HANDCUFFS MAY HAVE STRANGLED IRATE FLIER
Carol Anne Gotbaum, a 45-year-old mother of three, was detained after she became irate when she missed her flight at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, a spokesman for US Airways said.
After she was handcuffed and put into a holding cell, authorities said she screamed for 10 minutes and then abruptly stopped. When officers checked on her to determine why she had become quiet, they found her unresponsive.
It now appears she may have gotten tangled up with her handcuffs around her neck when while trying to escape, a Phoenix police spokesman said.
Police also said no Taser or pepper spray was used on Gotbaum, whose cause of death will be determined by the Maricopa County medical examiner.

SENATE PASSES HATE CRIME BILL
Senate adds hate-crime measure to war bill
September 28, 2007
Supporters of the hate-crime legislation mustered the minimum 60 votes they needed to overcome a threatened filibuster. The House approved the bill earlier this year as a stand-alone measure, but neither chamber appears to have the votes to override a veto.
"We have never had this bill with the potential to go as far as it is," said Sen. Gordon H. Smith (R-Ore.), one of the chief sponsors, who pleaded for the president to sign it as a "legacy that he can claim on an important civil rights issue."
Smith stood on the Senate floor next to a photo of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was brutally beaten in Wyoming in 1998 and left to die tied to a fence. The bill is named for Shepard. "What happened to Matthew should happen to no one," Smith said.
In the first major expansion of the hate-crime statute passed in 1968, the legislation would cover acts of violence motivated by a victim's sexual orientation, gender, disability or gender identity. Existing federal law defines hate crimes as those motivated by bias based on religion, race, national origin or color.
The measure, which was also drawn up in response to the 1999 shooting attack by white supremacist Buford O. Furrow on a Jewish community center in the San Fernando Valley, gives federal authorities more leeway to assist state and local law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting hate crimes.
Passage of the bill caps a nearly decade-long struggle. Though the House and Senate have previously approved hate-crime measures, they never reached the president's desk when Republicans controlled Congress. Smith, who has championed the measure with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), has entered a hate crime into the Senate record almost every day for the last seven years.
The bill's supporters said they hoped the hate-crime legislation would be included in a final defense bill that must be pieced together to settle House-Senate differences. Kennedy noted that no president has ever vetoed a defense authorization bill. "We're very hopeful that the president will sign it," he said.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) is "committed to doing all she can to make sure the bill is enacted," said Brendan Daly, her spokesman.
The White House offered no sign that the president would back down from his veto threat. "We believe that state and local law enforcement agencies are effectively using their laws to the full extent that they can" to cover hate crimes, spokeswoman Dana Perino said.
Gay rights groups applauded the vote. "The new leadership in Congress fully understands that for too long our community has been terrorized by hate violence," said Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign.
Opponents said the bill would needlessly create special classes of victims.
"All crimes of violence are crimes of hate," Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) contended that the hate-crime provision jeopardized a bill that would provide armored vehicles and pay raises for the troops.
"When I go to Iraq, I don't have a lot of people coming up to me and saying we need to pass the hate-crimes bill," he said. "They do need better body armor."
But supporters of the hate-crime legislation defended its inclusion in the defense bill. Smith displayed a photo of a gay sailor, Allen Schindler, killed in 1992 who was so severely beaten that Smith said "his own mother could not identify him but for the remains of a tattoo on his arm."
Some religious groups have assailed the measure as "thought crimes" legislation, warning it could lead to the prosecution of pastors delivering sermons against homosexuality.
Smith responded, "There is nothing in this law that prevents you from saying and thinking anything. . . . But if you think it, you speak it and you act on it, you come under the jurisdiction of local, state and, I hope, federal hate-crimes laws."
Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino, said the measure would provide an "extra weapon in our arsenal against violent hate crime in California," especially in helping smaller jurisdictions with limited resources to investigate and prosecute hate crimes.
Nine Republicans joined all of the Democrats and both independents, voting 60 to 39 to take up the hate-crime measure. All the no votes were cast by Republicans. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) did not vote. The amendment then passed on a voice vote.

MORE PASSPORT STIPULATIONS
A press release from the office of U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman:
ST. PAUL--U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman last week issued an update to Minnesotans that U.S. citizens will be required to have a passport to travel by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean as of October 1, 2007.
Travelers who depart the U.S. prior to that date will still be permitted to return with the passport application receipt. Anyone departing by air from the U.S. after that date will be required to carry a valid passport.
Earlier this year, Coleman worked closely with the State Department to address the concerns stemming from an unprecedented backlog in passport applications that overwhelmed processing centers after the air travel phase Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) took effect in January.
To date, Coleman’s constituent service staff has assisted more than 3,000 Minnesotans facing uncertainty, potential loss of money and important family time as a result of delays in their passport applications over recent months.
State Department officials have briefed Coleman and other legislators to announce that they now have the capacity to process passports on a more timely basis. Coleman will continue to monitor the situation and encourages any Minnesotans facing delays to contact his office.
During the crunch in passport applications, Coleman met with the top State Department official in charge of the passport process and pressed for quick action to address the massive backlog. He also held a meeting with the Treasury Department, which is in charge of passport payments, and had been similarly delayed in their processing. In June, the U.S Departments of State and Homeland Security announced a temporary suspension through September 30, 2007, of the passport requirement for U.S. citizens traveling by air to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean with government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport.
Coleman has also introduced legislation to ensure that this problem does not recur when passports or new passport cards become necessary for travel by land or sea, which could take effect as early as summer 2008. The Western Hemisphere Traveler Improvement Act requires the Secretary of State to certify capacity to process passports within eight weeks before moving ahead with the land phase of WHTI. In June, the departments announced a phased-in approach to the 2008 deadline, to permit a birth certificate for children and a driver’s license and birth certificate for adults beginning in January 2008 until a determination is made to require alternative documentation for land a sea travel only. Children will not be required to obtain passports under the Administration’s proposal. Legislation pending in Congress would not allow this transition to occur until June 2009.

EX-BISHOP RUNS FOR PRESIDENT IN PARAGUAY
Paraguayan ex-bishop's coalition splinters ahead of 2008 election
ASUNCION, Paraguay: A former Roman Catholic bishop running for president of Paraguay said Tuesday his opposition coalition has split over a dispute with factions allied with a former coup plotter.
Fernando Lugo, who is seeking to end six decades of one-party rule in the April 2008 election, said the 10-party National Unity coalition that backed him earlier this year has broken up.
He said he is in talks to form a new coalition, the Patriotic Alliance for Change, that would include seven of the parties but exclude backers of former Gen. Lino Oviedo.
Oviedo was paroled this month after serving about half of a 10-year prison term on charges of trying to overthrow the government in 1996. He says he was unjustly convicted and has hinted strongly at a run for the presidency.
Calling the former general "a figure from the past," Lugo told reporters that "we need to look to the future with optimism, because the country is in need of profound and urgent change."
President Nicanor Duarte, whose term ends next August, has argued that the military court that convicted Oviedo in 1998 stripped him of the right to run for office. He says only the Supreme Court could restore Oviedo's eligibility, an issue the court hasn't addressed.
Duarte himself is constitutionally barred from seeking immediate re-election, and several rivals are jockeying for the long-ruling Colorado party nomination.
Meanwhile, Duarte has so far failed to make good on threats to challenge Lugo's candidacy. Paraguay's constitution prohibits members of the clergy from seeking office, although Lugo says he resigned.

CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES WEIGHING GOP
Christian Conservatives Weigh Abandoning GOP
Leaders Balk at Supporting Pro-Abortion Presidential Candidate, Consider Third Party '08 Run
Sept. 30, 2007
The meeting took place during a weekend convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, of the highly secretive Council for National Policy, an invitation-only organization of conservative leaders, founded in 1981, though participants in the presidential discussion said the smaller gathering was not an official CNP event.
Those at the smaller meeting included James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, and Richard Viguerie, a direct mail pioneer, who recently authored "Conservatives Betrayed: How George W. Bush and Other Big Government Republicans Hijacked the Republican Base."
Viguerie told ABC News that the meeting was attended by "nationally known conservative leaders, and we took a very strong stand against supporting any pro-abortion candidate.
"Giuliani is beyond the pale," Viguerie said. "It's just not going to happen. There's no way that conservative leaders are going to support a pro-abortion candidate. It was unanimous."
Sentiment among his fellow "value voter conservatives" was so strong, Viguerie said, there was "overwhelming support to consider that idea" of a third-party presidential candidate, in the event Giuliani wins the Republican presidential nomination.
Such a move is not a "done deed," he said, but he described how he'd been angry at the Republican party for six years, "and in the last six months, I've seen a vast majority of my colleagues, at the national level, move in that direction, including a willingness to go third-party. They're even further along on the third-party idea than I am."
Gary Bauer, who participated in the smaller discussion by phone, issued a statement Sunday evening, urging his friends to "be cautious," since he couldn't "think of a bigger disaster for social conservatives, defense conservatives and economic conservatives, than Hillary Clinton in the White House."
JOHN FRANCIS HYLAN
"The real menace of our Republic is the invisible government which like
a giant octopus sprawls its slimy legs over our cities states and nation.
At the head is a small group of banking houses generally referred to as
'international bankers.' This little coterie... run our government for
their own selfish ends. It operates under cover of a self-created
screen...[and] seizes...our executive officers... legislative bodies...
schools... courts... newspapers and every agency created for the public
protection."
Quote by: | John F. Hylan Mayor of New York 1918-1925 |
<<<<<>>>>>
John Francis HylanJohn Francis Hylan (April 20, 1868–January 12, 1936), nicknamed "Red Mike", was the Mayor of New York City from 1918 to 1925. Hylan graduated from New York Law School in 1897.
Hylan was born in Hunter, New York a town in upstate Greene County where his family owned a farm. Hylan married young, became dissatisfied with farm life and moved to Brooklyn with his bride. He found work on the Brooklyn Union Elevated Railroad and rose through the ranks to become a locomotive engineer. Ambitious, he studied law even as he worked on the railroad. He was fired after allegedly taking a curve too fast, endangering a supervisor who had been preparing to cross a track. Hylan always contended that he was wrongfully discharged.
Despite his industriousness, he was described, even by his friends, as a mediocre intellect. Nevertheless, he became a judge in the Kings County (Brooklyn) county court and was in that position when he was tapped by Tammany Hall as a dark-horse candidate for Mayor, running as a Democrat, through the promotion of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, who shared with him a desire for municipal ownership of utilities.
Hylan defeated the reformer John Purroy Mitchel in the 1917 mayoral election, restoring the power of Tammany at City Hall. He easily won re-election in 1921 but was defeated for re-nomination in 1925 by State Senator James J. "Jimmy" Walker. Walker later appointed Hylan to the municipal judiciary.
As mayor, Hylan railed against "the interests" and put in motion the building of a publicly owned and operated subway system, which became the IND division of the New York City Subway. Hylan Boulevard on Staten Island was named for him. Hylan died of a heart attack at the age of 67 on January 12, 1936.
Hylan's most famous words against "the interests" was the following speech, made in 1922, while he was the sitting Mayor of New York City:
"...The real menace of our republic is this invisible government which like a giant octopus sprawls its slimy length over City, State, and nation... It seizes in its long and powerful tentacles our executive officers, our legislative bodies, our schools, our courts, our newspapers, and every agency created for the public protection..."
"To depart from mere generalisations, let me say that at the head of this octopus are the Rockefeller-Standard Oil interest and a small group of powerful banking houses generally referred to as the international bankers. The little coterie of powerful international bankers virtually run the United States government for their own selfish purposes."
"They practically control both parties, write political platforms, make catspaws of party leaders, use the leading men of private organisations, and resort to every device to place in nomination for high public office only such candidates as will be amenable to the dictates of corrupt big business..."
"These international bankers and Rockefeller-Standard Oil interests control the majority of the newspapers and magazines in this country. They use the columns of these papers to club into submission or drive out of office public officials who refuse to do the bidding of the powerful corrupt cliques which compose the invisible government...."
This "invisible government", Hylan and others argued, exercised its control of the US Government through the Federal Reserve.
Cultural references
In the first issue of The New Yorker (February 21, 1925), a humor piece on the history of New York refers to John F. Hylan as "Jonef Hylan":
The next great figure in the early legends of New York is that of Jonef Hylan. Hylan, in all probability, was not a real person; but it is impossible to understand New York without giving careful study to the Hylan myth. In many respects, it resembles the Sun Myth of other great civilizations; for his head was as a head of flame, and he rose early each morning from beyond the East River, bringing light into all the dark places and heat into the sessions of the Board of Estimate. The populace called their Sun God "Red Mike"; but in the frenzy of their devotions, they simply yelled "Ra! Ra!"
He is then characterized as a "Champion of the People versus the Interests," which are "not people." Satan, it says, was behind the Interests, but William Randolph Hearst was behind Hylan, "and that evened things up."
A bust honoring Mayor Hylan may be seen in the Monday Room at Public Restaurant in New York.

AMERICA ACCORDING TO RON PAUL
America According to Ron Paul
By Dana Gabriel http://www.newworldordermustbestopped.com/DanasBlog.html
It is exciting to chronicle the Ron Paul revolution of hope, liberty, and
freedom. You can never accurately gage how far any grassroots movement will
go, but his campaign shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Although
he has taken on the mantle of leader, it is our actions that have brought
success. He continues to perform well in debates and in interviews, and this
quarters campaign contribution numbers are expected to be good, which will
even further distance him from the bottom pack candidates and give him a
better chance at becoming president. We have all witnessed the chuckles,
snickers, the taunting, the ridicule, the misrepresentation, and the
outright disrespect that some have directed his way. He is focused, refuses
to engage in sandbox politics, and continues to put his heart, soul, and
body on the line because he sincerely wants to make this country better. He
isn't an establishment type, and unlike other politicians, he doesn't wish
to further control our lives. America according to Ron Paul would be a
safer, freer, more independent, and more liked nation around the world.
Ron Paul understands the importance of the constitution and national
sovereignty. He believes that they are obstacles to the global elite, and
that both are threatened by continued U.S. membership in the United Nations.
He views the UN as an undemocratic body that serves as a forum for
anti-Americanism, and doesn't wish to see our armed forces under its
control. He said, We should stop worrying about the UN and simply walk away
from it by withdrawing our membership and our money. We should demand a
return to real national sovereignty, and respect other nations by rejecting
our failed interventionist foreign policy. The United Nations is the
necessary mechanism in place for a world government that wishes to control
all aspects of our lives. Ron Paul stated, The choice is very clear: we
either follow the constitution or submit to UN global governance.
It is isn't only the UN that we are ceding more and more sovereignty to.
Other unelected and unaccountable organizations like the WTO are also a real
threat. Ron Paul said, the WTO is the third leg of the globalists' plan for
a one-world, centrally-managed economic system. First of all, we don't need
a treaty to have trade, and both NAFTA and CAFTA are not about free or fair
trade but represent government-managed agreements. Ron Paul is a co-sponsor
of resolutions stating that Congress should not engage in the construction
of a NAFTA Superhighway or any other agreement that promotes or advances the
concept of a NAU. He said, Any movement toward a North American Union
diminishes the ability of average Americans to influence the laws under
which they must live.
Ron Paul advocates a humble foreign policy and believes that we should not
entangle ourselves in the affairs of other nations. He said, We can
continue to fund and fight no-win police actions around the globe, or we can
refocus on securing America and bring the troops home. That means bringing
the troops back from Iraq, which he has always viewed as an unconstitutional
war in the first place. He wishes to secure our own borders and coastlines
and enforce visa rules and is against any sort of amnesty. Ron Paul
understands that there is a fine line in becoming a protectionist and
isolationist and stated, Let us have a strong America, conducting open
trade, travel, communication, and diplomacy with other nations.
Many people hear that Ron Paul wants to the end income tax and eliminate the
IRS, they like the idea but can't understand how this could possibly be
done. He believes that income tax isn't necessary to pay for government
services, and by cutting spending overtime it could be eliminated. He said,
Few people know that every penny of the income tax is used to service
federal debt. He went on to say, If we stop incurring debt, we can quickly
end the IRS. A limited constitutional government with low taxes, one that
doesn't interfere in the business of other nations, sounds good to me. Ron
Paul has always been on the front lines fighting for our privacy, freedoms,
and liberties. Whether it be his opposition to the Patriot Act or the
National ID Act, he understands the importance of a free society and
recognizes that the biggest threat to it is the government itself. One of
the great things about Ron Paul is that it doesn't matter if you find a
quote or statement he made yesterday, two months, or five years ago-his
principles and philosophy have remained consistent and true to the
constitution.
Many in the patriot movement have known for quite sometime that Ron Paul
represents what is right with America. It has taken others a little longer
to catchup with his message, and I pray that more will wake-up. It is
impossible to ever agree with everything someone says or does, but I am
convinced that the changes that he would bring about can and will save this
country. America and the world would be a much safer and freer place with
him as president. If another attack on a country like Iran or Syria doesn't
take place before the 2008 elections, his presidency might be one of the
only things that could prevent such a strike and further escalation in the
Middle East. We all know that just because one man becomes president, things
will not automatically change for the better overnight. Improvements will
have to be done gradually, but they will not require us making sacrifices at
the expense of our freedoms or the constitution. He is the right man to lead
us back on the road to recovery and respectability, not only in our own
eyes, but in the eyes of all those around the world. Ron Paul's campaign
continues to win over the hearts and minds of the people with his simple
message of freedom for America.
FRITZ CREMER
Fritz Cremer
Fritz Cremer (1906-1993) was a German sculptor of catholic extraction who turned to communism in the 1920s. Originally a stone-cutter, he studied at Berlin and got a government grant for the German academy in Rome, Villa Massimo, from 1937 to 1938. His communist past, possibly not particularly spectacular in terms of political action, seems not to have been taken into account the Nazi regime; but this is by no means a singular case since talents of all kinds were sought after and employed in the culture industries as long as they kept quiet about their former political options. Cremer served as a soldier from 1940 to 1944, spending an extended leave in Rome where the German Academy had been taken over by the German army. In 1946, vouched for by his party comrades, he got a professorship and the chair of sculpture department of the Academy for Applied Art in Vienna.
During his time in Austria, Cremer designed two memorials for the victims of fascism, a small one for the French prisoners at Mauthausen and a very important and controversial one at the central cemetery of Vienna. Controversy was sparked off by the memorial's dedication to the victims of Fascism as from 1934, the year that an authoritarian regime accepted by the catholic church took power in Austria. In 1950, Cremer moved to the German Democratic Republic and took over the master class at the Academy of the Arts, later serving as vice-president from 1974 to 1983. His most important work by far during his earlier life in the GDR and a major example of XXth-century art in Europe is Cremer's memorial at the former concentration camp of Buchenwald, high up in the hills above Weimar. A further memorial at Mauthausen was commissioned to Cremer by the German Democratic Republic's Association of Victiums of Fascism in the mid-1960s. This memorial dominates a pivotal area of the former concentration camp, the access road to the stone quarries where most of the camp's victims died.
Cremer was respected in the GDR because he sometimes spoke up against the communist regime's stubborn denial of modernism and artistic liberty; he was never censored since no doubt seems ever to have been cast on his political sincerity. Part of his authority, of course, was due to his decision to move to the East and to denounce Western policies during the Cold War. A good example of his intransigency, comparable to that of the right-wing caricaturist A. Paul Weber in West Germany, was the widely distributed and quite masterly cycle of lithographs in which he denounced the Hungarian rebellion, shortly after the event.
Cremer was an excellent draughtsman (draftsman?); his prints and drawings are sometimes far more interesting than his later works of sculpture, from the 1970s onwards.

Tonight, I watched the Sunday Night Local News on Channel 9 WFLA, and saw a 15 second report on today's RED MASS. Afterwards, I watched the Sunday Night NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, and they showed another 15 second (mini) report on today's RED MASS. Yet, I couldn't get any other information on the Net except the info above.. I Google searched Red Mass and there was nothing current available; I went to wfla.com, and found nothing there; Then, I searched msnbc.com, there I couldn't find anything either. Lastly, I checked washingtonpost.com, surely there would be a report there: Not at all. No information on an event where the U.S. Congress, The hierarchy of the Catholic Church in Washington D.C., and possibly members of The Supreme Court , and possibly The President and the Vice President. Yet, no dice; Nothing to view in writing, or those delectable photographs of our elected officials and those appointed, rubbing elbows (hob-nobbing) with the nation's top Catholic Cardinals. Hmmh? All righty then!
