A Campaign to Address Global Economic Inequality

Although the temper tantrums of Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu dominated mass media coverage of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, which opened in September 2026, the event also included the announcement of a far more significant matter: a campaign to address the problem of worldwide economic inequality.

On September 24, standing in for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Ronald Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, told General Assembly delegates that “the promise of democracy and international cooperation wanes when we cannot demonstrate that they can address inequality and insecurity.” Thus, “together with Brazil, Norway, and Spain, South Africa calls on this Assembly to throw its weight behind the establishment” of an International Panel on Inequality (IPI). Based on the model of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPI would research inequality within and between countries and develop policies to close the widening gap between the rich and the poor.

That gap is enormous. As Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and other specialists have recently reported, “the richest 10 percent of adults globally receives more than half (53 percent) of the world’s income, whereas the poorest half receives 8 percent.” When it comes to wealth, that “is even more concentrated, with the richest 10 percent owning around three-quarters of global wealth while the poorest half owns just 2 percent.” And “almost two-thirds of people live in countries where inequality is rising.” In turn, this economic inequality leads to “unequal access to education, health care, housing and finance,” factors shaping “the opportunities that direct people’s lives.”

The speech at the General Assembly, as well as the specialists’ report, originated with developments within the G20, an international forum of nations with advanced and emerging economies seeking to coordinate global economic policy. In 2025, when the South African government held the presidency of the G20, it commissioned a study of global inequality by independent experts and chaired by Stiglitz. Appearing last November, the study maintained that “inequality is one of the most urgent concerns in the world today,” and that “combating it is necessary and possible.” Indeed, according to the study, the inequality emergency was on a par with the climate emergency, and an IPI, once established, would gather information on the problem and propose solutions to it.

Recently, the campaign for a global response to global economic inequality has picked up momentum. By mid-September 2026, when the UN General Assembly session was underway, more than 1,500 economists and academics from more than 100 countries had signed an open letter backing the creation of an International Panel on Inequality. Among the high-profile signatories were former U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Nobel Prize-winning economist Daron Acemoglu, and numerous other prominent economists, including Thomas Piketty, Mariana Mazzucao, and Jayati Ghosh. In the letter, they maintained that “extreme concentrations of income and wealth translate into undemocratic concentrations of power, unravelling trust in our societies and polarizing our politics.”

UNIVERSAL FRATERNITY FOR THE SUNDAY LAW: THE MARK OF THE BEAST/ MARCOS ESCOBAR

The Final Crisis: The Sunday Law

Sep 12, 2026

Great changes are taking place in the world today; the religious powers are working hand in hand with the world powers to create the means for the establishment of the Mark of the Beast. The Sunday Law is taking shape. The powers of the earth are pressing the world for a more decisive action. There is presently an urgent call to unify the world in one fraternity, one world, one humanity, for the exaltation of the false sabbath. Humanity will not be able to buy or sell except they honor Sunday as the day of mandatory universal worship.

The signs of the imminence of the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus are being fulfilled. We must get ready; our redemption draws near.

Pope Leo XIV Urges Ecological Conversion: “It Is Not Yet Too Late”

Pope Leo XIV Urges Ecological Conversion: “It Is Not Yet Too Late”

Pope Leo XIV calls for ecological conversion, urging Christians to care for creation, aid the poor, and transform destruction into life.

News Room (September 2, 2026, Gaudium Press ) Pope Leo XIV has called on Christians worldwide to embrace an “authentic ecological conversion,” urging believers to renew their commitment to caring for creation, supporting the poor, and restoring harmony within the natural world.

Speaking during a Mass for the Care of Creation in the Garden of the Madonnina del Borgo Laudato Si’, located within the Pontifical Gardens of Castel Gandolfo, the Pope marked the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation by reflecting on humanity’s relationship with the environment and its Creator. His homily also inaugurated the annual Season of Creation, a five-week period dedicated to prayer, reflection, and action for the protection of the Earth.

Drawing from the liturgical readings, Pope Leo emphasized that creation itself serves as a pathway to God. Referencing the Book of Wisdom, he encouraged the faithful to move beyond simple admiration of nature’s beauty and power and instead recognize the Creator behind it.

He noted that natural phenomena such as fire, wind, flowing water, and the stars evoke wonder, but their deepest significance lies in pointing humanity toward God. Likewise, he highlighted Psalm 18, which proclaims that the heavens and the firmament reveal the glory and handiwork of the Creator.

The Pope also reflected on a passage from the Gospel of Matthew, which speaks of the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. He said these examples reveal not only the beauty of creation but also God’s special concern for humanity. If God provides for plants and animals with such care, he explained, believers can trust in the divine attention given to human needs.

Set amid the natural surroundings of Castel Gandolfo’s gardens, the celebration underscored the Pope’s invitation to contemplation. He encouraged people to step back from the pace and noise of modern life in order to experience the harmony of creation more deeply.

According to Pope Leo, this practice of contemplation is not simply an appreciation of nature but the first step toward a profound spiritual transformation. He described it as an “authentic ecological conversion,” in which an encounter with Jesus Christ becomes evident in the way individuals relate to the world around them.

38 experts say ‘climate alarmism’ has become a profit-driven religion

Tom Harris Thu Jul 9

Religion has been a force throughout history that has helped societies flourish and given people meaning, but it has also been a vehicle for fundamentalism and intolerance. A religion can be characterized by a common set of beliefs about the truth of existence, ritual practices, moral codes, and a community of those who share the same beliefs. From this standpoint, climate alarmism has become nothing short of a religion, one that has been taking over societies around the world.

The newly released book, Canary in a Climate World: Climate Realism vs. the Net Zero Myth, is an eye-opening compilation of essays from 38 experts about the science of climate change, the fallacies of Net Zero, and the story we are not being told by the government and media.

Margaret Anna Alice, a writer focusing on propaganda and psychology, writes in her Canaries essay about how she lost her “religion” of climate alarmism, which for her had been an “inviolable belief.” She writes that “In this religion, gods such as the United Nations carve out the Ten Commandments in the form of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Agenda 21, Agenda 2030, and the SDG7 Global Roadmap for achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.”

Additionally, “sermons” cite the “sacred texts” of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), shaming everyday citizens into believing that they are contributing to a devastating environmental catastrophe. It is only by aligning themselves with the religion of climate alarmism that they will be redeemed from their sins. Namely, by giving up their standards of living and putting their hard-earned money toward expensive projects to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) or subsidize intermittent and expensive renewable power such as wind and solar.

Just like the church in Medieval Europe, the climate doctrine is widespread and encroaches into our daily lives. Yet data corruption abounds at the IPCC and other official institutions, and for decades, few scientists have had the courage to speak out against it with their livelihoods on the line. These “heretics” are ostracized, lose their jobs, or are refused funding. But the tide is shifting. With the serious consequences of climate policies being enacted, now is the time to reveal that the climate scare is based on corruption and flawed ideology. Governments will spend trillions of dollars and drive their citizens into poverty if we continue down the route to Net Zero. IPCC contributor Mike Hulme admitted that “The debate around climate change is fundamentally about power and politics rather than the environment.” And the scientists and experts writing in Canary in a Climate World: Climate Realism vs. the Net Zero Myth are also disseminating crucial information to help us better understand the climate and the policies that have stifled our society’s growth for decades.

Global oceans break June temperature record with fears they’re headed into ‘uncharted territory’

The Pacific Ocean at Windansea Beach on ...

The planet’s oceans are at unprecedented temperatures for this time of year, breaking the all-time June record, according to new data, with alarming implications for global weather and marine life.

On June 21, average global sea surface temperatures reached 69.5 degrees Fahrenheit (20.86 Celsius), edging above the June record last set in 2024, according to data from Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, which combines measurements from satellites, ships and buoys.

The record was echoed in another data set. Data from the Copernicus Marine Service, implemented by the non-profit Mercator Ocean International, found sea temperatures hit 69.38 Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) on June 21, beating the previous record last set in 2024 by 0.18 degrees Fahrenheit.

The abnormal heat has been driven by the onset of El Niño, a natural climate pattern characterized by unusually warm waters along the equatorial tropical Pacific Ocean. El Niño has only just started but it may intensify into one of the strongest in decades.

Layered underneath that is the human-driven climate crisis, which is also driving up temperatures. For decades, oceans have acted as the planet’s main heat sink, absorbing 90% of the excess heat produced by humans burning fossil fuels.

“Rising sea surface temperatures are therefore not unexpected,” said Michael Meredith, an ocean scientist at the British Antarctic Survey. “But the pace of warming we are now seeing is alarming.”

It’s not yet clear whether this unprecedented June heat is temporary or a sign of things to come, but experts are expressing concern.

“Current conditions could indicate the beginning of a new phase, leading, once more, to uncharted territory,” said Carlo Buontempo, director of Copernicus Climate Change Service. “With ocean temperatures at these levels and El Niño on the horizon, we are likely to see more temperature records fall in the coming months.”

What happens in the oceans has huge implications for global weather patterns. Hotter oceans keep the air warmer, fueling heat waves; energize storms making them fiercer; and increase evaporation, boosting the chances of extreme rainfall and flooding.

Ocean heat can also lead to the mass bleaching of coral reefs, the death of other marine life and increased sea level rise.

Woke Paris politician blames Americans and our air conditioning for Europe heat wave that has killed 1,300 people

Deadly Heatwave Bakes Europe as Record Temperatures Persist

A Paris politician blamed Americans and US air conditioning for the record-breaking heat wave in Europe that has resulted in more than 1,300 excess deaths.

After US tourists mocked France over the lack of air conditioning across the country amid 104-degree temperatures, Audrey Pulvar, deputy mayor of Paris for international relations, claimed the situation was partly America’s fault.

“Dear American journalists and social media ‘influencers’: for days, some of you have been criticizing and making fun of Paris because the city does not have A/C in every room … OMG, this is so rich!” Pulvar wrote on social media.

“As the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions in the world, you bear a significant amount of responsibility for global warming and the consequences we, in France, are experiencing. Your cities, which are 90 percent air conditioned, are not unrelated to this,” she added.

“So please, enough with the lecture. Just start doing your part,” the post concluded.

France has long been resistant to air conditioning, with only 25% of households in the country equipped with such cooling units.

The reticence to install AC has been attributed to concerns over the environment, the culture, and strict building codes — but the tides have begun changing as summers get hotter and hotter.

The spat between Pulvar and Americans comes amid a record heat wave in Europe, with France experiencing a surge of deaths that have left morgues struggling to keep up.

France has recorded at least 1,300 excess deaths since June 21, the public health agency said Sunday, warning that the final figures could be higher.

Pope: God will ask us if we have cared for our common home

Pope: God will ask us if we have cared for our common home

October 2, 2025  Ecojes Admin

Pope Leo addresses participants in an international conference on climate justice and reflects on Pope Francis’ landmark ecological encyclical Laudato Si, noting that when the time comes, God will ask us if we cared for our common home.

Posted on: October 1, 2025 – by: Francesca Merlo – vaticannews.va

On Wednesday afternoon, marking the tenth anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’, Pope Leo XIV addressed participants in the Raising Hope Conference, organised by the Laudato Si’ Movement.

In his address, the Pope expressed gratitude for the legacy of Pope Francis’ encyclical, noting how its message has inspired schools, dioceses, academic programmes, and international dialogue.

“Its impact,” he said, “has extended to summits, interreligious initiatives, economic and business circles, as well as theological and bioethical studies.” Above all, he noted that the phrase “care for our common home” has become a standard phrase, used in academic work and public discourse across peoples and continents.

A conversion of heart

While recalling the achievements of the past decade, Pope Leo emphasised that the challenges identified in Laudato Si’ are “even more relevant today than they were ten years ago.” These challenges, he said, are not only political and social, but also spiritual, calling for what Pope Francis described as a “conversion of heart.”

The Pope explained that the heart “is where the deepest searching takes place, where one’s ultimate identity is found, and where decisions are forged. It is only by returning to the heart that a true ecological conversion can take place.” This transformation, he continued, means shifting “from collecting data to caring; from environmental discourse to lifestyles inspired by faith and love of God.”

All are one

Quoting Pope Francis’ description of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Holy Father reminded participants that ecological concern, justice for the poor, social commitment, and inner peace are inseparable.

Looking ahead to upcoming global summits, including COP30 and the UN’s 2026 Water Conference, the Pope urged leaders to heed the cries of “the Earth and the poor, families, indigenous peoples, involuntary migrants and believers throughout the world.”

What will be our answer?

Concluding his address, Pope Leo asked the question: “God will ask us if we have cultivated and cared for the world that He created, and if we have taken care of our brothers and sisters. What will be our answer?”

Speaking at the service were Rev. Dr Hyunju Bae, from the Presbyterian Church of Korea, and vice moderator of the WCC Commission on Climate Justice and Sustainable Development; Rev. Atahualpa Hernandez Miranda from Colombia, and Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu from the Democratic Republic of Congo. They called for immediate ecological transformation and climate justice.

Ecumenical partners work throughout the Season of Creation to engage Christians worldwide in prayer and action for creation care. Hundreds of participants globally joined the online service, which opened with the biblical promise from Isaiah chapter 32: “My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.”

Speakers acknowledged the gap between this vision and current climate realities affecting vulnerable communities.

“Fear and anxiety have become daily visitors for many people. A growing number of children and young people suffer from anxiety. Climate inaction plunges them into silent despair about their own future on this planet,” said Bae during her reflection on peace. She called for urgent action: “People from all walks of life should develop climate solutions together and act upon them through radical collaboration for a just transition.”

She emphasized the role of faith communities: “Peace with creation is waiting for committed Christians who are motivated by God's peace, rise above eco-anxiety and focus on action and advocacy, in contemplation and resilience.”

During the prayer, a collective confession acknowledged ecological misbehaviours and intercessions were offered for environmental refugees and communities affected by climate change.

The Season of Creation runs from 1 September until 4 October, with the theme “Peace with Creation,” engaging 2.2 billion Christians worldwide in creation care. A St Francis Day service led by the Season Of Creation youth committee will conclude the season on 4 October, gathering Christian voices worldwide via Zoom and YouTube.

Pope blasts new arms race, lack of climate action

Vatican releases Leo XIV's message for Day of Migrants, Refugees

Pope Leo XIV blasted the new arms race and the failure to address the climate crisis and social inequality in his message for the Catholic Church's World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR).
"The current global context is sadly marked by wars, violence, injustice and extreme weather events, which force millions of people to leave their homelands in search of refuge elsewhere," Leo said in the message, which the Vatican released on Friday before this year's WDMR on October 4-5.
"The widespread tendency to look after the interests of limited communities poses a serious threat to the sharing of responsibility, multilateral cooperation, the pursuit of the common good and global solidarity for the benefit of our entire human family.

"The prospect of a renewed arms race and the development of new armaments, including nuclear weapons, the lack of consideration for the harmful effects of the ongoing climate crisis, and the impact of profound economic inequalities make the challenges of the present and the future increasingly demanding.

"Faced with frightening scenarios and the possibility of global devastation, it is important that there be a growing desire in people's hearts for a future of peace and of respect for the dignity of all".
The pope said that migrants and refugees "stand as messengers of hope" in a world darkened by war and injustice.

"Their courage and tenacity bear heroic testimony to a faith that sees beyond what our eyes can see and gives them the strength to defy death on the various contemporary migration routes," he said.

"Every second counts": Doomsday Clock shows humanity closer than ever to catastrophe

Juan Manuel Santos

Juan Manuel Santos joins speakers Herb Lin, Suzet McKinney and Robert Socolow on stage for the Clock unveiling.

28 January 2025

The hands of the Doomsday Clock were moved forward to an unprecedented 89 seconds to midnight, the closest to catastrophe humanity has ever been. In his address at the Clock unveiling in Washington D.C., Chair of The Elders, Juan Manuel Santos highlighted the interconnect nature of entrenched, as well as emerging, existential threats and urged humanity to come together to protect our shared future.

Read his remarks in full:

Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished colleagues, and esteemed guests,

This clock is a stark diagnosis of our reality.

At 89 seconds to midnight, the Doomsday Clock stands closer to catastrophe than at any moment in its history.

The Clock speaks to the existential threats that confront us, and the need for unity and bold leadership to turn back its hands.

2024 was the hottest year on record, unleashing devastating climate shocks that destroyed lives and livelihoods across the globe.

The only effective response is for nations to work together, which is why it is so alarming that President Trump has signalled his intention to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement. In this crucial year for climate action ahead of COP30 in Brazil, I urge all other signatories to double down and reaffirm their commitment to meeting the Paris goals.

The climate crisis is a force multiplier for instability and insecurity, amplifying the likelihood and severity of all other existential threats.
