“Make America Great Again,” Donald Trump’s oft-repeated campaign slogan that still can be seen with emblazoned white words on t-shirts, hats, bumper stickers and signs that reflect the sentiments of many Americans. For different people, that vague four-word phrase has taken on different meanings; however, all who have repeated and believe in this concept believe America to have lost something that formerly made it great. For some, this idea reflects a longing to return to the “glory” of the Reagan era, while others are nostalgic to return to the Jim Crow era, while others still, which make up a large percentage, it means making America “moral,” devout, even dogmatic, wherein the church dictates to the state to enforce its decrees, a time period in which Sunday laws were in effect. Individuals longing for restoration of morality and peace in America recoil in horror at the prevailing depravity, the existent vileness and increasing crime, citing them as reasons for churches to become active in politics, thus removing the separation of church and state. President Donald Trump is just the man to remove that separation just as he promised during his campaign; and he is swiftly moving toward it. Politicians from countries around the world are taking note of this, and are also desirous for their respective nations to return to what they consider their former greatness, which involves a return of “Christian” values to government. Hungary and Poland are such countries; in fact, the entire European Union is calling for a return to its “Christian roots.”

A Brietbart headline reads as follows: “Hungary: Governments should be dedicated to ‘Christian Values’ that made Europe Great.”1 In other words, Hungary wants to return to the “greatness” that Europe formerly possessed because of its union of church and state. This was during the time that Roman Catholicism was in the ascendancy and not only ruled the church but also the state. Let us not infer, but allow the Hungarian Prime Minister to speak. “Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that after decades of being under the control of ‘anti-Christian, internationalist powers’ the country needs a government ‘based on the teachings of Christ’ which ‘made Europe and the Hungarians great.’ Speaking at a celebratory event marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the conservative Fidesz party leader said that it was a duty of his government to protect ‘the ways of life that have their roots in Christianity’, including human dignity, the family, the nation, and faith communities, adding that Christian Europe needs a spiritual and intellectual renewal.”2 Make no mistake about it, Europe will have a spiritual renewal, a return to its “Christian,” Roman Catholic roots, following in America’s footsteps; but it will be anything but great. It will involve the restriction of civil and religious liberty and the enactment of Papal decrees, specifically, a Sunday Law. “The decree enforcing the worship of this day [Sunday] is to go forth to all the world. As America, the land of religious liberty, shall unite with the papacy in forcing the conscience and compelling men to honor the false sabbath, the people of every country on the globe will be led to follow her example.”3

In the Brietbart article, Poland is mentioned among the European nations calling for the restoration of religion into politics; and it is mentioned in conjunction with a Roman Catholic Feast, so we know exactly whose “Christian” values these politicians are desiring to implement in their governments. “Last month, fellow former Soviet satellite state Poland celebrated another important date in Christian history, with the Catholic Feast of the Holy Rosary that marked the anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto where ‘the Christian fleet overcame the Muslim armada, saving Europe from Islamisation.’”4

Just a few days ago (December 14), Poland’s Prime Minister essentially repeated the words of Hungarian Prime Minister as the headline conveys, “New Polish PM sees return to Christian roots as only way to stop Europe’s decline.” In the article can be read the following: “Mateusz Morawiecki, the new Prime Minister of Poland, spoke about re-Christianizing Europe during the first interview after his nomination… Speaking about Polish mining and the problematic EU climate policy, he said, ‘we want to transform Europe.’ He digressed that his dream is to ‘re-Christianize Europe.’ Morawiecki specified that, ‘unfortunately, in many places, not only are Christmas Carols not sung, but churches are empty, and some are even turned into museums.’ Morawiecki welcomed the interviewer, Redemptorist Brother Piotr Dettlaff, with the greeting “Szczęść Boże...” It is still used today when addressing priests and members of religious orders.”5

However, it is not only the political leaders of Hungary and Poland that are calling for a return to “Christian” roots in Europe, a re-union of church and state, but also religious leaders across Europe. In fact, they are the ones inspiring the political leaders. Note the following news headlines: “Europe will be 'adrift' if it loses Christian roots, faith leaders warn;”6 Pope Francis sees hope for European Union, urges leaders to return to roots;”7 “Pope Francis reminds EU heads of their Christian roots;”8 and “Pope Francis Reminds Emmanuel Macron of France’s ‘Christian Tradition.’”9

Just as Hungary, Poland and the European Union is following America’s lead in making their countries “great again,” it should be understood what it was that did make America Great at its establishment, the principles of Republicanism and Protestantism. “Republicanism and Protestantism became the fundamental principles of the nation. These principles are the secret of its power and prosperity. The oppressed and downtrodden throughout Christendom have turned to this land with interest and hope. Millions have sought its shores, and the United States has risen to a place among the most powerful nations of the earth.”10 Once these principles are completely done away, neither America nor any other country that rejects these principles will be great; and national apostasy will be followed by national ruin.

“Our father which art in the Vatican...” Rewording of “The Lord’s Prayer” would make it “The Pope’s Prayer."

By now, most individuals are aware of Pope Francis’ recommendation that the wording of a particular phrase in the “Lord’s Prayer” be changed. Major news media outlets have reported on the matter and it has been widely circulated to the delight of some and the displeasure of others. Fox News reported thus: “Pope Francis has suggested he wants to make a change to The Lord's Prayer, widely known among the faithful as the ‘Our Father.’ Specifically, the Catholic leader said in an interview Wednesday he would prefer to adjust the phrase ‘lead us not into temptation,’ saying that it too strongly suggested that God leads people to sin. ‘That is not a good translation,’ the pope said, according to Reuters. The phrase ‘do not let us fall into temptation,’ which the Catholic Church in France has previously decided to use, would be a more appropriate alternative, Francis said. He added that the phrase used by the French, or similar wording, should then be implemented around the globe.”1

For individuals even remotely familiar with the history of Roman Catholicism, this is not at all uncharacteristic for the head of the church to make such a recommendation. Additionally, those who have the discernment to see through the deceptive guise that Pope Francis presents, this proposed change is not surprising as he has made plenty of other statements that discredit and cast contempt upon God’s Word, while assuming supreme authority over God’s words. Proposing changes to God’s words and His laws is nothing new for Roman Catholicism; in fact this identifying mark of Popery is delineated in scripture. “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time” Daniel 7:25.

The Roman Catholic Church asserts that it has been given the authority to transfer the solemnity of the Seventh-day Sabbath to the first day of the week. In fact, this act is what the Roman Catholic Church boasts is its mark of authority. Popery was very successful in deceiving the world into believing that Sunday is the day to be honored as the Sabbath; and if she has her way, she desires to, as the above report from Fox News states, implement the new wording of ‘The Lord’s Prayer” around the globe. Daniel 7:25 not only gives one characteristic of Roman Catholicism, but multiple: the speaking of blasphemy, the wearing out or persecution of the saints of the Most High and the thinking to change times and laws. We understand that during the 1260 years of Papal supremacy (or the time and times and the dividing of time) this scripture was fulfilled to the very letter. However, it is being repeated and will culminate when Roman Catholicism reemerges to supremacy and the Mark of the Beast is enacted. Therefore, it is during the time in which the Pope and other papal leaders are blaspheming God, and attempting to change His words, that the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus, will be persecuted.

The different parties of professed Advent believers have each a little truth, but God has given all these truths to His children who are being prepared for the day of God. He has also given them truths that none of these parties know, neither will they understand…I was shown the necessity of those who believe that we are having the last message of mercy, being separate from those who are daily imbibing new errors. I saw that neither young nor old should attend their meetings; for it is wrong to thus encourage them while they teach error that is a deadly poison to the soul and teach for doctrines the commandments of men. The influence of such gatherings is not good. Pope Francis: ISIS’ Terrorists No Different Than Jesus and His Disciples. Implications For SDAs?

“And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer” Revelation 6:1 and 2. The opening of the first seal brings to view the apostolic days when Christ’s apostles went forth spreading the gospel to every creature under heaven (see Colossians 1:23) and also typifies the final triumph of God’s people carrying the gospel message to the world as a witness. This commission to go forward conquering and to conquer through the spreading of the gospel was not only given to the apostles directly following Christ’s ascension, but is to be carried forward to the close of this earth’s history by God’s chosen and faithful messengers, those who keep the Commandments of God and have the Testimony of Jesus Christ. See Revelation 12:17 and Revelation 14:6-12.

The institution that Satan is primarily working through in these last days to entrap the people in darkness and prevent the spreading of the everlasting gospel is the Papacy, the Roman Catholic hierarchy. This system has a problem with anyone or any group save its own, carrying forward the gospel commission, conquering and to conquer; and Pope Francis has made that abundantly clear in an interview conducted by a French Catholic newspaper published May 17, 2016. Comparing Jesus’ commission to His followers to spread the gospel, which he terms conquest, to Islamic wars of conquest or Jihads (holy wars initiated by Muslims to maintain their religion), Pope Francis is sending the message that evangelizing with any other message than that which coincides with the Papacy’s, must be feared and met with war, just as one fears Jihadists and the activities of ISIS.

“In an interview published Tuesday with France’s La Croix, Pope Francis argued that Jesus’ call to spread the Gospel differs little from the jihad waged by radical Islamic terrorists. The pope explained how ISIS’ ‘war of conquest’ has bred a non-justified fear of Islam among Western countries. ‘I don’t think that there is a fear of Islam as such but of ISIS and its war of conquest, which is partly drawn from Islam,’ he told La Croix. ‘It is true that the idea of conquest is inherent in the soul of Islam.’ ‘However, it is also possible to interpret the objective in Matthew’s Gospel, where Jesus sends his disciples to all nations, in terms of the same idea of conquest.’”1

By differentiating between Islam and ISIS and also by drawing the comparison between Jesus sending forth his disciples, and ISIS extremists, Pope Francis is insinuating his disdain for the spreading of the everlasting gospel of Revelation 14:6-12, just as he has left no ambiguity as to his position concerning ISIS activities, calling their violence genocide and supporting the use of force against them. Pope Francis is clearly the hypocrite of hypocrites as his mission since the onset of his pontificate has been evangelization, and the primary reason that he has appointed the Extraordinary Year of Jubilee, which opened on December 8, 2015. This date was not randomly selected it was strategically chosen by Pope Francis because of its ecumenical significance. Out of his own mouth: “I have chosen the date of 8 December because of its rich meaning in the recent history of the Church. In fact, I will open the Holy Door on the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. The Church feels a great need to keep this event alive…The walls which for too long had made the Church a kind of fortress were torn down and the time had come to proclaim the Gospel in a new way. It was a new phase of the same evangelization that had existed from the beginning.2

While Pope Francis is aggressively evangelizing, he is prohibiting others from doing the same, as his goal is to unite every denomination, nation, and religion as one under his headship. On church unity, “Pope Francis said on Sunday that the way ahead is for various denominations to reject ‘proselytism and competition’ among themselves. The trick, he said, is for Christians to stop being ‘self-enclosed’ and “exclusive…Although Francis has repeatedly called on Christians to invite others to the faith, he has also condemned ‘proselytism’ on multiple occasions, by which he means coercive or aggressive missionary techniques…Christian unity, Francis said, won’t be achieved by subtle theoretical discussions in which each party tries to convince the other of the soundness of their opinions.”3

He has also declared that Christians must stop evangelizing Jews in December of 2015,4 which is not difficult to discern considering his assertion that Jews are saved even without accepting Christ.5 What blasphemy! Not surprising coming from the Roman Catholic Church however, taking into account that they do not believe in Christ as the only way to salvation. Additionally, Pope Francis has declared his “Year of Mercy” as a time to learn about Islam and even calling Christians and Muslims brothers. In other words, people should leave the work of evangelism to the Roman Catholic Church, unite with her, and they will be welcomed as brothers, or more accurately, daughters; otherwise, they will be viewed as threats to the “common good” and individuals who believe that they alone possess the absolute truth.

What can all of this mean for faithful Seventh-day Adventists who have committed their very lives to the service of Christ in conducting evangelism, calling people out of darkness into Christ’s marvelous light, who also refuse to unite with ecumenical bodies that tend to the surrendering of peculiar, distinctive doctrines and beliefs? While ISIS is waging war with literal sword, and has incited the nations with fear and has thus caused the nations to draw their swords to contest them, God’s faithful people, represented by the rider atop the white horse conquering, are wielding the spiritual sword, the undiluted Word of God, the sword of the Spirit, and will be looked upon with fear. The implication is that God’s messengers will be labeled and treated as fundamentalists who are divisive and despise unity, especially as they lay open the sins of Babylon and her daughters and bear an even more pointed testimony than that of John the Baptist. They will be viewed with suspicion and fear and have their rights infringed upon and finally revoked. Yet the people of God should not allow any danger or threat of such to dissuade them from living out their convictions and sharing the gospel with whomever they come in contact. They do not have to pick up literal swords as did Peter the night of Jesus’ capture, they must stand still and allow the Captain of the Lord’s Host, Jesus Christ, fight for them and indeed they will be more than conquerors! “And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer” Revelation 6:1 and 2.
