School Blockades Continue Across France as Protesters Are Called to the Bastille

Thursday October 15th, 2026

The Epoch Times, by Etienne Fauchaire: Blockades at high schools and universities continued across France on Oct. 7, a day before students and teachers were expected to return to the streets for another nationwide protest.

The Student Union called on high school and university students to resume blockades on the morning of Oct. 8 before “converging on Bastille” in Paris at 3 p.m., a call seen as a reference to the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, during the French Revolution.

Several education unions, including SNES-FSU, France’s largest secondary school teachers’ union, also called for strikes and demonstrations in support of the students.

The number of disrupted high schools fell significantly on Oct. 7. Classes were fully or partially suspended at 459 schools, compared with 891 the previous day, according to the Education Ministry, which described the movement as being in sharp decline.

The Oct. 8 demonstrations will mark the fourth nationwide day of action in a protest movement led largely by far-left student organizations and initially fueled by grievances over school conditions.

Faith Leaders React to Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission Targeting Separation of Church and State

WTTW, by Blake Thor: A report from the Presidential Religious Liberty Commission calls for a clawback of the separation of church and state, a fundamental American legal principle for more than two centuries.

Speaking at the White House Friday, Texas Lt. Gov. and Commission Chair Dan Patrick said the separation of church and state is not in the U.S. Constitution.

“The separation of church and state is not in the Constitution,” Patrick said. “And from this day forward, if anyone says that to you and they’re in public office or serve in any agency, in any official capacity, they have to point out exactly where you have violated the Constitution, because you have not. And from this day forward, that phrase should have no power over people of all faiths ever again in America.”

President Donald Trump created the commission via executive order last May. Composed almost entirely of White Christians, the commission made a series of policy recommendations based on the underlying assertion that religious Americans have suffered discrimination for expressing their beliefs in public settings.

Recommendations include creating a Presidential Medal of Religious Liberty, establishing a hotline for individuals experiencing religious discrimination and confirming “federal judges with the courage to decide religious liberty cases on the merits.”

Fact-check: Has the US had more foodborne illnesses and recalls than previous years?

WRAL News, by Madison Czopek: The eggs are contaminated with salmonella. Frozen berries have been linked to an E. coli outbreak. Iceberg lettuce and who knows what else might give you explosive diarrhea. Some people have endured the barrage of frightening food news with dark humor.

“So the bread has glass in it, the lettuce has diarrhea bacteria, the eggs have salmonella,” wrote one Facebook user, poking at recalls of Pillsbury bread rolls for possible glass contamination and iceberg lettuce for cyclospora contamination. “At this point, grocery shopping is just an overpriced episode of Fear Factor.”

The jokes can be funny, but the unanswered question behind them is not: Is our food becoming less safe?

The U.S. food supply is “among the safest in the world,” said Steven Mandernach, the Association of Food and Drug Officials’ executive director. “It’s always been among the safest in the world. I see nothing that has changed.”

But it’s notoriously difficult to answer in real-time whether our food is getting less safe, food safety experts said. Most expect the Trump administration’s cuts to federal, state and local public health entities to weaken the nation’s food safety guardrails in the long run. Whether that is playing out in the short term is less clear.

Here’s what else we learned from food safety experts, and diving into the data.

The cyclosporiasis situation doesn’t prove food safety is rapidly declining.

Yes, record-breaking numbers of domestically obtained cyclosporiasis cases recorded in 45 states have heightened food safety concerns.

Iran security chief threatens neighbors against economic measures, and other Mideast developments

Tuesday August 25th, 2026

AP News, by Angela Charlton: The new leader of Iran’s top security body is threatening neighbors against joining new U.S. efforts to squeeze Tehran’s economy. Egypt is trying to revive Iran-U.S. negotiations. And Iraq and Iran say Tehran has helped some ships carrying Iraqi oil to transit the Strait of Hormuz. France and Saudi Arabia are expected to discuss plans to bypass the waterway.

Meanwhile, Israel has carried out strikes in Syria and in Gaza.

Here’s a look at the latest developments in the Iran war and the wider Middle East on Saturday. Full coverage can be found here.

Iran’s new top security adviser issues threats

The hard-line new leader of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council threatened Tehran’s neighbors against joining the new U.S. effort to hurt Iran’s economy, and accused the United States of increasing global nuclear insecurity with months of war.

“If (Trump) wants to do something, we will retaliate in a seismic manner,” he said in an interview with the state broadcaster that aired Saturday.

Mohsen Rezaei was named this month as part of senior appointments widely seen as hardening Tehran’s political and military stance. His interview with IRIB is his most extensive public statement since then.

Rezaei said Iran would target oil-shipping routes out of the Persian Gulf — alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz — if neighbors join what he described as the economic war against Iran. Those neighbors would be considered enemies and “we will target their interests,” he said.

U.S. President Donald Trump in the past week has vowed to increase Iran’s pain by imposing an “unprecedented” level of economic warfare and isolation. Iran has lived under sanctions for years.

Donald Trump: Imposing the World’s Last Superpower

By Pastor Hal Mayer

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Keep the Faith Ministry once again. Today, we’re going to look at the rise of the second beast of Revelation 13, which, as you know represents the United States. There is no other power in the world capable of doing what America can do. There is no other power that can shake the nations and make them worry about things that the old-world order kept out of the conversation. There is no other power that will force its will on the rest of the world. So, let’s begin with prayer.

Our Father in heaven, we sense that Revelation 13 is being fulfilled right before our eyes. Please join us today as we study this important chapter in the Bible and help us understand the effect of American geopolitical reach on your people, and the outcome. Please help us to understand how this prophecy gives us certainty of the future. So, lead us today as we study, in Jesus name, amen.

Turn with me in your Bibles to Revelation 13:11-17.

“And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”

The second beast of Revelation 13 exercises all the power of the first beast. This means that America is going to rise to greater power than ever before. And she will do incredible geopolitical things that have not been seen in history before. In the dark ages, Rome controlled the world, and she persecuted and slaughtered those who did not agree with her narrative. Many Sabbatarians and others were slain as martyrs. But Rome eventually was throttled by Napoleon’s general and sustained a deadly wound. One of the reasons was that God was going to shift geopolitical power to a land that was then unknown or nearly unknown. Some people wanted to be free of persecution and worship restrictions in England and wanted to worship God according to their consciences, so they came to the shores of America. Miraculously, the American colonies survived and formed the nation and built a powerhouse that cannot be stopped, unless God intervenes. Let’s read from Great Controversy, page 292.

WCC leadership meets Pope Leo XIV

Wednesday March 18th, 2026

World Council of Churches: Bedford-Strohm said the meeting clearly strengthened his hope for increasing unity amongst the churches. “We wholeheartedly agreed upon the necessity to put Christ in the center to move us to visible unity,” he said. “We also agreed that a strong prophetic voice against the unscrupulous instrumentalisation of Christian faith for political purposes is needed.”

Bedford-Strohm added: “Whether it is about aggressive invasion, chasing migrants, or putting down whole groups of people, the churches must lift up the voice of the preacher of the sermon on the mount who encouraged us to practice, love, even of the enemy and advocacy for the most vulnerable in society. It was encouraging that we are united in giving this witness of love and empathy to the world in a time where division and violence seem to triumph.”

Pillay expressed gratitude for “a heart-to-heart talk with Pope Leo on very important global issues. Our conversation evolved around the need for visible Christian unity especially in this time of numerous global challenges.”

The WCC delegation outlined the WCC’s work in the area of Christian unity and discussed the importance of working with fellow Christians in giving visible expression to the prayer of Jesus that all may be one.

“We commended the Pope for his commitment to Christian unity and the collaboration and spirit in which the Vatican and WCC have been working together for many decades and reflected on what more we can do together, especially after the celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the first Ecumenical Council last year,” said Pillay. “We mentioned the numerous places in which the WCC is currently engaged in peace initiatives.”

The WCC delegation and Pope Leo also reflected deeply on the wars, conflicts, and violence that continue to pervade our world.

What did Pope Francis say in Singapore about religions as paths to God?

Tuesday September 24th, 2024

The Catholic World Report, by Christopher R. Altieri: There’s a meme—or a class of them—been making the rounds on the innerwebz a good while now, riffing on a prompt: “You know you’re too [X] when …” etc. Someone needs to do one for last week’s Catholic Internet Kerfuffle over Pope Francis’s remarks to young people in Singapore.

Crikey, what did he say that was so awful?

Well, that is a reasonable question, it turns out.

It is two reasonable questions, as a matter of fact.

“What did he really say?” is one, and that wasn’t immediately clear to anyone who didn’t hear him say what he said and understand it.

“Was it really so awful?” is another, but the two got jumbled together and generated a whole lot of heat, including several accusations of heresy and even apostasy from people who ought to know better.

The crux of the matter, ahem, is the question of whether there is more than one path that actually leads to God. The answer to that is—or may be—a simple “No.” Still, the issue behind the question is the relationship of Christianity to other religions, and that’s … complicated.

Basically, Christianity is true: All salvation is through Christ, alone, and the Church that Christ founded teaches everything necessary for salvation; other religions attain at best a partial and distorted understanding of God and the universe.

What Francis said was: Tutte le religioni sono un cammino per arrivare a Dio. “All religions are path[way]s to reach God.” Msgr. Christopher Washington of the Secretariat of State’s English Section did an admirable job rendering the off-the-cuff remark in the moment, offering: “Every religion is a way to arrive at God.”

Notate bene: He did not say they all get a fellow where he’s meant to go, not on their own. His use of an extended comparison likening religions to “languages” or “idioms” may have suggested something like the idea that it is a matter of indifference which path one takes or happens to be taking just now. Accounting for that as a misimpression is fairly straightforward, even if Francis will bear all the responsibility and some of the blame for it.
