Mamdani advisor’s secret Cuba diary exposes anti-US plot, luxe trip

By David Spector
Published Oct. 11, 2026, 5:13 a.m. ET

A friend and advisor to socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met with the president of Cuba during a luxe trip to the communist nation — where they conspired to subvert US foreign policy, according to a since-deleted travel diary obtained by The Post.

Danny Valdez, who hosted a fundraiser for Mamdani’s mayoral campaign in 2025, traveled to Cuba with a delegation from the DSA International Committee from Oct. 22 to Oct. 26, 2023, according to the Nov. 9, 2023 blog post, entitled “The Cuba Diaries.”

The delegation met with President Miguel Diaz-Canel on the third day of the trip with the purpose of partnering to end the US embargo, in place since 1962, three years after Fidel Castro imposed a communist dictatorship on the island, he recalled.

DSA national co-chair Ashik Siddique and Valdez are seen posing in a group photo with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel.Obtained by the NY Post

“It was genuinely a big accomplishment for our delegation that this meeting took place. It was a sign that the Cuban government took our organization seriously and saw us as potential partners in the work of ending the US blockade,” Valdez wrote.

During the meeting, the Cuban president whined about the US-imposed blockade.

“No other country has to operate under such conditions. Vietnam and China are not under blockade, and are able to develop their approach to socialism,” Diaz-Canel said, according to Valdez.

Democrats can't shake their DSA problem | Opinion

Ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, the Democratic Party has a stark choice: Stay a mainstream liberal coalition or lean hard into democratic socialism.

To paraphrase a famous 2016 line about the "alternative right": A specter is haunting the dinner events, fundraisers and think tanks of the Democratic Party – the specter of the Democratic Socialists of America.

A quick saunter over to the DSA website (whose federal donation page is titled "Socialist Cash Takes Out Capitalist Trash") shows the left-of-Foucault organization has run or strongly endorsed nearly 200 candidates so far in 2026. As of Sept. 22, DSA's election tracker claimed 67 wins against 60 losses. Sixty-four other races, including many of the biggest, remain undecided.

While the full DSA slate includes contenders for some mundane local jobs ("Ramsey County Commissioner, Minnesota"), multiple candidates have already become familiar names.

In New York City, pro-Palestinian activist Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat in a Democratic primary almost certain to determine who holds his House seat. Given Espaillat's status as chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, it's fair to call this – as Politico put it – "a massive victory for the Democratic Socialists of America and Mayor Zohran Mamdani," one that "cements the DSA ... as one of the city's most potent political forces."

We Won’t Get Europe with the Democratic Socialists of America

And that's what they're counting on.

Vanessa Mares
Sep 15, 2026

A commenter on one of my recent YouTube videos said the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are “doing nothing but trying to resurrect social democracy.”

For many Americans that may read as benign.

But what is social democracy? And if the DSA is only trying to resurrect it in the U.S., does that mean people against the DSA platform are just fear-mongering?

After all, social democracy is what’s popular in Europe.

Many Americans may not know that European-style of governance by the name “social democracy,” but now is the most critical time to get to know it.

Because conflating it with democratic socialism, is not only false, but playing with fire.
But First, How Did We Get Here?

For over 20 years now, social media has connected people from all over the planet.

Suddenly, what was happening in one place could be made visible in the palm of your hand, on the other side of the world.

And when that happened, millennials priorities shifted.

We saw the rise of what is known as the experience economy, where millennials began prioritizing experience and travel over physical things.

Around that time, came the rise in creator economies and cohorts of Americans and Europeans abroad turning their lives into escapism content for the American audience.

Their content would circle around praising the healthcare system, free education, the pace of life, food, etc.,— all to high engagement among Americans.

Many of these influencers rarely posted anything negative in their experiences abroad, likely because it didn’t perform as well.

As an American that lives in Europe, and has for many years now, I can state with certainty it’s not all roses like the influencers make it seem.

There’s nuance in every experience, yet this is rarely shown in escapism content.

So, it’s only natural that young Americans getting these European utopias on their screens everyday want what Europe has.

Any political strategist could tell you, this is a powerful entry point— which is exactly how the DSA are strategizing it.

In 2021, Zohran Mamdani virtually attended a 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) conference and said as much himself, in his own words.

I clipped the most revealing part of this strategy as he laid it out, for you below.

The ‘new era’ of Latino socialists in New York: ‘If the Democratic Party wants to lead, it must create a solution to the immigration problem’

Several of these politicians have joined the call to abolish ICE and to demand immigration reform that protects undocumented people in the US

Claire Valdéz, Diana Moreno and Darializa Ávila Chevalier.GETTY / EL PAÍS

CARLA GLORIA COLOMÉ
New York - AUG 31, 2026 - 07:41 EDT

On the cover of issue number 304 of The Indypendent, a “free and progressive” paper printed on gray stock that New Yorkers pick up in libraries, laundromats, conference rooms and subway stations, Claire Valdez and Darializa Ávila Chevalier appeared back to back, both with broad smiles, in those June days when Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed them in the state Democratic primaries. When they finally became the nominees for the November congressional elections, Valdez and Chevalier grabbed the issue of The Indypendent, recreated their poses from the cover in person—victorious and amazed that the future had been sketched out for them in advance. One striking detail: both were Latina, the former of Mexican roots; the latter a daughter of Dominican parents. Both alternated Spanish and English on the campaign trail, self-identify as socialists, and worry about the things that concern people like themselves these days: that immigration enforcement might take a neighbor, or that paychecks won’t stretch to the end of the month.

Shortly after the primaries, the Instagram page DSA Latinos Socialistas invited everyone to a conversation where they would sell Venezuelan empanadas and, at the same time, raise funds to help Venezuelans who survived the earthquakes. Four panelists were scheduled for the talk: Ecuadorian Diana Moreno, who had filled Mamdani’s vacated seat as state assembly member for Queens’s 36th District; Illapa Sairitupac, the son of indigenous Peruvian immigrants whom Mamdani also backed and who won the Democratic primary for Assembly District 65; Claire Valdez, running for the 7th Congressional District seat; and Darializa Ávila Chevalier, the candidate for the 13th. A poster in large letters read: “Latina socialist politics in New York: a new era.” They were coining the idea that times had changed.

They were all fresh faces, people in their thirties; none yet had the look or cadence of a conventional politician. They came from roles as community organizers, artists, PhD students, political science graduates and social workers. Politics had not yet left its mark on them, they had not promised anything they hadn’t delivered, and so people went out to vote for them to get rid of the old establishment players. They were part of—and also a product of—the aura Mamdani left in an election that revived the American left, and therefore shared what, as a generation and as members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), others also defended: rejecting any money from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), condemning the genocide in Gaza, and pushing for more affordable cities.

But one thing set Latino politicians apart from their colleagues: when they talked about abolishing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, or ICE, they did not see the idea only as a necessary political stance but as the possibility of ending an agency that detains and deports migrants; migrants were, and are, their own families, friends or neighbors. “At parties or at the dinner table we talked about how much it costs to change immigration status, whether the neighbor was having trouble with immigration authorities. That’s how politics was talked about in my house,” Chevalier told EL PAÍS, recalling the days when she was still a girl born in Miami.

When these candidates talk about labor rights, they do so after having been employed and paid very little themselves: “I’ve had to work since I was 14,” Valdez says; she grew up in Lubbock, in northwest Texas. “I worked in fast-food restaurants and supermarkets. Once, at a Taco Bell, I messed up an order and my manager put those tacos in front of my face and said: you just wasted seven dollars of our product. He threw them in the trash in a very dramatic way to make me feel bad. I was paid $7.25 an hour, so those three tacos were worth an hour of my life.”

These new Latino politicians come from families that invested time and money so their children could study; they later moved, came to New York, and are now holding or seeking federal or state office. It’s not that they were the first Latinos in local or national politics: by then there were already names like Tiffany Cabán, Alexa Avilés, Marcela Mitaynes, Jessica González-Rojas, Kristen González, and the prominent figure Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but more were joining at a moment they described as very particular.

In Latin America, Democratic Socialists Are the Toast of the Party

The success of progressive candidates in the United States is inspiring leftists abroad struggling under pressure from the Trump administration and its allies.

Left-wing politicians from across the Western Hemisphere gathered in Uruguay this past weekend to lick their wounds from a string of election losses and strategize on how to counter growing aggression from the Trump administration.

There were ex-presidents and expected presidential contenders, national lawmakers and campaign strategists, best-selling authors and protest leaders. But perhaps the toast of the weekend — viewed by the group as the inspiration for a path forward — were the democratic socialists from the United States, fresh off their primary victories.

Darializa Avila Chevalier is a democratic socialist and candidate for the House in New York’s 13th Congressional District.

Those candidates — Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez of New York, Chris Rabb of Pennsylvania and Dr. Adam Hamawy of New Jersey — were all special guests at the Panamerican Congress in Montevideo, an annual meeting of leftist political leaders from across the Americas. (Dr. Hamawy identifies as progressive but not democratic socialist.)

They received a standing ovation, were asked for selfies and were repeatedly cited by fellow attendees as examples on how the left can succeed in the current political moment.

Claire Valdez, a democratic socialist assemblywoman and close ally of Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York, is a candidate for the House in the city’s 13th Congressional District.

Their victories “give us hope that if this can be fought from within, it can also be fought from the outside,” said Gabriel Boric, the former president of Chile, who was succeeded in March by a hard-right politician aligned with President Trump.

Mr. Boric, 40, a former protest leader, said the left had been failing to make the case to the working class that it was best positioned to help them, but the democratic socialists in the United States were showing they could.

“There is a tendency in our movement to constantly talk about the right and all the evils it represents, instead of convincing and giving hope to the people,” he said in an interview. “Now that debate is happening in the United States.”

Some migrants hate America on arrival

Story by Simon Hankinson, Washington Examiner

Some migrants hate America on arrival

In 1932, the French newspaper La Liberte (rather ungratefully) wrote that “Americans are the only race which passed directly from barbarism to decadence without knowing civilization.”

Today, a substantial subset of immigrants passes from hating America abroad to hating it from within, without any intervening period of loving this great country. That’s bad news.

America’s early colonists, settlers, and immigrants had escaped penury, tyranny, and persecution back home and were grateful to be here. But there is a cohort in the current generation of immigrants who arrive loathing our capitalist democracy and vowing to destroy it.

Actor Robert DeNiro recently said he can’t love America when Trump is president. Really? I never stopped loving America, even when Joe Biden was allowing millions of illegal immigrants to enter our country, suppressing free speech, and governing incompetently.

I came here in the bicentennial year of 1976. The whole country was celebrating and recovering national pride after a decade of domestic division and failure in Vietnam. Notably, the all-time lowest percentage of foreign-born Americans was in 1970, at 4.7%. Today, it’s over 15%.

Some young people think their country is the source of all evil and should be destroyed. Capitalism, the engine of prosperity that built prosperity unimaginable to our founders, is suspect to them. They envy wealth creators rather than wanting to emulate them.

That some of our own kids are Gaza-gazing socialists is sad but not surprising, given the leftist dominance of teachers from kindergarten to college. What’s more aggravating is the people who arrive here already trashing us and trying to change us into the very thing they left to escape.

A few of these America-lasters are from Europe. Supercilious English talk-show host John Oliver comes to mind. His rant about New College Florida, an institution nearly destroyed by woke ideologues but resurrected under Gov. Ron DeSantis, sums up his leftist worldview.

How Zohran Mamdani & Socialist Democrats are Taking Over America

How Zohran Mamdani & Socialist Democrats are Taking Over America

The Washington Times

Jul 24, 2026

The Washington Times reporter Susan Ferrechio takes a look at everything democratic socialists are doing to take over American politics, from Zohran Mamdani's NYC's rent freezes to the luxury tax proposed by Bernie Sanders. Can a movement built on protest actually govern? With the biggest DSA bloc in Congress history taking office this January, the stakes have never been higher.

The DSA Wants to Abolish America

We should, in fact, be ‘scared’ by Megan Romer and her ilk.

I understand that it is considered déclassé to participate in what the self-consciously serious among us have termed the new “Red Scare.” Well, okay then: déclassé it is. There is virtue in calling things by their names, and the appropriate name for the Democratic Socialists of America is “red.” They are communists. They are Jacobins. They are wreckers and despoilers and iconoclasts, who, if left unchecked, would wipe the United States from the face of this earth. To be “scared” by such figures is not only rational, it is imperative.

Asked on television by Fox News host Shannon Bream to give a thumbs up or thumbs down to each of our civilizational building blocks, the co-chair of the DSA, Megan Romer, casually dismissed each in turn:

Jesus would not have endorsed the Democratic Socialists of America | Opinion

Peter Crabb
Wed, July 15, 2026 at 6:00 AM EDT

Peter Crabb

In the same year that Americans are celebrating the Declaration of Independence and the principles of liberty found there, members of the Democratic Socialists of America are making political gains.

At my institution and in churches around the country, Christians are revisiting an old question: Was Jesus the first socialist? The idea is appealing to many of my students and fellow followers of Jesus.

Our Lord's emphasis on helping the poor and the first disciples' sharing of resources in the book of Acts suggests a natural alignment with the tenets of socialism. However, discussions around these teachings ignore the central characteristics of socialism; that is, the use of force.

Economic studies of government laws and policies always seek to distinguish between the "seen" and the "unseen." Economists ask both the question of what the immediate effects of a government policy will be but also ask what the likely unintended consequences are of the same.

What is seen in Jesus's teaching is a call to radical generosity. What is unseen by many readers of this teaching is that the call was always directed at the individual's heart, not the Roman authority or tax collector. Socialism is defined by the concentration of power to forcibly achieve a redistribution of wealth. Socialist policies are not voluntary but rather coercive, resulting from a monopoly power the government holds over the use of force.

There is no evidence that Jesus endorsed the forcible redistribution of wealth by political authorities. When confronted with a question about the distribution of a family's wealth, Jesus replied by asking who appointed him a judge or arbiter and instead cautioned against envy (Luke 12).

Cynthia Nixon’s "wife" gets $200k city gig after ‘Sex and the City’ star’s Mamdani endorsement

Cynthia Nixon’s wife gets $200k city gig after ‘Sex and the City’ star’s Mamdani endorsement

Story by David Spector

The Mamdani patronage machine has hired the wife of lefty actress Cynthia Nixon as an educrat making $203,500 a year, The Post has learned.

Christine Marinoni is working as the chief of mass engagement at the Family and Community Empowerment (FACE) office at the Department of Education, according to a well-placed DOE source.

The DOE source said this was Mamdani’s reward to the former “Sex and the City” star after she endorsed him during the mayoral primary.

Nixon held a fundraiser for Mamdani in March 2025 and raised over $200,000 for the socialist mayoral upstart.

“So thrilled to host a fundraiser for the incredible Zohran Mamdani whose clear message & ambitious plan for a more affordable NYC is exactly what we need right now,” she posted on Instagram at the time beside a picture of her and Mamdani standing together grinning ear to ear.

The hire is already drawing sharp comparisons to New York’s most notorious political machine.

“It’s painfully fitting that inside Tweed Courthouse, a DSA machine reminiscent of Tammany Hall is handing taxpayer-funded jobs to the well-connected spouses of multimillionaire celebrities,” another source, a City Hall insider, said.

When reached for comment, Nixon denied that her wife was rehired by the DOE for political reasons, and declined to speak further. Marinoni could not be reached for comment.

Marinoni previously worked as special assistant to the chancellor during the de Blasio administration and made $131,708, according to public data.
