THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING OBAMA

POSTED ON JULY 1, 2014 BY SCOTT JOHNSON IN BARACK OBAMA

President Obama found an impossibly weird way to salute White House pastry chef Bill Yosses during a reception in honor of LGBT Pride Month yesterday. I had forgotten that a whole month is devoted to the celebration of LGBT Pride. The Library of Congress joins the celebration here and here.

Obama noted that Bill was there with his husband and that he (Bill) would be leaving his position at the White House. Obama put it this way: “Finally, I have to mention a man who’s made life at the White House very sweet, this is one of Michelle and my favorite people, our executive pastry chef, Bill Yosses, who is here tonight with his husband Charlie.”

He couldn’t leave it at that. Obama added: “This is the problem. We call Bill the Crust Master, because his pies, I don’t know what he does, whether he puts crack in them, or…”

Michelle Obama seemed not entirely comfortable with Obama’s tribute to the Crust Master. She felt compelled to clarify Obama’s tribute: “No, he doesn’t. There is no crack in our pie.”

As the reviewer wrote of the then new Bob Dylan album in the first edition of the Rolling Stone Record Guide: “Weird beyond immediate comment.”

The Adventures of Unemployed Man

A CLASSIC MASTERWORK

Beyond being a hilarious and brilliant dissection of our current economic meltdown, The Adventures of Unemployed Man is an all-time classic.

The art is done by such comics masters as Ramona Fradon, Rick Veitch, Michael Netzer, Terry Beatty, Josef Rubenstein, Benton Jew, Thomas Yeates, Shawn Martinbrough, Clem Robins, Tom Orzechowski, Thomas Mauer and Lee Loughridge. See their bios and be amazed—then see the book, and be even more amazed!

Every page is a stunning work of art in itself. In fact, many pages are now limited-edition fine art posters. With one page selling for as much as 100 dollars, the 80 page book is an extremely good value.

President Obama and Mitt Romney 'zing' for their supper at annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner

President Obama, Timothy Cardinal Dolan and Mitt Romney share a laugh during Al Smith Dinner held in Waldorf-Astoria Thursday.

President Obama joked about that “nice, long nap” he took during his first debate with Mitt Romney.

Dressed in a black tuxedo and white tie, Romney remarked that it was nice to “finally relax and wear what Ann and I wear around the house.”

PHOTOS: AL SMITH DINNERS, PRESENT AND PAST
For a few fleeting hours Thursday night, acrimony gave way to laughter, as the presidential candidates joined for a worthy cause: the annual Al Smith charity dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria.

With Timothy Cardinal Dolan seated between them, Obama and Romney dined on poached lobster tail, rack of lamb with risotto and baby zucchini before taking turns at the podium to poke fun at each other and at themselves.

Romney made gentle references to his Mormon faith, saying that usually when he gets invited to such dinners, “It’s to be the designated driver” and that part of his debate prep was “to refrain from alcohol for 65 years.”

After joking about his own wealth, the former Massachusetts governor took aim at Obama.

Romney remarked that the President, who wants to raise taxes on the wealthy, probably was looking at the well-heeled crowd and thinking, “So little time, so much to redistribute.’”

President Obama and Mitt Romney, seen with Cardinal Dolan, played nice at the annual Al Smith gala.

Romney also invoked his first debate with the President, when he vowed to cut funding for PBS.

“Big Bird didn’t even see it coming,” he kidded. “And by the way, in the spirit of ‘Sesame Street,’ the President’s remarks are brought to you tonight by the letter ‘O’ and the number 16 trillion.”

With his appearance, Obama became the first sitting President to attend the dinner — a New York political tradition for 67 years — since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

“Please take your seats. Otherwise, Clint Eastwood will yell at them,” Obama began, a reference to the actor-director’s dialogue with an empty stool at the Republican National Convention.

Obama made light of his widely panned performance in the first debate.

“I had a lot more energy in our second debate. I felt really well rested after the nice, long nap I had in the first debate,” he said.

And he took aim at Mayor Bloomberg’s ban on large servings of soda. Win or lose, “This is my last campaign, so I’m trying to drink it all in. Unfortunately, Mayor Bloomberg will only let me have 16 ounces,” he added.

The President then poked fun at his opponent’s wealth.

“Earlier today, I went shopping at some stores in midtown. I understand Gov. Romney went shopping FOR some stores in midtown,” he said.

Obama said he and Romney have some things in common, like their unusual middle names. Romney’s is Mitt. “I wish I could use my middle name,” said the President, whose middle name is Hussein.

Obama and Romney found common ground on one other point — their ability to make fun of Vice President Biden.

“I was actually hoping the President would bring Joe Biden along this evening because he will laugh at anything,” Romney said.

The jokes got started long before the candidates got up to do their schtick: Emcee Al Smith 4th, the great-grandson of the former governor for whom the dinner is named, got the crowd going early with a goof on a Romney line from Tuesday night’s debate.

“I want to say a special welcome to all the accomplished women here tonight. It’s good to see you made it out of those binders,” he cracked.

The 1,600-guest dinner raised a record $5 million to benefit Catholic charities — $1 million more than the 2008 dinner, which featured Obama and Arizona Sen. John McCain.

A Comedian and a Cardinal Open Up on Spirituality

By LAURIE GOODSTEIN

The comedian Stephen Colbert and Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York bantered onstage Friday night before 3,000 cheering, stomping, chanting students at Fordham University, in what might have been the most successful Roman Catholic youth evangelization event since Pope John Paul II last appeared at World Youth Day.

The evening was billed as an opportunity to hear two Catholic celebrities discuss how joy and humor infuse their spiritual lives. They both delivered, with surprises and zingers that began the moment the two walked onstage. Mr. Colbert went to shake Cardinal Dolan’s hand, but the cardinal took Mr. Colbert’s hand and kissed it — a disarming role reversal for a big prelate with a big job and a big ring.

Cardinal Dolan was introduced as a man who might one day be elected pope, to which he said, “If I am elected pope, which is probably the greatest gag all evening, I’ll be Stephen III.”

The event would not have happened without its moderator, the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and prolific author who has made it his mission to remind Catholics that there is no contradiction between faithful and funny. His latest book is “Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor and Laughter Are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life.”

Father Martin said in an interview earlier this week that the idea came from two young theology professors at Fordham. The university’s president, the Rev. Joseph M. McShane, invited Cardinal Dolan to participate, and he readily accepted. Father Martin, who has made enough appearances on “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central to earn the title “official chaplain,” invited Mr. Colbert.

The event was announced with much fanfare by Fordham, and CNN was considering broadcasting it, Father Martin said. But then the university announced that it was closed to the media, without any explanation. Three thousand students and faculty members filled the Rose Hill Gymnasium, stomping on the bleachers, doing the wave and chanting “Ste-PHEN” like the revved-up audiences for Mr. Colbert’s studio show.

Some journalists were admitted as guests, and the cone of silence was shattered when many students and an editor from the Catholic magazine Commonweal sent out live posts on Twitter narrating the most memorable one-liners.

Mr. Colbert shed his character for the evening and offered several sincere insights into how he manages to remain a faithful Catholic while making fun of his own religion and most others.

“Are there flaws in the church?” Mr. Colbert said, “Absolutely. But is there great beauty in the church? Absolutely.”

He said he did not make jokes about the sacraments, or put a picture of the crucifixion on screen. But he said he liked to poke fun at the use and misuse of religion, especially in politics. “Then I’m not talking about Christ,” he said, “I’m talking about Christ as cudgel.”

Mr. Colbert is the youngest of 11 children, raised by Catholic parents who both attended Catholic colleges. His father and two of his brothers died in a plane crash when Mr. Colbert was 10. He said that after the funeral, in the limousine on the way home, one of his sisters made another sister laugh so hard that she fell on the floor. At that moment, Mr. Colbert said he resolved that he wanted to be able to make someone laugh that hard.

He is raising his children as Catholics, and he teaches Sunday school at his parish in New Jersey. “The real reason I remain a Catholic is what the church gives me, which is love,” he said.

Cardinal Dolan introduced Mr. Colbert’s wife, Evelyn, who was sitting in the audience, and brought her up to the stage. The cardinal put his arm around her and gave her a kiss on the cheek, and when Mr. Colbert feigned offense, the cardinal said, in a remark that brought down the house, “I can kiss your wife. You can’t kiss mine.”

Mr. Colbert used his time onstage with the cardinal to air his complaints about the new English translation of the Mass, which was just introduced in American parishes this year.

“Consubstantial!” Mr. Colbert exclaimed, using a particularly cumbersome word that is now recited in the Nicene Creed. “It’s the creed! It’s not the SAT prep.”

The audience sent in questions by Twitter and e-mail, which Father Martin pitched to the two men. Among them: “I am considering the priesthood. Would it be prudent to avoid dating?”

Cardinal Dolan responded that, on the contrary, “it’s good” to date, partly to discern whether the celibate life of a priest is what you want. Then he added, “By the way, let me give you the phone numbers of my nieces.”

Mr. Colbert said, “It’s actually a great pickup line: I’m seriously considering the priesthood. You can change my mind.”

Another question was even more pointed: “So many Christian leaders spread hatred, especially of homosexuals. How can you maintain your joy?”

Cardinal Dolan responded with two meandering anecdotes — one about having met this week with Muslim leaders, and another about encountering demonstrators outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

But Mr. Colbert’s response was quick and unequivocal. “If someone spreads hate,” he said, “then they’re not your religious leader.”

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: September 15, 2012

An earlier version of this article misidentified the magazine whose editor sent out live Twitter posts from the event. It is Commonweal, not the Jesuit weekly America.

Presidential Turkey Pardon Double the Fun

November 24, 2011 10:15 AM EST

Not just one but two turkeys can breathe easier this Thanksgiving thanks to the official presidential turkey pardon. While other turkeys are busy fearing for their lives (or, more likely, already gracing ovens and tables across the country), Liberty and Peace can go on to live their lives in peace and luxury.

According to the LA Times, the presidential turkey pardon tradition dates back to at least 1989 when President George H.W. Bush (the father, not the son) excused a live turkey from being eaten. Others claim the tradition is even older, dating back to 1963 when John F. Kennedy unofficially pardoned a turkey.

It's heartwarming to think that on a day of carnage, at least two animals are revered as the majestic creatures they are. One can't help but feel sad for the thousands, if not millions of other turkeys that gave their lives for the holiday table.

President Obama was accompanied by his daughters Malia and Sasha for the official event. The president joked that this was another action that didn't need congressional approval - a reference to recent events he took to try jump-starting the economy. "We can't wait to pardon these turkeys!" are the enthusiastic words the president uttered, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Liberty and Peace were chosen from a flock of turkeys raised by high school students in Montana. Reuters notes that only Liberty was trained for the day's events by the students to prepare them for the noise and commotion caused by the press. In addition to de-sensitivity training for loud noises and flash bulbs, the turkeys underwent more training for the big day. "They also received the most important part of their media training, which involves learning how to gobble without really saying anything," joked the president.

The news of Liberty and Peace's pardons are bittersweet. On one hand, two birds were humanized and given a reprieve from death. On the other, plenty more birds (and pigs and countless other animals) die in preparation for the holidays. Not every animal has the luxury of being treated well - not every turkey is raised on a rural farm and cared for by attentive high school students. Many turkeys bred and raised for holiday feasts are subject to inadequate housing, cruel practices and less than quick deaths.

The lucky recipients of the presidential turkey pardon will go on to live out the rest of their days at Mount Vernon, the historic home of George Washington. It's not clear what the lap of luxury looks like for turkeys, but one can presume it involves premium food and the freedom from cruel and inhumane conditions that many factory-farmed turkeys are subject to.

Still another concern is that these two turkeys could have possibly gone to needy families. According to Reuters, the First Family visited a food bank for thanksgiving. President Obama is quoted as saying they brought two "unnamed turkeys who weren't so lucky" with them. Really? Just two turkeys?

P.S.

Obama named the 'pardoned' turkeys Liberty and Peace. Wow? Liberty and Peace are pardoned?

Why weren't they named Hope and Change?

Didn't President Clinton pardon Tragedy and Hope?

And, didn't President W. Bush pardon Scooter Libby?

Just wondering?

Survive the Zombie Apocalypse: The Cost of a Survival Kit

October 30, 2011

By Casey Bond

zombie survival kitWhen it comes to your emergency savings fund, have you set aside some money in preparation for a real emergency? For instance, when the zombie apocalypse hits, will you be ready?

One of the key possessions you should have on hand is azombie survival kit. Putting one together requires quite a few items, and the cash to fund it, so make sure you budget for this end-of-the-world must-have.

Emergency Essentials

While there are endless items it would be nice to have in your zombie survival kit, at least make sure you’re covered all theemergency essentials you’ll need to stay alive. Keep in mind, you want to keep you kit light, so try to scavenge for things like food and weapons along the way to the nearest COSTCO.

bic lighterBic lighter: $1

With no gas or electricity, you will need a way to keep warm. Lighters are small and lightweight, though they don’t last long. Consider stocking up on several.

can openerCan opener: $10

Canned food will likely be the most abundant and lost-lasting sustenance available, so be sure you can actually get to it.

mylar blanketMylar blanket: $2

Made from the same material as those foil-like balloons, protect yourself from the elements by wrapping up in this shiny, durable blanket.

aluminum water bottleAluminum Water Bottle: $15

After most disasters, fresh water is hard to come by–keep a refillable aluminum water bottle on hand for when you come across clean water sources.

first aid kitFirst Aid Kit: $20

If you’re bitten, game over. However, there are a number of ways you could be injured while navigating the post-apocalyptic world. Make sure you’re prepared with bandages, disinfectant and tape.

maglightMaglight: $18

This heavy duty flashlight allows you to find your way around in the dark, and doubles as a handy brain-basher for close encounters with the walking dead.

batteriesAA Batteries: $15

Keep your flashlight going and be able to juice up any useful small electronics you find. Pro tip: Rubbing a battery and steel wool together will start a fire if there aren’t any lighters or matches around.

pocketknifePocket knife: $10

Like duct tape, you can accomplish just about any task with a pocket knife.

backpackComfy Backpack: $80

Invest in a durable and comfortable backpack. You’ll likely be on foot most of the time and need to carry the above items on you.

Total Cost of Survival = $171

Don’t worry if you don’t have any of these items, you can divide up the total cost into manageable monthly increments. And luckily, even if the undead never attack, your zombie survival kit will work well as an emergency preparedness kit in the even of any disaster.

The Health Nazi says: No soda for You!

The Health Nazi says: No soda for You!

Mayor Michael Bloomberg (Mayer Bloomingdales) of New York City, said that the City's food stamp recipients should not be able to buy soda (pop, tonic) or carbonated beverages.

Here's an article on the story:.
.
No Soda for You!

Jonathan H. Adler • October 7, 2010 9:07 am

The WSJ reports:

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson have asked the federal government to bar New York City food-stamp recipients from using the benefit to buy sugary drinks, an effort to determine if the move would decrease obesity and diabetes problems.

The request, sent late Wednesday to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, could affect an estimated 1.7 million city residents who receive food stamps. As much as $135 million in federal nutrition benefits is used to buy sugar-sweetened drinks, the mayor’s office said. . .

Food-stamp users cannot use benefits to buy alcohol and cigarettes. The request asks that the USDA allow city officials to have two years to assess if sugary-drink purchases drop, as well as problems associated with diabetes and obesity, a mayoral spokeswoman said. The proposal would not affect the total benefits received, she said.

So is this an example of over-weening paternalism? Or is it a responsible limitation on government assistance?

Stephen Colbert's testimony: Mocking Congress?

September 27, 2010 10:00 am

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer confirmed Sunday that Democrats can be just as cranky as Republicans when being made fun of on their own turf. According to the New York Daily News:

Even some Democrats thought Stephen Colbert's Capitol Hill routine was more gaffe than goof.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer called the Comedy Central star’s bit, which had some laughing and others groaning last week, "not appropriate."

"I think it was an embarrassment for Mr. Colbert more than the House," the Maryland politician said on "Fox News Sunday."

"What he had to say was not the way it should have been said," Hoyer added.

The "Colbert Report" funnyman was invited to testify before the House Judiciary Committee by Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a move that rankled some.

"I think that he mocked the hearing process," Rep. Steve King, a Republican from Iowa, said after the hearing on Friday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi supported Colbert.
King's reaction is in line with the Beltway consensus that Colbert made a "mockery" of Congress with his satirical testimony on immigration reform. King, who confessed he had never watched "The Colbert Report" in the past, was evidently so unprepared for some face-to-face humor that he ordered his staff to flag any unflattering footage Colbert may have aired of him.

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) preempted everyone else's crankiness by inviting the comedian to leave the House Judiciary Committee hearing before he could speak. Conyers and his colleagues looked every bit the part of elderly curmudgeons protecting their lawn as they sat poker-faced during Colbert's act, while their younger aides, seated behind them, cracked a few smiles and laughs.

I'm not a regular Colbert viewer; I probably take in more hours of early-morning rebroadcasts of congressional hearings on C-SPAN than late-night Comedy Central. But I'll give Colbert this: If there's any issue for which Congress deserves some face-to-face mockery, it's immigration reform.

Self-described mutt Barack Obama: Don't 'talk about me like a dog'

By Toby Harnden World Last updated: September 7th, 2010

President Obama walks his dog, Bo, on the White House lawn (Photo: Win McNamee/Getty Images)

Just when it seemed that Barack Obama couldn’t dig himself any deeper into the political hole he’s in, he does something really stupid. “Some powerful interests who had been dominating the agenda in Washington for a very long time and they’re not always happy with me,” he told a union crowd in Milwaukee. “They talk about me like a dog. That’s not in my prepared remarks, but it’s true.”

The comment makes him look ridiculous. First off, there are inevitable racial overtones to it. To be treated “like a dog” is to be treated as something less than human. In the Muslim world, to call someone a dog is a pretty serious insult (and no, I’m not suggesting Obama is a Muslim).

Who historically in the US has been treated as less than human? Blacks during the eras of slavery and segregation. During his campaign and since in office (the Henry Louis Gates fiasco was an exception) Obama has – to his credit – generally not sought to make racial comments or, to use that hackneyed term, “play the race card”. Now he’s going to be accused of doing so.

The other reason he looks stupid is that he himself has described both himself and black people in canine terms. Two days after he was elected, he referred to shelter dogs as “mutts like me”, a jocular reference to his mixed race. A month ago, he described African-Americans as “a mongrel people”. I don’t have a problem with either comment but if you’re going to rail about people talking about you like a dog then perhaps, er, you shouldn’t do so yourself.

The remark is also a bit odd because one of the most ridiculous bonanzas of media puffery surrounding the Obama administration (the organic vegetable patch was a close second) was the unveiling of Bo the First Dog. Obama milked it for months. It seems like the most pampered dog in the world. So, maybe not so bad to be talked about like a dog if you live in the White House .

And then there’s the basic conceit that it is “powerful interests” who oppose Obama. Come on! This man is President of the United States. He is the ultimate powerful interest. You may be able to portray yourself as a plucky outsider when you’re running for the White House but once you’re elected, it just doesn’t wash.

The sense from the Obama administration that they think that anyone who opposes their policies is stupid or racist or allied with “powerful interests” is plain wrong as well as politically disastrous.

Pretty soon, Obama is going to have to conclude that Harry Truman was right when he (supposedly) said that “if you want a friend in Washington, get a dog”. At this rate, Bo will be the only one still supporting him – if, that is, he isn’t miffed by his master’s derogatory comment about dogs.
