The left isn’t celebrating America anymore — what will they celebrate instead?
The Hill's Headlines — July 4, 2026
Happy Fourth of July!
I wonder — how many Americans will be bothered or offended by that greeting today? And how many more Independence Days will we celebrate as a country? We have made it to 250, but it’s hard to imagine another hundred. It is much easier to imagine 20 or less.
A strong argument can be made that the left — via majority control of the media, academia, entertainment, science and medicine — is slowly but surely winning the messaging war. In fact, you might say they are crushing it.
Just look at the trend of stories online citing the fact that millions of Americans have little or no interest in celebrating the 250th anniversary of our nation. Or look at the rise of so-called “democratic socialist” candidates, who look upon the country created by our Founding Fathers as something that needs to be torn down and rebuilt from the inside. Don’t forget about the alarming results of a recent poll showing that more than half of Americans under age 30 said believe “democracy isn’t essential to the country’s identity.”
It is little wonder. Many of those young Americans grew up believing, after years of being taught in school, that our Founding Fathers were White supremacists and evil slave-owners from the privileged class, whose vision, courage and sacrifice must now be reexamined, rewritten and largely swept into the dustbin of history.
But it’s not just young people. In a recent Beacon Research-Shaw and Company Research-Fox News poll, Americans were split over America 250. Fifty-one percent of registered voters said they were excited for the 250th anniversary, while 49 percent said they were not. It is a result that would have been shocking before the Trump era; now it is the accepted norm.
As this evolution in viewing the history and meaning of our nation continues, here is a logical question: What day, reason, or event will the left pick to replace the Fourth of July?
Will it be May 1, International Workers’ Day? That is the day chosen by communist leaders and countries to honor the labor movement, the working class, and the ideological triumph of socialism. Will some on the left want to switch out the names of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin to celebrate instead Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro or Pol Pot?
Or will those who are suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome lean toward Jan. 20, 2029, because that will be the last day of the Trump presidency?
As the Fourth of July and the history of our Founding Fathers — one I wrote about in my book, “The 56” — continues to wither under the constant smears from the left, it is natural to wonder what those who revile the the birth of our nation and the dead white men behind it will glorify in their place? If the current trend continues, we may find out much sooner than later.

God’s children are to separate themselves from politics, from any alliance with unbelievers

The Lord would have His people bury political questions. On these themes silence is eloquence. Christ calls upon His followers to come into unity on the pure gospel principles which are plainly revealed in the word of God.
We cannot with safety vote for political parties; for we do not know whom we are voting for. We cannot with safety take part in any political scheme.
Those who are Christians indeed will be branches of the true vine, and will bear the same fruit as the vine. They will act in harmony, in Christian fellowship. They will not wear political badges, but the badge of Christ.
What are we to do, then?—Let political questions alone.
There is a large vineyard to be cultivated; but while Christians are to work among unbelievers, they are not to appear like worldlings. They are not to spend their time talking politics or acting politics; for by so doing they give the enemy opportunity to come in and cause variance and discord.
God’s children are to separate themselves from politics, from any alliance with unbelievers.
Do not take part in political strife. Separate from the world, and refrain from bringing into the church or school ideas that will lead to contention and disorder. Dissension is the moral poison taken into the system by human beings who are selfish.

Schumer Shutdown Showed Vermont Democrats are Warped by Washington
The Schumer shutdown has ended. While many are rejoicing that hundreds of Vermonters who are federal employees now have certainty that their paycheck is coming, and thousands on SNAP know they can buy groceries, some people are still upset. Most notably, Vermont’s three federal delegates have each made public statements indicating that reopening the government—and ensuring workers and families got paid—was not the outcome they wanted.
Vermont’s sole Congressional Representative, Becca Balint, called reopening “a mistake” and insisted her party needs to “hold the damn line,” suggesting she believed it would have been better to continue depriving federal workers of their salary and low-income Vermonters of their food assistance to score political points. She also said “this whole thing stinks” and, in another interview, called it “B.S.”
Senator Welch, once viewed as a moderate voice and consensus builder, had been rumored as someone who might cross over to help Republicans reopen the government. But when the roll was called, he was not among them. Despite admitting that “a shutdown is a failure” and has “negative impacts” on federal workers, he continued to obstruct even when it served no practical purpose.

Obamacare subsidies at center of Dem shutdown fight 'fuel' healthcare cost inflation, conservatives say
The weeklong shutdown drags on as Democrats push to extend Obamacare subsidies and conservatives warn they’re driving up healthcare costs

Fox News senior congressional correspondent Chad Pergram reports on Day 6 of the government shutdown on 'Special Report.'
The government has been shut down for a week and so far shows no clear sign of stopping, as Democrats continue to demand that any funding bill include an extension of enhanced Obamacare subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of 2025.
But conservative groups are pushing back hard, arguing that those subsidies are fuel on the fire of higher healthcare premiums.
"What the Biden COVID credit did is they made the situation worse in two ways: They shifted a portion of the premium away from the enrollees to the taxpayer, and they brought more people into the subsidy structure by lifting the cap at four times the poverty line," Brian Blase, president of Paragon Health Institute, told Fox News Digital.
"So if the underlying Obamacare subsidies were inflationary, then the Biden enhancements to it just pour fuel on that underlying inflationary structure."

Obamacare, formally called the Affordable Care Act (ACA), established a marketplace where healthcare insurers offer plans under certain rules set in place by the federal government, among other provisions. People and families are eligible for subsidies based on their income relative to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).
Former President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan, passed during the COVID-19 pandemic, expanded access so more Americans could qualify for subsidized Obamacare plans while also lowering out-of-pocket costs. A Democrat-led Congress later extended those benefits to 2025 under the Inflation Reduction Act.
Now, however, Democrats are warning that many Americans' healthcare costs are at risk of drastically rising if those enhanced subsidies are allowed to expire.
But conservative groups who have long objected to Obamacare's effects on the market are now arguing that the subsidies themselves have driven up the amount of money that healthcare companies charge for premiums.
Brittany Madni, executive vice president at the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC), told Fox News Digital, "You do have patients who are still continuing to pay high prices, and a huge reason that they're paying higher prices is because the entire system has been artificially inflated by the unaffordable mandates in Obamacare and the continued subsidies."
"The supersized COVID credit subsidies aren't reducing prices whatsoever. They're just adding funds to the insurance revenues," Madni said.
Obamacare did originally include a federal-level tax penalty for Americans who remained uninsured after its passage. That was repealed under the first Trump administration, but some states have levied their own penalties in its place.

Yes to Politics in the Pulpit. No to Endorsements.

The IRS says churches can endorse candidates. But the Black church has shown we can accomplish great change without doing so.

As a faith-engagement staffer for politicians, I’ve spent many Sundays in the back seats of black Suburbans. I was typically there with a driver and a candidate making a campaign stop at a church. It was my job to work with pastors or their teams and set up these events. Sometimes, a church leader supported the candidate. Other times, leaders were just feeling the person out. But regardless of how they felt, two questions always came up: “How do we do this without compromising the church’s moral and spiritual authority?” and “How do we make sure we protect the church’s tax-exempt status?”
Last week, the IRS seemed to take the second question off the table. In a court filing, the agency declared that political speech at a church or “through its usual channels of communication on matters of faith” does not run afoul of the Johnson Amendment, a provision of the tax code that bars tax-exempt organizations from engaging in political campaigns. The filing was made in a legal case brought by two evangelical churches and broadcasters who argued the provision violated their First Amendment rights. The IRS didn’t ask for a full repeal of the Johnson Amendment, which it rarely enforces against houses of worship. But the agency has essentially green-lighted church leaders who want to endorse candidates without worrying an officer will come knocking on their doors.
The shift has sparked fervent debate. Some celebrated it as a triumph for religious liberty or an opportunity for more active social justice work, while others fear it will embroil churches deeper into partisan politics. If we as the church can explicitly endorse politicians, the question becomes – should we?
Personally, I am proud to have done most of my work with Black churches in my hometown of Chicago, a city that’s known to be politically active. The type of work I did extends beyond Black churches and blue cities, but I believe the rich legacy of political engagement inside the Black church can be a good model for us to follow in this new moment.

Behind the Catholic Right’s Celebrity-Conversion Industrial Complex
From Russell Brand to JD Vance to Candace Owens, what happens when the Catholic Church chases influencers—and their legions of followers—down the rabbit hole of the right?

On Thursday, May 30, 593 years after Joan of Arc was burned at the stake, Candace Owens came to Scottsdale to take up her sword. It was the feast day of St. Joan, and there was an evening Mass at Phoenix’s Joan of Arc Church, then a trek to the suburban Hilton, where an upstart group named Catholics for Catholics was throwing a party to welcome Owens “home.” The group, founded in 2022 to declare non-Catholic Republicans “more Catholic” than their Democratic opponents, was presenting Owens its Joan of Arc Award for “giving Christ the King his proper due.”
It was a month out from Owens’s April announcement that she’d joined the Catholic Church and two months since she’d been fired by the right-wing Daily Wire. The events weren’t unrelated.
As a pundit and livestream host with an audience of millions, Owens has built a career premised on outrage. Before 2016 she’d been one among many writers peddling women’s-interest hot takes. But when she leapt right that year—after liberals criticized her plan to create a registry of online trolls—she found new support on the alt-right. She made videos declaring she didn’t care about Charlottesville and urged fellow Black voters to wage a “Blexit” from the Democratic “plantation.” She wore matching “White Lives Matter” T-shirts with Kanye West just before he began praising Hitler, then stayed largely silent when he did.
It only followed that Owens’s conversion would come wrapped in controversy too, namely her very public split with the Daily Wire. The controversy centered on her repeated use of the phrase “Christ is king,” a mantra with a contested legacy among Catholics but which in recent years has become associated with the young men who shout it the loudest—the far-right “groyper” movement that follows white nationalist livestreamer Nick Fuentes. Owens denounced the comparison as guilt by association, but her other recent comments—about WWII Germans being the victims of a “Christian Holocaust,” “gangs” of Hollywood Jews, and her taunt that the Daily Wire’s Jewish cofounder Ben Shapiro couldn’t “serve both God and money”—didn’t help her insistence that she was just making a statement of faith. In late March, the company announced it had parted ways with Owens, with one former colleague, Andrew Klavan, a Jewish convert to Christianity, suggesting she’d been fired for antisemitism, including her “Christ is King” tweets. (The Daily Wire did not respond to a request for comment.)
A bonanza of speculation arose about who might be next: Elon Musk, Tucker Carlson, Joe Rogan, Trump himself?
