Archbishop of the U.S. military says Catholic soldiers should not serve on firing squad

Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who oversees the Catholic Church's pastoral services to Catholics in the U.S. military, is condemning the proposed livestream of the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan.

Broglio, in a statement Monday, also stipulated that any Catholic soldier assigned to the U.S. Army firing squad should ask to be excused from that duty, which he described as contrary to the teachings of the church. He joins other Catholic leaders in speaking out against the death penalty and the livestream plans.

Hasan, an Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people in 2009 at Fort Hood in Texas, is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on Dec. 3.

Broglio recalled that he presided over the funeral of Michael Grant Cahill, the only civilian killed in that attack.

The crime committed by Hasan "was heinous, but does exposing the public to his execution serve any purpose?" Broglio asked.

"The US military generally enjoys a good reputation in the world," Broglio added. "Is there really a value to throwing them in the same boat with terrorists by broadcasting the image of the execution of a man in a wheelchair to the whole world?"

President Donald Trump promoted a pastor’s biblical defense of livestreaming Fort Hood mass shooter Nidal Hasan’s execution on Saturday, even as the president said he would personally decide whether the controversial broadcast goes ahead.

Trump reposted a report featuring Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of First Baptist Dallas and a longtime Trump ally, who argued that the public execution would demonstrate the sanctity of human life.

The post sharpened a divide among religious leaders after Pope Leo XIV reiterated the Catholic Church’s opposition to capital punishment and the head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops directly condemned the proposed livestream.

It also came as opposition widened among Democratic lawmakers and some Republicans who support executing Hasan but oppose livestreaming it.

Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment on Saturday.

Ocasio-Cortez And Pressley's Controversial Claims On 'Modern-Day Lynchings' Contradict Police Reports

Far-left Democratic Representatives Ayanna Pressley and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are amplifying a narrative of “modern-day lynchings” of black Americans that is starkly at odds with the facts established by law enforcement in nearly every case they cite.

As reported by The Post Millennial, the two members of the progressive “Squad” have seized on a series of tragic deaths in which black individuals were found hanging from trees and portrayed them as racially motivated killings, despite police and medical findings that overwhelmingly point to suicide. Their rhetoric, which invokes the darkest chapters of American history, has been used to demand federal intervention and a congressional investigation, even though authorities have found no evidence of racial animus in these incidents.

Across the country in 2026, several black individuals have been discovered dead in trees, with local investigations consistently concluding that the deaths were self-inflicted and involved no foul play. Nonetheless, Ocasio-Cortez and Pressley publicly described these cases as “lynchings” and insisted that Congress must step in, framing the incidents as part of a broader campaign of racial terror.

Pressley escalated the language dramatically, declaring, "Black folks are being found hanged in America. This is a national crisis and we CANNOT stand by while strange fruit hangs from trees across the country. We're demanding a federal investigation NOW so we can stop modern-day lynchings." Her invocation of “strange fruit” — a direct reference to the infamous song about Jim Crow-era lynchings — appears designed to stir public outrage, even as investigators on the ground report no such pattern of racist violence.

Ocasio-Cortez echoed and amplified Pressley’s claims, stating, "This year, there have already been 10 reported hangings of Black people in the U.S. I’m proud to have signed onto @RepPressley‘s letter to address these widespread modern-day lynchings and put a stop to this racial terror." By framing these tragedies as “widespread modern-day lynchings,” she suggested an organized campaign of racial killings, a claim that is not supported by the official findings in the cases highlighted by activists and sympathetic media.

In Cobb County, Georgia, 21-year-old Kyle Bassinga was found hanging in March, and police determined there was no foul play and that he was alone at the time of his death, according to CBS News. In Charlotte, North Carolina, 16-year-old Juliana Umba Nzita was discovered hanging from a tree on church property in May, and investigators ruled her death a suicide, WBTV reported.

A pastor in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains was executed extrajudicially along with six other people after members of an armed faction arrested him at his church residence in the town of Heban.

The Rev. Adil Idris Jangoul, of the Sudanese Episcopal Church, was detained on July 23 inside the church compound in Heban’s Erie neighborhood, where he lived, the religious freedom advocacy group Christian Solidarity Worldwide reported this week.

Members of the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement-North, or SPLM/N, an armed group in the region, seized his money and arrested him without incident.

However, his body was later found on a road alongside those of six other people, all from the Otoro ethnic group. All seven had been killed in extrajudicial executions.

A related attack struck Heban the same day. Members of the Otoro ethnic group, the same community whose members had been killed alongside Jangoul, carried out the raid, killing at least 10 people and seizing more than 20 hostages, among them children, CSW said.

One hostage was the Rev. Yakoub Brahim Tia. He once served as general secretary of the Sudanese Church of Christ and belongs to the Shawaya ethnic group. Six of his relatives were also seized.

All the hostages were released unharmed on July 28, after ministers from several ethnic communities appealed for their freedom.

US brings back firing squads to deter ‘barbaric crimes’

The Justice Department has also reintroduced lethal injections to ‘deliver justice’ for victims and their families. There are three inmates on federal death row

The US Justice Department has said it is reintroducing firing squads and readopting the lethal injection as part of an effort to strengthen the federal death penalty.

President Trump reintroduced federal executions during his first term in office from 2017 to 2021, after what had been a pause of almost two decades.

President Biden then implemented a death-penalty moratorium and before leaving office commuted the sentences of 37 of 40 death-row inmates to life without parole.

A young boy with a British accent has threatened the UK with new atrocities in a depraved ISIS execution video in which five spies are killed.

Dressed in military fatigues and a black bandanna bearing the white mark of ISIS, he pointed to the distance and declared: 'We will kill kuffar [non believers] over there.'

In the ten minute long propaganda video, five shackled men dressed in orange jumpsuits 'confessed' to spying for British security services.

One of the masked executioners, who spoke in a clear British accent, threatened David Cameron before killing the unarmed prisoners.

Justice Sotomayor compares the death penalty drug to 'being burned at the stake'

DEATH PENALTY

In a dissent from Monday's Supreme Court ruling that upheld the use of a death penalty drug, Justice Sonia Sotomayor likened the drug to methods of medieval torture, including the burning of heretics at the stake and the slow torturing of people to death. The lethal injection drug that Sotomayor railed against has been used in previous botched executions, including the 2014 execution of Oklahoma death-row inmate Clayton Lockett, which took 43 minutes and saw him writhing in pain. Sotomayor argued that the drug violates the Eighth Amendment's prohibition against "cruel and unusual punishment."

"Under the court's new rule, it would not matter whether the state intended to use midazolam, or instead to have petitioners drawn and quartered, slowly tortured to death, or actually burned at the stake," Sotomayor wrote in her dissent. Becca Stanek
