Major economies approach their largest budget deficits since the COVID-19 pandemic

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned of deteriorating public finances in the world’s major economies. In 2026, budget deficits in China and the United States are expected to reach or exceed 8% of GDP, while net borrowing across advanced economies is projected to total 5.2% of GDP. This would be the highest level since 2021.

According to the IMF, net borrowing by the US general government sector will reach 8.5% of GDP in 2026, up from 7.1% in 2025 and 5.8% before the COVID-19 pandemic. The fiscal outlook has deteriorated compared with the IMF’s April projections amid turmoil in global debt markets.

At the same time, government borrowing costs are rising. Investors are concerned about growing public debt, inflation and large-scale investment in artificial intelligence. In September, a bond sell-off put additional pressure on government budgets as debt-servicing costs increased.

According to the IMF, global public debt is expected to approach 100% of world GDP by the end of the decade. The fund identified prolonged wars, cyberattacks and extreme weather events as factors increasing fiscal risks and exacerbating the global energy shock.

Meanwhile, the IMF slightly upgraded its forecast for global economic growth in 2026 by 0.1 percentage points to 3.1%. The global economy is projected to grow by 3.4% in 2027. The US economy is expected to expand by 2.3% in both years, while China’s growth is forecast at 4.5% in 2026 and 4% in 2027. India’s economy is projected to grow by 7% annually.

Editorial

The world has come a long way technologically. Today, one person, with one phone, can communicate with millions. That is not surprising in our new digital world, a world where an average smartphone is millions of times faster than the computer system that landed Apollo 11 on the moon. In today’s world, more than six billion people—three-quarters of the world population—now use the internet, and more than a billion of them follow Portuguese football (soccer) star Cristiano Ronaldo across social media platforms.

From months to moments

Adventist media has also come a long way. In the summer of 1849, a small group of fervent Advent believers knelt beside printed sheets of paper to ask God to bless all who would read the truth-filled pages. Those sheets were the eight-page pamphlet called Present Truth. Physically and emotionally exhausted after months of work on the pamphlet, James White, author of this new publication, trudged eight miles to the nearest town to post it.

Today, of course, any pastor can ask generative AI, such as ChatGPT, to help them write a feature. Then, with a couple of keystrokes, they can email it or post it on social media to an exponentially larger audience. All done in 30 minutes.

The Unopened Gift: A Call to Spiritual Revival

In the quiet corners of our churches and the private spaces of our hearts, a profound paradox exists: we possess the promise of an infinite power that we rarely dare to activate. While we spend years analyzing the theological dimensions of the Holy Spirit, we often leave the gift itself wrapped and untouched on the shelf. The upcoming "Unleashed" initiative, a ten-day global call to prayer, seeks to change that narrative by moving believers from spiritual observation to active, Spirit-led revival.

The foundation of this movement rests on a simple but radical premise: prayer is the birthplace of the miraculous. History has shown that when the faithful seek God with singular focus, the results are tangible—healed relationships, renewed passion for service, and a complete transformation of the human heart. As ancient scripture promises in Ezekiel, only the Divine Spirit can perform the "spiritual heart transplant" necessary to replace a hardened spirit with one that is vibrant and new.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Gen Z-led protests are making waves from Africa to Asia, and while the issues spurring them are different, the symbol they're using is the same: a grinning skull and crossbones wearing a straw hat.

It was there when young people angry with the lavish lifestyles of the elite brought down Nepal's government last month. It was visible in the Indonesian and Philippine protests this year, and again when Madagascan youth marched against chronic water and electricity shortages over the past 10 days. Right now, it's being waved at protests raging over poor healthcare in Morocco.

Why are frustrated youth taking to the streets worldwide raising this particular Jolly Roger?

The flag comes from a long-running Japanese anime and manga series called One Piece, about a rag-tag band of pirates dubbed "the straw hats," who are led by a cheerful character named Monkey D. Luffy and are fighting an oppressive world government.

It's become a global pop culture phenomenon, translated into multiple languages, and is now also a live-action Netflix series.

Sustainability and Economy of Life

“The world today is grappling with a convergence of unprecedented economic, political, social, and environmental crises,” reads the message from the World Council of Churches, World Communion of Reformed Churches, Lutheran World Federation, World Methodist Council, Council for World Mission, and United Society Partners in the Gospel.

The message notes that, while the wealth of multi-millionaires and billionaires continues to soar, the vast majority of people struggle with rising costs for basic necessities, such as food and housing, and declining living standards.

“This deepening inequality has eroded trust in public institutions, weakened democratic systems, enabled corporate influence over state policy, and hindered progress on urgent climate action, reinforcing a vicious cycle of disparity and disempowerment,” reads the message. “We are amid an escalating crisis of biodiversity loss and climate change that threatens livelihoods and poses an existential risk to all life on Earth.”

Climate change also worsens sovereign debt burdens, the message notes.
