Major fire breaks out in Alberta after deadly incident at Canadian military base

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Canada's defense minister said Saturday that people were killed and injured in an incident at a military base in Alberta that caused a major fire, while reports said that large numbers of injured people were transported to hospitals.
Fire crews scrambled late into the night as fierce winds whipped flames beyond Canadian Forces Base Wainwright and into the surrounding rural area.
It was not immediately clear how many people were killed or injured, but a doctor at a hospital in the city of Edmonton, 180 kilometers (120 miles) northwest, told Canada's national broadcaster that patients were being brought to hospitals across the city as healthcare facilities around the base became "completely overwhelmed" by the number of people needing care.
"This number of patients would overwhelm the city of Edmonton," Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, told CBC News. "It is more patients than any of us want to count right now. It's a disaster. It's a one in every 15- to 25-year disaster."
Acute Care Alberta said several hospitals across the province had activated a "Code Orange," an emergency designation used when multiple severely injured patients require coordinated medical care. The agency said emergency medical resources were stretched so thin that extremely few ambulances were available in the Edmonton area. It urged people to avoid the University of Alberta Hospital emergency department if possible.
Wainwright Mayor Bruce Pugh said the town's small hospital was not designed to handle a mass-casualty incident but praised the response of local medical personnel. He said helicopters and planes had been transporting patients to other facilities for treatment.

Four dead and thousands without power after Hurricane Isaias lashes US

Watch: Florida thrashed as Hurricane Isaias makes landfall
Four people have died and hundreds of thousands are without power after Hurricane Isaias battered parts of the southern US with powerful winds and heavy rain.
Officials reported two deaths each in the states of Alabama and Florida, which included people who were killed when trees fell on their houses.
An estimated 500,000 people in total were without power in several states as of Saturday evening, according to tracker PowerOutage.
Isaias made landfall in Florida late on Friday with maximum sustained winds of 105mph (168km/h) before being downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone.
The storm felled trees and ripped the roofs off buildings. Alabama, Florida and Georgia all declared states of emergency ahead of its arrival, while both Florida and Alabama issued mandatory evacuation orders to thousands of people.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Simon is bearing down on Mexico's Pacific coast and has strengthened to category four. It is expected to make landfall sometime overnight.
Tropical Storm Rachel, also in the Pacific Ocean, is expected to hit southern California later on Saturday.

Hurricane Isaias made landfall in Destin, Florida late Thursday night — packing 105 MPH sustained winds, a devastating 9-foot storm surge, and catastrophic flash flooding across the Gulf Coast. As of this morning, 668,000 customers are without power across Florida and Alabama, with Mobile County and Baldwin County taking the hardest hit. Flash Flood Emergencies were issued across southern Okaloosa County as 4–7 inches of rain dropped in just hours. Storm surge warnings remain active from the Alabama-Florida border to Grayton Beach. Isaias is now pushing north through Alabama at 20 MPH — tornado watches, additional flooding, and downed power lines are still active threats RIGHT NOW.
This is the first U.S. hurricane landfall in two years — and it happened fast. Isaias went from a tropical depression to a Category 2 in just 48 hours, thanks to record-warm Gulf waters and collapsed wind shear. The Gulf was basically rocket fuel.
⚠️ Turn Around, Don’t Drown. 12 inches of water can float your car. 2 feet will sweep away an SUV. Do NOT drive around barricades — the road may be completely washed out underneath.
Stay safe. Monitor weather.gov, floridadisaster.org, or ema.alabama.gov for real-time updates.
Lesson learned: hurricane season isn’t over until it’s over. One quiet season can end in 48 hours. Have your go-bag ready, know your evacuation zone, and never wait for the last warning.

Jamaica: Update on Hurricane Relief Efforts
10 November 2025
Father Bede Mullens OP reports from Jamaica on the relief efforts supported by our donors.
Assistance in our Parishes
We are based in Kingston, which mercifully was left largely unscathed by the hurricane. Nonetheless, some of our poorer parishioners in August Town, an impoverished neighbourhood, did lose roofs, walls, and in one case, pretty much the whole house; St Martin’s Missions funding has enabled purchase of materials for repairs.
We are also conscious that, after recent panic-buying, some food items are hard to come by, and food prices on the whole are set to go up in the coming months as the part of the island hardest hit is a major agricultural area. On Friday, we distributed 300 meals to students at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus and to several of our less well-off parishioners, and we are trying to arrange sponsorship from local benefactors for students in need to receive support for food and personal hygiene items.

Helping the Worst-Hit Areas
As regards the island-wide situation, we have been able to establish contact with a couple of parishes in the vicinity of Montego Bay and, for the time being, are focussing our attention on assisting them. We have coordinated provision of basic building materials (tarpaulin, plywood, nails) and essentials like water and baby food to be transported to Sacred Heart church in Reading, near Montego Bay, and St Agnes’ church in Chester Castle (photos below). One of the churches is currently operating as a shelter with just half a roof! So the arrival of the tarpaulins tomorrow will be particularly useful.
As the roads open and we are able to make contact with further parishes, we will be looking to assist their efforts at rebuilding and supporting their local people on the basis of personal contacts. This small-scale way of promoting the relief effort is particularly valuable for building up bonds of charity among the Catholics within our local island Church, and indeed throughout the global Church. So far people have donated to our St Martin’s Missions Appeal from across the UK, the USA, Europe, and the Far East. There is, of course, a massive need for material assistance, but for us it is very important that St Martin’s Missions bears witness to our worldwide solidarity in the Body of Christ. We belong to a Church that is at once truly catholic and truly one, at once global and personal.

St Martin’s Missions has not directly supported this church, but Fr Bede has been coordinating assistance from Aquinas parish and other local benefactors in Jamaica to help them.
More Help Needed
The Dominican Friars in Jamaica and Grenada rely on funds raised in the UK to support their work of spreading the gospel and providing material help to the poor. This year, as well as having to raise funds to support these usual needs, we are committed to providing additional funds in support of the Hurricane Melissa relief efforts.

Members of the Jamaica Defence Force hand out care packages to residents of Crane Road in St Elizabeth.
Three separate vehicles carrying food, water and other basic supplies drew long lines of residents desperate to get anything as night fell over the hurricane-ravaged town of Black River, St Elizabeth, on Friday.
The town remains without electricity, water and Internet connectivity, three days after the category 5 Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica.
One of the trucks was provided by Jamaican international recording artiste Shaggy, real name Orville Burrell. The others were an army vehicle and one provided by a popular fast food chain.
“Thank you very much,” Cynthia White, 53, whispered to a soldier after she secured a care package of basic food items.
