🌧️ Last Day Events — Chapter 13: The Latter Rain

🕊️ The Final Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

*Last Day Events by Ellen G. White, presented by SDA Wisdom**, continues with Chapter 13, **“The Latter Rain,”* a powerful examination of the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit before Christ’s return.

🌱 Just as the former rain caused the seed to germinate and the latter rain prepared the harvest, the Holy Spirit carries God’s people through spiritual growth toward maturity in Christ.

This chapter explores Pentecost as the beginning of the former rain and points toward an even greater manifestation of divine power near the close of earth’s history.

🔥 Yet receiving the latter rain requires more than simply waiting for a future spiritual awakening.

God calls His people to seek the Holy Spirit, humble their hearts, repent, surrender completely, put away strife, and actively labor for Christ.

✨ In This Chapter

  • 🌧️ Discover the meaning of the **former and latter rain**.
  • 🔥 Examine the extraordinary results of **Pentecost**.
  • 📖 Understand the relationship between **revival and reformation**.
  • 🙏 Learn why earnest *prayer and repentance* are essential.
  • ❤️ Discover why Christians must **love one another and reject dissension**.
  • 🕊️ Explore the necessity of **total surrender to the Holy Spirit**.
  • 🌾 Understand how believers can prepare for the **latter rain**.
  • 🌍 Discover why God calls His church to become **active laborers in Christ’s service**.
  • ⚠️ Consider the warning that **not everyone will receive the latter rain**.

🌟 Prepare for the Heavenly Refreshing

The message is deeply personal: preparation cannot be postponed or accomplished for us by someone else.

Each believer is called to seek God individually, walk faithfully in the light already received, and allow the Holy Spirit to transform the character.

📖 *Watch Chapter 13 and prayerfully consider whether your life is being prepared for the latter rain.*

Jesus, Our Only Intercessor

In oppossition to God

Several years ago I read, with amazement, deep concern and, heartfelt disappointment, an article in a major magazine entitled Mary’s Role in Salvation History. As a Bible-believing Christian, I felt that the ideas presented were bold attacks on the God of all creation, His Son and our Savior Jesus Christ, and His plan of Salvation for men’s souls. When compared with the Bible, those ideas reveal that they are patently false. The writer reiteriated a fabricated narrative that Mary, the mother of Jesus, is our co-mediator. Unfortunately, many who call themselves Christians are unwittingly, but warmly and increasingly embracing that perverse doctrine.

First, the writer pointed out that one is unable to properly understand the Scripture with a mere 4th or 5th grade education. The Scripture and Salvation history, which it teaches, refutes that notion. Most Bible writers were not at all highly educated. In fact, the Bible is clear that many of them were ordinary men. Some were farmers. Others were peasants. Yet others were herdsmen, shepherds, fishermen, and men of low estate. Their pronouncements on the things of God were not based upon theological exegesis, intellectual philosophy, or institutional training. Their work was based solely on the inspiration of God. The apostle Peter declares: “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of men; but holy men spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21). The apostle Paul agrees: “ All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness… that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” ( 2 Timothy 3:16,17).

God’s plan of Redemption is understood by the very same means it is given, i.e. through the inspiration of God by the Holy Ghost. Thus we find Jesus admonishing the Jewish leaders, “Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me”(John 5:39). He continues, “If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself” ( John17:7). James, the Lord’s brother, advises us, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given to him” (James 1:5)

The work of the Holy Spirit is to lead all men, regardless of age, educational background, or social status, to an understanding of God’s love for fallen humanity. Jesus teaches,“Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He will not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come” (John 16L13). No age restrictions here. The very young was attracted to Jesus. When His disciples attempted to prevent them from coming to Him, The Lord rebuked them, “Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:14). Here’s the polar opposite of having some higher level of education in order to understand the love of God.

The Unopened Gift: A Call to Spiritual Revival

In the quiet corners of our churches and the private spaces of our hearts, a profound paradox exists: we possess the promise of an infinite power that we rarely dare to activate. While we spend years analyzing the theological dimensions of the Holy Spirit, we often leave the gift itself wrapped and untouched on the shelf. The upcoming "Unleashed" initiative, a ten-day global call to prayer, seeks to change that narrative by moving believers from spiritual observation to active, Spirit-led revival.

The foundation of this movement rests on a simple but radical premise: prayer is the birthplace of the miraculous. History has shown that when the faithful seek God with singular focus, the results are tangible—healed relationships, renewed passion for service, and a complete transformation of the human heart. As ancient scripture promises in Ezekiel, only the Divine Spirit can perform the "spiritual heart transplant" necessary to replace a hardened spirit with one that is vibrant and new.

The Holy Spirit Blows Where He/She Wishes and Calls Whom He/She Calls

Recently, I attended the commissioning service for a woman pastor I know. The service was enormously inspiring, yet, on another dimension, it was sadly disheartening as well. Actually, it was more deeply troubling than disheartening.

Some things were crystal clear. It was clear that the congregation was enthusiastically in full support of this woman as their pastor. Her congregation expressed genuine respect and even affection for her. She and her congregation are united in uplifting Jesus and making him known to their community. It is apparent that her church is moving forward with vigor.

I have talked with her privately and am inspired by her humility, vision, and ability to rally her congregants to participation in the life and mission of their church. She has an active strategy of encouraging and supporting her members in developing their spiritual gifts. She is focused strongly on the primacy of developing their walk with Jesus.

It was also clear that the woman has been granted spiritual gifts which she is using to serve Jesus. You can sense that her spiritual influence is deep but humble. I have no doubt the Holy Spirit continues to gift her for ministry.

It is also clear from our conversation that she is deeply convicted that she has been called by God to ministry. Her congregation is convinced, too. So is the local Conference. So is the Union Conference. (Who else should express an opinion?) While she was interim pastor, her congregation was going through a lengthy search process to find just the right pastor when the light dawned that they already had just the right pastor in her. Her selection was unanimous and the Conference and Union heartily supported their decision.

During the commissioning service, the Conference President explained the difference between ordination and commissioning. It was obvious he thinks the differentiation is ridiculous — as did the Union Ministerial Director. The few pastoral prerogatives that commissioned women cannot perform are, in actual practice, quite inconsequential.

These few technicalities are mostly about maintaining some contrast between ordination and commissioning while simultaneously flimflamming the IRS into believing that commissioning and ordination are essentially equivalent — which is required by the IRS in order to gain favorable tax treatment of pastoral compensation. But we know the truth. It is all just a ruse to keep women subordinate in their service to God while maintaining favorable tax treatment — which saves the Church money.

As the service unfolded, I became agitated at the state of affairs in our Church regarding treatment of women in ministry and I feel compelled to write with some rawness and candor.

The Inestimable Gift

The Inestimable Gift

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in him, . . . that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, . . . the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the Beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”

Such are the words in which “Paul the aged,” “the prisoner of Jesus Christ,” writing from his prison-house at Rome, endeavored to set before his brethren that which he found language inadequate to express in its fulness,-“the unsearchable riches of Christ,”-the treasure of grace freely offered to the fallen sons of men. The plan of redemption was laid by a sacrifice, a gift. Says the apostle: “Ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.” Christ “gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity.” And as the crowning blessing of redemption, “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

“In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: that we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

Christ, by his sacrifice paying the penalty of sin, would not only redeem man, but recover the dominion which man had forfeited. All that was lost by the first Adam will be restored by the second. The prophet says, “O Tower of the flock, the stronghold of the daughter of Zion, to thee shall it come, even the first dominion.” And Paul points forward to the “redemption of the purchased possession.” God created the earth to be the abode of holy, happy beings. That purpose will be fulfilled when, renewed by the power of God, and freed from sin and sorrow, it shall become the eternal home of the redeemed.

A fear of making the future inheritance seem too material has led many to spiritualize away the very truths which lead us to look upon it as our home. Christ assured his disciples that he went to prepare mansions for them in the Father’s house. Those who accept the teachings of God’s Word will not be wholly ignorant concerning the heavenly abode. And yet “eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” Human language is inadequate to describe the reward of the righteous. It will be known only to those who behold it. No finite mind can comprehend the glory of the paradise of God.

In the Bible the inheritance of the saved is called a country. There the heavenly Shepherd leads his flock to fountains of living waters. The tree of life yields its fruit every month, and the leaves of the tree are for the service of the nations, There are ever-flowing streams, clear as crystal, and beside them waving trees cast their shadows upon the paths prepared for the ransomed of the Lord. There the widespreading plains swell into hills of beauty, and the mountains of God rear their lofty summits. On those peaceful plains, beside those living streams, God’s people, so long pilgrims and wanderers, shall find a home.

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.” What love, what matchless love, that, sinners and aliens as we are, we may be brought back to God, and adopted into his family! We may address him by the endearing name, “Our Father,” which is a sign of our affection for him, and a pledge of his tender regard and relationship to us. And the Son of God, beholding the heirs of grace, “is not ashamed to call them brethren.” They have even a more sacred relationship to God than have the angels who have never fallen.

All the paternal love which has come down from generation to generation through the channel of human hearts, all the springs of tenderness which have opened in the souls of men, are but as a tiny rill to the boundless ocean, when compared with the infinite, exhaustless love of God. Tongue can not utter it; pen can not portray it. You may meditate upon it every day of your life; you may search the Scriptures diligently in order to understand it; you may summon every power and capability that God has given you, in the endeavor to comprehend the love and compassion of the Heavenly Father; and yet there is an infinity beyond. You may study that love for ages; yet you can never fully comprehend the length and the breadth, the depth and the height, of the love of God in giving his Son to die for the world. Eternity itself can never fully reveal it. Yet as we study the Bible, and meditate upon the life of Christ and the plan of redemption, these great themes will open to our understanding more and more. And it will be ours to realize the blessing which Paul desired for the Ephesian church, when he prayed “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe.”

Christ’s redeemed ones are his jewels, his precious and peculiar treasure. “They shall be as the stones of a crown,”-“the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.” In them “he shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied.” Christ looks upon his people in their purity and perfection as the reward of all his sufferings, his humiliation, and his love, and the supplement of his glory,
-Christ the great center, from whom radiates all glory.

The Seven Deacons

This chapter is based on Acts 6:1-7.

"In those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration."

The early church was made up of many classes of people, of various nationalities. At the time of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, "there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven." Acts 2:5. Among those of the Hebrew faith who were gathered at Jerusalem were some commonly known as Grecians, between whom and the Jews of Palestine there had long existed distrust and even antagonism.

The hearts of those who had been converted under the labors of the apostles, were softened and united by Christian love. Despite former prejudices, all were in harmony with one another. Satan knew that so long as this union continued [88] to exist, he would be powerless to check the progress of gospel truth; and he sought to take advantage of former habits of thought, in the hope that thereby he might be able to introduce into the church elements of disunion.

Thus it came to pass that as disciples were multiplied, the enemy succeeded in arousing the suspicions of some who had formerly been in the habit of looking with jealousy on their brethren in the faith and of finding fault with their spiritual leaders, and so "there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews." The cause of complaint was an alleged neglect of the Greek widows in the daily distribution of assistance. Any inequality would have been contrary to the spirit of the gospel, yet Satan had succeeded in arousing suspicion. Prompt measures must now be taken to remove all occasion for dissatisfaction, lest the enemy triumph in his effort to bring about a division among the believers.

The disciples of Jesus had reached a crisis in their experience. Under the wise leadership of the apostles, who labored unitedly in the power of the Holy Spirit, the work committed to the gospel messengers was developing rapidly. The church was continually enlarging, and this growth in membership brought increasingly heavy burdens upon those in charge. No one man, or even one set of men, could continue to bear these burdens alone, without imperiling the future prosperity of the church. There was necessity for a further distribution of the responsibilities which had been borne so faithfully by a few during the earlier days of the church. The apostles must now take an important step in [89] the perfecting of gospel order in the church by laying upon others some of the burdens thus far borne by themselves.

Summoning a meeting of the believers, the apostles were led by the Holy Spirit to outline a plan for the better organization of all the working forces of the church. The time had come, the apostles stated, when the spiritual leaders having the oversight of the church should be relieved from the task of distributing to the poor and from similar burdens, so that they might be free to carry forward the work of preaching the gospel. "Wherefore, brethren," they said, "look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word." This advice was followed, and by prayer and the laying on of hands, seven chosen men were solemnly set apart for their duties as deacons.

The appointment of the seven to take the oversight of special lines of work, proved a great blessing to the church. These officers gave careful consideration to individual needs as well as to the general financial interests of the church, and by their prudent management and their godly example they were an important aid to their fellow officers in binding together the various interests of the church into a united whole.
