Q&A with Dr. Anthony Fauci (C-SPAN 1/8/2015)

Dr. Anthony Fauci Q&A interview on C-SPAN in 2015.

@ 12:27 Mins.
  • LAMB: The Jesuits teach you high school, college, Holy Cross.
  • FAUCI: Right.
  • LAMB: Regis High School in Manhattan. What impact- what does it mean to be taught by Jesuits? We hear about Jesuits all the time.
  • FAUCI: Well, it's a great experience, I have to say. They combine intense intellectualism with discipline, not in the sense of, you know, smacking you around, but intellectual rigor, discipline in how you handle yourself as a person, as a human being. And they have a general motto of-and I think this had a major influence on me and what I did-is the issue of service to others. That's very big.
  • That doesn't mean that people who don't go into public service are doing anything lesser with their lives, but they tend to have a, I wouldn't say a pushing, but a leaning towards something about what you do is public service, either everything you do, which turned out what I did by going into public service, or at least a part of your life. So it was- it was an interesting combination of concern for mankind as well as a good intellectual rigor.
  • LAMB: When did you want to be a doctor? Can you remember the time?
  • FAUCI: I think it was early high school. I'm very interested in people. I'm very much of a people person, and probably, as part of the Jesuit training, which is very steeped in the classics and the humanities.
  • So when I went to Regis High School we took four years of Greek, four years of Latin, a romance language, and ancient history and things like that. And when I went to Holy Cross, which is another Jesuit school, as a college, I took kind of a hybrid pre-med course. It was called- it's almost an oxymoron. It was called "A.B. Greek Classics dash Pre-Med."
  • So you were majoring in the humanities and the classics with a lot of philosophy, but you took enough science to get into medical school. And the idea about when I wanted to become a doctor- I like science, I like discovery, I like the challenges of science, but I also so much liked mankind and the humanities that it was just a natural fit that, where do you put science and people in the same bucket? And to me that was medicine.
  • LAMB: Who was an early mentor?
  • FAUCI: Probably some of the very young Jesuits in Regis High School. In the Jesuit training, it's a long, long training before you become a Jesuit priest. And back then they had what's called scholastics, or people who weren't yet ordained as priests, but they dressed with the garb of a priest and they taught in the high school. And there were a couple of those scholastics who had a major impact on me, just great people, highly intellectual and highly nurturing of you and what you wanted to do.

President Obama Remarks on Poverty

MAY 12, 2015

President Obama participated in a panel discussion on poverty. Panelists also included Harvard University Professor Robert Putnam and American Enterprise Institute President Arthur Brooks. The discussion moderated by the Washington Post's E.J. Dionne.

This event was part of the three-day Catholic-Evangelical Leadership Summit on Overcoming Poverty at Georgetown University. .

Eugene "E.J." Joseph Dionne Jr.

Mr. President, I wanted you to reflect on this religious question. I mean, one of your first salaries was actually paid for by a group of Catholic churches, something -- Cardinal McCarrick knows that, but not a lot of Catholic bishops notice that -- (laughter) -- that you were organizing for a group of South Side churches. You know what faith-based groups can do. And I'd like you to talk about sort of three things at the same time, which is the role of the religious community simply in calling attention to this problem; the issues of how government can cooperate with these groups; and sort of the prophetic role of these ideas for you, where your own reflections on your own faith have led you on these questions.

01:15:06
Barack Obama

Well, first of all, it's true, my first job was funded through the Campaign for Human Development, which was the social justice arm of the Catholic Church. (Applause.) And I think that faith-based groups across the country and around the world understand the centrality and the importance of this issue in a intimate way -- in part because these faith-based organizations are interacting with folks who are struggling and know how good these people are, and know their stories, and it's not just theological, but it's very concrete. They're embedded in communities and they're making a difference in all kinds of ways.

Bill Clinton: ‘Policy Matters’ Despite Being Misunderstood, Distrusted

The Clinton Lectures video

Bill Clinton Gives First of Lecture Series at Georgetown video April 30, 2013

April 30, 2014 – Policymaking today tends to be “dimly understood, often distrusted and disconnected from the consequences of the policy being implemented,” President Bill Clinton (SFS’68) said today in a speech at Georgetown.

The 42nd president of the United States, who delivered the second of his Clinton Lectures at Georgetown talks, said he observed this “most intensely” in regard to the Affordable Care Act.

When a policymaker is a political leader being followed by the press, he said there is a “craving that borders on [addiction] to have a story line,” and once that’s settled, “a craving which borders on blindness to shoehorn every fact, every development, everything that happens into the story line, even if that’s not the story.”

Too Much Cynicism

Clinton, who first welcomed his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to her seat in the university’s historic Gaston Hall to cheers and thunderous applause, also noted he has spent a lifetime “really believing that policy matters.”

“The disagreements are important, but it’s not very helpful to overlay them with too much cynicism and pretend it doesn’t matter, and it’s all just a roll of the dice,” he said.

The Four Ps

Georgetown President John J. DeGioia greets former President Bill Clinton during Wednesday’s lecture in Gaston Hall.

Though some made fun of him while he was president for his attention to details, Clinton said that focus often resulted in sound policies and economic stability.

The Clinton Lectures at Georgetown are designed to explore the people, events, lessons and principles that shaped the Georgetown alumnus’ career in public service.

During the first lecture last April, he said that young people interested in public service should focus on four areas – “people, purpose, policies and politics.”

At the second lecture today, Clinton defended the economic policies he employed that resulted in a balanced budget, a middle-class tax cut and noted the creation of the Children’s Health Insurance Program and other initiatives.

Personal Commitment

The lecture was webcast live with students at the Clinton School of Public Service at the University of Arkansas watching.

Diondra Hicks (C’15) a psychology major in Georgetown College, presented Clinton with questions submitted by students at both universities.

Georgetown President John J. DeGioia introduced the former president.

“All of his accomplishments demonstrate President Clinton’s deep and personal commitment to the power of cooperation…of working together for the betterment of society,” DeGioia said, “a similar commitment that is at the core of the tradition that animates our Georgetown community. Ours is a tradition that asks of us to use our skills and our talents to make an impact in the world.”

America’s Happiest Protestant

Clinton thanked his wife for coming and joked that she hadn’t “had to sit through one of these for ages.”

He also noted that his former Georgetown professor, Rev. Otto Hentz, S.J., was in the audience, and thanked him for reminding him “that if I had been a Catholic I could have been a Jesuit.”

Hentz famously asked a young Bill Clinton in his undergraduate years if he had considered becoming a Jesuit.

Clinton also called himself “America’s happiest Protestant when the new pope took his holy office."

"I’ve been thrilled by that," he said, "and I think all the Jesuits in the world should be proud of him.”

Second Series

This is the second time Clinton has given a series of talks at Georgetown.

In 1991, as the governor of Arkansas and a Democratic candidate for president, he presented three “New Covenant” speeches to students on Responsibility and Rebuilding the American Community, Economic

Change and American Security.

“This is an historic day on our campus,” DeGioia said at last year’s Clinton lecture. “We celebrate the inaugural lecture in a series that we believe will have a deep and meaningful impact not just within our university community but throughout the academy and the world of policy, politics and global affairs.”

C-SPAN Calls for More Transparent Health Care Talks

January 5, 2010 2:25 PM

Posted by Stephanie Condon

(AP)

As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama called for completely transparent health care deliberations and even promised to hold all negotiations on C-SPAN. Now, as the health care debate reaches its final stages, the nonprofit cable company is asking Washington leaders to follow through on that promise.

C-SPAN CEO Brian Lamb sent a letter to congressional leaders last week, asking that they "open all important negotiations, including any conference committee meetings, to electronic media coverage."

"Many of your rank-and-file members, and the nation's editorial pages have all talked about the value of transparent discussions on reforming the nation's health care system," , Lamb said in the letter, which was sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). "Now that the process moves to the critical stage of reconciliation between the Chambers, we respectfully request that you allow the public full access, through television, to legislation that will affect the lives of every single American."

As Lamb notes, "literall hundreds of hours" of committee hearings, debate and meetings have been broadcast on C-SPAN through the health care debate, allowing journalists, bloggers, watchdog groups and citizens to follow the process. Other significant parts of the health care debate, however, have remained behind closed doors, such as Mr. Obama's negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry which resulted in a deal committing the industry to a specific contribution to reform.

CBSNews.com Special Report: Health Care

Now that Democrats have passed a health care bill in both the House and the Senate, they will need to reconcile the two bills. That process could take place through the formal "conference committee" process, or it could happen informally. Either way, there are sure to be important negotiations and meetings taking place among Democratic leaders that remain private.

Lamb said the C-SPAN networks are willing to commit all of the resources necessary to comprehensively cover the upcoming conference committee sessions live.

"We are most willing to employ the latest digital technology to make the cameras, lights and microphones as unobtrusive as possible," he added.

When asked last week about the level of transparency so far in the health care debate, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the legislative process has played out clearly in the hearings and debates that have been aired on C-SPAN.

"I think, quite frankly, people have a pretty good sense of who is battling on behalf of thousands of lobbyists that are trying to protect drugs profits and insurance profits, and who's fighting on behalf of middle-class Americans," he said.

Pressed on the issue again today, Gibbs said he has not seen the C-SPAN letter but that he doesn't think "the American people have lacked for information on what's in these bills," or "the political and policy arguments around people's position."
