Fact-check: Has the US had more foodborne illnesses and recalls than previous years?

Pastor Hal MayerSpeaker / Director
WRAL News, by Madison Czopek: The eggs are contaminated with salmonella. Frozen berries have been linked to an E. coli outbreak. Iceberg lettuce and who knows what else might give you explosive diarrhea. Some people have endured the barrage of frightening food news with dark humor.
“So the bread has glass in it, the lettuce has diarrhea bacteria, the eggs have salmonella,” wrote one Facebook user, poking at recalls of Pillsbury bread rolls for possible glass contamination and iceberg lettuce for cyclospora contamination. “At this point, grocery shopping is just an overpriced episode of Fear Factor.”
The jokes can be funny, but the unanswered question behind them is not: Is our food becoming less safe?
The U.S. food supply is “among the safest in the world,” said Steven Mandernach, the Association of Food and Drug Officials’ executive director. “It’s always been among the safest in the world. I see nothing that has changed.”
But it’s notoriously difficult to answer in real-time whether our food is getting less safe, food safety experts said. Most expect the Trump administration’s cuts to federal, state and local public health entities to weaken the nation’s food safety guardrails in the long run. Whether that is playing out in the short term is less clear.
Here’s what else we learned from food safety experts, and diving into the data.
The cyclosporiasis situation doesn’t prove food safety is rapidly declining.
Yes, record-breaking numbers of domestically obtained cyclosporiasis cases recorded in 45 states have heightened food safety concerns.

There are two separate things going on in this video, and it matters that they do not get blurred together. The first is what somebody says once they are caught. Hardly anybody argues they did not do it — they argue about what it was for, and the sentence that keeps surfacing is some version of I needed to feed my family. That may be true and it may be a line, and there is no way to tell which from the outside.
The second thing is not people at all. It is equipment. A camera counting you. A check at the door. A glass case you have to ring a bell for. All of it signed off as an answer to the first thing, and all of it landing on the ninety-nine who paid. That is the part nobody explained to anyone who shops in one of these stores, and it is the part this video is really about.

Economic D-Day and the Prophesied Buy and Sell Restrictions

President Trump's announced "Economic D-Day" is a modern geopolitical campaign to totally isolate Iran, while "prophetic buy and sell restrictions" refer to biblical end-times prophecies about a centralized system controlling global commerce.
The "Economic D-Day" Against Iran
The Announcement: U.S. President Donald Trump declared an unprecedented financial operation to cut off Iran's remaining economic lifelines. Details were covered by sources like Iran International.
The Goal: The strategy targets oil smuggling, cash transfers, and front companies to force Tehran to halt its nuclear program and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The Penalties: The U.S. administration warned that any foreign country, bank, or business continuing to trade with Iran will face severe secondary economic consequences.
Prophetic Buy and Sell Restrictions
The Biblical Source: In the New Testament book of Revelation (Revelation 13:17), prophecy speaks of a future system where no one can buy or sell unless they have the "mark, name, or number" of the beast.
The Interpretation: Many theologians and believers view this as a total restriction on personal economic freedom for those who refuse to comply with a future global authority.
Modern Parallels: Commentators often link current events—such as strict international banking sanctions, asset freezes, and the rise of digital currencies—to the potential framework for future prophetic economic controls.
How They Connect
"Economic D-Day" is a specific political and military-linked sanction strategy against a single nation. However, prophetic observers often use these sweeping government actions and threats of total financial isolation as modern examples of how quickly global trade can be restricted.

Senate Approves Bill That Could End Pennies And Change Cash Payments Across The U.S.
The U.S. Senate has approved the Common Cents Act, a bill that could end new penny production, introduce changes to the nickel and reshape how Americans handle cash payments at stores across the country.

The U.S. Senate has passed a bill that could reshape the future of American coins by ending new penny production, changing cash transaction rules and opening the door to a redesigned nickel. The Common Cents Act received unanimous consent approval from the Senate, moving the legislation closer to becoming law after a similar version passed the House of Representatives.
The proposal addresses growing concerns about the cost of producing low-value coins and the challenges businesses face when handling cash payments without enough pennies available for change. If enacted, the bill would allow businesses to round cash transactions to the nearest five-cent increment while keeping existing pennies legal tender.
It would also give the Treasury Department authority to test a cheaper material composition for the nation’s five-cent coin. The legislation could mark one of the biggest changes to everyday U.S. currency use in decades.
Senate Bill Targets Penny Production And Cash Payment Challenges
According to The Hill, the Common Cents Act focuses on three major areas of U.S. currency policy: ending regular penny production, creating a national framework for cash rounding and exploring a new nickel design. The bill comes after the United States produced its final one-cent coin for circulation last year.
Although no new pennies are being made for everyday use, existing coins remain valid currency and can continue circulating throughout the economy. The disappearance of newly produced pennies has created challenges for some retailers that rely on cash transactions.
Without enough one-cent coins available, businesses have had difficulty providing exact change to customers. Under the proposed system, cash purchases would be rounded to the closest nickel.
For example, a transaction totaling $19.82 could become $19.80, while a purchase ending in $19.83 could be adjusted to $19.85. Supporters of the legislation argue that a nationwide rule would reduce confusion caused by different state and local regulations regarding cash rounding.

The Council for Inclusive Capitalism with the Vatican Launches
By Council Staff
December 08, 2020
THE COUNCIL ANSWERS THE CHALLENGE BY POPE FRANCIS TO APPLY PRINCIPLES OF MORALITY TO BUSINESS AND INVESTMENT PRACTICES
ORGANIZATIONS COMMIT TO CONCRETE ACTION TO CREATE A MORE EQUITABLE, SUSTAINABLE AND TRUSTED ECONOMIC SYSTEM
The Council for Inclusive Capitalism with the Vatican, an effort led by some of the world’s largest investment and business leaders, launched today. It signifies the urgency of joining moral and market imperatives to reform capitalism into a powerful force for the good of humanity. Under the moral guidance of His Holiness Pope Francis and His Eminence Cardinal Peter Turkson, who leads the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development at the Vatican, and inspired by the moral imperative of all faiths, the Council invites companies of all sizes to harness the potential of the private sector to build a fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable economic foundation for the world.
The Council is led by a core group of global leaders, known as Guardians for Inclusive Capitalism, who meet annually with Pope Francis and Cardinal Turkson. These leaders represent more than $10.5 trillion in assets under management, companies with over $2.1 trillion of market capitalization, and 200 million workers in over 163 countries. The organization challenges business and investment leaders of all sizes to embrace the Council’s guiding principles and make public commitments to act on them. These collective actions are intended to lead to systemic change by making capitalism a greater force for inclusivity and sustainability. Watch a video of the Guardians discussing the Council’s mission here.
Speaking to the Guardians, Pope Francis said, “An economic system that is fair, trustworthy, and capable of addressing the most profound challenges facing humanity and our planet is urgently needed. You have taken up the challenge by seeking ways to make capitalism become a more inclusive instrument for integral human wellbeing.”
The Guardians have already committed to hundreds of measurable actions, and Council members will make ongoing commitments to continue to advance inclusive capitalism. They will be accountable for their public commitments and invite businesses around the world to join. View the full list of actions being taken here.

Girl Scouts highly unimpressed after New Jersey troop teams up with local cannabis dispensary to sell cookies
Girl Scout cookie season runs from January through April
Senior leaders at the Girl Scouts are reportedly displeased that a New Jersey troop teamed up with a local weed dispensary to sell their beloved cookies.
Set up near Daylite Dispensary in Mount Laurel last month, the troop’s booth offered the full line-up of treats. Dispensary owner Steve Cassidy said the partnership was a massive success and drew people both to the booth and the cannabis shop.
However, Cassidy said he had spoken to representatives from the organization about the incident, which had been intended as a positive venture, but may have landed the troop in hot water.
“It was about community,” Cassidy told The Independent. “If that means the local Girl Scout troop got in trouble, that is absolutely not what we wanted.” He declined to comment further.
The Independent has contacted the Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey, the Girl Scout council that oversees troops in the region, for comment. It is unclear which exact troop staged the event.

Summary
To end America’s family crisis, policymakers and civic leaders should treat restoring the family home as a matter of justice, driven by two truths. The first is that all children have a right to the affection and protection of the man and woman who created them. The second is that the ideal environment in which to exercise this right is in a loving and stable home with their married biological parents. In contrast, the default in American culture today is to put the desires of adults over the needs of children. Children are too often called to sacrifice what is due to them—the presence of their mom and dad under the same roof for the entirety of their childhood.
Key Takeaways
- The family is the foundation of civilization, and marriage—the committed union of one man and one woman—is its cornerstone. It is the seedbed of self-government.
- The question that will determine the course of America’s future is: What happens to a nation when its citizens largely stop having children and eschew marriage?
- The only way for America to thrive in the future is to rebuild the family—which can only happen with a societal commitment to revive the institution of marriage.
Day-of-rest laws limiting commercial activity are usually found in less densely populated counties, although restrictions on alcohol sales are more widespread. Though greatly diminished, blue laws persist in some form in close to 28 states.141
A uniform day of rest that limits commercial activity can provide temporal boundaries that help communities to set aside time for religious observance, family gatherings, outdoor activities, and rest. A stable base of research shows that these practices correlate with better mental health, stronger social bonds, and more stable family structures.142
With the advent of on-demand delivery, shopping can be shifted easily and conveniently to other days of the week. By restoring a common rhythm of rest and reflection, community rest laws could help to reverse the trend toward “spiritual homelessness” and foster the social habits necessary for communities to cohere and flourish.
Despite today’s on-demand culture, the U.S. Postal Service does not deliver regular mail on Sundays, most organized youth sports avoid Sunday competitions, and most banks are closed on Sundays. The ever-popular Chick-Fil-A chain closes its restaurants on Sundays for the benefit of its workers and their families. Where new, planned communities or transitioning communities form, they should consider adding rest days as part of their master plans for balanced and thriving community life.

Sunday shopping ban doesn’t apply at American Dream mall, N.J. says in Bergen blue laws battle

By Allison Pries | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
The American Dream Meadowlands is getting support from its landlord, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, in a legal dispute with Paramus over Bergen County’s longtime Sunday shopping ban.
The Borough of Paramus filed a lawsuit in August saying American Dream has flouted the ban, commonly known as “Blue Laws” since at least January 19 2025 by allowing its more than 120 retail tenants to operate on Sundays.
Bergen is the last county in New Jersey to maintain its historic ban on Sunday shopping — a policy that remains popular in the retail mecca. The laws prohibit the sale of clothing and apparel, building materials, furniture and appliances on Sundays.
The operators of the American Dream mall began advertising Sunday shopping earlier this year — sparking a legal fight with the borough of Paramus.
Among the defendants in the lawsuit is the NJSEA, an independent authority established by the state in 1971 to oversee the Meadowlands Sports Complex including MetLife Stadium, the Meadowlands Racetrack and now American Dream.
