Churches Strike Blow to Trump Admin in Fight Over ICE Raids

A federal appeals court has allowed a coalition of religious organizations to pursue its challenge to the Trump administration’s decision to lift restrictions on immigration enforcement at houses of worship.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled 2-1 Tuesday that the religious organizations had sufficiently demonstrated standing at this stage of the case, reversing a lower court decision that found the threat of enforcement was not sufficiently imminent. U.S. Circuit Judge Florence Pan, a Biden appointee, joined by U.S. Circuit Judge Robert Wilkins, an Obama appointee, wrote the majority opinion. The case was sent back to U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich, a Trump appointee, to reconsider the request for a preliminary injunction. U.S. Circuit Judge Neomi Rao, a Trump appointee, dissented.

The ruling does not decide whether the administration’s policy is lawful, nor does it prohibit ICE from carrying out enforcement actions at churches.

What to Know About ICE Arrests at Churches and Schools

The legal disputes follow the administration’s elimination of protections that had generally discouraged immigration arrests and other enforcement activity at sensitive locations.

Religious organizations challenging the change say immigration enforcement in and around churches can deter some people from attending worship services and participating in ministries. The administration has argued that immigration officers should retain discretion to enforce federal law rather than be governed by categorical restrictions on particular locations.

US can deport the leader of Wisconsin’s largest mosque on national security grounds, judge rules

CHICAGO (AP) — The U.S. can deport the leader of Wisconsin’s largest mosque — an outspoken advocate of Palestinian rights — on the grounds that he is a threat to national security, an immigration judge ruled Wednesday.

Salah Sarsour was detained in Milwaukee in March by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A federal judge ordered Sarsour’s release in June, saying he raised a “substantial” claim that the Trump administration was targeting him for speaking out against Israel and advocating for Palestinian rights.

Sarsour called the ruling “deeply disappointing,” but said he intends to appeal.

“I will continue fighting to defend the right to free speech and to stay in the country I have called home for more than three decades,” Sarsour said in a statement.

Government attorneys say Sarsour’s decades-old convictions in Israel make him a threat to national security and accuse him of lying on his green card application and falsely claiming citizenship to vote. Judge Jayme Salinardi, with the Chicago Immigration Court, found him removable on foreign policy grounds but tossed out the government’s claim that Sarsour lied to immigration authorities.

“All illegal aliens receive due process,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement. “If a judge finds an illegal alien has no right to be in this country, we are going to remove them. Period.”

Sarsour says his life will be at risk if he is deported to the West Bank

Sarsour, who was born in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, was imprisoned in Israel in 1988 after being convicted of throwing stones at Israeli military personnel. DHS has said he was also convicted of throwing a Molotov cocktail. His defense team says he was accused of that but not convicted. In 1995, he was convicted of attempting to possess weapons. Sarsour denies committing those crimes and his attorneys say he was tortured and coerced into confessing in both instances.

Sarsour, the president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, does not have a criminal record in the U.S., where he has lived since 1993. His attorneys say the U.S. government has known about Sarsour’s convictions in Israel since he arrived.

Deportation to the West Bank “means the end of my life,” Sarsour told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

One of his attorneys, Patrick Taurel, said Sarsour’s treatment by Israeli authorities is “probably a good indicator of what awaits him” if he is deported.

Adventist Pastor Detained by ICE at Houston Airport

12August2026

HOUSTON, TX — A Houston-area Seventh-day Adventist pastor was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents while traveling with his wife to New York for a few days of vacation, according to reporting by Aidari Riera for Telemundo Houston.

Pastor Luis Morales, a father of two daughters and pastor of four Adventist congregations in the Houston area, was detained at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on August 7, according to his wife, Karina Morales.

The couple had just entered the airport when, according to Karina, two ICE agents approached them and called Morales by name.

“We have taken maybe six steps; it was really a short distance when some people spoke to us… ‘Mr. Luis,’ when they referred to my husband by name, we stopped right there. Turns out, they were two ICE agents. First thing one of the officials did was show us his ICE badge,” Karina said (translated from Spanish).

The encounter happened quickly. Karina said she handed her husband’s blood pressure medication to one of the officers and has not seen him since.

“It was so fast that, when we arrived, I told my daughter, ‘My love, we’re here. We have arrived at the airport.’ And the second message I sent to my daughter was to tell her, ‘Daddy just got arrested,’” she said.

Alleged Ringleader of UFC Terrorist Plot is a Mexican Illegal Alien

Release Date: June 18, 2026

This illegal alien was granted DACA by the Obama Administration

WASHINGTON – The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released the following statement announcing that the suspected ringleader of the failed terrorist plot against UFC Freedom 250 is a Mexican illegal alien who overstayed a B2 visitor visa.

According to local reporting, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested Abraham Hermosillo Alvarez, a Mexican illegal alien, in Omaha, Nebraska on June 14, for his alleged involvement in the plot to carry out a mass-casualty attack against government officials and other attendees at Sunday’s event at the White House. Four other co-conspirators were arrested over the weekend in Ohio, Missouri, and California.

On June 16, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced federal charges for the five suspects, including Alvarez, who went by the alias “Shepherd.” The FBI assessed that Alvarez was responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the planned attack. Alvarez detailed the plot in an encrypted group chat, including the planned use of “counter sniper(s) and drones,” with the explicit intention of being “as deadly as we can get.”

Alvarez and his co-conspirators face federal charges of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit violence on White House grounds. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer for Alvarez.

“This illegal alien from Mexico should never have been allowed in our country. He was the ringleader of a failed terror attack targeting UFC Freedom 250 at the White House,” said Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis. “He and his co-conspirators now face charges of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit violence on White House grounds. He will face justice and swiftly be removed from our country.”

Alvarez entered the United States on a B2 visitor visa and failed to depart before it expired in December 2001. The Obama Administration granted him Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in 2014.

Recent chronology of New Jersey State Police at Delaney Hall Detention Center

New Jersey State Police officially took over public safety operations outside Newark's Delaney Hall immigration detention center on Friday afternoon, May 29, 2026. [1, 2]

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and Attorney General Jennifer Davenport ordered the state police deployment to de-escalate tensions and replace federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Prior to this, ICE agents had been involved in volatile, multi-day standoffs with demonstrators protesting a mass hunger strike inside the facility. [1, 2, 3]

Timeline of State Police Involvement

●Thursday Night, May 28, 2026: Initial state police presence began minimally with a few vehicles directing traffic near the facility. [1]

●Friday, May 29, 2026: State police officially relieved federal ICE agents. Troopers constructed a designated, barricaded "protest zone" to separate demonstrators from the facility's main gates. [1, 2, 3]

●Friday Night, May 29, 2026: The New Jersey State Police Public Safety Response Team clashed with protesters while attempting to clear a path for vehicles. Troopers in full riot gear issued dispersal orders and deployed tear gas, flash-bang grenades, and rubber bullets to push crowds back. Six demonstrators were arrested. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

●Saturday Night, May 30, 2026: Clashes escalated further. State police used horses, riot shields, and physical barriers to repel protesters who reportedly charged police lines, threw projectiles, and lit tires on fire. Three additional arrests were made. [1, 2, 3, 4]

●Sunday Night, May 31, 2026: Following a mandatory 9:00 PM curfew enacted by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, state police and local authorities moved in to clear the area. Troopers utilized a crowd-control tactic known as "kettling" to surround and arrest remaining curfew violators, sweeping up several credentialed journalists in the process. [1, 2]

●Monday, June 1, 2026: State police handed primary command over to the Newark Police Department. Officers set up a strict perimeter blocking activists and media at the intersection of Doremus Avenue and Wilson Avenue, roughly half a mile from the facility. [1, 2]

Markwayne Mullin tells ICE hunger-strikers who want 'ethnic food' to 'go back to their country'

Story by Peter Rubinstein • 11h

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin channeled the same anti-immigrant rhetoric as Trump on Wednesday, claiming that the New Jersey ICE facility detainees on hunger strike are only doing so because they want "ethnic food."

"There was only a handful of individuals that was refusing to eat because they want their ethnic group, or their ethnic-right food. Well, they can go back to their country and get whatever food they want," Mullin said during a televised Cabinet meeting. “The fact is, we’re giving them the calories they want. This isn’t Holiday Inn.”

His comments came after Democratic members of Congress who visited Delaney Hall in Newark said detainees are being given small portions of food that "very often" contain maggots. U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat described the conditions as "inhumane" and vowed to shut the center down.

Protesters have been demonstrating for days and asserting that detainees at the New Jersey facility are on a hunger strike.

U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler, a Manhattan Democrat, said that the only medication they receive is Tylenol.

Catholic congressional Dems rebuke Mike Johnson’s biblical defense of ICE

WASHINGTON (RNS) — Some 40-plus Catholic Democrats in Congress have issued what amounts to a theological rebuke of House Speaker Mike Johnson’s scriptural defense for President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda, outlining a series of religious principles as a deadline looms for lawmakers to fund the Department of Homeland Security.

The group’s Friday (Feb. 13) statement, led by Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro and shared first with Religion News Service, lists a series of ideals drawn from Catholic social teaching that the lawmakers say they consider when approaching immigration issues.

“First, we affirm that people have the right to migrate to sustain their lives and the lives of their families,” the statement reads. “Sacred Scripture consistently reminds us of our obligation toward the vulnerable and displaced. Jesus himself identifies with the migrant when he says, ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me.’”

The statement refers to Pope Leo XIV’s first apostolic exhortation, “Dilexi Te,” noting that the pontiff argues the Catholic Church “knows that in every rejected migrant, it is Christ himself who knocks at the door of the community.”

The statement also says a nation has the right to “regulate its borders and to control immigration,” but doing so “is never a license for cruelty, indifference, or dehumanization.” It adds: “Border enforcement must be governed by justice and mercy.”

The lawmakers then pivot to a critique of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, saying federal agents working for the agencies have “too often … failed this moral standard.” DHS agents, the lawmakers say, have “separated families, removed law abiding individuals from our communities, and tragically, contributed to the deaths of detained migrants and citizens like Renee Good and Alex Pretti.”

The statement adds: “As leaders in Congress negotiate reforms to ICE and CBP, we must bear the Church’s teachings in mind to ensure we are supporting our immigrant brothers and sisters.”
