WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — Cardinal Robert McElroy indicated that he has no plans to meet President Donald Trump after his installation as the new archbishop of Washington, D.C., next month, yet he recently had a “lengthy” conversation with former President Joe Biden.

McElroy, currently the bishop of San Diego, is set to succeed Cardinal Wilton Gregory as head of the Archdiocese of Washington on March 11.


“I’m going to Washington as the Archbishop of Washington, which is a pastoral role,” McElroy said at a news conference on Thursday. “That is, my role is the leadership of the Catholic community of Washington and all that brings with it.”

A few minutes later, however, McElroy let it drop that he had “had a lengthy call with President Biden the other day” during which the two reportedly spoke about Pope Francis’ current health crisis.

“Some may see the contrast between spurning Trump while chatting casually with Biden as consistent with McElroy’s reputation, seen as a close ally of Pope Francis and one of the nation’s more progressive prelates,” Crux’s John Lavenburg wrote.

“Pope Francis put McElroy in as Cardinal Archbishop of DC to slight Trump and bark at him,” conservative Catholic commentator Taylor Marshall said in January. “So obvious.”

Bishop Joseph Strickland also did not mince words concerning the appointment of yet another heterodox, anti-conservative prelate in the nation’s capital, arguably one of the most important dioceses in the United States and the world.

“The blatant corruption of Pope Francis and the U.S. Cardinals is on full display with the appointment of a McCarrick clone to the same archdiocese where his evil reigned 20 years ago,” Bishop Strickland said. “All of us who love Jesus Christ and His Church must speak out against these wolves of the hierarchy. We cannot remain silent in the face of this blatant corruption.”

 

“Once again I call on my brother bishops to speak up and say NO to this constant undermining of the Truth that is Jesus Christ,” he added. “We all need the voice of St. John the Baptist as we call out the brood of vipers in the Vatican, ‘Repent and believe in the Gospel.’ We must not remain silent as another flock in the Church is burdened with a corrupt hireling for a shepherd.”

Findings from the 2023-24 Religious Landscape Study

How we did this

After many years of steady decline, the share of Americans who identify as Christians shows signs of leveling off – at least temporarily – at slightly above six-in-ten, according to a massive new Pew Research Center survey of 36,908 U.S. adults.

The Religious Landscape Study (RLS) is the largest single survey the Center conducts, aiming to provide authoritative figures on the size of U.S. religious groups because the U.S. census does not collect that information.

We have conducted three of these landscape surveys over the past 17 years, with more than 35,000 randomly sampled respondents each time. That’s enough to paint a statistical portrait of religion not only nationally, but also in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as in 34 large metro areas.

This introductory essay walks through the big-picture trends: evidence both of a long-term decline in American religion and of relative stability in the last few years, since 2020 or so.

The first RLS, fielded in 2007, found that 78% of U.S. adults identified as Christians of one sort or another. That number ticked steadily downward in our smaller surveys each year and was pegged at 71% in the second RLS, conducted in 2014.

The latest RLS, fielded over seven months in 2023-24, finds that 62% of U.S. adults identify as Christians. That is a decline of 9 percentage points since 2014 and a 16-point drop since 2007.

But for the last five years, between 2019 and 2024, the Christian share of the adult population has been relatively stable, hovering between 60% and 64%. The 62% figure in the new Religious Landscape Study is smack in the middle of that recent range.

The largest subgroups of Christians in the United States are Protestants – now 40% of U.S. adults – and Catholics, now 19%. People who identify with all other Christian groups (including the Greek and Russian Orthodox Churches, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jehovah’s Witnesses and many others) total about 3% of U.S. adults.

Both Protestant and Catholic numbers are down significantly since 2007, though the Protestant share of the population has remained fairly level since 2019 and the Catholic share has been stable since 2014, with only small fluctuations in our annual surveys.

Meanwhile, the share of Americans who identify with a religion other than Christianity has been trending upward, though it is still in single digits.

In the days following the 2024 election, some of the most notable figures in American technology began to visit President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Men such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and even Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos visited Trump before he took his office as the 47th President of the United States. What was the purpose of these meetings? Without question, these powerful men were seeking to curry favor with the President in their quest for more power. “Trump’s first administration often regulated companies based on how nice the company was to him personally,” opined Adam Kovacevich, the CEO of a tech coalition known as Chamber of Progress. “I think what you’re seeing is companies wanting to get on Trump’s good side." (1) Trump noted the positive attention he was given when he remarked, “The first term everybody was fighting me. In this term, everybody wants to be my friend. I don't know. My personality changed or something.” (2) Even Bill Gates, the liberal co-founder of Microsoft who now spends much of his time promoting vaccines, met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago and dined with him for three hours. “I felt like he was energized and looking forward to helping to drive innovation. I was frankly impressed with how well he showed a lot of interest in the issues I brought up,” Gates said. (3)

Gates, who supported Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, later expressed surprise at Trump’s newfound support in the tech industry. “I always thought of Silicon Valley as being left of center. The fact that now there is a significant right-of-center group is a surprise to me,” he told the New York Times. (4) This marks a striking shift from Trump’s first term as President. Back then, he was banned from social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter and blocked on the Google-owned video-sharing site YouTube. Now, the chief executives of these same companies are praising him—and in some cases, donating substantial sums of money.

In the days following the election, a slew of tech moguls, including Bezos, Zuckerberg, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman each donated one million dollars to Trump’s inaugural fund. (5) This was a remarkable about-face for Altman, who said in 2016 that Trump was “an unacceptable threat to America.” Altman’s company, OpenAI, is one of the leading forces in the development of artificial intelligence, and its flagship product is the highly popular generative artificial intelligence chatbot known as ChatGPT. In December 2024, Altman gushed over Donald Trump, stating, “President Trump will lead our country into the age of AI, and I am eager to support his efforts to ensure America stays ahead.” (6)

When the big day arrived on January 20, 2025, Trump’s new friends were on hand as he took the oath of office and delivered his inaugural address. Apple CEO Tim Cook was seated alongside the new Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem. (7) Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Sundar Pichai, and the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, were seated together in a row that had a combined net worth of more than 849 billion dollars. (8) With these tech giants positioning themselves as friends and collaborators with the President, we could see technology advance at an unprecedented rate in the years to come —for better or worse.

Frozen funds: why Europe will struggle to fill USAID gap

What’s the context?

It's a multibillion-dollar question: Who will fill the aid gap left by the USAID freeze? The answer is unlikely to be Europe.

The U.S. administration's 90-day foreign aid freeze has left a huge hole in funding worldwide for everything from HIV medicines to mosquito nets, but as calls go out for alternative donors to plug the gap, Europe is ill-placed to step up.

Despite court rulings challenging the funding freeze, the fate of the U.S. Agency for International Development remains in doubt as the administration reviews all projects to see if they align with President Donald Trump's "America First" policy.

With activities from demining, to teaching, to preventing malaria suspended, the question is who can step up to secure the future of those programmes that do not fall under waivers granted by the Trump administration for life-saving projects.

The European Union has been non-committal.

"Everyone in the international community must shoulder their responsibility. The EU cannot fill this gap left by others," a commission spokesperson said.

NGOs say programmes on reproductive health, chronic diseases and psychosocial health are particularly at risk, as everything except emergency aid is paused.

"It's like going back to the 80s and 90s when we were coming with food trucks. That's the risk that we will return to the bad practices of the past," said Jean-Yves Terlinden, humanitarian director at Caritas Europa, a network of Catholic relief, development and social services organisations in Europe.

The U.S. contributed approximately 42% of global humanitarian aid in 2024, with the EU and Germany accounting for around 8% each, according to the United Nations.

On 24 February 2022, Russian troops started invading and bombarding Ukraine.

This invasion caused a wave of displacement in Europe, with millions of persons internally displaced in Ukraine and many others fleeing the country into neighbouring Poland, Romania, Moldova, Slovakia and Hungary.

The humanitarian needs are growing daily. In Ukraine, Caritas has local centres across the country that continue providing support in the form of food and non-food distributions, such as blankets and hygiene items. The needs also include generators, mattresses and medicine.

The war is currently destroying infrastructure, and it is likely that assistance will need to be scaled up in the coming weeks. In western Ukraine, the shops still have their stocks, but that is changing in some cities.

Caritas’ response

In Ukraine, Caritas Europa has two member organisations, Caritas Ukraine and Caritas Spes. Together, they are one of the largest NGO networks in Ukraine with offices providing support to vulnerable children and adults across the country. Despite the war, the staff and volunteers of both organisations continue operating and helping people in need.

From providing shelter in houses and tents to distributing food, water and blankets, Caritas workers do their best to face an unprecedent situation. Only two days after the start of the invasion, Caritas Ukraine launched an “Emergency Appeal”, an emergency relief project, to its sister organisations in Europe that was fully funded within days.

In parallel, the Caritas organisations in Ukraine’s neighbouring countries Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova have prepared to welcome and aid Ukrainians and Ukrainian residents fleeing the fighting.

In President Donald Trump’s second administration, there has been a noticeable bridging between politics and religion and Protestants and Catholics. Donald Trump not only secured the majority of Catholic votes during the 2024 presidential election, but he has also reciprocated their support by appointing numerous devout Roman Catholics in his administration.

Vice President Vance on Friday said that American Catholics focus too much on criticism coming from clergy members, in response to Pope Francis’ public disapproval of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

“As you’ve probably seen publicly, the holy father, Pope Francis, has criticized some of our policies when it comes to immigration,” Vance said, in remarks at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast. “I think that sometimes a lot of conservative Catholics are too preoccupied with their political criticisms of a particular clergy member or the leader of the Catholic church.”

“I think that, what I would say, is that it’s not in the best interest of any of us, again, to treat the religious leaders of our faith as just another social media influencer,” he added,

“That goes in both ways, if I can be so bold, I think it’s incumbent upon our religious leaders to recognize that in the era of social media, people will hang on every single word that they utter, even if that wasn’t their intention.”

The pope, who is recovering from pneumonia, has taken issue with Republicans’ handling of immigration, voicing the church’s view that migrants should be welcomed and treated with dignity. He wrote a letter in February criticizing Trump’s mass deportation plans, arguing they leave people vulnerable and defenseless, calling instead for laws to help the most marginalized.

The pope’s letter at the time appeared to push back on Vance’s recent comments that Americans should care about their family, community and country before others, with the Vatican arguing that “Christian love” extends to all humans.

Vance said he was surprised by the pope’s reaction, but also that he has been praying for his health. He is the second Catholic vice president, following former Vice President Joe Biden, who later became the second Catholic president.

“Every day since I heard of Pope Francis’ illness, I say a prayer for the holy father because well yes, I was certainly surprised when he criticized our immigration policy in that way that he has. I also know that the pope, I believe that the pope, is fundamentally a person who cares about the flock of Christians under his leadership,” the vice president said.

He also noted that U.S. Catholic Bishops have also disagreed with some of the administration’s policies.

“While yes, some of our media and some of our social media influencers, and even some of us fellow Catholics, I think try to bring the holy father into every culture war battle in American politics,” Vance said.

He closed his speech at the breakfast by reading excerpts from a March 2020 homily the pope gave in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Others in the Trump administration have pushed back on the pope’s criticism of the border policies, including Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, who is also Catholic. He said that the pope should focus on fixing the Catholic Church and leave border enforcement policies to the administration.

At least 50 people have died from a mystery illness discovered in three children who ate a dead bat, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Newsweek has contacted the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), via email, for comment.
Why It Matters

Multiple deaths have taken place during this outbreak "which has seen cases rise rapidly within days, and poses a significant public health threat," WHO said.
What To Know

Some 53 people have died and 419 cases have been reported in eastern areas since the outbreak began on January 21, local health officials said in an update.

It started in the village of Boloko, where the first three victims died within 48 hours of eating a bat, according to the Africa office of the WHO.

This outbreak spread to nearby Danda Village, before a second, larger outbreak took place in Bomate Village, where more than 400 people were infected.

Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, nose bleeds and fatigue. There was generally a 48-hour interval between the onset of symptoms and death.

The number of outbreaks caused by diseases jumping from animals to humans, usually occurring in places where wild animals are eaten, has surged by more than 60 percent in the last decade, the WHO said in 2022.

What People Are Saying

WHO said: "Urgent action is needed to accelerate laboratory investigations, improve case management and isolation capacities, and strengthen surveillance and risk communication. The remote location and weak health care infrastructure increase the risk of further spread, requiring immediate high-level intervention to contain the outbreak."

WHO spokesperson Tarik Jašarević told a briefing on Tuesday: "The exact cause remains unknown." He also said: "We are looking into whether it is another infection or whether it is some toxic agent. We have to see what can be done and at what point WHO can support."
What Happens Next

Health officials are still investigating other potential causes for the mass illness, such as Ebola, Marburg, malaria, food poisoning, typhoid or meningitis.

Ebola and Marburg have already been "ruled out," WHO said, after multiple samples were sent to the National Institute for Biomedical Research in Congo's capital, Kinshasa—although some tested positive for malaria.

The "key challenges include the rapid progression of the disease, with nearly half the deaths occurring within 48 hours of symptom onset in one of the affected health zones, and an exceptionally high case fatality rate in another," WHO said.
