October 4 meeting at the Vatican “Faith and Science: Towards COP 26”

On the day the Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, one year after the publication of Pope Francis’ encyclical “Fratelli Totti”, the meeting “Faith and Science: Towards COP 26” is held in the Vatican.

October 4 at the Vatican will take place at the “Faith and Science: Towards COP26” meeting, the United Nations climate conference that will bring together religious leaders and scholars around an appeal to COP26 participants, in the program from October 31 to November 12 in Glasgow, Scotland. COP26 will be organized by and implemented by Great Britain in cooperation with Italy before the Holy See. It has been developed through monthly virtual meetings since the beginning of this year, where religious leaders and scholars have been able to share their concerns and desires for greater responsibility for the planet and needed change.

This participation led to a joint appeal to be signed by religious leaders during their meeting in the Vatican on the morning of 4 October, during which Pope Francis will deliver the appeal to The Honorable Alok Kumar Sharma, President-designate COP26, and The Honorable Luigi Di Maio, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy. In the afternoon, a closed session will be held at the Italian Embassy to the Holy See.

The October 4 program includes, among other things, the initial reading of some passages from the religious leaders’ call to COP26. Then the religious leaders sign the appeal. After a moment of prayer and greetings from the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Pope Francis will speak at the meeting. In the afternoon – as the Holy See Press Office reports – a closed session will be held at the Italian Embassy to the Holy See.
