Black Democrats are pushing for the party to vote on a bill to study reparations for descendants of slavery with the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre heightening the stakes, it was reported Tuesday.

“For those of us who went to Tulsa, it became even more apparent to us how important it is to pass H.R. 40 and to do so certainly before we leave for the August Recess,” Democratic Georgia Rep. Hank Johnson said, according to The Hill.

“We came away united with the strong feeling that now is the time to do [it]” he continued, noting victims of Greenwood nor their descendants were compensated for their losses. “And so we will now address leadership with this newfound sense of energy and urgency.”

“It’s always going to be inconvenient, but now is the time,” Johnson said, according to The Hill. “If you go back and look at the Tulsa situation and see how the people are still out there – have not been able to get redress for the wrongs that were done to them – I mean, if you can’t see reparations from that viewpoint, then you just don’t want to see reparation.”

President Joe Biden traveled to Tulsa to mark the solemn anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre (1921) in which a mob of armed white residents attacked the prosperous black community of Greenwood.

Approximately 300 black residents were killed and nearly 1,200 homes were burned to the ground. The event is noted as the worst incident of racial violence in U.S. history. (RELATED: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Demands ‘Reparations’ For Families Separated At The Border Under Trump)

Democratic California Rep. Barbara Lee, who once headed the Black Caucus, expressed a similar sentiment about the importance of the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre and reparations, according to the report.

“Tulsa is ground zero, I believe, in terms of raising the level of awareness and the why’s, and the importance of reparations and getting H.R. 40 passed,” she said, according to The Hill. “We’re pushing hard.”

“You have generational trauma. All of this is manifested today in much of what the Black community is still living with,” Lee said, according to The Hill. “And so this is a very important moment. It’s a day of reckoning, I think. And it’s time that this country live up to its promise of justice.”

H.R. 40, which is sponsored by Democratic Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, would establish a commission to study the history of slavery and its effects.

The House Judiciary Committee voted in April in favor of the bill. If the House votes in favor, the bill would allocate $20 million to create a 13-person commission to study the adverse effects of slavery and recommend remedies to Congress.

Legislation to create a commission to examine the possibility of reparations for American slavery had its first hearing ever in the U.S. Congress with U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee playing a lead role.

“H.R. 40 is, in fact, the response of the United States of America long overdue,” the Houston Democrat said of the bill she is sponsoring. “Slavery is the original sin. Slavery has never received an apology.”

Under Jackson Lee’s bill, a 13-member commission would be created to study the role of slavery in the U.S. and the “lingering negative effects of the institution of slavery” in America. The bill calls on the commission to consider reparations and how any compensation to descendants of enslaved Africans would be calculated.

“The role of the federal government supporting the institution of slavery and subsequent discrimination directed against blacks is an injustice that must be formally acknowledged and addressed,” Jackson Lee said during a 10-minute introduction of the legislation.

Jackson Lee noted the hearing was happening on Juneteenth, a day that commemorates a day 154 years ago when it was announced in Galveston that Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves. The news got to Texas two years after the president’s signing.

During the hearing, Jackson Lee said it’s time for the government to fully address the impact of slavery on America.

“I just simply ask: Why not and why not now?” she said.

While support is growing in the U.S. House for H.R. 40, the legislation faces a tougher battle in the Senate where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said earlier this week that he opposes reparations because “none of us currently living are responsible” for slavery.

Democrats vying for the 2020 presidential nomination have also taken up reparations, with former San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro and former El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke supporting further study of the matter. Sens. Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and Cory Booker of New Jersey have also signed on in one way or another.

Jackson Lee To Have Actor Danny Glover Speak On Reparations Next Week During House Hearing

The topic of reparations for slavery is headed to Capitol Hill for its first hearing in more than a decade with actor Danny Glover set to testify

Written by Wayne Dupree · 2 hours ago

One thing is for sure, any Democratic presidential hopeful that gets behind this issue will never be the president, like it or not. That’s a fact.

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in February that she supports a reparations study, a topic that hasn’t been the subject of a House hearing since 2007.”

So it was brought up right before the 2008 election. Nothing came about from it when they had the presidency and control of the House and the Senate. And now that election time is coming around again and they need to get more seats and want the white house back it comes up again. And this time, they plan on using actor Danny Glover to deliver a dramatic performance on why it should be passed.

An audit needs to be conducted on how many hours our elected officials spend hearing from unqualified celebrities instead of their everyday constituents and qualified experts. There are exceptions like Jon Stewart, but for the most part, this seems like a boondoggle to glad-hand celebrities and drum up support for future campaigns.

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties is scheduled to hold the hearing next Wednesday, its stated purpose “to examine, through open and constructive discourse, the legacy of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, its continuing impact on the community and the path to restorative justice.” The date of the hearing, June 19, coincides with Juneteenth, a cultural holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved black people in America.
