I do not promote the SkyWatchTV ads, or agree with the opinions expressed by the panel. But, I do concur with Chris Pinto's disclosure of facts about the Jesuit Order.

Jesuit Influence From Hollywood To Higher Education

SkyWatchTV

Sep 20, 2026

For centuries, the Jesuits have been associated with religion, education, politics, and some of the most powerful institutions in the world. But how far does that influence extend today?

In the third installment of this explosive SkyWatchTV series, Joe Horn sits down once again with award-winning filmmaker Chris Pinto, creator of American Jesuits: A History of Jesuitism in the United States.

After tracing Jesuit history and examining its connections to America's past in the first two episodes, this conversation brings the investigation into the modern world.

Healthcare. Politics. Intelligence. Immigration. China. Entertainment. Globalization.

Chris begins connecting historical threads to institutions and influential figures that millions of Americans encounter today—and argues that relationships most people would never think to look for have been hiding in plain sight.

But how much of this is documented history? How much is influence? And how far does the network actually reach?

Steven Hill's Mission Impossible

 Mission: Impossible

Hill was the original leader of the Impossible Missions Force, Dan Briggs, in the series Mission: Impossible beginning in 1966. The phrase "Good morning, Mr. Briggs..." was a fixture early in each episode, where a sound or film recording he retrieved detailed the task he must accomplish. However, he was replaced in the show in 1967 after the end of the first season. As one of the few Orthodox Jewish actors working in Hollywood, he made it clear in advance of production that he was not able to work on the Sabbath (i.e., sundown Friday to dusk Saturday), and that he would leave the set every Friday before sundown.[7] However, despite Hill's advance warnings, the show's producers were unprepared for his rigid adherence to the Sabbath, and on at least one occasion, Hill left the set while an episode was still in the midst of filming. The producers used a number of ways of reducing the role of Hill's character, Dan Briggs, whereby he would only obtain and hand out the mission details at the start of certain episodes, being unable to take further part in the mission as he was known to people they would encounter (used at least three times), or Briggs would need to don a disguise and another actor would then play his role incognito until the conclusion of the mission (and episode) when Briggs would peel off a face mask. On other occasions, Briggs was waiting to pick up the team at the end. Usually, Martin Landau's character (Rollin Hand) took over as the team leader for missions in Briggs' absence, Landau being initially a "special guest star" for the first season, not even included in the show's original opening credits.[7]

According to Desilu executive Herb Solow, William Shatner once burst into his office, claiming "Steve asked me how many Jews worked on Star Trek. He was recruiting a minyon, a prayer group of 10 men, to worship together on top of the studio's highest building and only had six Jews so far from Mission. He asked if I would come and bring Nimoy and Justman and you."[20]

Hill was briefly suspended from the show near the end of the season, during the production of episode 23, titled "Action!" In it, for the only time, Barbara Bain's character Cinnamon Carter obtained the mission details through the taped instructions, even though Landau's character, Rollin Hand, then actually led the team. The suspension was imposed after he refused to climb the rafters via a sound stage staircase, as was called for in the script.[21] This incident was ostensibly unrelated to any religious observances of Hill's. Consequently, Hill was written out of that episode and when he returned to Mission: Impossible for the five remaining episodes of the season, his role was severely reduced. Hill was not asked to return for season two, and was replaced as the show's star by Peter Graves.[22]

The rise and fall of Catholic wins at the Oscars

February 21, 2025

Meg Tilly in “Agnes of God” (IMDB)

John Dougherty

At this year’s Academy Awards, Edward Berger’s twisty Vatican drama “Conclave” has eight nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Barry Fitzgerald, who played Father Fitzgibbon. (He was also nominated for Best Actor; the only time an actor has been nominated twice for playing the same character in the same film.)

That same year, Ingrid Bergman was nominated for playing Sister Mary Benedict in “The Bells of St. Mary’s” and Gregory Peck for playing a priest in “The Keys of the Kingdom” (1944). A few years later, Bergman would marry Italian director Roberto Rossellini (following a brief and scandalous affair), and they had three children—including Isabella Rossellini.

In these films and others of the time, priests were portrayed as “virile, athletic, compassionate, wise,” according to Charles R. Morris in American Catholic. The fact that they were celibate didn’t prevent them from being inspirational figures, played by some of the most famous (and desirable) men in Hollywood. The films portrayed religious life as one of immense sacrifice and meaning. “These are talented, attractive people who have made big sacrifices for the love of God,” Morris writes, “and they are better than the rest of us for it.”

This mid-century popularity of Catholic films in Hollywood occurred thanks to several factors, including the still-exotic nature of Catholicism to majority-non-Catholic audiences and the dynamically cinematic elements of Catholic religious practice. It is also meaningful that this period coincided with the heyday of the Production Code, a censorship document that determined what got made in Hollywood. In American Catholic, Morris (in line with other scholars) suggests that the deluge of positive Catholic films may have been an attempt by the studios to stay in the good graces of the Production Code Administration’s vigilant and pugnacious director: devout Catholic Joseph Ignatius Breen.

‘So He Likes Them Younger’: DeVon Franklin Sparks Controversy After He Confirms New Romance With Woman 17 Years His Junior

Movie executive DeVon Franklin is emerging from the depression that enveloped him following his split from ex-wife Meagan Good. The Seventh-day Adventist faith leader has proudly debuted his new girlfriend.

The public has observed Meagan moving forward with her new boyfriend, Jonathan Majors, while Franklin has candidly shared his emotional struggles post-divorce, notably during his sermons.

In an interview with “The Breakfast Club” in 2023, Franklin opened up about how he cried himself to sleep after the breakup.

“I can sit here before all of you and have this interview and be calm and introspective and all that, but that comes from a process,” he said. “I mean, there are nights you know I’m crying myself to sleep. You know, there are moments when I’ve been angry, but I’ve allowed myself to feel whatever I felt in order to heal.”

It appears that healing has indeed begun. The “Annie” film executive is now stepping out with a renewed sense of joy, as seen in his recent appearances with personal trainer Maria Castillo.

At The Merge Awards, Franklin proudly introduced Castillo to the Baller Alert correspondent, referring to her as his “girl.”

INTRODUCTION

This is a book about the influence of the Roman Catholic institution over Hollywood during its so-called “Golden Age”, then the waning of that influence, and the frequently open hostility towards Roman Catholicism, in the post-“Golden Age” period. The purpose of this book is to provide evidence of the way in which the Roman Catholic institution pursues its never-ending objective of conquering the world, in particular what could be called the “Protestant world”, by seeking to harness and make use of the most powerful entertainment medium the world has ever known: the movie industry.

This is a battlefield which almost no one recognises as such. The Papacy works through politics; through religion; through international finance; and many other channels to achieve its objective. But Hollywood? Moviegoers have no idea, as they sit munching their popcorn and viewing the films they love so much, that they are being deliberately indoctrinated, subtly, slowly, via the very movies they naively think they are watching solely for entertainment. And this indoctrination is virtually as old as Hollywood itself. Their beliefs, morals, worldviews, are all being shifted, changed, altered; and this is being done gradually, film by film, year by year, decade by decade, without them being aware of it. The morality and religious thought of the western world is nothing like it was prior to the advent of the movies. The harm that has been done, and is being done continuously, by the movie industry can never be fully calculated. But it is beyond all doubt that the movies have played one of the greatest roles of all in the destruction of the morals of the West, and the destruction of the Protestantism of the West as well.

Christian author and filmmaker DeVon Franklin announced that he's struck a deal with CBS where he plans to “create new opportunities for people of faith and people of color.”

Franklin, president and CEO of the Franklin Entertainment production company, made the announcement on Instagram on Tuesday.

“Thanks for all the thanks and congrats! I’m beyond excited to expand into TV with CBS Studios!” he wrote. “I’m excited to create new opportunities for people of faith and people of color! I believe entertainment is one of the most powerful mediums in the world and we can use it to help shape hearts and minds for the better. Now when you see the announcement of a deal, it’s the beginning of something, not the end. So now the real works begins, so please keep your prayers going up (I need them!) and I commit to doing my best to bring you the best shows I possibly can!”

Though the CBS deal marks Franklin’s first foray into television, his production company also has a multi-year first-look film deal with Paramount Pictures and a second-look deal with Netflix, according to Deadline.

A World With Many Dangers, Toils, And Snares

A World With Many Dangers, Toils, And Snares

"Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame."

I Corinthians 15:33-34

"Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil."

Ephesians 5:14-16

"He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known."

Proverbs 10:9

"The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one."

Psalm 14:1-3

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will assess the distressing conditions of this age, and recent events which continue to show that we live in a world with many dangers, toils, and snares. The troubles facing the people of earth are pervasive. In Europe many areas have become lands of anger and discontent spurred by the arrival of 1.5 million migrants from the Middle East and Africa since 2015. (1) Research from the Pew Research Center which was published in June 2017 shows that 90 percent of the Greeks who were surveyed disapprove of the European Union's handling of the migrant crisis. The disapproval percentages in other European nations were also high, including 80 percent of respondents in Italy, 78 percent in Sweden, and 67 percent in Spain. (2) Another indicator of discontent in Europe was the election of billionaire Andrej Babis as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic in October 2017. The new leader has said that the Czech Republic should not have to accept refugees, a policy which has apparently resonated with the nation's people. (3) Reports from the media have described the new Prime Minister as a "Czech Donald Trump." (4) Meanwhile, there is trouble in Catalonia as the people of this region have sought to declare independence from Spain in recent weeks. On October 1, 2017, the Catalan people held a referendum in which 90 percent of voters favored independence. The government of Spain declared the vote illegal even as Spanish police forces worked to disrupt the voting process, and in so doing, injured 844 people. (5) Even as Spanish officials have promised to discipline the disobedient citizens of Catalonia, secessionists in the region have urged Catalans to engage in "massive civil disobedience." (6)

There is also great turmoil in the South American country of Venezuela. Due to the socialist government policies of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and his successor President Nicolas Maduro, a full 82 percent of the people in Venezuela now live in poverty. (7) Even as food shortages and violence take their toll, thousands have fled to other countries in an effort to escape their dire circumstances. "Everything there has turned ugly. There's hunger and crime. You can't leave your house after 5 p.m. because you're going to be robbed or killed," said a woman who left Venezuela for the brighter prospects of Peru. (7)

7th-Day Adventist Church--an Ironic Hollywood Landmark

April 22, 1993|AARON BETSKY | SPECIAL TO THE TIMES; Aaron Betsky teaches and writes about architecture

Hollywood was founded by temperance-minded religious pioneers who dreamed of a city of churches, not saloons. Ironically, it became the sin center of Los Angeles, filled with worldly entertainment ranging from raunchy sex to rock 'n' roll.

There are only a few churches left, and those that exist must adapt themselves to a hostile environment. A case in point is the Seventh-day Adventist Church at Hollywood Boulevard and Van Ness Avenue. Its sanctuary is hidden by a formidable bunker of concrete block, while its nave offers itself as a freeway equivalent to the cathedral of Chartres, rising up above the road to mark the place of devotion.

The church is a landmark: It marks the place where the Hollywood Freeway bisects Hollywood and starts its sweeping ascent through the Cahuenga Pass. Depending on your perspective, the Seventh-day Adventist Church is shaped either like a boat of faith riding out onto this river of passing humanity or like a spindle for this movement. Its thin spire rises out of a circle of steel fins that look like the gear for the curved apse that confronts the boulevard and then comes apart into four fins facing north.

The image that comes to mind is that of a car engine, and it would be easy to see this building (as one rather irreverent critic put it) as God's Own Gas Station, but architect Robert Burman claims that the form is just an expression of the triangular site and the tradition of modern places of worship. Burman moved to Los Angeles in 1959 from Seattle to design this church, which opened in 1962. Since then he has graced the Southland with dozens of ecclesiastical structures. His churches are plays of folded white planes that stretch over the interior spaces in overlapping geometries that allow light to seep in between their structural members.

That certainly is the case in the Hollywood Seventh-day Adventist Church. Walk into the nave, and you see nothing but planes held up by high-strength, thin steel tubes. Between the splayed planes, Burman placed glass that is invisible from the main space but lets a sequence of yellow, pink, blue and green light wash around the structure. A rounded apse of folded planes leading to randomly placed panes of glass ends the whole space, while a large chandelier and pulpit mirror the finned steeple outside, giving you the sense that the whole building is revolving into religious mystery around that one, sharp point.

The reality of mundane concerns and the passing of time unfortunately dull the impact of this gesture. On the outside, the main nave is covered with a glittering Venetian glass tile that, with the years and the application of weatherproofing, has turned into a rather undignified pinkish purple. The various offices and classrooms that surround the sanctuary are bland and uninspired, though functional.

The worst part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is its attitude toward the city; from the street level, its great curving gesture remains hidden behind a deep and tall wall of textured concrete block. This helps keep the street noise and violence out but also manages to project a sense of animosity toward Hollywood. Even worse, you enter the building through a giant parking lot at the rear of the structure.

Burman had plans for a more open structure that included courtyards and a friendlier texture to the walls, but budget restrictions and an increase in the needs of the church led to the current bunker configuration. Like many modernist architects, Burman is fascinated with such basic elements of building as structure and light, perhaps at the expense of a concern for how the building fits into the neighborhood. The result is a modern structure, isolated in its purpose and its design. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a great building to drive by, but I am not sure I would want to live near it.

DeVon Franklin Talks New Company; 'Heaven is For Real' Producer Aims to Touch Lives at Box Office

BY CHRISTINE THOMASOS , CHRISTIAN POST REPORTER

August 7, 2014|3:11 pm

(

DeVon Franklin, senior vice president of Columbia Tristar Pictures and author of "Produced by Faith."

DeVon Franklin, a Hollywood executive and Seventh-day Adventist minister, is launching his own production company called Franklin Entertainment and is speaking about how it will contribute to the world of film.

Franklin, the 36-year-old husband of popular Christian actress Meagan Good, is no stranger to the Hollywood scene where he formerly served as senior vice president of production for Columbia Pictures. Now, with his Franklin Entertainment production company, the preacher is working with Sony to change people's lives one film at a time.

"It's about finding great content with mass appeal that still has an uplifting quality about it," Franklin recently told Millennial Magazine. "I want people's hearts to be touched, their lives to be touched, and I want the evidence of that to show up at the box office."

Franklin is no stranger to box office success with films like "Heaven Is for Real," "The Karate Kid" and "The Pursuit of Happyness" under his belt. Doug Belgrad, the president of Columbia Pictures previously spoke about why he believes Franklin's production company will work in both film and television.

"This is a plan tailor-made for DeVon's specific skill set and interests," Belgrad previously told Variety. "It's clear that his ambition was to get closer to the product and maintain his speaking and writing career."

By being focused on the faith-based and urban community markets, he is able to remain unphased by any outside distractions.

"You can't worry about external forces, you have to focus on – this is what I'm here to do, this is what motivates me, this is how I'm called to live," Franklin told Millennial Magazine.

Franklin previously explained how he is able to merge his Christian faith and career.

"The more I started embracing the ministry side, the more it actually added to my career in Hollywood," Franklin told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. "Knowing what challenges people are facing and then working on movies that can address those real-life issues gave me a path in this business."

Best Seat In The House Of Worship: The Temple Hollywood Built

by Susan Stamberg
July 31, 2014 5:07 AM ET

Listen to the Story
Morning Edition
7 min 19 sec

The Wilshire Boulevard Temple (pictured above circa 1939) was dedicated 85 years ago in 1929. Rabbi Steve Leder says, "This was the Los Angeles Jewish community's statement to itself — and to the majoritarian culture that surrounded it — that 'We are here, and we are prepared to be a great cultural and religious and civic force in our community.' " Courtesy Los Angeles Public Library

There's an 85-year-old building on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles that has been a venue for the Dalai Lama, the LA Philharmonic and even scenes in Entourage and The West Wing. But extracurricular activities aside, the Wilshire Boulevard Temple is a house of worship. Recently refurbished, and given a preservation award by the Los Angeles Conservancy, the temple has a special place in the history of Hollywood.

At the top of the temple's dome are the words of the Hebrew prayer Shema: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one." Tom Bonner/

Rabbi Steve Leder is much too discreet to share the names of his movie-biz congregants, but he will say that some big-time Hollywood studio heads, producers, directors, writers and agents have attended the temple over the years. Some of the congregants who helped build — which was dedicated in 1929 — were pillars of the movie industry. Their descendants worship here today.

The restored Moorish-style sanctuary, complete with pillars and stained glass, is massive and magnificent.

"It would be one thing if this was in Paris or Rome or Florence or even Manhattan," Leder says. "But this is Los Angeles. There's nothing like this in Los Angeles."

Modeled after Rome's Pantheon, the Wilshire temple was built by movie moguls — Louis B. Mayer of MGM; Irving Thalberg, MGM's production head; Carl Laemmle, founder of Universal; and the Warner brothers. They all deployed craftsmen from their studios to adorn the temple.

"They brought in their guys," Leder says. And their "guys" put Hollywood touches on what the rabbi calls this Jewish cathedral.

Imposing marble columns aren't marble at all — they're hollow.

"They're plaster painted and waxed to look like marble," Leder explains. "So there's a lot of Hollywood trickery, and it brought together the best of both worlds. It melded the techniques of great religious architecture and the techniques of Hollywood set design."

Just like most movie theaters — but unlike most sanctuaries — the Wilshire Boulevard Temple has no center aisle — after all, that's where the best seats are. Tom Bonner/

Unlike most sanctuaries, Wilshire Boulevard Temple has no center aisle. Why?

"Because these guys built movie theaters," Leder says. "There's never a center aisle in a movie theater either — it's where the best seats are. Why would you put an aisle where the best seats are?"

With the money they made from The Jazz Singer — the first talking picture — the Warner brothers paid for a gleaming mural of Bible scenes, painted by studio artist Hugo Ballin. The synagogue is lavish, with a gilded, coffered ceiling, filigreed brass doors and a soaring dome.

"These were Hollywood Jews," Leder says. "They were theatrical and they were visual. And so they decided, well, that's all well and good that Jews have been shy and timid about this — we are not."

They moved their temple — it was founded in 1862 — and changed its name. B'nai Brith became Wilshire Boulevard Temple. These Jews originally came from Germany and Eastern Europe. They were raised in Orthodox Jewish households. And in building this temple they were saying: We are assimilated Americans. Their larger-than-life rabbi, Edgar Magnin — who served for almost 70 years — was the driving force of the building, and the Jewish community.

"I sort of describe him as the John Wayne of rabbis," says Neal Gabler, author of the 1989 book An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood.

"He felt it was his job to be an ambassador from the Jewish community to the gentile community. Some people called him 'Cardinal Magnin.' "

Magnin was also known as "Rabbi to the stars." Over the decades those stars included the Marx brothers, Jack Benny, Milton Berle, the Three Stooges and Henry Winkler — "The Fonz." Magnin was himself a star in Hollywood. He appeared at all the important events and even took voice lessons to grab the attention of his congregation. He was a showman, creating an aesthetic theater — a movie palace for religion, but a secularized religion.

"In Hollywood, for many, many, many, many years, the studios were open and operating on Saturday," Gabler says. "Even though virtually every studio was run by a Jew, that didn't stop them. There was no day of rest."

Observant or not, the Wilshire Boulevard Temple moguls were culturally Jewish, and sensitive to world events. By the early 1940s, while Nazism enveloped Europe, Harry Warner felt Hollywood should sound the alarm in films.

The Warner Bros. studio provided the colorful murals that recount the history of Judaism as they stretch across the walls inside the Wilshire Boulevard Temple's huge, gold-domed sanctuary. Louis B. Mayer of MGM gave the stained glass windows. Jae C. Hong/AP

"He was the only mogul that wanted to depict what was happening in Germany," says Martin Kaplan, who ran a conference on propaganda in World War II Hollywood, at the University of Southern California's Norman Lear center.

"But the other studios were afraid of losing the German market revenues, which were enormous, and so they didn't want to risk it. And the Roosevelt administration wasn't happy to see Hollywood being anti-Nazi because they were afraid that it would get the American public to press them to enter World War II."

All that ended when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Then the Wilshire Boulevard Temple moguls — and the film industry — filled their silver screens with American patriotism. And they prayed for peace in their glorious house of God. It was a house that Hollywood built — an announcement of arrival and ambition, says Leder:

"This was the Los Angeles Jewish community's statement to itself — and to the majoritarian culture that surrounded it — that 'We are here, and we are prepared to be a great cultural and religious and civic force in our community.' "

Now Wilshire Boulevard Temple is building a family resource center — with free dental and vision care — for its primarily Korean- and Spanish-speaking neighbors. A celebratory groundbreaking party drew temple members from all over LA. They stood in the bright Southern California sun, sipping that beloved old American Jewish drink: sangria.
