BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson spoke to a large crowd in Birmingham on Sunday night.

Carson served as the keynote speaker at Briarwood Presbyterian Church's annual program honoring active service members and veterans. The crowd was so large many were forced to watch the program on monitors in other parts of the church.

Those in the audience who have served our country were asked to stand and be recognized for their sacrifices. Carson said life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is something that shouldn't be taken for granted.

"When I think about our founders, they fought and all those patriots, they fought and died so that we can have freedom of speech and freedom of expression," Carson said. "And I think they would turn over in their grave if they saw us kowtowing to the PC police. People telling us what we can say and what we can't say. And what we can do and how we have to live. And what we can eat and where we can go. Give me a break, this is America."

Carson is known for speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast in 2013. He also served as speaker in 1997.
