ISN AFFIRMS PASSAGE OF THE DREAM AND PROMISE ACT IN THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The Ignatian Solidarity Network joins faith partners, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and NETWORK Catholic Social Justice Lobby, in affirming the U.S. House of Representatives passage of the Dream and Promise Act (HR 6) this week.

“The passage of the the Dream and Promise Act (HR 6) in the U.S. House of Representatives this week provides hope to those who are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, as well as individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) status. We continue to join the voices of these individuals in their efforts to advocate for the day when they can contribute fully to the country they love and know to be their home through protection from deportation and a pathway to citizenship. Their contributions to our Ignatian network, their communities, and our nation as a whole must be valued. We are hopeful that the U.S. Senate will take up this legislation and provide further hope to those who are part of the DACA program, as well as individuals with TPS and Deferred Enforced Departure status.” -ISN Statement Regarding the Dream and Promise Act (HR 6)

In recent weeks, Ignatian Solidarity Network joined with the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and Jesuit Conference Office of Justice and Ecology in mobilizing advocates from Jesuit institutions and the broader Ignatian network to contact U.S. House members to call for the passage of HR 6. In total, over 235 U.S. House offices were contacted by these advocates.

Interfaith Immigration Coalition members joined DACA-related legislation advocates at a rally on Capitol Hill in January of 2018.

Beyond the Ignatian network, Catholic leaders shared the following:

“This is a big step for Dreamers and TPS holders who have called the United States home but have been working and living in uncertainty for years.” said Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Migration. “Dreamers, TPS and DED holders are working to make our communities and parishes strong and are vital contributors to our country. We welcome today’s vote and urge the Senate to take up this legislation which gives permanent protection to Dreamers, TPS and DED holders.”

“Today is an historic step for Dreamers, TPS holders, and DED recipients. While the struggle for comprehensive immigration reform goes on, we need to protect immigrants from President Trump’s attacks now,” said Sr. Simone Campbell, S.S.S., Executive Director of NETWORK Catholic Social Justice Lobby. “That’s why the Catholic Sisters and activists of NETWORK were so proud to support the passage of the American Dream and Promise Act in the House. The Senate must quickly follow suit to provide a pathway to citizenship and protection from deportation for our immigrant sisters and brothers. These are valued community members with inherent dignity who must be protected.”
