WINNIPEG - Court documents show a total of 23 children have been taken into the care of the province from a Manitoba Mennonite community where adults have been charged with abuse.

The documents show the youngest child is nine months old while the oldest is 15.

Documents from Child and Family Services quote one 13-year-old boy as saying he "does not want to return home."

Four adults from the orthodox community have been charged with assaulting children using cattle prods and leather straps between July 2011 and January of this year.

RCMP are still investigating and say more charges could be laid.

The identities of the children are protected under a publication ban.
