence of aspartame.

Monsanto recently received product approval for “Neotame.” An artificial sweetener nearly identical to aspartame with the addition of EPA-listed most hazardous chemical 3-dimethylbutyl, Neotame is reportedly 13,000 times sweeter than sugar by weight. It is reported that the FDA does not require Neotame to be specifically identified on product labels because the amount needed to sweeten a product, by percentage, falls beneath labeling requirements or may also be identified as one of the product's “natural flavors.”

What is safe and sweet?

Regardless of what the “experts” say, common sense tells us that products comprised entirely of toxic substances and which break down into other toxic substances during every phase of its journey through the body, is not fit for human consumption. But, we love sweet things and most of us cannot avoid sweetened foods. So, common sense also tells us we should avoid unhealthy sweet synthetic toxins by replacing them with sweeteners that have historically been proven safe for humans.

See the “Healthy Sweetener Use Guide” at the bottom of this page for a list of sweeteners that you should consider using or not using.

Proactivism

Nearly everyone in America is being impacted by aspartame: Either they are themselves suffering from “Rumsfeld's disease type A” or are close to someone whose health is deteriorating due to their addiction to aspartame-containing products. It is easy to see if aspartame is causing health problems because many people experience the disappearance of symptoms once they remove aspartame from their diets.

The Idaho Observer, in cooperation with Mission Possible, has produced a 24-page booklet exploring this important public health issue. The Artificially Sweetened Times is the most concise, compelling and cost-effective means of alerting our nation to the epidemic nature of Rumsfeld's disease type A (see ad page 24).

Copies of The Artificially Sweetened Times are available for $35 per 100 -- shipping included. Circulate this publication among friends, family and throughout your community. The future of America could very well depend upon the removal of aspartame (and now Neotame) from our food supply. An online version is available for free at http://www.vaclib.org/news/astimes.htm.

Rumsfeld's disease types A-DU

Type A

The spectrum of chronic disorders linked to aspartame have been generically labeled “aspartame disease.” This disease has become so pervasive it deserves a new name. Since Donald Rumsfeld was willing to “call in all of his markers” to make sure Americans would be exposed to this brain-damaging, body-ravaging artificial sweetener, it seems fitting that we honor the current secretary of defense by naming a disease after him: “Rumsfeld's disease type A.”

Type B

But we need not stop at the letter “A.” Since Rumsfeld arranged for biological weapons to be sold to Iraq for use against the Kurds during the 80s, biologically-induced diseases could be named “Rumsfeld's disease type B.

Type C

Rumsfeld also arranged for chemical weapons to be used in various locations throughout the world. Chemically-induced diseases could be named Rumsfeld's disease type C.

Type DU

As secretary of defense, Rumsfeld has been responsible for making sure that friendly, enemy and civilian personnel are exposed to radiation from exploded munitions coated in depleted uranium. DU-related symptoms could be named Rumsfeld's disease type DU.

And the list could go on: E for environmental, for instance. The point is that we have the tool ( The Artificially Sweetened Times), and the network to distribute the tool (each other). If we all did our part, it could be common knowledge in short order what a monster Rumsfeld really is and, perhaps, he could be led away in chains and his poisons removed from the world's food supply.
