THE POPE MEETS SUDAN'S PRESIDENT

Pope Benedict XVI(L) meets Sudan President Omar al-Beshir during a private audience in Castelgandolfo. Beshir said Friday he was ready to call a ceasefire in the Darfur conflict ahead of peace talks with rebels planned for next month.
