Coast Guard searching for Canadian medical plane with 6 aboard off Nantucket

A Boston-bound medical plane carrying six people suffered a terrifying “one-two punch” as it lost contact with air traffic control before vanishing off the coast of Nantucket, a leading aviation expert tells the Herald.

Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general of the U.S. Department of Transportation, said flight tracking data reveals a harrowing struggle in the minutes before contact went dark early Saturday morning. Hours later into the night, searchers found a “debris field” off the coast of Nantucket.

The Latitude Air Ambulance flight was cruising on autopilot before an initial failure caused its speed to deteriorate and surge, triggering a “precipitous drop” from 24,000 feet, Schiavo told the Herald.

The crew then managed to level the plane off at 11,000 feet and steady its speed, she added, appearing to regain control – only to fly straight into the heart of an intense storm front churning off the Nantucket coast.

“They had a dire one-two punch,” Schiavo said. “Whatever happened caused the precipitous drop, and as soon as they got it stabilized at 11,000 feet, boom, they hit this weather front that was moving through.”

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed Saturday afternoon that its Northeast District is frantically searching the waters off Nantucket for the Gulfstream G100 aircraft, which declared an emergency with New York Center Air Traffic Control before it plunged amid an apparent total electrical failure.

The Federal Aviation Administration notified the Coast Guard at about 2 a.m. that contact had been lost with the aircraft operated by Latitude Air Ambulance, a medical plane provider based at Hamilton International Airport in Ontario, Canada, according to records.

While weather conditions on Nantucket were clear early Saturday morning, an intense storm system swirled directly along the projected flight path of the missing plane, according to National Weather Service radar data.

Schiavo added that investigators will take a close look at what air traffic control told the flight crew, noting that initial weather reports showed clear conditions with eight miles of visibility.

A Flydubai co-pilot accused of attacking the captain of a flight bound for Israel has been identified as an Omani national previously barred from flying in his home country over concerns about alleged extremist views, according to media reports.

There has been no official confirmation of the pilot’s identity or his beliefs.

The United Arab Emirates on Saturday described Wednesday’s incident on board Flight FZ1073 as an attempted “terrorist operation”, saying the co-pilot attacked Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, with an emergency axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft.

But investigators are still working to establish the motive and whether anyone else was connected to the attack, which has raised concerns about pilot vetting and aviation security.

Here is what we know:
What do we know about the accused pilot?

The co-pilot suspected of attacking the captain of the Dubai-Tel Aviv flight carrying 174 people has been identified as Hamam al-Hammami, an Omani national, three people with knowledge of the situation, including a Gulf diplomat and a Western diplomat, told AP news agency.

All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media. The Gulf diplomat said investigations are under way to establish whether he acted as a “lone wolf or had any connection with any extremist groups”.

US media outlet CNN, quoting a source and an Israeli official, reported that al-Hammami is an Omani citizen who was born in the UAE to a Syrian mother and spent several years in the Emirates.

What we're learning about the FlyDubai co-pilot who allegedly stabbed the captain and tried to crash the plane

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: October 2, 2026 / 9:23 AM EDT / CBS News

One day after a FlyDubai co-pilot made a violent attempt to crash the passenger aircraft and was subdued by passengers and other crew members, questions about his identity and motive continued to swirl Thursday.

The flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was approaching Israel when the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the flight captain and attempted to crash the aircraft, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said. The captain was able to fight off the co-pilot long enough to unlock the cockpit door. Passengers then overpowered the co-pilot, and two off-duty pilots who were on the flight managed to gain control of the aircraft and make an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

There were 174 people aboard the plane. No passengers were seriously injured in the incident. The pilot sustained stab wounds in the attack. Saudi authorities said two crew members were hospitalized with unspecified injuries, and the co-pilot remained in custody on Thursday.

Who was the FlyDubai co-pilot?

The co-pilot of the flight has not yet been publicly identified.

An Omani official confirmed to CBS News that the attacker was born in Oman and currently holds Omani citizenship, but the Omani government has not publicly confirmed his nationality.

CIA accused of 'poisoning the sky' with toxins as files expose secret weather control agenda

By CHRIS MELORE, US ASSISTANT SCIENCE EDITOR

Published: 16:25 EDT, 17 March 2026 | Updated: 06:05 EDT, 18 March 2026

Once top-secret CIA files have detailed America's plans to control the world by manipulating the weather.

The documents, declassified in 2003, discussed the controversial topic of weather modification, the tactic of launching rockets or using planes to dump chemicals into the atmosphere that alter the climate and local storm systems.

Although the resurfaced documents from 1965 did not mention the specific chemicals used in the experiments, they did discuss the need for more funding of the weather modification projects that would soon be used as a weapon of war.

In fact, the memos noted that federal funding for the secret program was set to be four times higher in 1967 - the same year the US began spraying toxins over Vietnam to cause floods and landslides.

One post on X claimed: 'The CIA has been poisoning the sky and controlling the weather since 1965!'

The 18-page report was recently shared by conspiracy theorists, years after it was quietly placed into the CIA's public archives, including a letter praising the classified operation from US President Lyndon B Johnson.

Johnson's endorsement of the CIA's weather modification project came just three years after he gave an ominous speech on the future of America and the work to create 'weather satellites' with the power to strengthen storms.

While giving the commencement address at Southwest Texas State University in May 1962, then-Vice President Johnson said: 'He who controls the weather will control the world.'

Conspiracy theorists have claimed that airliners have been pouring various chemicals into the atmosphere for years for nefarious reasons including population control and mind control

Speaking on the factory floor in front of a newly completed F-35, Hegseth thanked the more than 600 employees in attendance for their role in equipping the U.S. military.

Lockheed Martin on Monday welcomed U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to its F-35 Lightning II production facility in Fort Worth as part of his nationwide Arsenal of Freedom Tour, a visit that highlighted the company’s central role in U.S. defense manufacturing and a record year for the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft.

Hegseth toured the F-35 final assembly line, met with Lockheed Martin executives, and addressed more than 600 employees inside the sprawling North Texas facility, which employs roughly 19,000 workers. The Fort Worth plant is the sole final assembly site for the F-35 and anchors a national supply chain of more than 1,900 suppliers, over half of them small businesses.

“I’m looking out into an incredible audience of Americans here who are committed to an incredible company that’s building incredible platforms,” Hegseth told employees. “Thank you for accepting and grasping the challenge of President Trump as well as our department. We are shoulder to shoulder with you because we can’t deter the next conflict without the skills and capabilities you have.”

Pope Leo XIV doubles down on insistence for 2-state solution to resolve Israeli-Palestinian conflict

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE — Pope Leo XIV doubled down Sunday on the Holy See’s insistence on a two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying in his first airborne news conference that it was the “only solution” that could guarantee justice for both sides.

Leo made the comments as he flew from Istanbul to Beirut for the second and final leg of his maiden voyage as pope. Though Leo has been fielding journalists’ questions at informal gatherings at his country house, the brief encounter marked his first news conference as pope and followed the tradition of his predecessors of using his foreign trips to engage with the media.

Because of the short flight, the news conference was limited to two questions from Turkish journalists. When Leo returns to Rome on Tuesday, the encounter will presumably be longer.
