Hurricane Dolly? Next tropical storm developing in Atlantic with poorly timed name

A new tropical storm is developing in the Atlantic that could be named, unfortunately, “Hurricane Dolly.”
WCAX reports a tropical cyclone appears likely to develop in the Atlantic basin within the next few days. The weather development is being monitored as it has a “high chance” of developing into a tropical storm or hurricane within the next two to seven days.
The storm will be named Dolly as it is the next name on the 2026 list of Atlantic hurricanes. Different names are used to identify different storms during hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
That means Tropical Storm Dolly or Hurricane Dolly could emerge less than a week after the death of Dolly Parton. The beloved country singer, actress and philanthropist died Tuesday at age 80.
“If it becomes a hurricane, it should be a category 9 to 5,” one Facebook user joked.
“She’s going after Jolene,” another commented.
“I would prefer a star be named after her so she could sparkle down on all of us,” a third wrote.
While it may seem like unfortunate timing, “Dolly” was chosen for the list of hurricane names six years ago. The World Meteorological Organization chooses the names, which are recycled every six years.

"rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" @ Delaney Hall 6/4/2026
Here you hear a female voice from the protesters utter "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr", which is strangely similar to what the late Radical Black Poet, Amiri Baraka (father of Ras Baraka Mayor of Newark, NJ) once expressed.
¤¤¤
More from Amiri Baraka (Wikipedia)
In April 1965, Baraka's "A Poem for Black Hearts" was published as a direct response to Malcolm X's assassination, and it further exemplifies the poet's uses of poetry to generate anger and endorse rage against oppression.[42] Like many of his poems, it showed no remorse in its use of raw emotion to convey its message.[43] It was published in the September issue of Negro Digest and was one of the first responses to Malcolm's death to be exposed to the public.[44] The poem is directed particularly at black men, and it scoldingly labels them "faggots" in order to challenge them to act and continue the fallen activist's fight against the white establishment.

Air conditioning didn't just cool buildings.
It depopulated the American Northeast, built the Sun Belt, made the modern Middle East economically viable, and quietly rewired global politics. This video follows Willis Carrier's 1902 invention (originally designed to control humidity in a printing plant, not to make people comfortable) and shows how an industrial fix for smudgy ink reshaped continents.

Norovirus and Hantavirus outbreaks on cruise ships raise alarms. Here's what you need to know
By Denise Dador
Monday, May 11, 2026 8:13AM PT
As norovirus cases rise and hantavirus lingers on cruise ships, health officials advise passengers to take precautionary measures against sicknesses.
Cruise ships are drawing attention not only for a rare strain of hantavirus, but also for more common illnesses such as norovirus while health officials monitor outbreaks and remind travelers to take precautions.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a norovirus outbreak aboard the Caribbean Princess, a cruise ship bound for Florida. The report comes as many travelers prepare for upcoming trips, including families departing from the Port of Los Angeles.
Passengers said they are looking forward to their vacations despite the risks associated with close quarters at sea. Still, many travelers acknowledge illnesses can spread easily on cruise ships and say they are taking steps to protect themselves.
"We're washing our hands if we have something available. If not, we have hand sanitizer on us all the time," one traveler said.
Health experts emphasize basic precautions remain effective in preventing the spread of disease.

Norovirus outbreak reported on Princess cruise ship that departed Fort Lauderdale
By Matthew Ablon
Updated on: May 9, 2026 / 1:04 PM EDT / CBS Miami
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports it is monitoring a norovirus outbreak on board a Princess Cruises ship that departed Fort Lauderdale more than a week ago.
A report from the agency said the outbreak unfolded on the Caribbean Princess, which departed from Port Everglades on April 28. Data gathered by CruiseMapper shows the Caribbean Princess is currently on a 13-day voyage in the Caribbean, with stops in the Bahamas, Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. The ship is set to end its one-way cruise by docking at Port Canaveral in Orlando on May 11.
The CDC report indicates that 102 of the ship's 3,116 passengers reported ill, while 13 of the ship's 1,131 crew members reported ill. The main symptoms shared have included diarrhea and vomiting. The agency said Princess Cruises has responded to the norovirus outbreak by increasing cleaning and disinfection procedures; collecting specimens for testing, isolating ill passengers and crew; and consulting with the agency's Vessel Sanitation Program about cleaning procedures and reporting ill cases.
The CDC notes the VSP is conducting a field response for an environmental assessment and outbreak investigation to help control it. The outbreak was reported on Thursday, May 7.
The outbreak on the Caribbean Princess comes more than a month after another norovirus outbreak was reported on another Princess ship. In March, the Star Princess faced an outbreak that sickened more than 104 guests and 49 crew members. That ship also left Fort Lauderdale and made stops in the Caribbean, albeit in Honduras, Belize and the Mexican Riviera. The Star Princess returned to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale at the conclusion of that voyage. When the outbreak was reported, the Star Princess would have been sailing from Belize City to Cozumel, according to that itinerary.
In early January, the CDC reported that an outbreak on board a Holland America cruise ship had sickened more than 80 people after departing from Fort Lauderdale at the end of December.
In February, the agency said 27 people were sickened in an outbreak of an unknown gastrointestinal illness on board a luxury cruise ship, the Regent Seven Seas, which was sailing from Miami to Honolulu.

Is it a Coincidence, Serendipity, Synchronicity, or Fate?
I have followed the recent escalation of news coverage of Day-Care Fraud in Minnesota which reportedly reaches $9 Billion. Meanwhile, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, who was also Kamala Harris' VP running partner in the 2024 Campaign, decided to discontinue his reelection campaign on Monday 1/5/2026. Today on Capitol Hill, Congress held a Hearing regarding the purported gargantuan social services fraud in Minnesota, then as the hearing was under way in Minneapolis an ICE Officer shot a woman who tried to run him over with her vehicle when ICE Agents were conducting targeted immigration enforcement operations.
So, I was curious on how these events could all occur almost concurrently, and I decided to GOOGLE this question:
Is it a coincidence that Tim Walz dropped out of his governor reelection race, there was a hearing of the fraud in Minnesota, and ICE shoots a woman in Minneapolis?
Google has its AI system answer queries before it gives you other responses to your question.
Here's what AI replied:
AI Overview
Tim Walz dropped out of the Minnesota gubernatorial race on January 5, 2026, due to intense scrutiny over a massive, multi-billion dollar social services fraud scandal, but there is no evidence in news reports to suggest a coordinated link between these events and an unrelated, separate incident where an ICE officer shot a woman.
Here is a breakdown of the events:

Tim Walz dropped out of the Minnesota gubernatorial race on January 5, 2026, due to intense scrutiny over a massive, multi-billion dollar social services fraud scandal, but there is no evidence in news reports to suggest a coordinated link between these events and an unrelated, separate incident where an ICE officer shot a woman.
Here is a breakdown of the events:
- Tim Walz dropping out of the race: On January 5, 2026, Governor Tim Walz announced he would not seek a third term as governor of Minnesota. In his statement, he cited the intense political environment surrounding the ongoing fraud investigation as a distraction from his work as governor. His decision followed a viral video by an independent journalist and a federal government decision to freeze childcare funding to the state, which put significant pressure on his administration.
- Hearing of the fraud in Minnesota: Federal and state investigations into the "Feeding Our Future" and other social services fraud cases, which allegedly total billions in misused federal funds, have been ongoing for some time, with dozens of people charged. A U.S. House Oversight Committee hearing regarding the fraud was scheduled for Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the same week Walz dropped out.
- ICE shoots a woman: A separate and unrelated incident occurred on January 7, 2026, in Minneapolis, where an ICE officer shot and killed a woman who allegedly tried to run them over with her vehicle during an enforcement action. This incident sparked protests and a statement from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, but news reports do not connect it to the ongoing fraud investigations or Walz's political decisions.
The convergence of these events in the news cycle is the result of separate incidents happening around the same time in Minnesota. News coverage indicates that the fraud scandal was the direct cause of Walz's decision to exit the race, while the shooting was a distinct law enforcement incident. There are no credible reports suggesting they are connected as part of a larger, coordinated event.

Washington Was Originally Named Rome, Maryland (Mary-Land)
Published February 11, 2014
Discover the unique history of Rome in Maryland and its influence on Washington D.C., from Francis Pope's estate to Tiber Creek's origins.
Washington’s Hidden Roman Legacy
Nestled in Washington D.C.‘s history is a surprising connection to a little-known place: Rome, in Maryland. This discovery offers a unique glimpse into America’s past.
Rome in America: A 17th Century Vision
In the 17th century, a vast estate of 400 acres existed southeast of what is now Georgetown, in Maryland. Owned by an Italian culture enthusiast, this land was ambitiously named Rome. The owner’s passion for Italy didn’t just influence the name; it shaped his vision for the New World. This estate was more than land; it was a symbol of aspiration and connection to ancient civilizations.
Transitioning from European inspiration to American reality, the landowner renamed Goose Creek to Tiber Creek. This act mirrored Rome’s iconic River Tiber, creating a symbolic link across continents. His vision was to merge the grandeur of ancient Rome with the budding potential of America.
Francis Pope: The Mastermind Behind Rome, Maryland
The visionary behind this American Rome was Francis Pope, who acquired the land on June 5th, 1663. His story, detailed in an October 7th, 1883 Washington Post article, reflects a blend of ambition and whimsy. Pope took pride in his estate, often boasting about his Rome on the Tiber. His unique naming scheme wasn’t just a personal quirk; it was a statement of cultural identity and historical awareness.
Francis Pope’s legacy extends beyond mere land ownership. He imbued his estate with a sense of historical and cultural significance. His choice to name the creek Tiber was a deliberate effort to echo the greatness of ancient Rome in the new American landscape.

Summary
- Russia holds public warning tests
- Russia says: Please remain calm
- United States also to hold public warning test
MOSCOW, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Russia tested its emergency public warning systems across the country on Wednesday, blaring out sirens and interrupting some television and radio broadcasts to warn the population to stay calm.
The test, first conducted in 2020, is part of a new initiative that requires authorities to conduct tests twice a year, starting from Sept. 1.
It comes, though, amid the war in Ukraine that has triggered the deepest crisis in Russia's relations with the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

At around 10:40 a.m. Moscow time (0740 GMT), sirens wailed across some parts of Russia and stern announcements demanded "Attention everyone!".
"The readiness of warning systems is being checked, please remain calm," speakers said in a stern male Russian voice.
"When you hear the sound of a siren, you need to remain calm and not panic, turn on the TV - any publicly accessible channel or radio - and listen to the information message," the Ministry of Emergency Situations said in a statement.

"The warning system is designed to timely convey a signal to the population in the event of a threat or emergency of a natural or man-made nature."
The United States was also conducting a large-scale test of its public warning systems on Wednesday, via U.S. mobile phones and TV and radio stations.
The purpose of the U.S. test is to ensure that the systems "continue to be effective in alerting the public to emergencies, particularly at the national level", the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, said in a press release.
Many other countries have also conducted alert system tests for crises and disasters in recent years.
The Russian test falls on the 91st anniversary of the creation of Russia's civil defence system and follows nationwide educational drills in August on practicing actions and procedures in emergency situations, Russian media reported.
The goal of Russia's tests is to assess the warning systems, the readiness of personnel responsible for launching them and raise public awareness, the emergency ministry said.

FEMA and FCC Plan Nationwide Emergency Alert Test for Oct. 4, 2023
Release Date August 3, 2023
Release Number HQ-23-124
Release Date:
August 3, 2023
Test Messages Will be Sent to All TVs, Radios and Cell Phones
WASHINGTON -- FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) this fall.
The national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests are scheduled to begin at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones. This will be the third nationwide test, but the second test to all cellular devices. The test message will display in either English or in Spanish, depending on the language settings of the wireless handset.
The EAS portion of the test will be sent to radios and televisions. This will be the seventh nationwide EAS test.
FEMA and the FCC are coordinating with EAS participants, wireless providers, emergency managers and other stakeholders in preparation for this national test to minimize confusion and to maximize the public safety value of the test.
The purpose of the Oct. 4 test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level. In case the Oct. 4 test is postponed due to widespread severe weather or other significant events, the back-up testing date is Oct. 11.
The WEA portion of the test will be initiated using FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), a centralized internet-based system administered by FEMA that enables authorities to send authenticated emergency messages to the public through multiple communications networks. The WEA test will be administered via a code sent to cell phones.
This year the EAS message will be disseminated as a Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) message via the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System-Open Platform for Emergency Networks (IPAWS-OPEN).
All wireless phones should receive the message only once. The following can be expected from the nationwide WEA test:Beginning at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET, cell towers will broadcast the test for approximately 30 minutes. During this time, WEA-compatible wireless phones that are switched on, within range of an active cell tower, and whose wireless provider participates in WEA, should be capable of receiving the test message.
For consumers, the message that appears on their phones will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
Phones with the main menu set to Spanish will display: “ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional de Alerta de Emergencia. No se necesita acción.”
WEA alerts are created and sent by authorized federal, state, local, tribal and territorial government agencies through IPAWS to participating wireless providers, which deliver the alerts to compatible handsets in geo-targeted areas. To help ensure that these alerts are accessible to the entire public, including people with disabilities, the alerts are accompanied by a unique tone and vibration.
Important information about the EAS test:The EAS portion of the test is scheduled to last approximately one minute and will be conducted with the participation of radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers and wireline video providers.
The test message will be similar to the regular monthly EAS test messages with which the public is familiar. It will state: “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 14:20 to 14:50 hours ET. This is only a test. No action is required by the public.
