Churches Strike Blow to Trump Admin in Fight Over ICE Raids

A federal appeals court has allowed a coalition of religious organizations to pursue its challenge to the Trump administration’s decision to lift restrictions on immigration enforcement at houses of worship.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled 2-1 Tuesday that the religious organizations had sufficiently demonstrated standing at this stage of the case, reversing a lower court decision that found the threat of enforcement was not sufficiently imminent. U.S. Circuit Judge Florence Pan, a Biden appointee, joined by U.S. Circuit Judge Robert Wilkins, an Obama appointee, wrote the majority opinion. The case was sent back to U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich, a Trump appointee, to reconsider the request for a preliminary injunction. U.S. Circuit Judge Neomi Rao, a Trump appointee, dissented.

The ruling does not decide whether the administration’s policy is lawful, nor does it prohibit ICE from carrying out enforcement actions at churches.

What to Know About ICE Arrests at Churches and Schools

The legal disputes follow the administration’s elimination of protections that had generally discouraged immigration arrests and other enforcement activity at sensitive locations.

Religious organizations challenging the change say immigration enforcement in and around churches can deter some people from attending worship services and participating in ministries. The administration has argued that immigration officers should retain discretion to enforce federal law rather than be governed by categorical restrictions on particular locations.

NYC braces for multiple daily protests as world leaders arrive for UN General Assembly

NEW YORK — As New York braces for multiple daily protests around this year's United Nations General Assembly, NYPD officers will flood midtown Manhattan to protect the public and controversial world leaders scheduled to attend, including President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Thursday.

"Every year, we see an uptick in demonstrations and protests coinciding with the U.N. General Assembly, and as always, the NYPD will facilitate First Amendment activity," Tisch said at a briefing at NYPD headquarters Thursday. "At the same time, there will be intolerance for violence or destruction of property."

Beginning Friday, the NYPD will be monitoring 55 permitted UNGA-related events, NYPD officials said.

"We're expecting multiple protests every day," Tisch added.

There are currently no credible threats against the event, said Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who also attended Thursday's briefing.

Mamdani did not speak about Netanyahu's attendance at the U.N. General Assembly, even though he has repeatedly called the Israeli leader a "war criminal" and had demanded his arrest over the war in Gaza just two months earlier.

"He is the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people," he said in a video posted online on July 21. "There is a reason the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest."

Although he vowed to arrest Netanyahu on the warrant during his campaign, he acknowledged in the same July video that New York City "does not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant" and encouraged the federal government to arrest him.

Oksana Kravchuk emerged from her sleeping compartment on the train from Przemysl, Poland, to Kyiv, Ukraine, on August 22 and gazed out the window at the green pastures of her native homeland.

She hadn’t slept much during the 10-hour overnight train ride, even though she was tired after traveling from Seattle to Poland. Kravchuk had activated Ukraine’s Air Alert app, and its alarm sounded several times throughout the night to warn of possible attacks on Kyiv.

“It’s scary because of the bombings, but I know why I’m going,” said Kravchuk, who moved to the United States after Russia’s first invasion of Ukraine in 2014.

Kravchuk and her husband, Alex, are volunteer coordinators at Uniting for Ukrainian Kids, a Christian organization that brings the children of fallen Ukrainian soldiers to the United States for a three-week stay with host families to learn about the culture and attend a Christian camp. While in Ukraine, the couple was excited to make a surprise visit to the homes of two girls they had previously hosted.

They were also among more than 650 foreign guests from 17 countries who attended Ukraine’s third National Prayer Breakfast in Kyiv on August 23. Attendees began mingling in an outdoor courtyard at 8 a.m., greeting friends over coffee and pastries while classical music played in the background.

WCC leadership meets Pope Leo XIV

Wednesday March 18th, 2026

World Council of Churches: Bedford-Strohm said the meeting clearly strengthened his hope for increasing unity amongst the churches. “We wholeheartedly agreed upon the necessity to put Christ in the center to move us to visible unity,” he said. “We also agreed that a strong prophetic voice against the unscrupulous instrumentalisation of Christian faith for political purposes is needed.”

Bedford-Strohm added: “Whether it is about aggressive invasion, chasing migrants, or putting down whole groups of people, the churches must lift up the voice of the preacher of the sermon on the mount who encouraged us to practice, love, even of the enemy and advocacy for the most vulnerable in society. It was encouraging that we are united in giving this witness of love and empathy to the world in a time where division and violence seem to triumph.”

Pillay expressed gratitude for “a heart-to-heart talk with Pope Leo on very important global issues. Our conversation evolved around the need for visible Christian unity especially in this time of numerous global challenges.”

The WCC delegation outlined the WCC’s work in the area of Christian unity and discussed the importance of working with fellow Christians in giving visible expression to the prayer of Jesus that all may be one.

“We commended the Pope for his commitment to Christian unity and the collaboration and spirit in which the Vatican and WCC have been working together for many decades and reflected on what more we can do together, especially after the celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the first Ecumenical Council last year,” said Pillay. “We mentioned the numerous places in which the WCC is currently engaged in peace initiatives.”

The WCC delegation and Pope Leo also reflected deeply on the wars, conflicts, and violence that continue to pervade our world.

Pope Leo suggests Christian leaders who start wars should go to confession

Pope Leo suggests Christian leaders who start wars should go to confession

Mar 13, 2026

Pope Leo XIV said Christian leaders who bear responsibility for armed conflicts should examine their consciences and seek confession. "Do those Christians who bear serious responsibility in armed conflicts have the humility and courage to make a serious examination of conscience and to go to confession?" Leo said during a speech on Friday.

The pope did not name any specific conflict or individual, but he has repeatedly appealed for peace in Iran and the Middle East, describing the situation as "deeply disturbing." In January, Leo lamented that "war is back in vogue and a zeal for war is spreading."
