Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who grew up in poverty in Detroit before eventually going on to become a world-renowned doctor, says he hopes “inspiration” is a part of his 2016 presidential candidacy.

Asked by Fox News’ John Roberts if he sees himself as an “inspirational candidate,” Mr. Carson said: “I would hope that inspiration would be a part of it.”

“You know, we have to heal the country, we have to inspire the country as well, and we have to revive the country,”
Mr. Carson said. “You know, we’re on our deathbed.”

Mr. Carson was tied with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush atop a new Fox News poll on the 2016 GOP field.

“It tells you that people are waking up and starting to think for themselves,” he said. “And that is an incredible thing when you stop and think about it, because we’ve been conditioned to listen to the political parties, to listen to the pundits, and they tell you who you’re supposed to like.”
