My Return to Kinship Kampmeeting

10 July2026

By Loren Seibold | 10 July 2026 |

Back in the late 1980s, I was a new pastor in the San Francisco Bay Area. At a church event I met sociologist Ron Lawson, who was researching a book on Seventh-day Adventists. Ron told us of a still relatively new organization called Kinship, a gathering for gay and lesbian Seventh-day Adventists. (Bisexual, transexual, and intersex people weren’t yet on the category list, though they were surely present in the church.) Kinship’s Kampmeeting (always spelled with a K) was at the Monte Toyon Retreat Center in the Santa Cruz Mountains the next week, Ron said, and would I come and speak to the group?

I did—and I should admit that I was well out of my depth. I tried. But I had just come from being a pastor in rural South Dakota, and though I was liberal in my beliefs, I was inexperienced and unconfident. I wasn’t fully comfortable in my own pastoral role. I was addressing a group of people who I sympathized with, but didn’t really understand.

Although everyone was kind to me, I do remember it as a tense and occasionally angry gathering—and for good reason. Back then, most were young. (The group is older now.) Then there was little Christian fellowship for people who openly identified as L, G, B, T, I, or otherwise Q. Some hoped that they could “come out” and still be Seventh-day Adventists. But most had, by that time, realized that wasn’t going to happen quickly—or possibly ever. A few were church workers who desperately needed reassurance, but were terrified they might be exposed.

The Colin Cook affair—denominational leaders’ continuing support of a gay ex-pastor who sexually abused young men under the cover of changing them into straight people—was very much on their minds. AIDS had emerged just a few years earlier; there had already been fatalities, and everyone knew there were going to be more.

Northern New England Conference Issues Statement on Caribou Campmeeting

August 22, 2024 NewsHound

The Northern Maine Campmeeting was held in Caribou Maine last weekend. Walter Veith and Conrad Vine were the main speakers.

Conrad Vine addressed the issue of liberty of conscience in his presentations. On Friday night he suggested that if the SDA church leadership were to side with federal government vaccine mandates—like they did in 2020-2022—that freedom-loving Seventh-day Adventists had an array of options to consider. The NNEC Conference issued a statement that appears to be in response to Vine outlining these ‘options’.

As mentioned, in 2020-2022 conventional medicine Adventists, GC leadership, a partisan PARL and almost all progressive Adventists aligned with the federal vaccine mandate.

Opposing the mandate was the Southern Baptist Theological seminary and a few others. They were vindicated when the Supreme Court ruled that the Biden mandate was not constitutional. This vindication could have been ours, had the aforementioned SDA entities demonstrated a commitment to bodily autonomy & liberty and the courage to follow our inspired health counsels. They didn’t.

They also demonstrated no compassion to thousands of Adventists whose consciences and livelihoods were violated by progressive autocrats during Pestilence-19.

Pastor shares his life-changing story at Seventh-day Adventist Church camp meeting

Douglas E. Batchelor turned to Christianity after years as a rebellious child.

Written by Bruce Posten
Tilden Township, PA —

Earlier this week, on their way to the annual camp meeting of the Pennsylvania Conference of Seventh-day Adventist Church in Tilden Township, Douglas E. Batchelor and his wife, Karen, flew from the West Coast to Philadelphia, a bit weary and with their luggage yet to be united with them.

While a bit disappointed with airline foul-ups, Batchelor, 61, pastor, Christian author, evangelist speaker and leader of a worldwide ministry, seemed resigned and understanding, not angry.

He wasn't a man venting spleen publicly (think road rage) at those deemed responsible for his plight and lateness, evoking what is often seen as frustration to modern-day systematic mishaps that just seem to happen, brushed aside as nobody's fault.

"I strive to be a Christian about it," he said, patiently being interviewed in the chapel at Blue Mountain Academy, site of the camp meeting, and less than two hours before his scheduled speaking engagement in the high school auditorium.

He gave generously of his time, yet he obviously needed to freshen up, change and get ready for his presentation.

Batchelor of Granite Bay, a suburb of Sacramento, Calif., is senior pastor at Granite Bay Church and the president of Amazing Facts ministry, which involves a television program, "Amazing Facts Presents," and the "Bible Answers Live," a radio broadcast.

2014 Kinship Kampmeeting

23 July 2014 | HERB MONTGOMERY

Kinship Kampmeeting was held in Atlanta, GA this year from July 15-19. Their mission is to "Provide a safe spiritual and social community to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender & intersex current and former Seventh-day Adventists around the world."
“If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.”—Jesus (Matthew 12.7)

Someone once said, “The truth as it is in Jesus can be experienced, but never explained.” How do you describe in words what someone experiences at a Kinship Kampmeeting?

This summer, I was privileged and humbled to be a part of 2014’s lineup of Kampmeeting speakers. Besides me were Wendy Gritter (author of Generous Spaciousness), Todd Leonard (pastor of the Glendale City Seventh-day Adventist Church) and Eliel Cruz (president of Intercollegiate Adventist Gay-Straight Alliance Coalition).

When I was first invited to be a speaker at the Kinship Kampmeeting, I must confess, I was bit naive. I envisioned that I would, within my four presentations, share a Girardian retelling of the Jesus narrative that would offer hope for those who are being scapegoated religiously, politically, economically and socially as a result of their orientation. What I didn’t realize is that I was about to have my world turned upside down as I encountered something I had never experienced. For two decades now, I have been traveling from place to place within Adventism, and never before have I witnessed an environment that involved such healing authenticity, such love for Jesus (as well as one another) and such wrestling with Jesus as I experienced being among this group of Christian brothers and sisters who identify also as LGBTIQ (or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer; “alphabet people.”)

I came face to face with countless stories of those who had been forced into deep introspection as they wrestled, sometimes alone, with the collision of their own sexuality and the hetero-normative faith many had been raised in. To be honest, some had navigated the journey beautifully, others had become casualties, and others were still on that journey. But what I found breathtakingly beautiful was that I was encountering for the first time within Adventism a safe place for all, regardless of where on this journey they found themselves today.

On Friday night, as we came together around a shared table upon which were the emblems of our Jesus who was broken and spilled out as He stood in solidarity with the oppressed in every generation, something inside of me changed forever. I had gone there thinking I would share with them, but what I discovered was a group that had recaptured what Jesus called the Kingdom, as well as a group of people who are particularly gifted because of their experiences to teach the rest of the Church what the Kingdom really looks like.

I had so many beautiful experiences, and space here does not permit me to recount them all…but I will share just one. At the end of my week, a dear, dear sister, whom I would later discover had been an agnostic for most of the last fifty years as a result of hetero-hierarchical faith, walked up to my daughter, who was standing beside me. She pointed at my daughter sternly and said, “You be careful hanging around that man right there,” then pointed at me.

My daughter innocently asked, “Why?”

“He’s dangerous!” she said.

My daughter was puzzled. “Dangerous?”

My new friend hung her head and said quietly, “Yes, dangerous. He can make even an old agnostic begin to have the courage to believe once again.”

I walked away from this experience deeply and profoundly affected. On the long journey home, I came to the inescapable conclusion that if Jesus were speaking at a Kinship Kampmeeting this past summer, he would have preached, “Blessed are those who are gay, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn as result of how they are treated for identifying as lesbian, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the “erased” bisexuals, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who identify as transgender, who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be filled. Blessed are those who identify as intersex, yet show mercy to their oppressors, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, regardless of whether they are mostly straight or mostly queer, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, wherever they land on the spectrum, for they will be called children of God. And lastly, blessed are those, regardless of their sex/gender/orientation, who are persecuted because of their call for justice, equality and mercy, for theirs is the Kingdom.”

May we all have the courage to listen to our LGBTIQ brothers and sisters in Jesus. We all have so much still to learn…till the only world that remains is a world where Christ’s love reigns.

(The four presentations I gave at this event will be on Renewed Heart Ministries’ website shortly.)

Eternal Gospel Ministry - 2009 Fall Camp Meeting

Tuskahoma, Oklahoma
2009 Fall Camp Meeting
Date: October 9, 10, 11, 2009

Fall Camp Meeting 2009 (July/August 2009)

As we approach the end of summer we want to remind you of our Oklahoma Camp Meeting 2009 this autumn. It would do us good to recall the blessings, the purposes, and objectives of these gatherings.

The Spirit of prophecy has given us divine counsel on the matter of attending camp meeting. “It is important that the members of our churches should attend our camp meetings. The enemies of truth are many; and because our numbers are few, we should present as strong a front as possible. Individually you need the benefits of the meeting, and God calls upon you to number one in the ranks of truth...Strengthen the meeting all you possibly can by being present with your families. Put forth extra exertion to attend the gathering of God’s people.” Testimonies, Vol. 6, pp. 38, 39.

Camp meeting is a time for preaching, fellowship, and personal soul-searching. Notice what is the focus for the theme of camp meeting: “The very first and most important thing is to melt and subdue the soul by presenting our Lord Jesus Christ as the sin-pardoning savior. Never should a sermon be preached, or a Bible instruction in any line be given, without pointing the hearers to the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world (John 1:29).” Ibid. pp. 53, 54.

These words apply to the needs of all who attend camp meeting. They are to be evangelistic. We must hear the important truths for this time. They are also to be a place for revival and reformation as well.

The speakers for the October camp meeting will include: Dr. Sudhir Pandit, MD, Pastor Raphael Perez, Pastor Stephen Lewis, and Elder Charles Gordon.
