God’s Spooks: Religion, Spying, and the Cold War

by Matthew Avery Sutton

January 15, 2026

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.
—John 8:32, inscribed on the wall at CIA headquarters, Langley, VA

In the early years of World War II, the U.S. State Department asked all American personnel living near enemy lines in China to return home. Baptist missionary John Birch refused to leave. God, he believed, wanted him in Asia. For years Birch had worked with local Chinese communities. He knew their language, their customs, and the layout of their land. He soon put this knowledge to work—not just for God but for Uncle Sam. In 1942 his life took a dramatic turn when a squadron of bombers led by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle crashed in the Chinese countryside. The American airmen had taken off from a carrier in the Pacific, dropped bombs on Tokyo, and then flown toward safety in China, where they parachuted from their planes as their fuel supplies ran out. When Birch received word of the raid and subsequent crash, he rendezvoused with the soldiers and helped them navigate through enemy lines and to freedom.

Birch’s performance impressed the Army and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). They saw in Birch a loyal foot soldier who knew the Chinese language and understood the geography and politics of the region. They put him to work, baptizing him in the waters of covert operations. During and immediately after the war Birch provided the OSS with intelligence on Chinese communism while still fronting as a missionary. He was eventually captured by communists and killed, becoming the first “martyr” of the Cold War. He later became the inspiration for Robert Welch’s extreme right-wing, anti-communist John Birch Society. Birch’s work for the government revealed that religious activists could make extremely valuable contributions to American intelligence services. But his death also demonstrated the potential consequences of mixing faith with work for the U.S. government.

What follows investigates the complicated relationship between the CIA and religion. Since its inception, the CIA has used missionaries and other religious activists for intelligence and espionage work; it has used religion as an effective propaganda tool, and its agents have even posed as clergy. CIA agents and religious activists managed to keep their partnerships mostly hidden until the 1970s. But in the wake of Vietnam and Watergate, numerous journalists and then Congress began scrutinizing the agency more closely. They revealed to the world that the CIA had been employing missionaries to further its agenda and that some religious activists were receiving substantial rewards for their work on the government’s behalf. In fact, the CIA and religious activists have long collaborated to achieve numerous policy goals.

In recent years, historians of religion have worked to better embed their narratives in the rich and complex historical contexts in which their subjects acted, linking issues of faith and belief to the ebbs and flows of particular environments. Historians Jon Butler, Paul Harvey, and Kevin Schultz have called for better integration of religion into more “mainstream” American history. The case of missionary-CIA collaboration answers that call by demonstrating how important it is for scholars to understand the many ways that religion functions in ostensibly nonreligious spheres. In the specific case of intelligence and espionage, religion had tangible impacts on American covert activities abroad. CIA-missionary relationships highlight underexplored intersections between religion and foreign policy; they expose in new ways the complicated nature of church-state collaboration; and they offer fresh insights into the many ways in which religion functions in nontraditional spheres.

At the same time, historians have much to learn by probing how and in what ways individuals and religious groups have benefited from their cooperation with the government. The State Department has often helped missionary groups expedite visas and gain entry into new regions of the world in return for their collaboration. Some government agencies have also provided humanitarian ministries with cash, food, and other supplies, subsidizing and supporting their work. Missionaries have received equally valuable, even if less tangible, benefits as well: many have found satisfaction in the conviction that in serving Uncle Sam, they were serving God. Despite the official disestablishment of religion, these partnerships illustrate how the state can serve as a historical actor, substantially aiding, or substantially undermining, a wide variety of missionary ventures.

Cuban foreign agent running for Congress claims conflicting residencies

Story by Hudson Crozier, Washington Examiner

Cuban foreign agent running for Congress claims conflicting residencies

A registered foreign agent for Cuba is running for Congress in Rhode Island despite attesting that he lives in both the Ocean State and Florida, documents reviewed by the Washington Examiner show.

GOP House candidate Victor Mellor wrote Englewood, Florida, as his residence in a June filing with the Department of Justice and a Warwick, Rhode Island, address as his "business address" — despite campaigning for Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District. He also obtained a July marriage license in Florida that seemingly contradicted the DOJ filing by labeling Warwick as his "residence." The city's public property records further complicate the picture, listing a different couple as owners of the property at the Warwick address.

The records raise questions about Mellor's Rhode Island roots as he competes with GOP-endorsed primary opponent Stephen Skoly for incumbent Rep. Seth Magaziner's (D-RI) seat. Mellor has the support of former Donald Trump advisers Rudy Giuliani and Michael Flynn. He also counts Trump allies Roger Stone and Joseph Flynn, Michael Flynn's brother, as campaign staffers.

Mellor's campaign did not respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment. A campaign spokesperson told the Providence Journal that the Florida "address discrepancy" in the DOJ filing "stems from a clerical error made by the law firm Vic has used in the past." Mellor is a Rhode Island native who "continues to reside in Warwick," the spokesperson told the paper.

However, Mellor and his female partner's names do not appear in search results in Warwick's property database. Instead, Sarasota County, Florida's property appraiser lists the couple as owners of a parcel at the same Englewood address Mellor reported as his residence to the DOJ. Sarasota County last updated the listing on Sunday.

The Jesuit Order – The Society of Jesus

“The Jesuit Order – The Society of Jesus”

A Tale – and Trail – of Assassination, Brutality, Cunning, Deceit, Deception, Espionage, Expulsion, Genocide, Hatred, Inquisition, Mass Murder, Prevarication, Sedition, Subversion, Torture, Treason, and Wickedness.

 I. Introduction:

The Jesuit Order – a.k.a. the Society of Jesus, the Order of Jesus, the Sons of Loyola, and “the Company” (it was once called “the Company of Jesus”) – was founded in 1534 by Ignatius Loyola. It was officially recognized as a Roman Catholic religious order by Pope Paul III in 1540. Jesuits are famous as educators, and as “father-confessors” to emperors, kings (and their mistresses), queens, princes, princesses, high-ranking military officers, and many of the powerful and wealthy elite of the world. Jesuits are also infamous as seducers of women in the confessional, murderers of kings, makers of sedition, organizers of coup d’états, infiltrators of Protestant denominations, instigators of massacres, and fomenters of wars and revolutions. Numerous books have been written about the Jesuit Order. Some of these books contend that many of the men at the higher levels of the Jesuit Order have been – and are – very evil men!

Let us carefully consider the following questions, which I hope to answer in the “conclusions” section of this newsletter:

  • 1. Is the Jesuit Order – at its higher levels – the most evil organization that the world has seen over the past 4½+ centuries?
  • 2. Why has the Jesuit Order been expelled from so many countries, including from many predominantly Roman Catholic countries, during its history?
  • 3. Are the Jesuit Order and the Jesuit-controlled Roman Catholic Church-State responsible for fomenting many wars and revolutions, such as World War I and World War II?
  • 4. Is the Jesuit-controlled Roman Catholic Church-State the greatest threat to civil and religious liberty that the world has ever seen?
  • 5. Have agents of the Jesuit Order been responsible for assassinating numerous heads of State over the centuries?
  • 6. Does the Jesuit Order, which controls the Roman Catholic Church-State, the Knights of Malta, the highest levels of the Knights of Columbus and of Opus Dei, and the highest levels of Freemasonry, etc., sit at the very top of the New World Order (N.W.O.) “pyramid”?
  • 7. Does the Jesuit Order, through its control of various secret societies, such as high-level Freemasonry and the Knights of Malta, control the International Intelligence Community?
  • 8. Does the Jesuit Order, through its control of the wealthy, powerful, and influential Knights of Malta – and other “agents” on the Jesuit payroll – control the International Banking Community?

Surely inquiring minds would like answers to the above questions. Please carefully read and consider the “definitions” found in the next section, and the numerous quotations dealing with the Jesuit Order that are found within this newsletter.

Important Note: The intention of this TTT issue is to expose many of the evil deeds carried out on the instructions of higher-level members of the Jesuit Order – including the General of the Order – and the resulting harm, mayhem, and death that the Jesuit Order’s actions and operations have brought to many peoples and nations. (The Jesuits have “justified” – or “excused” – these evil deeds with their “maxims” of “the end justifies the means” and “for the greater glory of God”!) The reader should keep in mind that lower-level Jesuits (especially those of the first three degrees) know little to nothing of the evil that goes on at the higher levels of the Jesuit Order. (The same can be said for most Roman Catholics, i.e., they know little to nothing of the evil that goes on at the higher levels of the Jesuit Order – or at the higher levels of the Papacy itself!) Unfortunately, these lower-level Jesuits – due to the blind obedience that they are required to give to all superiors in their order – are merely “tools” in the hands of their superiors; and these lower-level Jesuits often carry out various operations and activities for the sinister intermediate – and long-range – “goals” of the Jesuit Order – goals about which they know little to nothing!

¡Agente Doble!

PATRICK SAYS THERE ARE SEVERAL CUBAN DOUBLE AGENTS IN THE US GOVERNMENT WHO ACT LIKE STAUNCH REPUBLICANS BUT WHO CALL THE UNITED STATES THE "ENEMY" WHEN THEY DON'T THINK THEY'RE BEING RECORDED

On Monday afternoon, Patrick Byrne livestreamed an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on his Locals channel, which is behind a $5/mo membership paywall.

AzPinkLady on X.com took the liberty of tweeting-out this 1-minute clip from Patrick’s livestream, where he gives some insight as to how the CIA interfaced with Venezuela to cheat the elections – namely, through a man named Frank Holder.

IMAGE: Frank Holder’s LinkedIn profile.

Frank Holder is a former US Air Force Intelligence Officer (OSI) and the CEO of Holder Partners, LLC, a private company that conducts corporate and financial investigations in Latin America.

Patrick claims that he’s a “CIA double agent” who’s been a Cuban asset since 1980, and that “When the CIA needed to hack 2020, they used him as the go-between to Venezuela and set it up.”

Patrick says that there are several Cuban double agents in and around the US Government, who act like staunch Republicans but who are actually billionaires, like Frank Holder from doing business with Venezuela’s Chavista regime and with the Cubans, as he told Emerald Robinson on The Absolute Truth podcast last April.

One of these Cuban double agents, Manuel Rocha got caught in late 2023. In a video recorded by an undercover agent, Rocha praised Fidel Castro, called the United States the "enemy" and boasted about spying for over 40 years, while working at the State Department.

According to the criminal complaint, Rocha said that he was instructed by Cuba to "lead a normal life", and he created a fictitious persona of a "right-wing person". Rocha's $750 campaign donation to Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar was returned after his arrest.

Vatican Espionage:The Holy Alliance of Spies

By SPYSCAPE

‍Even today, the CIA is referred to as the ‘Catholic Intelligence Agency’ while the Vatican’s ties to espionage date back more than five centuries.

With the inauguration of President Ronald Reagan in 1981, Washington and Vatican City quietly made strategic contact - so too did CIA Director William Casey and special envoy Monsignor Luigi Poggi, otherwise known as the ‘Pope’s Spy’.

By the time Reagan and Pope John Paul II met face-to-face in the Vatican Library in 1982, they were ready to discuss a joint, clandestine campaign centered on Poland and designed to thwart communism and the Soviet Union. "This was one of the great secret alliances of all time," Richard Allen, Reagan's first National Security Adviser, later recalled.

Meanwhile, in the same wing of the papal apartments that day, US Secretary of State Alexander Haig and Reagan’s National Security Adviser focused on Israel’s invasion of Lebanon with their counterparts Agostino Cardinal Casaroli and Archbishop Achille Silvestrini. Unsurprisingly, many of the US players were Catholics - Haig, Casey, and US National Security Adviser William P. Clark Jr. among them.
‍
“They regarded the US-Vatican relationship as a holy alliance: the moral force of the Pope and the teachings of their church combined with their fierce anti-communism and their notion of American democracy,” Carl Bernstein wrote in an article for Time magazine.

The religious approach to intelligence initiated by OSS pioneers Edward Lansdale and spymaster ‘Wild Bill’ Donovan in the 1940s established CIA methods and understanding of the world in the early days of the spy agencies, author Michael Graziano argues. The CIA is still referred to as ‘Catholics In Action’ and the ‘Catholic Intelligence Agency’.

Strikes on Iran will test US cyber strategy abroad, and defenses at home

The federal government’s cyber defense agency is short-staffed, and Tehran is known for its retaliatory cyberattacks.

BY DAVID DIMOLFETTA

CYBERSECURITY REPORTER, NEXTGOV/FCW
FEBRUARY 28, 2026 06:14 PM ET

Coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets are putting renewed focus on how the United States integrates offensive cyber capabilities into the battlespace — and how prepared federal agencies are for retaliation at home.

Iran has shown a tendency to respond to overseas threats with cyber means, from defacing websites to spying on U.S. and allied targets. Tracking such actions and alerting the U.S. government and public is a job of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which has been operating with sharply reduced staffing due to a funding lapse for its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security.

“This is a bad time for Washington’s cyber agency to be operating with limited staff,” said Annie Fixler, director of the Center on Cyber and Technology Innovation at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a national security think tank.

That funding lapse comes after Trump-administration moves shrank CISA’s workforce by about one-third last year and degraded public-private collaboration mechanisms. This “limits the ability of the federal government to provide timely cyber threat information to the private sector,” Fixler said.

In the wake of the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes, American companies could see a “barrage” of low-level attacks like website defacements and distributed denial-of-service attacks, said Fixler. “Iran might also see some limited success against targets that do not have proper cyber hygiene — exposed edge devices with default passwords, for example.”

Other cyber experts said the U.S. should prepare for a mix of distributed denial-of-service campaigns, ransomware and hack-and-leak operations meant to send a message.

“While it’s not operating at the same technical level as China or Russia, Iranian-linked groups have carried out disruptive attacks against U.S. financial institutions, infrastructure providers and private sector companies,” said Tom Pace, a former Marine intelligence specialist and CEO of NetRise, a cybersecurity supply chain firm.

The conflict will likely see a surge in state-sponsored hacking activity, “specifically targeting operational technology and critical infrastructure through the exploitation of internet-facing industrial control systems and vulnerable [programmable logic controller] hardware,” said Brian Harrell, a former CISA official.

“Threat hunters should be working overtime right now. By combining disruptive attacks with psychological operations, Iran will seek to erode public trust in government institutions and project domestic strength during periods of heightened conflict,” he said.

Elisity CEO James Winebrenner echoed that advice. “We should be vigilant in protecting exposed [industrial controls systems] and expect heightened retaliatory activity in the coming days and weeks,” he said. In late 2023, Iran-linked hackers digitally defaced U.S. water treatment equipment.

Tehran may play up the effectiveness and scope of their cyberattacks, said Cynthia Kaiser, a former FBI cybersecurity deputy director who leads the Ransomware Research Center at Halcyon. Industry research has documented these theatrics.

“They’ll turn [an intrusion] into an information operation, and say, ‘Look, we compromised this entire facility,’ even though they compromised just a machine,” Kaiser said.
