In a CNN interview Thursday, Republican presidential hopeful Dr. Ben Carson said that the tragedy of the Holocaust could have been avoided, or its magnitude greatly minimized, had the Jews of Europe been armed. And Carson's views on gun control, laid out in his book A More ideal Union, bubbled to the surface again on Thursday during an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, where he suggested that the outcome of the Holocaust would have been different if Jews had guns. I'm telling you that there is a reason that these dictatorial people take the guns first.

The surprising pronouncement raised new questions about Carson's seriousness as a presidential contender and comes on the heels of a number of other widely derided claims he has made since the shooting.

Carson has criticised the news media for taking his comments out of context, but he has not backed down from the basic positions. The Republican presidential candidate revealed on October. 7 that he believes Hitler may not have been able to accomplish his goals of wiping out the Jewish community if there were looser gun control laws in Nazi Germany.

The Nazi gun control theory is a popular one among 2nd Amendment enthusiasts in the United States and is commonly considered a strategy to win emotional support by appropriating the communal history of the Jews. On The View, he explained that they'd need to be trained in "diversionary tactics" too. During an appearance on The View, Carson suggested that the best way to prevent shootings in schools would be to arm teachers.

The Holocaust comment was only the latest of Carson's recent statements on firearms. "You've got a insane person who's shooting people and is clearly going to continue to do that versus somebody who's coming in to try to get a little bit of cash", Carson said.

Carson: I understand that.

"Not only would I probably not cooperate with him [the shooter], I would not just stand there and let him shoot me".

'I would say "Hey guys, everybody attack him".

The retired neurosurgeon said he purposely brought up Hitler because 'I knew the left wing would go insane, ' he said.
