CPAC 2013: events (Dr. Ben Carson speech)

CPAC 2013: Dr. Ben Carson Speaks At CPAC, AMSA On Same Day

CPAC 2013 Dr Ben Carson Speaks At CPAC AMSA On Same Day

Dr. Ben Carson’s much anticipated Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) speech Saturday wasn’t the only speech he'd delivered in Washington over the weekend. A few hours after his speech at the Gaylord National at National Harbor, Carson spoke to several hundred medical students, pre-meds, and residents at the American Medical Student Association’s Annual Conference at the Washington Convention Center.

Dr. Ben Carson is best known in the medical community for being the first surgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins who had been joined at the back of the head, but he made political headlines and scored an invite to CPAC this year after making sharp criticisms of Washington and the Obama administration at this year’s National Prayer breakfast.

AMSA, known for its very progressive political agenda is the oldest and largest medical student association in the United States and outright supports single-payer, government-run health care. The group once was affiliated with the American Medical Association but established its independence from the AMA in an effort to raise its own voice on a variety of social justice issues including civil rights, abortion, universal health care and the United States involvement in Vietnam, a stark contrast to the CPAC crowd Dr. Carson addressed just hours earlier.

While the organization does not accept funding from pharmaceutical companies, AMSA offers discounted study guide materials to medical students, boosting the organization’s membership numbers, funding and political clout, as the discounts on study guides are well worth the membership expense to apolitical medical students who may or may not agree with the organization’s strong-leftist political agenda.

Dr. Carson, a trailblazing neurosurgeon, Obamacare critic and founder of the Carson Scholars Fund was well received at the event and received a standing ovation following his speech alongside another celebrity status, rags to riches, American story, Johns Hopkins colleague Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa. However, Dr. Carson who ventured into some wonky policy areas during his speech left many future doctors who had never heard of a Health Savings Account scratching their heads.

Many were unaware of Dr. Carson’s speech from the National Prayer breakfast that went viral in hours, or that Dr. Carson had just announced his retirement from medicine a few hours earlier at CPAC continuing a firestorm of rumors that he may seek political office in the future.

In a departure from his fiery, traditional talking points on political correctness, personal responsibility and hard work, Dr. Carson challenged physicians, and physicians-in-training to re-engage the medical profession that was once more active in civic and political life. Dr. Carson explained that 5 physicians signed the Declaration of Independence and that “we [doctors] need to put forth things that work for patients.” He acknowledged this “would require courage” but told students “not to be afraid to take risks by speaking out” and said that it was their “duty to protect good health care by entering the political sphere.”

Dr. Carson cited the rise of physicians entering  “concierge medicine” as disappointing, but said he understood the reasoning behind their decisions given the power welded over the profession by government, big hospitals/ACOs that are buying physician practices, and third-party insurance payers. Perhaps the most direct challenge to the audience was Carson’s charge that it was physician’s duty not to spend the entirety of their medical training and career that is “subsidized by everyone” (most all medical schools are supported through tax dollars) solely “in a lab or practicing medicine 24/7.”

He warned the young audience “if you leave your medical career up to politicians, you will be in trouble.”

Dr. Carson’s most recent, best-selling book, America the Beautiful serves as his manifesto, calling all Americans to use our God-given talents to improve our lives, our communities, our nation, and our world. Time will tell if his message will be enough to resonate with voters, should he chose a political future, but his ability to stand in front of two polar opposite political groups on one Saturday goes to show that he epitomizes the courage he seeks to instill in everyone around him.

The Media, Extremists and Conspiracies, Part Two

AIM Column By Cliff Kincaid March 2, 2010

A contributor to The Nation, TomPaine.com, Mother Jones, and Rolling Stone, Dreyfuss spoke at the New America Foundation on the topic of the “phony clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West.

The Politico piece, "Conservatives Target Their Own Fringe," attempts to identify various extremists within the conservative movement, including the "militia" movement. Writer Kenneth P. Vogel suggests that they include the Oath Keepers who helped co-sponsor the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). But Vogel's effort to link this group to the militia movement, which some people associate with the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, is a charge not backed up by any evidence in the article.

However, the Oath Keepers do have some explaining to do, such as why they associate with Russia Today television favorite Alex Jones, the prominent 9/11 "truther." Jones may posture as a conservative, but he is anything but one.

Oath Keepers is supposed to include currently serving military, veterans, police officers, and firefighters. "Our oath is to the Constitution, not to the politicians, and we will not obey unconstitutional (and thus illegal) and immoral orders, such as orders to disarm the American people or to place them under martial law and deprive them of their ancient right to jury trial," the Oath Keepers say. "We Oath Keepers have drawn a line in the sand. We will not 'just follow orders. Our motto is 'Not on our watch!'"

The movement is reminiscent of the grass-roots outrage which emerged after Army Specialist Michael New refused orders to deploy to a United Nations-controlled military operation and was court-martialed under the Clinton Administration and discharged for bad conduct. His father Daniel New and I wrote a book about the case, titled, Michael New: Mercenary or American Soldier. Ominously, advisers to Barack Obama have recommended that he order more U.S. troops to serve the United Nations, in violation of the U.S. Constitution, the law, and soldiers' military oaths.

The trouble is that Oath Keeper Founder Stewart Rhodes and members of his group have closely collaborated with Alex Jones, who is strongly critical of the U.S. military presence in the world and even defended the Russian invasion of the former Soviet republic and now independent country of Georgia. The new Jones film, "Fall of the Republic," has an "extra" feature promoting the Oath Keepers.

Interestingly, Jones has become a regular on Russia Today (RT), the English-language state-owned TV propaganda channel for the Russian government. Last September Russia Today aired a three-part television series about 9/11 being an "inside job."

RT, which has a studio in Washington, D.C., broadcasts in New York, Los Angeles, and the Washington, D.C. area on various cable systems.

Russia Today's Anti-Americanism

More recently, RT has been taking out ads featuring superimposed images of President Barack Obama and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and asking "Who poses the greater nuclear threat?" The implication is that the U.S. nuclear arsenal is as much of a threat--or more--than nuclear weapons in the hands of Muslim fanatics in Iran.

Another RT ad compares U.S. military troops to Islamic terrorists.

Like its Soviet-era predecessors, Russia Today television tends to emphasize stories and interviews that make the United States look bad internationally. As Heritage Foundation scholars Ariel Cohen and Helle C. Dale note in a new study, "The Kremlin is using anti-Americanism as a strategic tool for pursuing domestic and foreign policy goals. Through media controlled or owned by the state, the Russian government is deliberately spreading poisonous anti-U.S. propaganda at home and abroad, blaming many of Russia's problems on the West, particularly the United States."

In the report, "Revolution is the Solution," RT interviewed Carl Dix of the Revolutionary Communist Party about the need for a communist revolution in the U.S. The Russian interviewer sits there stone-faced.

On August 13, 2008, after Russia invaded its former Republic of Georgia, now an independent state, with thousands of troops, RT aired an interview with Gloria La Riva of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, blaming U.S. imperialism for the conflict. Four days later, La Riva was quoted on RT again, urging the U.S. to stay out of the region.

Defending Russia

Alex Jones, described as "the U.S. investigative journalist," was himself on RT on August 26, 2008, insisting that the U.S. "private international military industrial complex" had "launched a sneak attack" on the "Russian enclaves" in Georgia in order to support the "U.S.-backed Georgians [and] the Israeli- and NATO-backed Georgians." Jones said the U.S. was guilty of "unprecedented crimes" and urged Russia to continue to occupy the regions it had invaded.

"I apologize as an American that we have let our government be taken over like this," said Jones, who went on to blame "the neo-cons in NATO, in the U.S. and Israel" who "want to have a new Cold War."

Some of Jones' other appearances on the Russia Today propaganda network, according to the channel's website, include:

April 7, 2009. "U.S. is a puppet of private bankers." This story, about the Jones film, "The Obama Deception," claims "America has become a puppet in the hands of private bankers working towards a new world order."
April 29, 2009. "Obama is a would-be dictator." The description reads, "In his first hundred days in office US President Barack Obama has been riding a wave of worldwide support, but not everyone in the US is convinced by his performance, such as prominent radio host Alex Jones."
May 20, 2009. "Alex Jones: the Evil Intent of the Bilderberg Club."
July 14, 2009. "Soviet and American Leaders were in cahoots." The description reads, "As radio host Alex Jones alleged in a recent documentary, it's all supposed to have happened at Bohemian Grove in California, a venue for the world's controlling elite to rub shoulders."
November 23, 2009. "The U.S. Needs a Peaceful Revolution." The description reads, "In an exclusive interview with RT's Anastasia Churkina, an American talk radio host and film director Alex Jones reveals an alternative side of recent US policies." This is about the film "Fall of the Republic."
February 6, 2010. "Radio host Alex Jones sees the new steps to protect the US from cyber attacks as attempts to curb the freedom of speech."
The Alex Jones website www.infowars.net is also consulted by Russia Today television for story ideas, such as when it was cited as the source of the May 2, 2009, claim that U.S. drug companies were responsible for the swine flu outbreak.

"Barack H. Obama, who ran as an anti-war candidate, has continued the war in Iraq, massively expanded the war in Afghanistan, and unleashed a new conflict in Pakistan," Jones says in his new "Fall of the Republic" film. "Obama is promoting the biggest defense budget in history, dwarfing George Bush's war machine."

"Obama expanded Bush's doctrine of indefinite detention of foreigners without trial," Jones says, then proving his point by showing a clip of liberal lesbian commentator Rachel Maddow lamenting on her MSNBC-TV program that Obama had endorsed a policy of "prolonged detention" for accused terrorists.

So Alex Jones and Rachel Maddow are both critics of Obama from the left. Perhaps they can appear on each other's shows.

The Lyndon LaRouche Connection

Jones, who attracts some conservatives to his cause by blending some conservative information into his films, relies heavily on Webster Tarpley, a former member of the Lyndon LaRouche organization which specializes in blaming Zionists, Britain and the Queen of England for the world's problems. Rather than being any kind of conservative, LaRouche is a former Marxist and Democratic Party presidential candidate who served prison time on financial fraud charges. His group got its start as a faction of the Students for a Democratic Society. It was then known as the National Caucus of Labor Committees.

Back in the 1980s, the LaRouche movement was considered a mouthpiece for a pro-Soviet line in foreign affairs. Its members specialized in confusing conservatives about communist and Soviet intentions.

Tarpley, who appears prominently in "Fall of the Republic," as well as Jones' previous film, "The Obama Deception," wrote a book about Obama insisting that his childhood mentor, Communist Party member Frank Marshall Davis, was not a true Marxist and that Karl Marx himself was a British agent.

Tarpley's ideas get around on the right and left. At the 2007 national left-wing "media reform" conference, sponsored by the George Soros-funded Free Press, Tarpley's books were being sold along with volumes by popular "progressives" such as Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn. Tarpley was a special guest for two hours on the now-bankrupt Air America liberal radio network. His website touts his appearances on the Russia Today television network, including a recent case in which he asserted that "The recent failed attack on a US passenger jet traveling from Amsterdam to Detroit was a set-up provocation controlled by US intelligence..."

Tarpley's books are available through the interestingly-named Progressive Press.

But don't look for any stories about how "progressive" collaboration with Alex Jones and Webster Tarpley constitutes a problem for the liberal establishment.

The Nation Magazine's LaRouche Connection

In this context, it is interesting to note that The Nation magazine, a premier "progressive" publication, features the writings of Robert Dreyfuss, another former LaRouche collaborator.

A contributor to The Nation, TomPaine.com, Mother Jones, and Rolling Stone, Dreyfuss spoke at the New America Foundation on the topic of the "phony clash of civilizations" between Islam and the West. When he worked for LaRouche, Dreyfuss specialized in exposing "Zionist" plots. His current focus is writing against the U.S. "occupation" of Iraq and arguing that the U.S. can accept a nuclear-armed Iran.

The Nation editor Katrina vanden Heuvel employs Dreyfuss, who writes a blog for the publication, and praises the return of communist "truther" Van Jones to the Center for American Progress. "Yes, it was a misstep to sign a 911truth.org petition," she writes. "But Jones repudiated his signature and said the petition's wording didn't then and doesn't now represent his views."

She says nothing about his involvement in the revolutionary communist STORM (Standing Together To Organize a Revolutionary Movement) organization, which also caused scrutiny of his views, and why his resignation statement was written by White House officials with no input from Jones himself. Information linking Van Jones to Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett and Obama himself appeared just before it was announced that Jones was resigning.

That's also when our media dropped the story.

The Media, Extremists and Conspiracies, Part One

AIM Column By Cliff Kincaid March 1, 2010

According to Vogel, whose story is about ferreting out alleged extremists from the conservative ranks, there is a “new approach” to purging these elements…

A story by Kenneth P. Vogel in the Politico, under the headline, "Conservatives Target Their Own Fringe," insists that "the conservative establishment" is launching a purge of "extremist elements" from the conservative movement. However, these extremists are conspicuously not identified in the article as the "gay conservatives" who co-sponsored the recent Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). These are the "anal sex practitioners," as Howard Phillips of the Conservative Caucus prefers to calls them.

This Phillips term is not intended to demean anyone; it is descriptive of what male homosexuals do. Such unnatural and extreme behavior, in addition to being dangerous, makes a mockery of the traditional moral and religious values that conservatives hold dear.

Vogel, however, claims the homosexuals were actually welcomed, by virtue of the fact that there was "jeering" of "an anti-gay activist at CPAC who condemned organizers for inviting gay Republican group GOProud to participate."

What he ignores is the evidence that the "jeering" came mostly from non-conservatives, many of them libertarians, and that the "anti-gay activist," Ryan Sorba of Young Americans for Freedom, was rebutting a pro-gay speaker, a leader of a group who told me he wasn't a conservative in the first place.

To clear things up for Kenneth Vogel and others in the media, let us make it clear that a true conservative like Howard Phillips, who has been a leader in the conservative movement for several decades, understands that conservatism means traditional moral and religious values, a strong national defense, and economic freedom. There is nothing complicated or confusing about it. The homosexual movement, founded by a member of the Communist Party by the name of Harry Hay, simply doesn't qualify for admission, no matter how many libertarians in the CPAC audience may applaud for GOProud or jeer Ryan Sorba.

In order to purge the conservative movement of its extremists, CPAC will have to remove its own organizers who let them in.

Defining the "Fringe"

The story ignores the real problem of how the "conservative establishment"-in the form of the CPAC organizers--picked actual and real extremists to co-sponsor their event. And those were the self-described "gay conservatives" who reject the social conservatism that has been an essential part of the conservative movement. The well-established and well-known Family Research Council pulled out of CPAC because CPAC organizer David Keene decided to allow GOProud, a relatively new organization that works for the election of "centrist" and liberal Republicans, into the event. But this mistake is overlooked by Vogel.

The "conservative establishment" is not defined in the Vogel article, but the "extremists" are said to be the "birther, truther or militia movements or the John Birch Society."

According to Vogel, whose story is about ferreting out alleged extremists from the conservative ranks, there is a "new approach" to purging these elements but it has "drawbacks" that were said to be on display at CPAC, such as the inclusion of John Birch Society as a co-sponsor. Vogel added, "And while conference organizers nixed a panel on Obama's citizenship, a birther contingent still made its presence felt, as did the Oath Keepers, who co-sponsored the conference."

Vogel describes the Oath Keepers as a "militia-linked group," an obvious effort to tie them to the armed citizen organizations blamed by some for the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. But his evidence is a New York Times article describing Oath Keepers as "a new player in a resurgent militia movement." This article, in turn, talks about "informal ties" between the groups, whatever that means.

Of far more serious concern is close collaboration between the Oath Keepers and radio host Alex Jones, who has become a favorite of Russian television and actually went on the Russia Today network to defend the Kremlin's invasion of the independent state of Georgia. (More on this in the second part of this series).

The "birther" presence at CPAC was said to be, through the link in Vogel's story, one "Philip J. Berg, a Pennsylvania lawyer and Hillary Clinton supporter," who has demanded documentation in court of Obama's U.S. citizenship and was at CPAC. So the "birther" movement actually crosses ideological lines.

Political Conspiracies

The John Birch Society (JBS), which tends to be known for a conspiracy view of history, is said to be an organization that must be purged from the conservative movement. MSNBC-TV lesbian commentator Rachel Maddow, who would never do a story about how Communist Harry Hay founded the gay rights movement, hammered away at JBS co-sponsorship of CPAC because, she said, the JBS believes in too many conspiracies about communist plots.

To begin with, as we all know, political conspiracies do exist. That is why scandals happen. If anybody wants evidence of a political conspiracy, they should look no further than Michael Calderone's 1,500-word Politico story about how former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards concealed and lied about his adulterous affair. The major media failure to vet Edwards "is worrisome in a changed political world where politicians--be they Barack Obama or Sarah Palin--can burst upon the national stage and seemingly overnight become candidates for higher office," Calderone argues.

The difference, of course, is that Palin was savaged and scrutinized by the media while Obama was given a pass on such matters as his mentoring by Communist Party member Frank Marshall Davis and Davis's 600-page FBI file. Our media didn't and don't want to go there.

Communism was and is a conspiracy. Without commenting on every charge made by the JBS or its leaders over the years, its central claim--that U.S. leaders are working with the communists and others to lay the groundwork for world government--cannot be dismissed out of hand. Objectively speaking, one has to admit that talk of global taxes and world government is frequently in the news and cannot be said to be the fantasies of the "black helicopter" crowd. Even the Pope has stated his belief in a "World Political Authority." His own Vatican newspaper published a favorable review of Marxist theory.

At this late date, no one can seriously doubt that a "New World Order" of some kind is coming into being. The real questions are to what extent it is being deliberately designed to subvert America's standing in the world and the American way of life, and what role President Obama is playing in it.

Critics of the JBS have to concede the organization has been on the right track about an emerging world government.

On the matter of the so-called truthers and birthers, these are two entirely different issues. People at 9/11 "truth movement" gatherings are from both the right and left. They include talk show host Alex Jones, supposedly on the right, and communist Van Jones, on the left. They share a deep suspicion of government being dominated by corporations and intelligence agencies, which are supposed to be pulling the strings behind the scenes.

The 9/11 Intelligence Failure

In the case of 9/11, however, there is abundant evidence of a massive intelligence failure that led to the Muslim attacks. The real question is whether the mistakes have been corrected and whether government officials responsible for this intelligence failure have been held accountable. The answer to that is clearly no.

The 9/11 "truthers" ignore the fact that, if U.S. officials orchestrated 9/11, why couldn't these same officials have planted weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in order to justify the overthrow of the Saddam Hussein regime? That would have been relatively easy, compared to the complicated and elaborate schemes required to strike the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and then to blame the attacks on Muslims hijacking U.S. commercial aircraft.

If 9/11 had been a conspiracy by elements of the U.S. Government, why, then, didn't they pin the blame for the post 9/11 anthrax attacks on Al Qaeda as well? The FBI, however, has adamantly refused to do so, in the face of evidence actually linking members of this Muslim terrorist group to the anthrax murders. As we have argued, this demonstrates stupidity and incompetence by government officials to the point of corruption. The problem in the federal government under the Bush and Obama Administrations is the failure to understand and address the Islamic threat, not the orchestration or sponsorship of that threat.

While conservatives are being urged to purge "truthers" from their ranks, "truther" Van Jones is returning to the George Soros-funded Center for American Progress (CAP), which has supplied personnel and ideas to the Obama Administration. Indeed, Jones worked previously for CAP before he went to his White House job.

The 9/11 "inside job" claims are a diversion from the serious effort to analyze and hold accountable those in the government who failed to do their jobs of preventing the attacks on America. It is no surprise that the Al-Jazeera and Russia Today government-funded propaganda channels have been promoting the 9/11 "truth movement," knowing that it deflects attention away from the real perpetrators of these terrorist acts and inspires even more hatred of America.

The "Birthers"

The "birther" issue is quite different. In his piece, Vogel defines birthers as "conservatives who believe that Obama was not born in the United States and is, therefore, ineligible to be president." As we have seen, however, the "birther" at CPAC cited in his article is a Hillary Clinton Democrat.

This is an issue that crosses ideological lines because honest liberals recognize the simple fact that the copy of the birth certificate released by the Obama campaign is lacking in basic and essential information about who attended the birth and in what hospital it took place. One of the prominent skeptics regarding the authenticity of this document is former CIA officer Larry Johnson, a supporter of Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primaries.

Glenn Beck has said brief newspaper notices about Obama's birth add to the evidence that he was indeed born in Hawaii. But they, too, are lacking in essential information, such as the name of the hospital and attending physician.

By releasing a copy of my own birth certificate, I have tried to demonstrate what other necessary information is lacking about Obama's birth. The only way to address these questions is to identify where exactly he was born, in what hospital, and what doctor was present. All of this information should be on an original birth certificate. There is some unexplained reason why this document has not been released. That is why the "birther" issue is still legitimate and why Beck and others should not cavalierly dismiss those like Joseph Farah of WorldNetDaily who are willing to keep asking the hard questions.

So-called "conservatives" in the media, such as those mentioned in the Vogel Politico story who refuse to tolerate even the asking of serious questions about Obama's background, have either been intimidated by the liberal/left or are afraid of doing the hard work required to get answers. In any case, they are not part of any "conservative establishment" and have no claim of influence over the conservative media as a whole. Indeed, they give conservative journalism a bad name.
