A Russian Mi-8 helicopter crossed 1,000 feet into Nato airspace this week, prompting warnings to residents about preparedness.

The helicopter came from the heavily militarised Kaliningrad region close to the Polish town of Braniewo.

It flew above Polish territory for around 42 seconds, triggering Nato fighter jets to scramble in response.

Poland saw the move as a deliberate transgression to test Nato defences, but also a sobering warning to residents to be prepared in case of a needed evacuation.

The country’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister Radosław Sikorski revealed he had an evacuation backpack ready amid fears of full-scale war.

Romania evacuates border village after Russian drone attack on gas tanker

Romania evacuates border village after Russian drone attack on gas tanker

Three Romanian villages have been evacuated after Russia attacked a Turkish LNG tanker off the coast of neighbouring Ukraine on Monday.

The MR Orinda suffered significant damage during a Russian strike in Ukraine's southern Odesa region and scores of people were evacuated, mostly from the border village of Tulcea in the Nato member state, over fears it could explode.

It was hit during the offloading of liquefied petroleum gas at Izmail port, Turkey said, with the attack coming one day after Volodymyr Zelensky signed a deal to import US liquefied natural gas through the area.

Some anxious parents of college-bound teenagers shell out for Mace and key-chain flashlights to keep their kids safe. And then there’s the two New Jersey families who split a $7,500 monthly bill to have an aluminum boat on standby to whisk their children — both enrolled at Fordham University — across the Hudson River in the event of an NYC terrorist attack.

“They don’t want them to be trapped,” said Plan B Marine co-founder Chris Dowhie, who owns more than 10 boats docked in Brooklyn and Manhattan that he rents to nervous New Yorkers for emergencies.
