For months, skeptics of Paramount’s $111 billion deal for Warner Bros. Discovery have wondered how much David Ellison, the tech scion in charge of the combined company, might want to change CNN.
As it turns out: not much. For now, at least.
Ellison is working out a deal to keep Mark Thompson, CNN’s current CEO, in place as the network’s top leader for at least the next year, according to two people with knowledge of the talks who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details were not yet finalized.
Under the plan taking shape, Bari Weiss, the contrarian critic of mainstream media whom Ellison picked to run CBS News, would remain in her current role as the deal closed. For the time being, she is not expected to take on editorial or operational oversight of CNN, according to one of those people and another person familiar with the negotiations.
Weiss retains the support of the Ellison family, and her role could eventually change, the two people added.
Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery will create a media giant that places CBS News and CNN, streaming services HBO and Paramount+ and two major movie studios, Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures, under the same corporate umbrella. The deal is scheduled to close next week after a legal battle that delayed its completion for several months.
In the negotiations, which are ongoing, Thompson has long insisted on preserving his authority to operate the network independently, without interference from other executives.
It is possible that Thompson and Ellison do not reach an agreement that allows him to run CNN for the foreseeable future.

MOSCOW, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Russia believes the UN Security Council should expand its number of permanent members beyond the current five, and that the existing veto system should remain, the Kremlin said on Tuesday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was responding to a question from reporters about Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's call to abolish both permanent membership and the veto.
Erdogan has long criticised the council, saying its veto-carrying permanent members - Britain, China, France, Russia and the US - are not reflective of the international community and are unable to take swift decisions.
Peskov said Russia wanted the council to be reformed, and the permanent membership expanded. "At the same time, we believe that the institution of permanent members of the Security Council, as well as the right of veto, are very important elements of the entire structure of the United Nations," he said.

On September 11, 2001 after Islamic extremist terrorists murdered nearly 3,000 people in the U.S., there were fears of an anti-Muslim backlash. Twenty-five years later, that’s flipped. Ten million or more Muslims have immigrated to the west. Today, Muslim figures are mayor of New York and London. But there’s also conflict. Europe is gripped by tensions caused by the rapid demographic change. President Trump showed that tough immigration policies can win elections. And now, after a wave of Conservative populist gains, Europe is following his lead. Today, an eye-opening Full Measure report from the UK on a story we’ve tracked for over a decade.
🌿 What happened in June 1863 changed Adventist health history forever.
During a small gathering in Michigan, Ellen G. White received a vision that emphasized the connection between physical health, the mind, daily habits, temperance, and spiritual life. What seemed simple — nutrition, rest, exercise, water, fresh air, and self-control — would influence generations and help shape the Adventist medical missionary work. 🥗💧🌤️
In this video, you will discover the story of the 1863 Health Reform Vision, understand why it became so important to early Adventists, and see how its principles still raise powerful questions today:
✨ How are we caring for the life God has given us?
😴 Are we respecting our need for proper rest?
🥦 Are our habits strengthening or weakening our bodies?
🧠 How are physical health and mental clarity connected?
🙏 What do temperance and self-control have to do with the Christian life?
More than a list of rules, Ellen White’s health reform message points toward a life of balance, responsibility, temperance, and service to God and others.
📖 A story about practical faith, daily choices, and small decisions that can transform an entire life.
Why Do Products Suddenly Have Two Barcodes? and why are QR codes suddenly appearing next to familiar UPC barcodes?
For more than 50 years, traditional barcodes have helped stores identify products and retrieve prices with a single beep. But they usually identify only the type of product, not its individual batch, expiration date, origin, or recall status.
That is why retailers and manufacturers are preparing for a shift toward more capable 2D barcodes.
In this video, we explore how traditional UPC barcodes work, what GS1 Digital Link and 2D barcodes can do, and why many products may temporarily carry both a striped barcode and a square code.
The barcode is not simply being replaced. It is evolving from a price lookup number into a connection between a physical product and its changing digital record.
Would you trust a product more if one scan revealed its origin, expiry date, and recall status?

As the specter of the U.S.-led regime change grows, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) released photos of agency chief John Ratcliffe meeting with Cuban officials in Havana on Thursday.
Ratcliffe and several U.S. officials—some of whose faces were blurred by the CIA in images posted to X—held talks Thursday with Cuba’s Interior Minister, the head of Cuban intelligence and Raúl Castro’s grandson, Raulito Rodríguez Castro. A CIA official told The Associated Press that the director was there “to personally deliver President Donald Trump’s message that the United States is prepared to seriously engage on economic and security issues, but only if Cuba makes fundamental changes.”
The threat of regime change in Cuba has grown in recent weeks. President Donald Trump has repeatedly mused about taking over Cuba and suggested May 8 that a U.S. aircraft might leave the Iran War theater and position itself off the country’s coast. The administration has also intensified its economic war, blocking oil shipments since January. Amid energy blackouts, a collapsing economy and protests in the capital, Cuba’s oil and gas supplies have now run dry, according to Cuban Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy.

Catholic affiliation has plummeted across six major Latin American countries over the past decade, while the religiously unaffiliated population has surged dramatically.
The share of unaffiliated adults now exceeds that of Protestants in Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Mexico, marking a historic shift in the region’s religious landscape.
Despite declining church affiliation, Latin Americans remain deeply religious, with about 90% believing in God and majorities praying daily.
Catholicism in Latin American countries has shrunk over the last decade, while a growing percentage of adults identify as religiously unaffiliated, describing themselves as atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular.”
Those are among the key findings in a report released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center based on surveys conducted in early 2024 of adults in six of the region’s most populous countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.
“Our analysis found that the Catholic share of the population in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru — which collectively make up about 75% of Latin America’s population — has significantly declined since 2013-14, while a growing share of adults in the region are religiously unaffiliated,” said Kirsten Lesage, a Pew research associate and the lead author of the report.
The push by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who arrives Wednesday, is part of a major rethink as ties sour with the U.S. — the world’s No. 1 economy and long the largest trading partner for Canada by far.

BEIJING (AP) — As Canadian leader Mark Carney arrives in China on Wednesday, his hosts see an opportunity to peel the longtime U.S. ally away from their rival, at least a bit.
China’s state media is calling on the Canadian government to set a foreign policy path independent of the United States — what it calls “strategic autonomy.”
Canada has long been one of America’s closest allies, geographically and otherwise. But Beijing is hoping that President Donald Trump’s economic aggression — and, now, military action — against other countries will erode that longstanding relationship.
The government bristled at former U.S. President Joe Biden’s efforts to strengthen relations with Europe, Australia, India, Canada and others to confront China. Now it sees an opportunity to try to loosen those ties, though it remains cautious about how far that will go.
Carney, for his part, has focused on trade, describing the trip to China as part of a move to forge new partnerships around the world to end Canada’s economic reliance on the American market. Trump has hit Canada with tariffs on its exports to the United States and suggested the vast, resource-rich country could become America’s 51st state.
Latinos are now 40 percent of the U.S. Catholic Church and likely to become the majority. The election of American-Peruvian Pope Leo reflects their ascendence.

DES PLAINES, Ill. — Latino Catholics are building more of their own institutions, including a major leadership-training group and the country’s first Latino owned-and-run Catholic retreat center. Spanish-speaking Catholics are reviving shrinking White parishes. And the percentage of Latino Catholics born in the United States — not abroad — is rising.
This is a time of change for Latino Catholics, who now make up nearly 40 percent of the U.S. church, and who some U.S. Catholicism experts predict are likely to become the majority in the coming decades.
Fourteen percent of Catholics born between 1928 and 1945 were Latino compared with 54 percent of Gen Z Catholics born between 1997 and 2005, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
“It’s been about time,” Vicente Del Real, 35, said of the prominent, self-built Latino Catholic institutions becoming more common in the United States. Del Real emigrated from Mexico as a teen to Illinois and founded Iskali, a group that supports young Latino Catholics, and Casa Iskali, a retreat center in Des Plaines, Illinois. “I could have said this 50 years ago and it would have been true. There should be another 200 or 300 organizations like ours around the country.”
But the U.S. Catholic Church is still facing significant challenges, including the disruptive impact of the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement policies. Also, Latinos are a bigger share of the U.S. Catholic population, but younger Latinos are fleeing Catholicism, mostly to become religiously unaffiliated.
In 2010, 67 percent of Hispanic Americans were Catholic compared with 43 percent now, according to Pew Research.
