Three Out of Four Jesuit-Educated Congressmen Vote for Abortion

WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) - Jesuit-formed alumni make up 10 percent of the U.S. Congress — and the majority of them have voted pro-abortion.

The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) is boasting that graduates of their Catholic-founded institutions comprise 10 percent of the 535 members of the 115th U.S. Congress. One day after Congress was sworn into office on January 3, the AJCU announced that 56 of their alumni were members of either the U.S. Senate or U.S. House of Representatives.

A review of these legislators' voting records show that 80 percent of them had voted for legislation favoring abortion. Out of the 12 Jesuit-educated senators, only two had consistently voted pro-life. Out of the 44 Jesuit alumni recently elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, only 12 had continuously voted for pro-life legislation.

It's being widely reported that the number of Catholics in U.S. Congress is at all-time high. Thirty-one percent of the 115th Congress is Catholic. The majority of these Catholics, however, are members of the pro-abortion Democratic Party.

Of the 144 congressmen that profess to be Catholic in the U.S. House of Representatives, 74 belong to the Democratic Party, while only 70 are members of the Republican Party. Of 24 senators who claim Catholic affiliation, 15 are Democrats and nine are Republicans.

The number of U.S. legislators coming from Jesuit colleges has likewise increased. In last week's announcement, AJCU noted their alumni participation in Congress had grown from 50 seats in the 114th U.S. Congress to 56 seats this year.

These lawmakers have been formed at one of 13 Jesuit institutions. Georgetown University formed the most alumni, having educated 28 of these politicians. Former president Bill Clinton, an ardent advocate of abortion, is a product of this university.

AJCU celebrated the fact that not only Jesuit colleges but also Jesuit high schools were to be congratulated for forming political leaders in this country like Catholic senator Tim Kaine:

In addition to the 56 alumni/ae from Jesuit colleges and universities who are serving in the 115th Congress, there are many alumni/ae of Jesuit high schools in office. Of note, Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), the 2016 Democrat candidate for vice president of the United States, is a graduate of Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, MO.

Self-styled Catholic Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton's running mate, is also known for his support of gay "marriage," abortion and transgender ideology. He often brings up the influence that radical Jesuit missionaries from South America had on him when he visited the continent in his youth.

Father Michael J. Sheeran, S.J., president of AJCU, believes Jesuit educators should be proud of their involvement in forming these politicians. "A hallmark of Jesuit education is service to others, and we are proud to see that commitment represented by the alumni of Jesuit institutions who serve in the House and Senate," he said. "We appreciate their leadership and look forward to working with them during the 115th Congress."

Some Catholics, however, don't share this viewpoint. As one seasoned bloggernotes, "Those who defend and promote the abhorrent evil of abortion are not deserving of praise for 'leadership' nor of 'service to others.' One would think that the rejection of fundamental Catholic teachings on the dignity of life by alumni might cause Jesuits to reconsider how they’re educating their students."
